Texas Tech baseball infielder T.J. Pompey will miss the rest of the season with an injury
Tadlock generally refrains from divulging specifics of injuries
but Pompey hasn't played since March 30 at Kansas State
he was wearing a brace on his right wrist during the Tech-Cincinnati series
The news isn't a surprise. Tadlock said after the Red Raiders' victory Sunday against Baylor that Pompey was "not real close at all" to returning and could be out for the season
The sophomore from Coppell played in 18 games
four at shortstop and two designated hitter

The sophomore from Hutto is batting .256 with 2 homers and 10 RBI
Coleman Ryan has started 19 games at shortstop
The freshman from Tomball is batting .268 with no homers and 7 RBI
"I think the guys that have filled in have done good," Tadlock said
"I don't know that you're going to get the five or six home runs you've had (from Pompey)
They've done a good job of putting together quality at-bats
I don't know that you're going to do it OPS-wise
You're probably going to have to do it collectively through the lineup."

who both had disappointing injury-plagued seasons
the Sixers don’t appear to have many options due to Embiid and George having seemingly hard-to-trade contracts
“First off, I feel very good about that trade because it put us in a great spot,” Morey said of the 2020-21 season. “It was before coach [Nick Nurse] was here
but we were the one-seed going into the playoffs
that gives you a 40-50% chance to make the finals
So I feel good that we got good value out of that trade
Seth Curry was [acquired in] a different trade
Not only do the Sixers have a 63.9% chance of keeping their pick
they have 10.5% chance of winning the lottery
the Sixers will owe their 2026 first-rounder to OKC if it doesn’t fall in the top four picks
the pick will be top-four protected in 2027
the Thunder will get a 2027 second-rounder
But getting from underneath Horford’s massive contract was widely celebrated when the trade was agreed upon
Horford was a few months removed from a disappointing first season of the four-year

The Sixers acquired him to be the starting power forward and to back up Embiid at center
it became obvious that Horford was out of position at power forward
And not serving as a good fit with Embiid and Ben Simmons
The problem was that an annual base salary of $24.2 million was a lot of money for a reserve
That’s why the Sixers were willing to give OKC a first-rounder to take in Horford’s contract
Morey noted these types of trades are now happening with less frequency
“There is a sort of a shift in how firsts are sort of being held
They’re only traded in bigger trades when it’s someone like a Paul George who’s moving teams or something like that
“That’s one reason why we made a trade of a first and the four seconds because we wanted the ability to upgrade the team next season by having sort of a bigger set of assets and things like that.”
6 acquisition of Jared Butler and four second-round picks from the Washington Wizards in exchange for Reggie Jackson and a 2026 first-round pick
The Sixers will receive the more favorable 2027 second-round pick between the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns
They’ll also nab the Warriors’ 2028 second-rounder
and the more favorable pick in 2030 between the Suns and Portland Trail Blazers
The Sixers also reacquired their second-round pick and Quentin Grimes in a trade from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Caleb Martin and a 2030 second-round pick before February’s trade deadline
» READ MORE: Nick Nurse was never the problem this season. But he’ll need a healthy roster to prove it.
The pick the Sixers reacquired will be No. 35 on June 26, the second day of the draft.

