Competitors in the Transat Paprec – a race organized by OC Sport Pen Duick – and those familiar with the charts have become accustomed to it: Cap St Barth has been at the forefront since the start
the boat skippered by Cindy Brin – the first native of Saint Barthélemy – and Thomas André can legitimately claim overall victory
With Wings of the Ocean (Alexis Thomas-Pauline Courtois) and Skipper Macif (Charlotte Yven-Hugo Dhallenne)
they have taken a slight lead over the competition
Here’s a recounting of an incredible sensation and a breakdown with skipper Éric Péron
Cindy Brin had gotten into the habit of pacing the pontoons wearing large sunglasses to hide the dark circles under her eyes
used his smile to hide his doubts and his obsession with understanding everything about the weather at the start of the race
“It ‘s like a climber looking for his route
where to put his hands,” he confided after the briefing
“We do the same: we imagine our choices
and the route slowly infuses our minds .”
they’re having a superb race!” (Armel Le Cléac’h) After the reflections
With tears barely dried for their loved ones
Cindy and Thomas are keeping an eye on everything and are getting into the lead pack between the buoys
They even come out on top of this coastal course
In the ‘top 10’ rounding Cape Finisterre and then along the Portuguese coast
they are 6th at La Palma and then 3rd from Monday following a front
Cap St Barth has opened up a slight gap with the two other leaders
Wings of the Ocean (Alexis Thomas and Pauline Courtois) and Skipper Macif (Charlotte Yven and Hugo Dhallenne)
” Cap Saint-Barth has been a big surprise so far
they’re having a superb race,” said Armel Le Cléac’h
two-time winner of the Transat Paprec (2004
we’re less and less surprised ,” added race director Francis Le Goff
a renowned Figaro sailor and participant in the Arkea Ultim Challenge – Brest
and managing the duo’s communications
He deciphers their first half of the race: ” At the start
I know that Thomas had the strength to allow them to get off to a good start
I was more surprised later by their ability to attack and hold their own in a group of top sailors .”
“Wearing the colors of Saint-Barth adds an extra dimension.” Eric’s role is essential to the project
” He helped us a lot ,” explained Cindy Brin before the start
Eric was the first to take the helm of a boat bearing the colors of the Saint Barthélemy community in the Transat Paprec
he has maintained ties and was keen to get involved when the Cap St Barth project was relaunched
“ It’s not easy to set up a project while being far from the mainland ,” he confided
Cindy spent the winter in Brittany and together
who was looking for sponsors to compete in a new season in the Figaro
the fact of flying the colors of Saint-Barth
adds an extra dimension ,” explains Éric
A fact that doesn’t only involve Cindy
” The fact that she carries this on her shoulders also allowed Thomas to set off free from pressure
He is keen to prove what he is capable of and he has all the latitude to do so here .”
But the tough sailor hung on and gradually regained her drive and enthusiasm
Cap St Barth was sailing within sight of Wings of the Ocean and had just passed Skipper Macif
Thomas made no secret of his pleasure at being there: ” It means the crew isn’t too bad
The rest of the journey promises to be complicated but exciting .” One thing is certain: the party should be grand when they arrive in Saint Barthélemy in a week

The announcement comes shortly after two former crew members – Natalia Niznik and Klara Holubova – filed a negligence complaint against Loon's former captain Paul Clarke
following a disastrous tender crash in St Barths (24 December)
Court documents obtained by BOAT International describe how Clarke – cited as the "operator" of the tender Reel Time – "abandoned the helm" during their return from a celebratory Christmas lunch at Gypsea Beach Club
leaving the vessel "to continue forward in total darkness" at a cruising speed of between 48 and 51 miles per hour
The tender then collided with a peninsula of rocks
injuring six of the 11 American nationals on board
The force of the collision caused one of the plaintiffs – Niznik – to be ejected from the vessel
landing on the rocks and sustaining injuries to her face
remained on the tender but still sustained injuries to her knee
The pair each received initial care at a local hospital
though Niznik was later flown to Broward County
where she began treatment for her more serious injuries
Holubova returned to the Czech Republic for further care
the pair are pursuing damages in excess of $100,000
impairment of earning capacity and working ability
as well as "mental and psychological trauma"
The complaint was officially filed on 19 March with the Broward County Clerk of Courts in Fort Lauderdale
Loon is one of the most recognisable superyachts on the social media scene
though all her accounts – including Instagram and YouTube – have become private since the incident occurred
BOAT International will update the story as it develops.

