landmark’s restoration and an update on plans for a new green space Hans Lucas/ReduxByMary Winston NicklinNovember 19 2024The April 2019 conflagration that nearly toppled Notre Dame de Paris elicited a deluge of emotion from people all over the planet the celebrated cathedral—what historian Jacques Hillairet called la maison du peuple (the house of the people)—reopened on December 7 after a Herculean restoration project that united two thousand workers and specialist artisans including a service dedicated to the firefighters and workers who resurrected Notre Dame eagerly awaited by the whole world,” said Olivier Josse “The great joy in reopening corresponds to intense anticipation manifested by a desire to come and rediscover Notre Dame it’s patience—everyone will need to show patience.” Scaffolding and white tarps adorn Notre Dame Cathedral during its restoration after a fire in 2019 The fire destroyed the spire and two-thirds of the roof and damaged its interior and ceiling.Photograph by Tomas van Houtryve Nat Geo Image CollectionThe anticipated visitor numbers are staggering the medieval monument welcomed around 12 million people a year the number of visitors is expected to soar to 15 million “All the studies we’ve conducted indicate that around 40,000 people would like to visit Notre Dame every day,” explained Josse “That’s about twice the daily attendance at Versailles or the Louvre museum.” And Notre Dame is simply not that big and comfortable experience for visitors and worshippers so we’re implementing a whole series of measures for their reception.”  Entrance to Notre Dame has always been free you’ll be able to book online for a dedicated time slot via a booking platform on the cathedral’s official website that will launch in early December you can still access the cathedral without a ticket—but you’ll be waiting in line for an estimated two to three hours cathedral access is limited to individuals and not groups the cathedral will also launch a mobile app with educational information in three languages (to be expanded to six languages in the future) “We will see Notre Dame cathedral as we’ve never seen it before,” said Josse “Never in its 860-year history has it been completely restored Since its initial construction took 170 years between the first stone that was laid and the last the building was already altered and blackened in places … We’ll be able to see the restored building with an exceptional luminosity.” Two professionals work to restore the painted walls of Saint Ferdinand Chapel found inside the Notre Dame Cathedral.Photograph by Tomas van Houtryve Nat Geo Image CollectionThis glorious light—amplified by soaring vaults and stained-glass windows—is fundamental to the Gothic architectural style a 12th-century innovation widely copied across Europe Scrubbed of the grit and grime accumulated over the centuries the cathedral’s Lutetian limestone will glow accented by the original ochre color repainted on the ribbed vaults Everything has been spruced up—from the frescos and checkered floor to the bells removed from the belfry and restored at the Norman foundry where they were first cast A high-tech new lighting system will also contribute to the effect The new visitor circuit will create what Rector Olivier Ribadeau Dumas calls a “coherence,” with an educational dimension Entering the central portal of the Last Judgement with paintings and sculptures first depicting the Old Testament and chronological scenes from the life of Christ leading the visitor from “the darkness of the north to the light of the south,” explained Josse the precious relic formerly sequestered in the Treasury room and now on full display inside an elaborate new reliquary designed by Sylvain Dubuisson and housed in the axial chapel [the circuit] will be a great journey of rediscovery making people understand the meaning of this cathedral,” said Josse “Because a cathedral is a building that is built for the glory of God.”  Notre Dame has showcased the evolution of decorative arts and objets d'art underwent painstaking restorations the ceremonial choir carpet—commissioned by Charles X in the 19th century as the largest carpet ever woven in France—was meticulously restored at the Manufacture des Gobelins the historic tapestry factory that’s now part of the Mobilier National (French national furniture depository) Much like the carpenters and stone masons working on the cathedral itself these artisans perpetuate a centuries-old savoir-faire “What I find particularly moving is the succession of artistic and architectural presences in the cathedral,” said Josse This interplay is exemplified by the immense gold cross by artist Marc Couturier which rises above a pieta surrounded by 18th-century statues of Louis XIII and Louis XIV is medieval architecture from the 12th century.” visitors will admire new creations by contemporary artists The liturgical furniture was conceived by designer Guillaume Bardet “Of the many applications for this [design] competition Bardet was the only one to propose bronze," explained Josse “There’s a nobility and simplicity to the material and it creates a marked contrast with the stone of the cathedral—it doesn’t compete with the beauty of the building.”  the new chairs were crafted in the Bosc workshop in the Landes region The oak material mirrors the “forest” that comprises the cathedral roof and the low backs make the chairs less obtrusive “The Archbishop of Paris always says: They are comfortable because then we enjoy sitting down and meditating,” explained Josse Notre Dame isn’t just a religious icon and cultural symbol, it’s also a nexus for the Parisian tourism industry. Companies like Fat Tire Tours have always fielded a bevy of tourist requests about visiting Notre Dame Skip-the-line guided tours of the cathedral towers “It’s the highlight of our Paris By Night tour,” said guide Fabiandra Andries “We arrive by bike around sunset with the light blazing directly on the façade Then we also see it by boat … I like explaining to my clients that for us history nerds the restoration is basically the Avengers End Game moment in history with 15 disciplines coming together in an international team to work on it.” “For a pioneer in sustainable travel, [large demand] brings with it concerns about overtourism alongside our delight that Notre Dame will once again be open to the public,” said Sara McCarty, vice president of delivery for France. “We’re keen to develop a hybrid offering: a live guided tour of the exterior paired with a scholar-narrated digital audio guide. With the audio guide, visitors will be able to explore the cathedral’s majestic interior at their own pace—and at non-peak hours if desired—while still having an expert in their ear.”  