This day is marked by festive gatherings, meals with family and friends, and cultural events. Although it shares the same date with Boxing Day, the traditions are quite different. Boxing Day is associated with charitable activities, while Saint Stephen's Day in Catalonia focuses on cultural and family celebrations.   In the 9th century, Catalonia was under the rule of Charlemagne and dependent on the ancient diocese of Narbonne, while the rest of the Iberian Peninsula was Christian under the archdiocese of Toledo.     The main difference between the two is that for the Carolingians, the concept of family was so important that people had to travel to their ancestral homes for important celebrations.    With slower and longer journeys, they needed plenty of time to return home after the festivities. As a result, Sant Esteve - in honor of the first Christian martyr - became a day off work, allowing families to reunite.     This is well explained by the popular saying: "Per Nadal cada ovella al seu corral, per Sant Esteve, cadascú a casa seva" - sheep in their pen on Christmas Day, people in their house on Saint Stephen's Day.   Tradition dictates that on this day, also known as the second Christmas, one must eat canelons, a dish made with the leftovers from Christmas meals. This dish is prepared in many homes with the same enthusiasm as the previous Christmas gatherings.   Canelons, derived from the Italian word cannelloni, are wide rectangular sheets of pasta often used in Italian cuisine to stuff minced meat, vegetables or even fish.    Surprisingly, this is not the type of pasta that is most commonly eaten in Italy. Centuries of trade and interaction between Catalonia and southern Italy have led to a gastronomic exchange between the two regions, and now it has become a traditional Catalan dish.  According to Carme Ruscalleda, the best way to enjoy cannelloni is not as leftovers, but with a roast of three meats (veal, lamb and chicken), roasted until tender and well cooked, minced, stuffed into the pasta and covered with a balanced amount of béchamel and cheese. And if you really want to impress your guests, add some local and international dishes to the table! These can include black truffle, caviar or pandoro. And the following day, St Stephen’s Day, we do it again. But why is St Stephen’s Day (Boxing Day) such a firmly rooted custom here when it isn’t celebrated in the rest of Spain? The booklet ‘Celebrem el Nadal’ (Let’s celebrate Christmas) has the answer to this puzzle and a good many more besides because the idea behind it was to explain the reason for lots of Christmas customs and traditions Carbó says that St Stephen’s Day is a unique feature of the Catalan calendar linked to our Carolingian past In the 9th century Old Catalonia belonged to the empire founded by Charlemagne and came under the Bishop of Narbonne in contrast to the rest of the Christian Iberian peninsula dominated by the Goths and under the Bishop of Toledo That meant they had very different concepts of the family so when there was an important festival they had to travel to the family home the biggest date on the religious calendar brought the whole family together round the family hearth And since journeys were usually long in the Middle Ages the darkness intense and the means of transport precarious people needed time to return home the next day St Stephen’s Day was a day when people didn’t work which is not exactly the same as having a celebration This is well explained by the proverb: Per Nadal cada ovella al seu corral / per Sant Esteve cadascú a casa seva – sheep in their pen on Christmas Day not only do we have the reason why we celebrate St Stephen’s Day it also explains why Catalans celebrate Easter and Pentecost (Whit Sunday) the three most important festivals on the religious calendar this custom links us with the rest of Europe because it has survived in other places that came under Carolingian influence and which have ended up becoming the main states in Europe Eight nations are facing off in the delayed edition of the 2021 Women's Rugby League World Cup Players from the Australian NRLW competition and English Women's Super League feature heavily throughout the tournament with more professional opportunities now available for females in the sport Reigning champions Australia are the heavy favourites according to the bookmakers but will likely face competition from trans-Tasman neighbours New Zealand and host nation England if they reach the final Running concurrently with the men's and wheelchair tournaments the women's final will be held as part of a doubleheader at Old Trafford alongside the men's decider The Sporting News has listed every nation's squad below MORE: Full schedule and results from RLWC 2021 | When is the RLWC final? Read our Privacy notice A French rugby league player is facing a life-time ban from the sport after punching a referee in response to being shown a yellow card, knocking him unconscious and leaving him with cheekbone and jaw injuries. The Saint-Esteve player, who has not been identified, was sent to the sin-bin during a juniors French Cup match against Toulouse by referee Benjamin Casty, brother of Catalan Dragons star Remi Casty. The player responded by angrily confronting the referee, before launching a right hook at his face that knocked him unconscious. When opposition players asked him what he was doing, the player then started swinging punches at them, leading to a melee between the two sides. One Toulouse player can be seen to tend to the