before it was confronted with an accelerated transformation of the market in the 2010s which required a complete industrial overhaul the first 204 employees produced the first tire on April 5 1974: a 14-inch tire for the Citroën Maserati The manufacturing process involved an AMM (Automatic Manufacturing Machine) a new workshop opened to produce even larger 19 and even 20-inch tires for high- and very high-end vehicles The early 2010s heralded great challenges: on a broadly and enduringly sluggish European market the high-end tire segment witnessed the emergence of new The site’s production was split at the time between 70% high-end tires (16 and 17-inch) and only 30% very high-end tires (18-inch and higher) that now employed some 900 employees and produced 4 million casings per year At the behest of the site’s labor organizations the Group accepted to introduce an innovative policy to co-build an alternative solution to drastic restructuring with employees the site’s management and employees worked for several months with support from the central teams to define a joint analysis of the plant’s overall performance The aim was to offer the Group a thorough transformation plan to fully reposition the site in the very high-end segment (or ultra-high-performance) which at the time only represented a third of its production the project required significant investment to implement the new C3M manufacturing process overhaul the working organization to enable greater reactivity and develop new skills for most of the site’s workforce It was officialized in May 2015 by means of the signature of the Future Pact 2015-2019 that laid down the reciprocal undertakings between staff and management A successful transformation Since 2019 the smooth functioning of the Phoenix project and the still favorable situation on the ultra-high-performance market have enabled the transformation to continue beyond initial ambitions perpetuating the co-construction work launched on-site a decade ago the plant produced 70% 17-inch tires (and below) and only 30% 18-20-inch tires with 30% of production being destined for the manufacturers’ market and 80% for the European market the Michelin Group has invested 300 million euros to transform the Roanne site half of which is earmarked for renovating its industrial machinery 90% of the site’s production involved C3M and by 2025 the plant plans to produce all of its tires using this automated and digitized process the factory offers its clients a bespoke offer: 150 industrializations carried out in 2023 a portfolio of 162 sizes and a working organization that enables high reactivity  While the initial project foresaw the loss of around one hundred jobs the site’s workforce in 2024 is now equivalent to that in 2014:  833 employees in mid-2024 approximately 850 in 2014 (permanent and fixed-term contracts) The site’s modernization has resulted in an increase in workstation ergonomics and a sharp increase in the development of business lines and skills; in particular a significant spike in the number of machine operators and maintenance technicians  A large-scale training plan was rolled out during the period to help production operators acquire new skills more than 300,000 training hours gave rise to this human transformation a C3M maintenance school even opened on-site with 8 people joining the first year group in May the increase in accountability permitted management changes to facilitate employee autonomy on a daily basis the project allowed the site to greatly enhance its environmental performance: electric tire curing incorporated into the C3M process resulted in the virtual elimination of greenhouse gas emissions with an aim of reaching zero emissions in 2025 by transitioning to green gas; -water consumption dropped by 60% with regard to 2022 with an aim of reaching an 85% reduction in 2026; the site’s refocusing on a local-to-local approach with 80% of production destined for Europe also helped to reduce its environmental impact The site’s 2025-2026 roadmap must allow the Roanne site to consolidate the benefits of a decade’s worth of transformation and to assert its position as part of the Group’s industrial strategy in Europe supporting staff in the transition to 100% C3M; increasing the ultra-high-performance capacity up to 2 million casings per year; doubling the innovation capacity (industrialization of new casings) Achieving these aims will be contingent on the site’s specific culture that is characterized by positive and resolutely future-oriented social dialogue The history of the Roanne site shows that Made in France is a challenge that can be met even if this is increasingly difficult in the current context modernizing the manufacturing process and environmental policy: the Roanne plant has seized this rare opportunity to develop a rapidly-evolving market to meet a series of expectations that are prerequisites for an industrial site’s viability Photos attachments available on: https://contentcenter.michelin.com:443/portal/shared-board/6029ec12-729d-4fe0-a8a3-86d0e9fca61f Michelin is uniquely positioned to make decisive contributions to human progress and to a more sustainable world Drawing on its deep know-how in polymer composites Michelin is constantly innovating to manufacture high-quality tires and components for critical applications in demanding fields as varied as mobility The care placed in its products and deep customer knowledge inspire Michelin to offer the finest experiences This spans from providing data- and AI-based connected solutions for professional fleets to recommending outstanding restaurants and hotels curated by the MICHELIN Guide Author Roanne Lau writes how her culture and heritage (plus fond memories of visiting her grandparents) slowly shaped the world of her new novel a sleepy seaside town in Malaysia where the sun burns ceaselessly and time seems to slow in there used to be some part of me that dreaded heading back there for overnight visits—the city-slicker part that was used to modern conveniences wouldn’t quite know how to handle the lack of air conditioning or ceiling fans necessary to combat Malaysia’s intense heat and humidity Nor would that inner city-slicker enjoy the way mosquitoes would swarm me and inflict bites all over my limbs throughout the day the windows being left wide open since we could rely only on the natural breeze for air circulation And you can imagine how much chagrin that wee little city-slicker had while using my grandparents’ bathroom which were simple squat toilet affairs and where showers had to be taken