With the hundreds of albums released this year
finding ten that rose to the top was surprisingly difficult — few were special enough to merit repeat listens
let alone remain in your brain long after the CD stops playing
Here are the rare records with a permanent place on our playlists in 2007:
‘‘Back to Black,’’ Amy Winehouse: The tragedy of 2007 is that Amy Winehouse is now simply known as the ‘‘Rehab’’ chick with the drug habit
not as the gifted singer-songwriter who created the most compelling album of the year
soulful voice is dazzling enough on its own; add the retro-soul licks and the alternately hilarious
and it’s an album that you just cannot shut off
it can’t begin to reflect how amazing ‘‘Back to Black’’ truly is
“The Bird and the Bee,’’ The Bird and the Bee: Imagine the Carpenters on an acid
That’s the best way to describe the surreal pop debut of The Bird and the Bee
comprised of the duo Inara George and Greg Kurstin
but the lyrics are anything but — one of the album’s best tracks is ‘‘(Expletive) Boyfriend.’’
‘‘Finding Forever,’’ Common: Maybe Common is just too darn clever and crafty for his own good
he put out an excellent rap disc that didn’t get the attention it deserved
but perhaps only a select group can appreciate the intellect
and charm he dispenses with each rhyme: oThis ain’t for the ‘‘Crank Dat (Soulja Boy)’’ crowd
Though rap certainly needs some Common Sense these days more than ever
The ‘‘Once’’ soundtrack: ‘‘Once,’’ starring Marketa Irglova and the lead singer of the Frames
was the perfect romantic movie that flew under mainstream radar
The same could be said about its wonderful soundtrack
Irglova’s sweet voice is the perfect accompaniment to Hansard’s raspy vocals — they don’t need much else
and the simple production of just a piano here or guitar there makes the music even more intimate than the touching lyrics convey
‘‘Graduation’’ is actually West’s weakest album — but when you consider the first two
‘‘The College Dropout’’ and ‘‘Late Registration,’’ were nothing short of brilliant
West’s use of techno beats give some tracks a more experimental sounding vibe
but it’s his always clever rhymes that make you listen again and again
Kelly: Given the nonsense that permeates 1/3 of this disc
‘‘Double Up’’ shouldn’t even be on this list
But how can it not be when the rest of the songs are so crazy and so good
When you can make a prison visit a must-listen-to groove (‘‘Best Friend’’)
you are truly creating the stuff of genius
he gets extra credit for that whole ‘‘Trapped in the Closet’’ saga
‘‘As I Am,’’ Alicia Keys: Though it’s not a perfect album
it contains perhaps three of the most perfect songs you can find in pop today — ‘‘Wreckless Love,’’ ‘‘Lesson Learned’’ and the slow-jam piece of ecstasy otherwise known as ‘‘Kiss Me Like You’ll Never Kiss Me Again.’’ And thankfully
most of the other songs on ‘‘As I Am’’ are strong enough to make you want to listen to the CD in its entirety
Still,’’ Lily Allen: Lily Allen doesn’t have the greatest voice
as her live performances this year bore out
But you’d never guess that by listening to her charming debut
buoyed infectious ska-pop beats and wry lyrics
Like Winehouse’s ‘‘Back to Black,’’ producer Mark Ronson’s handiwork elevates this CD
‘‘Good Girl Gone Bad,’’ Rihanna: Rihanna’s hard-driving sophomore CD blended pop-rock
electronica and a dash of R&B for slick and sexy club music
It also separated her from the wanna-be Beyonce pack
Though much of the credit for this disc’s allure goes to the producers who came up with the catchy beats
Rihanna delivers a powerful punch despite her somewhat thin voice — its her emotive vocals that helped to make ‘‘Umbrella’’ one of the most requested songs of the year
and what makes the ballad ‘‘I Hate That I Love You’’ so passionate
Sri-Lankan raised rapper got even more eclectic — if that’s even possible — with ‘‘Kala,’’ a mish-mash of Indian beats

