It seems like Almost Yesterday that the legendary origin of the four rivers of St Francois County was recorded by the writer and historian Allan Hinchey the four rivers flow in different directions The Native American explanation of the unique geographic feature came from the tale of a Shawnee chieftain who lived along Apple Creek with his four sons The sons married and lived in their individual homes in their father’s village the wise chieftain gathered his four sons and walked north until they were standing on a beautiful hill in what is now the southeast corner of St The chief took an arrow and shot it far into the distance and told his eldest son to follow the arrow and that where the arrow landed a stream of water would gush forth telling them that as they could not live together they should live separately each on his own stream which came from where the chief’s arrow pierced the ground Lost your password? Francois County Health Department’s Women and Children (WIC) program hosted a spring party and Easter egg hunt on April 11 at Columbia Park in Park Hills More than 1,300 plastic eggs were scattered near the amphitheater Each egg contained a piece of candy or a ticket with the name of a prize to be collected at the hunt’s end Over a hundred eager hunters were separated into three age groups with specific hunt zones configured specifically for them with bicycles or riding toys donated as grand prizes A garden center was set up where children could plant a tomato or cucumber seed in a cup to take home and watch them grow Upward Smiles donated goody bags with toothbrushes and dental care items The following event sponsors were announced and publicly recognized for their contributions and event support: Belgrade State Bank of Desloge thanked everyone who made the 2025 party and egg hunt possible “All of the community sponsors we contacted were very generous and either donated items specifically or made monetary donations one of the best events we’ve had,” she said Asked if the WIC program might be in danger of funding cuts “I have not heard any concern about the WIC program and I’m just hoping that it’s going that way We just celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2024 so we’ve been established for a while There’s a ton of research that supports the evidence and the benefits that WIC provides for families and children We’re talking lower rates of preterm births which results in lower medical complications for mom and baby.” Reando said the program is valuable on many fronts “It is a huge financial benefit for the community and the country So I’m hopeful we won’t be on the chopping block We usually have a lot of bipartisan support when discussing government stuff for this specific program and the money that goes towards it makes a difference There’s a whole list of statistics and evidence-based information we could go through; it’s just an awesome program,” Francis (Pa.) plans to reclassify from Division I to Division III, the school announced Tuesday, just one week after its men’s basketball team was bounced from the NCAA Tournament in a thrillingly narrow First Four loss Saint Francis lost to Alabama State 70-68 in a No 16-seeded game on March 18 after winning the Northeast Conference to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1991 The school will continue competing in the NEC through the summer of 2026 it will transition into the Division III Presidents’ Athletic Conference for the 2026-27 school year The university said it would file the necessary paperwork with the NCAA and had already accepted an invitation from the PAC Joseph Lehman said in a statement that the decision was not “easy” or “quick” and was made after a vote from the trustees earlier this month “The governance associated with intercollegiate athletics has always been complicated and is only growing in complexity based on realities like the transfer portal pay-for-play and other shifts that move athletics away from love of the game,” Lehman said we aim to best provide resources and support to our student-athletes in this changing environment that aligns with our mission Catholic institution and our community’s expectations.” The university said the Board of Trustees participated in “an extensive discussion and review of their options” for the school’s athletics programs moving forward and said the move to Division III “helps Saint Francis to achieve the institution’s mission and strategic plan.” Some students receiving scholarships will remain eligible to compete no students receiving financial aid will be eligible “All of the university’s offerings that are a core part of the Saint Francis identity and student experience are reviewed by the Board on an ongoing basis including intercollegiate athletics,” Lehman said “Based on the changes in athletics nationally it would be a disservice to our student-athletes and athletic department staff not to review and assess how we can best provide the resources necessary for them to be competitive.” which allows for athletes to share in the television revenue collected by universities is expected to be finalized at an approval hearing on April 7 College sports’ major programs can share up to $20.5 million of their revenue with athletes but have been adjusting to those budget changes as the House settlement has inched closer to reality the amount of money given to athletes can be far smaller but it can be a significant portion of a school’s budget forcing many schools to assess what that means for the future of their athletic programs left the conference after electing to drop its athletic programs Francis College was the smallest school in Division I The were the largest single-day display of political dissent since the 2017 Women’s March and the 2020 racial justice protests with rallies also held in several international cities Organizers and participants cite growing concerns over what they describe as “authoritarian tendencies and executive overreach” under Trump’s renewed leadership Central to the protests were objections to sweeping federal budget cuts and policy shifts implemented by the administration since Trump returned to office in January 2025 due to severe weather conditions on April 5 the original “People’s Veto Day” Florida to participate with friends in Farmington “We are here to show sustained resistance to an agenda threatening our core democratic institutions and American values,” said one local organizer “This is about preserving rights and resources for future generations.” Demonstrators specifically criticized reductions to major federal agencies and social