the old-school mandi baldi way—dipping a pail into a well and pouring the collected water over myself involuntarily flinching when what felt like ice-cold liquid made contact with my bare naked flesh But my other childhood memories of Kuala Selangor made up for those minor hassles hushing the city-slicker with quaint small-town pleasures: chowing down some of the freshest seafood you’d ever find (my personal favourite being the salted egg yolk mantis shrimp—so good); visiting the famous hill nearby my maternal grandmother’s house where an old fort once stood watching the silvered leaf monkeys run around the old cannons (if I was lucky I’d spot an adorable mother cradling an even more adorable redheaded newborn to her chest as she scrambled around the hill); and taking a rickety wooden boat out to the mangroves as the sun set to watch the fireflies come out their little yellow lights limning the thick river-drenched roots with otherworldly charm I didn’t know it at the time—what kid is prescient enough to?—but these were just some of the memories that would make up the bedrock of my brain the lens through which I viewed the world even as life took me away to other cities When I started building the world for The Serpent Called Mercy in my youth—because every bored kid living in the era of dial-up internet needed a paracosm to escape into—I had no particular desire to create a setting inspired by my Malaysian-Chinese heritage It honestly just didn’t occur to me that was even an option—growing up it seemed a requirement for any fantasy book published by the Western traditional publishing industry to be set in fictional worlds where the fantastic would have their attributes informed by various European cultures Fantastical creatures like hobbits would lead lives that reflected an idealised version of the rustic British life and fantastical lands like Narnia would be populated by Greek mythological creatures If Asian cultures ever appeared in these books they tended to appear in the form of the exoticised I didn’t have the language for all this when I was younger Concepts like colonialism or internalised racism were felt but not vocalised by people like me in those days I didn’t interrogate these feelings deeply as a child—I just read and wrote what I felt I had to read and write And these Western influences wouldn’t be that far removed from me either despite being miles away from Europe—Malaysia with its plethora of multicultural influences also bears the impact of once being a British colony our modern culture still frequently showcasing intersections between the English and the Asian But there remained a distance between what I felt I had to write and what my natural instincts wanted to write The books I read featured characters eating meals of bread and stew—and so I thought my characters would have to do the same Amorphous blobs of baked dough and slabs of vaguely described cheese would pass into my characters’ gullets—and I’d feel something was wrong while never quite being capable of putting my finger on what I realised what the issue was: I was trying to pull upon knowledge and experience that simply did not resonate with my soul What meaning did all those platters of bread and more bread have to someone whose diet mainly consisted of rice I started squeezing ingredients from my corner of the world into my drafts: kaya a little bit of joy and a sense of fun grew as I kept building my world infusing the fantastic with fragments of authenticity—fragments of home As I wrote and edited and revised The Serpent Called Mercy over the years more bits of all the Asian countries I’ve lived in started painting my world with their colours Four is symbolically associated with death in Chinese culture due to similar pronunciations—and so four the real-life wordplay origins being swapped instead for an in-world explanation that it was on the fourth day of creation that the first death of a mortal occurred A deep sense of spirituality and high levels of religiosity pervade Malaysia to this day—and so too do idiosyncratic religious beliefs influence my characters’ actions and behaviours and in the decisions they make throughout the novel But perhaps my favourite bit of home finding its way into the fantastic is how my world lights up their darkest nights: citizens of the city of Setgad carry around lanterns filled with hives of lightning-bees chubby little insects which luminescent bodies keep the city bright And it goes without saying that these lightning-bees are the fantastic cousins to the fireflies of Kuala Selangor whose warm yellow glow still light up my brain with the joy of nostalgic childhood memories of visiting my grandparents and eating snacks with them while sitting cross-legged on the floor of my stoic grandfather plucking fruits off a tree in his garden for my family to bring home—of my father taking me out to that river by the mangroves on a quiet night and watching insects become the only source of light for the next few minutes of my life The Serpent Called Mercy features the absurd and slightly unhinged corners of my brain—but it also features home in the nooks and crannies The Serpent Called Mercy is out now. Order your copy here By The Serpent Called Mercy might have struck me as a breath of fresh air a vigorous indictment of systematic economic and social disenfranchisement viewed through the lens of a friendship tested by ambition with extra gladiatorial beast-fighting combat I admire Roanne Lau’s debut novel for its studied subversion of all the more usual tropes of a competition-focused fantasy novel while finding that my appreciation never really rose above the intellectual Lythlet Tairel is a young woman from a poor background scraping out a living in a fantasy city that has an excuse for a social safety net that’s even worse than the USA’s and worker protections that are worse still In this unregulated and corrupt environment she and her best friend Desil—her only friend—are in significant debt to an unscrupulous moneylender (is there any other kind?) who enforces the terms of his compounding interest with beatings Desil used to make good money as a bare-knuckle fighter but gave it up from religious conviction: He does not want to be violent towards another person again after tolerating a long string of physically abusive employers has ended up in a disastrous lack of employment She’s not particularly accomplished at it they need much more than they’ve got doesn’t want to pay off the debt only to slide back down into more debt She wants the security to reach for happiness