referee, before running off to join the brawl, while one of the assistant referees soon comes to Casty’s aid. St-Esteve president Christian Cozza confirmed that the player has already been suspended for four matches this season, and announced his resignation on social media. “This player had already been suspended four games earlier in the season and I did not want him to play,” Cozza said. The president of the French Federation, Marc Palanques, suggested that strong action needs to be taken against the player. He said: “I hope that the National Disciplinary Commission, which will meet on Wednesday, will be uncompromising.” Casty was taken to a nearby hospital where he was diagnosed with cheekbone and jaw injuries, however, reports in France claim that he avoided a broken jaw and is currently recovering from the incident. St-Esteve are one of the feeder clubs to the Catalan Dragons, France’s best rugby league side, who play in the Super League, with Remi Casty joining the club from the Sydney Roosters in 2014. Join thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their replies It’s always been a source of disappointment for me that the French domestic competition hasn’t grown in stature since the introduction of Catalans to Super League Instead of the pioneering Dragons being used as the pinnacle and dragging up those behind them The fabled Anglo-French competition between English Championship clubs and their French Elite 1 counterparts didn’t last long Crowds in rugby league are generally sparse outside of season ticket games – see Challenge Cup and 1895 Cup for instance – but the cross-channel games are certainly something that should be explored further if perhaps it targets lower Championship sides due to the difference in class The French Elite 1 Championship comprises 10 teams and was won last year by Saint Esteve XIII Catalan effectively a feeder side to Catalans Dragons The season starts with their own version of the Magic Weekend The 10 teams play each other home and away The top six then proceed to the end of season play-offs The French Elite 2 competition is still being formulated for the new season but is expected to have either 10 or 12 teams There is a desire for promotion and relegation between the two but it hasn’t happened since Saint Gaudens went up in 2016 due to minimum criteria put in place for promotion The reasons for that are largely financial with some clubs unable to commit to making the step up due to the historic issues that have affected rugby league in France That lack of automatic promotion/relegation has seen the gap widen between the two competitions in recent years But there are a growing number of clubs in Elite 2 with ambition who boasted Vinnie and Louis Anderson and Patrick Ah Van in their squad for the recently completed season work a lot on youth development while Pia are on their way back having had a turbulent recent history There are nice projects developing in big cities like Toulon and Lyon and Carpentras have a nice set-up there is a National Division 1 which is split in to two leagues (East/West) and then a National Division 2 with five regional leagues previously known as the Federal championships There have been some expensively assembled Elite 1 teams in the past with crowds lower than 1,000 and clubs also lack the resources to effectively communicate and market their games to attract people to the grounds As rugby league continues to attempt expansion it would surely be the most positive step to encourage and establish professional leagues where possible and that should be supported and cultivated to enable its growth We will make an effort moving forward to cover the French game as best as we possibly can, in partnership with Treize Mondial in the hope that raising awareness of it encourages its growth – and not just so we can get over to cover a few matches during the UK off-season Thomas Bosc is one of the greatest players France has ever produced so we’ve paid tribute to the Catalans Dragons favourite… The world of French rugby league has seen some exceptional talent grace the field with legends such as Puig Aubert Raymond Contrastin and Jean Dop all making their mark on the game throughout history in recent times one player can now certainly be added among the list of French rugby league greats and that is Bosc Bosc rose through the ranks of French Elite 1 Championship side Union Treiziste XIII Catalans and AS Saint-Esteve merged clubs to create Union Treiziste Within five years they had won the French Championship and two Lord Derby Cups the club made the decision to apply to join the Super League they competed in their inaugural season under the new franchise name Catalans Dragons with Union Teiziste acting as their reserve side in Elite 1 That 2006 season saw Bosc make his debut for Catalans against Castleford in what was only the Dragons’ third match in Super League the then 22-year-old featured sporadically playing more as a full-back In 12 appearances he would go on to score six tries despite the side finishing bottom of the table The Dragons would come into the 2007 season fresh off a strong recruitment drive that included the likes of Clint Greenshields The arrival of Greenshields would force Bosc onto the wing Despite a struggle with injuries he would have his best campaign to date scoring 13 tries in 22 appearances while kicking 68 goals and recording a total of 189 points The same year also saw Bosc and the Dragons etch their way into rugby league history by becoming the first non-British team