Volume 8 - 2020 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fphy.2020.625275 This article is part of the Research TopicAdvanced fabrication technologies for semiconductor radiation detectors View all 13 articles 3D pixel sensors aimed at the upgrades of the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the High Luminosity LHC have small pixel size and pretty dense layouts modified 3D designs with small pixel size and trenched electrodes in place of columnar electrodes are being developed to optimize the pixel timing performance in view of the LHCb upgrade The fabrication of these advanced 3D pixels is challenging from the lithographical point of view This motivated the use of stepper lithography at Fondazione Bruno Kessler in place of a standard mask aligner The small minimum feature size and high alignment accuracy of stepper allow a good definition of the sensor geometries also in the most critical layouts so that a higher fabrication yield can be obtained we will present the main design and technological issues and discuss their impact on the electrical characteristics of 3D pixel sensors of different geometries the fabrication of 3D pixels is becoming more challenging not only for the etching of vertical electrodes which relies on the Deep Reactive Ion Etching (DRIE) process but also from the lithographical point of view with pretty dense layouts calling for small minimum feature sizes and high alignment accuracy which have been the workhorse for radiation sensor fabrication in most laboratories for decades show some clear limitations in their performance with detrimental effects on the device quality and on the production yield This motivated the choice to switch to a step and repeat lithography equipment (so called stepper) for the development of the latest generations of 3D pixels at Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) we will present the main design and technological issues of these advanced 3D pixels and discuss in particular the impact of the lithography on the electrical characteristics of different 3D pixels Results relevant to small-pitch 3D pixels with columnar electrodes and to the first prototypes of 3D pixels with trenched electrodes will be reported The comparison between the fabrication yield of devices obtained with mask aligner and stepper emphasizes the advantages provided by the latter in case of very dense layouts This section includes a description of the devices and of their fabrication process with emphasis on the aspects relevant to lithography the measurement setup used for the electrical characterization is presented Figure 1 shows the schematic cross-section of a 3D pixel developed at FBK with such an approach high-resistivity (Float Zone) wafer of the desired thickness (130 and 150 μm were used for the batches reported in this paper) directly bonded to a p-type As an alternative to these so-called Si-Si substrates also Silicon On Insulator (SOI) substrates Schematic cross-section of 3D small-pitch pixels made at FBK on Si-Si substrates with a single-sided technology (not to scale) The same process is also used for 3D trenched electrodes Both types of columns are doped by thermal diffusion and filled (at least partially) with poly-Si also leaving small poly-Si extrusions at the column opening (so called “caps”) Several layers of tetra-ethyl-ortho-silicate (TEOS) oxide are deposited to protect the column openings Contact holes are etched through the upper TEOS layer to make contacts between the metal and the readout column on the poly-Si caps (this is not required for the bias columns that are biased from the back side) An oxide-nitride passivation layer is deposited over the metal and openings for the bump bonding pads are defined A temporary metal layer is finally deposited to allow for electrical tests on the pixels and is removed afterward (more details on the temporary metal are found in “Electrical Measurement Setup” section) The same technological approach was adopted at FBK for the fabrication of 3D pixels with trenched electrodes on Si-Si substrates with proper tailoring of the DRIE etching recipes as required by the different geometries of trenched electrodes Both pixel geometries will finally be used to instrument different regions (50 × 50 μm2 in the flat barrel and 25 × 100 μm2 in the rings) of the innermost pixel layer (Layer 0) of the new ATLAS Tracking System (ITk) these 3D pixels are still among the options under consideration but a final decision has not yet been made besides the technological complications that will be detailed in the following Conceptual design of small-pitch 3D pixels for the ATLAS and CMS upgrades at HL-LHC also indicating the values of the inter-electrode distance L (A) 50 × 50–1E; (B) 25 × 100–1E; (C) 25 × 100–2E (D) 25 × 100–2E (V-ear); (E) 25 × 100–2E (H-ear) Note that for all pixel types a slim-edge (150-μm wide, compliant with the ATLAS ITk specification) termination was designed, based on multiple rows of bias columns that ensure the confinement of the depletion region spreading from the outermost junction columns within a short distance, so that it does not reach the highly damaged cut region [4] and layout (right) of a 3D pixel with trenched electrodes Both the first two batches were made using mask aligner lithography Since the electrical yield obtained for the 25 × 100−2Ε pixels in batch 2 