Opinions and recommendations are ours alone
2 friends and I were eager to set off for the ultraluxe island of St
Barts for a 2-night stay at a hotel on the French island
What we found was essentially a perfect stay
There are plenty of luxury resorts and villas on the island
but this one stood out: Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa
the brainchild of luxe hotel collective Champagne Hospitality
from Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards and Travel + Leisure’s Top 500 to The Robb Report’s Best of the Best
Check out my review of Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa — what I did
where I played — and learn how to book a stay at this 5-star resort for yourself
St. Barts is one of the most exclusive destinations in the world. Unfortunately, there are few hotels, and fewer to book stays with points. On the island, you won’t find any major chains like Hilton or Marriott. In fact, one of the few chain hotels on the island is Rosewood Le Guanahani St. Barth (which started at around $3,000 per night during our travel dates)
but there is no way at present to book the resort with points
Hilton hasn’t announced which hotels will be bookable with Hilton points.)

There was another reason I booked through Capital One instead of directly or through an online travel agency like Expedia. Le Barths is part of the Capital One Premier Collection

When you book a stay at a Premier Collection property
I’ll discuss the benefits I received at Le Barths through the program
let’s discuss how to make a Premier Collection reservation
Booking the hotel through the Premier Collection was pretty simple. After logging in to my Capital One account, I toggled to the Travel section and selected my Capital One Venture X card (you can also start directly at capitalonetravel.com)
A ribbon at the top of the Capital One Travel dashboard says Flights
After confirming my travel dates — and applying my $300 annual Capital One Travel credit — I booked my trip and was immediately confirmed

