A new study from the University of Michigan shows that Black stroke patients arrive at the hospital significantly later than their white counterparts
Subscribe to the Detroit Evening Report on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, NPR.org or wherever you get your podcasts
the research included data from more than 600,000 patients in the American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines Stroke Registry from mid-2015 through 2019
The study revealed that it took on average 28 minutes longer for Black patients with stroke symptoms to receive emergency care
Researchers also found that EMS workers were roughly 20% less likely to notify emergency departments ahead of a Black patient’s arrival compared to a white patient
The disparity was most prevalent in areas with a high poverty rate
says getting a stroke patient to the hospital quickly is crucial for positive health outcomes
“The therapies that we have for stroke are really effective
but they are only available within a short time frame from the time that symptoms start,” Royan said
Royan says there has been significant effort to making health care inside hospitals equitable
and it’s time to bring those efforts outside the hospital as well
“This is a disparity that must be addressed, as Black Americans have a higher prevalence of stroke, get strokes younger and die at greater numbers from the condition,” said Royan in a news release

ONCE known as the 'Pearl of the Atlantic'
a town in France has been compared to Brazil since being rebuilt
Unfortunately, during World War Two
this gave architects the chance to completely redesigned the town as only a few villas survived
the town is full of white concrete low-rise buildings
Only a select few of the original villas remained
The more modern look meant that the former style of the town has disappeared but in its place, Brazilian-inspired concrete roofs appeared.
Many of the villas built by architects after the war are now worth a fortune.
One villa, located about five minutes from the beach but without sea views, recently went on the market for €1.1million (£942,199).
In comparison, one of the remaining villas from the 1930, located only 600 metres from the beach
But the emergence of the new villas in the 1950s were not greeted with open arms by local residents
Charlotte explained that for a long time the villas did not have the same value in the eyes of the locals as the 1930s villas
that has now changed and some of the 1950s are sold within days of being put on the market
Rules in the area have been introduced to protect the villas, meaning that it is forbidden to put external insulation on walls and solar panels are only allowed if they cannot be seen from the road
The rules also protect original doors and fittings
may of which are unique having been made by artisans using wood
"It is an effort but almost everyone agrees that it is worth trying to keep the vision alive of the people who rebuilt the town," Charlotte added
Royan's history dates back to the 19th century
Rich families from Bordeaux would take boast down the estuary
and visitors from Cognac and Libourne would flock to the region
A railway then arrived in 1875, allowing more visitors to travel to the town and build holiday villas.
This result in holiday villas with grand towers - all in Gothic style
One holiday village - Le Parc - stretched from the beach to the hill behind it and was full of ornate buildings
Names like the Prince of Wales and Picasso stayed in the town and helped it to gain the nickname 'The Pearl of the Atlantic'
When the German navy put huge guns and bunkers along the estuary mouth and buried mines across the town during World War Two, Royan completely changed
Royan eventually ended up flattened by bombing raids and was one of the last towns to be liberated
It wasn't until the 1950s when the town redeveloped

a town of 18,000 inhabitants on the Atlantic coast south of La Rochelle
was almost completely destroyed at the end of World War Two
giving architects a blank canvas to rebuild it around the few seaside villas that survived
low-rise town dominated by white concrete but with enough architectural follies from before and after the war to give interest
Some of the villas command stratospheric prices
situated at the mouth of the Gironde estuary
had its heyday in the late 19th Century when it developed as a holiday resort
Rich bourgeois families from Bordeaux were the first
and it also attracted visitors from Cognac and Libourne
families from Limoges and all over France built holiday villas in the town where
The results were holiday villas with added towers (why not?)
gothic flourishes or even Alpine fretwork and Japanese pavilions
A holiday village called Le Parc extended from the beach and up the hill behind it
The Prince of Wales and Picasso were some of the big names who stayed in the town
which gained the nickname The Pearl of the Atlantic
the good times for Royan ended in a big way during the war – the German navy put huge guns along the estuary mouth
After D-Day and then the invasion by Allies of the south of France
the local commander refused to quit and run back to Germany
The result was that the town was flattened by bombing raids
which included the first large-scale use of napalm by the US airforce
and three days of heavy fighting in April 1945
just weeks before the official German surrender
Royan was one of the very last towns in France to be liberated – Charles de Gaulle made it a political priority to have French soldiers chase Germans from the country
only a few of the original villas in Le Parc remained
the town was rebuilt with white concrete as the main material
a history expert from the town hall’s heritage and culture section
previously told The Connexion: “It was a deliberate choice to be low rise
“The main architects and urban developers were influenced by Brazilian architecture
which is why white concrete curves predominate
instead of the grey used in places like Le Havre.”
but the town’s municipality took the opportunity to rationalise access to the seaside
such as a Brazilian-inspired concrete-roofed market
It contrasted with the controversial dark grey concrete church of Notre-Dame de Royan
which is hated and loved in equal measure in the town
if owners wanted to build modern villas in contemporary styles to replace their old homes
The villas built by architects after the war are now worth a fortune
built on a rise five minutes from the beach
four bedrooms and a pool in a 694m² garden
Even an ‘ordinary’ 1930s villa without architectural flourishes
Getting townsfolk to appreciate the 1950s buildings has been a long process
“There was no problem with the pre-war villas but the 1950s ones for a long time did not have the same value in the eyes of the local population
and the prices some of them fetch show that,” she said
“Some are sold within days of being put on the market.”
Urban development rules have been made to protect them – it is forbidden to put external insulation on walls
and solar panels are tolerated only if they cannot be seen from the road
Protecting features such as original doors and fittings is also a priority
often the only solution is to build a second
“It is an effort but almost everyone agrees that it is worth trying to keep the vision alive of the people who rebuilt the town.”