Two wins over the Easter weekend secured Portsmouth's Championship survival
After Portsmouth's win over Blackburn a few weeks ago
I had a quick word with one of the coaching staff
I offered my congratulations and pointed out safety was now potentially just a couple of wins away
"I might be able to sleep at night then." I don't think they were joking
This is the pressure of a relegation battle
It's worth reflecting on what Portsmouth have achieved
Survival with two matches to go in a first season back in the Championship with one of the division's lowest budgets is
But throw in all the injuries and misfortune
and it is worth considering how it compares to winning League One last season
This was a side that were six points adrift of safety after 15 matches with just one win to their name
They looked short of goals and leaky at the back
Portsmouth have had to be a play-off-calibre team since then just to survive
Colby Bishop's earlier than expected return from heart surgery has obviously been key
but so has John Mousinho's decision to alter the playing style
He spent the whole of pre-season working with the players
Pompey had dominated possession in League One last season
But the decision to be more direct with the ball and press aggressively out of possession at times has paid dividends
The football hasn't always been easy on the eye
Colby Bishop is the club's top scorer with 11 Championship goals this season
Since early November only Leeds United can better Pompey's 11 home wins
in that period the Blues have never squandered a lead at home
going on to win every match that they went ahead in
Teams might have underestimated Pompey at home at the back end of 2024
but no one will have done so this calendar year
The results may not have improved significantly away from home
Pompey haven't lost a game by more than one goal since a weakened 11 were well beaten at West Brom in January
This after numerous games in the first half of the season did or could have ended in a hammering
Recruitment has also been key despite few mistakes
Josh Murphy is a strong contender for player of the season
Matt Ritchie and Andre Dozzell were very useful late-summer free agent additions
Nicolas Schmidt looks like a Championship-level goalkeeper
West Ham will be extremely pleased at Freddie Potts development
In January, Pompey needed players who could make an immediate impact. Despite the calf injury, Rob Atkinson was a brilliant addition
Isaac Hayden and Adil Aouchiche have all made contributions
Portsmouth may struggle again next season if they can't get their key players on the pitch on a more regular basis
We know other clubs have taken note of how good a job he's done
It is not out of the question that someone makes him an offer he cannot refuse
But he knows he's loved at Fratton Park
The owners would have stuck with him even if the club had been relegated
Taking Portsmouth to the Premier League in football's current climate would require a once-in-a-generation season where everything went perfectly
That might be realistically out of reach for now
but there's still scope for the club to move forward next season
Mousinho won't feel he's taken Portsmouth as far as he can just yet

Hughes named to D1Baseball Top-100 List February 24
The duo were included on the publications list of top-100 hitters from last weekend
LUBBOCK, Texas – Fresh a weekend that saw the Red Raiders hit seven home runs and score 28 runs, sophomores TJ Pompey and Logan Hughes were named to the D1Baseball Top-100 Hitters from this past week, the publication announced Monday.
Continuing where he left off after a strong offensive weekend at No. 6 North Carolina, Pompey went 6-for-13 with two home runs, six runs scored and six RBIs. Pompey scored twice in all three games and drove in at least one run in all three games.
After a 3-for-4 day with a double and a home run on Friday afternoon, Pompey went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base in Tech's 15-12 win over nationally-ranked UC Irvine.
On Sunday afternoon, Pompey also shined at the plate, as the righty homered and scored twice in the Red Raiders series finale against UC Irvine.
The Red Raiders other honoree, Hughes, also shined this weekend at the plate as well as in the field.
After a tough 0-for-4 on Friday afternoon, Hughes caught fire on Saturday and Sunday going a combined 4-for-8 in the final two games of the weekend with a pair of home runs and nine total RBIs.
In Saturday's win over the Anteaters, Hughes went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs, before added a pair of hits, a home run and five RBIs in the Red Raiders Sunday game against UCI.