This area of the island includes other luxury resorts
Note that taxis to the main city of Gustavia are pricey (around $60 each way)
After our visit to St. Martin, which included a stay at the JW Marriott St. Maarten Beach Resort & Spa
it was time to depart for the luxury island of St
a small island in the French West Indies (known in French as Saint Barthelemy)
which is a less than 4-hour flight from New York
is often used as a base for travelers visiting the nearby islands of Anguilla
The first was a 15-minute flight from Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) to Gustaf III Airport (SBH) on Winair or the small St
Most travelers from outside the Caribbean get to St
The final and most economical option was to take the Great Bay Express Ferry
where cruise ships dock so passengers can explore
with the standard souvenir shops and duty-free liquor stores
but it was an affordable place to grab coffee and check out the boats in the harbor
Our round-trip ticket cost around $115, and I appreciated that we could book last-minute tickets to the island. Additionally, we were able to bring our luggage on board for free. (I put the spend on my Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card to earn 2x on all other travel purchases.)
After a quick check-in and immigration inspection
we boarded the ferry and headed off to paradise
was nothing short of uncomfortable — and the weather was pretty clear that day
It was a rough ride — even with gorgeous views of ships like Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas
I strongly suggest bringing Dramamine and ginger ale and avoiding sitting inside the cabin
Great Bay Express offered 2 ferries between Gustavia and St
we were eager to be on dry land and even more eager to check out St
and we set off for the 20-minute drive to the resort
Taxi service between the ferry terminal and Le Barths was complimentary
which was a nice touch and helped us save some cash on this expensive island
The air-conditioned van was stocked with water
Antoine explained that the island was in low season (peak is during the Christmas holiday season) and that we would
showing us where the ultra-posh shop and dine
The sounds of the waves on the beach were enticing
including cute suspended chairs resembling birdcages
I’d been communicating with the concierge via WhatsApp the day before our arrival
and all we had to do was present our passports to the front desk
The friendly concierge explained the resort’s main features
and that my room had been upgraded (more below)
we set off to check out our digs for the 2-night stay
slept 2 and offered either a king-size bed or 2 twin beds
the most economical of the rooms and suites at Le Barth
but the hotel allowed a third to be added for a $180 fee
and I believe our experience would have been fantastic no matter what room we stayed in
I was pleased to receive an upgrade to a suite
which made the already perfect stay that much more incredible
the 2-floor La Suite Plage (which starts at around $2,300 per night) was positively stunning
The suite offered direct beach access with unobstructed ocean views from the second-floor balcony
There was an additional terrace with a table (presumably for smokers)
The terrace was followed by a patio that led directly to the beach
The main living room was incredibly spacious
noted that the mattress was extremely firm
they said the couch was far more plush in its regular couch form
so I suggest sleeping on top of the couch and not bothering with pulling out the mattress if you want a more restful night
A medium-sized TV was mounted above the desk
The desk held the restaurant menu as well as a collection of cute St
king-size bed sat in the middle of the room
a hybrid between a firm and a softer mattress
which made sinking into the sheets after a hot day outside extremely pleasant
The bed in the master bedroom contained a gold mine of goodies
A welcome note was also waiting for us on the bed
A small box of candies was also on the bed
1 in the upstairs bedroom and 1 in the living room
The room was stocked with a Nespresso machine
with closets on both floors providing space to store our luggage and other essentials
The hotel provided us with plenty of water in the room
Perhaps my favorite room feature was the 2 massive bathrooms (which made getting ready in the mornings far easier)
The first-floor bathroom had a walk-in shower and was small but functional
as the outlets at this hotel had European outlets
But the pièce de résistance — and what made me think that this wouldn’t be our typical 5-star resort stay — was the beautiful welcome bottle of Champagne waiting on ice for us
along with a note welcoming us to the resort and the island
and my friend drank her Champagne out of an extra flute in the room)
A plate of treats next to the Champagne complemented the bubbly
and we munched and drank as we took in this absolutely stunning suite
Le Barths had an impressive lineup of amenities to keep guests occupied and relaxed during their stay
Le Barths commanded a significant portion of Grand Cul de Sac beach
The beach offered gorgeous views of docked yachts — which you could rent out — and the water was calm and warm
Workers took care of any seaweed on the shore early in the morning
with comfortable lounge chairs and umbrellas to shield you from the unforgiving sun
