"We cannot wait for Parisians and holidaymakers to return," a wholesaler at the Rungis market explains
The month of June was "particularly quiet" and "almost catastrophic" due to very slow sales
the gloomy political situation in France and the unseasonable weather
Some professionals at Rungis were hoping that the Olympic Games would boost sales and make up for the delay at the start of the summer
June is usually a very important month for summer fruits
"disrupted consumption patterns and unfavourable weather" have taken a toll on sales

It is totally unpredictable," explained a wholesaler two months ago
the Olympic Games have not improved the situation
Parisians have almost all left for the provinces
It is a disaster for our business." Although some locals have stayed and tourists have come for the occasion
the "excessive restrictions put in place (terrace closure
traffic restrictions and security perimeters) to ensure the smooth running of the event have totally penalized trade." Another Rungis wholesaler explained he is "working to clear his stocks

and melons to more efficiently compare their purchases between the halls
Each “pavilion” is more than 600 feet long and separated from the others by bays of giant trucks
In the dairy hall, whose scent approximates what it might be like to live inside the hole of a Swiss cheese, I met Thierry Guyard, who owns a shop near Paris, settling up his weekly bill. “If I’m buying clothes, I try them on,” he said. “And it’s the same thing with cheese.” Rapping the butt end of a pocket knife on a wheel of Comté will give you a sense of its structural integrity; with a brick of Sakura chèvre
you can just take off the lid and examine it
many people do not try on clothes before they buy them
Old-timers in the meat and fish departments say the rise of the internet—and with it
more connected world—has begun to reduce traffic in the pavilions
said the market’s function as a trading floor has faded
moving from a congested central Paris location called Les Halles
Many Parisians thought of this move as if they had lost their baseball team to the suburbs—the central market had been in the same Paris location since the 12th century
The destruction of Les Halles was memorialized as a kind of urban tragedy
the Parisian version of New York demolishing Penn Station or Boston destroying the West End
This sense of nostalgia has two sources that aren’t entirely logically compatible
On the one hand there is the longing for the city as a site of production
There is regret about the displacement of those jobs
Émile Zola’s novel The Belly of Paris evokes this lost world in poetic detail: “The warm afternoon sun had softened the cheeses; the mold on the rinds was melting and glazing over with the rich colors of red copper verdigris
like wounds that have badly healed; under the oak leaves
which seemed to move up and down with the slow deep breathing of a man asleep.” A diorama of the grocers in a chapel of the adjacent Saint-Eustache church portrays them as exiles
but instead of their belongings on their carts
On the other there is the architectural regret for those grand iron-and-glass grocery halls
with their delicate metalwork and flying buttresses
a product (along with those famous boulevards) of Napoleon III’s urban renewal agenda
They were not only elegant and innovative structures in their own right; they are also easy to imagine now as galleries
and the other spaces of the postindustrial city
as similar structures have been adapted at the Parc de la Villette
these two alternate futures cannot coexist
The wholesale market could not have survived without modern infrastructure
Paris lost both its market and its buildings
Other urban markets have followed suit; New York’s Fulton Fish Market moved to the Bronx in 2005; Tokyo’s Tsukiji now holds its famous predawn tuna auctions at a more remote site on landfill in the Bay
It’s a dense social network of vendors and buyers who have worked together in some cases for generations
(Vanhamme is a third-generation fishmonger; Fauchère works with her father.) The older Rungis hands remember the younger ones as kids
The other threat to Rungis is the rise of France’s chain supermarkets
which employs more than 150,000 people and now has more than 1,800 locations
For the most part these are American-style stores
albeit with slightly more cheese and slightly smaller parking spaces
located on the fringes of French towns and cities
All have their own independent supply chains that have made them the de facto retailer for most cost-conscious French buyers
and they have both caused and taken advantage of the decline of small-town French commerce
highway-adjacent shopping districts that have risen around these anchors now consume more than 70 percent of French household spending
it is Rungis—that prototypical example of the suburbanization of core city activities—that serves as the bulwark for all the Main Street commerce that gives Paris its flavor
On Thursday morning, a group of journalists met Rungis boss Stéphane Layani for breakfast in one of the market’s cafés. The CEO, dressed in a crisp blue suit and tie, insists on an organic Côtes du Rhône to accompany the meal. The waiters furnish croissants, pains au chocolat, strawberries, cherries, and cantaloupe, smoked salmon tartines, grilled chicken, rare steak, and finally, a tête de veau
who is gearing up for a gala dinner with Emmanuel Macron
and Mohammed bin Salman at the Louvre (Rungis footed the catering bill)
cites a number of things that are working in Rungis’ favor—the urge to buy local
to understand the supply chain—and none that aren’t
such as the cost-of-living crisis that has driven much of the conflict in French politics of late