Construction on the cathedral’s exterior will continue. In fact, the city is investing approximately $54 million (50 million euros) in a project to create around 20,000 square feet of green space in a pedestrian-friendly outdoor zone. Speaking at an October news conference at the Hotel de Ville (Paris’s City Hall), Mayor Anne Hidalgo explained the goal to better “showcase the heritage and respond to the challenges caused by climate change.” Belgian landscape designer Bas Smets won the international competition to redesign the cathedral’s surroundings with a plan that included creating a “microclimate” through vegetation and a water feature. With dimensions similar to the interior of the cathedral, the limestone forecourt will be redesigned like a “clearing” in the trees—with 160 additional trees planted to provide shade in the summer.  Above all, the project—which will kick off in autumn 2025, with an expected completion of the first phase in 2027— aims to improve the visitor welcome. Guillaume Normand, vice-rector of the cathedral, equated this with a “better spiritual experience," perhaps enabling a “transformative moment” inside the cathedral. Bazzel, A Long Time Coming Copyright © 2025 Arkansas Money and Politics (WSBT) — We are nearing 24 hours away from the historic kick off to the college football playoffs As Notre Dame and Indiana fans travel to tailgate Friday a lot of Irish fans are already stopping by the Hammes Bookstore on campus The limited-edition merchandise is already flying off the shelves Hammes has already seen a rush of visitors on campus stocking up on cold weather gear and college football playoff merchandise for this historic in-state matchup Being a part of history is what many are looking to accomplish by visiting one of the busiest spots on campus ahead of this huge Hoosier state showdown Wren Martin with Hammes Bookstore said the energy can already be felt ahead of game day and I feel like it can commemorate this really historic time this is the first time we've had this kind of playoff it makes fans feel like they can be a part of history in a really exciting way,” said Martin Many fans are looking to get their hands on limited-edition college football playoff items that are selling quickly after arriving just this week "We got this in here on Tuesday and then it was a quick turnaround to have them in store here on Wednesday kudos the team and shout out to them for getting it in store so all the fans are looking for it get in your wallet it's here,” said Martin Although the shelves are stocked as of right now Martin said these rare Notre Dame finds won't be here long "It's tough to know obviously we are running out of some of our quantities The koozies were huge item that went pretty quickly and we were able to get more of those in It is tough to know with this being an unprecedented game with how quickly this merchandise is going to sell out but we are going through it pretty quickly,” said Martin With Friday’s game being played in below freezing temperatures those at the bookstore said this week has been busier than the normal hustle and bustle seen around game days the unofficial start of Marcus Freeman’s effort to build off a Notre Dame season that will be remembered for its run to the national championship game This week’s mailbag includes updates to injuries wonders if recruiting has a trouble spot and answers a captaincy question with an assist from Jack Kiser We also talk scheduling and set expectations for 2025 After the introductory press conference of general manager Mike Martin last week, Notre Dame made head trainer Rob Hunt available for an injury update on the entire Irish roster going into spring practice Love and Carr are fully cleared for spring practice although the staff won’t push it with Love after that knee injury suffered against USC and aggravated against Georgia that basically reduced his College Football Playoff contributions to the 98-yard run against Indiana and the 2-yard touchdown against Penn State Hunt said there was no thought of surgery on Love’s right knee For a player who could be a Heisman Trophy contender there’s little utility to burning off additional tread on his tire during spring practice Hunt said the quarterback was on a 10-to-12 week return-to-action program after the elbow injury suffered in practice in late September For anyone who watched Carr warm up before the national championship game he’d made a considerable progress in velocity from two months earlier before the USC game the most pertinent injuries are to grad-transfer safety Jalen Stroman who will miss spring with a collarbone repair who will be limited while recovering from a fifth metatarsal injury Left tackle Anthonie Knapp and guard Billy Schrauth will both be limited during spring practice as they recover from ankle injuries Hunt also said several frontline Notre Dame players will basically be on a pitch count during spring practice Notre Dame will still do the traditional 15 spring practices including work after the Blue-Gold Game on April 12 But there’s clearly some consideration to how much football is too much football for parts of the roster coming off the longest season in Notre Dame history We’ve already seen some of those adjustments during winter conditioning when Loren Landow put players in tiers based on how much work they got last season Mid-year enrollees and incoming transfers got to work first Greathouse and Shuler got at least a couple of extra weeks of recovery The Green Bay Packers recently announced they are revoking season tickets from holders who have consistently sold their tickets for every game Can Notre Dame do the same so we can stop the opposing team invasions Notre Dame is trying to grow its season ticket base as opposed to the Green Bay Packers who have a waiting list that is reportedly 150,000 people long It takes decades to get to the front of that list it just takes a phone call to the ticketing office It’s also worth noting that the Packers revoke tickets for fans who sell 100 percent of their tickets over multiple seasons That’s different than just selling a ticket to an Ohio State fan but attending other games As I’ve written about before Notre Dame has