and you could order food and drinks from the nearby bar
The beach was pretty quiet during our visit
with most guests lounging by the pool or on their balconies
the resort’s highlight was the large infinity pool
which sat between a block of rooms and the main restaurant
Many guests spent much of the day lounging by the pool
stopping every few hours to take a quick dip
and though it wasn’t the largest I’ve seen
several servers were on hand to take orders by the pool
and I saw several guests playing a few rounds
and workers were happy to raise and lower our umbrellas
or comment about the weather (both days we visited had approximately 1 hour of rain in the afternoon)
something I’ve discovered the ultrarich appreciate
Le Barths had a fitness center on the lower level of the resort
The gym offered updated Technogym equipment for leg and arm workouts
but I can imagine it getting busy during peak season
The spa was also on the resort’s lower level
It was fully stocked and offered Nordic baths
and treatments such as deep-tissue massages and facials
treatments were pretty expensive — expect to pay around $250 for a facial
you could also rent Jet Skis or even a boat
There was a small boutique shop at the resort that sold beachwear
which was closed during our visit.Advertisement
formerly of Michelin-starred Les Oliviers in Bandol
You could dine inside the restaurant or along the beach
food ordered at the beach or poolside came from Amis
though there was a bar near the pool for drinks
One of the coolest things about our stay at Le Barths was the on-demand Champagne button
You could order Champagne service via the in-room phone
but you could also push a button to order Champagne service directly to your room
A concierge picked up on the third ring and simply said
I was informed that Champagne would be delivered approximately 10 minutes later
I was expecting a simple glass of Champagne or maybe a whole bottle
But Le Barths went all out on Champagne service
The service came with an entire bottle of Champagne on ice and 2 Champagne glasses
It was in a pretty Champagne presentation box with the hotel’s logo
This service cost €150 ($160) and was essentially the same service we got upon arrival in our room (more on that below)
the unique experience of having a dedicated phone line to order Champagne for room service was undoubtedly memorable
One of my favorite perks of booking through the Premier Collection — especially at non-points hotels — is the complimentary daily breakfast for 2
as a daily continental breakfast for 2 started at around $100
Breakfast was far more expansive here than at the JW Marriott St
You could also order food directly from the menu
and juice were regularly available and were self-serve
The exception was the fried fish sandwich and fries for lunch (which cost around $60)
The meals guests ordered from the beach or the pool also came from Amis
we ate breakfast and lunch at the hotel and ordered takeout for dinner from nearby restaurants (which the hotel handled)
given how quick the service was at the pool and restaurant
Entrees were pretty pricey — think €60 (about $65) — and featured standard fare like fish and salads
I wasn’t that impressed with the meals (other than the scenery)
but they got the job done for a short trip
we likely would have dined in town more than eaten at the hotel
Le Barths sweeps travel awards each year — and for good reason
The service at this resort is undeniably excellent
true luxury isn’t glitz and glamour — though Le Barths has plenty of it — but rather a commitment to service culture
Le Barths shone here with personable service that was not over the top
and our concierges were happy to give us recommendations on things to do on the island and even let us practice our (quite terrible) French with them
Some other ways Le Barths showed its hospitality included our concierge
dashing out in the rain to offer us umbrellas to get back to the room and the front desk arranging a last-minute dinner reservation at the nearby Le Sereno (which is also part of the Premier Collection)
There were undoubtedly more moments like that
but Le Barths overall shone in its commitment to warm
My stay at Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa was nothing short of perfect
we enjoyed a (far too short) 48 hours of pure luxury at a resort that goes all out to ensure guests have a phenomenal stay
While the resort’s cost may shock some travelers
I think it was worth it for such a high-end stay
our trip to Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa was absolutely fantastic — and we’re already planning our next visit
the Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa is a luxury hotel
Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa is not an all-inclusive resort
You can’t book Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa directly with points or miles
as the resort does not participate in any major hotel chains yet
you can book the hotel through Capital One Travel and apply miles to your reservation
Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa is on Grand Cul de Sac
about 20 minutes by car from the Gustavia ferry port or 10 minutes from Gustaf III Airport
Barts (Saint Barthélemy) is an island in the French West Indies
approximately 15 minutes by flight or 45 minutes by boat from St