and is closed by the time most people are just getting ready for their first cup of coffee
The fish and shellfish in the pavilion come from seas and oceans around world
to be sold to the restaurants and markets of Paris and beyond
whelks and scallops still in their coral pink shells — just about any sea creature you could name is on display
The pavilion is just one of many in Paris’ vast Rungis Marche International (Rungis International Market)
The market is divided into five sectors or market areas — fruits and vegetables
dairy and delicatessen and flowers and plants — and these sectors include the pavilions
multiple buildings — including 21 restaurants — and parking areas
more than 12,000 employees make their way to Rungis alongside 3,000 trucks
Cheese lovers will find their paradise at Rungis’ dairy pavilion
which features displays of huge wheels of hard-rind cheeses stacked high alongside boxed wheels of delicate soft cheeses
Nine different pavilions house the incredibly varied and colorful selection of fruits and vegetables
and the poultry and game pavilion holds duck
pheasants and wild birds I had only ever read about
Some of the more esoteric fowl goes to the Michelin-starred restaurants of Paris
while others are sold to more humble establishments
is frequently on Paris menus and in poultry counters
It’s like being at the receiving door of a huge steakhouse: It’s full of hanging sides of beef
ready to be grilled and served up to hungry diners
Two pavilions are devoted to pork and pork products alone
as the meat is so widely used for France’s famed head-to-tail charcuterie
When I really knew that I was in the belly of Paris
was the moment I started walking the aisles of the “tripperie” pavilion
This is where it’s clear that offal — the organs and byproducts of a butchered animal
the use of which is almost gone from mainstream American markets and restaurants — is still a popular restaurant and home-cooked item in France
The origins of the market go back to the 11th century
when a section in the heart of Paris that became known as Les Halles was set aside for wholesale food vendors
Narrow streets were packed in the early hours with people and carts
with trucks moving food into and out of the city
a rite of passage for young Americans was to have onion soup before the sun was up at one of the workers’ restaurants in the heart of the market
surrounded by the busy coming and going of animal carcasses flung over shoulders
the wholesale market at Rungis — officially opened in 1969 — is restricted to wholesale purchasers
and visiting is only available with a certified guide
The market might lack the romance of old Paris
but the food is just as wondrous to behold
The market itself offers guided tours twice per month that include transportation to and from the center of Paris and a Rungis “worker’s breakfast,” which consists of plates of charcuterie
The tour is 80 euro per person and can be booked online
Private tours for a minimum of four people can be arranged by La Route des Gourmets

and also biowaste composting and methanation
Fully electric collection vehicles cutting carbon emissions
SUEZ’s fleet of fully electric vehicles will handle waste collection and on-site logistics
Drivers will also be trained in eco-driving techniques
These initiatives will reduce annual carbon emissions sixfold from 159 tons of CO2

An ambitious access-to-employment programme to help people get back to work
is also involved in delivering this contract
It will strengthen the operational teams by offering various assignments to long-term job seekers
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Rungis Market
said: “This contract with SUEZ opens up new possibilities for the management of the Rungis Market’s waste
As the number one French public service operator in the food sector
the Market needs to take a lead in how it processes and recovers food and non-food waste
and I firmly believe that by joining forces
we will achieve our objectives and fulfil our CSR commitments.”.
On Sunday, September 25, AP News shared news that Paris' historic Rungis International Market, one of the largest wholesale markets in the world, caught fire. Originally constructed during the 5th century, per Rungis International
the market's history is deeply rooted in the city's antiquity
King Louis VI brought the market to the city's center
where it was expanded and given the name "Les Halles" in 1181
The massive Les Halles market went on to become known as the "belly of Paris," as coined by Émile Zola (via Dezeen). With its many buildings offering culinary staples like bread, cheese
hundreds of thousands of tons of fruits and vegetables passed underneath Les Halles' glass roof and through its column-lined alley each year
the city's traffic quickly made it difficult to access
and it was decided that the market would be moved outside of Paris
a 578-acre structure in the southern suburbs
Rungis Market opened its doors 10 years later. The market employed over 12,000 people and supplied 35% of the meat and half of the produce and seafood to the entire city of Paris as of 2019, according to Explore Paris – that is until it erupted in flames earlier this week
While the cause of the fire remains unknown
the impact the destruction will have on the Les Halles Manadar market operators is certain
Due to the warehouse's size and the sheer number of wholesalers within it
relocating while rebuilding the damaged area could be challenging
"I've known these people for 30 years and sympathize with them ..
They saw their life's work go up in smoke all at once
there's also little room on the market to set up elsewhere."