was not satisfactory it was decided to use the stepper lithography in batch 3 with a wafer layout entirely dedicated to 3D pixels compatible with the RD53A ROC and test structures Figure 5 shows the photographs of two processed wafers from batch 2 and batch 3, whereas Table 1 summarizes the main information on the two batches Note that both Si-Si and SOI wafers of 130 μm active thickness were used in batch 2 whereas Si-Si of 150 μm active thickness (the substrate of choice for the innermost layers of both the ATLAS and CMS trackers at HL-LHC) were used in batch 3 Photograph of processed wafers from batch 2 (left) and batch 3 (right): 18 RD53A-compabile sensors are present in a wafer from batch 2 Overview of FBK 3D small-pitch pixel batches 2 and 3 aimed at ATLAS and CMS upgrades at HL-LHC Better resolution can be achieved by placing the mask in direct contact with the wafer at the expense of a higher probability of inducing defects from wafer to wafer due to the direct contact with the mask The alignment accuracy is of the order of a few micrometers These figures are normally adequate for most radiation sensor designs where the minimum feature sizes are not very small a mask aligner has been used at FBK for 3D sensor fabrication since 2005 also exploiting the double-side alignment system for double-sided 3D sensor technologies Nevertheless, as can be seen in Figure 3C–E the layout of the new 25 × 100−2Ε 3D pixels is really dense and involves very small feature sizes in particular for the minimum distance between the bump bonding pad and the bias columns Its fabrication requires a resolution and an alignment accuracy that a mask aligner cannot achieve with good process reliability calling for a better lithography equipment At FBK a stepper is available having a minimum feature size of 350 nm and an alignment accuracy of 80 nm It was therefore possible to use it in order to assess the feasibility of fabricating 3D pixels with such a critical layout in view of a possible production In a stepper mask, called reticle, the device dimensions are magnified (e.g., 5X) and a complex optical focusing system is used to project the reticle image to wafer level [24] The big distance between reticle and wafer eliminates the defects caused by the small gap or the direct contact between the mask and the wafer in a mask aligner A related advantage is that the optical inspection of wafers after each lithography which is normally a very important and time-consuming step for operators with mask aligners one peculiar aspect is the use of thick photoresist layers to serve also as a masking material (on top of the oxide) during the Deep Reactive Ion Etching process A thick photoresist degrades the lithography resolution with mask aligner so that the desired resolution can be achieved at the interface between photoresist and oxide thus allowing for a better definition of the columnar electrode openings the number of reticles was largely reduced at the expense of a complication in the stepper programming with a very high number of “step and repeat” operations this sometimes caused an accidental malfunctioning of the stepper so that the lithography of some layers had to be repeated several times the quality of the batch 3 was finally not as good as potentially achievable with a stepper the advantages in terms of resolution and alignment accuracy were evident Example of reticle layout and exposure strategy used with stepper in batch 3 more aggressive layout rules can be used and be preserved in the real device implementation: in particular it can be seen that the metal of the bump pad remains at a safety distance from the poly-Si cap of the p+ columns Layout details and micrographs of 25 × 100–2E 3D pixels fabricated at FBK with (A) mask aligner (also showing temporary metal strips) The very good pattern definition and alignment accuracy achieved with stepper lithography can also be appreciated from Figure 8, where a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) image of the 25 × 100– 2E pixels of Figure 3D (version with vertical ear) is shown All layout details are preserved: in particular in the critical region of bump pads all structures are clearly separated FIGURE 8. A SEM micrograph of a group of pixels of the type shown in Figure 4 is reported in Figure 9 showing details of the trenches and of surface topography: in particular it can be seen that the bump pads (shorted by temporary metal in the picture) are well separated from the poly-Si cap at the opening of the bias trench FIGURE 9. the strip currents and sensors are sorted according to the leakage current specifications for the ITk 3D pixels • depletion voltage Vdepl<10 V • breakdown voltage larger than the operation voltage Vop = Vdepl+20 V • leakage current at operation voltage I(Vop) < 2.5 μA/cm2 The depletion voltage is measured from the capacitance-voltage curves of test diodes the upper limit for depletion voltage was considered setting Vop at 30 V and comparing the relative current to the specification threshold Note that if the current respects the specification also the breakdown voltage condition is practically assessed It can be seen that about one half of these sensors are functional with low leakage currents and breakdown voltage larger than 50 V (the maximum bias applied in the test) whereas the others either show early breakdown or a smooth raise