Getty ImagesAs I write more than 24 hours on
the sickener on Wednesday night remains on my mind
Disappointment this season has been a regularity for Portsmouth fans and
is routinely something we have dealt with - but the manner in which devastation was handed to Pompey in this game will live long in the memory
Having been there and watched us lose every one of the 15 games in which we have succumbed to defeat on the road this season
that is the worst I have felt leaving an away end
Derby and Stoke all embarrassing in equal measure and unacceptably poor
You couldn't have asked for any more in terms of defensive performances from the likes of Regan Poole and Connor Ogilvie right up to 93-and-a-half minutes in
A characterisation of the cruel mistress that we call the Championship embodied in a heartbeat - make one mistake with 20 seconds on the clock and face the devastating consequences
I make it seven points that Pompey have let slip in time post the regulation 90 minutes this season
That leaves little consideration other than to think that it's a mentality issue
Too many times a lead or a point has been let slip with moments to spare
A green shoot from the congested Championship run-in is that attention turns very quickly to Saturday
Simply the biggest game for Pompey in many
Win it and the season is defined by a critical victory and only a handful of points will then be needed from the remaining subsequent games
Lose (or anything but win) and we will be left in nothing other than serious trouble
It's worth pointing out there have been moments this season in which the pressure has been very much on for John Mousinho's side to get a result when really needing it
My mind takes me back to the lead up to both the Cardiff and Stoke games this season where a seismic win was an absolute necessity
What is also noteworthy is that Pompey are the best positioned team at this juncture of any of the other sides desperate to avoid the drop
You would not want to swap either our run of games nor our league position with any other team within a handful of points below us
it is completely in our hands at Fratton Park
On many an occasion this team has delivered on home soil with the backing of some of the most vociferous support in the land
Hull City managed to survive relegation by the skin of their teeth away at Portsmouth
as a 1-1 draw saw the Tigers condemn Luton Town to the drop by goal difference
Rubén Sellés made two changes to the lineup from the defeat to Derby
bringing in Matt Crooks and João Pedro for Regan Slater and Nordin Amrabat
meaning City weren’t out for too long
forcing an early goalmouth scramble before Lewie Coyle had an effort saved behind
and Matt Crooks loses his marker to smash the ball home
Fratton Park’s away end explodes in joy
as Preston soon took the lead against Bristol
a result that City desperately want to not happen
City knew that it was now going to be a fight
and started to get more of a foothold in the game
with Callum Lang only being denied from a great chance by a brilliant challenge from McLoughlin
the Tigers had a great chance to double their lead when Joe Gelhardt managed to get through Pompey’s defence and take aim
only for a block from Atkinson to deny him
as Luton quickly went 3-1 down at the Hawthorns
and Portsmouth came out swinging – with Pandur forced to save a deflected Potts effort
with Pedro having an effort of his own following a great Gelhardt run
The home side went into the half time break looking a little more dangerous than earlier in the half
but City’s defence in the first 45 had been near perfect
and found themselves in a golden position in the relegation fight
But there were still another 45 minutes to go
and Portsmouth came out swinging – with Pandur forced to save a deflected Potts effort
But City didn’t respond effectively enough
and it puts them down to 21st… squeaky bum time indeed
West Brom going 5-1 up on Luton means City just needed the draw now
and the Tigers’ season was now all on them
Burstow for Joseph and Palmer for Gelhardt
and Portsmouth’s momentum was rising rapidly
The status of City was on the most precarious of knife edges
as Jones replaced Pedro and City went to hold on to what they had
The breaks in play as the second half went on allowed Portsmouth’s momentum to die out somewhat
and City were able to slow the game down and make it as defensive and scrappy as possible
City nearly scored late on when Egan’s header from a corner was superbly saved before Burstow couldn’t connect
A head injury to Crooks caused a delay in the game
seven loooooooooooooooong minutes were added
The post-mortem of a torrid season will come in the weeks ahead
and City’s future under the current ownership and all of the apparent financial troubles
there are still no assurances ahead of next season
We need clarity from the owner and we need it soon
it’ll be another season of fighting for survival
City have done what they needed to do when it mattered most
And while they had to do it the hard way… isn’t that the only way for our Tigers

The defender has signed a four-year deal and will play alongside Australian striker Kusini Yengi
left-back Jacob Farrell and attacker Thomas Waddingham
who signed with Pompey from Brisbane Roar last week
Waddingham scored on his debut in a 5-1 loss to West Bromwich Albion last weekend that leaves Portsmouth just one place clear of the Championship drop zone

