You may already have visited the Menier Chocolate Factory during the Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days)
which has been abandoned for a number of years and was the headquarters of Nestlé France between 1996 and 2020
The former Menier chocolate factory in Noisiel (Seine-et-Marne), a 19th-century architectural gem, is about to be given a new lease of life thanks to an ambitious redevelopment project led by Linkcity
This transformation heralds a new era for a site once dominated by chocolate production
the Menier chocolate factory was once the world's largest chocolate factory
pioneering the industry with innovative processes
the historic buildings became unsuited to modern production
leading to a complete shutdown in the 1990s
Having housed Nestlé headquarters until 2020
the chocolate factory will now undergo a metamorphosis to become a space dedicated to indulgence and well-being
The project will preserve the historic facades
At the heart of the project is the creation of a 3500 m² spa, managed by the Italian QC Terme group
renowned for its high-end wellness centers
The spa will be housed in the former confectionery
an emblematic building on the banks of the Marne
But the big innovation will be the roof-top pools
offering panoramic views of the surrounding historic monuments
The Cité du goût is not limited to the spa
A four-star hotel will be built in the "Cathedral"
complemented by a varied range of restaurants and a student residence
Residential accommodation will be divided between listed buildings and new constructions
This vast project also includes leisure and tourist facilities
making the site a true cultural and gastronomic destination
The refurbishment is part of an ambitious ecological approach
with the installation of a geothermal heating network to reduce carbon emissions
This project will not only preserve an exceptional industrial heritage
opening it up to the city and creating a tourist attraction
the developer and his local partners had big ambitions: to create a new residential area with around 1,000 homes
capable of attracting up to 350,000 visitors a year
while generating positive spin-offs for the area and providing for the creation of around 1,000 local jobs
as they announced in a July 2019 press release
the project quickly aroused strong opposition from local residents
and was criticized by the regional environmental authority
the rehabilitation of the former chocolate factory was scaled back
Before the prefecture of Seine-et-Marne decides whether to approve the planning permission submitted by Linkcity, a public inquiry will be held from March 10 to April 11, according to BFMTV
concerned about the lack of transparency surrounding the project
believes that this survey should enable residents to become fully informed
"This would mean increasing the population of Noisiel by 10%
in a district already facing a lack of facilities
He also stresses the absence of a real economic project to accompany this transformation: "To date
only the operator of the spa has been announced
He also expressed concern about the construction of five-storey buildings on the banks of the Marne
and about the impact of the works on thenatural environment
only a few tourists have the opportunity to discover theformer Menier chocolate factory during the four monthly guided tours organized by the Noisiel town heritage department
The developers have undertaken to make the site more accessible to visitors once the work is completed
"Linkcity and the city will do their utmost
Completion of this vast project is scheduled for 2028
In Noisiel, for example, the former Menier chocolate factory could well open a new chapter in its history, where the art of chocolate is replaced by the art of well-being and gastronomy. This is one of the major projects in the Ile-de-France region to watch