A new exhibition at the Museo Picasso Málaga will explore the radical development of Picasso’s artistic practice during the time he spent living in the French coastal town of Royan from 1939 to 1940
which will bring together Picasso’s sketchbooks from this period for the first time
organised in collaboration with the Almine and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso Foundation
will contextualise these notebooks by presenting them alongside other works Picasso created in Royan as well as documentation from that period
photographs and Picasso’s poems will collectively illuminate this prolific chapter in the artist’s life and career
Picasso produced eight sketchbooks filled with pencil and ink drawings while residing in Royan after relocating to the town
with Dora Maar and his friend and secretary Jaime Sabartés
following the outbreak of the Second World War
Picasso’s mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter and their daughter Maya were already settled in Royan
Picasso frequently used sketchbooks to capture visual ideas
after moving to Royan and leaving behind two spacious studios in Paris
the nature of his artistic activity changed
Perhaps due to the limited availability of art materials in Royan – such as canvases and oils – Picasso purchased several ordinary notebooks from the local Hachette bookshop
which allowed him to carry and use them wherever he went.
The drawings Picasso made in the eight sketchbooks reveal ideas not only for larger works
A highlight of the exhibition will be the large oil-on-canvas Woman Dressing her Hair
on loan from the Museum of Modern Art in New York
The painting brings together many of the radical ideas and experiments around form and composition featured in the sketchbooks.
Picasso: The Royan Sketchbooks will bring to light Picasso’s methods of working and the ways in which he was affected by the Second World War
providing an insight into a previously unexplored chapter in the artist’s life and career.
The exhibition is curated by Marilyn McCully and Michael Raeburn

And the Portuguese is on the lookout for a new No. 1, especially given Altay Bayindir’s uncertain future while the current No 1 has also been linked with a move away
Senne Lammens is one name who has been frequently linked with a move to Old Trafford recently with the Belgian ace impressing for Royal Antwerp
The “exciting” shot-stopper has kept seven clean sheets in 33 games and has earned praise for pulling off brilliant close-range saves
And his displays have alerted several Premier League sides to his availability with both Manchester clubs joining the likes of Newcastle
West Ham and Wolves in the chase for the 22-year-old
Not only in England but also European giants such as Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also looking at the 6ft 3in goalie
CaughtOffside have claimed Pep Guardiola is on the lookout for an able replacement for Ederson which means a potential showdown between the City boss and Amorim is on the cards
The 20-time English league champions have the upper hand in that case with the player himself recently revealing that he would find it tough to turn down a move to the Theatre of Dreams
“Premier League giants Manchester City and Manchester United are looking to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window
Both are looking to make moves for a new player in goal and they are fighting for the same goalkeeper
“The uncertain future of Man City goalkeeper Ederson is forcing Pep Guardiola to enter the market to sign a new goalkeeper while Ruben Amorim has been unimpressed with the performances of Andre Onana this season
“According to Caught Offside sources
Royal Antwerp’s 22-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens is attracting the attention of the giant clubs of Europe and the Premier League with his performance this season.”
The report claims Antwerp are looking at earning €20-€25 million from his sale and whether INEOS give the green light to proceed will be interesting to see
United are not in the pink of health financially and the Red Devils will have to prioritise which positions to strengthen first before proceeding
midfielder and wingback much more urgently
finances will dictate in which direction United proceed in during the transfer window

one being aimed at the entry-level buyer and/or park fleet buyers
The new Swift Royan range offers excellent value and still has some design flair
The 35ft x 12ft two bedroomed model should prove to be popular out of the three on offer
The exterior is simple in design with no front doors or even a bay window but it does have all the drains and guttering in place and the Swift Royan uses a galvanised chassis as well as Swift’s bonded construction system for extra warmth
It might not be a head turner – but it’s only the front flat windows that give you a clue this isn’t a high- end holiday caravan
On entering the Swift Royan static caravan it feels pleasant and modern and first impressions are not of an entry level unit
especially the front lounge area with its comfortable L-shaped built in settee
There’s a low table for your morning coffee or tea and a large side TV cabinet with a deep drawer and shelving
LED ceiling lights provide the illumination and modern light curtains brighten the décor
The dinette is by the entrance door and consists of a movable bench seat on one side and two circular cushioned stools – though four dining chairs can be ordered as an option
There’s a large side window to look out while you have your meal
while opposite is the L-shaped kitchen which provides some useful worktop space
There are several handless cupboards and wall units too so storage is good – some with open shelving
With a white colour scheme mixed with a traditional wood grain it all looks very modern and tasteful
The oven has a four burner spark ignition hob complete with extractor fan
No fridge or microwave are fitted as standard but provisions are made for these to be added
The side twin bedroom is designed for children
Here there’s an overhead shelf above beds and a small wardrobe offers reasonable hanging space
Across the corridor the main bathroom has a good-sized sliding door shower cubicle
toilet and pedestal sink with a mirror above
Stepping into the master bedroom and we found it was quite spacious
The king size bed has overhead shelving above plus hanging open bedside cabinets at either side in a light woodgrain
There’s also a large built-in wardrobe and a small vanity unit with a mirror
Next to the large wardrobe is a simple en-suite with a loo and hand basin – but no shower
Verdict: The Swift Royan holiday caravan is for the first time buyer
Although there are a few tell tale signs it’s at the lower end of the market
They have kept price affordable and the Royan isn’t a static caravan that lacks in too much
The interior is simple but modern and tasteful and the options list allows extras that are important to the buyer so they can add to the enjoyment of the Royan
plenty of bedroom storage and pleasing colour scheme
Minus points: No storage in the main bathroom and limited cupboard space and shelving in the lounge
In a nutshell: An entry-level holiday caravan with good essential specification
including a galvanised chassis and central heating
Other Swift Royan models available: 28ft x 12ft two bedroomed
Others to look at: ABI Coworth 36ft x 12ft two bedroomed
Arronbrook Topaz 35ft x 12ft two bedroomed
Key optional extras: Exterior colours and finish
Spotted in the classifieds: A 2025 Swift Royan static caravan for sale in Caernarfon
Cost to insure this sited holiday caravan would be £247**