Getty ImagesMy feeling is very much that yesterday's win at Norwich City will be noted down as 'the moment' that clinched Portsmouth's goal of survival this season
Just like Kusini Yengi's late winner at Peterborough United in the previous title-winning campaign - whilst not beyond numerical certainty at the time - is fondly reflected on as when we knew we'd done it
Pompey are very much the talk of the Championship at the start of this extended footballing weekend
Colby Bishop's first professional career hat-trick, Josh Murphy breaking Opta records for assists in a single season
and Regan Poole became a second-tier goalscorer
The completely bonkers affair usurped a Pompey convention on the road - we've been in games
but repeatedly have been undone by a single goal of late
Whilst there are similarities to draw in terms of the frenetic nature of some of these away games - none of them have seen us exert such goal-scoring prowess as we did in East Anglia yesterday afternoon
I felt particularly at the break [1-3 for those keeping count]
that we'd had almost everything you could ask for from a Pompey performance on the road
but show the character and the guile to look beyond that and continue to play our game
How many times has conceding away from home completely killed any level of performance or momentum in a game for us this season
Freddie Potts had a wonderful afternoon - considering Norwich's reluctance to tackle it made his display an absolute joy to watch
Some of the football he orchestrated from the middle of the park was sublime
It was also Adil Aouchiche's best performance in a Pompey shirt
He's shown a real tenacity and desire since arriving in January
so it's great to see that translate into tangible returns in terms of assists
Murphy needs little discussion or description - it's almost as if sometimes when he's running at pace with the ball
his feet don't actually look like they're touching the ground
Of all English players across the Premier League and Championship
only Cole Palmer (22) has more goal involvements than Pompey's magic man (20) on the left wing
Speaking of magic men - a last word on Bishop
Missing a penalty in a massive moment not six days before
the call comes for him to take another one is an almost obscene mental battle - yet as he stood over the spot-kick facing the River End
I had absolutely no doubt that he was going to bury it
Having been out for three months of the season following heart surgery
to score 10 Championship goals since November
including a hat-trick yesterday to put Pompey six points clear of the drop zone with three games to play - there's very little that will top that as a story this season
I've been in every single Pompey away end this season
and it may well come as no surprise to you to say it was the loudest I have heard us on our travels
The full-time air was full of a genuine optimism for just short of 2,000 travelling fans that Pompey will retain their Championship status for at least another year
Fingers crossed it won't be long before that all-important numerical certainty
John Mousinho won the League One title with Portsmouth last season
Portsmouth are planning talks with out-of-contract players next week
Boss John Mousinho says he will not tell players of any decisions about their futures until after Saturday's final Championship game of the season at home to Hull City (12:30 BST)
"We've had a couple of meetings this week with players who are in contract but we didn't want to distract any of the out-of-contract players because it's unfair before the weekend," Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent.
"Any conversations we've had this week have been very straightforward and any of the ones which take more care and diligence we'll do on Monday."
Defenders Zak Swanson and Cohen Bramall are two of the first-team players whose deals are due to expire at the end of the season
although Pompey do retain an option to extend Swanson's contract
Mousinho admits they have not made final decisions on everyone's future
"We're still mulling over a few things and we have a couple of meetings on Friday with the board where we want to check things first before we make any decisions," he added
"The conversations where you're letting players go aren't great but there's a lot of reward when you give a new contract but ultimately they're not nice conversations a lot of the time because you're talking about people's livelihoods so you have to tread carefully."

draining all five shots compared to Bishop Ludden’s three to secure the victory
The teams traded goals in the first half, heading into halftime tied at 1-1. Jayden Kwasniewski netted the lone goal of the half for Fabius-Pompey
Neither team appeared to have a significant edge over their opponent
Bishop Ludden did not hesitate to strike early in the second half
The Gaelic Knights executed a play to perfection in order to take a 2-1 lead
Fabius-Pompey’s offensive unit struggled throughout the second half to find quality looks at the net
With less than a minute remaining in regulation, the Falcons finally broke through Bishop Ludden’s stout defense. Kyle Clarkson delivered a pinpoint pass to set up Gavin Campbell for the tying score
The first overtime period saw neither team manage to distinguish themselves
with both finishing scoreless to send the contest into a shootout
Both Fabius-Pompey and Bishop Ludden netted their first three penalty kicks. The Falcons drained their fourth shot, but Fabius-Pompey goalkeeper Brady Neuner came up with a clutch save on the Gaelic Knights' attempt at an equalizer
Kwasniewski sealed the deal by sending the ball into the back of the net for the dagger
“Our boys just didn’t give up,” Fabius-Pompey head coach Matt Neuner said
“With this group of seniors that I currently have
many of them had been on the two previous sectional championship teams
Fabius-Pompey’s defense stepped up after a few early slip-ups. Goalkeeper Trevor Barnum played a key role

“It’s incredible that we’re seeing this matchup two times in a row,” Neuner said
with the two schools being just seven miles apart
It’s really a testament to the program that Coach Donald has built and the program that we have
These are always classics when we go up against each other.”