After more than 10 years working alongside his father Gabriel Burunat
then president of Commercial Fruits at Rungis
William Burunat created Nueva Vista in 2021
this human-sized company has established itself as a specialist in avocados
with a particular focus on the Peruvian origin
"Our aim is to continue what we did with my father
but with a few changes." Nueva Vista distributes its products to French wholesalers
as well as supermarkets in France and in Europe
William Burunat assesses the first part of the avocado campaign and the outlook for the coming weeks
"The avocado market has gradually recovered and become healthier" "Overall
the Peruvian Hass avocado season is running at a deficit
with some sources reporting almost 20% less than last year
although these figures have yet to be confirmed," explains William Burunat
This drop in volumes is due to the El Niño weather phenomenon
"After a more favorable start to the season than last year
mainly due to an earlier end to the Spanish campaign
the market became more complicated around the middle of April
with volumes accelerating and accumulating in Europe
with a peak in arrivals of mostly small sizes at the beginning of May (between 500 and 600 containers from Peru unloaded per week in Europe)
The market has gradually recovered and stabilized
with a drop in export volumes from May onwards
the market is very tight and prices are high due to the lack of merchandise."
The outlook for the rest of the campaign is "rather good"
"There should not be any major production peaks
and the Peruvian regions will arrive later in the season
"The challenge for our sector today is adaptability and flexibility"The El Niño phenomenon has not only affected avocados
and the sector will have to demonstrate resilience
"El Niño has also had a major impact on other crops such as blueberries
Nueva Vista remains France's leading importer of pomegranates from Peru this season
Weather disturbances have been affecting more and more regions
"These are phenomena that cannot be predicted
The challenge for our sector today is flexibility
We have to be able to adapt to different market situations resulting from the climate
but the avocado remains a promising fruit whose consumption continues to grow
Sales are good and avocados' popularity is on the rise."
dynamic and passionate" Nueva Vista team intends to offer the best Peruvian products

FeatureThe world's largest fresh produce market
feeds 18 million people and has an annual turnover of €10,299 million
The sprawling market town on the southern outskirts of Paris never sleeps
the uninterrupted waltz of lorries and delivery vans under the dim light of the street lamps is hypnotic
The vehicles whirl around at breakneck speed – Rungis has its own laws and its own highway code – in this strange city crisscrossed by avenues
covered with warehouses and swarming with handlers of everything from crates of tomatoes to a carcass of beef
The world's largest fresh produce market is a behemoth without equal: 232 hectares in surface area
more than 1,200 companies and almost 13,000 employees
according to the latest activity report published in 2022
more than 1.7 million tonnes of food products processed – 68% of them fruits and vegetables
the Ile-de-France region – by far France's most populous and where 65% of buyers are concentrated – and a good part of the rest of the country would have a hard time filling their plates
"I'm here to feed 18 million people," said Stéphane Layani
as he sipped a double espresso at La Cantine du Troquet
open to the public like the 18 others at Rungis (purchases from the market are reserved for professionals)
offering soft madeleines and prizewinning pâté en croûte under the guidance of chef Stéphane Bertignac
with the latter representing 15% of annual sales

— The Ladies Library Association planned to honor finalists of their sponsored event
Artists worked to commemorate 100 years since the passage of the 19th amendment
which allowed women to vote in the United States
The winning design from Sniedze Janson Rungis is called "Through Hardship to the Stars."
Rungis studied art at Western Michigan University and the School of Art Institute in Chicago
She told Newschannel 3 her design was inspired both by the history of the women's movement in Kalamazoo
alongside her own personal experiences as a contemporary woman
The title of her work "Through Hardship to the Stars," was chosen because of her own mother
who Rungis said was a personal inspiration
Ladies' Library members planned to showcase the design in a large window on the second floor of their building
The Library expected to partner with a local stained-glass artist to produce the design
The group hoped the new window would be completed by Spring of 2020
Organizers said all four finalists and their designs would be honored during an open house from 4 to 6 p.m

