France — Julian Alaphilippe’s ride in the yellow jersey is over
The Tour de France leader was stripped of the coveted shirt on Wednesday after being handed a time penalty for illegally receiving provisions near the end of Stage 5, which had been largely uneventful until then.
British rider Adam Yates was moved up to first place in the revised general standings after Alaphilippe was docked 20 seconds.
“I don’t think any rider would want to take the jersey like this,” Yates said. “I just found out. Nobody wants to take a jersey like this.”
Only minutes after versatile Belgian rider Wout van Aert won the stage in a sprint finish, TV footage showed Alaphilippe grabbing a bottle from a staff member of his Deceuninck-Quick Step squad about 18 kilometers (11 miles) from the finish.
Under racing rules, riders are not allowed to receive provisions — either drinks or food — during the final 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) of a stage. Deceuninck-Quick Step did not immediately explain why the staff member was posted inside that zone and why he handed out the bottle to Alaphilippe.
Olympics
Allyson Felix, Gabby Douglas and Billie Eilish are among the athletes, artists and celebrities who have created logos for the 2028 L.A. Olympics.
Alaphilippe’s teammate Dries Devenyns said the jury’s decision was harsh, and that “a fine would make more sense than a time penalty.”
“There is no time gain in taking a bottle from the side of the road,” he wrote on Twitter.
Yates now tops the standings with a three-second lead over Primoz Roglic. Tadej Pogacar, another Slovenian rider, stands third, four seconds further back. Alaphilippe dropped to 16th overall, 16 seconds behind the new leader.
Alaphilippe waived to the crowd as he left the finish area without the race leader’s jersey he had worn for the last three stages.
“It was a very long and very boring stage, with a very nervous finale. I had to stay concentrated to defend the jersey,” said the Frenchman, who is not seen as a contender for the overall victory. “But if that’s how it is, then no worries, tomorrow I’ll pick myself up and we won’t talk about it anymore.”
The jury’s decision overshadowed Van Aert’s second career stage win at cycling’s marquee event, a day after he produced a tremendous effort in the Alps in support of Roglic, his Jumbo Visma team leader.
Van Aert used his power in the slight uphill finish to win by half a wheel ahead of Cees Bol and Sam Bennett.
“It was a heavy finish. It was maybe the most easy stage I ever did in a cycling race because there was no breakaway, not a high pace at all, but then the last hour was really hectic with the wind,” Van Aert said.
The Belgian abandoned the Tour last year with a serious leg injury that kept him sidelined for several months. But the three-time cyclocross world champion has been in superb form since the cycling season resumed last month, posting victories at the Strade Bianche, Milan-San Remo, as well as a stage win at the Criterium du Dauphine.
A humble rider regarded as a future great, Van Aert will now return to his “domestique” role, as a support rider for Roglic and other teammates.
Sandwiched between the race’s first summit finish in the Alps and Thursday’s tough climb up Mont Aigoual, the 183-kilometer stage through the Drome Provencale region gave the peloton a chance to relax a bit.
The stage started from Gap at a moderate pace under a bright sunshine, with riders talking to each other inside the peloton as they gently rode toward Privas, the French town famous for its chestnut cream.
French hope Thibaut Pinot, who crashed heavily during the opening stage last week, made the most of the pedestrian tempo to have his shoulder checked by the race doctor, then returned inside the pack without problem.
The strong headwinds deterred attacks and the race only heated up with 35 kilometers left when the big teams moved forward and jostled for position at the front to make sure they did not get caught in crosswinds. Sepp Kuss, an American riding in support of Roglic, crashed in the peloton but was able to resume racing and did not lose time.
The Tour, which was postponed from its usual July slot due to the coronavirus, ends in Paris on Sept. 20.

Bennett takes over as points leader in Privas
Irishman Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-QuickStep) traded his national champion's kit for the green jersey after winning the intermediate sprint bonus in l'Épine after 47.5km of the 183km stage from Gap to Privas while Sagan could only manage fourth
On a day where a breakaway should have been able to go clear and sweep up some of the more valuable positions
the Bora-Hansgrohe rider followed the lead-out train of Team Sunweb after being dropped into position by Daniel Oss
Bennett was faster and dashed around Sagan before the line to take third on the day behind stage winner Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Cees Bol (Sunweb)
Peter Sagan takes Tour de France green jersey number 126
"It was OK - we went in the front, Daniel put me in good position. In the end Van Aert won with a nice sprint and I was fourth, which is OK. Sunweb have a good train - they demonstrated this in the days before. They did well."
Sagan has spent 127 days leading the points classification at the Tour de France over the course of his career. Most years he's taken the jersey after two or three stages and held it through to Paris. He traded back and forth with André Greipel and Mark Cavendish in 2015 and 2016, respectively but went on to win a total of seven Tour de France overall points classifications in the last eight years, only missing out in 2017 after being ejected from the race.
When asked if there was something wrong on Wednesday, Sagan shrugged: "It's only the fifth day. We arrive for a bunch sprint and I lose some points but I still got some points. The Tour de France is long and the climbing stages are coming. I have to be relaxed."
Having Bennett take the green jersey from Sagan will be consolation for Deceuninck-Quickstep, who lost the overall race lead after the jury penalized Julian Alaphilippe for taking an illegal feed inside the final 20 kilometres. Alaphilippe dropped out down to 16th overall, now 16 seconds behind new race leader Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott).