and plenty that a technically-illegal fighting ring is recruiting pairs of “conquessors” for its next series of matches This ancient bloodsport pits pairs of humans against terrible beasts that frequently have some kind of extra special power: “sun-cursed monsters,” as they are called and few survive it: The pairs of combatants are sworn together and neither is permitted to concede a match Combatants who win take a percentage of the match-organised betting this seems like the answer to most of her troubles—though in her initial ignorance she doesn’t realise how dangerous it is A significant proportion of The Serpent Called Mercy revolves around these combats and on Lythlet’s relationship with Dothilos and with Desil as their growing success in the games alters both interacts with a plant and unlocks a special power not used in many years and practically mythical that allows for her and Desil to survive and win instead of either a mentor or someone who wants only to use her deeply enmeshed in the corruption that undergirds most aspects of the state He comes to see in Lythlet someone whose potential reminds him of himself He plays on her ambition to turn her into someone he can use outside the games as well as within them while also acting in part in what he sincerely sees as her best interests Lythlet is sufficiently ambitious to find many of his arguments convincing but the pressure he exerts on her to comply makes her obstinate It also gives her cause to find reasons in her conscience and what I can only term a nascent sense of class solidarity as to why he is unpersuasive she is approached by political opponents of Dothilos’s likely patron who seek evidence of the elected head of government’s involvement with corruption: evidence that could put the brakes on said head of government’s prosecution of his opposition Lythlet and Desil’s success in combat strains their friendship as Desil struggles with his relationship to violence and worries for Lythlet’s safety and survival This strain becomes even sharper when Desil tries to force a forfeit—primarily for the sake of Lythlet’s safety—as he becomes convinced that they can fight on and win There are two paths before Lythlet: the path of ambition which will break her friendship and quite possibly all her remaining morals and the path that honours her friendship with Desil and her connections with fellow members of the city’s marginalised underclass and leads to more poverty and possibly to her death The Serpent Called Mercy is filled with the economic exploitation and abuse of people in poverty It sets itself in a city where the most powerful man is also the most corrupt where child murderers and the procurers of children are protected because of their usefulness to the wealthy where undocumented workers are worked to death on purpose and reporting child exploitation to the equivalent of the police results in employment blacklisting very much a book steeped in disillusionment with the current political and social moment in much of the Anglophone world with the trappings of democracy and justice rather than its substance and it wears its anger at injustice on its sleeve subverts many of the narrative expectations for a novel structured around a set of gladiatorial combats.) Were I younger but its outrage at the idea that the game is rigged from the start is wasted on me Lythlet’s eventual resolve to value mercy and connection moves me far more The Serpent Called Mercy is published by DAW The Reactor newsletter is the best way to catch up on the world of science fiction “The sky above the port was the color of television For compliance with applicable privacy laws: We chat with author Roanne Lau about The Serpent Called Mercy which is a Malaysian Chinese-inspired epic fantasy novel where a debt-ridden slumdog joins an illegal monster-fighting arena for some fast coin but quickly learns the most dangerous beasts are outside the ring—think The Witcher meets Squid Game and I’ve been lucky enough to live in Malaysia these countries have greatly influenced my book in big and little ways There are the broad strokes of Asian culture to be found in the interpersonal dynamics of my characters (how Lythlet interacts with her parents with the notion of filial piety weighing heavy on her mind for example); the general deference expected to be shown towards those deemed superior in society; the strong intertwinement of religion and spirituality with everyday life and how that affects a character’s behavior And there are the smaller ways these cultures have manifested in my book: the architectural designs and food ingredients largely pull from what I see and enjoy in Malaysia 4 being the number of death and 8 being a lucky number should be a familiar superstition to anyone acquainted with Chinese culture; even finer details like the gorgeous floral image that accompanies the prayers in the book imitating the sort of geometric floral art found in a lot of Malaysian designs reflect the deeply Asian spirit of THE SERPENT CALLED MERCY the notion of the natural wildlife being dangerous as hell and out to kill you had to come from somewhere my head was brimming with three core desires all at once I wanted to write a book about a deep but complicated friendship I also wanted to write a character-driven book about how someone—an underdog in every way possible—could transform dramatically over the course of a year thanks to fame and success and be forced to reckon with the conflict between her ambition and her morality I wanted to write a book that explored oppression and socioeconomic inequality portraying the way injustice can permeate society and stifle one’s potential And so THE SERPENT CALLED MERCY was birthed at the confluence of these various ideas me fitting the various puzzle pieces together in one novel I knew I wanted to show the progression of Lythlet’s character arc from ostracised belittled slumdog to triumphant city-renowned conquessor over the course of a year So it felt natural to create a bloodsport that’ll take place over a year on a monthly basis to show how her ascent into greatness transforms her persona gradually I liked the idea of keeping the games to an arena a closed environment where Lythlet and Desil would be forced to show both their individual characteristics and how they work together—all while vying for an incredible jackpot that’ll transform their lives a prize that’ll make them question exactly how much they’re willing to sacrifice to win it I’ve always been a fan of mystery novels growing up quick-thinking characters like Sherlock