The Fabius-Pompey boys soccer team edged Westmoreland/Oriskany
in a penalty kick shootout on Friday in the Class C quarterfinals.dennis nett | dnett@syracuse.com
.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Kevin L. Smith | ksmith@syracuse.comThe Fabius-Pompey and Westmoreland/Oriskany boys soccer squads were in a tight Class C quarterfinal defensive battle on Friday night
The contest saw each of the team’s defenders build brick walls
so much so that the matchup reached a second overtime
About 14 minutes into the second half, Alex Wilcox went down with an injury
It led to the senior being taken to the hospital for precautionary measures
The injury timeout created a bit of a lull in the action
but the Falcons were determined to finish strong for Wilcox
After a scoreless regulation and two OT periods
fourth-seeded Fabius-Pompey went on to defeat the fifth-seeded Bulldogs in a penalty kick shootout
Fabius-Pompey coach Matt Neuner said he was texting Wilcox back and forth after the game
“Alex’s injury willed us much more to win for him
especially from his fellow seniors,” Neuner said
Heading into the shootout, Trevor Barnum came out of goal and passed the baton to Brady Neuner
Barnum finished with eight saves on the night
The Falcons and the Bulldogs were knotted at two apiece in PKs
Westmoreland/Oriskany’s next two shots were an errant attempt off the crossbar and a clutch save by Brady Neuner
After Quinlan Yard scored to make it 3-2 Falcons, Colin Gleason capped a long Friday evening for the team with the game-clinching shot
“We practice PKs just in case we run into situations like tonight,” Coach Neuner said
“We’ve had our fair share of games in the past end this way
we knew we had a strong group of five shooters to get the job done.”
Neuner noted that when teams re-entered the field following Wilcox’s injury timeout
“It was such an amazing defensive effort on both sides
It was appropriate the game went to PKs because no one could get (a shot) past the goalies.”
The delay on Friday turned out to be an advantage for the Falcons
the lights went out at Fabius-Pompey’s field and the game was delayed for over an hour
“I’m especially happy for my seniors because it’s the last time they’ll play on that field
We got that big win and now we move on,” Neuner said

Portsmouth's Colby Bishop has now scored 10 goals this season
Colby Bishop's hat-trick helped Portsmouth to a crucial victory Norwich in an eight-goal thriller at Carrow Road
Their second win in 17 Championship away games opens up a six-point gap to the relegation zone
while ending Norwich's play-off hopes
Matt Ritchie and Regan Poole completed the rout
Jack Stacey and Emiliano Marcondes scoring for the Canaries
The home side are now 13 points adrift of sixth with three games to play
Jordan Williams cut in on his left to whip in a deep cross
smashing home after a corner was cleared into his path
and Norwich almost went in front 10 minutes before half time
Kellen Fisher headed goalwards from Oscar Shwartau's cross
but Pompey keeper Nicolas Schmid saved with his feet
Ritchie finished off a wonderful team goal for the visitors moments later as Josh Murphy reached the byline after a searching ball from Isaac Hayden
before crossing for the 35-year-old to tap home unmarked
Bishop scored his second from a stoppage time penalty after Hayden was fouled in the box
and they picked up where they left off after the break
Murphy shot from a tight angle before feeding the striker
who finished after George Long's initial save
Stacey pulled one back for Norwich with a brilliant finish into the top corner after being fed by Jacob Wright's pinpoint through ball
But Pompey restored their three-goal advantage through Poole's sweeping finish from Adil Aouchiche's cross
Marcondes added Norwich's third late on but it was too late to avoid a fourth straight game without a win
Norwich manager Johannes Hoff Thorup speaking to BBC Radio Norfolk:
There were many things defensively we didn't get right
"It comes down to preparation and being ready for what your opponent brings to a game and we didn't match that at all
"I had the feeling that every time they brought the ball forward it could be a chance or a goal against
"We have to look at that; it is definitely a weakness
It is simple situations we struggle to deal with
"I hate when you have to talk about desire in a football player but I think there was a difference in that today
Portsmouth had more at stake and was willing to throw their bodies in front of the ball
"I don't think we matched them and that was one of the messages at half time
It seemed like the simple things were difficult today."
Portsmouth manager John Mousinho speaking to BBC Radio Solent:
It was quite a stressful 90 minutes for me
"Even at 5-2 up with eight minutes to go
probably because of the position we are in
I'll be more pleased but we've got to go again tomorrow and make sure we are focussed again for Monday
"We spoke before about putting it all together
We've done it in patches in games but not consistent enough
We do deserve to be in the Championship and we've mixed it with every team here
"The next stage is making sure we do it more often."

