we spoke about the production and presentation of archives
and art’s singular ability to touch us where we’re most human
a series of interviews between women visual artists
is supported in part by the Deborah Buck Foundation with additional funding from the Judith Whitney Godwin Foundation
Tara Anne Dalbow How was the experience of putting together a show that spans nearly four decades of your career
María Magdalena Campos-Pons I have to say first that the whole team who put this together
led by Mazie Harris at the Getty Center and Carmen Hermo at the Brooklyn Museum
did a beautiful job going through the archive and bringing forward work that’s never been shown in the United States and pairing photographs and sculptures that have never been seen or considered together
which has gold-leaf footprints crossing over colored tiles and is concerned with tracing the paths of women from the cities surrounding Padua
I made in Canada in 1990 with tiny footprints coming out from my belly button and images of women from my family lineage
Reflecting on connections like that across decades
and materials was full of surprises and very enriching for me
TAD What was your relationship to archives
MMCP Many people from my background live with an archive that is primarily oral
composed mostly of conversations between family members
I grew up with very few photographs of my family history because we didn’t own a camera
So I’ve been very intentionally trying to work through what that means socially and culturally
like in my sculpture installation History of a People Who Were Not Heroes: A Town Portrait (1994) that gathers conversations with my mother
and grand uncles about how they remember a town we don’t have many images of
narrated to me verbally in being made from those conversations and some of my own memories of growing up there too
It was only through language and access to that language that I was able to create a material form
I’m interested in what you do when there isn’t a physical archive
What does the archive look like in those circumstances
but I wonder if you also see it as an archive
it’s an archive: it’s a carrier of geographies
and desires—your own but also those of bodies that have come before you
Like my mother: How often did she tell me that there were things she wished she could do but couldn’t and so hoped for me to do them for her
I feel myself as a continuing vessel of this space of intention
including my mother’s and all the previous generations
and expand is very beautiful in so many ways that we’re living too quickly to pay attention to
TAD How do you understand that space where ancestral lineage and collective history intersect with your time here and with your personal narrative and memories
and family in which the passage of time is viewed very differently
He also told me that I had eyes in my back—that is why there are so many eyes in my art—because he understood how sensitive and perceptive I was
What I want to say is that there’s a kind of acceptance and visibility of the other bodies that appear in our bodies
It’s sort of a dream space in which you can be in several places at once in your mind and your heart
and you may not be able to describe those experiences
but you can feel them or intuit them almost metaphysically
Dreams and what they reveal about the future
They’re connected to a level of consciousness responsible for creativity
and the stamina to make and create what’s never before existed
Our existence and our brains are far more complex than we’ll ever be able to comprehend
is one of the vehicles that allows us to get closer to some truth about it
can you tell me a little about Santería and its enduring influence on your practice
MMCP I can tell you that I’m a woman born into a tradition and that I continue to carry within myself that particular energy
that way of seeing and responding to the world; that a lot of what I know I did not learn linearly
but comes from intuition and DNA; and that I study it with a sense of responsibility and intentionality
but that I’m not an initiated practitioner of Santería
I did a piece in 2003 called The Calling about my commitment to becoming a priest
but a priest not of any specific spiritual tradition but of art
and I’m very methodical and practical about how I interpret and respond to that calling
Starting Gallery Artists Studio Projects in Brookline
Democracy and Justice at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee are examples of responses
I’m always asking questions about the meaning of art: what it’s doing
Every single piece that I do is part of the quest for that answer
I think that the meaning and beauty of my own practice and other artists’ practices are the questions we ask
TAD How have you been able to make your art and activism so nearly indistinguishable
I discovered that I was an artist and that I was interested in people
TAD Around the time you realized you had eyes on your back
I couldn’t deny or ignore what was happening around me because I saw it from every angle of my body
So I had to figure out what to do with this kind of perceptual grasp
People don’t become artists unless making art is what makes being alive and having a self possible
I wouldn’t be a writer and certainly not of poetry
and it’s because you have poetry coming out of your mind
and the same little demon that tells them when they see a light to go find out what it is; but the light moves and will continue to move
But what you asked me about was service and social engagement
I think it goes back to questions and responding to questions
My programs are all responses to questions about society and things in society I’m not satisfied with
I don’t sit on the side and wait for an answer
but you must invest and participate in what you want to see happening around you
especially if you want it to happen differently
TAD During this bout of social and political “extreme weather,” as you might call it
I am and have always been utterly romantic
While there’s been enough disregard for human experience to bring anyone to the point of cynicism
I just cannot function in that kind of negativity; so no matter what
we are no doubt evolving and no doubt moving forward
but that we evolve and move forward with such a limitation of visibility that we are often trapped in the step behind or trapped in our fear of progress
and it’s my interest in this point in time that we’re alive
I’m interested in finding what can make us sensible to each other
we cannot deny the similarities between us
Art helps because good art always touches you where you’re most human
Everyone has experienced that gut feeling before
and it doesn’t matter what kind of art it is; all that matters is that you’ve felt it
that you’ve felt what it means to be human
TAD You often talk about love with regard to your work
so my last question is a simple one about the most essential thing: What does it look like to practice love or act with love right now as a person in the world
MMCP A young kid and a middle-aged man in a field with a soccer ball
An old lady sitting in a corner sipping a little something
A grandmother and a kid walking together hand in hand
Just giving a good answer to a stranger who asks you a question
Love is all about recognizing in others your own needs and vulnerabilities
To spend your day in the service of your best capacity knowing that you might not wake up the next morning—that is love
What I need to tell you is that the only salvation there is is in understanding and practicing love
I will go to my hotel room and do something in the name of radical love
This question has energized something in me
I will call you sometime soon and tell you about it

Patients who adhered to regimen at home saw greater functional gains
A 14-week regimen of physical therapy combined with PoNS — a neurostimulator device used to improve mobility — led to significant gait improvements in people with multiple sclerosis (MS)
with evidence that its benefits are sustained over time
according to new data from the real-world PoNSTEP clinical study
Consistent with earlier data
results from the now-completed study indicated patients who more strictly adhered to the therapeutic regimen during the study’s at-home portion saw greater functional gains
“We look forward to sharing the data to increase awareness on PoNS Therapy at upcoming scientific conferences.”