tried to make it harder for opposing fans to buy tickets to marquee games and has had some success Notre Dame has to put a product on the field (that includes the schedule) that is worth paying for and worth forgoing a profit opportunity to be there to see the Irish play And that’s complicated even more by a fan base with an average distance from campus of 500 miles I’d consider the “invasion” of Ohio State fans two years ago to actually be a success for Notre Dame To make draconian ticketing rules when the fan base is more engaged with the team than it’s been in a decade — at a time when fans are asked to give more and more to support football — would simply be a bad business practice by Notre Dame’s athletic department Is Notre Dame concerned that future scheduling might get drastically tougher if the SEC-Big Ten form a scheduling alliance and the SEC goes to a nine-game conference schedule? Given Matt Rhule’s recent comments Power 2 teams might be reluctant to schedule Notre Dame if they already have 10 games against Big Ten-SEC opponents which is different than saying it’s a panic Like almost everything in college football it’s hard to predict where scheduling will land but there’s a world where the Big Ten and SEC get so insular with each other that it squeezes out games against ACC or Big 12 opponents and possibly Notre Dame But, it’s also hard to look at the potential annual series with Clemson, as reported by Yahoo! Sports, and wonder if there’s some insurance here in case USC backs out of its rivalry with Notre Dame. My colleague Antonio Morales, who covers USC, recently sat down with Trojans athletic director Jen Cohen and asked about the Notre Dame series “It’s such an important series to our fans and both universities I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: In an ideal world We’re now playing in a conference where we fly back and forth across the country every other week and CFP expansion and how you get access to the CFP and how things are seeded and selected “So we remain in conversations with Notre Dame about the series I think we’re clear to each other (that) we’re going to continue to evaluate what’s best and it’s my job to evaluate what’s best for our student-athletes and our program we’re excited to go back to South Bend next year.” but the answer presents as USC not viewing the Notre Dame series as a must-keep on its future schedules who could have predicted USC would have to fly back and forth across the country by joining the Big Ten?) If the Big Ten keeps its nine-game conference schedule and adds an annual game with an SEC school it’s hard to see how the Notre Dame series survives in its current form Would all this push Notre Dame fully into the ACC The Irish could save the conference and preserve the home offered for its Olympic sports the landscape could look completely different (again) which means letting the chaos play out elsewhere would be the strategic move Notre Dame has future Power 2 games scheduled with Michigan State plus more regular rotations of Miami and Florida State it still feels like Notre Dame will have enough meat on their schedule bone But it would be a shame if USC weren’t a part of that How should we as fans think about appropriately setting and managing our expectations for 2025 everyone wants to see teams that can win multiple playoff games on an annual basis but we know this year’s team will be less experienced and more challenged in various ways (not only personnel but opponents Short of another run to the national championship game what does the 2025 team need to do to show us that Marcus Freeman has built a program that is set up to compete consistently The easiest way to put this is last year’s team was built to make a run through the College Football Playoff This year’s squad feels like it’s built to qualify which felt like the bare minimum to consider last season a success just making the field feels like Freeman would have earned a passing grade Let’s just say Notre Dame goes 10-2 this season and loses an opening-round CFP game at Tennessee That might feel like a step backward from going all the way to the national title game but “compete consistently” starts with making the CFP regularly Notre Dame isn’t going to have a roster constructed for that kind of season every year Notre Dame lost so much experience off last year’s roster Notre Dame’s staff views this season as a bridge year between two teams capable of making a run The Irish still believe they have the material to make the CFP next season but it’s the 2026 campaign that looks like Notre Dame’s chance to make another run let’s say Notre Dame went 5-3 in the CFP from 2024-26 losing in the first round and losing in the semifinals how many other programs could boast five CFP wins in that three-year span Wide receiver and defensive tackle seem to be two areas where Notre Dame has struggled to recruit top end talent Which area do you think is more important for them to start recruiting better to take the next step as a program but Penn State’s lack of a receiving corps probably cost them a chance at a title this season recruiting at that position has been a brutal mixture of poor acquisition and poor evaluation That doesn’t even get to the difficulty in finding top talent in the portal with the lines of scrimmage a hard market to acquire talent a group that includes Greathouse and Rico Flores as hits with Micah Gilbert likely to join that list this season That collection of takes doesn’t include Jordan Faison who enrolled as a walk-on and turned into one of Notre Dame’s best threats almost immediately The Irish have yet to recruit a true starting defensive tackle under Freeman and Al Washington Brenan Vernon and Devan Houstan are entering make-or-break springs and may have a hard time moving up from the third team Armel Mukam and Sean Sevillano were Freeman takes but their stories aren’t that much different than Vernon and Houstan in terms of playing time There’s a reason Notre Dame signed two transfers at defensive tackle this cycle in Jared Dawson and Elijah Hughes But unlike the receiver transfers — Malachi Fields and Pauling — the Irish needed help at defensive tackle simply to field a functional defense Three total starts by defensive tackles signed by Freeman can’t be a trend that continues if Notre Dame wants to be a consistent CFP contender And getting out of this rut will take more than landing one Elijah Golden the top interior defensive lineman on