Harvey Blair (centre) joined Portsmouth from Liverpool in August
Harvey Blair's first season with Portsmouth has been like "a rollercoaster" according to the former Liverpool winger
The 21-year-old made the switch from Merseyside to the South Coast last summer but has found first-team appearances hard to come by before scoring his first Pompey goal in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday.
"I just wanted to go out and have fun really and the goal came with it," Blair told BBC Radio Solent.
"Josh Murphy said to me before the game 'every time I get the ball just get in the box' so I knew that and luckily it was a nice little tap-in."
Blair had to wait until October's trip to Stoke for his first start in a Portsmouth shirt and that ended in a 6-1 hammering.
Since then he has only featured a further five times with the draw at Hillsborough his second appearance in the starting line-up
"It's been a rollercoaster season for me but I just need to keep my head down
keep working hard and make sure next season I'm firing on all cylinders," he added
"All the lads have been unbelievable since the day I came in
welcomed me with open arms and I couldn't ask for any more."
Portsmouth safeguarded their Championship status with a win over Watford on Easter Monday and finish their campaign at home to relegation-threatened Hull City on Saturday (12:30 BST)
Rob Atkinson scored twice and an own-goal as the Blues drew with Derby County
It makes a nice change for a last-minute goal to go in Pompey's favour
This game was everything you would have expected - [it was] tense
Once Colby Bishop missed an early penalty there was very little between the sides
All the focus will be on Rob Atkinson's contributions at both ends of the pitch
Portsmouth look a better defensive unit with him in
had he stayed fit it's hard to imagine they would still be in the relegation picture
John Mousinho was rightly frustrated with the way Pompey conceded the goals
there have been too many sloppy ones in recent weeks
Pompey are crawling towards safety but four points from their final four games may well be enough
Rex FeaturesYesterday John Mousinho cemented himself as my favourite Pompey manager in living memory
His back-to-back triumphs of promotion from League One with a handful of games to spare
with some of the biggest challenges imaginable thrown at him
I would argue that survival in the Championship for Pompey is just as big
than the title-winning success last season
I'd point to the luckless injury run which has seemingly plagued the campaign
some of the run of games and fixture list (or lack thereof given postponements!) and a number of officiating calls to our detriment as some of the salient undertones to a turbulent first season in the second tier in over a decade
It feels fitting that Colby Bishop was ultimately the man to provide the goal that retained Pompey's divisional status for at least another season - a player whose contributions since his timely return in November have played a critical role in the survival effort
During the second half against Watford the pressure of what was at stake wore on our faces - the longer the lead remained at a slender 1-0
Watford demonstrated a real elegance on the ball and looked capable of hurting Pompey at any given moment - yet it was only really a world-class tip onto the crossbar from Nicolas Schmid that properly moved him all afternoon
The 10 minutes of stoppage time seemed never ending before Sam Allison blew the all-important full-time whistle
Pompey now have two games to bask in their glory
full in the knowledge that they will be competing at this level for at least another season
Post-match comments from both Mousinho and Regan Poole regarding "finishing strong" will chime well with supporters - there's a very plausible argument to be made that when all is said and done
Pompey's ultimate final league position could look incredibly comfortable
Rex FeaturesWhen Portsmouth stunned Leeds in early March to move 10 points clear of the bottom three
One win in six since then has dragged the Blues back into the relegation battle
The performances haven't been bad but they have developed a nasty habit of conceding late goals
especially away from home where they've lost 12 of the past 13 matches
it will be almost entirely down to their results at Fratton Park
Injuries have been a problem but Rob Atkinson returned last weekend
Conor Shaughnessy is close to a return and top scorer Callum Lang hasn't given up on playing again this season
It's hard to imagine Portsmouth would be in any danger if those three had stayed fit
One win from four might be enough to stay up from here
two would definitely do it and the fixture list is kinder than some other relegation rivals
Back in November when Pompey were rooted to the bottom of the table
they would have bitten your arm off to be in this position
A few struggles and some unfortunate results have led to a couple of jitters but the Blues should have enough to see the job through
The sole objective all season has been staying up - 21st or higher marks a good first season back in the second tier for 12 years