in the curves finally leading to high leakage values I–V curves of 25 × 100–2E 3D pixels from batch 3: (A) currents of all strips (3,840 pixels each) in an individual sensor and (B) total currents of all sensors in Wafer 38 a significant fraction of the 25 × 100-2E strips have currents above the specification in batch 2 and with obvious impact on the geometry would be feasible at FBK with an acceptable yield Summary of the wafer electrical yield for all RD53A-compatible 3D pixel sensors from batches 2 and 3 (A) I–V curves of all 3D- advanced 3D pixel sensors at FBK we have started to use stepper lithography in place of mask aligner to profit from the much better definition of critical layout details it can provide Despite the problems occurred during the fabrication of the first stepper batch (batch 3) due to the choice to accommodate many design variants and the related complication in the exposure strategy The yield for the critical 25 × 100–2E geometry was largely improved (roughly doubled) with respect to the previous batch using mask aligner (batch 2) the yields for the other non-critical geometries 50 × 50–1E and 25 × 100–1E remained roughly the same that is good enough considering the complex fabrication technology of 3D sensors and the very large density of columnar electrodes involved in small-pitch designs These results confirm that stepper is a viable solution for the production of advanced small-pitch 3D sensors Two batches of small-pitch 3D sensors are currently being fabricated at FBK using a simplified approach to expose in a single shot the sensors and test structures present in a reticle so as to further improve the yield and the wafer-to-wafer uniformity we have also successfully produced 3D-Trenched Electrode pixel sensors for the first time showing very low leakage current and high breakdown voltage A second batch with improved layout is currently being fabricated The raw bending down is still difficult for me But I’ve managed to establish a fair quality of life — my  new normal — recovering physically even though after months without medications and treatments I’ve gone from “Life is OK” to “Life will be OK,” from treading water to swimming ashore deliberately get rid of the tension you’ve stored in your body — what you hold in your shoulders for example — by feeling every part of your body “The ability to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions”; that’s the dictionary definition I prefer to define resilience with my life I’ve managed living with multiple myeloma for more than two and a half years — far longer than the seven to eight months my doctors said my recovery would take I managed despite there being days — especially during winter as weather affects resilience — when I didn’t want to do a thing when I could barely sustain a forward-looking attitude I’ve learned to enjoy my mobility moving to and around different environments and spaces I am able to savor the outdoors; I walk around the city with my rollator I am able to climb two flights of stairs to my beautiful office and visit the Hudson Yards complex of shops and art that is down the street from where I live I’m even able to take short trips to the beach and the countryside I said earlier that I’ve gone from treading water to swimming ashore healing qualities of healthful organic food Something that incorporates the importance of feeling and showing gratitude and the importance of framing what is happening in our lives with words that lift our spirits I learned that there are four components to living through my recent challenges: Showing Gratitude I credit my mother for demonstrating the power of appreciating the world around us and expressing gratitude to others She had one lung removed when she was very young due to tuberculosis She was nearly killed by a car that plowed into a playground of children near her home She had to ask permission from her future mother-in-law to marry into the Chin family because of class differences Her doctors said that she would never have a family she was known throughout her life as a kind She enjoyed the accomplishments of her four children My own resilience was tested during interminable waits for transportation to the hospital or home and the agonizing pain of going over potholes while driving back and forth It was tested by medications that affected my bodily functions and by living with aides in our apartment 24-7 I found reasons to be grateful and to express my gratitude with a word or smile to my nurses and the EMT and paramedic teams who picked me up by stretcher ambulance for my twice weekly infusions Everyone would comment that it was a pleasure to take care of me I think that’s because I was feeling and showing honest appreciation and gratitude for the care they gave me Knowing When to Switch Out of Survival Mode For the first year or so of treatment I used all my energy to stay in the present and did only what I needed to do to get through each day I say “of course” because feng shui means wind and water are associated with the balance of good health But it also symbolizes the elements of weather So it kind of makes sense that when I couldn’t go outside when it was dark and cold feng shui solutions had little meaning as we tried to accommodate a large hospital bed and more in a small New York City apartment a feng shui “cure”: a handmade quilt titled “Faces.” I