The French wholesale market has recruited environmental services group Suez to implement measures to boost the sorting and recovery of waste at the market
Rungis International Market in Paris has awarded Suez
a seven-year contract worth €31m aimed at increasing the sorting and recovery of food waste and non-food waste at the market
Suez has been deploying awareness solutions
The main objective is reportedly to double the share of waste sorted by 2025
This new partnership to recover waste is part of the Rungis’s CSR strategy
which aims to reduce the market’s environmental footprint.
Suez has been supporting Rungis’s management authority

It's hard to know where to start when describing the Rungis International Food Market
It's bigger than the principality of Monaco

Rungis market is its own city -- a city that lives at night
It's no surprise that the world's largest food market is in Paris
Rungis market has brought food to Parisians from the countryside and now from the whole world

"French gastronomy comes from these products

"We used to sell veal liver with sweetbread
but not the same quantity as 10 years before," he says
which have been scooped out and look more like pale veal masks
and explains the parts that people used to eat: the cheek
Tongues and brains are still selling at Rungis
And though the market has lost much of the antiquated
and a fascinating place to observe one of the world's great food cultures

it’s safe to assume the 26-year-old can break into the UFC middleweight division’s Top 10
But Imavov believes that a win isn’t enough these days to make that jump from a rising star to a credentialed top contender
Hype when his name gets mentioned at the commentator’s desk or the flood of comments online when a future fight is announced
he will try and improve on his last two performances and earn a highlight of his own against Buckley in front of his French supporters in Accor Arena.
“I won’t move up much,” Imavov said regarding his place in the UFC middleweight division if he’s able to defeat Buckley in Paris
but putting on a show is also important; it will give me more hype
It will definitely motivate me; it will be good for me
and my last fight was even better because there was a crowd and a lot of noise
this fight will be even better than that.”

The service appears unlikely to be making a comeback any time soon
The refrigerated rail transport service that linked the Rungis market in Paris with Perpignan near the Spanish border ceased operations on June 28th
the return of the service is very much in doubt
The end of the well-established ‘Primeurs’ fresh produce train was met with sadness by proponents of rail freight in particular
the number of trains per day was also cut from two to one
French railway journal Lettre du Cheminot reports that the Primeurs train is one of the 23 routes that Fret SNCF had to abandon so that a heavy fine from the EU for breaking rules on state aid could be avoided
there is no visible interest from operators in bringing the Primeurs train back to life
The service uses 34 ageing refrigerated trailers that are at the end of their lifespan
while the loading-unloading model is not efficient
There is nonetheless hope that a new rail terminal planned for Rungis market could change the situation
The French Ministry of Transport did launch a call for expressions of interest on 24th May to find a new operator to relaunch the service
which would also transport other goods in addition to fresh produce
hopes of resurrecting the service in early 2026
CEO of Europorte and President of the rail freight trade body 4F Alliance
“For as long as the fast rail line between Perpignan and Rungis is incomplete
no company that wants to offer a quality service and make money will have any interest in doing it.”
Doutrebente added that there was no opportunity to use state funding to subsidise the service
which ultimately means that for the time being at least
the fresh produce bound for Rungis will be transported by road instead

it's my job to help them with often riper fruit
But I also help Dutch and Belgian companies with their surpluses."

