PIA - Pakistan International Airlines (PK, Islamabad International) stopped overflying Indian airspace on April 27
as tensions between the two countries escalate in the wake of an April 22 terrorist attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir
ch-aviation analysis of Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows that the Pakistani carrier's flights from Islamabad International and Lahore International to Kuala Lumpur International are now operated through China
Because the airline has to bypass the Tibetan Plateau for safety reasons
the detour adds around three hours of flight time compared to the original schedule
"The decision to avoid overflying [India] is just a precautionary measure
even though there is no NOTAM on the matter," PIA spokesperson told ch-aviation
Kuala Lumpur is PIA's only scheduled eastbound destination
The airline flies to Malaysia 2x weekly from Islamabad and weekly from Lahore
Following the attack, which was claimed by the Pakistani terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba, India took a number of retaliatory steps against Pakistan including revoking all visas and suspending the Indus Water Treaty. In response, Pakistan banned all trade with India and forbade airlines from that country from crossing its airspace

Across her oeuvre Pia Guilmoth has examined the physical and psychological landscape of Northeastern America
investigating the darkness and beauty underlying overlooked corners of the country
Sleep Creek (2019) co-authored with Dylan Hausthor and At Night Gardens Grow (2021)
she presented haunted scenes from New England and Maine
Since the release of her last book a lot has changed in Pia’s life; most notably transitioning gender and beginning Hormone Replacement Therapy
In her forthcoming monograph Flowers Drink the River Guilmoth continues to explore the environmental and emotional landscape of rural Maine but this time in the context of a period of intense change in her life
The resulting body of work is an elegy to the beauty of the change
growth and renewal that is inherent to nature
Jackson Mount: I want to start by talking about your new book Flowers Drink the River
Pia Guilmoth: In many ways the project isn’t about anything in particular
It’s more like a response to the myriad things that have happened in my life and in the world in the past few years
where each photograph isn’t about a particular thing but a conglomeration of so many emotions
in 2022 when my world felt like it was about to collapse
I had no money and was forced to move back into my parents’ house in rural New Hampshire
and a few hours away from my friends and any semblance of community
Things changed sort of abruptly when my friend told me she had an affordable place for me to live
It was still a long road to feeling alive and feeling like myself but things started feeling brighter
and the things that I lost during this journey
JM: This project and your previous body of work take place in rural Maine
PG: In 2011 I moved a few hours from New Hampshire to Maine to study for my undergraduate degree
and soon after moved to a small island that was only accessible by boat from the mainland
a few years ago and plan to be here for a long time
I live in an old shoe factory with an antique store below it
The building is beautiful; it has a weathered wood exterior and the floors have over 100 years of history from when there was a mill-powered shoe factory inside – nails in the floor
old business cards and dusty antiques everywhere
The village I live in has a population of about 1,000 people and is made up of working-class people
Most are tradespeople or farmers or work in one of the local gas stations or convenience stores
shit can get very scary at times – especially being a trans woman
There are places that I stay away from at all times unless I’m with friends or my girlfriend
you would never imagine any young gay or trans people live in a place like this but “we” are out here
Despite the safety risks and the lack of resources or gay and trans communities I could never live somewhere else
I hate cities and I love the slow way of life out here
I love being able to wander around for hours on the backroads and not see a single person
JM: It’s been three years since you released your last book At Night Gardens Grow
PG: It’s often hard for me to look at At Night Gardens Grow without feeling a sense of alienation
It’s almost as if I made that book in a past life
Within the few years that I was making that work my life was extremely chaotic: I was working for a union as a janitor
cleaning bathrooms for a college filled with jocks and rich exchange students
then soon after I was working around 50 hours a week as an elderly caregiver in a large mansion in the middle of the woods
I was getting home from work completely exhausted
then leaving the house to wander around and make these super time-consuming photographs in the middle of the night
I still look back at that time like “How the hell did I manage to do that?” The truth is I was very burnt out
avoiding facing my problems and not really taking care of myself
This is very apparent when I look at that book; trying to escape pain by finding beauty and wonder in my surroundings
Flowers Drink the River is coming more from a place of self-love and respect
The hardships are still there but it’s not the driving force to me wanting to find beauty in my life
JM: Your work almost exclusively takes place at night
PG: I’ve felt the safest at night for most of my life
The reasons for that have changed over the years but one constant has been a fear of people
In the countryside people go to bed – or at least stay inside – and lock their doors when it gets dark
Since transitioning the night has given me a new sense of sanctuary and freedom
I don’t typically have to worry about hauling a large camera around in strange locations and setting up for a few hours
If I were out during the day in the fields
I would certainly be questioned or harassed or chased away
country gays and “redneck shit” – minus the ugly bigotry
racism and hatred that most city and suburban people would associate with that term
JM: Looking at your photographs I am struck by the delicacy and patience with which you must work
Are you drawn to subjects which are fragile or require slowness
PG: I am in awe of the small things on this land
all things that can so easily be lost if I’m not careful
Patience and care have been a practice in both my personal life and in my art
I love working with fragile things that can fall apart or fly away at any moment
It forces me to really appreciate their presence and intricacy
JM: You are more present in this book than in At Night Gardens Grow
both in the photographs and how the work is narrativised
Are there parts of yourself implied in previous bodies of work which are more obvious or resolved here
PG: I think this is the first project I’ve worked on where I actually ever felt like myself while making the work
This work is more of an embrace of the things that I have in this life
While before I think I was latching onto things that weren’t a part of my life
or like holding onto things that weren’t serving me
I’ve always photographed people and things I am close to
but I think my intention was more questioning what was there rather than embracing
I am no longer trying to go outside of my comfort zone to make photographs
I want to only show the things that bring me joy and comfort in my life
PG: Euphoria is a recent feeling of “wow this is what it feels like to have a body that feels like my own” – I am no longer numb