knew it had to be hung in my office Even though I could not physically go to my office I felt strongly that this inspirational artwork would welcome lots of helpful people and symbolize my presence in the office realizing that I’m capable of more than surviving the quilt had indeed welcomed many supportive people into my life Staying Connected to a Passion I love to travel and have circled the world several times travel wasn’t possible when I was essentially bedridden But I didn’t want to grieve this loss and the way it had invigorated my life That’s when I realized that my mobile phone could be my lifeline to the outer world helping me maintain connections with family I posted beautiful pictures from around the world It was my way to include and feel included as I checked the number of likes for each post was drawn to my armchair travels as she heard about my posts from people who saw them Realizing Words Matter In the world of multiple myeloma support groups and conferences, conversations are filled with the language of chemotherapy, toxicology, cancer, and relapse. It was both enlightening and depressing to listen to my fellow multiple myeloma warriors describe their journeys. Fighting this underlying and overwhelming depression, I learned to use different words to describe the chemo, calling them “healing elixirs.” I blessed all my healing elixirs by ringing my Tibetan bells and quietly chanting the mantra “Om mani padme hum” with the intention of inviting only the benefits of the medicine into my body. These properties, in addition to the ability to cure rapidly and to form rigid thermoplastics with excellent adhesion with the substrates, make cyanoacrylates the most widely used adhesive in both industrial and structural applications (Petrie, 2007; Irving, 1990) The study underlined that CA was successfully delivered into the crack and transported toward the crack tip by capillary forces which also resulted in good penetration into the whole micro-cracked region an apparent enhancement of the post-healed beam properties the capillary meniscus contact angles of both healing agents on different substrates (i.e. saturated concrete and unsaturated concrete) was evaluated it was shown that the flow behavior of both healing agents in a closed channel conformed closely to Poiseuille’s law it was found that CA’s viscosity increased over the 40-min period that it was exposed to a cementitious environment The aim of the work reported in this paper was to develop a modified CA with enhanced performance that satisfies the healing agent requirements for concrete technologies; namely 1) the ability to remain liquid and chemically stable for a long time; 2) the ability to prevent any chemical interactions with the carriers that can change their mechanical properties; 3) the ability to react with the cementitious matrix - when released–and to form compatible compounds The development of bond strengths at different curing durations (7–21 day) were evaluated and compared with those produced with the commercial 2-ethyl cyanoacrylate control the degree of wetting was evaluated using contact angle measurements - Modified Ethyl Cyanoacrylate (n-CA) provides an overview of a series of investigations concerning the chemical formulation of modified cyanoacrylate (n-CA) Several candidate formulations were studied that were selected on the basis of their ability to act as retarder of the starting CA monomer and their negligible/low reactivity Different proportions of the chosen components were considered using longevity tests conducted on 3D printed PLA polymer units - Experimental Materials and Methods describes a set of experiments which determined the physical-chemical and mechanical properties of four n-CA formulations The bond strength to cementitious substrates and the degree of cure over time (7–21 days) were evaluated by means of a pull-off test The interaction of the n-CA formulations with a cementitious surface was evaluated using the sessile drop technique (contact angle measurements) - Section 4 reports a series of tests conducted to characterize the PLA polymer used to manufacture the mini vascular network units DSC and TGA analysis were performed on fragments collected from the filament roll before the printing phase and from the TETs immediately after printing The results of the NMR analysis carried out on a selected formulation are also presented In order to meet the encapsulation process requirements such as the ability to remain liquid for a long period of time coupled with the ability to prevent any chemical interactions with the carriers the design of the n-CA formulation was primarily focused on reducing the time of curing introducing components (solvents) that are chemically compatible with the PLA while maintaining good bond properties with the cementitious substrate selected organic acids are good candidates as polymerization retarders since they protonate water and all bases eventually within the reaction solution It is noteworthy that a small quantity of a base can initiate the CA polymerization moreover the ionic polymerization of CA may also take place via radical initiation hydroquinone is present in commercial CA to stabilize such a reagent The first prerequisite of the solvent is the ability to solubilize the cyanoacrylate whilst being inert toward PLA. Table 1 reports selected examples