when I was working for a major bank in their head office in London
the official publication of the Diocese of Lansing
Every evening I would go to 5 o’clock Mass in the Duomo (cathedral) which was reckoned to be the third-largest church in the world – a kind of Renaissance mega-church
Walking into the building it was so spacious that it would feel like being outside
There were many startling and beautiful things in that church to look at
I decided to leave by a different door on the left of the altar
was a marble statue I had never seen before and as I approached
What it depicted was Saint Bartholomew but the shocking thing about the statue is that the figure is flayed and is holding the discarded skin of his body draped over his shoulders
It was made all the more realistic because the color of the marble
I was intrigued and slightly grossed out in equal measure
Saint Bartholomew was one of the Twelve Apostles
The story goes that after Jesus ascended into heaven
Bartholomew traveled east to India to preach the gospel and ended up in Greater Armenia
he was flayed and beheaded there for converting the king to Christianity
He is often depicted in art flayed and holding his skin
If you study Michelangelo’s Last Judgment on the end wall of the Sistine Chapel
you see him gripping onto the flayed skin – except in that case the skin is the artist’s self-portrait
What is so remarkable about this saint – apart from his grisly appearance in the Duomo
The same thing that distinguishes all of the apostles
Their fearless proclamation of the gospel in the face of persecution and certain martyrdom
This amazing courage is salutary for us and makes us ask the question whether we are too timid to share the gospel openly with family
They had encountered God in a very real way
and were determined to follow his Great Commission to preach the gospel and baptize people
How ready are we to share our relationship with God with other people
Let’s ask Saint Bartholomew to send us even a fragment of his courage and to help us to spread the good news as he did

Carnival season is almost here and, as well as famous Mardi Gras celebrations in Brazil, New Orleans, and Venice, Italy, bucket-list parties take place in many places around the world, including the idyllic Leeward island of Saint Barthélemy, commonly known as St Barts.
There, in the northeastern Caribbean, a Mardi Gras celebration has been taking place every year (bar 2020) since the 19th century, when the tradition began. It marks the start of the Christian fast of Lent and was introduced by French colonials. But, unlike events elsewhere, the St Barts Carnival has a uniquely local feel, embracing not only European influences but Caribbean and Creole folklore and a tropical spirit.
Though the big day itself falls on 4 March 2025, the Carnival vibes make themselves felt for weeks before, as people ready themselves, making elaborate costumes, preparing floats and rehearsing dances all over the island and its capital Gustavia.

With a buzz filling local shops and restaurants, its a great time to discover what the island has to offer. Then, over two unforgettable days, a series of no-reservation Carnival events are laid on. It all ends on Ash Wednesday, when appropriately, things go up in flames.
Not to miss is the Main Parade, a vibrant mix of impressive choreography and improvised fun accompanied by the distinctive sound of steel drums, throbbing reggae and traditional Carnival melodies.
Youngsters get their own special opportunity to show off their creativity and expend some energy during the Children’s Parade, and the family-friendly fun continues with a Pyjama Procession.

Insider tips include advice to book rooms as early as possible and stay in the capital Gustavia itself, rather than choosing accommodation elsewhere on the island which could mean missing out on the full fun of the Carnival. Allow a budget to support local artisans and entrepreneurs and make sure you have a camera at the ready to capture the excitement.

When it comes to clothing, while comfortable footwear is a must, visitors may feel a little out-of-place if they do not make an effort to join in with some sort of colourful outfit. Don’t be afraid of the burning of Vaval but don’t forget to schedule some down time, away from the stimulation the Carnival atmosphere brings.

And for those who can, the island calendar also offers a Gourmet Festival, usually held in November and promising all the refinement of French cuisine fused with unmistakeable local flavours; a Music Festival, typically held in January; and following on from Carnival, the St Barts Regatta held in mid-March and attracting the best sailors in the world.

