The Planetones dye solution by Noyon Lanka is the first of its kind to be certified by the Control Union
The innovation is part of Noyon’s commitment to ensuring the responsible use of chemicals within its value chain
Dyeing and the treatment of fabric are estimated to generate as much as 20% of wastewater worldwide and are key contributors to the fashion industry’s overall environmental footprint
including its contribution to carbon emissions
At a press conference in Sri Lanka this week
representatives at Noyon Lanka noted that changing the approach to dyeing and making this process more environment-friendly could be one way forward in bringing brands
retailers and the entire apparel industry closer to their sustainability goals
“This innovation is an important milestone in Noyon’s sustainability journey,” said Noyon Lanka CEO Ashiq Lafir
“We are actively collaborating with other stakeholders in the supply chain as well to make this solution available to them
which we hope will initiate momentum towards producing a garment that exclusively uses natural dyes in the near future
this only represents the beginning of our journey
Through innovations that are currently in development
we are confident that we can produce solutions that are even more sustainable.”
Planetones complies with the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL) – Level 1
besides carrying a Transaction Certificate (TC) from the Control Union
Made using natural colour sources or ‘shades of nature’ – such as cranberry and achiote
Planetones has been tried and tested on a range of nylon bases
water and energy saving are estimated at approximately 30% and 15%
boasting what Noyon Lanka hails as a significant reduction of chemical load to effluent
The solution is said to have a 85-95% colour match
an “unprecedented figure” for natural dyes given that no two natural sources (two fruits of the same type
In terms of colourfastness – a fabric’s resistance to change in its colour characteristics or the transfer of colourants to adjacent materials – the solution scores 2.5 – 3.5 to light and 3.5 to other materials
colour repeatability is also high – between 90-95%
Planetones currently offers 32 shades of colour and has already been commercialised with two leading European fashion brands
The dye solution and its intellectual property (IP) will be extended by Noyon to other supply chain partners within the MAS Group – enabling manufacturers such as Trischel
and Prym to also offer certified naturally-dyed elastics
Noyon reduced its absolute emissions by 8.4% in 2021 and seeks to reduce a further 12.6% in 2022
Noyon Lanka recently established a joint venture with PT Sinar Para Taruna (SIPATATEX) Indonesia
adding to its raw material capabilities in the country

Research cameras reveal a snow leopard’s long-distance travels in Mongolia
“I know this cat!” thought Choidogjamts “Choidog” Byambasuren
a scientist from Snow Leopard Trust’s Mongolia NGO partner
Snow Leopard Conservation Foundation (SLCF)
as he sat painstakingly analyzing the snow leopard camera images from South Gobi’s Tost Mountains recently
Each cat has a unique spot pattern but the meticulous task of identifying individual snow leopards from the many research camera images is highly-skilled work
Our long-term goal for using the GPS camera data is to understand snow leopard population numbers and dynamics over space and time
A cat from the Tost region that Choidog had identified and ‘named’ while analyzing images from neighboring Noyon Mountains earlier this year
The images revealed that Rando had been in Noyon in January and in Tost in May
He had traveled 86 kilometers as the crow flies crossing the relatively flat
desert steppe between the two mountainous regions
the Snow Leopard Trust and SLCF have been conducting a long-term study of snow leopards in South Gobi mountains using both GPS-collaring and research cameras to study the cats
With GPS data we follow snow leopard movements at a detailed level
tracking a collared cat’s location several times a day
The collars provide groundbreaking information on home range sizes and dispersal
interactions between individuals and even den site locations
also allow us to follow snow leopards movements
As individual cats pass in front of the cameras
we fit the information together over time and estimate snow leopard numbers in different regions
“Choidog’s finding adds vital information on how snow leopards are moving between South Gobi mountains
Such movements are important for the exchange of animals and genetic material between these regions.”
We can’t wait to see where Rando shows up next
This long-term ecological study is in collaboration with Snow Leopard Conservation Foundation in Mongolia and Snow Leopard Trust

Sustainability is often considered a buzzword

it should be intricately woven into the fabric of our business model

This ethos serves as the cornerstone of our existence
as global awareness of environmental issues grows