PoNS is a neurostimulator device intended to improve walking and balance in people with mild or moderate MS
It works by delivering light electrical pulses to the tongue
which are transmitted to the brain via two cranial nerves
This stimulation is believed to promote neuroplasticity
or the brain’s ability to rewire in response to new experiences
PoNS is expected to help strengthen neuronal circuits related to specific tasks
thereby enhancing the benefits of rehabilitation
It’s approved in the U.S. for patients 22 and older
to be used short term in combination with supervised physical rehabilitation programs
The prescribed regimen involves using the PoNS device for 100-120 minutes (1.5-2 hours) daily for 14 weeks (a little over three months)
While accumulating evidence has demonstrated the device’s ability to improve walking abilities for MS patients
it’s possible that poor adherence to the regimen during real-world use could curb its therapeutic benefits
treatment compliance is key to achieving incremental and lasting therapeutic beneficial effects with PoNS Therapy,” Andreeff noted
Helius launched the PoNSTEP study (NCT05437276) to investigate how treatment adherence would influence gait improvements for patients using PoNS in a real-world setting
The study enrolled 41 people with mild-to-moderate MS and walking difficulties who started a 14-week regimen of PoNS along with physical rehabilitation
This included two weeks of in-clinic treatment supervised by a physical therapist
followed by 12 weeks of unsupervised at-home therapy
Participants were then followed for six months in a post-treatment observation period
The study’s main goal was to evaluate changes in dynamic gait index (DGI)
which assesses a person’s ability to maintain balance during various physical tasks
Patients who experienced at least a 30% decline in DGI performance after the six-month observation period were eligible for an additional 12 weeks of therapy
Results indicated a statistically significant improvement in DGI at week 14 among the 38 participants who completed the treatment protocol
the mean DGI improved by 5 points over the treatment period
adherence to the treatment regimen was 89.5%
and there was a mean 2.5-point improvement in DGI over those two weeks
and gait improvements during this phase correlated with adherence to the treatment regimen
Patients who had at least 85% adherence to the regimen exhibited a significantly greater mean improvement in DGI scores than those with less than 85% adherence (3.7 vs
Among 28 patients who completed treatment and were reassessed after the six-month observation period
one person experienced a 30% or greater decline in DGI
The mean DGI decline across all participants was 4.1
Helius indicated these findings support the long-term benefits of PoNS therapy
and are in line with data from clinical trials involving people with balance issues due to traumatic brain injury
“The results from this study validate existing evidence of the efficacy of PoNS across clinical data and real-world utilization of the therapy by demonstrating durability of effect as further evidence of its long-term therapeutic benefits,” said Antonella Favit-Van Pelt

What should have been a dream weekend for Lele Pons turned into a nightmare
The Venezuelan artist and influencer had gathered her closest family and friends to celebrate not just the exciting news that she and husband Guaynaa are expecting a baby girl
but also to mark a milestone with a lavish gender reveal party at Miami's Faena Forum
the joyful event took an unexpected turn — and ended with Pons in the hospital amid a wave of online harassment
On Friday, April 25, Pons and Guaynaa celebrated their gender reveal surrounded by stars like Chayanne, Belinda
As pink paint rained down from the ceiling to reveal the baby's gender
Videos of the incident quickly flooded social media
While some fans expressed concern for the 27-year-old star's health
questioning the safety of using paint during the reveal
with Pons becoming the target of harsh cyberbullying
Pons took to social media to reveal that the online attacks deeply affected her
leading to a brief hospitalization for stress and anxiety
Pons has yet to issue a public statement but has noticeably wiped her social media feed
removing posts from the gender reveal celebration
We're not going to rehash in this article the wave of brutal criticism and comments that were published on social media against the former "Dancing With the Stars" contestant and host of "La Voz México." Suffice it to say that they were brutal and affected her so much that Lele decided to go to the hospital because she was so nervous
everything's perfect," she said in an interview
in which she also revealed that part of the obstetric team managing her pregnancy was at the party
Known for her authenticity and signature sense of humor, Lele Pons has long been open about her struggles with mental health
But the backlash following her gender reveal party accident has taken a heavy emotional toll on the influencer and artist
Sources close to Pons confirm she has deactivated her TikTok account and removed posts related to the event from Instagram
who has spent more than a decade sharing her life and art with the world
With over 54 million followers on Instagram alone
Pons is considered one of the original pioneers of social media video — and someone well-accustomed to the glare of public attention
the sheer volume and cruelty of the attacks proved overwhelming
And while it's true that pregnancy hormones can heighten emotions
the barrage of online criticism would have shaken even the most seasoned internet veterans
It's important to note: Pons didn't do anything wrong
She hosted a celebration for her soon-to-be daughter — and simply slipped
Could she have opted for a different way to reveal the baby's gender
But second-guessing motherhood decisions is an all-too-familiar experience for women everywhere
it's also worth pointing out that Lele's baby bump was never in danger — she fell safely
this episode underscores a larger societal issue: the relentless policing of women's choices
The disproportionate outrage aimed at Pons reflects deeper
entrenched misogyny — a reminder that when women step into the spotlight
every move they make is often subjected to unfair scrutiny
there is a human being — with real emotions and vulnerabilities
Empathy and respect should always outweigh judgment