Notre Dame’s board next cycle The Irish have to start signing multiple Goldens And that feels like a big ask based on the last four recruiting cycles Who are your early picks for captains on this team Who do you see filling the leadership vacuum left by the departing players I posed it to Jack Kiser in a one-on-one interview The first name out of the linebacker’s mouth might surprise losses — human and material — wrought by Hurricane Ida, the fifth-most-powerful hurricane to hit the U.S. Just halfway through the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season there have already been 14 named tropical storms including six hurricanes natural disasters like Ida and Nicholas fall from the headlines within days or weeks but recovery can take years with some people faring better than others Meng and her co-authors conducted household surveys with families that had endured Hurricane Sandy in 2012 the researchers found that people who suffered from a longer period of utility disruption are more likely to sustain monetary losses and have more difficulty recovering people often think about rescuing people immediately Some hurricane victims had 10 months of utility services disruption with some going without electricity for 70 days,” Meng said “Quality of life really matters even though we don’t talk about it There will be a cascading effect: If you have no power you don’t have internet and might not be able to work All of this could contribute to losing a job.” People who live in the U.S.’s eastern and southern coastal areas often carry hurricane insurance but they might not have taken all precautions necessary for a full recovery The authors’ research shows that installing window protection and having a personal electric generator are significant to a quicker recovery “More than half the respondents (61 percent) had an insurance policy and 24 percent owned an electric generator only 7 percent of them installed any kind of window protection in preparation for [Hurricane] Sandy,” they wrote Households that installed window protection are more likely to report monetary damage but they are also more likely to recover rapidly from those damages they argued that preparedness activities can be expensive They found that a proportion of the households in the survey had higher risk perceptions but did not engage in preparation activities possibly due to limited financial resources To boost the number of households with both window protection and a personal electric generator the researchers suggest that “policy actions targeted to influence self-protective behavior such as insurance premium discounts or discounts on alternative resources (i.e. offering discounts for purchasing generators in hurricane-prone areas) The authors also suggest identifying the most vulnerable people (e.g. the elderly and those at a socio-economic disadvantage) in order to offer discounts for generators or other incentives Their study found that both economic status and educational achievement make a difference in the outcome for hurricane survivors “The fact that households with higher socio-economic status are associated with a quick recovery shows strong evidence of inequality in disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts It is therefore essential to acknowledge and invest in communities and infrastructure in ways that address these inequalities and promote equitable recovery,” Meng said Disruption of utility services also plays a role in promoting evacuation and motivating planning and preparation activities for future hurricanes Roughly 39 percent of survey respondents reported having an evacuation plan in case a hurricane were to affect their neighborhood having experienced a hurricane in the past makes a significant difference as respondents who endured electricity disruptions had an approximately 11 percentage-point-higher likelihood of having an evacuation plan than those who had never experienced such disruptions While it is certainly critical to know when and where a hurricane will make landfall Meng and her colleagues recommend that emergency agencies give more detailed information in order to paint a recovery scenario for potential hurricane victims people probably hear warnings a lot and might tune them out,” Meng said “Emergency agencies can customize what kind of threats there are — for example announcing that people will be without power for at least 30 days and suggesting they stock up on water and other critical supplies.” Boston University and the George Washington University The team hope their research will help inform changes in policy that could prevent or shorten suffering for those affected by hurricanes Notre Dame News © 2025 University of Notre Dame “Jeremiyah has had a good week of surface would seem to be an unusual event: a special convocation on Dec recognizing the evolving independence of the Philippine Islands the University had long taken an abiding interest in the Philippines due to the predominance of Catholics in that commonwealth put it in his chronicle of the University’s first 100 years: “The fate of these people was followed with deep concern after the Spanish-American War It gave great satisfaction to American Catholics to review the benignant rule that had left the Filipinos their religious liberties and brought them an undreamed of measure of material progress.” So it was that Notre Dame planned a celebration of the passage of U.S legislation that would fully establish an independent Philippines in 10 years The event was scheduled to coincide with the inauguration of the country’s first president but when Roosevelt learned of the celebration he asked that it be delayed until he could attend agreed and asked Roosevelt to also accept an honorary degree the University cited Roosevelt as a “leader and ruler who with faith and invincible courage when other brave men were faltering took the reins of government at a crisis which threatened with collapse and chaos the centuried civilization and institutions of our country and the rest of the world and who is now by achievement even more than by official position the first citizen of our republic.” The president then delivered a 14-minute speech reviewing the U.S role in the Philippines over the previous 40 years He concluded by drawing a comparison between Notre Dame’s values and the intrinsic rights of all people “…There can be no true national life either within a nation itself or between that nation and other nations