What factors have contributed to Noyon’s evolution from a traditional lace manufacturer to a leader in innovative textile solutions
our focus has shifted from levers lace towards manufacturing intricate knitted lace suitable for lingerie and other applications
utilizing advanced machinery and techniques
This evolution has positioned us at the forefront of lace production
particularly in the realm of intimate wear
Building on this strong core business platform
we are now diversifying into new adjacencies such as our Inntrix platform
This innovative platform combines the aesthetic beauty of lace with the functional properties of performance fabrics
offering a unique blend that has already garnered interest from leading performance wear brands
we have also developed high-absorbency fabric platforms catering to needs such as urinary incontinence and feminine hygiene solutions
we have already introduced the Planetones natural dye solution that we spoke about earlier which has the broader potential of being applied across other industries
These innovations underscore our commitment to expanding beyond traditional lace production and exploring new product platforms and solutions

including solar panels and working towards circularity with like-minded partners and collaborators
Noyon’s future vision is deeply intertwined with our commitment to sustainability
recognizing the pivotal role that fabric and textile manufacturers play in shaping the global fashion industry
setting a new standard for sustainable fashion

ECONOMYNEXT – Noyon Lanka, a unit of Sri Lanka’s MAS apparel group has developed a new plant extract-based dye that reduces water and energy use in washing plants and makes the industry more environmentally friendly
The ‘Planetones’ branded dye is also biodegradable
“We initiated the plant extraction process at our Noyon research and development labs in Sri Lanka,” Manjula Jayawardena
the Director General Manager of Innovation at Noyon Lanka said
when it comes to the commercial state we cannot do that in a lab and we have to go for partners with bigger capacity.”
“We bring these extracts to our facilities and the formulation is being done here.”
Planetones dye reduces water use in the washing cycle by 30 percent and energy 15 percent
The dye has also been cleared by Control Union
but Jayawardena said dye can be applied to all synthetic materials
Jayawardena said polyester and cotton products with natural dying will be also presented to the market going forward
Noyon’s facility in Biyagama is capable of making 500 kilograms per colour per month and expects to expand the capacity according to the demand
The firm has started commercializing the product in French and Italian markets under Etam and Yamamay brands
The plant extract-based dye is expected to cost around 8 percent more than synthetic dyes
“Some of our customers have already working on taking the product to the market,” Sunesh Rodrigo
the General Manager of Sales and Marketing at Noyon Lanka said
we will have another 3-4 brands that will be commercializing our products.”
“A leading brand in the industry is currently in discussion with us for this product
We also have regional level manufacturers who are interested in the product
such as in India and the Far East.” (Colombo/ Aug 31/2022)
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka signed one agreement and four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Vietnam on bilateral cooperation on customs affairs
The MoUs were signed in the presence of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Vietnam leader Luong Cuong
“These agreements aim to facilitate knowledge sharing and the exchange of diplomats
while also encouraging the organization and participation in academic and research programmes
training initiatives and conferences related to diplomacy,” the President’s Media Division (PMD) said in a statement
“They also provide a platform for a broad range of trade promotion activities
including the exchange of trade and market intelligence
joint participation in trade fairs and exhibitions in both countries
and the organization of business networking events for private sector representatives.”
“It is expected that this enhanced cooperation will unlock significant market opportunities for both countries
particularly in the sectors of value-added agriculture
The agreement was signed on enhancing cooperation and mutual support in customs affairs between the two countries
The first MoU was signed on cooperation in machinery and equipment manufacturing between the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam and the Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development of Sri Lanka and the second one was inked between the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Department of Agriculture of Sri Lanka on cooperation in agriculture
The third one was between an the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute (BIDTI) of Sri Lanka and the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam
The Fourth MoU was between the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency and the Sri Lanka Export Development Board on trade promotion cooperation
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka will go for long delayed nation-wide Local Government (LG) for the first time in seven years with the election is seen as a litmus test for President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s Marxists Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)-led ruling National People’s Power (NPP) amid falling popularity
NPP won the presidential election and parliament election in 2024
but has so far struggling to fulfil its key promises made during the last year’s election campaign including bringing back hidden money in foreign countries and arresting the culprits who are involved in some key corruption and murder cases
The election also comes at a time when all opposition parties have launched a campaign to expose President Dissanayake administration’s alleged misleading false statements in the past
will serve not only as a litmus test for the government’s popularity but also as a referendum on the promises made during its rise to power
After more than two years without elected LG bodies
these elections carry significant political and administrative implications
They come at a time when public trust in politicians has dwindled
and hopes for genuine reform remain largely unmet