As Lele Pons navigates this challenging time
let's remember to offer support — not criticism — and extend that same compassion to all women who are forced to live their most personal moments under public scrutiny
Influencer Lele Pons announced she is pregnant and expecting her first baby with her husband Guaynaa

The post continues with a picture of Lele standing above her husband while he snaps a pic of her bump
“We’re PREGNANT!!!!!,” Lele and Guaynaa announced in a joint Instagram post in both English and Spanish March 9
Lele and Guaynaa (whose real name is Jean Carlos Santiago Pérez) didn’t share any additional details including their baby’s due date or sex
that didn’t stop their famous friends from taking to the comments to celebrate the occasion
Former Victoria’s Secret Angel Alessandra Ambrosio wrote
“So cuteeee,” while longtime friend of the couple Anitta joked
Paris Hilton—who served as Lele’s bridesmaid—and Steve Aoki each celebrated the news with a series of emojis
Lele also celebrated the news on her Instagram Story writing
The YouTube personality even shared a video of the moment she found out she was expecting her baby while with friends in Las Vegas
Lele can be seen looking at the pregnancy test
The announcement comes one year after Lele and Guaynaa—who collaborated on “Se Te Nota”—tied the knot during a wedding ceremony in Miami

Former Leon County Schools Superintendent Jackie Pons will once again be at the helm of a school district
"I just didn't have a level of confidence that I would win
but I knew that we worked very hard and with everything I went through
I am extremely humbled," Pons told the Tallahassee Democrat Tuesday night
received 57% of the vote and former Jefferson County Superintendent Al Cooksey
Cooksey was not immediately available for comment Tuesday night
LIVE ELECTION RESULTS: See live results from Jefferson County races
Pons entered the race after the Jefferson County K-12 school
the district's only traditional public school
made a historical gain to a C from the state for its 2023 grade after years of Ds and Fs
And for its 2024 grade, the school went up to a B. All of this was achieved under the leadership of Pons
There are 10,012 registered voters in Jefferson County
about 8,580 people voted in the general election
according to the Jefferson County Supervisor of Elections website
Pons previously said he worried that party lines would matter more to voters than the work he put in as the turnaround principal. Pons was named six years after losing a reelection bid in Leon County in 2016 to Rocky Hanna
who also was victorious Tuesday in seeking his third term in Leon County
Jefferson schools had been under state oversightPons took over just as Somerset Academy charter left the county. It had been contracted by the state Department of Education to turn around the failing district
Cooksey served as the Jefferson County Schools superintendent 2012-16, when it was turned over to state control for financial mishaps and poor academic performance
Pons' career was upended in 2013 when an anonymous notebook — later revealed to have been authored in part by his then-rival Hanna — alleged he was involved in a variety of misdeeds
including favoritism in the awarding of construction contracts
The notebook found its way to the FBI which
along with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement
launched an investigation the next year and concluded no charges would be made
Pons will be officially sworn in to the post on Tuesday

--PoNS Therapeutic Experience Program (PoNSTEP) study demonstrates durable long-term beneficial effects of PoNS Therapy on gait deficit improvement in people with Multiple Sclerosis--
--Statistically significant findings in DGI (Dynamic Gait Index) during Phase 1 and Phase 2 among the 38 subjects who completed the treatment protocol showing a total mean improvement of 5.00 (4.1 to 5.9
2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Helius Medical Technologies
a neurotech company focused on delivering a novel therapeutic neuromodulation approach for balance and gait deficits
today announced positive results from the PoNS Therapeutic Experience Program
study for people with multiple sclerosis (MS)
“The results from this study validate existing evidence of the efficacy of PoNS across clinical data and real-world utilization of the therapy by demonstrating durability of effect as further evidence of its long-term therapeutic benefits,” stated Antonella Favit-Van Pelt
“The PoNSTEP study marks an important stepstone in further understanding the role of neuromodulation and
neuroplasticity in gait function rehabilitation
PoNS Therapy’s neuromodulation effect on brain mechanisms of motor control is likely to enhance neuroplasticity and contribute to maintain PoNS therapeutic effect on gait deficit in people with MS.”
provides the first clinical evidence of a positive relationship between adherence to using the PoNS device with targeted physical exercise (PoNS Therapy) and improvement of gait deficit
along with establishing the long-term therapeutic effect of PoNS Therapy at six months post-treatment in people with MS
This observation is in line with maintenance of effect’s evidence from other clinical trials in people with balance deficits due to traumatic brain injury
The study involved 43 patients with gait deficit due to mild-to-moderate MS
who received 14 weeks of physical rehabilitation with PoNS Therapy
The therapy included 2 weeks in the clinic (Phase 1) and 12 weeks at home (Phase 2)
followed by a 6-month post-treatment observation (Phase 3)
Patients with a 30% or greater decline in functional improvement were eligible for an additional 12 weeks of therapy
with changes evaluated using statistical tests and correlation analyses to assess adherence and DGI improvements
“We are pleased to report the PoNSTEP study results corroborate the known evidence of PoNS Therapy’s efficacy in improving gait deficit due to MS,” stated Dane Andreeff
Helius’ President and Chief Executive Officer
treatment compliance is key to achieving incremental and lasting therapeutic beneficial effects with PoNS Therapy
This important study provides convincing evidence of the role of neuroplasticity for a durable gait function improvement in MS
We thank all the investigators and patients involved in the study and we look forward to sharing the data to increase awareness on PoNS Therapy at upcoming scientific conferences.”