A teenage girl whose forceful bundling into a BMW in the south of France sparked a nationwide appeal for witnesses was the victim of a traditional Chechen pre-marriage kidnapping
Witnesses had told how on Sunday three people in a BMW had snatched the previously unidentified girl
as she left a park with a companion who appeared to be involved in the abduction
The manner of her disappearance led to a nationwide appeal for witnesses in a bid to find the girl
reportedly wearing a light-colored skirt at the time of her abduction
from Privas in the southeastern Ardeche region
Police received calls from as far afield as Belgium and Switzerland from people who thought they might have seen her
An umbrella she left at the scene of the "crime" was sent to a laboratory for analysis in the hope of finding a clue as to her identity or that of her abductors
The main witness said that a Volkswagen Passat had cut them off as they tried to give chase
Another witness said they had seen a BMW acting suspiciously in the area shortly before the kidnapping
Police eventually managed to identify the girl and trace her family to the southwestern Haute-Garonne region
a source close to the inquiry told Agence France Presse
Her family explained that she had simply fallen victim to the Chechen tradition whereby the groom's family kidnaps the bride-to-be ahead of the wedding
"The inquiry is still underway," the local prosecutor insisted
declining to comment on the Chechen connection

Deceuninck-Quick Step rider Sam Bennett of Ireland
celebrates on the podium after stage 5 of the Tour de France from Gap to Privas - Pool via REUTERS/Thibault Camus
A third place finish on stage five of the Tour de France was enough to see Sam Bennett become to first Irishman to wear the green jersey for 31 years
Although the stage win he craves eluded him once again after being beaten in the sprint by Wout van Aert.
Bennett at least did enough on the day to move clear of former three-time world champion Peter Sagan in the points classification
Sagan has dominated the green jersey with seven victories in the the points race since 2012
but some brilliant tactical riding by Bennett and his Quickstep team saw the 29-year-old overhaul the Slovakian
Bennett will swap his green and white jersey of Irish national champion for the maillot vert as he becomes the first Irishman to pull on any of the classification jerseys since fellow Carrick-on-Suir man Sean Kelly wore green into Paris in 1989

The sprinter was fourth on Stage 1 before being beaten on the line by Caleb Ewan into Sisteron on Monday but his points tally has been bolstered by two impressive displays in the intermediate sprints over the last two days
After getting the better of Sagan on Stage 4 to move level on 83 points
Bennett took the maximum (20) at today’s intermediate sprint with team-mate Michael Morkov helping to increase the advantage by sweeping up the points for second leaving Sagan back in fourth
Bennett now leads the former World Champion by 123 points to 114
Adam Yates inherited the yellow jersey after Bennett's Deceuninck-QuickStep team-mate Julian Alaphilippe was hit with a time penalty at the end of the stage
Van Aert was strongest in the sprint after the 183km stage from Gap to Privas but the drama came after the race was over
when commissaires took 20 seconds off Alaphilippe for an illegal feed inside the final 20 kilometres
elevated into the race lead as he became the ninth Briton in history to don the yellow jersey
News of Alaphilippe’s time penalty took some of the shine off Bennett’s celebrations in green
“We only heard about it obviously after the finish
We thought we’d have yellow and green but unfortunately we don’t have it now
“I’m honoured to wear (green) at least once and I’m really happy that happened today
It’s hard to go for stages and the green jersey – today I was so focused on the green I almost forgot to really
“I’ve never had such mixed feelings in my career
I’m really happy to have green but sad to have lost the stage
In the last two kilometres I didn’t have the legs to sprint
but I’m pretty happy with my performance in the end
“It is special for me to be the third Irishman to wear the green jersey
I will do everything to keep it,” said Bennett
who joins Kelly and Stephen Roche on that roll of honour
Mark Cavendish and Geraint Thomas in pulling on the yellow jersey
came to the Tour insisting he would focus only on stage wins after an illness hurt his preparations to have another tilt at the general classification
“It’s not the way I imagined taking the jersey," Yates said
" I’m not even sure what happened to Julian – I heard he got a time penalty for taking a feed late
If I’m honest I don’t think anyone wants to take a jersey like this but I guess we’ll wear it tomorrow
“Tomorrow I was looking to try to take the jersey anyway so we’ll go in with the same tactics
try and win the stage and see what happens.”
the UCI has announced Imola as the new venue for the road race World Championships
which was due to take place near the UCI headquarters in Aigle-Martigny in Switzerland
will now take place in Italy between Thursday September 24 and Sunday September 27