Holmes So I approached most of my battles with the same sort of mindset of wanting to see Lythlet not just engage in a straightforward punch-kick-dodge fight but needing to harness her wits to deduce a beast’s secrets See alsoQ&A: Katy Rose Pool, Author of ‘Garden of the Cursed’ My process for creating a beast usually started with a quick image popping up in my head of what it looks like one specific facet sticking out to me—for example the beast they fight in their second match appeared before my eyes as a creature with two heads and how can Lythlet use that knowledge to defeat it?” I’ve never seen friendship as a consolation prize or a lesser-than genre of relationship between a woman and a man Why should the absence of romantic attraction diminish the value of a meaningful connection I think a solid friendship with the right person—someone who sees you for who you truly are and accepts you—can be just as transformative and beautiful I’ve been lucky enough to have some lifelong friendships in my life and I’ve personally experienced the ups and downs that comes with that as well as sometimes growing apart and only coming back together some time in the future none of my friendships have been tested in a monster-fighting arena beautifully designed and comes with everything you need to engage your visitors and increase conversions by Women's Agenda | 2 months ago When Roanne Monte returned to Sydney during the pandemic after more than three decades abroad she did not expect to become a victim of stalking awaiting the arrival of her husband from New York when she found herself being surveilled by a security officer who worked for a co-working space across from her home “Practically every time I stepped out of my home he would be there in his car not wearing a uniform—effectively off duty just watching me,” she told Women’s Agenda but they could not help.“They asked me if I thought my life was in danger,” Monte said Monte described the ordeal as the lowest point in her life frequently going to bed at 5am and drinking coffee to stay alert.  “There was something about being so targeted all while seeing the stalker gloat by seeing me fearful and intimidated,” she said.  Monte vacillated from feeling severe fear to convincing herself that she would be okay she began to strategise a way to get evidence through video it seemed to be the only way the police was going to assist her.  with women being eight times more likely to be stalked by a man than a woman Monte turned her attention toward solving the broader problem of security gaps and studying the security industry Despite being told by a lawyer she had a feasible legal case Monte decided to focus her energy on solving the industry’s problems it would only be a win for me,” she explained I wanted to solve systemic security problems Monte studied Computer Science with a minor in Psychology at Harvard and has a Master’s at Cornell Law She began her career in software consulting “The most important lessons I took from both institutions were not just technical or legal but about how to solve real-world problems with precision and impact,” she said of her education In her effort to empower other victims of stalking she began creating the algorithms of how data can be contextualised a security expert specialising in Close Personal Protection (CPP) Monte began to sketch the architecture of a new platform which she would eventually call Ro&™.  Launched through the deep-tech company she co-founded, Armatec Global Ro&™ is the latest video intelligence program that can sift through hundreds of hours of footage to locate specific visual information at a fraction of the price for both consumers and businesses.  While traditional video surveillance requires constant monitoring and continuous human oversight the platform offers AI-native retrospective video intelligence that can analyse past video footage to extract critical insights without the need for users to watch hours of video thus eliminating common errors in manual surveillance induced by fatigue meaning users do not need to purchase expensive hardware to use the platform—they can use what they have provided their cameras are not outdated Users can unlock advanced video intelligence instantly pinpointing specific incidents after which they can review the result and then receive a report.  “Retrospective video intelligence analyses recorded video data to identify specific events “Our enterprise implementations involve a customised version of the platform that is specific to the requirements of an organisation’s use The company has managed to bring their AI-native enterprise-grade turnkey SaaS platform to market for less than $1 million the product is being used in twenty countries “Unlike traditional security solutions that retrofit AI onto legacy architectures Ro&™ was built from the ground up as an AI-native platform,” Monte said “This design ensures sophisticated retrospective video intelligence without requiring expensive compute resources or specialised technical expertise.” “Security technology has historically been costly With zero deployment time and a highly scalable AI-native architecture we enable organisations to access enterprise-grade security capabilities immediately—without costly infrastructure investments redefined for accessibility and capital efficiency.” Alan Ambron said that while AI adoption can be hindered by high infrastructure costs and scalability challenges which optimises processing efficiency.“Ro&™ delivers enterprise-grade analysis at a fraction of the cost of traditional AI-powered solutions,” he explained “This capital-efficient model allows us to scale globally without the heavy operational overhead that typically constrains AI security firms.” Monte and her team are now working to build more features into the product.  “I hope the [it] will empower individuals and businesses,” she said “I hope to democratise advanced tech that is usually only reserved for those who can afford it by Women's Agenda Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" Gina Rinehart has released a statement blaming “the left media” for the Liberal party’s election A Facebook group dedicated to buying, selling and swapping Saben bags has 23,000 members, with people from locales as far-reaching as Canada and the UK using it to get their hands on a second-hand item The community is one of Jacobson’s proudest brand milestones “I love seeing how my pieces are shifting around the world They’re going to Canada and they’re coming back to Australia 'The team have nailed it – it’s a strategy that everyone can understand.' A release shares that “Fans of the tense, dynamic action and battle-tested friendships like The Witcher and Squid Game will love The Serpent Called Mercy where a debt-ridden slumdog joins an illegal monster-fighting arena for some fast coin but quickly learns the most dangerous beasts are outside the ring.” Basically “What if an epic fantasy with already high stakes met even higher stakes and added heart-wrenching friendship on top?” It sounds guaranteed to have us both sobbing and at the edge of our seats And we could ask for little more from a book than that We also just have to say that the home of this novel adaptation should definitely be Netflix An even fuller synopsis of the book can be found at the end of this article Roanne Lau’s novel will feature asexual and neurodivergent representation Both asexuality and neurodivergence deserve more representation in media and books that feature representative characters should be championed Here is the full synopsis of The Serpent Called Mercy by Roanne Lau: Lythlet and her only friend Desil are shackled to a life of debt and poverty that she fears they will never escape. Desperate for money, they sign up as conquessors: arena combatants who fight sun-cursed beasts in the seedy underworld of the city. Match-master Dothilos is initially enamored of Desil’s brawling reputation, but after seeing Lythlet lead the pair to triumph with her quick cunning, he takes her under his wing, scorning Desil. Ambition takes root in Lythlet’s heart as a life of fame and wealth unfolds in her imagination. But Lythlet isn’t the only one out for coin and glory, and she soon finds herself playing an entirely different game—a game of politics and deception. As the cost of her ambition grows, she will have to decide if sacrificing her honor, and only friendship, is worth the chance to shape her own fortune. A whirlwind of blood-pounding battles as characters grapple with their choices in the face of wealth and financial security, The Serpent Called Mercy’s heart is the underlying, steadfast friendship between its protagonists. RELATED: 5 Queer-Led Pride Parties to Attend this Rainbow Month “This [Queer Safe Spaces PH] is the embodiment of the support that we needed when we were younger,” Roanne begins sharing we had nowhere to go and no one to help us navigate our sexuality I kept it all alone and almost lost my life to depression.” While there is now a remarkable surge of visibility and activism for the rainbow community Deviance from society’s established gender roles would lead to more prominent social condemnation and even legal consequences the efforts to represent and advocate for the LGBTQIA+ come in many forms: organizations fighting for the rights of the community; celebrities drawing upon the power of pride and allyship; more media representation in films and songs; and larger and more festive protests Roanne and Tina actively participate in these movements for their fellow members “As a closeted queer couple in the early days of our relationship we often felt unseen and uncertain about our future We lacked visible examples of other LGBTQ+ couples who were thriving and enjoying long-term stable relationships such as recognition for same-sex marriage and anti-discrimination laws left us feeling particularly exposed and vulnerable,” Roanne shares with MEGAStyle This particular absence led to these then-closeted queers now openly championing safe spaces for Filipino queer people.  when many were stranded in unsafe domestic areas Queer Safe Spaces PH expanded rapidly to 17,000 members But many great things began with small beginnings—the organization sprouted from a single a concept during a late-night talk between the couple “Then Facebook believed in our vision and provided funding to establish it as a full-fledged nonprofit organization but we are just getting started,” Roanne elaborates While the co-founders embraced the impact of digital frontier they also recognized the evident need for more than mere online support as the community grew “We realized that the challenges faced by queer individuals extend beyond the digital space There was a clear gap for physical safe spaces where people could gather and access resources and services in a more direct manner,” Carreon stresses Clearly, there’s no such thing as too much love in the queer sphere, as long as they get to celebrate this openly, loudly, and take the space they deserve both online and offline. Spearheading this lifelong advocacy is no easy task, but when the leaders care very deeply about the work and the people it touches, it breeds a passion and fulfillment fueled by the impact and positive change they impart on queer people’s lives.  However, it doesn’t come without its cons. When it comes to the most challenging part, Roanne expresses, “It’s managing funding and preventing burnout. Securing adequate funding to sustain our operations and expand our services is an ongoing challenge. It requires constant effort and creativity to secure resources while maintaining our commitment to serving the community effectively.” Despite these, the organization has made great strides in asserting LGBTQIA+ rights and welfare, and they don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Queer Prom, the second initiative of the organization’s project, will be happening on June 29 at SPACE at One Ayala. According to Queer Safe Spaces PH, this is “a second chance to experience a prom that embraces our authentic selves; where LGBTQ+ individuals could reclaim their prom experience on their own terms.” A Filipino rite of passage and an evening not to be missed, this is the opportunity for the community to dance the night away with fellow queers. “Traditional prom events often reinforce heteronormative standards, which makes LGBTQ+ individuals feel excluded or unable to fully express themselves. Queer Prom aims to combat that,” Roanne declares. Amidst the continuous fight for their rights, a Queer Prom celebrates the assurance that being queer isn’t the explosive, dramatic thing that society paints it out to be. Its aim is for events like such to become the norm. Until it becomes a tradition, for now, this is a step. “You can wear the outfit that makes you feel most comfortable, and you’re free to dance with the partner of your choice. It’s more than just a celebration; it’s owning our truth and forming connections with others who understand and support us,” Roanne assures. “As someone who understands the importance of representation and sense of belonging, I wanted to help create