Born from a series of imaginations about nature, Galaxy Arch’s La Petite Forêt installation is a maze
Enlivening the Taipingqiao Park in Shanghai at the 2024 Xintiandi Design Festival
curated around the theme ‘A hybrid playground’
the work sparks an exploration of freedom and joy in modern life
glowing in an enchanting play of light and shade
Galaxy Arch has shaped the installation from 33 steel-wood composite columns of varying lengths across a 3×4 grid
Each panel is rotated 120 degrees relative to the others
sharing a column to form an organically complex planar structure and distinct spatial experience
Each column is composed of an angle steel pair and two pairs of specially sectioned elm wood
connected to pre-embedded short column heads on the ground beam through sleeves for quick positioning and installation
Through bent steel plates and bolts they support semi-transparent panels made of steel and acrylic frames
carrying along their surfaces tree shadows and transmitting light
a deliberate structural distance gives a visual sense of being both connected and detached

A mairie in the north of France has come up with an unusual solution to help people dispose of their Christmas trees: collecting them with the help of a horse-drawn carriage
covered a 22 km route with a carriage on January 10
The environmental manager for the Petite-Forêt mairie Ludovic Berlemont
said the idea was born from a partnership with Caval’Trait
an organisation that owns Trait du Nord horses: “We organise horse-carriage rides for pensioners and the Christmas market already so we thought why not use these horses to also collect the Christmas trees and then recycle the trees into mulch.”
The mairie advertises the collection day locally and on its social media and residents can leave their trees outside their door
it also offered to re-plant any sapins en motte (potted Christmas trees)
Only two were picked up but Mr Berlemont hopes that there will be more next year
when more people know about the re-planting
The mulch from the trees is used to protect shrubs and trees from weeds and to make sure the soil stays humid
Mr Berlemont underlined the fact that using horses helps reduce pollution too
2024 was the fourth year that the collection took place
with double the number of trees picked up compared to 2020
The horses are also an exciting sight for children
many of whom braved the cold to get up close to the animals: “We always organise the collection day on a Wednesday or a Saturday (when children are off school) so that they come out to see and stroke the horses
right outside their house,” said Mr Berlemont
There are a few other places in France that collect Christmas trees with the help of horses
including Bérat (Haute-Garonne) and Fribourg (Moselle)

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour finally comes to Vancouver
Not only is this the first time she’s performed in the city since the 1989 World Tour (“Blank Space,” “Style,” “Shake it Off,” you remember)
it’s the very last leg of the record-breaking
iconic and culturally significant in her music career
For a ticketless Swiftie like myself (I taught myself the periodic table noble gases by writing a parody of “Mine” in eighth grade) it’s easy to get a little cynical about scalpers selling tickets for tens of thousands of dollars or tech bros renting out their downtown apartments for a grand a night
I am not going to sit here and pretend that going to a Taylor-themed dance party
bracelet-making sesh or boat cruise can compare to attending the concert itself… but hey
why not indulge in all the Eras-themed events the city has to offer
Are you ready for it? Local drag artist Alma Be is hosting a Swiftie drag show and dance party at the Junction on Friday
Don’t forget to bring cash for tips (and don’t blame me if you do)
Avoid the crowds chanting “More!” by partying it up a week before the Eras Tour hits Vancouver (and in Kitsilano’s Hollywood Theatre
a venue with downtown vibes that is notably not in the middle of the big ol’ city)
Feel just like Leo in San Tropez at this boat cruise hosted by Where It’s At Entertainment—Swiftie sailors take off on the “Burrard Queen” from False Creek. There’s six different events on offer next weekend
and some are all ages (so if you’re responsible for a young fan
you don’t need to say “You’re on your own
Oh my my my—embrace Tay’s country roots at the Yale’s Eras Tour after parties
The Granville Street bar is hosting parties every night of the tour (plus a kickoff party the night before)
This is where to hear the slammin’ screen doors post-concert… or to hang out all night
Fortune Sound Club is also hosting a Taylor-themed club night (if you’re getting overwhelmed
an “audio-visual experience” that plays the hits from “High School Musical
One Direction and everything in-between.” Sounds like my Spotify Wrapped
If you haven’t seen this Taylor impersonator on TikTok
Can you get tickets to her show starting at $17
Vanmag Power 50 alum (and cover star of our September/October issue) Kendall Gender is putting on an Eras-themed drag show at The Birdhouse on December 13… which is
after the tour has wrapped up and conveniently on Taylor Swift’s birthday
take the moment and taste it at the West End BIA’s Taylor-themed event
bracelet-making and a showing of the Eras Tour movie
You can make me a drink… or Minami can
The Yaletown restaurant is serving Swiftie cocktails all next week (the “Sparks Fly” has butterfly pea flower and lychee
and the “Cornelia Street” is garnished with cotton candy… very Lover-coded)
Science World’s Taylor Swift event encourages visitors to dress up in honour of their favourite era
Best believe the Capilano Suspension Bridge is still bejewelled—it’s annual Canyon Lights event is getting the Taylor Swift treatment next week and transforming into a “giant friendship bracelet.” It’s obviously going to be an incredible photo op
I think Taylor herself would approve of this event (personally I’ve been making her chai sugar cookies for years
even though there’s really no guarantee that it actually came from her)
PICA’s ode to Taylor comes in the form of a baking class
where participants will make sparkle poptarts
cinnamon bread (apparently Travis Kelce’s fave… no one fact-check that)
those internet-famous chai cookies and more
this is almost a full three weeks after the concert wraps up
Petite Forêt’s event will feature Taylor Swift’s songs sung by… Rapunzel
it’s crazier than the other events on this list

Brace yourself for your second dome of the day: Science World (adults, $35; kids 3 and up, $23). The Réseau Express Régional (RER) D and E lines in Paris are welcoming the introduction of new New Generation RER (RER NG) commuter trains
RER D and E are two of the five lines in the RER (Regional Express Network in English)
which is a hybrid commuter rail and rapid transit system serving Paris and its suburbs
The gradual introduction of the RER NG on the E line will ensure that engineers can make the train as reliable as possible before being deployed on the whole line

Alstom describes the trains as being more spacious
and points out that it has been specifically designed for dense areas
the company is confident that the train will bring lasting improvements to travel conditions for the hundreds of thousands of people who use the RER D and RER E lines each day
Alstom designed and built the new trains at its Valenciennes-Petite Forêt and Crespin sites in Hauts-de-France
with contributions to the project from nine of the company’s sixteen sites in France
which have worked closely with each other on the project
launched the train at Haussmann Saint-Lazare station in Paris

the authority that coordinates the different transport companies which operate in the Paris-area public transport network and the rest of the Île-de-France region
It has been pursuing a policy of upgrading all rolling stock on its railway network
and sees the arrival of the RER NG commuter train as an important milestone
It commissioned Alstom to design the train specifically for the Île-de-France region and its nine million daily commuters
The design incorporates the following features:
Nine hundred Alstom staff have been working on the project on a daily
alstom believes that the launch of the train demonstrates the expertise of its workforce
“It is with immense pride that we are today celebrating the commissioning of the RER NG commuter train on Line E
It is a very special moment in the life of a project when a train meets its first passengers
It is also a source of pride for all Alstom employees