unless there be the specific acknowledgment of the rights of man,” the president said hold to be the rights of freedom of education and freedom of worship This University from which we send our welcome to the new commonwealth exemplifies the principles of which I speak.” presidents upon whom Notre Dame has conferred an honorary degree The first to receive that distinction and to also serve as the principal commencement speaker was Dwight D whose invitation in the spring of 1960 came—by presidential scheduling standards—at the last minute The story goes that several individuals had declined for various reasons invitations from the University’s president suggested that Father Hesburgh invite the president Father Hesburgh had been appointed by Eisenhower to the National Science Board and to the nascent U.S but the Notre Dame leader was reluctant to invite Eisenhower on such short notice he told his aide that if she would draft a letter interrupted the 45th reunion of his class at the U.S government on the verge of social and political change and one facing the difficult task of striking the right balance “We do not want governmental programs which in the guise of promoting the general welfare destroy in the individual those priceless qualities of self-dependence self-confidence and a readiness to risk his judgment against the trends of the crowd,” Eisenhower said “We do want a government that assures the security and general welfare of the nation and its people in concord with the philosophy of Abraham Lincoln the things which people cannot well do for themselves.” Eisenhower wasn’t the only prominent honoree on the 1960 commencement platform Also receiving an honorary degree was Cardinal Giovanni Montini The nation’s first and still only Catholic president never spoke at Notre Dame during his presidency But he did have a long and close relationship with the University prior to winning the 1960 election and while in office he received Notre Dame’s highest honor Kennedy served as the winter commencement speaker and received an honorary degree on Jan He said: “This is a happy day in my life I am deeply honored in being admitted to the ranks of the men of Notre Dame (this was before the University began admitting women in 1972) I have cheered for old Notre Dame for most of my life and so you can understand my feelings as I come for the first time to this great university dedicated to Our Lady of the Lake.” He went on to reflect on the value of education the rights of the individual over the state and various economic and political problems of the day the future president said: “High on the wall of the House of Representatives in Washington They were from a speech by a distinguished senator from my native state of Massachusetts—Daniel Webster: ‘Let us develop the resources of our land and promote all its great interests and see whether we also in our day and generation may not perform something worthy to be remembered.’” attended a Notre Dame football game against Pittsburgh on Oct Kennedy returned to Notre Dame to accept the University’s 1957 Patriotism Award “I am not sure that my selection by the senior class (for this honor) is evidence of the outstanding judgment and wisdom the University has tried to instill in them in four years.” Clearly taken with the words of Daniel Webster he closed his 1957 address with the same quote he cited in 1950 Kennedy spoke to the Notre Dame Club of Washington speaking at length about his service on a special Senate committee investigation of labor racketeering In addition to his speaking engagements on and off campus JFK was a charter member of the Notre Dame Lay Advisory Council for the College of Liberal and Fine Arts (now the College of Arts and Letters) which was formed in 1954 and met on campus twice yearly Kennedy accepted Notre Dame’s highest honor a little over a year after his election as president The oldest and most prestigious honor given to an American Catholic the Laetare Medal was established in 1883 and is awarded to a Catholic “whose genius has ennobled the arts and sciences illustrated the ideals of the Church and enriched the heritage of humanity.” Father Hesburgh bestowed the award on the president in an Oval Office ceremony Nov two years to the day before his death in Dallas Notre Dame did not host another president until March 17 accepted an honorary degree and delivered a speech against a “new isolationism.” While on campus he also met with a collection of Midwest governors a group of college and university president and select Notre Dame faculty members He added in a news conference for good measure Jimmy Carter received an honorary degree and delivered what many regard as the key foreign policy address of his presidency at the University’s 1977 May commencement The president spoke of a diminishing threat from the Soviet Union a notion dismissed as naive at the time but which proved prophetic he advocated the creation of new global alliances and championed human rights policies built upon the “new reality of a politically awakening world.” Carter appointed Father Hesburgh to head a delegation of Americans to a United Nations conference on science and technology for development and as chair of the Select Committee on Immigration and Refugee Policy Father Hesburgh also joined with first lady Rosalynn Carter on a fact-finding mission to Southeast Asia that led to an effort that averted mass starvation among Cambodian refugees The Carters returned to Notre Dame in 1992 as the inaugural recipients of the Notre Dame Award which recognizes men and women of any faith or nationality whose life and deeds have shown exemplary dedication to the ideals for which the University stands: faith At a memorial tribute to Father Hesburgh after his death Feb the Carters joined with other dignitaries in honoring the man who led Notre Dame from 1952 to 1987 Carter recalled how he made the “mistake” in 1979 of asking Father Hesburgh if there was anything he could do for him Father Hesburgh told Carter he wanted a ride on an SR-71 supersonic reconnaissance jet it’s not customary for civilians to ride on top-secret aircraft,’” Carter said I thought you were commander in chief.’” Carter stood by his word and arranged for the flight and as he recalled at the tribute: “I sent word to a pilot of an SR-71 that he would be having his first civilian passenger who was a special friend of mine I asked him how fast the Blackbird had ever flown I said I would be very pleased