About PoNS Therapeutic Experience Program (PoNSTEP)
The Therapeutic Experience Program (“TEP”) is a Helius-sponsored
interventional multi-center outcome research study designed to assess adherence to on-label PoNS therapy for improvement in gait deficits for patients with multiple sclerosis (“MS”) in a real-world clinical setting
The study aims to understand better the relationship between adherence to on label (100-120 minute per day) PoNS Therapy
which combines the PoNS device with physical therapy
and the therapeutic outcome on gait deficit improvement over 14 weeks of study treatment
as measured by changes in the Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) scores
PoNS therapy is applied in a supervised clinical setting for the first two weeks (Phase 1) and
at home for the remaining 12 weeks (Phase 2)
The study also includes a six month no-treatment follow-up phase aimed at establishing durability of therapeutic effect (Phase 3)
The primary endpoint of the study is maintenance of gait improvement from the end of supervised therapy (Phase 1) to the end of unsupervised therapy (Phase 2) in relation to the subject’s adherence to PoNS therapy
maintenance of improvement of gait and balance deficit over 6-m timeframe and clinical global impression of change
The study was performed at six Centers of Excellence across the United States
including Neurology Center of New England in Foxboro (MA)
Montefiore Medical Center (“Montefiore”) in NY (NY)
Oregon Health & Science University (“OHSU”) in Portland (OR)
MGH Institute of Health Professions in Boston (MA)
and recruited 43 MS participants with gait deficit
The Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator (“PoNS”) is an innovative
orally applied therapy that delivers neurostimulation through a mouthpiece connected to a controller and it’s used
which delivers mild electrical impulses to the tongue
is indicated for use in the United States as a short-term treatment of gait deficit due to mild-to-moderate symptoms from multiple sclerosis (“MS”) and is to be used as an adjunct to a supervised therapeutic exercise program in patients 22 years of age and over by prescription only
PoNS has shown effectiveness in treating gait or balance and a significant reduction in the risk of falling in stroke patients in Canada
PoNS is also authorized for sale in Australia for short term use by healthcare professionals as an adjunct to a therapeutic exercise program to improve balance and gait

US decisions will limit reimbursement for device's mouthpiece to $3K
Medicare or Medicaid will reimburse a lump sum of just less than $3,000 for the mouthpiece portion of PoNS
The organization deferred a decision on what it will cover for the other component of PoNS — its controller — until its next payment cycle
but reimbursement has been preliminarily set at slightly more than $500
Helius believes that this coverage level isn’t fair, and that it will limit access to the technology for MS patients who would benefit from it. The company has indicated plans to engage with CMS to obtain a better reimbursement scheme before the changes go into effect. According to information from the National MS Society provided last year
the list price of the PoNS system is $25,700
“We strongly disagree with CMS’ methods, rationale, pricing and deferral for determining the payment rates for both the PoNS mouthpiece and the PoNS controller,” Dane Andreeff, president and CEO of Helius, said in a company press release
“Helius has spent millions of dollars in R&D to develop technology that the [U.S
Food and Drug Administration] designated a breakthrough device.” The PoNS device was approved in the U.S
“We are hopeful that we will be able to finalize fair reimbursement for the PoNS mouthpiece and controller with CMS in the near future,” Andreeff said
PoNS, or the Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator, is a medical device approved in the U.S. as a short-term treatment for mild or moderate mobility problems in MS patients, ages 22 and older. It’s prescribed alongside a supervised physical rehabilitation program
PoNS earned the accreditation it needed to be covered by Medicare and Medicaid — the U.S
public insurance programs for elderly and low-income people — from CMS last year
Once it is determined that a device can be covered
CMS decides how much will be reimbursed based on factors such as market price and value
as well as the cost of comparable technologies
When the PoNS device first hit the market, Helius offered it at a temporarily subsidized price to aid patient access while it worked on securing reimbursement agreements with insurance carriers
Although that pricing was discontinued earlier this year
as Helius began making negotiations with insurers
CMS still used that value to make its reimbursement decision
that means that the value set by CMS “does not reflect current market pricing,” and is significantly below the reimbursement values that the company has contracted with other major payers
Andreeff indicated that the company plans to approach CMS
prior to its pricing decision taking effect
to ask the organization to “more appropriately use the market pricing established through negotiations with the VA and an insurance carrier.”
CMS has indicated that pricing is more complex
and that it thus needs more time to evaluate the issue
While a final pricing decision won’t be made until the next payment cycle
the organization published a preliminary reimbursement rate of $519.80
That’s based on the organization’s view that the device is similar to a different stimulation technology called transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, or TENS. Designed to deliver electrical stimuli to the skin, TENS is sometimes used to manage MS symptoms such as pain and bladder issues
“CMS has pivoted to improperly find the PoNS controller to be comparable to a TENS device,” Andreeff said
We remain hopeful that CMS will properly set pricing for the PoNS controller
A public meeting will be held in November to discuss this preliminary decision on the controller pricing
“We will again present the differences between the PoNS controller [and] other devices
in the upcoming public meeting,” Andreeff said
“We remain hopeful that CMS will properly set pricing for the PoNS controller.”

Ex-Moto2 rider Axel Pons has radically altered his life after retiring from motorcycle racing
having walked barefoot from Spain to Pakistan on his way to India
who raced in the intermediate class between 2009-17 with limited success
returned to the limelight when a video of him surfaced on the internet and became viral
Pons revealed that he had started his adventure in 2023 and intended to travel as far as India
and was waiting to receive the necessary visa approvals to cross the border
two-time 250cc champion Sito Pons detailed the life-changing journey his 33-year-old son has taken
I think it's something extraordinary and incredibly brave and courageous,” he said
“In March it will have been two years since he left Barcelona
“He began to explain to us that he needed to walk
“Every day he gets up at five in the morning
plus he doesn't go to hotels and only travels with a backpack
Sito explained that his son started the adventure alone
In southern Turkey he met a couple who were traveling the 'Lycian Way'
a route of about 400km in the Tekke Peninsula
“His idea has always been to reach India on foot,” Sito explained
“The problem is that the border between Pakistan and India is closed
“He then decided to go to the Himalayas and spent five months there
just what he did not want: he became famous and known there
“It is so surprising and so amazing that it was foreseeable that it was going to go viral in Europe
And we have already seen what has happened these days
Fortunately he is not aware of what is happening here.”