Apr 9 (EFE).- Pakistan’s national flag carrier has recorded an operational profit of 9.3 billion rupees ($33.48 million) for the first time in 21 years amid government’s push for its privatization
The Pakistani government has offered to privatize Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and other state-owned enterprises as part of reforms sought by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under a $7 billion bailout program
a previous attempt to sell a 60 percent stake in the airline failed last year after it drew just one bid of 10 billion rupees ($36 million) which was well below the government’s expectation
“The PIA has posted an operating profit of Rs9.3 billion and net profit of Rs26.2 billion for the year 2024,” Abdullah Hafeez
a spokesman for the airline told EFE on Wednesday
confirmed the development saying the board of directors of PIA had approved the accounts for fiscal year 2024
“People of Pakistan might have lost hope on ‘once a pride of the nation’
but with rigorous steps adopted by the GoP (government of Pakistan); implementing comprehensive reforms entailing cost and workforce rationalization
routes optimization and financial discipline with balance sheet restructuring
PIA is poised to capitalize on financial performance through privatization process,” Asif
said that it was a major turnaround after decades of losses
the operational margin for 2024 exceeded 12 percent
a performance level that matches with top global carriers
the PIA has over 7,100 regular employees and around 2,500 daily wagers
The fleet of PIA aircraft is 33 but only 17 of them are operational at the moment
The airline’s total loss has crossed 800 billion rupees ($2.9 billion)
mainly because of more expenditures than revenue
PIA’s return to profitability could boost the government’s efforts to revive buyer interest
After the failed privatization process last year
the government has yet to reveal the new plan

The Pakistani government is proceeding with plans to privatise PIA - Pakistan International Airlines (PK, Islamabad International) and will launch a fresh expression-of-interest campaign by the end of April
a government adviser on privatisation told Reuters
the government has conceded that it will not have privatised the airline by the July 2025 deadline set down by the International Monetary Fund (IMF)
"In our last attempt to privatise PIA
pre-qualified bidders had some issues with taxation and the balance sheet
Those are taken care of now," Muhammad Ali told the news agency
A bid to privatise PIA in 2024 failed after the highly anticipated auction attracted a single bid that was well below the government's reserve price
While the government had removed the bulk of PIA's liabilities to a separate holding company
combined with a refusal to remove general sales tax from new aircraft purchases
but the government now admits that this timeline is unfeasible
The government now says the end of 2025 is a more likely date
The schedule for the yet-to-be-released expressions-of-interest campaign has potential buyers doing due diligence during July and a bid evaluation period running through September
the government is looking to sell between 51% and 100% of PIA and hand over management control of the carrier

