France — Sylvie Casenave-Péré has been in politics for exactly 10 days and she is already in the thick of France’s election race against a high-profile adversary
The 65-year-old packaging executive is running for a seat in parliament with President Emmanuel Macron’s liberals
That pits her directly against Marie-Caroline Le Pen
the sister of far-right leader Marine Le Pen
whose far-right National Rally party is on the ascendant
On a quiet Monday morning in the small town of Sablé-sur-Sarthe
Casenave-Péré is handing out leaflets and greeting shoppers with gusto: “Send me to the National Assembly
This new recruit is part of a desperate push from Macron’s centrist coalition to hold back the tide of the far right in the region of Sarthe in the two-round snap election on June 30 and July 7
Sarthe was seen as a rock-steady bastion of center-right conservatism
it is a land of rolling hills and stately medieval churches
whose presidential aspirations were torpedoed by a corruption conviction
partly on the back of growing grievances over a rural-urban divide
and investment and businesses have moved away
And Sarthe is one of the many rural constituencies that might send far-right representatives to the National Assembly for the first time
Casenave-Péré was undaunted about taking on a household name
insisting she — unlike Marie-Caroline Le Pen — was the local candidate in a region where that still counted
she has been sent here but she doesn’t know the region
it’s a snub against the Sarthe residents,” she said
Casenave-Péré had no qualms about taking up the nomination
despite it being a last-minute scramble — Macron’s shock snap election announcement came on June 9
as it became clear his party was trounced by the National Rally in the EU election
“They called me on the eve of the deadline for candidacies
and asked me whether I wanted to run [for the National Assembly]
Though the constituency had “been traumatized” by “the disasters of the right,” she hoped voters would recognize her local roots
I don’t know her,” said shop owner Nicolas Forget
“I don’t know anything any more … I’m undecided really
there have been too many promises that haven’t been honored,” he said
National Rally’s lead candidate Jordan Bardella took home 32 percent of the vote
compared to 19 percent for Macron’s coalition
And it looks like the same could now happen in the national election
Recent nationwide polls suggest the National Rally and its conservative allies could get 35.5 percent of the vote
compared to 29.5 percent for the left-wing alliance and 19.5 percent for Macron’s coalition
Martine and Philippe are enjoying a morning coffee and a catch-up
Both want to vote for the National Rally in the first round of the parliamentary election on Sunday
but voted for Macron in the last presidential election
who did not want to give her surname because of the stigma still attached to the anti-immigrant National Rally
“My main concern is purchasing power … I can no longer buy meat
I spend €100 and hardly have anything to show for it,” she said
And Le Pen’s tireless efforts to detoxify her party
“Marine Le Pen appears calmer than the rest
all the other candidates are at each others’ throats,” Martine said
a sense that life is not as good as before
Both Martine and Philippe are aware the National Rally probably won’t be able to deliver on their promises
The success of the National Rally is a seismic shift in the region’s political traditions
with strong local barons such as François Fillon … and quite a traditional
right-wing rural electorate,” said Serge Danilo
chief editor for the local daily newspaper
Fillon’s own fortunes died in a fake job scandal — over which he was fined and sentenced to a suspended jail term — after he was found to have paid his wife generously for a fictitious political assistant role
the National Rally almost captured Fillon’s constituency during the last parliamentary elections in 2022
but lost to a left-wing candidate by a handful of votes.
The dominance of the right also ebbed with the departure of big employers such the white goods manufacturers Moulinex
as well as smaller factories scattered across the countryside
the rise of the far-right kicked off in the areas furthest away from city centers
As Macron’s party successfully siphoned off center-right voters
“many of the right-wing leaders simply gave up,” he said
The traditional conservative right has been badly wounded by its own infighting
the party of presidents such as Charles de Gaulle and Jacques Chirac
has effectively split over whether to team up with the National Rally in Sunday’s election
For more polling data from across Europe visit POLITICO Poll of Polls
Earlier in June, the leader of Les Républicains Éric Ciotti sealed a deal with the National Rally ensuring that his allies don’t run against the far right in agreed constituencies — leading to a spat that has weakened the conservative camp
Marie-Caroline Le Pen — who declined to give an interview for this story — is running in Sarthe on a joint ticket with a former Les Républicains party member
“The other Les Républicains candidates will fight gloriously until the end
against Macron and against the National Rally
They will hold the candle until it goes out,” said National Rally MEP Philippe Olivier
Last year, Bardella launched his “Conquest of the West” campaign in Sarthe
the far right hopes to complete its takeover of the France’s conservative countryside
The National Rally is also looking even further afield to rack up wins: toward the west
where historically the far right has been weak
So when the French president called a snap election
who were already heavily mobilized to test new political boundaries
“[They] started their campaign for the European election as early as October
hammering home the message: ‘We’re here
we’re ready to govern,’” Danilo said