The stir caused by the video exposed Pons' new life and also triggered speculations about the 33-year-old
with it being claimed that he had either been arrested or had thrown away his passport in the water
his father Sito Pons denied those claims were true
“Axel is fine and has never been arrested,” he said
“He handed over the documentation to the Pakistani agency that was in charge of managing the visa to be able to enter India.”

“I remember that when I had been walking for a few months I wanted to share with him a small piece of his experience
and in one of his calls I told him that I was going to go see him - that was in July 2023
“He told me he was in North Macedonia and the directions to find him
but I did it and we were together for a week
“I remember that when I said goodbye to him I told him that what he was doing was very hard
“I asked him to return home when he arrived in Turkey
and he has been there for six months now.”
Sito Pons is proud of the path his son Axel has taken
praising him for his determination and discipline
“Axel's story is admirable for his effort and ability to sacrifice
driven by love to understand the world from the human perspective by knowing different cultures and religions,” said Sito
“To cross the world on foot you have to have great strength and courage

María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Cornelius Vanderbilt Professor of Art, secured a $1 million grant from the Mellon Foundation to advance the work of the Engine for Art, Democracy & Justice (EADJ)
you are successful when what you dream alone engages others,” said Campos-Pons
This belief is at the core of what EADJ aims to do
and social exploration aimed at developing knowledge and new practices at the intersection of art
A trans-institutional initiative and ongoing collaboration with Fisk University
EADJ explores creative approaches to living together in the global South
Campos-Pons said the grant will not only allow EADJ to continue advancing current projects
it will also allow her to think strategically to ensure the program’s longevity and introduce more collaborations
“One of my visions for EADJ is make it a program with a steady footprint at Vanderbilt—a program that could have a longevity beyond my physical time here,” she said
“This Mellon Foundation grant is an opportunity to redefine and rethink how EADJ moves forward
honoring the commitment that we have already in place
honoring a continuum of some ideas and some projects that we have in place
but allowing the program to rethink what the structure is and how I’m going to move forward with EADJ
Campos-Pons expressed her gratitude to the Mellon Foundation
“To receive a grant of this significance is an incredible gesture and also an affirmation that the path that you have taken as an artist is understood and celebrated by others
and it aligns with their own vision,” she said
“I am humbled by that and feel gratitude knowing that my vision is not just an artist’s dream.”
after suffering falls during her gender reveal
is facing emotional stress due to criticism on social media
the emotional impact led her to the hospital to ensure her well-being and that of her baby
By Deneb González
During the gender reveal of her baby with Guaynaa, Lele Pons experienced two spectacular falls after slipping on a pink liquid that could have had serious consequences for her pregnancy
and Venezuelan model had to go to the hospital the day after the accident
not because of issues with her pregnancy but due to the stress caused by the criticism she received on social media for her gender reveal
In an interview with journalist Javier Ceriani
everything is perfect; two of the people who take care of me in the hospital when I go to check on the baby were also there
I haven’t been well for many reasons,” Lele said
“It’s a little more difficult when you’re pregnant
I went to get checked for the stress the next day because I had an amazing night and returned home because everything was fine after being checked
And the next day I open social media and yes
but it was very different this time because what I feel the baby will feel
so immediately I said I need to get checked again
Lele added that she had to drink a lot of water to try to calm down because she was very nervous: “The things they told me were very harsh
and many times you believe everything they say because your hormones are all over the place.” The hardest part for her was being told that she intentionally wanted to harm her baby
“All the time I was with people who were helping me because physically I’m fine
people think that individuals like me don’t see anything
There have been many wonderful people who have sent me incredible messages
and they don’t realize the difference those kinds of messages make,” she added
What should have been an unforgettable moment for Lele Pons and Guaynaa upon discovering they are expecting a girl turned into a painful and stressful experience
not only due to the dangerous falls Lele suffered but also because of the reactions the incident sparked on social media
Lele Pons experienced two falls after slipping on pink liquid that was on stage
Lele did not suffer any serious physical injuries
but the event sparked a wave of criticism on social media
Lele Pons went to the hospital the day after the event not for physical issues resulting from the falls
but due to the emotional stress caused by the criticism received on social media
She herself admitted that the stress affected her emotionally and she decided to seek medical help
There were many criticisms on social media regarding the event's safety
she also received supportive messages from some individuals
Lele Pons stated that she was physically fine
but emotionally affected by the criticism and related stress
She asserted that stress during pregnancy is something she is learning to manage and that she went to the hospital to calm down and receive emotional support
Greater gains in walking function seen for patients adhering to regimen
People with multiple sclerosis (MS) who better adhere to an at-home therapy regimen with the PoNS device — which provides electrical stimulation to the brain and is approved for use in combination with physical rehabilitation — may experience greater improvements in walking function
That’s according to early data from PoNSTEP (NCT05437276)
a real-world study that’s testing how adherence to the 14-week PoNS therapy regimen reflects on changes in gait
Full data from the observational study are expected early next year
after the six-month follow-up phase has been completed
According to Helius Medical Technologies
these early results provide strong evidence about the importance of people with MS adhering to their treatment plan
“We are encouraged to see the meaningful gait deficit improvements in patients who were consistently compliant with their therapy regimen,” Antonella Favit-Van Pelt, MD, PhD, Helius’ chief medical officer, said in a company press release
The PoNS device is designed to improve walking and balance in people with mild to moderate MS
It delivers gentle electrical pulses to the tongue
which are transmitted to the brain through two major cranial nerves
this electrical stimulation is intended to promote the brain’s ability to rewire itself in response to new experiences
When used in combination with physical rehabilitation
the device promotes the development and strengthening of neuronal circuits related to a given task
which involves using the PoNS device for 100 minutes (slightly longer than 1.5 hours) to 120 minutes
we often face challenges with patients embracing the importance of fully complying with their rehabilitation program,” Favit-Van Pelt said
Knowing compliance can be an issue, the company sponsored the PoNSTEP study to test how adherence to treatment with the PoNS device reflects on improvements in gait. The trial enrolled a total of 41 adults, ages 22 and older, with a diagnosis of MS and difficulty walking
who received treatment in a real-world clinical setting
The participants engaged in a therapy regimen that included two weeks of in-clinic PoNS treatment supervised by a certified physical therapist
38 patients (93%) completed the 14-week therapy regimen
All are now being followed for an additional six months to assess for long-term benefits
The PoNSTEP study provides compelling evidence on how
with any self-directed at home physical therapy activity
adherence can significantly determine how much functional improvement any patient can achieve
The initial results showed that the PoNSTEP study achieved its primary goal of demonstrating significant improvements in Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) scores after the 12 weeks of unsupervised therapy
Higher DGI scores indicate a better ability to maintain walking balance in various conditions while responding to different tasks
The goal of showing a link between adherence and DGI improvements in this period was also met
“the PoNSTEP study provides compelling evidence on how
adherence can significantly determine how much functional improvement any patient can achieve.”