Reelectionist Senator Pia Cayetano has praised Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia for leading her province with conviction
and bearing the weight of responsibility,” said Cayetano in a Facebook post
“As one of the few women in our country holding high elected office
Governor Gwen Garcia has shown what it means to lead with conviction,” she added
Cayetano said Garcia’s “long-standing service in Cebu speaks for itself— marked by consistency
and a deep understanding of her people’s needs.”
and Governor Gwen showed up when the province and her constituents needed her most,” she said
I hope the process remains fair and impartial— because leaders
who step up in difficult times should be given a fair chance to be heard,” Cayetano added
Garcia was suspended by the Office of the Ombudsman for six months without pay for issuing a special quarry permit to a construction company without requiring an environmental compliance certificate and other documents
Garcia stressed that the issuance of the special permit was above board and borne out of necessity to quickly address a looming water crisis

Pakistan is expected to trigger a new expressions of interest campaign for the acquisition of a majority stake in PIA - Pakistan International Airlines (PK, Islamabad International)
It will be in the second time in less than 12 months that the government has attempted to sell off the carrier
Islamabad's The News International newspaper reports on a briefing given by Privatisation Committee secretary Usman Bajwa on February 3 to the National Assembly Standing Committee on Privatisation
was "fully prepared" for another attempt to sell PIA
A previous October 2024 auction flopped after it attracted just one PKR10 billion rupee (USD36 million) bid, well below the PKR85 billion (USD305 million) reserve price. While the government has shunted most of PIA's not inconsiderable debts to a newly established holding company
approximately PKR45 billion (USD161 million) in debts remain on PIA's balance sheet
that remaining debt was identified as a significant deterrent to would-be buyers
The government "now plans to devise a mechanism" to remove the liabilities from the books
saying this will make PIA a more saleable proposition
The GST exemption will also be available to every Pakistani airline operator after PIA's privatisation. The government argues this will help private airlines update their aircraft and grow their business.