The energy upgrade of Reverdy middle school in Sablé-sur-Sarthe
involves renovation of the external cladding and modernisation of the heating and lighting facilities
The goal of the Department of Sarthe is to provide middle schools with the best possible tools to ensure that students in Sarthe have the keys to success
a plaque will be hung in each school with the motto of the French Republic
The project has improved the energy performance of Reverdy middle school in Sablé-sur-Sarthe
in the context of action to upgrade middle schools and secondary schools
The goal was to increase the efficiency of real energy consumption
while ensuring a comfortable temperature in the buildings to accommodate students and staff
the building has a total net floor area of 10,243 m² and can hold 560 students
The project has enabled us to improve the building insulation and modernise the technical equipment
The goal was to shift from Class B (initial) to Class A consumption
with a 71% reduction in overall consumption
The works particularly targeted the treatment of building facades
the performance of building cladding components and the modernisation of heating and lighting facilities
an assessment of the initial situation was carried out
The energy audit recommended repair of the gas boiler room
thermal insulation of the entire school from the outside
and the modernisation and management of technical equipment for heating
The primary energy consumption (PEC) of the school was evaluated at 93 kW h (of primary energy)/m²/year (Class B)
The final PEC was established at 27 kW h/m²/year
These works enabled an annual reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 85.18 CO2 equivalent tonnes
the works involved external insulation of the facades
insulation of the terrace roofing and the high ceiling of the bike shed
The boilers were replaced with two gas condensation units of 390 kW
as well as a regulation system (building management system)
The site was occupied while the works took place
and provisional classrooms were installed on site
the project boosted employment in the building companies involved in these works: plumbing
the project has strengthened the appeal of the area by restoring a positive image and ensuring the comfortable use by children and staff of an important building dedicated to teaching and education in the town of Sablé-sur-Sarthe
Describing the importance of the work undertaken by the Departmental Council of Sarthe
the former Academy Director Jean-Marc Milville highlighted the results of studies showing that there is a better atmosphere when facilities are in good condition
violence and deteriorations have been reduced in these facilities"
this project enabled a reduction in public expenditure by reducing the costs of energy consumption required for the use of this building for public use
The "Energy upgrade of the Reverdy middle school in Sablé-sur-Sarthe" project received a total investment of EUR 1 807 370; the contribution of the European Regional Development Fund was EUR 722 948

Having seen a great deal of theatre over many years
I can say with some certainty that I have never seen anything quite like Dimanche
there is a great deal of wonderful movement
The piece is set in the near future of a climate affected world
and shows us two different scenarios: wildlife reporters trying to capture the last three remaining species on Earth
and a family trying to maintain their normal in the face of impending ecological wipe-out
Technology is used to great effect to reproduce Antarctic conditions
a house being destroyed by a storm bringing tornadoes and tsunamis
creates shows that combine theatre of objects
founded twenty years ago by Durieux and Hayraud
Aurélie Deloche and Gaëlle Marras are magnificent
Tenret takes the audience through every emotion
not least when the polar bear cub is swept away from her mother on an ice floe
adds past pop hits under the genuine sounds of raging storms and splitting ice
transforms from models being manipulated into the real thing
plunges the audience in and out of the fear zone throughout
more credits for different technical effects
and they should all take credit for what is a stunning and outstanding piece of theatre
Dimanche was presented as part of MimeLondon 2025

A train carrying 1,200 passengers was halted for several hours in the west of France yesterday (July 11) after several passengers became unwell and suffered breathing difficulties.
The TGV service between Paris and Nantes was stopped at around 20:00 in Sablé-sur-Sarthe (Sarthe)
with chemical experts and doctors attending the scene.
all situated in the same coach of the train
reported symptoms including sore throats and trouble breathing.
where the passengers who fell sick were located
Between 15 and 20 people suffered symptoms
and were treated by masked healthcare workers once they disembarked from the train.
and pompiers – including a chemical response unit – were deployed to investigate.
The train was forced to remain in the station whilst investigations were carried out
in case there was a serious issue relating to a toxic substance.
The other passengers also had to leave the train whilst the search was conducted
with local authorities temporarily opening a gymnasium in the city to shelter them.
they were not considered to be infected with any illness
The SNCF organised special trains to serve nearby Angers and Nantes which arrived around 23:00
but not all of the unaffected passengers were able to board these trains
The sick passengers were treated for several hours
At around 02:00 authorities concluded there was no wider risk relating to the train
“The analyses carried out show that none of the substances found were harmful,” reported the department’s prefecture after the event.