Other than shattering the very foundations of Scottish political life
Its new MPs are trying to take over the much-coveted corner seat on the “rebels’ bench” in the House of Commons
The seat itself is on the corner of the frontbench along the aisle from the opposition frontbench
This seat has been occupied by Dennis Skinner
Labour backbench veteran and monarch-bothering socialist firebrand
since he wrested it from David Owen in the early Eighties
But he has been sitting on that row ever since Edward Heath became Prime Minister in 1970; Skinner has been an MP – the “Beast of Bolsover” – since that year
But the new SNP contingent of 56 MPs attempted today to steal Skinner’s seat
in parliament’s first vote since it dissolved for the general election
SNP MPs took it in turns to sit in Skinner’s seat in order to reserve it for their party
Skinner managed to force them out of the seat
but he warns the SNP MPs he won’t give up without a fight when parliament sits next week
Skinner reserves the seat with a prayer card
He won’t give away how he’ll beat the 56 MPs’ rota system – “It’s like a Premier League football match; you don’t reveal your plans” – but says
“I’m not going to go quietly… I’ve never had any trouble in 30-odd years [reserving the seat] when Big Ben chimes
and they are determined to try and get me out
It tells you a lot about them – the idea that you’re going to throw out an 83-year-old after 45 years
It’s a great political victory to be on the rebel bench
I don’t think some of them understand how it works at all.”
Skinner’s main gripe isn’t even the breaking of tradition
It’s that he believes the SNP MPs are slavishly following instructions
“They don’t understand what they’re doing on behalf of the leadership,” he says
but they are just being lobby fodder for their leader
I’ve always been a backbencher; I’ve never been lobby fodder.”
I ask Skinner what he said to the new MPs he clashed with this afternoon in the chamber
“You don’t want to be in Westminster full-time
“You want to get away from Westminster with your Barnett Formula
so that my constituents have to pay money to Scotland
They were ordered to do it [try and take my seat].”
Keep an eye out for what might be the bloodiest political battle of our times
Everyone knows the story that the musical ÒAnnieÓ tells: Annie battles Miss Hannigan
Annie leaves the orphanage for a huge mansion
In Theatre Winter HavenÕs upcoming production of the Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin musical
But director Katrina Ploof said this version will emphasize the love story that has often taken a backseat to the orphanage action
sensitive love story between Daddy Warbucks and Annie
He realizes what has been missing in his life and finds it in Annie
He also knows that itÕs not his world anymore Ñ his world now belongs to the soul of a little girl,Ó Ploof said
Thursday is opening night for ÒAnnie,Ó which will run through Oct
seeing it at the Goodspeed Opera House long before its 1977 opening on Broadway
ÒI remember sitting in the audience bawling because I wanted (Daddy Warbucks and Annie) to work things out so they could share their lives,Ó she recalled
Ploof toured in the national production of the show
playing ÒA Star to Be,Ó who belts out part of the song ÒNYC.Ó
She also remembers the pre-Broadway show as a Òsweet
small productionÓ that later became Òsomething like ÔHello
The production in Winter Haven will reintroduce the show as a smaller love story that allows the audience to see the characters in a new way
if youÕve seen a professional production of ÒAnnie,Ó or one of the two filmed versions
ÒyouÕll likely see something new here,Ó she said
what would the point of replicating what has already been done
Why go to the theater to see something thatÕs exactly like you remembered it
You could just stay home in your slippers and watch the movie on TV,Ó Ploof said
There will be some interesting additions to the TWH production
Plouf cast 15 Òtriple-threatsÓ who could sing
ÒI decided to cast Ôtriple-threatsÕ instead of just filling orphan roles regardless of how many girls it took
instead of having drops to show the background scenery
TWHÕs production has solid sets and scene changes that are Òentirely orphan-driven,Ó the director said
the orphans interact in spots where they shouldnÕt necessarily appear
ÒItÕs fun to see the orphans shoo out the Cabinet members,Ó Ploof said
Opening night will feature an appearance by Krista Abney McGee
who performed the lead in a TWH production of ÒAnnieÓ 16 years ago
whoÕs eight months pregnant and living in Texas
Ploof has directed shows at TWH for the past eight years
including the last seasonÕs ÒMoon Over Buffalo,Ó a slapstick farce
ÒThis is a story that concerns what we as a society are all about."

With the popular names in gospel reggae apparently going missing in action
up-and-coming gospel reggae artiste Othis 'Rychus' Jones believes the genre is going through a rebuilding process
stage shows are scarce and the radio is not fully supportive of the music
Goddy Goddy and Prodigal Son were popular names on the tongues of music lovers
"The more prominent gospel artistes peaked and then decreased in their presence and nobody picked up where they left off
There needed to be some vibrant young acts to take up the mantle and carry it," Rychus said
Rychus disclosed that gospel artistes were faced with thorny challenges
"It's not that artistes don't have the ability and it is not that we aren't making ourselves available
but there aren't many record labels taking up young gospel artistes
We are also lacking in effective marketing to facilitate our success in the field," he said
but provision must be put in place to expose the artistes
We get a little time on Irie FM on Sundays
but that is not enough time to create a hit
We need more recognition and airplay from all radio stations
even in prime hours like other genres because gospel reggae is still Jamaican music
To play gospel music for an hour for an entire week is not enough," he said
The artiste believes the dwindling of stage shows has also helped to cripple the gospel industry
"A lot of the stage shows aren't getting sponsored
and shows like Genesis have been scaled down because of this
we stand to gain less from dubplates because of the content of gospel music
This is why the gospel music fraternity needs the help from all industry players," he said
The current top artiste representing gospel reggae
other big names have gone abroad in search of greener pastures
but I decided to stay here and build my thing from ground up," he continued
"A lot of artistes are looking to expand their brands
while others became frustrated because they are not appreciated out here
but people overseas appreciate our music and that is why many have gone overseas …
Omari agreed with Rychus that there needs to be more media coverage for gospel artistes
"There are young people to replace the missing acts
It's hard to get coverage as an established act so you can imagine a young artiste …
Prodigal Son and so many others and wi naah stop," Omari said
Omari also had some advice for young gospel reggae hopefuls
Not because yu a duh the Lord work nuh mean seh success a guh drop inna yu lap
I do street campaigns and promote my music myself
You also need to do music that is relatable," the deejay said
Omari recently released his debut book called Why Me God