Pia’s honesty and authenticity shine as brightly as her imagery. Her reflections on identity, community, and the transformative power of art are a testament to her singular voice in contemporary photography. It is a privilege to share her story—a story that not only reveals the resilience of the human spirit but also reminds us of the magic and meaning waiting to be found in the everyday.
AG. "Flowers Drink the River" documents the first two years of your gender transition. How has this personal journey influenced your artistic vision and the themes you explore in your work?
AG: What drew you to photography as your primary mode of artistic expression? Were there specific moments or experiences that solidified your choice?
PPG: I was drawn to the immediacy of using a camera when I was in my early twenties shooting demolition derbies and the local county fairs. I wanted to be in chaotic situations and just like running around wild with a small point-and-shoot. Things have changed a lot. I can’t say that I have much immediacy in my practice anymore as all of my processes are extremely slow and patient.
AG: Are there particular photographers, artists, or movements that have deeply influenced your approach? How do these influences manifest in your work?
PPG: Imogen Cunningham, a lot of the early pictorialist photography, and recently I’ve been obsessed with Tee Corrinne after seeing the new book that Charlotte Flint edited called A Forest Fire Between Us. It’s really beautiful work centered around lesbian community gatherings in the 70’s and 80’s. Such a beautiful testament to queer joy and togetherness.
I resonate with artists that photograph their own communities that they belong to, and people that love and trust them.
AG: Your creative process involves staging sculptures with natural materials and allowing environmental factors to interact with them. Could you elaborate on how this collaborative approach with nature informs the narratives within your photography?
AG: Living as a trans woman in a small right-wing town presents unique challenges. How does your work address the complexities of seeking beauty and safety in an environment that may be at odds with your identity?
AG: Your photographs often feature nocturnal animals, ethereal landscapes, and ritualistic scenes. What symbolic meanings do these elements hold, and how do they contribute to the overarching narrative of your project?
AG: Working with large format film cameras can be demanding. What motivated you to choose this medium, and how does it align with the themes and aesthetics of "Flowers Drink the River"?
AG: Your process often involves intricate preparation, like building trust with animals or setting up delicate sculptures. How do these acts of patience shape your relationship with photography and the stories you tell?
PPG: It allows for a deeper connection with my surroundings. So many of my interactions with the world go way beyond just taking a photograph and It’s always important for me to build a connection with something, to communicate, or interact with a thing before making a photograph.
AG: Large format photography is celebrated for its precision but can be daunting to master. How do you balance the technical demands of the medium with the emotional and mystical qualities you aim to evoke in your images?
AG: You've mentioned that your work is about harnessing beauty as a form of resistance to a world full of terrors. Can you discuss how aesthetic choices in your photography serve as acts of defiance or empowerment?
AG: "Flowers Drink the River" includes portraits of your trans and queer friends, lovers, and chosen family. How do these relationships influence your work, and what message do you hope to convey about queer communities in rural settings?
I got closer to a lot of new friends/family, and formed really important bonds that gave me hope throughout this journey. Some of those people are within the pages of this book, though not all of them (something I want to do for my next book). All of the fuel I get to keep making art is because of the loved ones in my life that inspire me through their art, through their love, and through the time that we get to be together.
AG: Your work attempts to show an alternative to the masculine and extractive history of the medium. In what ways do you seek to redefine or challenge traditional narratives within photography?
AG: How does your background as a working-class individual from rural Maine shape your perspective and the stories you choose to tell through your art?
AG: You employ careful analogue techniques in your photography. What significance do these methods hold for you, and how do they enhance the emotive quality of your images?
AG: How has your approach to photography evolved over the years, especially during the creation of "Flowers Drink the River"? Are there any techniques or practices you’ve discovered that have surprised you?
AG: Following the release of "Flowers Drink the River," what themes or projects do you envision exploring next in your artistic journey?
PPG: I want to photograph more of my friends this year. I am working on a series of expired polaroid 4x5’s that uses bioluminescent powder. I have been making a lot of photographs of the moon and stars using homemade lens filters. I am also working on a book with my girlfriend that is made up of over 10 years of collected, archival material that we have together, and individually collected from local abandoned houses, flea markets, and yard sales.

PIA - Pakistan International Airlines (PK, Islamabad International) will lose a valuable stream of hard currency after New York Mayor Eric Adams said the city will close its asylum arrival centre and emergency relief shelter at the PIA-owned Roosevelt Hotel
The three-year deal was worth USD220 million to the airline
which regularly experiences hard currency shortages
New York City signed the deal in May 2023
when it was receiving 4,000 immigrants per week
The city processed around 75% of those within the hotel
Adams said on X this week that the facility would close within "the coming months." PIA has owned the hotel since 2005
Figures associated with the Trump administration have recently criticised using US taxpayer funds to house asylum seekers
State-owned PIA owns the hotel through a holding company, PIA Investment Limited. For years, including while the deal with New York City was ongoing, there have been on-again, off-again talks about selling or redeveloping the Roosevelt Hotel
Pakistan's then-caretaker government signed a USD7.8 million agreement with a US consortium led by Jones Lang LaSalle Americas to assist with developing or selling the site
the government was working on a privatisation plan for PIA and other state-owned entities
is continuing the pro-privatisation push promoted by previous administrations
and despite the skills and resources Jones Lang LaSalle brings to the table
the Roosevelt Hotel has failed to sell or lock in a redevelopment partner