an event where LGBTQ+ individuals could feel seen, accepted, and celebrated for who they are.” View this post on InstagramA post shared by Queer Safe Spaces™ (@queersafespacesph) The bonus part of this event drag queens Salmo Nella and MC Black will be performing at this year’s Queer Prom their hope for everyone on the rainbow is: “a future where LGBTQ+ individuals have a dedicated space to gather The establishment of the Safe Space Center will be a groundbreaking milestone in our journey toward fostering inclusivity Photos and Featured Image: QUEER SAFE SPACES PH © 2025 MEGA is a published and presented by One Mega Group, Inc., a subsidiary of AGC Power Holdings Corp. about taste and why she’s pretty much over italic lettering How did you end up in New York?By way of Paris and Connecticut I grew up in Connecticut just 45 minutes away from the city I was always into drawing and the arts and I think Paris opened my eyes to the art world There was so much eye candy everywhere I went I got to take painting classes at the Louvre and at Beaux-Arts I had an art-history teacher who worked at Parsons in Paris and he was a big advocate of Parsons in general He told me that even if I moved back to Connecticut it wouldn’t be the end of the world I could always take art classes at Parsons in New York on the weekends or after school and I would take the train into the city for a nude painting class I decided Parsons was where I wanted to go to college and so I applied for early admission and got in And that’s when you got really into fashion.I had a lot of friends in the fashion department at Parsons who were starting their own companies — being able to art direct or design for them seemed really appealing I took all of these experimental publication-design classes that weren’t branding-related at all The job was all about big-picture thinking branding on a huge scale for corporate clients I was slightly concerned that I was out of my element but soon realized that it was the perfect foundation You have to think about the essence of the brand and figure out how to communicate that visually in a simple whether that’s a logo or website: Every touch-point needs to be consistent and clear I worked with them on rebranding and art [direction] for their photo shoots I soon realized that I could apply what I had learned to young independent fashion designers; I could create this big-picture branding and thinking helping them to sound established and allow them to stand out And that’s when you decided to open your own shop?I worked in corporate for about three and a half years I was named to Print Magazine’s “ 20 Under 30” list I started to get applause from the design community that I hadn’t gotten before All of a sudden I was being asked to do a lot of freelance work on the side having a full-time job and a lot of freelance work coming in I thought about going to some other design firms that were more fashion-centric but I realized that you could work from a laptop anywhere and I might as well do it now or not do it at all.” So I emailed everyone I had ever met in the past seven years in New York and just asked that if they had anything to send it my way It got to the point that I had so much work that couldn’t work from home anymore Refinery29 had started probably about five months before that and [co-founder] Piera Gelardi was a longtime acquaintance It was a large space for how much money I was spending That was a huge contribution to being able to start my own business on a shoestring budget and not have to ever borrow money or partner with anyone I don’t know a ton about the advertising world but what I do know is that there are a few conglomerates that own the majority of the agencies if one of the big branding firms wanted to acquire you would that be something you’d be into?I would consider it and their client base and what their motivations were I would still want to be able to control the types of projects that we work on — it’s the thing that keeps me passionate and excited at the computer most of the day — how does that all work?I used to sit and design all day long until it got to a point where I was managing so many designers that I just pulled away from the computer and started sitting next to them or sitting behind them and talking through designs I have such amazing designers working for me that I feel no need to sit down at the computer anymore and design myself If I’m going to sit down at the computer and do anything it might be to create a mood board to visually explain what I’m looking for And my designers have come to understand what I am looking for as well I’m in a lot of client meetings presenting work A lot of my time right now is spent talking about interactive design and user experience and fielding a lot of request for e-commerce design The fashion industry has shifted very quickly over the last five years I’d say five years ago a lot of people were hesitant to get their businesses online and now it’s sort of their first priority in terms of their marketing and branding side of their business as opposed to rebranding or look-book design What do you think people come to you for aesthetically What are your signatures? An elevated fashion look that isn’t too austere and unapproachable but it’s contemporary without being too minimal We’re working with brands that really want to create one thread throughout all of their marketing materials and really want to evolve that over the years but not stray too far from it I think that our look is somewhat European as well I’m sure that they can’t afford the same budgets that Nike or a similar company could afford. It’s funny that you bring up Nike We have other clients of that size and caliber that we work with to allow us to bring on smaller I think that’s really the lifeblood of the studio: being able to work with smaller designers in tandem with larger corporate clients and apply the same level of design to both There seem to be some prevalent trends in design right now What were you feeling two or three years ago that is starting to go stale?I mean in terms of treatments of text I think that we really exhausted the italic-serif typeface I think that we need to maybe take a little break from it for a while and I’m almost starting to get tired of that as well But it’s hard not to love that too: simple but maybe it hasn’t been done for their industry yet Now I’m working with clients in the hospitality industry and the interior-design industry What’s the most challenging part of all of this Has there been a moment over the past eight years