In the two weeks of in-clinic PoNS therapy
average therapy adherence was nearly 90% with a mean improvement of 2.5 points in DGI scores
with an additional 2.8-point improvement in DGI scores
While adherence was not associated with the degree of improvements in the supervised part
a significant association was observed in the unsupervised period
therapy adherence averaged greater than 70%
resulting in an average five-point improvement in DGI scores
Among those with high adherence (70% or more)
and 74% experienced at least a four-point improvement
These data “confirm the importance of the at-home rehabilitation part of PoNS therapy
following the supervised in-clinic treatment
in achieving optimal gait deficit improvement results,” said Salvatore Napoli
medical director of the Neurology Center of New England in Foxboro
In line with clinical studies and real-world data
half of the patients who used the PoNS device for the recommended 100-120 minutes per day — who achieved 85%-100% adherence
respectively — improved their DGI scores by more than six points over the 14 weeks of therapy
“the study’s preliminary results provide material confirmatory evidence of the therapeutic benefits of PoNS therapy for gait deficit improvement in people with MS and strengthen the body of clinical evidence pointing to the importance of utilizing the therapy at the recommended dose regularly and consistently.”
A former employee says the New York football team and the NFL are using his design without permission and obtained the trademark fraudulently
The Jets hired Pons in 1973 as an office worker and two years later he launched the team’s in-house operations for producing video for coaching staff to use in practice
after the team said it was opening a competition for a new logo
professional graphics designers to create the new logo
Pons’ design was used from 1978 to 1997 and has been in use for a second time since last year
the team amended its trademark registration to incorporate the new design
Pons sought to obtain the copyright for it but his application to the U.S
Patent and Trademark Office was rejected on the grounds it didn’t meet the threshold for originality
which uses the font from the team’s original logo
was to incorporate as a part of the letter “J” a jet-like graphic that flies above the word “Jets.”
Pons is asking the court to grant him the copyright to the work
Pons’ design well exceeds the ‘extremely low’ requisite level of creativity required by law,” Pons’ attorneys say in the lawsuit on his behalf
“and since it possesses at least ‘some creative spark,’ his design is entitled to copyright protection.”
What’s more, since the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision earlier this year in Loper Bright, the court owes no deference to USPTO’s decision
is seeking a share in the revenue that the team and the league generate through the sale of merchandise that includes the logo
said the Jets should fairly compensate his client
“continue to misappropriate for enormous profit” Pons’ work
“The Jets simply continue to take advantage of an unsuspecting elderly layperson
He deserves to be treated with fairness and respect.”
The lawsuit alleges the Jets acted fraudulently when it amended its trademark registration in 1978 to replace its earlier logo with the new one
the team said the logo was first used in 1970
but the new design wasn’t created until 1978
“The Application claimed that the Pons’ Design was first used in connection with the clothing items listed as early as January 15
and in interstate commerce with the clothing items listed as early as December 31
“This statement was false – and impossible
Attorneys say Pons faces a tough road to prevail
Among the arguments the team can make is that, since Pons was an employee at the time, the design is a work for hire and is owned by the team. For Pons to prevail on this basis, he would have to show that he did the work separate from his job, Eleanor Lackman, a partner at Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp, said in a Bloomberg Law report
The team could also double down on USPTO’s rejection of Pons’ copyright application and say the design isn’t original enough for Pons to have any rights in it
But that defense comes with its own problems
because it could make it hard for the team to obtain the copyright itself
IP attorney Evan Everist of Dorsey & Whitney told Bloomberg
Also working against Pons is the length of time that elapsed before he applied for the copyright
Pons had allowed the company to use the design for almost 20 years
without taking any steps to claim rights to it
“The Jets could argue the logo’s use was clearly authorized given Pons’ longstanding acquiescence,” Bloomberg reported Everist saying
The Jets didn’t immediately respond to a request from Legal Dive for comment but in a statement to the New York Post after Pons filed his original complaint
the team said the lawsuit was without merit
“The mark in question has been registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for nearly 50 years,” the team said
“The mark has been used continuously in numerous iterations since that time
We find this claim baseless and without merit.”