Your one-stop-shop for ab blocking and malware busting
There’s plenty of tough competition in the VPN space for privacy-focused VPNs
but PIA’s combination of real-world tested privacy policies and outstanding security tools ensures it continues to distinguish itself from the rest of the pack
We’re taking a look at just one of these advanced features today – its built-in ad blocker called MACE
and malware in their tracks thanks to a DNS-level blocklist
You might wonder why an ad blocker like MACE is necessary when browser-based ad blockers already exist
MACE provides an extra layer of defense while taking the strain off your machine and your bandwidth
making it the perfect complement to an existing personal device security setup
Read on and I’ll explore MACE in detail: how it works
Its no-logs policy has been audited several times and tested in court not once
MACE is great for keeping ads off your system
MACE is Private Internet Access’s integrated ad, tracker, and malware blocker. Unlike browser-based ad blockers
which rely on scripts running in your browser to filter content
this means that it identifies and blocks requests to known malicious URLs
This ensures that unwanted content is blocked before it ever has a chance to reach your device
Personalized ads are more than just eerie – they can be downright privacy nightmares. Here's everything you need to know about targeted ads
you’re also cutting out a lot of behind-the-scenes tracking that those ads use to record your behavior across multiple sites
There’s the added benefit of blocking known malware distribution sites
The MACE feature actually violates their rule about apps not interfering with other apps by blocking ads across the entirety of the device
PIA continues to host a version of its Android client app on the PIA website which comes with MACE enabled
You’ll have to sideload the APK to get it working
which requires messing around with a few settings on your Android device
but it’s better than not having access to MACE at all
To understand how MACE works, you need to know some of the basics of DNS. When you type a URL into your browser, it needs to be translated into an IP address so that a connection can be established with the web server
If your device doesn’t already know the IP
it queries a DNS server to find the corresponding IP address
Domain Name System servers contain a list of IP address associations with domain names
these servers are the equivalent of the internet’s address book
you’re either connected to your ISP’s DNS servers by default or a large DNS provider like Google or Cloudflare
your DNS requests are all directed through one of PIA’s private and encrypted DNS servers instead
but for MACE the key one is that every DNS request you make passes through a regularly updated blocklist which checks for known ad networks or malware providers
MACE isn’t a comprehensive malware solution on its own and can’t replace an anti-virus engine
If the URL matches an entry in the blocklist
MACE returns a non-routable IP address instead of the true IP address of the domain
This ensures that all the requests to that domain go nowhere
There are also issues we’ve found in practice with how quickly MACE is updated. It’s not a dynamic, heuristics-based system in the same way that NordVPN’s malware-blocking solutions are
This means that newly created malicious domains are more likely to slip past MACE
When we put this to the test for ourselves
we found that MACE blocked only two out of 100 fresh phishing URLs provided by OpenPhish
We aren’t particularly surprised by these findings
but it’s important to remember that MACE isn’t a comprehensive malware solution on its own
It can’t replace an anti-virus engine
as MACE won’t highlight any malware that’s transferred through methods like email
there are very few downsides to implementing it into your security setup alongside other ad-blocking tools
Here’s why you want to keep MACE turned on:
Actually enabling MACE is a pretty straightforward process:
You can also access the MACE setting by clicking the extended drop-down button at the bottom of the client app
scrolling down to the “quick settings” panel
and clicking the stop-sign icon which represents MACE
You will still have to reconnect for it to take effect

'Todd has played a pivotal role in driving growth
and operational excellence during his time at the company,' according to Pia
Pia CEO Gerwai Todd has resigned after about a year with the help desk automation platform provider
which will operate under its CEO executive group
Todd will continue to serve as CEO of Tampa
a scheduling automation tool provider for MSPs that he co-founded in 2020
“Todd has played a pivotal role in driving growth
and operational excellence during his time at the company,” according to Pia