Ex-Pompey loanee Abu Kamara is also likely to feature
Rob Atkinson's goals against Derby County were his first for Portsmouth
Rob Atkinson scored both of Portsmouth's goals on the way to netting an unwanted hat-trick as Pompey claimed a draw with relegation rivals Derby County at Fratton Park
The central defender grabbed the stoppage-time equaliser having earlier cancelled out Jerry Yates' opener for the Rams
That first goal on his return from injury was then quickly followed up by an own goal
which had appeared to have the visitors on course for a crucial victory in their battle to avoid the drop
he met a searching long ball from goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid to make it 2-2 in the 91st minute
It was a thrilling finish to an already entertaining game which started with Derby goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom saving Colby Bishop's penalty kick after conceding the spot-kick himself by bringing down Matt Ritchie
Derby's Marcus Harness went closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half with an effort that came off the woodwork
and the Rams eventually had to settle for a share of the points that keeps them one place above the drop zone
Late Stoke winner leaves Cardiff deep in relegation mire
Luton lose to 10-man Blackburn to deepen troubles
Cardiff City's defeat by Stoke City means Derby move one point clear of the bottom three
while Portsmouth are a further three points ahead in 19th spot with four matches remaining
The return of Bristol City loanee Atkinson to Portsmouth's starting line-up after seven games out with a calf injury was one of five changes John Mousinho made after the midweek defeat at Coventry City
After a last-gasp goal cost them against the Sky Blues
Portsmouth went looking for a fast start in this relegation scrap
But despite Bishop stepping up for an early penalty
Zetterstrom made amends for conceding the spot-kick with a foul on Matt Ritchie by making a crucial save in the game of high stakes
Derby's goalkeeper went on to make another decisive first-half save
keeping Christian Saydee out after the striker weaved his way through the Rams' backline
Derby had two chances to open the scoring themselves
Craig Forsyth blazed an effort over from seven yards
before a cross-come-shot from Harness hit both the underside of the crossbar and inside of the post against his former side
A headed clearance from Regan Poole denied Derby's Ebou Adams from breaking the deadlock with a first-time effort in first-half stoppage time
while Pompey goalkeeper Schmid tipped a looped header from Forsyth over the bar after the interval
during which Atkinson found the back of the net at both ends after Yates broke the deadlock with a header
had Derby closing in on what would have been only their third win on the road this season
But Atkinson's second headed goal of the afternoon – with his own goal coming off his boot when trying to deal with a Kayden Jackson cross – sent Fratton Park into a frenzy
Portsmouth boss John Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent:
it was a big game for us but the most important thing was to not lose the game
"So when you go through what we went though today
then shooting ourselves in the foot conceding the goals at really poor times
"Rob [Atkinson] is a player who has two years' worth of bad injuries at Bristol City
and he came in in January and we managed him back into the fold and he unfortunately got that calf injury against QPR [in February]
"But there aren't many players with five games left on their loan risking what Rob risked today
He will go back to Bristol City after his loan
but he came in and he played like he had a four-year contract at Portsmouth
and I'm really pleased we have characters in the dressing room like that
he was pencilled in for 60 minutes and we got beyond that
Derby County head coach John Eustace told BBC Radio Derby:
"It was an excellent all-round performance
We have come to a really difficult place and I don't think many people expected us to get a result here
desire and commitment was there for everyone to see
"Going into the last five or six minutes while 2-1 up I expect to see it out
we defended it very well but it just wasn't well enough today
"But to come away with a point in the end is a positive result."