to reach a Challenge Cup final It may have ended in a crumbling defeat to a dominant St Helens side but it was still a hugely significant moment in terms of the club’s short history Bosc finally got his opportunity to take on a more pivotal role in the halves after the retirement of New Zealand legend Stacey Jones The switch worked wonders as he took over the majority of kicking duties and helped steer his side to the Super League play-offs after finishing third on the ladder The Dragons brilliantly saw off Warrington in the elimination play-off with the French international scoring a try and kicking five conversions as Mick Potter’s side ran out 46-8 winners Their run would be halted by a 56-20 defeat to Wigan in the next round though Bosc took a step back in terms of production primarily due to injury and because of the signing of Scott Dureau from Newcastle Knights in the NRL After being restricted to just eight appearances that year the creative half-back was back fully for 2012 but with Dureau still taking the goal-kicking role The 2013 season would see the versatile back once again take the primary kicking duties and from 2011 to 2014 he was key factor in the Dragons reaching four straight play-offs kicking 185 goals and tallying 445 points in that time span The Dragons may have never gone on to secure silverware during Bosc’s playing career but what he was able to do was bring progress whilst potentially setting them up for future success By the end of his career in 2017 he had made 244 appearances scoring 59 tries and recording 1,374 points during his time in the league whilst being a mainstay for France between 2007-13 on top of competing in two World Cups Although never a flashy or a prolific try-scorer Bosc was as reliable and as consistent as they come A versatile back whose creativity helped him excel in several different positions whether it was either full-back Altogether he finished as Catalans’ top points scorer and to this day he is the only Catalans player to record more than 1,000 points Bosc has been right there and played a significant part in some of their finest moments from steering them to their first-ever Super League play-offs to playing a vital role in the side becoming the first team outside of England to reach the Challenge Cup final before being an integral member of the Dragons coaching staff that helped guide the side to a historic Challenge Cup win in 2018 Contrastin and Dop lit up French rugby league during its golden years to cement their status as arguably three of their greatest performers But even though Bosc was never part of a strong France national side he was still one of its shining lights and most consistent performers for many years He is easily considered one of the country’s greatest The Dragons’ Matthieu Khedimi was released by Catalans as a youngster – but he still dreams of playing in Super League one day who is the son of former France international Mathieu Khedimi only began playing rugby league five years ago and he soon landed a professional contract with Catalans after impressing on trial After graduating from the Under-19s system Khedimi carried on playing with the Dragons’ reserves Impressive performances at hooker for Saint-Esteve saw Khedimi earn his first-grade call-up by Steve McNamara playing in a Challenge Cup match against Hull FC in 2017 it would be the last time he would play for Super League’s only French club before being released Khedimi has been with Carcassonne since the start of the 2018 campaign where he has become one of the standout stars of the Elite One Championship He said: “I played two games with the Catalans first-team – one in a friendly against Wigan and then one in the Challenge Cup against Hull FC “I trained with Catalans a little bit but I played mainly for the reserves I then moved to Carcassonne and it was a good opportunity so I took it “It’s my second year with Carcassonne and we had a good season in my first year here so I decided to stay here for another year.” The Elite One Championship is relatively unknown to British rugby league fans – but it is a competition steeped in history but the French Rugby League Championship was actually formed in 1934 And rugby league is more popular than you’d think with the general public in the south of France Villeneuve and of course Carcassonne competing in it this year Khedimi added: “The Elite One is fantastic because there are a lot of good players “There are a couple of players who come from England New Zealand and Australia to play for the clubs but there is also a lot of good French players some of whom have played for the French national team “It is not the fastest league but it is a tough competition with good players I would say the standard is around the same as low end Championship or top half League 1 “Rugby league is improving in France as we have seen the rise in teams There are new teams being created like Montpellier and Toulon and they are places where there are already big rugby union clubs so it is pretty easy to attract players for rugby league.” And even though Khedimi is happy to ply his trade in France’s Elite One Championship his ultimate goal is to one day play for a Super League club Khedimi passionately continued: “The Elite One Championship is a good level but the Championship (in England) is better and of course the Super League is a lot stronger “It is always a dream to play in the best competitions so you always have to aim for the highest you can.” Watch our Last Tackle podcast, featuring a guest, every