*Extra charges will be made by park operators and/or distributors for transport and siting and annual maintenance

and other people close to the matter describe an investment firm in disarray
by Theodore Schleifer
Link Stephanie Keith/Getty ImagesSeven years ago, a smooth-talking associate of Peter Thiel promised that he had launched the “capstone” to Thiel’s investment empire
naming their new firm after a mythical metal in Lord of the Rings because it was flashy yet permanent
“It’s invaluable,” leader Ajay Royan told one interviewer about Mithril Capital
It has all of the things we’d like to be associated with.”
But Mithril Capital is primarily associated with some other things these days: drama
and unanswered questions about its finances
Mithril had its best moment yet last week when a portfolio company, Auris Health, sold to Johnson & Johnson for more than $3 billion — returning at least $500 million to the fund
The late-stage investment firm has been a slow-burning mess for the past several months
The firm’s troubles have disappointed Silicon Valley’s highest-profile investor
according to multiple people close to Thiel
who has lent his brand name to the firm but is not operationally involved
And it has left a long list of scorned parties
slowly shrinking the firm’s headcount of investors — despite having more than $1.3 billion in assets under management
That has all raised questions about what exactly is happening with the money and how Royan is handling it
and other people close to the matter who spoke with Recode
Mithril declined multiple requests to make Royan available for an interview for this story
The firm also declined to comment on the record to address any specific pieces of reporting
“Mithril has invested deliberately and differently
We owe the success of this patient approach to entrepreneurs who work for the long term amid a trend-ridden industry,” a Mithril spokesperson said
This is a classic Silicon Valley story of big celebrities
and what can happen when you pair big money with little accountability
But it is not a five-alarm fire in the orbit of Thiel
who is proudly “contrarian” and no stranger to drama
Despite raising $740 million for its second fund — with a first close in April 2016 — Mithril Capital has invested only about $90 million of the cash
according to multiple people with knowledge of the figures
That’s highly unusual for a firm at this point in its investment period; a typical firm would probably be spending at a three- or four-times faster clip
Royan has long been clear that he wants to be able to wait out high valuations that have dominated tech investing over the past decade — crafting a 12-year fund instead of the usual 10-year fund to give him more flexibility
Royan graduated from Yale at age 20 and got to know Thiel while he was becoming a minor celebrity at PayPal
The two have now worked together for 16 years
Mithril has always been a somewhat unusual firm
with an emphasis on investing outside of Silicon Valley in places like Kansas City and with a single clear leader
“Mithril is a unique fund: By design
its orthogonal approach is not for everybody
and it’s been uniquely successful,” said Jeremiah Hall
“As the largest LP in Mithril and the chairman of its investment committee
Peter is proud of Ajay’s leadership.”
Troubling to some are concerns about Mithril’s management fees
which an investment firm uses to pay for operational costs like salaries
Royan has told people that he and his entities control 100 percent of the management company
meaning that he would be entitled to 100 percent of the fees and would decide where they go
The source with knowledge of Mithril’s thinking disputed the ownership structure of the management committee but declined to provide any details
Paperwork filed with the SEC shows that more than 75 percent of the management company is owned by a limited company in the Cayman Islands called Talleus
which in turn is owned 75 percent or more by Royan
The firm is likely collecting as much as $20 million a year in management fees
We don’t know exactly how much the firm spends
but people close to Mithril say they can’t imagine that the firm
is spending more than half of that on operational expenses
The source with knowledge of Mithril’s thinking disputed the $20 million figure but also declined to provide an alternative
Perhaps the only other person with that data? Royan’s sister, Anuja Royan, who he hired as the firm’s chief financial officer — she has a separate staff that is technically part of an affiliate based in Canada called Mithril360
While she is well credentialed as a former public company CFO
her role has troubled some former employees
and others close to the firm and raised questions about its internal transparency and governance
“A lot of things that were really transparent suddenly became not transparent at all,” said one former employee
Ajay Royan told Bloomberg in 2017 that Mithril does not “charge excessive fees.” But he was not exactly known for being thrifty with management money
Former employees describe Friday catered lunches where costs could run over $100 per person
and Royan was known internally for a “book ordering problem” — a former employee said that “unbelievable amounts of books” would be delivered each week to the office by Amazon to maintain the firm’s extensive library
“What made [Silicon Valley] really attractive was it was one giant incubator as a society, with a lot of pay-it-forward culture and a low cost of trying,” he told TechCrunch last year
“Now I’m worried about all three of those.”
That decision has been unpopular internally
Some employees have been resisting moving to Austin and leaving the heart of the tech ecosystem
four junior employees in San Francisco — some of whom are the children of limited partners in the fund — believed that they were soon to be terminated because they would not move to Austin
according to former Mithril employees in touch with current employees
Then at the last second — as Recode was making inquiries about this story — the employees were spared
But the rest have been operating in some fear of looming axings and are now without an office
The source with knowledge of Mithril’s thinking confirmed that the firm did ask all its employees to move to Austin
but insisted that it was open to its employees working remotely
This has all led to a work environment that alternates between absent and intimidating
and where Royan has a reputation for being a difficult boss
at least 11 members of the investing team have left the firm since the firm’s founding in 2012; five departed after the second fund had its first close in the spring of 2016
That turnover has forced at least some founders to have to cycle through multiple different people from Mithril on their board
While those 11 are of different seniority levels
a common concern for multiple people across the organization has been the salaries that Mithril has paid to its investors
which multiple sources described as below-market
In a work hierarchy described as very top-down, some sources describe Royan, who now splits his time among Austin, San Francisco, and Canada, as hard to get ahold of and say communication is an issue. That can be true for Mithril’s limited partners, even the venture firm’s own investors. Those relationships are tightly controlled by Royan, who is the firm’s sole managing general partner
and who in general likes to avoid confrontation
Limited partners have included the Singaporean sovereign wealth fund Temasek
and a heavy mix of personal offices that manage family money from overseas
Money has come from the billionaire empires of Egypt’s Sawiris family and Malaysia’s Krishnan family
some limited partners still speak highly of Royan and are sympathetic to his argument about being slow and steady with deals at a time of high valuations in Silicon Valley
should quiet some concerns about his strategy
But other limited partners have been trying to survey their options
Some limited partners have tried confronting Royan over his spending rate
And it’s especially hard for limited partners to organize themselves since Mithril unusually does not have a regular annual meeting — during which limited partners typically trade contacts
The firm may be listening to the calls for change — last week, it posted a job listing for a chief accounting officer
in Austin to handle financials and deal with limited partners
A first fund is raised on reputation — in this case
perhaps seeing it as a way to get into Thiel’s choosier
flocked to Mithril Capital in 2012 given its $100 million blessing from Thiel
And its first fund has performed quite well
with investments in not just Auris but also Thiel’s data analytics company Palantir
Thiel doubled his personal investment in the second fund
But that’s when the spigot got clogged
Royan appeared no longer interested in deals
“[W]rite clichés on a roulette board and just roll the wheel,” said one former employee
“He literally did not want to compete
If there was a process or bidding war or something resembling a competition
he would just walk,” the employee said
‘I don’t want to outbid.’”
The source with knowledge of Mithril’s thinking said the pace of spending in the second fund was about equivalent to the pace in the first fund
Now, a further challenge is that the team simply may be too small to compete, with only a few professional investors who can lead their own deals remaining. The source with knowledge of Mithril’s thinking said it employs 17 people, but that figure includes many people who work for Mithril360 and in support functions. Only eight employees are listed on the firm’s website
who has paid relatively little attention to the drama at Mithril in recent years
But as Recode began inquiring about the state of his late-stage venture arm
Thiel in recent weeks has become increasingly agitated with Royan and the state of affairs there
who is technically the chair of Mithril’s investment committee
has worked with Royan for going on two decades
dating back to their work at Clarium Capital
and associates of his say they have been reluctant to bring up the situation at Mithril with him
he is described by associates to be frustrated
Thiel gave his imprimatur to Royan’s fund in the first place
But Thiel’s focus is less on Silicon Valley investments and more on other pursuits. He’s active in politics. He has made noise — but with little evident follow-through so far — about building a conservative media company
And he sold his San Francisco mansion and moved to Los Angeles (although Recode has learned that he recently bought a previously unreported house in Palo Alto)
motivated by a revulsion to Silicon Valley’s politics and culture
Mithril has given up its modern industrial office in San Francisco’s Presidio
But despite announcing plans to move to Austin five months ago, Mithril Capital’s office — overlooking the Texas Capitol — today remains sparsely furnished.