Todd told CRN in a LinkedIn message that “the team is doing great work...
I’m confident they are in a place where they can continue to build on the success of 2024.”
He confirmed his departure in a public LinkedIn post Friday
saying that “leading two companies is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my career,” comparable to “having two families
in different houses and different countries.”
Todd said that he took the Pia job knowing he’d have to fully leave TimeZest
removing myself from a company I was part of founding was a more complicated and longer journey than I anticipated.”
Pia’s founding CEO) and my Pia work family,” Todd wrote
We did a lot of great work in 2024 and I’m confident the team is setup for more success in 2025
The Pia team is reinventing how an MSP will operate a service desk in the future.”
the CEO said “we’ve got a tremendous opportunity in front of us in 2025 to continue to eliminate scheduling ping pong.”
The CEO’s departure comes about seven months after Pia channel chief Tim Coach left the vendor
Pia said that Todd stepped down effective immediately and that the “parties have agreed it was time for Pia to pursue a dedicated full-time CEO to better meet the needs of the company’s growing customer base” since Todd was sharing his time with Pia and TimeZest
Pia thanked Todd for overseeing the vendor’s alignment “around an ambitious roadmap” and the launch of the AITriage help desk ticket offering
Todd also grew the company’s customer base
and “led the ushering in of new pricing models to help more MSPs embrace Pia’s capabilities.”
Along with operating under the CEO executive group
Pia will establish a growth advisory committee that will “guide the company’s future direction and maintain continuity as it conducts a comprehensive
global search for its next leader,” according to the vendor
The vendor’s website shows no executive with the CEO title and with executives including Chief Technology Officer Aron Hardy-Bardsley
Chief Information and Security Officer (CISO) Terry Irons and Chief Financial Officer David Apolo retaining their titles
According to CRN’s 2024 Channel Chiefs, Pia has been working to “add more qualified partners” and “increase overall percentage of company revenue that comes through the channel.”

AI-led help desk automation platform for managed service providers (MSPs) Pia has announced that Gerwai Todd will be stepping down as CEO
Pia will now pursue a full-time CEO to meet its business needs
who served as the CEO of both Pia and TimeZest simultaneously
The help desk automation platform will operate under its CEO Executive Group while establishing a Growth Advisory Committee to guide Pia’s future direction and maintain continuity as it conducts its CEO search
Todd oversaw the alignment of Pia around a roadmap that included AITriage
which reduces the time MSPs spend manually processing help desk tickets
Todd also ushered in new pricing to assist MSPs in embracing Pia’s capabilities and helped grow the company’s customer base
Todd oversaw a recent integration of the two companies to assist MSPs with cutting down ticket resolution time and eliminating scheduling hassles
The integration allows MSPs to seamlessly schedule and manage meetings between technicians and end users directly within the ticketing workflow
accelerating ticket resolution and improving operational efficiency
“This integration makes life easier for technicians and helps them close tickets faster than ever,” Todd said when the integration was announced
“By eliminating unnecessary steps and making scheduling more intuitive
technicians can focus on resolving the most important issues quickly
This streamlining ultimately improves service quality and client satisfaction.”
Pia has grown consistently as they help organizations automate their help desk processes with the power of AI
Through its aiDesk solution
Pia has helped companies with an AI-first approach to boost efficiency through process optimization
and frees up time for MSPs to focus on other areas of their business
as well as commit more resources to ensure that they’re meeting client needs
Pia also recently introduced a new integration gateway feature in a platform release that allows partners to effectively integrate with any tool within their stack that they can gain API access to– which helps partners integrate seamlessly into the Pia platform
Further, Pia has added new AI-driven tools to its help desk automation platform in mid-December
which helps reduce the time MSPs spend manually processing help desk tickets
“MSPs often struggle with repetitive tasks that take attention from high-priority issues,” Todd said
“By automating the categorization and initial response to help desk tickets
AutoTriage and AutoStart free up technicians to focus on more critical tasks
improving both the speed and quality of service.”

