vegetables and residents' hair in the town of Evin-Malmaison
show lead levels sometimes more than 91 times the norm
the only café still in operation in the northern French town of Evin-Malmaison
as well as on the storefronts of the pharmacy and the town hall
posters invite pregnant residents and those with children to get tested to check the level of lead in their blood
The town of 4,600 inhabitants is next to the former site of Metaleurop
which was the largest lead and zinc smelting plant in Europe
the plant continues to poison the area (which is permanently downwind of the site)
just like the areas of Noyelles-Godault and Courcelles-lès-Lens
Here people have long turned a blind eye to soil and air pollution
even the unions of this Seveso-II-classified site (a European directive aiming to reduce the risk of technical and chemical accidents and protect the environment) avoided the subject
The French journalist Martin Boudot made a documentary about the foundry for TV channel France 5
The results of tests on samples taken from vegetables and the hair of 29 children and 21 adults in Evin-Malmaison caused a shock
A biomedical laboratory in the Paris hospital Lariboisière found that thyme leaves from vegetable gardens in the town have a lead level more than 91 times higher than the norm
while leeks were found to contain 80 times the normal amount
conducted with a Canadian environmental toxicology lab
confirmed the presence of lead in hair follicles and in the first centimeter of hair after the root
On the site itself of the former foundry – now operated by French utility company Suez Environnement
which has built a waste recycling center on the site – analyses show that lead concentration is 774 times higher than the threshold
requiring the removal of land to a depth of 50 centimeters (300 mg/kg)

with a JD store finally set to open in Paris next year
as well as a flagship in New York — one year after entering the U.S
other new stores are planned across Europe
The first major opening will take place in Paris
though it doesn’t yet have a presence in the French capital
The sneaker and sportswear chain will plug this hole next year
by opening a flagship store in the city “on Rue de Rivoli
with a 2,000-square-metre retail area,” said Olivier Benon
in charge of European expansion for JD Sports
JD plans to open some ten stores in France this year (notably
“About ten new openings in France are already on the cards for 2020
JD’s expansion drive in France is comparable to that of German chain Snipes
which recently entered the French market and has an appetite for new openings
Benon mentioned Snipes as “[JD’s] strongest competitor
one that is distinctive for having its own brand.”
JD’s product range features both footwear and apparel
and some of its stores actually generate more sales with clothes
“Nike and Adidas have an extensive presence
Sergio Tacchini is making a genuine come-back
as are North Face and Patagonia in the outdoor segment
as well as the sportswear lines by Armani and Hugo Boss,” said Benon
JD is stepping up the pace of its expansion elsewhere in Europe
The other major challenge JD Sports is undertaking is to carve out a space for itself in the kingdom of sneakers and streetwear
The British group first tested the waters last year
Twenty of its shops are now being transformed into JD stores (six are already open for business)
and the group plans a major opening in 2020
with a 2,000-square-metre flagship store on Times Square in New York