Mithril Capital raised over $1 billion on the name of Thiel
one of Silicon Valley’s biggest celebrities
Now federal investigators are looking under the hood
LinkJohn Lamparski/Getty ImagesFederal investigators are probing the conduct and practices of Mithril Capital
a venture capital firm co-founded by Peter Thiel
US officials — including the FBI — have in recent months questioned some people close to Mithril regarding concerns of possible financial misconduct at the firm
according to people familiar with the matter who insisted on anonymity given its sensitivity
Mithril confirmed in a statement that its lawyers are in touch with government authorities
has worked with Thiel for almost two decades and has used that relationship to raise over $1 billion
Royan has frustrated some of his investors by sitting on some of their money rather than investing it in startups — while almost certainly raking in millions of dollars in fees for himself
This federal probe is just the latest — but most significant — problem for the firm
which has increasingly struggled with internal tensions
and Mithril could eventually be cleared of wrongdoing
If you have more information about the situation at Mithril Capital or at other venture capital firms
please contact me at teddy.schleifer@recode.net or at 202-809-2946 on messaging services such as Signal
When asked if Mithril and Royan were cooperating with the government probe
a Mithril spokesperson said: “This is a foiled plot by a self-serving ex-employee
There are no allegations from any government agency
our attorneys are in contact with government authorities in order to protect [investors]
and portfolio companies against any extortionate behavior.”
The drama around Mithril pulls back the curtain on a venture capital industry that is awash in money but governed by relatively few rules
And it raises questions about how often similar situations are unfolding quietly in high finance but don’t manage to draw the scrutiny of the federal government
And while the probe is in the early stages
it threatens to destabilize the world of Thiel
who heads an enormously influential network of tech investors
and political allies across Silicon Valley
Thiel sits on the board of Facebook; he’s also built an unusual amount of political power and raised his public profile as one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent supporters of President Donald Trump
A federal investigation could subject Thiel, who has not publicly distanced himself from Royan, to new scrutiny as investigators put the firm he co-founded under a microscope. It could also stain the reputation Thiel has established for having a Midas touch in investing
A spokesperson for Thiel, Jeremiah Hall, declined to comment on the new probe, but has said previously that Thiel was “proud” of Royan
In the months since Recode reported on unanswered financial questions at Mithril
according to people familiar with the matter
The firm has lost staff and has adopted a more defensive posture
Two of the other managing directors at Mithril
recently left the venture capital firm in contentious exits
the people say — departures that until now haven’t previously been reported
which are at least the sixth and seventh people to leave the investing team since the spring of 2016
have essentially stripped a shop with more than $1.2 billion in assets down to a bare-bones operation whose remaining senior full-time employees consist of Royan
That shrinking staff list might explain why the firm also removed the “Team” page from its website about two months ago
Its entire website now features just a single substantive paragraph of information about the firm
Royan is described by sources close to Mithril as obsessed with trying to plug up leaks in his network
tactics that these sources say have further sapped morale
Royan called his staff to the offices of a downtown San Francisco law firm for a heated
intimidating meeting where he implored them to feel gratitude for working at Mithril
he repossessed some of his staff’s phones and computers to try to find leakers
a search mission that effectively cut off some of his remaining employees from any real Mithril work
(Mithril told Recode “this was a device upgrade to increase productivity.”) And in recent months
Royan offered at least one former employee some additional financial upside in Mithril funds — if that employee agreed to become a consultant for the firm and signed reinforced nondisclosure agreements
is not the only entity scrutinizing Mithril for possible financial misconduct
One of the most powerful investment advisers in Silicon Valley
is looking into Mithril over financial mismanagement
according to people briefed on Cambridge Associates’ activity
The firm’s clients have invested millions into Mithril’s second fund
which recommended that they invest in Mithril in the first place
Cambridge Associates is an outside investment adviser to wealthy families and foundations
serving as a powerful gatekeeper of sorts between Silicon Valley and the richest people in the world
While it cannot compel cooperation in the same way the federal government can
Cambridge Associates is a behind-the-scenes powerbroker in tech investing
and its scrutiny could pose reputational risk to Mithril Capital and Thiel’s empire more broadly
Cambridge Associates officials repeatedly declined to comment
Mithril denies that Cambridge Associates is investigating its firm
All of this months-long drama surrounding Mithril has proven to be an embarrassing series of events for Thiel, who has personally given a total of $300 million to the firm and is tied to Mithril by reputation
Some entrepreneurs and investors have chosen to work with Royan specifically because they thought it could give them greater access to Thiel
even though he is not involved in Mithril’s day-to-day operations
While Thiel has a high appetite, in general, for media spectacle, part of the reason Mithril’s drama is so notable is because Thiel projects typically are well-run. Royan promised when he started the firm that it would be the “capstone” to Thiel’s investment empire
Mithril said that many of its LPs “have expressed overwhelming appreciation for Mithril’s disciplined deployment of capital and exceptional returns in this late-cycle environment.”
Other prominent investments by Mithril include the Thiel-founded data analytics company Palantir, and, according to sources, uBiome, a biotech company under its own federal investigation that just last week filed for bankruptcy
that is a highly unusual pace of deployment for a venture capital firm
which charges its investors management fees in order to invest money into startups on their behalf
Royan suddenly sent investors a long investor update that defended his strategy — a move read by at least some investors as an attempt to quell their concerns
he’s also begun quickly trying to spend the money: He told investors that he would be spending about $90 million on upcoming deals
a sum that includes Neocis and Glance; if actualized
that would mean Mithril has invested about $180 million of the total $740 million that it collected
Mithril told Recode that it has communicated its investment strategy to its investors and that the firm “takes a disciplined and concentrated investment approach.”
But over the course of the eight-page investor letter
Royan said not a word about any of the turnover or drama at his firm in the past year
which in the words of one person familiar with the matter
was “glaring in its omission.”
Those management fees go further in a low-tax state like Texas, where Mithril Capital said it was moving late last year. Several employees resisted the sudden move to Austin, which has a much smaller startup scene than Silicon Valley. Royan has said the move was rooted in his distaste for the Bay Area
two sources told Recode that Mithril leaders alluded to tax advantages when privately explaining the multiple reasons for the move
And Department of Justice officials in San Francisco have increasingly expressed interest in regulating the world of Silicon Valley investors and possible fraud with the US Attorney’s Office’s new Corporate Fraud Strike Force. The FBI, the investigative arm for the DOJ
is one of the agencies involved in the Mithril probe
Royan can proceed with his work even as federal investigators probe his firm
Royan has added to his public relations team
That appearance, though, might be contingent on how the federal probe plays out.
we are considered among the leading countries in stem cell science in the region
and so far we have been able to produce several products that are going through the stages of clinical trials and obtaining their license; It is expected that these products
will be supplied to the pharmaceutical in the next two years,” Leyla Taqiyar
Noting that the skin products are tissues of specific skin cells like fibroblast and keratinocyte
“They are produced in specific dimensions and in the form of sheets and can be used to treat burns and diabetic foot ulcers.”
“We have also made products by using stem cells to treat rheumatoid arthritis and chronic back pain
and these products have now completed their clinical trial phase and are in the process of obtaining a license,” Taqiyar said
Iranian researchers at Royan Research Institute had also made new discoveries by studying the role of secretions (exosomes) isolated from stem cells in repairing the cartilage of the amputated finger
“This research project aims to investigate the effect of secretions (exosome) isolated from stem cells on repairing the cartilage of an amputated finger
researchers have conducted studies on the amputated finger of a mouse,” Taqiyar told ANA at the time
“Exosomes are cell secretions that can be changed by manipulations performed on them in research processes
Human and animal body cells have the ability to release other secretions with the genetic manipulations,” she added
“Secretions caused by mesenchymal stem cells
with the manipulations carried out on their genome
enjoy the capability to repair the damaged tissue and organ of the body,” Taqiyar said
“The main goal of this research was to investigate the secretions released from the mesenchymal stem cells of the mouse’s amputated finger
the initial phase of this research is testing on animals
the necessary clinical tests will also be performed on the human body,” she noted