During the recent Paris 2019 European Cultural Heritage Summit
a lucky coachload of about fifty Europa Nostra members were able to visit the former Menier chocolate factory at Noisiel
Following precedents set at earlier summit meetings
this industrial heritage visit was organised by Europa Nostra’s Industrial and Engineering Heritage Committee IEHC
Hildebrand de Boer and Paul Smith—were able to accompany the visitors
Designed to promote its products by dazzling its visitors
the Menier chocolate factory is undoubtedly one of France’s most remarkable industrial heritage sites
even featuring on the country’s tentative list for world heritage inscription
Its origins go back to 1825 when Jean-Antoine Brutus Menier
a Paris manufacturer of pharmaceutical products
acquired an old mill in the village of Noisiel on the river Marne
using the mill’s water power to grind his various vegetal and mineral raw materials and reduce them to impalpable powder
Menier began to concentrate on one of the firm’s most successful products
now sold for everyday consumption by grocers as well as chemists
the original factory-site was considerably enlarged under the direction of the architect Jules Saulnier
designed a remarkable new mill building for grinding the cacao seeds and blending the chocolate liquor
This was one of the earliest metal-framed buildings in the world
its framework left visible with spectacularly colourful brick in-fill decorated with cocoa plants and flowers
another remarkable metal framed building was added to house new refrigerating machines
necessary for cooling the chocolate tablets
the factory was further enlarged in 1906 with more remarkable buildings
designed this time by Stephen Sauvestre (architect of Gustave Eiffel’s tower) and making pioneering used of fretted concrete
who commissioned the architectural firm of Bernard Reichen and Philippe Robert to convert the ensemble into their head offices
This reconversion was awarded a Europa Nostra medal in 1998 as an exemplary re-use operation
The visit to Noisiel also comprised the cité ouvrière
is today in desperate need of repair and features on the 2019 list of endangered heritage proposed by the Fondation du Patrimoine and the indefatigable and ineffable Stéphane Bern
the town of Noisiel has enjoyed the Ministry of Culture’s label as a “Ville d’Art et d’Historie”
This prestigious label requires the town to create a dedicated service for the interpretation and promotion of its heritage
along with the highly competent and well-informed guides Miléna Bigaré and Geoffroy Regnauld
Our thanks to them and to Nestlé France for authorizing this exceptional VIP visit for Europa Nostra

For his first institutional exhibition in France, Justin Fitzpatrick furthers his exploration of human consciousness through the prism of biology
The Italian term ballotta refers to a small ball used to illustrate one’s vote in a ballot box
it allows us to visualise the expression of a majority
a similar process is at work : multicellular organisms like our own constantly consult with the various organs that they are composed of.
The Ballotta exhibition studies the links between consciousness and multicellularity
and hypothesises that our thoughts are an assembly which federates the will of each of our body’s cells : rather than being unitary and coherent
it would then be an aggregate of various intentions — sometimes in tension with one another

The second reason is that the event is organised by Narayanin Oupindrin
the Indian origin French citizen and International organiser who represented the Chennai University team for four years between 1983 and 1986
we try to know more about this event in depth
Noisiel is a commune in the Seine-et-Marne department in the Île-de-France region in north-central France
It is located in the eastern suburbs of Paris
The name "Noisiel" is synonymous with the name "Menier"
famous chocolate makers who built the first automated chocolate production facility in 1825
The Menier Chocolate factory operated until 1993 and today is a museum and the French head office of the Nestlé company who now owns the company
The 4th edition of Noisiel Open was one of the strongest chess events in Noisiel till date with as many as 25 titled players taking part in it
A total number of 139 players from 3 different continents and 16 countries participated in the tournament which held in the eastern suburban town of Noisiel
The nine rounds Swiss system event took place from 2nd March till 6th March 2019
Final standings
The Chief Arbiter of the event was IA Thomas Lemoine and he was assisted by Vincent Lestienne and Annie Barakoff. The 5th Noisiel open international will be organised around mid-Feb 2020, the exact dates will be confirmed by end of June 2019. There is no doubt that there will be quite a few Indian players who would like to join the event in 2020. You can also keep track through their official site Noisiel-Echecs
There is also one important reason why the tournament holds special interest for Indian players:

On 15th of January we got the next two GMs - Visakh NR (59th) and D
After roughly one and a half month we now have our 61st GM P
Tamil Nadu. Born on 13th September 2002
Iniyan is just 16 years and 6 months old
He scored his first GM norm at the Montcada Open 2017
second one at the Bobligen Open 2018 and the final one at Barbera Del Valles 2018. After achieving his final GM norm it took him some time to reach the 2500 Elo mark
which he managed to achieve on 5th of March 2019 at the Noisiel Open in France by beating GM Sergey Fedorchuk in round 6
A detailed report with game analysis by India's 61st GM and interview with the man of the moment
Iniyan had already achieved his three GM norms (in fact he went on two score two more GM norms later) and crossed 2500 Elo at Noisiel Open
He beat GM Sergey Fedorchuk in round six to cross 2500 Elo on the live rating list
The youngster scored his first GM norm at the Montcada Open
The second norm came at the 34th Bobligen Open in Germany and the final norm was made Barbera Del Valles
Spain in 2018. On the evening of the day he became a GM
Sagar Shah caught up with Iniyan for an interview:
Sagar Shah (SS): Did you know before your game against Fedorchuk that if you won today
My opponent is a strong player and winning against him would not be easy at all
SS: Who are the people you would like to thank for becoming a GM
earlier coaches Thirumurugan sir and Senthilvel sir
I would also like to thank All India Chess Federation (AICF)
all the teachers and my friends in The Indian Public School
SS: What has been the role of your coach Visweswaran in your journey
PI: Visweswaran sir has been coaching me for the past 6 years
He is one of the biggest reason that I have made it this far
SS: Sponsorship is always an issue for chess players
What would you like to say about their support
PI: Olirum Erodu Foundation has been sponsoring me since December 2015
It is a foundation which concentrates on heath management
water management and many good things for our Erode District. At the same time they would like to create world class sports players from Erode
Because of their support I have managed to play nearly 45 International GM norm tournaments in abroad
SS: How have your parents supported you in this journey
PI: My father is an administrative officer
in Highways department and my mother is a house wife
My sister Iniyakeerthi is studying in 6th grade
My family has supported and encouraged me a lot
Especially in the past one year when I was several times close to the title but couldn't reach it for some or the other reason
Without their support and sacrifice I would have not been able to reach this place
When my mother travels with me for tournaments
Hiding her tears she always wishes me "All the Best"
SS: Now that you are a GM what is your next aim
SS: Which has been your favorite game that you have played till date
PI: There are a lot of games I really like but if I have to choose one it would be my win against French GM Edouard Romain at the Andorra Open 2017
I played very well from moves 20-34 but only his mistake on move no.35 helped me win the game
SS: What is your advice to budding youngsters who would like to make it big in the world of chess
You have to improve the standard of your game
I felt that I am playing better when in the last few tournaments I gave pressure to my opponents even if they are much higher rated than me
what has been the role of ChessBase in your chess career till date
PI: ChessBase is the software I use to practice as I think many do. The new features that come with every version is cool and fun. When I became an IM, ChessBase India wrote an article about me. That boosted my confidence
I think ChessBase India is a great media for chess players
1. From Visa issues to World Youth Bronze
Iniyan faced his first huge test at the World Youth in 2010
Due to miscommunication with the travel agent
he almost missed the interview with the Greece Embassy in Delhi
While the visa of many players were rejected
Iniyan got his visa eight hours before the departure thanks to the efforts taken by All India Chess Federation (AICF)
Iniyan played well and tied for the bronze in the U-8 section
When the Anand-Carlsen match was held in Chennai in 2013 two players from Tamil Nadu made it big
One was 13-year-old Aravindh Chithambaram who won the Grandmaster Open ahead of many GMs
and the other was Iniyan who won the below 2100 category event with a score of 9.0/9
Starting the tournament as the 41st seed and winning the event was a big success
Although Sitges 2016 didn't really end well for Iniyan, the real shock was yet to come. While they were about to leave for the Lorca Open, Iniyan's laptop was stolen! ChessBase India had reported on this incident: "I work with the laptop for 10 hours a day
we can't search for partners to play and thus it becomes our playing partner as well
It had all the data about the players I have countered
Visweswaran's inputs and my entire history from the age of seven
Losing it was a big blow." It was a big blow
Iniyan went on to score his second IM norm with a 2590 performance
Vishy wished him personally as well as on Twitter:
Iniyan! In 1987 we were all wondering if we would have a GM and we closely watched each other in trying to get there first
Now it seems every other month we have a GM !
the popular cricket commentator also chimed in

Stalingrad to Bois de Vincennes (12.4km) Park
There is plenty to explore in this 995-hectare park
but the Château de Vincennes is a must-see and the Lac des Minimes would make a nice end to the journey
Parc de Bercy to Noisiel (25.1km) Park

it can be a little overwhelming on a busy weekday
the Paris Respire car-free scheme has come to the rescue
large parts of the city are closed to vehicles between 9:00am and 5:00pm
Some of the top spots for a worry-free cycle are along the banks of the Seine (where plans are afoot for permanent pedestrianization)