when you’ve just wanted to call it a day?I think that my biggest challenges have been just coming to terms with the fact that I am a business owner I don’t necessarily get the luxury of being a creative director eight hours a day it really excites me to be a business owner there are things that come up that can really bring you great stress and challenge you and make you feel like Did I sign up to spend 15 hours a month being a human-resources person or to work with an accountant or a bookkeeper I don’t think that I would be as excited to get up every day if it weren’t this challenging White; Manicure: Casandra Lamar using Revlon at Factory morning at Episcopal Church Home after a brief battle with cancer Victor volunteered for many arts organizations for more than 50 years, including the Kentucky Art and Craft Foundation (before it became the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft) the Kentucky Opera, StageOne Family Theatre, the Kentucky School of Art and the Kentucky Arts Council But it was at Actors Theatre where she spent most of her volunteer time and got to know the actors Artistic Director Les Waters called her "a driving force in the history and development of all our work at Actors Theatre," and dedicated this year’s Review ► New play captures hearts of women | Review Victor was married to Karl "Buzz" Victor Jr. which merged with Theatre of Louisville and led him to be a fellow founder of Actors Theatre “theater was the fabric of the family” and her mother wanted to do as much as she could to enhance the experience of going to the theater from helping create a restaurant at the theater to enlivening the theater’s corridors with artwork “I truly think she got as much out of it as she put into it and she made life-long friends in the process,” said Gwenn Victor of Venice Beach who once directed theater and now coaches actors for television shows “She was a champion for the city of Louisville in so many ways,” said Victor’s son who added that he learned a lot through her involvement in activities hosting foreign diplomats in Louisville during the 1970s and ‘80s who was a member of the resident company from 1969 to 2005 described Victor as “an extraordinary” human being “She was an amazing force for making good and positive connection,” O’Brien said recalled seeing Victor at curtain calls on opening night performances “I can’t imagine anyone more passionate about Actors Theatre," she said "That was on display every opening night when she would be the first to leap to her feet and applaud the performance with a gusto far bigger than her tiny frame." ► 'Recent Alien Abductions' She even helped persevere the annual African American Art Exhibition which was started in 1979 by a host of local black artists after it had gone on hiatus for several years and didn’t have a home “She was a valiant person to fill that place up with art and make a statement and take it upon herself to work with me and other to get the African-American show back together She kept it going," said artist Ed Hamilton She helped organize the Heritage Weekends on the Belvedere that were a social mainstay of Louisville during the 1970s. In the 1980s, she served on the board of the Cathedral Heritage Foundation which later became the Center for Interfaith Relations, which organizes the annual Festival of Faiths Center for Interfaith Relations board chair Turney P Berry called her a “tireless volunteer” while its founder and philanthropist Christy Brown called Victor “deeply proud” of her family’s Jewish heritage “She understood that to overcome prejudice violence and misunderstanding in the communities of our world we must have all aspects of our community working together as many faiths with one heart in common action,” Brown said Reach reporter Elizabeth Kramer at 502-582-4682 and ekramer@courier-journal.com Follow her on Twitter @arts_bureau and on Facebook at Elizabeth Kramer - Arts Writer her core research focuses on what she calls ‘sustainable humanity’ The ancient city of Roanne straddles the Loire River on France’s so-called Holiday Route  The city is often bypassed by visitors on their way from Paris to the south anxious to reach the land of Van Gogh and Cezanne and bask on the Riviera beaches a recent trip to Roanne and the surrounding bucolic region showed me what I had been missing Wine in the Cote RoannaisMany of the vineyards and wineries of the Cote Roannais are found north of the city of Roanne near villages and towns that reflect the presence of the monks who were predominant there in the Middle Ages a Benedictine church and a Franciscan cloister visit the fascinating silk museum and its shop and then take time for  a leisurely lunch at the Restaurant Relais de L’Abbaye de Charlieu While sipping Cote Roannais wine and nibbling housemade foie gras terrine visitors can watch the huge white Charolais cattle grazing across the road Wandering among the narrow streets of medieval villages such as Ambierle strolling along the banks of the Saint Jean-Saint Maurice sur Loire or hiking in the Monts de la Madeleine are other special attractions in the Roanne region travelers will find that attention to food and wine Copyright © 2025 Northstar Travel Media, LLC. center’s annual newsletter I worried that I would have to choose between studying English literature and Latin American literature I discovered comparative literature in the course catalogue and immediately knew it was for me eventually landing on Hindi and Urdu as the ones I wanted to stick with I became increasingly interested in how those same passions were shared by many of the authors I studied.  