The private company that runs Parc Prison has denied covering up the 25th death related to the jail in Bridgend since the beginning of 2023
G4S was responding to an allegation made by Zack Griffiths
who runs a Facebook platform called HMP Prisons Justice Group
Mr Griffiths issued a statement that said: “On June 5 we reported that something was happening in HMP Parc
We received some information from a source
the details we felt were somewhat vague and uncertain
with sadness I can confirm that there was a ‘secret death’ that was never made public
“Mr Henry Royan died at HMP Parc on June 5
bringing the total deaths to 25 [since January 2023]
“We were aware on the day of some issue at the prison
I am shocked that HMP Parc never released this information.”
Mr Griffiths went on to point out that the death occurred during the first week that new Parc director Will Styles was in charge
who formerly ran G4S’s HMP Five Wells in Northamptonshire
took over from previous director Heather Whitehead
Ms Whitehead’s departure with immediate effect was “not in response to one single incident”
Ten inmates had died at the prison since February 27 2023 and three prisoners were also taken to hospital following disorder at the prison days before Ms Whitehead was replaced
A spokesperson for HMP Parc emphatically denied that there had been a cover-up in relation to Mr Royan’s death
A HMP Parc spokesperson said: “Mr Robert Royan (date of birth 17.01.1953) passed away on Wednesday 05 June 2024
His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with his family and friends
this will be investigated by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman and the cause of death is for the coroner to determine.”
had been a hospital inpatient since April 29
It is not thought that his death was drugs-related
When he was jailed at Swansea Crown Court in 2018 for setting fire to an electricity meter cupboard at the flats he lived in at Pembroke Dock
he was said by the sentencing judge to have had a lifelong obsession with causing fires
At least four of the deaths since February 2023 are believed to be drug-related
while one prison staff member has been arrested in connection with drug dealing there
South Wales Police said in March that a Nitazene – a synthetic opioid drug – had been identified in connection with all four deaths
had been identified in two of the four deaths
G4S has previously said it has a “zero-tolerance policy towards drugs”
Two former inmates at Parc have spoken recently to NationCymru about a culture in which prison officers bring drugs into the jail in return for payment
told us: “Our Facebook group gets a lot of information from former and current prisoners
I’m aware of one officer at Parc who has been bringing in drugs for prisoners since at least 2014
So far as I’m aware he’s still doing it now
“Recently a Parc prison officer contacted the group to tell us he was aware of a colleague who was bringing in drugs but didn’t want to identify them because they had a family to support and he didn’t want them to lose their job
but the spotlight is on Parc because of the number of deaths.”
G4S has acknowledged there is a problem with drugs getting into the prison
and has previously stated: “Allegations of any wrongdoing by a member of staff are thoroughly investigated and reported to the police where appropriate.”