The voting will start at 0700 hours and end at 1600 hours local time with 17.2 million people out of the 21.5 million population are eligible to vote to elect 8,287 members into 339 local government bodies which includes 28 Municipal Councils
the Chairman of the Election Commission requested the voters to use their franchise rights as early as possible on Tuesday
“If you have not received the polling card
you still can collect it from your post office
still you can vote with a valid identity card,” he said in a recorded video sent to the media
The LG polls are critically important for President Dissanayake’s government
which came to power last year amid a wave of popular support following the collapse of the previous administration
backed by a coalition led by the JVP-dominated NPP
swept into office promising sweeping reforms
and a reset of Sri Lanka’s political culture
and many of the transformative policies remain either partially implemented or stalled
For a government that campaigned on radical change
the LG polls represent the first real electoral challenge since assuming office
A strong showing would reaffirm public trust and provide the political capital needed to push ahead with reforms that have so far faced resistance from the bureaucracy and entrenched interests
a weak performance would signal waning support and embolden opposition forces
potentially destabilizing the administration’s broader reform agenda
It is also a test of the NPP’s ability to translate national-level rhetoric into grassroots support
Sri Lanka has functioned without elected LG bodies
a situation that has significantly weakened local governance
Administrators appointed by the central government currently oversee local affairs
leading to growing frustration among communities over lack of accountability
These unelected officials often lack the mandate or incentive to address local concerns effectively
contributing to a sense of democratic deficit
LG bodies play a critical role in the day-to-day lives of citizens by managing public services
In a country with deep regional disparities
the absence of functioning LG institutions undermines participatory democracy and development
Their restoration is essential for revitalizing civic engagement
and decentralizing power—key goals of President Dissanayake’s stated reform agenda
holding LG elections is not merely a political necessity but a constitutional and democratic imperative
the LG polls offer a rare opportunity to assert their voice in a system that has often marginalized public participation
In the aftermath of the economic crisis and political upheavals of recent years
many citizens feel betrayed by successive governments
The LG election is their chance to either reaffirm their support for the current government or signal discontent through the ballot box
The expectations are high with people wanting jobs
Many also see the LG elections as a way to hold the government accountable for its performance
Voter turnout and participation levels will thus be a crucial indicator of public sentiment and political engagement
though many political analysts expect the turnout in the May 6 polls will be less than the last year’s elections
Despite the initial optimism surrounding President Dissanayake’s leadership
The government’s failure to deliver tangible results in key areas such as economic recovery
and systemic reform has bred disillusionment
Critics argue that while the rhetoric remains strong
the actual governance has been marked by delays
and compromises with elements of the old guard
cost of living remains high despite disinflation for the past eight months
and unemployment continues to plague the youth
These everyday challenges have a direct impact on the electorate’s perception of government performance
While many still believe in the president’s sincerity
frustration is growing over the slow pace of change and the gap between campaign promises and lived reality
The LG polls will reflect whether the government still enjoys a honeymoon period—or if the public has begun to lose patience
government leaders have renewed their pledges to bring about structural reforms
They have promised to strengthen decentralization
and ensure more efficient and accountable service delivery
there is renewed focus on digitizing local governance
and increasing public participation in decision-making
and revamping the economy have yet to materialize
Some NPP-led leaders have touted their record of clean governance and pragmatic solutions
Whether these promises can sway an increasingly cynical electorate remains to be seen
Much depends on the credibility of candidates
and the government’s ability to show progress in the weeks leading up to the election
One of the more striking aspects of the LG election landscape is the apparent weakness of opposition parties
has been significantly diminished following its poor performance in national elections
which suffered a major loss of legitimacy following the 2022 economic collapse and mass protests
continues to struggle with internal divisions and a tainted reputation
The main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB)
has failed to present a compelling alternative narrative that resonates widely with the electorate
Much of the opposition’s weakness stems from a lack of clear leadership
they are unable to capitalize on the government’s shortcomings
This disarray plays to the advantage of the ruling coalition
which—despite its own challenges—still appears more unified and organized
this dynamic also raises concerns about the quality of democratic competition and the lack of effective checks and balances
Predicting the outcome of the LG polls is challenging given the complexity of Sri Lanka’s political landscape
but with fewer votes than it got in the last parliamentary polls
Though the NPP is likely to win as a single party in most of the 339 bodies
the party is expected to struggle to establish the councils in some bodies given the mixed electoral system in place
which is likely particularly from disillusioned youth and economically marginalized groups
could also skew outcomes in unpredictable ways
If the government manages to secure a clear majority in LG bodies
it will be seen as an endorsement of its mandate and provide breathing space to push forward with reforms
if the results show a significant erosion of support or gains for independent or minor party candidates
it could force a recalibration of government strategy and possibly trigger internal dissent
the results will serve as a barometer for national elections in the future and set the tone for the remainder of Dissanayake’s presidency