I am currently in the process of finishing a book about the way that authors from India and Pakistan became interested in literature from Latin America and how it impacted their own writing and the field of South Asian letters It was through this interaction that South Asian authors became world-famous in their own right A lot of the well-known authors and styles we associate with contemporary South Asian writing as well as the way that this writing circulated in global markets it's not as if South Asian authors used Latin American writing instrumentally Quite the opposite: these authors were deeply committed to the idea of Latin America as a space of utopian futurity and especially of non-Anglophone literary flourishing That makes the market success of their Anglophone writing and the centrality of Latin-American influenced South Asian writing to that field Next year in the fall I will teach the intro to disability studies class on disability and technology as well as the third part of the English historical series, Modernism Goes Global In the spring I will teach a course on Stories at the Border: Geography and Genreabout literature that has to do with border conflicts You might assume these classes will not have South Asian material in them my whole job as an English professor is to reveal the centrality of cultural production in the Global South to what we think of as traditionally northern There has been this general push to take South Asian studies out of its traditional framework as an "area studies" field and think about its connection to other regional configurations: connections to Africa via the Indian ocean and … the enduring relationship to the location of formal colonial power in Europe I am interrogating what we think of as the salient geographies the expected geographies through which South Asia reaches the wider world I am arguing for the centrality of a connection that was not explained by those earlier geographic connections I am interested in the difference between national/area contexts (India and South Asia) and regional ones (Bihar) the way that transnational circulation of cultural products from India sometimes obscures their investment in regionality and what we might see when we dig back into that I am furthering a very old strength of South Asian studies There is not an intuitive link between the different projects I work on; I want to keep surprising myself I taught a really fun survey course this spring about The Indian Novel where you have to kind of give people what they expect—the greatest hits but then I discovered that you can find some of the biggest surprises when you and your students think you know exactly where you're going And my students constantly surprise me with their talents and interests That is what's so fun about teaching: I can prepare as much as I want but the classroom always brings its own dynamic I guess I want my students and my readers to open themselves to the unknown as opposed to this version of scholarship as mastery This article is part of a series of interviews with recently hired Stanford faculty with expertise in South Asia and pandemic and zeroed in on her favorite not-kitschy Airbnb Here she shares her favorite vintage furniture spots and the retro-ish swimsuits she made sure to pack which adds an hour or more onto what’s normally an easy hour-and-45-minute drive There’s less traffic than before the pandemic New Yorkers can fly direct into Palm Springs International Airport instead of LAX which is totally worth it if you’re just planning on being in Palm Springs Spanish Colonial–revival hotel that was built in 1922 We also like Ingleside because Melvyn’s We had Friday night dinner in one of the private rooms We got dressed up and did an Old Hollywood glamour theme; no one went over-the-top Marilyn Monroe but we put on real dresses with low necklines and structured sleeves for the first time since COVID is it’s a steakhouse — just get yourself a martini and a porterhouse When we went in April the pianist was outside The Ingleside also has a fire pit by the pool so after dinner we got drinks from the bar and sat around the fire this classic brunch spot that’s been around forever a place to get a stack of pancakes or waffles For a whole evening you sit in an earthen hot tub and watch the sunset behind the mountains After dinner we danced by the pool to everything from Nancy Sinatra to Roxy Music and people jumped in the pool — or got thrown in to warm everyone up after they came out of the pool If you’re interested in the architecture, Modernism Week usually happens once a year in the spring but I like to bike around and see the homes: There’s the 1962 steel Wexler house (290 East Simms Road) and the Bob Hope house by John Lautner (2466 Southridge Dr.) up on a hill After that, head to Indian Canyons. It’s a natural oasis with waterfalls where you can go swimming. It’s less of a hike and more of a rigorous walk to get there, but wear sneakers and clothes as if you’re hiking. Pack a picnic lunch from On the Mark (111 N Palm Canyon Dr #155) a meat-and-cheese provisions shop in town that makes sandwiches and sells guacamole and olives and stuff You can go midday because there are tons of palm trees — natural ones not imported or planted ones — that cut the heat Keep your camera handy — when I was there we saw a huge family of peninsular bighorn sheep Workshop Kitchen and Bar (800 N Palm Canyon Dr.) is an ideal Sunday evening dinner The restaurant was built in an old movie theater The Coleman Farms lettuces is just a great salad The bar menu also has beautiful cocktails; I had the M-80 last time you’ve already skipped the traffic driving back to Los Angeles This was my interpretation of “old Hollywood glamour” for dinner at Melvyn’s and the necklace to go with the dress’s low-cut neckline This is the shape of the dress I wore on the second night for the Mexican-Yola birthday dinner feast one in the pink gingham and one in the color-blocked print because in Palm Springs you basically spend the day in the pool These are super comfortable; you can definitely go on a walk around town [Editor’s note: Roanne has these slides in black, but that color is currently sold out. Marlow has been with NACS for about 16 years and started her career in elementary education teaching at Hickory Center in the early 2000s — not long after the school first opened. “It’s kind of like going back home even though I’m going to miss my middle schoolers,” Marlow said during Monday night’s school board meeting. “I enjoy them a lot but I think elementary is where I need to be, so I’m really excited for this opportunity.” Marlow has worked at Carroll Middle School for the past three years — her first two as the dean of students, and the last year as one of two assistant principals. “It’s definitely going to be a different challenge than what I’ve been doing, but it’s always nice to take on a new and bigger challenge, so that’s exciting too,” she said. Johanningsmeier will leave her post at Hickory Center to replace current Special Education Director Jada Conner, who announced her retirement earlier this year. • The school board had its second hearing for a multimillion-dollar campus redesign project that includes building a new football and track complex, as well as relocating and updating several other athletics and band facilities. There were no public comments for or against the project. Two NACS parents voiced their approval of the project during the first public hearing earlier this month.