Members of the pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) protein family act as specificity factors in C-to-U RNA editing
The expansion of the PPR superfamily in plants provides the sequence variation required for design of consensus-based RNA-binding proteins
We used this approach to design a synthetic RNA editing factor to target one of the sites in the Arabidopsis chloroplast transcriptome recognised by the natural editing factor CHLOROPLAST BIOGENESIS 19 (CLB19)
We show that our synthetic editing factor specifically recognises the target sequence in in vitro binding assays
The designed factor is equally specific for the target rpoA site when expressed in chloroplasts and in the bacterium E
This study serves as a successful pilot into the design and application of programmable RNA editing factors based on plant PPR proteins
These limitations justify examining the possibility of redesigning natural protein-guided editing systems such as those found in plants
we aimed to target only one of the two editing events that are missing in clb19
thus attempting to design a synthetic editing factor that is more specific than the natural editing factor it is intended to replace
Here we demonstrate that a synthetic editing factor of this type can be expressed in plants and in bacteria
that it edits the chosen target RNA with high specificity
and that it is at least partially independent of plant-specific cofactors
The C at the editing site is shaded in blue
Binding assays were performed with dsn3PLS (a
MORF9 in the presence of 1 nM rpoA-78691 target RNA (a
a Seedlings were grown under a 16 h photoperiod with a light intensity of either 100 µmol m−2 s−2 (left panel) or 40 µmol m−2 s−2 (right panel)
The construct used to transform the clb19-3 mutant line is indicated on the left
b Chloroplast transcript abundances are shown as log2 fold-difference compared to their levels in clb19
The RNA was extracted from plants initially grown under low light
c RNA editing at the rpoA-78691 and clpP1-69942 sites in the four genotypes
Partial editing of rpoA-78691 and no editing of clpP1-69942 was observed in three biological replicates of the plant line expressing dsn3PLS-DYW
dsn3PLS-DYW is capable of editing rpoA-78691 but not clpP1-69942
Very little editing of rpoA-78691 was observed in the line expressing inactive dsn3PLS-DYW (E70A)
The transgene transcript abundance was quantified using the RNA-seq data to verify to what degree differences in editing could be explained by variations in expression level (Supplementary Fig. S4)
The lines with the highest transgene transcript abundance also showed the highest proportions of edited transcripts
but the editing differences between the lines expressing CLB19 and dsn3PLS-DYW were much greater than the differences in transcript abundance
This suggests that CLB19 is more efficient at inducing editing
although it is possible that despite the lack of differences in transcript abundance
the proteins may accumulate to different levels
Despite the inclusion of a c-myc tag in the transgene constructs
we were unable to detect either the CLB19 or dsn3PLS-DYW transgene products by western blot to verify this
The only significant site where the log(odds ratio) exceeds 2 is the intended target site
The ~492,000 sites below this threshold are indicated by the density contours (grey-black)
From left to right: dsn3PLS-DYW(E70A) + MORF2 as a negative control; MORF2 and MORF9 enhance editing by dsn3PLS-DYW by similar amounts; a U at the rpoA-78691 editing position is not detectably reverse-edited to C; the clpP1-69942 site is not detectably edited with or without MORF2
All experiments were repeated in triplicate
it is noteworthy that less than 1% editing at a single site is sufficient to give rise to phenotypic differences that could provide a selective advantage
This might hint at how new editing events may arise and become selected for
This type of data will be helpful for optimising future designs
Hopefully this confirmation that MORF proteins act by enhancing RNA binding by PPR editing factors helps remove some of the confusion concerning the role of MORF/RIP proteins in RNA editing
this work demonstrates the successful use of a synthetic PPR protein as an RNA-editing factor and lays the foundation for detailed structural and mechanistic studies into the mechanism of RNA editing
Designer PPR proteins represent an attractive multipurpose scaffold for targeted RNA binding
particularly as programmable RNA-editing factors
the ‘high-light’ plants were germinated directly under 100 µE m−2 s−1 light to enhance the phenotypic differences between the lines
leaves were harvested during the period of growth at 40 µE m−2 s−1
Escherichia coli strains used in this study were DH5α (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA; https://www.thermofisher.com/) for cloning, BL21 (DE3) (Novagen, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, https://www.merckmillipore.com/) for standard protein expression
while labelled oligonucleotides were obtained from Integrated DNA Technologies (IDT
Purified MORF2 and MORF9 protein was then concentrated using a Vivaspin 3 kDa MWCO concentrator (GE Healthcare)
while purified dsn3PLS-DYW protein was concentrated using a Vivaspin 10 kDa MWCO concentrator (GE Healthcare)
Concentrated protein was divided into 200 µL aliquots
frozen in liquid N2 and stored at −80 °C until further use
REMSAs were performed as described previously34
proteins purified were prepared on ice in a dilution series from 0.05–0.2 µM dsn3PLS-DYW or dsn3PLS-E2
or at a constant concentration of 0.1 µM dsn3PLS-DYW or dsn3PLS-E2
with a gradient of 0.1–0.5 µM MORF9 in 2 × REMSA binding buffer (85 mM Tris
1 nM of pre-heated diluted RNA oligonucleotide was added to the sample and incubated for 30 min at ambient temperature before loading onto a 5% polyacrylamide gel
the fluorescence was visualised on an Amersham Typhoon system (GE Healthcare)
with an excitation wavelength of 488 nm and an emission wavelength of 520 nm
dsn3PLS-DYW (E70A) or CLB19 (34–500) were cloned into pCAMBIA1390
along with the sequences for the native CLB19 promoter (−1000 to −1)
the N-terminal chloroplast targeting peptide from pea RbcS
and a 4 × c-Myc epitope tag 5ʹ to the editing factor gene
Expression plasmids were transformed into 2-month-old clb19−3 plants by floral dipping using Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain GV3101 RifR GentR
Total RNA was isolated with RNAzol RT reagent (Sigma) from 3.5-week-old seedlings (T3) grown on half-MS plates under dim light conditions (40 µmol m−2 s−2)
chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes as ‘decoys’
The libraries were sequenced on an Illumina HiSeq4000 sequencer by Novogene
29–34 million 150 nt paired-end reads were obtained for each sample
The read data is available from NCBI (BioProject ID PRJNA680433)
Analysis of the data was carried out as described above for the chloroplast RNA data
except that the reads were mapped to the E
coli BL21 genome (accession CP010816) and the relevant pETM11 and pETM20 constructs
Nucleotide count data was analysed statistically with a Fisher exact test as implemented in the Python scipy.stats package and the p-values were corrected for multiple testing using statsmodels.stats.multitest.multipletests with the Simes-Hochberg procedure
Odds ratios were used to calculate and visualise differences in editing as they are an estimation of the ratio of editing activities in the two samples being compared
Odds ratios were calculated after adding a pseudocount of 0.5 to all observations to avoid division by zero
All experiments were replicated at least once (and in triplicate where shown)
Replicates are biologically independent samples (independent transformants)