The charitable organisation has recently arranged to buy the field behind the centre with a view to providing additional facilities for the community
the existing entrance and exit points would be closed and a new access road created from the gateway next to a derelict greenhouse on the La Route du Longfrie side
A new playground would be created in the field with the existing one turned over for parking and the area around the centre would be pedestrianised
The centre has suffered badly from a lack of parking for many years and the plan
along with the creation of more spaces adjoining the access road through the field
would increase parking from the current 30 spaces to about 80
Styx Centre director Sue Noyon said there were almost 2,000 people movements at the centre each week and that did not include one-off events such as parties and quiz nights
‘Traffic and Highway Services is very supportive of what we hope to do,’ she said
The decision will rest ultimately with the planners and Styx Centre is seeking feedback from the public
‘The field is classed as an area of important open land but it can be turned over to community use as it’s part of the village hub,’ said Mrs Noyon
‘Most of the neighbours in the immediate area are very supportive on the road safety aspect.’
The proposal also includes a therapeutic gardening area and an area for community events such as fetes
Styx Centre aims to promote and facilitate a range of affordable
funded and subsidised activities that focus on health
The proposal is subject to planning approval and sourcing of funding
It is a long-term project with an estimated completion date of the end of 2021
The plans are currently on display in the centre foyer along with a box for comments
Styx Centre has written to neighbours in the immediate area telling them what is being proposed
An informal drop-in session will take place at the centre from 7pm on Thursday at which people will be able to have their questions answered

You are in: Guernsey > History > Occupation > How did islanders get the parcels
The Vega didn't appear by accident - she had been requested by Guernsey men
These men left the island to ask for the aid with the support of Guernsey officials
The island's desperate supply situation was made clear at the States meeting
With practically nothing to eat and the Hospital running out of supplies it was decided drastic action was needed
The plan was for someone to get away from the island and report to the Allied authorities on the situation
Deputy Cross and Acting Inspector of Police Bert Lamy were part of the small group involved in the scheme
The man chosen for the task was an ex-Mercantile Captain who was working as a fisherman
Fred Noyon made the arrangements for the escape while Deputy Cross prepared to ask the Essential Commodities Committee and the Board of Health for the true state of the island's stocks and supplies
Captain Noyon attended the States meeting and on the 3rd November headed to his boat
Normally fishermen were accompanied by German soldiers to make sure they returned but Captain Noyon and Bill Enticott were able to set out alone
It was a misty afternoon and they were later spotted by an American warship off the French coast
Within a fortnight the two men handed over the information to the British Authorities
According to the plan as long as everything went well they would be reported missing
On the evening of the 3rd November Thomas Ounsworth reported Bill Enticott who lived with him missing
The constable was told Bill was due to be back by curfew which had since passed
As he was due to be out with Fred Noyon the Constable visited his house and found him missing as well
The missing islanders were reported to the German Police who had no record of a missing boat