if he could go a little faster than that when he took up Father Hesburgh Father Ted went up in an SR-71 Blackbird airplane and he and the pilot went 2,200 mph Security was exceptionally tight in May 1981 when President Ronald Reagan made his first public appearance after the attempt on his life in March Reagan had an indirect association with Notre Dame ever since his portrayal of Fighting Irish football legend George Gipp in the 1940 film “Knute Rockne All-American.” The president was reunited with his costar in the movie Melding his personas as the “Gipper” and president Reagan promised to win one for the “private sector” by shrinking the nation’s government “have made it plain they want an end to excessive government intervention in their lives and in the economy.” Reagan also told the graduates about a need for a strong national defense But he predicted: “The West will not contain communism bizarre chapter in human history whose last pages are even now being written.” Reagan returned to Notre Dame in 1988 to dedicate a 22-cent stamp honoring Rockne the iconic Irish football coach of the 1920s White House officials wanted to make the event all about football someone from the White House snuck a football in the president’s lectern and Reagan grabbed it during his speech and threw a pass to Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown Reagan concluded his remarks at the stamp dedication by saying: “Notre Dame stands among the winds of subjectivity for lasting values and principles that are at the heart of our civilization and upon which all human progress is built If they want to see the goodness and love of life of this generation the commitment to decency and a better future let them come here … to Notre Dame.” Bush delivered an address on family values and service to community at Notre Dame’s 1992 Sesquicentennial Year exercises The American family is “an institution under siege,” Bush said “Today’s crisis will have to be addressed by millions of Americans at the personal individual level for governmental programs to be effective government alone is simply not enough.” The University’s honorary degree citation read in part: “The forty-first occupant of the White House he has faced international and domestic challenge alike with personal integrity and a measured confidence born of faith in the resiliency of the Republic and its people.” Bush visited the Notre Dame campus on five occasions One week before his election to the presidency in 1988 where he addressed more than 2,000 students speaking of the “great divide” between his values and those of Democratic nominee Michael Dukakis Bush spoke at the closing ceremony of the Special Olympics World Games He also attended Notre Dame football games in 1986 and 2001 to serve on two of his key initiatives—the President’s Drug Advisory Council and his Points of Light Foundation delivered his first presidential commencement address at Notre Dame in May 2001 declaring that the nation’s faith-based organizations were central to the war on poverty “There is no great society which is not a caring society,” he said adding: Government should never fund the teaching of faith but it should support the good works of the faithful Bush had visited Notre Dame twice previously for football games as well as in March 1980 to advance the presidential candidacy of his father at a Mock Republican Convention to deliver a speech at the Joyce Center on Social Security Bush and the former first lady Laura Bush joined in a dedication ceremony for O’Neill Hall a music and sacred music building named in honor of Notre Dame alumnus and Trustee Joseph I introduced the Bushes to each other when the couples lived in Lubbock the White House announced that President Barack Obama would serve as the commencement speaker at Notre Dame’s ceremony on May 17 University offices were receiving heated phone calls and email messages from people angry that Notre Dame would recognize a pro-choice president The controversy continued for the next two months Many called for Notre Dame to rescind the invitation several thousand protesters gathered on the South Quad and an alternative graduation ceremony was held at the Grotto for students who chose to boycott the president’s appearance Obama was greeted with a long and loud ovation as he entered the arena with Father Jenkins Father Jenkins reflected for 17 minutes on the invitation to the president and the ensuing firestorm a great deal of attention has surrounded President Obama’s visit to Notre Dame We honor all people of good will who have come to this discussion respectfully and out of deeply held conviction Most of the debate has centered on Notre Dame’s decision to invite and honor the president Less attention has been focused on the president’s decision to accept though he knows well that we are fully supportive of Church teaching on the sanctity of human life and we oppose his policies on abortion and embryonic stem cell research Others might have avoided this venue for that reason But President Obama is not someone who stops talking to those who differ with him President: This is a principle we share.” two or three hecklers attempted to disrupt the ceremony but ultimately were shut down by Notre Dame students who Obama spoke of the controversy surrounding his visit and paid homage to Father Hesburgh whose work as a charter member of the Civil Rights Commission made it possible many years later for Obama to become the nation’s first African-American president Obama also offered a challenge to the graduates “has come of age at a moment of great consequence for our nation and for the world — a rare inflection point in history where the size and scope of the challenges before us require that we remake our world to renew its promise; that we align our deepest values and commitments to the demands of a new age It’s a privilege and a responsibility afforded to few generations — and a task that you’re now called to fulfill your generation is the one that must find a path back to prosperity and decide how we respond to a global economy that left millions behind even before the most recent crisis hit — an economy where greed and short-term thinking were too often rewarded at the expense of fairness “Your generation must decide how to save God’s creation from a changing climate that threatens to destroy it Your generation must seek peace at a time when there are those who will stop at nothing to do us harm and when weapons in the hands of a few can destroy the many And we must find a way to reconcile our ever-shrinking world with its ever-growing diversity — diversity of thought diversity of culture and diversity of belief we must find a way to live together as one human family.” Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton had somewhat limited interaction with Notre Dame In recognition of Father Hesburgh’s work on the Civil Rights Commission Johnson presented the Notre Dame president with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964 Nixon attended a Notre Dame football game just three weeks after he and Eisenhower were elected president and vice president in November 1952 Three years after Kennedy received the Patriot of the Year Award He told the assembled students: “When you go out from this University strike at prejudice wherever it rears its head.” Nixon and Kennedy squared off in groundbreaking debates and a Wednesday he was misquoted in a cbssports.com interview in which the Dayton native who in December left his assistant job at Cincinnati to replace Brian Kelly at ND was critical of Ohio State and Cincinnati academics In the original cbssports.com piece that appeared Tuesday Freeman compared Notre Dame’s stringent academic culture to that of Ohio State and UC “You don't go to class (at places like that)?” Freeman said rhetorically you’re forced every day to go to class.” Freeman said the interviewer deleted “If” from the beginning of the quote which he insisted changed the entire meaning Cbssports.com later added the “if,” to make it read “If you don’t go to class… .”  Freeman explained to 97.1 The Fan that his comment was meant to contrast Notre Dame’s limited capacity for online classes against the ability of larger schools like Ohio State and UC to offer courses online but Freeman should be careful not to protest too much because right before his “If you don’t go to class” comment he said this: “You can’t cheat academics at Notre Dame.” Here you go: “You can’t cheat academics at Notre Dame,” followed directly by “If you don’t go to class at places like (Ohio State and those degrees represented.” A young coach with limited media experience is stumbling to find the sweet spot for how he expresses his thoughts publicly He wants Notre Dame fans to know he is all in with the Fighting Irish but still needs to work on how his messaging comes across to outsiders especially outsiders (Ohio State and Cincinnati) who used to be insiders Freeman’s colorful candor adds spice to the 2022 season opener between Ohio State and Notre Dame even Ryan Day would benefit from employing the pre-apology technique I find so freeing Imagine Day never having to apologize for saying “Jim puts the hardy har har in Harbaugh.” roller@dispatch.com @rollerCD Notre Dame.css-3hcdeq{margin:0;font-size:1.2rem;-webkit-text-decoration:none;text-decoration:none;font-family:Proxima It also came with a caption that read: “Walked the dogs.” Notre Dame has every right to celebrate, especially after that huge win against an SEC powerhouse The Fighting Irish’s defense stepped up in a big way to stun the Bulldogs.  Notre Dame limited the Bulldogs to just 296 total yards from scrimmage while also holding them to only 2-for-12 on third downs The Fighting Irish’s stop unit also forced two Georgia turnovers Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Riley Leonard (13) celebrates the win against Georgia Bulldogs at Caesars Superdome.  Coming up next for Notre Dame is another tough challenge in the CFP semifinals, where the Fighting Irish will meet the No. 6 seed Penn State Nittany Lions in the Capital One Orange Bowl on Jan WASHINGTON — Notre Dame’s 2023-2024 men’s basketball team was unpredictable head coach Micah Shrewsberry made it clear: giving it one’s all wasn’t just encouraged As the clock hit zero Wednesday in Capital One Arena Notre Dame found itself on the wrong side of the scoreboard to a talented (yet also streaky) Wake Forest team looking to clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament grit and determination that has become synonymous with Micah Shrewsberry’s name Notre Dame got off to a rough start in the game’s first few minutes While the Irish shot the ball spectacularly well against Georgia Tech Notre Dame seemed to revert back to that norm against Wake Forest.  The Demon Deacons mostly played a 2-3 zone Yet Wake’s guards pushed so far up near half court that even 3-point shots were being contested This team found itself close throughout the first 25 minutes.  With freshman guards Markus Burton and Braeden Shrewsberry picking up two fouls in the first 13 minutes along with sophomore forward Kebba Njie the Irish role players had to be ready to contribute Carey Booth stepped up with a surprising performance from behind the arc The freshman forward  picked up 11 points including going 3 for 6 from deep before halftime Among all Irish players who played at least 20 minutes Booth had the highest stop percentage at 59.5% Stop percentage estimates the rate of defensive possessions where the opposing team did not score Notre Dame’s primary problem was stopping Wake Forest near the rim Wake had an unlucky day when the teams met a few weeks ago — one of its worst performances of the year Senior forward Matt Zona saw minutes as well but all of Wake’s bigs had a few inches on Zona making it difficult for him to stay competitive defensively Micah Shrewsberry was particularly fed up with Njie after he lost the ball near the hoop on offense causing the Irish coach to burn his first timeout with 2:08 left in the first half Notre Dame limited its mistakes late to keep it to a 6-point game going into the halftime break.  The game gradually started slipping away from there Notre Dame struggled to get fouls called to begin the second half — although there was a lot of contact on both sides of the floor Both Burton and Braeden Shrewsberry picked up their third personal fouls before the 12-minute media timeout Njie’s play didn’t improve in the second half as he went scoreless in the final 20 minutes.  