Although authorities allowed the train to complete its voyage
the cause of the issue is still unknown.
Passengers reported that one of the train’s conductors had used the tannoy to report “an act of vandalism” soon into the journey
before some of their fellow travellers started to become ill.
One of the passengers described the feeling as similar “to being hit by tear gas,” according to Le Parisien.

A former teacher armed with a handgun that fires rubber bullets and suffering from paranoia took nearly two dozen people
holding them in a classroom at his former school and freeing them unharmed hours later
was on medication and apparently under the influence of alcohol
He surrendered calmly after holding 23 people -- 21 of them teenage students -- captive for more than four hours
Vilpail had taught at the Colbert de Torcy High School
He was armed with a gun that fires rubber bullets
adding that the weapon was nevertheless dangerous
He surrendered after hours of negotiations
Education Minister Gille de Robien said Vilpail had resigned
from the national education system in November
It was unclear whether he had taught elsewhere over the past two years
said the drama ended peacefully in part because of the calm
responsible behavior of the student captives
One of two teacher's aides taken captive said Vilpail appeared "calm and terribly depressed."
"His explanations for doing this were incoherent," said the woman
"He asked us to call a maximum of journalists with our cell phones."
A crack police intervention squad helicoptered in handled the critical second phase of negotiations that "ended in freedom for the entire group without violence," Prigent told France-Info radio

"It's a huge relief for her and her family
She was found in a kebab shop," said Nicolas Leudiere
where the teenager was found late on Tuesday
Prosecutors had launched an investigation into a possible kidnapping a few hours earlier
A man was questioned but released without charge
The teenager runs regularly as she left her home in the village of Saint-Brince towards the Bellebranche forest around 16pm on Monday
Her father started searching when she didn't return home and then called the police
the father had found the girl's cell phone
Investigators checking data on the running app Strava found that the girl's run was interrupted in a rural area after just five and a half minutes
while she had covered just over 1 kilometer
divers among others were involved in her search
The girl had appeared at a kebab shop on Tuesday around 22:00 pm in Sable-sur-Sarthe
As sources have announced for BFM television

Seashell's Le Petit Sablé is serving up adorable desserts
With every Sahel season comes the ever-so-heart-wrenching realization that Teta’s cookie tins are mere sewing kit gatekeepers
This realization is normally followed by a vapid indulgence in what can only be described as the most banal conversation in history; one riddled with fake laughs and Teta’s occasional

sablés are butter cookies originating from Sablé-Sur-Sarthe in the south of France
and they're as famous in France as chocolate chip cookies are in the United States
Le Petit Sablé is a sister pâtisserie to Alexandria’s Le Sablé; a Parisian bakery following famed French baker Madame Renee’s recipes. “This summer

PARIS — François Hollande on Tuesday tried to keep alive his hopes of a French-sponsored Middle East peace conference
saying that although it wouldn’t take place on May 30 as Paris initially suggested
he would keep pushing for a meeting later this year in spite of fierce Israeli opposition
“If France doesn’t take the initiative, what will happen? More colonization? Other terrorist attacks?” the French president asked in an hour-long interview on French radio Europe 1
Hollande also reiterated his near-apology for a controversial UNESCO vote that saw France approve a resolution mentioning “occupied Palestine” and referring to Temple Mount in Jerusalem as a Muslim holy site
It was due to an “unfortunate amendment” and France will vote against the resolution when it comes back for another vote in October
Hollande had previously deemed the vote “a misunderstanding” and his Prime Minister Manuel Valls had told Parliament he “regretted” the mishap
Hollande also said in the interview that France and Germany were preparing joint proposals on Europe that they would make public only after the June 23 U.K
The French president was adamant that he would not make further concessions on the thorny question of labor reform, after his government rammed a controversial law through Parliament last week
I have seen too many governments in the past give in [on reforms]
which explains the state I found the country in,” he said
Asked about his relationship with his Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron
who recently launched his own political movement and is widely believed to harbor presidential ambitions
Hollande said that he “trusted” him like he trusts all ministers
“What I ask him is to implement [the president’s] economic policy,” Hollande said
“If I didn’t trust him he wouldn’t be in government.”
As for next year’s presidential election
Hollande reiterated that he wouldn’t announce a decision whether to run or not before December
“I don’t talk about this with anyone,” he said
“And what I ask [Macron] and others is to abide by that spirit and serve the country.”
the French president said more tax cuts for individuals and corporations could be on the way but would only be decided this summer if public accounts keep improving
Hollande also sent a warning to the French corporate world by siding with Macron
who recently expressed outrage at the high level of top executives’ compensation in industries such as automobile manufacturing
The French president warned that he was mulling a law that would make shareholders’ votes binding on the matter
corporate boards can ignore shareholders’ resolution on the matter
as recently happened at French carmaker Renault