I worked with many people with different backgrounds
and I love learning about their cultures."
I am from Northern Germany and am part of the “Taste The Future – Junior Management Program” at Mondelēz International
I am working in Manufacturing & Supply Chain (MSC) Finance for the three chocolate plants in the Germany
I started in our business office in Bremen before moving to the south of Germany to work in the Milka chocolate plant in Lörrach
including our Milka plant in Bludenz and Toblerone plant in Bern
as the plants are within commuting distance of each other
How did you join the Taste The Future – Junior Management Program
I studied Business Administration at the University of Bremen
This is where my career at MDLZ started – I was an Accounting & External Reporting intern
so it was an obvious decision to apply for the Taste The Future – Junior Management Program after I finished my studies
How has the program supported your career development
The program gives you exposure and the responsibility to lead your career
It also gives you rotation into 2-3 new roles tailored to your skills and development needs
to drive my career in the right direction and make sure I was aware of all the options there are within the company
What aspects of the company have you found most supportive or challenging
so you need to step out of your comfort zone from time to time
Development and change always come with obstacles
and each colleague I worked with has always been very supportive
It also helps to take full advantage of any mentorship and actively seek opportunities to network within your new environment
Building a strong connection with your mentor can provide essential guidance
especially when navigating a new business unit or location
Be proactive in meeting colleagues from different areas and roles—each connection enriches your understanding of the operation
How did you adapt to the cultural differences
I would say the cultural difference in location is not that big
working with many people from different backgrounds in the plant
I learned about some of their traditions and tried new meals they brought from home and many more
This experience helped me understand my colleagues' diverse perspectives and made me value everyone's diversity and uniqueness more
What advice would you give to others in the transition situation
My advice is to keep an open mind and be ready to learn from your new role and the people around you

A staunch advocate for the innocent and the organization
Cohler has helped revolutionize the processing of the thousands of requests for assistance received by the Innocence Project every year
2024) The Innocence Project today announced the election of attorney and philanthropist Pia Cohler to the organization’s Board of Directors
Cohler previously practiced corporate law with Skadden Arps
She subsequently dedicated herself to pro bono and philanthropic work in the criminal legal system
both in the United States and in the United Kingdom
Cohler has volunteered at the Innocence Project
undertaking comprehensive case reviews for the intake department
and vetting each letter the Innocence Project receives to determine if it will be able to provide legal assistance
At least one of the requests for representation reviewed by Ms
Cohler was accepted by the Innocence Project’s post-conviction litigation department
Ms Cohler made a significant gift to the Innocence Project
which allowed for investments in staff and technology that streamlined the intake department’s ability to process and respond to requests
“I have dreamed of working with the Innocence Project since I first heard about it as a young law student,” Ms
Cohler said.”It has been a privilege to work closely with the intake team
I look forward to deepening my commitment to protecting the freedom of the wrongly convicted as a board member of the Innocence Project.”
The Innocence Project receives an average of 2,000 requests for representation each year
and every letter is read and responded to by the intake and evaluation team
the intake team was able to significantly reduce the amount of time required to review and respond to these inquiries and identify viable wrongful conviction cases
Her support also allowed the team to hire its first investigations attorney
Some of the cases being evaluated are decades old
and the investigations attorney works to determine whether case evidence still exists or has been lost or destroyed by reaching out
to laboratories to see if they are still in possession of items that
This role also allowed the Innocence Project to completely revolutionize its work with law firms
The organization expanded its partnerships from two firms to 10 during the tenure of this position
and was able to develop a process for evaluating requests for representation from both individuals whose innocence can be proven by DNA testing as well as people whose convictions are based on false confessions
and other leading causes of wrongful conviction
”Pia has already made extraordinary contributions to the Innocence Project by dedicating her time to reviewing and analyzing requests for representation and providing resources to fill important gaps she observed through her work as a volunteer
This is exactly the kind of commitment and strategic vision that will make her a great board member,” said Christina Swarns
executive director of the Innocence Project
“We are honored to welcome Pia Cohler to the Innocence Project Board of Directors,” said Innocence Project Board Chair Jack Taylor
“She has demonstrated a strong commitment to our mission to free the wrongly convicted and prevent wrongful convictions from happening in her work with the intake department
We know she will have many more valuable contributions to the organization in the years to come.”
Pia will make an incredibly hard working board member with her deep commitment to The Innocence Project and its vital mission