What can we expect in Grey’s Anatomy season 21
Just as we got a relationship that we could get behind, Grey’s Anatomy has thrown us a curveball
we knew that Midori Francis was leaving the series
That meant we weren’t really sold on the Mika/Jules romance
but when you announce a character is leaving
Now it looks like we have that exit storyline
At the end of the previous episode
Mika shared with Jules that her sister had been diagnosed with rectal cancer
The promo makes it clear that things aren’t looking great
Bailey and Ben need to figure things out now that Ben is back at the hospital
Bailey got her job back as the head of the residency program
That’s something that will play out throughout this episode
It’s Jo and Link’s story that I’m intrigued about when it comes to this episode
They get some “surprising news,” and I can’t help but think that this is going to be that they find out they’re expecting twins
Check out the promo and synopsis for Grey’s Anatomy season 21

At the end of the previous episode, Mika shared with Jules that her sister had been diagnosed with rectal cancer. It’s time to find out how bad that is, especially considering she is only 22. The promo makes it clear that things aren’t looking great, with it being at Stage 3 already. This means there is a little hope, but Mika is terrified.
While all this happens, Bailey and Ben need to figure things out now that Ben is back at the hospital. Bailey got her job back as the head of the residency program, and that means that she is Ben’s boss. What will that do to their personal life? Can they keep everything separated? That’s something that will play out throughout this episode.
It’s Jo and Link’s story that I’m intrigued about when it comes to this episode. They get some “surprising news,” and I can’t help but think that this is going to be that they find out they’re expecting twins. It’s cliché, but this is a drama!

Next. Camryn Manheim Law & Order exit explained. Camryn Manheim Law & Order exit explained. dark
At the end of the previous episode of Grey's Anatomy, we learned Mika's sister has rectal cancer. In season 21, episode 4, we learn just how bad that is.
The Grey’s Anatomy fall finale brought about the end of one intern’s journey on the show as Dr. Mika Yasuda walked away from her job at Grey Sloan Memorial after losing her sister
Following her sister’s tragic death as a result of the car accident caused by Yasuda drifting to sleep at the wheel of her car
Yasuda attempted to return to work and push through things
as she returned to Grey Sloan it quickly became clear to her that she needed a change of scenery as this was no longer just her place of work now
The sudden exit of Yasuda came as a result of actress Midori Francis’ decision to exit the show just a few short years after joining the cast in season 19 as part of the new group of interns brought to Grey Sloan
little information was provided regarding the circumstances of her departure but it was hinted that Francis chose to step away from the show to pursue other career opportunities
in breaking her silence about leaving Grey’s Anatomy after three seasons on the show
Francis seemed to skirt questions about the decision to leave the show
Speaking with Deadline
Francis was directly asked what made her decide to walk away from Grey’s Anatomy
she instead danced around the question talking more about her love for the show and the desire to give Yasuda a proper sendoff than the reason she chose to walk away from the show
I watched the show when I was in middle school
I can still remember watching it with my friends and my mom and just being like
and I just thought that the characters were so cool and interesting,” Francis responded
“So when I joined this new group of interns
it was so surreal and awesome to be a part of that
it’s about coming together to find the right story
the right moment for Mika’s exit that could fit into the larger season and arc
and I think that the writers did such a good job
she’s so ambitious and she’s so competitive
so what would cause her to leave Grey Sloan
did they set that up well,” she added before discussing sitting down with the show’s current showrunner Meg Marinis to collaborate on Yasuda’s exit storyline
While there doesn’t seem to be any bad blood between Midori Francis and the creative team behind the show
we get a sense that we won’t be seeing Yasuda back in the halls of Grey Sloan anytime soon
Francis told Deadline show would be delighted to return to Grey’s Anatomy; however
she seemed to suggest it won’t be in the cards as she can’t see a world in which Yasuda would want to return to the hospital
These people and this world has become part of my trajectory of acting families
and I would be absolutely delighted to return
I think for Mika it would be triggering,” Francis revealed
It’s almost as if she didn’t want to fully close the door directly and used her character’s exit storyline to do the heavy lifting in hinting that it’s unlikely we’ll see Yasuda again
That doesn’t mean we won’t as Grey’s Anatomy has done an amazing job of bringing past characters into the fold from time to time after an actor’s initial exit
but we’ve also seen many actors leave and never return
I guess only time will tell which category Francis will fall into
The sudden exit of Yasuda came as a result of actress Midori Francis’ decision to exit the show just a few short years after joining the cast in season 19 as part of the new group of interns brought to Grey Sloan
Speaking with Deadline
Midori Francis is finally breaking her silence on her departure.