concerning the solubility of CA and PLA in some solvents (at 25°C) The solubility test was prolonged for 20hrs of treatment Three solvents fulfilled the preliminary requirements the ability to act as solvent of the starting 2-ethyl cyanoacrylate monomer but not of the PLA: styrene Styrene is widely recognized as a mutagen and thus potentially carcinogenic (Quartarone et al., 2014) as such its inclusion in the formulations is not recommended although it will be included here for completeness Due to concerns regarding the interaction of acetic acid with the highly alkaline nature of the hydration reactions of the cementitious matrix the only remaining candidate solvent is the acrylic acid Several formulations have been studied, by adding the chosen solvents in different proportions and in some cases with the addition of benzoylhydroperoxide as a standard initiator for radical polymerization (Odian, 2004), as reported in Table 2 Polymerization time and aspect of different formulations All the formulations containing the acrylic acid The reaction takes place at room temperature (25°C) and it is activated without the need for mechanical agitation When the formulation containing the initiator (benzoylhydroperoxide) is encapsulated into the 3D printed units the cyanoacrylate monomer is inherently less stable The addition of an initiator such as the benzoylhydroperoxide into the concrete mix design would introduce a light toxicity into the whole matrix the long-term stability of hydroperoxides is not guaranteed in a highly alkaline medium such as a cementitious matrix The same can be said of polymerization initiators in general the use of the radical initiator allows a comparison with a polymer whose monomer conversion is optimal under the condition investigated The detailed description and impact of the inclusion of the initiator into the concrete mix design are the subject of future research The mixture containing CA/AA colored by 1-Nitro-anthraquinone showed a significant inhibition of the spontaneous polymerization and the compound maintained the same practical flow capabilities for 28 days after which time the increased viscosity of the compound impedes the release of the compound from the PLA capsules This suggests the formulation of n-CA might be encapsulated in PLA networks with good stability where the state of CA is classified as liquid (L); partially solid with a liquid center and solid annulus (s/L); and solid in all tubes (s) Longevity test of n-CA adhesives in clear PLA Formulations containing PC60 remained in a liquid state for longer than the other CA candidates providing evidence of an ability to remain liquid after 3 days in all the formulations considered; however the curing process of the adhesive mixture containing this CA seemed to be initiated and the viscosity of mixture at the end of the testing time was greater than that at the beginning no significant alterations of the PLA were visible after three days This implies that 3D printed MVNs using clear PLA and filled with formulations containing PC60 have the potential to survive within the concrete matrix for at least three days before possible reactions between the adhesives and PLA take place It is for this reason that PC60 was taken forward for further investigation in the experimental investigation steel bolts placed and sealed with the plasticine (B) Once the adhesive formulations had sufficiently cured, the samples were pulled apart at a rate of 0.05 mm/s, using a servo-hydraulic universal machine with a load cell capacity of 100 kN, and observations made regarding their modes of failure. The testing arrangement and a sample under testing can be seen in Figures 2A,B respectively Cement mortar compressive strength variation with time The surfaces were lightly sanded in order to reduce the influence of the demoulding oil and to remove any geometric irregularities A thin layer of adhesive was placed on one side of the cubes using a 1 ml plastic pipette the average quantity of adhesive was 0.103 g (CoV 9%) The only load applied to the vertically arranged block assembly prior to testing was the self-weight of the upper block The bond strength was calculated from the maximum force during the tension test carried to rupture and the contact cross-sectional area of the specimens (See Experimental Results The commercial Ethyl Cyanoacrylate - Procure PC60 - was chosen as the CA component (see n-CA Longevity Within 3D Printed Polylactide Acid Capsules). The properties of the CA, as reported in the datasheet, are given in Table 5 Four formulations containing a commercial monomer 2-ethyl cyanoacrylate (CA) acrylic acid (AA) and nitro-anthraquinone (nAq) were prepared by mixing the components CA:AC:nAq in the ratios x:1:0.02 All the formulations were prepared at room temperature by the slow addition of the AA and the nAq at the prescribed concentrations To facilitate the mixing of the chemical compounds a polyurethane small tube was used to gently stir the mixture The bond strength was calculated from the maximum force during the tension test carried to rupture and the contact cross-sectional area of the specimens (See section 4.2) The influence of the CA/AA proportion in the four formulations on the contact angle (θc) was examined via the sessile drop technique. The substrate was the open cast face of a cement mortar cube manufactured as described