There was panic yesterday in Rungis when a fire broke out at France's largest fresh produce market
A massive column of black smoke hung over the city all day
It was caused by a blaze that broke out in the late morning in the heart of the MIN de Rungis
in an 8,000m2 fruit and vegetable warehouse
About 100 firefighters and more than 30 fire trucks battled the flames
there were no injuries and the fire was quickly brought under control
the blaze completely destroyed the Halles Mandar packing warehouse
"Our warehouse burnt down," confirmed the Les Halles Mandar group's employees in a LinkedIn post
213 people work in shifts there to prepare vegetable
and herb orders for thousands of customers from the restaurant
after which flames quickly swept through the building
"The fire destroyed the area where we prepare custom orders for our clients in the hospitality and other sectors," the president of Halles Mandar
"We're shocked but glad there were no injuries."
Stéphane Layani released a press statement yesterday: "As CEO of Rungis International Market
I'd like to express my solidarity and support for Les Halles Mandar
which has been severely affected by this fire
This warehouse's destruction is a great loss
The Rungis market will resume operations tomorrow
such a strategy befalling a vendor affects the entire market at its core."
Although Halles Mandar cannot fill its clients' orders at Rungis today or for a while
The issue is central to this morning's talks
say business should continue as usual and that the fire had "absolutely no impact" on the physical market
The affected warehouse is also quite far from the trading area
Nico Schaft of 888 Fruitcompany confirms that
He has been trading at this Paris wholesale market for years
"The fruit and vegetable supply hasn't been endangered
The fire was limited to the Halles Mandar building
which is at the exit of the wholesale market
about 300 meters from the wholesale market
"I've known these people for 30 years and sympathize with them
They used to be the only company with Carmel herbs in the market
They specialize in supplying hotels and restaurants in Paris
so they also buy a lot from the other wholesalers at Rungis
there's also little room on the market to set up elsewhere," Nico concludes
provided the apples necessary to make a giant apple pie
On the picture: Lucile Sene and Marine Lapierre
Rungis’s performance was entered in the Guinness Book of Records
for accommodating 2,200 people around a 1,316-foot long table
across two pavilions of fruits and vegetables
A world record that the wholesale market wanted to achieve for its 50th anniversary
Rungis shattered therefore the previous record of the world’s longest table (1,056 feet long) achieved in 2017 on Réunion Island
the famous French school of gastronomy and hotel management
“the finest professionals: the best apprentices
the best French workers and interprofessionals took turns to beautifully offer products carefully selected by the market’s wholesalers,” as shared on Linkedin by Stéphane Layani
a huge seafood platter and a giant apple pie from Blue Whale were among the items of this gargantuan lunch menu.
The many commentaries on social networks testify to the great success of this historic event
we were served quality products from the Rungis market of course
This huge table brought together guests from various sectors
I think everybody really had a great time.”
The MIN market of Rungis has therefore set the bar high for its 50th anniversary
One might wonder what new record the market will try to break for its 100th anniversary

Exotic fruits are very popular around the Christmas holidays
wholesalers and importers of the Rungis market mainly offer the Mauritius and Reunion Island origins
which are sold at approximately 9 €/kg [9.6 USD/kg] for fresh lychees imported by plane and 3.5 €/kg [3.7 USD/kg] for the lychees imported by boat
an import company that stores its products on the Rungis market
chose to bring fresh lychees by plane from Madagascar
we started the campaign on November 28th and should end it on January 7th,” explains Cédric Celina of Ach Celina
“There is no point in starting the campaign early
I could have started on the 23rd of November
but the quality - color and sugar level - would not have been optimal.”
Ach Celina is satisfied with both quality and demand
“It is true that we are getting orders of 2 to 4 kg this year
the demand remains similar to last year for this origin
We continue to import this niche product because of its quality
There is also a clear demand in France for this festive product
fewer and fewer importers at Rungis work this origin
which reinforces the ‘niche’ aspect of the product.”

It's one of the most important places in France
so famous that it’s routinely referenced by a single word: Rungis
On Friday French farmers threatened to block it
potentially disrupting food supplies to the capital
Its full name is Marché International de Rungis
and even that doesn’t do it complete justice to the world’s largest wholesale fresh produce market
providing employment for more than 12,000 people and business for more than 1,200 firms
the Pantry of Paris - or Le ventre de Paris (the belly of Paris) as writer Emile Zola nicknamed it
It’s where wholesalers and restaurateurs stock up on fruit
and supplies daily fresh food produce for a quarter of the population of France
Waste from the market is recycled and energy generated by the incinerator is used to heat the market and nearby Orly Airport
Its current location is about 20km south of Paris
if you have driven south out of the city you will certainly have seen signs to it
It opened in its current location in 1969 – but its history dates back more than 1,000 years in Paris
The first known sketches of a major food market in Paris – Marché Palu – were drawn in the fifth century
which is today more famous as Hotel de Ville
a commercial area at the crossroads of Rue Saint-Honoré
Its history here is established in the area’s new name: Les Halles
which is now a largely underground shopping mall near the central Metro station of very similar name
Emile Zola coined its nickname in his 1873 novel Le Ventre de Paris
but it had been known for more than two decades that it was too small to serve the needs of the rapidly expanding population in Paris and Île-de-France
was chosen as the venue for what would become the Marché International de Rungis
It opened a decade later – despite objections from food merchants in Paris
who did not like the idea of travelling from the city centre
after a four-day relocation operation dubbed the “déménagement du siècle” (moving of the century)
and 400 removal lorries were involved in the operation
and the army was brought in to oversee the move
which caused severe disruption in Paris for several days
Its large site with many refrigerated areas means that it serves as an emergency overflow morgue for the city of Paris
Some bodies were stored on the site after the heatwave of 2003 in which 15,000 people - many of them elderly and living alone - died
During the first wave of the Covid pandemic in 2020 space was readied at Rungis to store bodies
but in the event it was not needed and the city's morgues coped