12:45pm EDTShareSaveCommentArtist Daniel Dugan working on his mural at Nikki Beach Saint Barth
Los Angeles-based artist Daniel Dugan’s work is instantly recognizable for its single-line technique
he crafts a labyrinth-like system using curved
equidistant lines that never intersect or overlap
The unbroken line flows in one continuous line from beginning to end
transforming seemingly chaotic movements into thoughtful
meditative compositions that encourage mindfulness and resemble patterns found in nature
who conceptualized his distinct art form at the age of 10
never pre-plans the line’s path and freehands each and every piece of art
as he is able to distance the lines perfectly by eye
Dugan painted both a wall and the DJ booth
as music is an integral part of the Nikki Beach ..
“The design vision was to find a way to use my signature style to bring the colors of the sea and sand to the space
to connect indoor with outdoor,” Dugan tells Forbes
much of my work has a striking resemblance to coral
there are two hemispherical mirrors mounted in the middle
so I realized the reflection of the nearby sea would appear in the space
creating an interactive working space during service where he could paint alongside guests
and be a part of Nikki Beach’s vibrant scene
there are limited-edition pieces only available at Nikki Beach Saint Barth that feature a print of the colorful mural

“Daniel first visited the property some time ago
and we immediately connected,” Delamaire says
“We discussed the idea of him creating something for the beach club
the timing finally felt right to bring that vision to life
We made sure that the collaboration reflected both his unique style and was relevant to our location
His signature design is reminiscent of the coral in the bay of Saint Jean in front of our location which we’ve recently been working to restore in partnership with Eden Rock
collaborating with artists and creatives is an essential part of who we are
Our brand is built on six core elements: music

Dugan has spent considerable amounts of time on the island over the years
which gave him a more intimate understanding of the project
to discover that Nikki Beach’s motto is “Celebration of Life” and that Nikki Beach was named in honor of founder Jack Penrod’s late daughter
“The motto struck me as a beautiful coincidence as the meaning of my line artwork is that everything has a beginning
but that time (and life) will continue to matter what,” Dugan explains
“How do we choose to process both the struggles and the wins of life
My lifelong exploration of this line has taught me to accept each moment and to celebrate life
These feelings are evoked each time I come to St
It was such a natural fit that my line would have a nice home not only in St

Which is why it makes sense to stay the night in this most chi chi of Caribbean islands on your floating hotel, or in my case SeaDream I
SeaDream I overnights in St Barts once a week on its St Maarten itineraries, to coincide with sister vessel, SeaDream II
both of which blend effortlessly in with the rest of the mega-yachts
The Walton family yacht moored off St Barts (Photo: Adam Coulter)
(The Walton family yacht was moored directly opposite us
which at 361 feet long is 20 feet longer than our 110-passenger vessel.)
arriving by yacht (as SeaDream describes its two ships)
is arguably the most stylish way to pitch up in St Barths
Of course it’s not just SeaDream which offers overnights in St Barths; the influx of small ships to the Caribbean has meant there are now more choices for cruise lines going there
even Celebrity (which is definitely not a small ship) all offer overnights on the island
so SeaDream offers a regular tender service until just before midnight
thus allowing passengers to make the most of the island by night
A number of passengers opted to stay on the ship to have dinner
which in retrospect might have been the better (financial) option
they missed out a dining experience on land
but when you have food as outstanding as that served onboard SeaDream
We opted to dine ashore with another couple
but did not want to stray too far from Gustavia
a few hundred yards from where the tenders drop off
Although maybe not quite up there in terms of celeb-spotting as Eden Rock
Le Café is nevertheless an institution on the island
Le Café is famous for its live music – a chanteuse accompanied by a piano player sings French (of course) torch songs as the beautiful people enjoy their meals
And it is a beauty pageant when you dine out in St Barths – no amount of designer wear is too much
The number of people taking pictures of their food or themselves vastly outnumbered those that were actually eating it
Entrance to Le Cafe in St Barts (Photo: Adam Coulter)
Le Café did not disappoint; the food was superb
mixing classic Provencal dishes with Caribbean flavors: so you’ll have a (local) Wahoo fish carpaccio next to a classic French onion soup Burgundy snails
The mains are heavy on the fish – we opted for a Meuniere-style sole (not very local
which at €95 was the single most expensive item on the menu; grilled mahi mahi; coconut curry and pan fried scallops
We were also very impressed by the service
but also friendly and patient as we struggled to decipher some of the less immediately translatable items
Dinner in Le Cafe in St Barts (Photo: Le Cafe)
The only thing we found curious was the lack of clientele
but then it became clear why – we booked dinner at 7:30 p.m.
and just as we were finishing up around 9:00 p.m
everyone else came in – looking beautiful and taking selfies
The great thing was with an early sitting we had a direct view of the pianist and the singer
but the whole lot still came to €500 between the four of us
which is probably comparable with New York or London prices in a high-end restaurant
we took comfort in the fact another group we met on board opted to take a taxi to Eden Rock and came back €700 lighter – and that was without wine
but it’s still a shock after being cosseted on SeaDream for a few days
where the champagne and caviar flow freely
the service is outstanding and the food sublime
My recommendation would be: Stay on your ship
then venture ashore for a couple of over-priced cocktails
then take the tender back to your comfy cabin and wake up to a gorgeous view of the bay
Unless you really want to spot Leo di Caprio or Beyonce at Eden Rock