I never thought I could fall in love with concrete or even find it aesthetically pleasing, but Notre-Dame de Royan changed that
with progressively taller columns edging higher until the final two pierce the sky
presumably to guide souls and prayers to the heavens
The shapes are like a constellation of vertical razor clams
stabbing razor clams into the sand forming a model from the shells of life for this later masterpiece that is the city’s landmark.
An alternative attractive interpretation of the vertical elements is that they are like organ pipes
I doubt the inspiration was as innocent as shells
More likely that the structure was inspired by the horror of the amassed shards of broken buildings that the church finally replaced in 1958.
The overall is shape is that of a giant yet elegant oval
with the bell tower standing proudly at the front top
though beautifully and subtly patterned with columns of small square windows (black from the outside) a typical form of Royan’s architecture
and a series of longer rectangular deep-blue windows
No bright colours are visible in this monument that filled me with awe and curiosity.
Both churches are reminders of the contemporary European tragedy of the Russian war in Ukraine and the mindless destruction
includes a grille of six blue lines that project beyond the face that give the building its name
Le Grille Pain also employs a series of small square openings for light that echo those of Notre-Dame de Royan and an outside staircase typical of Royan
but with a unique blue disc as a type of parasol

and moving blue and yellow walls that remind me of the Ukraine

how will the Ukrainians rebuild and build a future

The news came just days after the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) renewed its mandate for the twentieth time signaling the U.N.'s continued commitment to supporting Afghan human rights and well-being
But Afghans and those who want to help face a world that has largely moved on from Afghanistan
just as the country grapples with more hunger
poverty and persecution than it has at any other time since 2002
In addition to setting in motion events that have brought millions of Afghans to the brink of starvation
the fall of Kabul in August 2021 was effectively the death knell of democracy
human rights and prosperity in Afghanistan
most acutely for Afghan women and minority groups
while I am grateful that many vulnerable Afghans were evacuated
though they go largely unreported as the Taliban controls the national media
and the international media has shifted its focus
Brave Afghan women leaders and activists and members of the Hazara community—Afghanistan's Shiite ethnic minority—and other minorities have been silenced
They are focused on sharing information and analysis with Afghan women leaders and activists outside the country
in the hope that these stories will reach the international community and compel leaders to act
Reported cases of suicide among Afghan women have increased dramatically
While some women have undoubtedly died by suicide out of despair and hopelessness
the activists in Afghanistan that I am in touch with believe that many of these women are being murdered by their families
Domestic violence has increased under the horrendous economic conditions and food shortage Afghans have faced since August
Women who have been arrested by the Taliban for being outspoken are sometimes subjected to sexual abuse while detained
and the perceived shame from these events can lead families to commit honor killings
While the world has heard the heartbreaking stories of young girls being sold into marriage
Hazara girls are also regularly being disappeared and murdered
two young Hazara girls in Balkh province were murdered
and the dead body of an 11-year-old Hazara girl was found on a street in western Kabul
who both previously served as police officers
intimidating and murdering women in an attempt drive them out of all professions outside the household
The Taliban is also raising revenue by conducting raids on Tajik and Hazara homes in Kabul
claiming they are searching for illegal arms and then requiring pay offs to not report families for alleged contraband
The Taliban is also manipulating humanitarian aid distribution to cut out women and ethnic minorities, while prioritizing themselves and their supporters. Local Afghan media estimated that historic Hazara communities in Bamyan and Daykundi provinces receive just 2 percent of aid available in the country
despite representing a larger share of the population
Aid distribution to Hazaras has ceased completely in the heavily Hazara neighborhood of Dasht-e-Barchi in western Kabul
the international community has failed to do anything about it
the United Nations and the broader aid community played an important role in strengthening Afghanistan's institutions
monitoring human rights and coordinating humanitarian assistance
Although the collapse of the former Afghan government has made the job of UNAMA and other aid groups much harder than ever before
it also made their work even more critical
many countries around the world have spoken about how much they support Afghan women and Afghan women's rights
but we haven't seen that translate into action
women's organizations and members of the Hazara community and other marginalized groups as partners who can help inform
It also means implementing a mechanism for monitoring equitable humanitarian aid distribution to ensure the most at-risk groups in Afghanistan don't also face the biggest barriers to accessing aid
Although the history of the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan may already be written
the fate of millions of Afghan women and ethnic and religious minorities is not
we need the international community to not turn away