the activity is in full swing 7.5 miles south of the capital
Between 3 and 5 o’clock in the morning at the MIN of Rungis
About 3,000 supply trucks converge to the toll
in order to supply the 1,200 companies gathered on an area of 234 hectares
producers and importers receive fresh fruits and vegetables
which represent 70% of the arrivals on the physical market
a true spectacle of colors contrasts with the darkness of the night
purple and soft green catch both our sight and smell
The sweet scent coming from these mountains of fresh fruits and vegetables awaken our still groggy taste buds

It would be easy to let our mind wander through the smells and colors of the wholesale aisles and to be caught by the lively atmosphere of the Carreau
bicycles and trolleys pass at a steady pace through the main aisle of the buildings
pats on the back and signs of affection that reflect the authentic and warm atmosphere so characteristic of the MIN of Rungis
The professionals of the market work passionately to feed the people of Paris and the entire country
the merchandise transits at a frantic pace
the merchandise slowly disappears and silence falls
the only witnesses of the morning frenzy which will start again the very next day

2022Thanks to this successful launch and the success of the first 4,000 deliveries

the Tuber melanosporum black winter truffle
There is also a wide choice of organic products and a growing share of local products
as well as fruit and vegetables harvested within a radius of 100 kilometers around Paris.
The rungismarket.com catalog constantly evolves according to the seasons
The selection is made by more than 50 specialized wholesalers
with perfect knowledge acquired over time of the products and the needs of catering professionals
Their experience is reflected in the dynamic offer and the constant search for differentiation while guaranteeing the availability of the products.
From high gastronomy to more classic cuisine
each professional can find the products that meet their expectations
This accuracy of the offer is one of the particularities of the e-commerce site of the Rungis market
The objective is to gradually make 10,000 references available by the end of the year.
“This virtual extension of the International Market of Rungis is a turning point in our history,” explains Stéphane Layani
“It shows our capacity to adapt and innovate in order to meet the expectations of both the market’s wholesalers and the buyers
and it will be another way for us to demonstrate our uniqueness and know-how.”
A service operated by a cutting-edge groupIn addition to this offer of exceptional quality and quantity
rungismarket.com also is a technological and logistical feat
To offer buyers an experience that is fully adapted to their needs
rungismarket.com has brought together the best companies in each field of expertise
- Califrais pilots the projects and deploys the digital tools that help orchestrate the operations with the various stakeholders
a European leader in temperature-controlled transport and logistics
is responsible for dedicated customer service
A team of experts in artificial intelligence and mathematics is working at Califrais on innovative algorithms to optimize flows at the level of the Rungis market
In order to cope with the scale of this unique project
the teams work together with prestigious institutions such as CNRS
which is the largest laboratory in France and one of the world’s leading laboratories in mathematical research
everywhere in France and soon in EuropeBy grouping these companies under the same banner
the e-commerce site of Rungis can offer a unique customer experience
the flexibility of the services is pushed to the maximum
each order placed before midnight will be delivered at 6 o’clock the next day
the order is delivered in less than 48 hours at a convenient time for the client
Another token of flexibility is the fact that the orders are pooled: all products - meat
and vegetables - are grouped to make only one delivery
this means visibility and precious time saved.
“The launch of the platform is the result of years of work at the heart of the Rungis market
as well as with the clients,” explains Pierre Lévy
“By deploying our innovative technologies to the market
we are taking the supply of fresh produce to a new dimension by facilitating exchanges and making it easy for all food professionals to develop their activity.”
An eco-responsible approachPooling the orders from the Rungis market is a first in the e-commerce of fresh produce for professionals
this approach is also responsible in the sense that it reduces greenhouse gas emissions considerably
it is no less than 800 tons of CO² that are avoided per year
an order that usually requires the use of 6 trucks can now be grouped into a single order and just one vehicle.
“The growth of e-commerce pushes for new innovative and secure solutions in terms of transport and logistics,” explains Marc Vettard
“Being an active operator on the Rungis market
we are proud to take part in the launch of this new platform
alongside partners recognized for their expertise
Our teams are mobilized to deliver an efficient service that meets the needs of all parties (sellers
restaurants) for whom delivery is a key element.”