with the yachts competing for the coveted regatta title now confirmed
BOAT takes a closer look at the competitors vying for the top spot..
This 56-metre Perini Rosehearty rarely misses a Bucket
She raced Corinthian last year but returns to the Les Grande Dames this year
She is in her full glory when she’s fully powered
Following a refit in 2023, Panthalassa returned to the racecourse in 2024
revived to her “original racing potential”
according to refit yard Amsterdam Yacht Service
In her first appearance in St Barths since 2013
the 56-metre Perini Navi managed a second-place finish by the last day
Burrasca’s 20 years of race history span victories at the 2004 Perini Navi Cup and the 2024 Andros International Yacht Race. One of designer Ron Holland’s 56-metre Perini Navis, Burrasca is strong in light to moderate conditions thanks to a sail area of 1,585 square metres
Available for charter with fraseryachts.com
Born in 1903, Adela was rebuilt at Pendennis in 1995 and has since proven herself again and again on the racecourse
thanks to design heavyweight Gerald Dykstra
the schooner took home the Bucket Trophy as overall winner in a field of 31 yachts
Builder: Royal Huisman Year: 2014
Whatever St Barths dishes out, the classic 48-metre Hoek Wisp can take it
The double headsail works well in a fetch to a broad reach
and her long overhangs make her comfortable in the larger seas of the island’s windward side
Captain Dan Rawlins of Hyperion said: “Racing can be an excellent
safe way to learn the limits of these large yachts – having some of the best sailors in the world very keen to squeeze every ounce of performance
Regular racing keeps the equipment in tip-top shape and allows for a great understanding of how far we can push
charter guests and crew – a definite highlight on the calendar for all involved.”
Built for big-boat racing, Gitana was launched from Fitzroy Yachts as Salperton IV in 2009 and quickly made a name for herself on the race circuit
This marks the second Bucket for the yacht as Gitana
The 45-metre Dubois-designed sloop thrives in 18 to 25 knots
This year makes the third Bucket for the 39-metre Pendennis Vijonara
following a second place in 2024 and a special award for best owner-driver in 2022
The Truly Classic 128 by Andre Hoek “impresses in the lighter breeze but still hangs on nicely in the heavier stuff,” says Captain David Roberts
The 1933 38.5-metre Camper & Nicholsons J Class is a familiar sight at St Barths. For the last 15-plus years, Velsheda has raced in class against fellow Js or competed with Les Elegantes
This 37-metre Royal Huisman shies from the press spotlight but she’s gaining a reputation on the superyacht racing scene nevertheless, winning the Buccaneer class at Superyacht Challenge Antigua in 2022 and 2023. Action returns for her third Bucket this year
Cruising and Bucket racing since her launch in 2003, the Ted Fontaine-designed Holland Jachtbouw Whisper was built by avid sailor Hap Fauth – an owner that Captain Simon Davison calls the “best I have worked for in 30 years”
with a 49-metre rig and 565 square metres of sail
Classically styled Aurelius began racing in St Barths after she changed hands in 2017. Custom built by a yachtsman who formed his own yard, the 33.9-metre aluminium sloop has the expertise of the Dykstra design team behind her
Awarded 2014’s Sailing Yacht of the Year at the BOAT International World Superyacht Awards, the Baltic 107 designed by Germán Frers is a both a high-performance sloop and a comfortable cruiser. Inukshuk returns to St Barths for the third year in a row
racing in the non-spinnaker Corinthian Spirit class
Reichel-Pugh-designed Wallycento Galateia is normally seen racing in the Med
where she’s won the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup twice in Porto Cervo and claimed victory the last three years at PalmaVela
Captain Mike Atkinson reports they are looking forward to competing in the Caribbean’s challenging sea state conditions
It may be her first ever race in the Caribbean, but this Mark Mills-designed Wallycento V will be one to beat
Launched as Tango in 2017 from Persico Marine
she had an overhaul in early 2024 that transformed her on all angles of sail
She went on to win her class at the European Maxi Championships and the Barcelona Superyacht Regatta
A lightweight design and efficient sailplan make this Swan 100 a contender. Indeed, she is a Bucket veteran, racing as L’Hippocampe and under her previous name of Varsovie
and a recent refit has seen the cockpit redesigned to host a full race crew alongside guests
Available for charter with judel-vrolijk.com; roccabellayachts.com
After taking a hiatus from racing between 2018 and 2022, the 30-metre Dubois design Nostromo has had a significant refit and is back better than ever
The Bucket will be one of three races on the 2025 calendar for this solid Pendennis that excels in winds above 15 knots – which St Barths never fails to deliver
A Bucket aficionado, having raced in 12, Symmetry owner Abbott Brown says he sails his lightweight sloop like a dinghy
The 29-metre Frers’ best result was in 2022 when she came first in class
“Most unusual was in 2006 when a race was cancelled shortly after starting and it turned into a swim party between boats,” he reminisces
this 28-metre Swan 90 is La Petite Dame to beat – particularly in windy conditions
when the Germán Frers design comes into its own
Captain Joph Carter of Freya said: “We are excited to see the development of the 90 Foot class and pleased the race committee has introduced this over the past years
pocket-size yachts who cannot compete under the 100-foot-plus classes
We are hoping to see four to five boats on the start line this year with some good competition coming from Hummingbird
One of 12 Swan 90s built, Nefertiti was delivered in 2010 but is joining the Bucket for the first time this year
perhaps enticed by the competition in the recently added 90 Foot class
She is no racing neophyte though; she took first in the Swan Caribbean Challenge at the RORC Caribbean 600 in 2013 and 2014
The Swan 90 Hummingbird is making her Bucket debut
joining at least two of her sisterships in the 90 Foot class
Hummingbird is oriented more towards light air
She recently placed second at the 2024 Rolex Swan Cup in the Maxi division
and will faceoff with the first-place Freya again in St Barths
Making her Bucket debut in the 90 Foot class is this 27-metre YYachts Prevail. Designed by Bill Tripp, she is a great example of his lightweight carbon composite boats. Since her delivery in late 2021, she has cruised mainly in the Med, racing once at the 2023 Ibiza JoySail, where she finished second in her class.
Captain Lockie Stewart-Baker of Prevail said: “Prevail is mainly used for family cruising and the Bucket offers an opportunity to stretch her legs in what is always a well-organised and high-quality racing event. The accent will be on having fun with a great guest and race crew.”
Cheval Blanc St-Barth continues to shine as a pearl of the Caribbean
Cheval Blanc St-Barth unites refined palatial glamour with barefoot relaxation
Although travelling to the remote island is no easy feat
especially if you are venturing from Europe or further east
the long-haul fatigue disappears as the petite seaplane slowly reaches its destination
slicing through the crisp blue skies and cascading over the azure blue sea
where Cheval Blanc St-Barth takes residence
With the long, white sandy beach as its backyard, it is no wonder the luxury hotel is in harmony with the laidback aesthetic of the Caribbean. Yet it is indulgently decadent, having received a ‘Palace’ distinction (only awarded to a few hotels across France as recognition for excellent service)
Cheval Blanc St-Barth is the third location to be welcomed into the Maison collection; its suites and villas overlook the sea or the tropical gardens
where eagle-eyed guests can spot turtles and iguanas living amongst carefully preserved tropical flora
Balancing the charm of oceanside homes with echoes of French refinement
French furniture designer Jacques Grange took on the task of designing the villa and suite interiors by adding sculptural detailing
while colour is threaded through the choice in abstract art
Even though taking in the natural beauty of the location is an effortless way to relax
if there is a need to peel yourself away from the comfort of the hillside retreats or beachside bungalows
Cheval Blanc St-Barth’s spa is perhaps the pinnacle of relaxation
The ‘Fusion with Nature’ ritual is a treatment in the heart of the gardens
Immersed by the island’s surrounding vegetation
the massage also incorporates Guerlain products
headed by chef Jean Imbert with its accompanying poolside White Bar
casual culinary menu that pays tribute to cuisine inspired by local flavours
including seared yellowfin tuna to poached mahi-mahi
enjoy a rum cocktail full of notes of roasted pineapple
and passion fruit – a Caribbean toast to oceanfront living