focusing on the sublimation of ice through the porous cometary nucleus
The key factors affecting ejected mass estimates are the outburst amplitude and the active surface area during both quiet sublimation and the outburst phases
Pogson’s law was used to express outburst magnitude
incorporating scattering cross-sections of cometary agglomerates
The model iteratively determined the mass ejected in observed outbursts
considering various ice types (H2O and CO2) controlling sublimation activity
Our results indicate that the mass ejected during these outbursts ranges from 1010 to 1013 kg
Our findings highlight the significant role of surface morphology and thermodynamic conditions in cometary outbursts
providing insights into the mechanisms driving these phenomena and their implications for cometary evolution and dust trail formation
Based on the analysis of observational data
we propose a six-level classification system for cometary outbursts

Josh and Mike Pons at Country Life Farm in 2014
The stairs to this historic haven are steep
reminders of bygone days that feel as fresh as the grass outside the century-old farmhouse
and boxes are snapshots of the history of a sport
evidence of the Pons family's front-row seat for the names and events that shaped racing in the first half of the 20th century
Readers have already had a peek into Country Life Farm's attic trove thanks to a special 2018 edition of Josh Pons' regular column "Letters from Rockland Farm" in BloodHorse magazine
the author shared photos of a young Man o' War unearthed in an unmarked cardboard file box
the century's best Thoroughbred unmistakable in a series of images from 1917
As he continues his excavation of his family archives
Pons has collected both his discoveries from the farm's past and their connection to its present and future in a new book
"Letters from Country Life: Adolphe Pons
and the Founding of Maryland's Oldest Thoroughbred Farm."
Keeneland Library Presents an Evening with Josh Pons
Pons will discuss his new release depicting a century of life inside the horse business
written from inside the fences of Maryland’s oldest Thoroughbred farm.
enjoy a book signing and reception with Pons.
Pons' third tome is the newest title offered by Globe Pequot's Eclipse Press imprint
a revival of the former publishing arm of the BloodHorse that offers titles on the sport as well as on horse care
The Eclipse Award winner has two previously published books
"Country Life Diary: Three Years in the Life of a Horse Farm" and "Merryland: Two Years in the Life of a Racing Stable," on his resume as well as his long-running BloodHorse column
"Letters from Country Life" is a departure from his previous works as he balances his exploration of his family's history and their place within the broader history of the sport with the lessons he learns from the letters and photographs they have left behind

As Pons unearths correspondence from his grandfather's era and then his uncle and father's era
a delicate balance between the context and the content for the author personally and for his audience as well
but be in the way enough that my presence would distinguish the book from just a history book," he said of the writing process
Through visual and written artifacts Pons gets to know his grandfather Adolphe
who emigrated to the United States from France as a child when his father went to work as a chef for the August Belmont family
Adolphe later worked for August Belmont Jr.
and was part for the famed 1918 disposal sale where Man o' War was sold to Samuel Riddle
The elder Pons buys the farm he named Country Life near Baltimore
a time when the nation and the sport wrestled with the economic emergency we know as the Great Depression
Readers interact with the elder Pons and many of the sport's important figures as the narrative progresses from the early decades of the 20th century through the tenure of sons Joe and John in its second half
experience the gems unearthed from the farmhouse's storage
his ancestors' perseverance through hard times a road map for dealing with the challenges we face in the 21st century
The genesis for Pons's new book came in early 2017 after his mother's death
"found letters from grandfather that prompted me to go to the basement and do further research
the prominence of a lot of the names of the people he corresponded with and the people he worked for
this is stuff that should be shared.' "What started out as a grandson's search for the grandfather he never knew became more than family records
"I just felt like I wanted to tell a story
and then I expanded the family angle to make it a little more universal."
Those themes partner with Pons's and his audience's investments in the sport and those formative relationships to create a story that leaves readers appreciating not only where they came from but also the decisions and relationships that made racing what it is today
The materials that inspired the 200-plus pages of "Letters from Country Life" are the tip of the iceberg
Pons speculates that "there may be a third to half again as much stuff that I haven't even opened yet," an archive that could inspire more explorations of these bygone eras
Such opportunities continue the work that Pons started with his first three titles and his BloodHorse column
a time capsule of lessons about life with horses
Pons wants to leave readers with "an awareness of all the hard work of people that came before them
But this thing didn't just start this summer at Saratoga or five years ago when a rich guy got in the game
If August Belmont doesn't put The Jockey Club together in 1896
[he doesn't] get us out of the Progressive Movement's bullseye and impose order on this big freewheeling game that was evolving."
"So many people have played the game ahead of you and left it for you to play
None of them shirked responsibilities," the author and Country Life co-owner observed
"They understood that you can't have this unless you have that
I think that a person who likes racing is going to be able to get an appreciation for the efforts of people generations [behind] them."