Over thirty years ago the famous Paris Halls (Les Halles)
which had been in the centre of Paris since 1183
around 6 kilometres south of the French capital
With a direct connection to the road and railway and close to the airport
vegetables and flowers are now transported to and from this 254 ha market
Many fresh products change hands during the night at Rungis
On a total surface of 234 hectares in total
vegetables and other fresh products are traded annually
City within a cityRungis has 1,200 companies with almost 12,000 employees
and provide an annual turnover of over 7 billion Euro
the supermarkets are also increasingly common in the customer base
This results in 25,000 trucks coming to this fresh market every day
Fruits and vegetable form the bulk of the fresh supply at Rungis with ten halls
Last year a special organic hall was also opened
The meat sales were mostly finished on Friday
as they mainly take place at the start of the week
The French like fresh and take time to have a fresh meal," emphasises the French guide
"Potatoes and onions are stored for a week at most
strawberries two days and fish twelve hours
We can sometimes store them for longer but that's not our business."
dutch practice MVRDV has unveiled their design for the ‘pushed slab’ office building at zac gare de rungis in the 13th arrondissement of paris
the 19,000 square meter building will be one of the first low energy buildings to be realized in france; with low energy consumption and an energy production of approximately 200.000kwh per year
construction of the 35 million euro building commissioned by french project developer icade promotion is expected to start 2011
the pushed slab is located between two completely different urban grids: the dense city fabric of blocks and streets in the north and the loose urban fabric in the south with its clear defined and straightforward infrastructure
the design is based on the requested office program and the energy requirements
the project combines proven energy efficiency technologies with individual office floors and outside spaces such as patios
the building is highly flexible offering three cores and a central lobby; it can be rented out to one or various tenants without structural changes
south view of gare de rungis office building along the boulevard kellerman
the building is located on a former rail embankment of approximately 4.150 square meters
a slab shaped volume of 150 m long and 21 m wide
an opening in the volume preserves the view of a historic building
to create this urban window and to enhance the urban quality of the neighborhood
the slab is ‘pushed’ until it breaks
this pushing act creates a distortion of the floors
offering multiple terraces which can be directly accessed from the work areas as well as from the external staircases
the urban window offers a large terrace on the second level
the terrace and the balconies will be furnished with trees planted in large pots
offering employees a friendly environment to relax
the building has two faces: a calm side in dialogue with the urban fabric of the north side of paris
offering optimal sunning and light control of the inner spaces
to contribute to the sustainable development and taking the impact of deforestation into account
the climate is controlled by natural ventilation; 1500 square meters of solar panels on the roof provide renewable energy and a grey water circuit will be applied
blinds will be integrated in the south facade and in the cuts
the building will be insulated from the outside in order to reduce thermal bridges
the accumulation of these proven reliable techniques results in a highly efficient low energy building which leads to an energy consumption of 49 kwh per square meter per year