Shirley Robertson – double gold-winning Olympic sailor
veteran Bucket racer and General Manager of the Super Yacht Racing Association – explains how to do the St Barths Bucket
the scenery of St Barths’ Baie de St Jean is augmented by one of the most spectacular sights in sailing yacht racing
as many as 30 of the world’s largest sailing superyachts will be strung out in a glorious game of follow the leader as they take part in a legendary regatta
the sun worshippers sitting along Nikki Beach may well gaze in wonder at the procession of giant black sails and powerful hulls
But what they might not realise is that these superyachts are engaged in a carefully orchestrated series of races that have taken years to perfect
The Bucket gathers superyachts for a week of racing, but none of the yachts are really designed to a class rule (except the J Class)
Performance parameters and sailing characteristics are wildly different between yachts
and to avoid any unwelcome coming together of the fleet
they employ an almost unique racing format
but we use Pursuit Racing,” says Peter Craig
And the handicapping is such that all of the superyachts therefore finish at the same time
where we had 46 entries and as they came around the last corner
you could see 25 superyachts charging downwind
We had a finish line that was in excess of half a mile long
but it needed to be a mile and a half based on the huge yachts coming down – that was a big learning experience; we changed things the next year.”
the organisers have it pretty much figured out
because if the handicap rule is working well and everyone’s sailing their boat to its full potential
it’s pretty exciting going to the finish line
You can also explain it to your guests easily and everyone’s excited as you’re working your way through the fleet
overtaking one by one – or if you have a slower rated yacht
you’re holding people off position by position
So that whole concept of pursuit racing is simple and fun.”
most entrants are designed for luxurious cruising and are adapted mildly for a few weeks of racing during regatta season
They are then populated with some of the most accomplished
will race the boats with varying degrees of intensity
the fleet is split into different class bands according to a complex and carefully considered handicap system
but it wasn’t considered to be serious racing 20 years ago,” Craig says
Some owners used to call it a Parade of Sail.” That’s changed
and now people come for a variety of reasons – including the racing
sailors like to race against a healthy field of competition
If you have 30 yachts coming to the Bucket
do you want three classes of 10 boats or six classes of five boats
Superyacht racing also comprises a hugely disparate group of yachts
You’ve got schooners and ketches and sloops and performance-oriented sloops that look and perform like race boats
And then you’ve got a 600-tonne yacht built strictly for cruising that takes eight or nine minutes to get back up to speed out of a tack
the organisers decided to take a holistic view of yachts when determining classes
as opposed to assigning them based on ratings alone
“We found that people prefer to race with yachts that have similar characteristics to themselves,” Craig says
they group yachts that perform in a comparable way in an assortment of different conditions
Yachts in 2024 were therefore divided into three “conventional” cruising superyacht classes
two non-spinnaker Corinthian Spirit classes
one 90 Foot class and one Open Performance class
Most Bucket boats will race for three blissful days
the first entails an Around the Island race – anti-clockwise
an upwind start with the prevailing trade winds around the island
has been simplified and is now known as the Not So Wiggley course – it reaches out to the west of St Barths
takes the fleet clockwise around the island
with a downwind start and a downwind finish
a wonderful-looking venue with its white sands and crystal-clear waters
But the Bucket isn’t in St Barths solely for the backdrop
The island nestles on the north-eastern corner of the Caribbean island chain
And it’s the very special location that adds to the allure of this magical regatta
“There are prevailing easterly trade winds and historically
there’s been sailable breeze every day,” Craig says
it creates nice variety on course content with upwind
we have been very fortunate – in the 17 years I’ve been there
You show up for three or four days of racing and you get three or four days of racing.” In combination with a top-notch shoreside component
it makes the Bucket a regatta unlike any other
The St Barths Bucket features three courses designed with multiple variations to ensure fair competition across all boat classes
Each of the Bucket’s three race courses comprises multiple variations to account for different wind and sea conditions
as well as alternative “a” versions of each course for certain classes of boats
an amendment designed to ensure fair course configuration for the entire fleet
The maps (above) offer a sample of each of the three courses – Around the Island

Space Gallery is thrilled to announce the release of the St Barth watercolor collection by local artist Julie Fumat
The collaboration features a series of 11 limited edition aquarelle prints of the island’s most iconic features and landmarks
Along with the illustrated map of the island the collection includes depictions of Corossol
the Bucket Regatta and the iconic sSurf Hut of Lorient
After completing a more traditional education at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris
Julie Fumat spent several years in the art world as a gallery owner
Her artistic journey then took her down a multidisciplinary path at the crossroads of photography
and acrylic painting and it wasn’t until years later that she discovered and learned the art of watercolour
she has set about representing the neighborhoods of her adopted island
in order to create a colorful inventory of the beauty of Saint Barthélemy
Under her artistic identity ‘Moon St Barth’
that capture the nuance of the places we hold special on the island and their color and spirit
She works primarily with ink and watercolor because they rely heavily on transparency and allow her to play with chance
“I have a particular affinity for the wet-on-wet technique
which enables me to create beautiful fusions between water and pigment that give watercolor its unique charm
I’m always eager to experiment with new techniques
I regularly reinterpret my illustrations using digital overprinting from photographs or decomposing watercolors layer by layer to give each drawing a new dimension and depth”