above for the pull-off test. The sessile drop technique, a schematic of which is shown in Figure 4 was performed using a drop volume of 10 μL in which detail A and B shows the tensiometer setup and a typical microscope image of sessile drop with the baseline and drop profile modeled by the software (light gray lines) respectively with the aim to characterize the main properties of the proposed formulations and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses were carried out on polymer samples exposed to laboratory air for 1 week of curing DSC and TGA analyses were conducted in a Linseis PTA ST1000 under nitrogen flow of 100 ml min−1 with a temperature ramp of 10°C min −1 from 30 to 250°C or 400°C depending on the type of measurement and polymer In order to characterize the n-AC polymers and to better understand the interaction between CA and AA 1H NMR measurements were performed at room temperature on a Brucker Avance 400 II spectrometer operating at 400MHz TGA and NMR techniques only allows the verification of relatively high proportions of different species in the polymer (at least 2–5%) the n-CA formulation of 1:1 by weight of CA/AA was employed to help amplify the differences between the pure CA and the proposed formulations The average bond strengths calculated from the maximum force during the tension test and the bonded cross-sectional area of the mortar cubes are summarized in Table 7 Pull off test results performed on samples with sanded surfaces In all the samples bonded with the unmodified commercial CA (control specimens), failure occurred in the concrete sample at the level of the bolt head (See Figure 5A This suggests that the bonded material had a higher tensile strength than the mortar Sample bonded with the unmodified commercial CA: failure occurred in the concrete sample at the level of the bolt head (A); bonded cross -section of the samples after testing (B) Failure occurred at the bonded surface in all remaining tests that employed n-CA formulations. The addition of the AA, irrespective of the proportion, appears to have retarded the polymerization reactions by at least three days. Before this time none of the n-CA formulations had cured sufficiently to allow meaningful bond strengths to be determined. Moreover, a general reduction in bond stress occurs with the addition of AA. As can be seen in Figure 5B a significant percentage of the n-CA applied to the surfaces appears to have been absorbed into the sample with only a proportion of the cross-section being fully bonded The proportion of area bonded (b) was measured after each test using digital images of the failed surfaces This proportion was used to calculate a bonded area (bA) and a bond strength (p/(bA)) noting that A is the total cross-section (625 mm2) As summarized in Table 7 after 7 days the formulations designated as 5:1 and 4:1 showed a bond strength of 0.4 and 0.5 MPa respectively; after 14 days the formulation 5:1 showed a bond strength doubled (0.8 MPa) while in samples containing the 4:1 formulation the bond strength increase is 26% (0.7 MPa) the two formulations appeared to have a completely different behavior: the formulation 5:1 had a bond strength of 0.8 MPa The formulation 4:1 exhibited a bond strength of 2.6 MPa with a significantly increasing rate over the duration considered The formulations designated as 2:1 and 1:1 required 14 and 21 days respectively to obtain a suitably cured state The samples glued with the formulation 2:1 doubled the bond strength after 21 days (1.0 MPa) with respect to the value obtained at 14 days (0.5 MPa) the 1:1 formulation which contained the greatest quantity of retarder among the trialled formulations Visual observations revealed the appearance of a partially cured layer of adhesive after 21 days with an associated bond strength of 0.7 MPa A comparison of the pull-off test results - which strongly depend on the adhesive strength to the substrate and a reasonable curing time–showed that the 4:1 formulation had the highest bonding characteristics over time The variability of the test results, as indicated by the standard deviation, is due to various factors inherent to the testing procedure when inhomogeneous substrates are studied (Croll et al., 2014; Mareš et al., 2014; Sogutlu, 2017) It is also reasonable to assume that small-scale samples might result in a greater variability due to possible geometrical irregularities such as non-perfect face coplanarity The contact angle reported for cement mortar substrates was taken as the average contact angle of the three drops on that substrate and is provided in Table 8 along with the coefficients of variation (COV%) Contact angle results for varying n-CA formulations resulting in changes of the substrate/adhesive interface a significant decrease of the contact angle can be achieved by increasing the acrylic acid content The contact angle of the 5:1 formulation is slightly smaller than the pure CA featuring a decrease which is proportional to the AA content (∼17%) Interestingly the 4:1 and 2:1 formulation showed a similar contact angle value (11°) suggesting an increase of 60% of the wettability to the substrate surface with respect to the pure CA featured an increase in wettability of 75% (6°) This suggests that no significant changes in chemistry had occurred as result of the 3D printing process; despite the thermal cycles