when false information about the virus began to spread on Twitter
physicians and scientists from Northwestern Medicine and other institutions banded together to combat the deadly misinformation and disinformation and support one another when they ultimately were attacked online for doing so.
Royan and fellow medical professionals explain how successful this group has been and why it is an effective tool to disseminate accurate medical information and combat disinformation while minimizing the harm related to personal and professional harassment that can come with social media advocacy
“The pandemic has been really taxing for health professionals,” said Royan (@reginaroyan), an emergency medicine research fellow and clinical instructor of Emergency Medicine
“In addition to the emotional toll caring for these very sick patients
particularly in the early waves of the pandemic
the politicization around COVID-19 added another layer of stress for many of us
One thing we highlight in this paper is that these kind of groups can be a safe space for health professionals to talk about issues like harassment on social media to keep the fight against misinformation going.”
IMPACT and other health professional amplifiers are comprised of nurses, health economists, scientists, public health professionals and physicians, Royan said. They’ve endured public harassment and attacks after posting scientifically proven medical information about the COVID-19 virus and vaccines
IMPACT has also created numerous easy-to-digest infographics in both English and Spanish around specific issues
such as the effectiveness of masking and social distancing
and how mRNA was used to create the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines
It is a creative way the group is trying to reach people who may not have been reading accurate health information
“We know that COVID-19 has disproportionately affected the Latino population
and it’s been important to us to partner with community organizations like Illinois Unidos to ensure that we are also addressing misinformation with Spanish-language resources,” Royan said.
The group has recently begun to combat false information about reproductive health issues following the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. They’ve also started disseminating information about firearm injury, such as a recent tweet that stated
“Fact: Mental illness is not an effective predictor of gun violence against others.”

Royan Kamyar, M.D., MBA
When I graduated from medical school in 2006
I was completely unaware there was a “preventive medicine” residency
Primary care was largely ignored by highly competitive students looking for the best salaries and lifestyles
The emphasis from mentors and peers was always on the “ROAD” to success: radiology
Outside of a single guest lecture I received from Dr. Dean Ornish during my second year
“prevention” as a field was minimized to vaccinations
mammograms and colon screenings… In other words
just those interventions that somehow triaged into a business model
After recently attending the American College of Preventive Medicine’s 63rd annual conference in Portland
I’m sorry to report the landscape is largely unchanged
chiefly in the form of poorly aligned reimbursement models
continue to reign as the decision-making framework that guides the future of the medical profession and patients’ lives
Physicians are still under the gun of dubious insurance practices
and now a growing pool of unstructured data
The most forward-thinking leaders of the group are calling for a focus on “outcomes” to guide reimbursement and policy models
rather than fee for service models of the past
While this is undoubtedly a positive next stage of our evolution as an industry
what strikes me as consistently missing from these discussions is any real focus on the patient-physician relationship. In the daily practice of healing
is there no room to explore the power of human-to-human interaction?
aside or lost cause… In the days of RVUs and number of patients seen per hour as core administrative policies driving hire and fire decisions… perhaps this is to be quietly accepted
I couldn’t help but feel there is a large hole in the room
TEHRAN – Royan Research Institute ranked among the world's top 10 centers based on the total number of publications investigating male infertility and assisted reproductive techniques (ART) during 2000 to 2019
based on the results of a study published in the international journal Andrologia
The article by researchers from eight American
Asian and European countries evaluates the total number of publications in male infertility and ART from 2000 to 2019
ART is considered one of the main options in treatment
and Royan Research Institute is one of the world leaders in this field
The results are obtained from the analysis of twenty years of work by researchers worldwide evaluating the number of articles
The research shows that Iranian researchers have had good collaborations with others in the international arena
which is an important issue in the future of the research process.
it has been shown that the trend of this type of research in the last twenty years has always been constant
and azoospermia (obstructive / non-obstructive) has been the most field of clinical studies (more than 60 percent).
using assisted reproductive techniques has reported over 47 percent success
assisted reproductive technologies currently play a special role in treating men's infertility
non-profit organization affiliated with the academic center for education
Royan is a research institute for reproductive biomedicine and infertility treatments; and a world's leading one in both research and treatment of this field
The institute also acts as a stem cell research leader and is one of the best clinics for infertility treatment
It has 46 scientific members and 186 lab technicians
said in October that foreign couples from neighboring and even European countries highly welcome infertility treatment in Iran because of the favorable cost and successful test results compared to other countries
Infertility is the inability to become pregnant after one year of intercourse without contraception involving a male and female partner
including some that medical intervention can treat.
Infertility occurs in 10 to 15 percent of couples
Causes of infertility can be female or male
Male infertility is responsible for 40 percent of infertility cases
while 40 percent are due to female infertility
and 10 percent are due to combined problems in both parts
both people do not have a problem according to the available tests
but they do not have children for unknown reasons
great strides have been made in diagnosing and treating infertility
and about 65 percent of infertile couples have had children using new methods
about 10 to 15 percent of couples are infertile
these couples went to European countries for treatment
but we entered into this issue in time and established more than 70 infertility centers
The cost of infertility treatment in Iran is about 50 percent lower than in European and American countries
And the success rate in the best centers is between 30 and 40 percent