The Pons family's legacy of dedication and perseverance serves as a bridge between generations of his family as well as of those readers who love the sport at the heart of this story
fostering a deep respect for the past and a shared commitment to the future

an altar-like installation that honors the many generations in her family and in the African diaspora who labored as domestic workers
Unique to the Getty’s installation of the touring exhibition is Elevata (2002)
an expansive photographic grid on loan from the Indianapolis Museum of Art
which will be featured in a section of the exhibition that deals with the “extreme weather” of racial oppression and climate catastrophe
Campos-Pons is a 2023 recipient of the MacArthur Foundation “genius” award and in December 2024 was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by ARTnews for her efforts to show “how the past is embedded in us
“For decades Campos-Pons has committed herself to deploying art as a tool of healing,” Getty curator Mazie Harris said
“As Los Angeles mourns all that has been lost in the recent wildfires and comes together to help rebuild
we hope that the exhibition can serve as a space for solace and for reflection on our relationships with nature and with each other.”Complementing the exhibition is an audio guide that includes Campos-Pons speaking about works in the show in both English and Spanish

The celebrated Nashville-based artist’s exhibition opens Sept
When you talk with María Magdalena Campos-Pons
On a recent Tuesday afternoon at her studio on the Vanderbilt University campus
the artist padded across a makeshift flat file — layers of works-on-paper she covered with cardboard and yoga mats on the floor — in slippers she picked up from a recent stay at an Italian hotel
She beams with what seems like a real sense of wonder
holding a staff made from dried sunflowers affixed to a stick with black gaffer tape
Campos-Pons in conversation with curators Carmen Hermo and Katie Delmez
“I’m realizing that I’ve got an American Gothic look here,” she jokes before placing the staff carefully back in its place among various handmade paint brushes
Campos-Pons explains that the staff is actually a kind of broom she recently made for a performance
and then speaks of how powerful the act of cleaning a space can be
“I’m interested in the idea of labor as a beautifying process,” she says
explaining that this was the way she grew up
raised by workers at a former sugar plantation in Cuba
“That’s my personal history — how much beauty was surrounding me in places of scarcity.”
It’s hard to make small talk when approached with such direct tenderness
María Magdalena Campos-Pons — Magda to her friends — is the subject of what might be the most important exhibition of work by a Nashville-based artist in recent history
which opens at the Frist Art Museum on Sept
spans nearly 40 years of the artist’s work and includes photos
It’s her first multimedia museum survey since 2007
but more importantly — for Nashville at least — it’s the first career-spanning survey of the artist’s work since she became a Nashville resident in 2017
Among the most magnificent pieces in the show are recent works that Campos-Pons made in the seven years she’s lived here
But to fully appreciate the stories those works tell
you must first get familiar with her artistic lineage
In many ways, Campos-Pons’ installation Spoken Softly With Mama is the artist’s masterpiece, and it returns to Nashville after a 2011 exhibition that was also at the Frist
But a more straightforward starting point into the artist’s world is a 24-by-20-inch Polaroid Polacolor Pro photograph from 1999
the ultra-large Polaroid was made in the late 1990s
about a decade after she first arrived in the U.S
Both works also foreshadow ideas that Campos-Pons would return to throughout her career
The Polaroid is called “The Right Protection,” and it shows the artist from the back — from the nape of her neck to the base of her spine
Her bare skin is covered in dozens of drawn-on eyes
“seeing beyond the sight of the eyes — sensorial seeing
perceptual and seeing with the body itself.”
also called “The Right Protection” — further explores Campos-Pons’ practice as a curious instigator
but instead of painting the eyes onto the paper’s surface
the “eyes are merging as the paper is being dried,” she says
which is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art
shows one of Campos-Pons’ greatest strengths
She is able to translate ideas in different mediums and through different methods — in this case both photography and printmaking
The eyes return in pieces that the artist made while living in Nashville
and if you look closely you’ll find eyes emphasized or drawn into many of Campos-Pons’ works
The 2020 ink-and-watercolor painting “Miasma #7” was made during the long days of the early pandemic when Campos-Pons was working from home
The pieces from this time period reflect the stunted way we all processed the world — instead of her body
In an attempt to include examples from all of Campos-Pons’ expansive output
Behold is divided into sections based on theme rather than chronology and medium
Each section works like its own mini exhibition — “History of a People Who Were Not Heroes” features three powerful installations
and “Process and Performance” addresses the artist’s continuing use of her own presence as a conduit for ideas
The show opened in September 2023 at the Brooklyn Museum — less than a month before the artist received a prestigious MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellowship — and will travel to the J
Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center in L.A
There’s one series in particular that will perhaps resonate with her Nashville audiences more than their New York or Los Angeles counterparts
Secrets of the Magnolia Tree is Campos-Pons’ series of massive mixed-media works that monumentalize the artist and her friends as anthropomorphized owls
These 132-by-90-inch multipanel works read like photographs that have been painted on top and alongside of
but of course there is much more to them than that
The titular magnolia tree is a relatively new item that Campos-Pons has begun to incorporate into her work
It began when she moved to Nashville to work as the Cornelius Vanderbilt Professor of Art at Vanderbilt University
The university grounds are located on an arboretum
to which she attributes this recurring symbol of the magnolia — a symbol that seems to haunt her recent work
“What I saw was not only the beauty of the nature here,” she explains
“but walking in Vanderbilt’s arboretum — and having the privilege to explore and be in the company of the magnolia — was for me a way to think about the complex history of the South
and the relationship between Black people in the South and the landscape is a complex one
So to reconcile my celebration of the beauty of the tree — which I do
I cannot help it — I need to … engage myself in the reverie of this location.”
To imagine herself as an owl is a way to appreciate the Southern landscape — and especially its trees — with the necessary detachment from the horror of its history
you cannot help but revel in the beauty of the world
and she speaks in what seem like carefully parsed fragments of off-the-cuff poetry: “It was a complex history
She picks up a small brush and dabs at a bit of white paint
she’s painting on a large-scale photo of a cracked cement wall that she took on a recent visit to her hometown of Matanzas
She’s attentively tracing lines around the cracks in the gray cement
working slowly and deliberately in a kind of Japanese wabi-sabi
and in the process she will beautify its presence instead of erasing it
The exhibition title is fitting for an artist like Campos-Pons
who takes the smallest things — like looking
seeing and being seen — and turns them into universally relevant points of interest simply through her careful appreciation
What is it about witnessing that is so important
“We are voyeurs of our times,” she says simply
“Everyone is a participant in the narration of time.”
María Magdalena Campos-Pons’ 'Behold' tops our list of the season’s most exciting art