the management company of Rungis International Market in Paris
is poised to begin his four-year presidency of the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM)
Layani's inauguration will take place on the occasion of the WUWM Conference
which takes place on 25 June in Florence with the theme
'The distribution of fresh produce in the world post-Covid-19: challenges
opportunities and avenues to ensure resilient and sustainable food systems and access to healthy food”
chairman of the Chinese Association of Wholesale markets (CAWA)
calling him a 'great and dedicated WUWM leader'
'I fully understand that now is the time for him to focus on CAWA’s and China’s challenges,' said Layani
'and I am grateful to still have him as a special advisor.”
Layani said that wholesale markets should be proud of their work during the Covid-19 crisis
it is because the wholesale markets were there,” he stated
He added that consumers increasingly wanted to eat fresh
local produce with a lower environmental impact and with a guarantee of traceability and safety
were the only ones with the structure to provide for this demand
Layani is a former student of the elite ENA school
After creating the Economic Committee for Medicines
before becoming deputy director of the Consular Chambers
After passing through the General Inspectorate of Finance
before being appointed chairman and CEO of Semmaris in 2012
He has held the role of acting chairman of WUWM since July 2020
has just received its first shipments of its new cherry tomato variety: the mini Red-Egg
Given the success of the Red-Egg (elongated tomato produced in the Netherlands) in recent years
we decided to introduce this new reference on the market
is characterized by a very sweet taste with a Brix level of 9 to 11
We also selected it for its crunchiness and the fact that it can keep for up to 14 days
we have also been trying to develop products that stand out for their taste and their quality
We want to promote the work and the efforts of our producers and therefore make sure that price is not the main reason for buying,” explains Guilhem Flammen
“This variety completes our range since our offer did not include any elongated cherry tomatoes yet
We sell it mainly in the Paris region through the Rungis market
where the first feedback has been very positive
We have exclusivity on the production in the Netherlands and Belgium
and we are able to provide our clients with mini Red-Egg tomatoes from week 14 to week 46
The production currently spreads over 3 hectares
Depending on the results we will obtain this year
we could double the production area in 2022.”
there are very few elongated cherry tomatoes on the market
“The demand is high for this type of product these days
so we have no problem selling the mini Red-Egg
The demand was slower due to the unfavorable weather and a consumption pattern that was different from last year
It was therefore difficult to anticipate the market evolution for all actors of the sector
But we now observe that the tomato volumes available on the market have decreased significantly
the peak of production was at the end of June
We hope that prices will increase in order to better remunerate our producers.”

Promoting seven wholesalers on the Rungis marketThe delegation for Rungis was made of 4 members of the Apple Brotherhood
producers and sales representatives of the different commercial structures of the production basin of this PGI
The guests arrived in Paris by train the day before and after a very nice evening
Alp’Union and Fruits et Compagnie had selected seven wholesalers for the visit: Desmettre
The visit took place in a friendly and festive atmosphereThe meeting with the wholesalers was the opportunity to talk about the quality and characteristics of the Golden PGI
the story of the Alpes de Haute-Durance apples and the history of the Brotherhood
strolling through the very busy market in a friendly and festive atmosphere
They were solicited many times to talk about the Brotherhood
which product it represents and the reasons for their visit to Rungis that day
The wholesalers all took pictures with the members of the Brotherhood and all seemed delighted with this special moment at their booth
Some wholesalers had really made an effort to highlight the Golden PGI
Some hosts were also present to make customers taste the apple.
Constructive exchanges between producers and wholesalersAs for the producers who came to the event
they were surprised by the size of the Rungis market and the multitude of products on offer
This visit was also an opportunity for them to reaffirm their position as producers in a highly competitive context and meeting with the wholesalers who sell their apples was also very constructive.
The day ended at the restaurant with a meal shared with the same wholesalers
The members of the Brotherhood took advantage of the situation to induct its last three members: Alexandre Dorison of Monloup for Fruits et Compagnie
Joseph Desmettre of Desmettre for Alp’Union and Jérôme Chazelay of Bratigny for Blue Whale
A diploma and a trophy were presented to them to congratulate them for their involvement in marketing of the Golden PGI
An apple grown on 1,200 hectares of orchards by 90 producersThe president of the PGI
recalled in her speech some figures concerning the PGI and Red Label
The apple of the Alpes de Haute-Durance is grown by 90 producers
on 1,200 ha of orchards spread over two departments (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Hautes-Alpes)
It is also an apple whose Brix degree is higher than 12
She also recalled that the Thiault Index - a combination of refractometric index (sugar content) and acidity for the Red Label should be above 180 before November 1st
above 175 from November 1st to November 31st
The day ended with the viewing of the new PAHD film
shot this year with producers who express their attachment to the orchards and present the PGI apple of the Haute-Durance orchards
Good volumes despite the difficult seasonFor this harvest
all the committed producers meet the desired organoleptic criteria
Marie-Pierre Liautaud also recalled that this year
in spite of the difficult pedoclimatic conditions for fruit growers
the volumes of Golden GPI are good with a particularly marked coloration revealing a pronounced pinkish veil