related to the TETs 3D printing process there is no evidence of polymer degradation Comparison of the DSC of PLA employed in the making of the TETS Run Conditions N2 flow 100 ml min-1 temperature ramp 10°C min-1 (A) Comparison of the DSC-TGA of the polymerized CA and CA/AA adhesives after a week of curing in air The material does not decompose until 250°C and no weight loss can be attributed to chemical reaction and or solvent loss Figure 6B shows the thermogram of the pure CA and the 1:1 formulation The measurements highlighted that the two polymers are quite different whilst the 1:1 polymer appeared transparent and quite soft the pure CA shows a peak of decomposition at 245°C whilst the 1:1 polymer shows a displacement of this peak to 239°C There is no weight loss for the 1:1 formulation in the region of the boiling point of the AA (141°C) thus suggesting a strong interaction of the AA with the pure CA The pure CA polymerization mechanism follows that of anionic polymerization it can be reasonably assumed that AA may polymerize by a slow thermal-radical process which is inhibited by the presence of hydroquinone the nature of the resulting polymer requires further investigation” The 1H NMR spectra of the commercial CA is reported in Figure 7A. Several signals can be seen, which suggests a formulation comprising different monomers. Moreover, the presence of the peaks at 7.09 and 6.66 ppm suggests two vinyl protons probably due to free monomers. The NMR spectrum of the 1:1 formulation dissolved in deuterated chloroform, shown in Figure 7B The presence of non-polymerized monomers can by deduced by assigning in the region 5.86–6.49 ppm and the broadening and change of intensity of others suggests the formation of several polymeric species; however the study of the polymer nature is beyond the scope of the present work the addition of AA to the commercial monomer CA appears to modify both the macroscopic and molecular properties of the resulting polymer 1H NMR spectrum of the polymerized CA dissolved in CDCl3(A) and polymerized CA/AA dissolved in CDCl3(B) the properties of innovative cyanoacrylate adhesives (n-CA) have been investigated for applications in self-healing concrete technologies The study explored the properties of newly designed formulations which involved the additions of retarders such as the acrylic acid (AA) and the nitro-anthraquinone (n-AQ) in different ratios to a commercial cyanoacrylate (CA) adhesive The design of the n-CA formulation focused first on reducing the curing time This was accomplished by introducing components that were chemically compatible with the PLA of the 3D printed mini-vascular networks (MVNs) units It was also important that the n-CA maintained good bond properties with cementitious substrates From the analyses of the results presented in the paper the following main conclusions have been drawn: − The n-CA formulations form the basis for an innovative healing agent able to act efficiently and with good encapsulation stability the addition of both AA and n-AQ to a commercial CA product resulted in the formation of compounds with an ability to remain liquid within PLA carriers for longer durations than commercial CA adhesives alone − The polymerization rate and the bond strength to the cementitious matrix of four formulations (CA:AA:nAq in the ratios 5–1:1:0.02) were evaluated All of the CA formulations exhibited a significant increase in curing time with respect to the unmodified CA whilst in the best case (4:1) the tensile bond strength only decreased by 4% less the resultant values remain compatible with the mechanical properties of the cement matrix By increasing the proportion of the retarder the wettability was significantly improved − The 4:1 formulation showed the highest bond strength over time and good wettability (contact angle) to cementitious substrates It showed a significant increase in bond strength from 14 days to 21 − The greater absorption of the n-CA formulations into the cementitious matrix over the curing period implies that it is important to ensure an adequate supply of n-CA for the full healing potential of the n-CA formulations to be realised − TGA analysis carried out on PLA samples highlighted that no relevant changes in chemistry occurred as a result of the 3D printing process TGA/DSC analysis showed a chemical interaction between the CA and AA completely different in nature from the commercial CA monomer NMR spectroscopy confirmed this hypothesis It has been demonstrated that it is possible to manipulate the properties of a commercial adhesive to begin to satisfy the various requirements for a healing agent in an encapsulated self-healing system The next phase of research will explore the crack healing potential and the enhanced durability performance of concrete structures containing vascular and mini-vascular networks with modified CA-based healing agents studies are needed to optimize the CA formulation via mix design refine the polymerization mechanism and examine the mechanical properties of the healing system under a range of environmental conditions will allow self-healing systems to be further refined and optimized for targeted healing of varying spatial and/or temporal damage which will ultimately facilitate the adoption of self-healing materials by the construction industry The datasets presented in this study can be found in