The Irish energy and enthusiasm began to run low This was an arena full of Wake Forest fans and neutral observers — and it showed but with Burton playing with four fouls with five minutes to go Notre Dame’s shooting went cold in the second half The team went 0 for 8 from three while shooting 20% from the field scoring 21 points off of 12 for 12 shooting from the free-throw line Sophomore forward Tae Davis played nicely amidst Njie’s off day Wake Forest head coach Steve Forbes explained that containing Burton was key to the teams’ success we wanted to make Burton a passer [and] not let him go downhill in the ball screen and the zoom action,” Forbes said “I thought we did [for the] most part a really good job of that… We were up to touch Micah Shrewsberry’s postgame comments were limited but after congratulating the Demon Deacons on their win for their effort — not just today but this whole season,” he said Wake Forest’s win keeps its NCAA Tournament hopes alive. Going into the game, Wake Forest was listed as part of the dreaded “First Four Out” per ESPN’s Joe Lunardi To cement their status as a tournament team the Demon Deacons will have to beat Pittsburgh in tomorrow's 4-5 seed matchup Wake Forest’s team has not made the tournament since a 2017 loss in the First Four Forbes is in his fourth season coaching the team.  the Irish don’t seem like a prime candidate for the NIT there is the College Basketball Invitational — who would accept Notre Dame in a heartbeat However this is typically reserved for mid-majors; no Power 5 team (or Big East) has played in the tournament since COVID-19 Micah Shrewsberry’s first year was a learning experience His team won games it shouldn’t have (against Virginia Clemson or Wake Forest) while losing to Western Carolina and the Citadel Beating Georgia Tech for the third time was a nice victory to close the season the team has already improved; Mike Brey’s final squad lost in the first round For Coach Shrewsberry, the work doesn’t end anytime soon, though. He’ll be individually meeting with players in the coming days to talk about their future with the program. The Irish have a solid class coming in, ranked 26th in the country by 247sports Four-stars Sir Mohammed and Cole Certa will provide Notre Dame with increased backcourt depth Notre Dame’s status next year depends on keeping players in South Bend While no team member has given any indication they may be pursuing other colleges or universities in the transfer portal no coach can ever be sure about what happens next.  Notre Dame’s situation is simple: Micah Shrewsberry needs to have Burton his son and at least one young post player — Njie or Booth — around to take the next step forward and compete for a spot in the NCAA Tournament.  Until then, the team is optimistic about its chances The ACC will see significant change next year Several veteran teams like Wake Forest will lose most of their starters there’s now an opening to take a step forward who played well in relief of Beck in the SEC Championship Game While the Bulldogs will have to adjust to having a new starting quarterback, Stockton moving into a starting role is also an adjustment for Notre Dame. Stockton has completed 25 of 32 passes on the season for 206 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. His only extended playing time of the season came in the SEC Championship Game when he was 12 of 16 passing for 75 yards and an interception. Freeman noted that he has been impressed by Stockton when he was gotten opportunities. “There’s some things he does really, really well, within their system,” Freeman said. “He makes really good decisions. He makes fast decisions. He obviously can extend plays with his feet. A little bit more QB run. But we’re still going to plan to see the things we’ve seen their offense do, no matter who’s in at quarterback.” Top 101Shane BeamerPuts NCAA on blast Hot3Trump By clicking "Subscribe to Newsletter", I agree to On3's Privacy Notice, Terms and use of my personal information described therein Georgia announced in a statement on Monday that Beck is out for the season after undergoing surgery to repair his UCL Beck and his family had been exploring options for him to be able to continue to play this year but ultimately it was determined that surgery was the only choice “Georgia quarterback Carson Beck underwent successful surgery Monday on his right elbow to repair his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), performed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles, Ca,” the statement shared “A full recovery is expected with throwing to begin spring of 2025.” Beck suffered the injury on the final play of the first half against Texas in the SEC Championship.  Hot3Trump, Saban blastedNIL order ripped On3 is a registered trademark of On3 Media While Notre Dame football star running back Jeremiyah Love deemed himself healthy enough to play against the Penn State Nittany Lions in the College Football Playoff semifinals Multiple practice videos were shared this weekend and you can be the judge at what you are seeing I don’t like Love’s chances to make a major impact on Thursday. "You don't go to class (at places like that)?" He said the CBS Sports story left out the word "if" at the beginning of the sentence referring to attending class CBS Sports has subsequently changed its story to add the word to the quote "When you see a quote that says Marcus Freeman says 'You don't go to class a place like that,' that changes the entire narrative He said he was making the point that Notre Dame didn't even offer online classes until COVID such classes are more limited than at large public universities such as Ohio State or Cincinnati He said he didn't believe he'd said anything inflammatory in the CBS Sports story until James Laurinaitis his former Ohio State teammate now on the Notre Dame coaching staff told him Tuesday about the stir on social media "I would never disrespect Ohio State," Freeman told Carpenter and Schlegel I would never say that and never disrespect my alma mater." Marcus Freeman has made comments about Ohio State in the past It's not the first time Freeman has made a comment perceived as disparaging toward the Buckeyes. In a piece last December in the Players' Tribune after being named the Fighting Irish's coach the Dayton native wrote about his decision as a high school recruit to sign with Ohio State over Notre Dame and noted it with regret "I just thank God that I didn’t make the wrong decision twice," he wrote of taking the Notre Dame job A few days later, Freeman addressed that comment in an opening statement at a news conference “I want to make sure to be very clear that the relationships the time that I spent in Columbus have impacted me and the relationships I built will be with me for the rest of my life," Freeman said Bill Rabinowitz covers Ohio State football for The Columbus Dispatch.