programs Proposed cuts to programs like Social Security The rally attendees ranged in age from pre-teen to patriots and combat veterans in their 90s Those unable to stand sat in lawn chairs or wheelchairs; others stood or navigated the mining began in the early 1700s having produced more than 9 million tons of lead Lead mine waste has been dispersed throughout the area from water and wind erosion along with historic releases directly from the mine waste piles contributed to the contamination of the Big River and were transported downstream and spread onto the floodplain and is divided into five main project areas If you live or recreate along the Big River you are at risk of being exposed to lead and other toxic metals The site is being addressed through federal and Potentially Responsible Party (PRP) actions Activity and use limitations known as institutional controls are also established The disposal of mining waste rock on-site created very large piles (also known as source areas) of mine tailings/chat that have eroded with time Mining waste has also been mechanically transported throughout the site Dust created by wind erosion also contaminated the surrounding area and was a potential hazard to residents large mining waste pile sites that span approximately 110 square miles in size; they include the following sub-sites: 1) Bonne Terre Mine Tailings 3) Elvins Mine Tailings (also known as Rivermines) 5) Desloge Mine Tailings (also known as Big River) Six of the source areas have been addressed through PRP actions and preventing sloughing (flowing) into the river The remaining two areas will be addressed by future actions The county maps (see Properties Sampled and Remediated Properties maps at right) illustrate the site boundaries and over 5,820 residential properties that have been tested for lead contamination over 1,940 residential yards have been remediated and Head Start Early Childhood Centers (since work began in 2000) and EPA and the PRPs will continue to sample and used for recreational purposes such as fishing and canoeing as well as for commercial activities such as watering livestock heavy rains caused an estimated 50,000 cubic yards of lead mining tailings to complete an Interim Record of Decision in late 2022 U-3 consisted of the Interim Program and Halo Removal Action (RA) to address elevated blood lead levels at the site The Interim Program included sampling and remediation of yard sections with greater than 2,000 ppm lead content at properties within 1 mile of the source areas The “Halo” was defined as the area within 500 feet of the source areas 1,000 feet from four identified smelters/calciners The Halo RA included sampling and remediation of residential properties and high child exposure areas (i.e. playgrounds and day cares) with greater than 400 ppm lead content OU-4 focuses on the associated rail lines in St Rail lines that are associated with the existing OUs will be characterized during the RI/FS A PRP search will be Children (NCMEC) the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) arrested 23-year-old Dakota Robert Alexander Shanks of Desloge in early January Thirty-one-year-old Michael Anthony Driemeier a registered sex offender from Bonne Terre Francois County men were subjects of separate investigations for possessing or promoting child sexual abuse material (CSAM) Dakota Robert Alexander Shanks Court records show that the Missouri State Highway Patrol got a NCMEC cyber tip with information from Microsoft reporting three child pornography files uploaded by a user in October 2024 investigators executed the search warrant and spoke with the homeowner who denied using the app to upload CSAM but told police he shared the living space with his grandson but investigators found a gaming computer in his bedroom Investigators conducted an on-scene preview of Shanks’s computer and found more than 30 CSAM files including the three files that had been reported to them by NCMEC Investigators found and interviewed Shanks Court records show Shanks admitted to watching CSAM files on the internet “He was shown sanitized still images of the files reported in the cyber tip,” court records said “He recalled seeing the image described above.” Shanks faces three counts of having CSAM and one count of promoting it His bond was set at $100,000 and he will stand before St Michael Anthony Driemeier According to court records stating that an online service provider reported a file of suspected CSAM was distributed using that platform Using the account username and other information investigators determined the suspect was Driemeier who is a registered sex offender convicted of statutory rape in the second degree in 2016 and 2018; the victim was a 13-year-old female When investigators first contacted Driemeier on Jan He told investigators that he had been notified that the account was deactivated after CSAM was sent from it “Driemeier confirmed the account was his and verified the registered email address,” the probable cause statement said “A consent search of his cellular telephone revealed a Facebook account under the name of ‘Michael Clubb’ and a TikTok account under the name of ‘mikrcks23.’ These accounts were not listed on his Sex Offender Registry.” The failure to list those accounts Driemeier admitted to investigators that he had made up the information about the hacked account He told police he was interacting with what he believed to be a woman online “A full review of his account shows not only did he receive child pornography he also sent multiple files of child pornography on July 31 While reviewing Driemeier’s chat logs investigators found that Driemeier had asked his online counterpart how old the youngest children depicted in the counterpart’s CSAM were Driemeier then shared CSAM featuring a toddler “This investigation has shown Michael Driemeier was previously found guilty of a sexual crime involving a child He was in the Missouri Department of Corrections from 2018 until 2023 when he was released and placed on the Missouri Sexual Offender Registry Driemeier appears to have a sexual interest in children–or at least an interest in viewing nude children on the internet he indicated he had been pondering committing a crime such as a robbery so he could go back to prison,” court records said Driemeier faces one count of failing to register as a sex offender He waived arraignment and a preliminary hearing on Feb 18; he was scheduled to stand before Judge Joseph Murray in March The first game of the tournament features a pair of This comes after the merge with St. Francois County 911 Center. Debbie Statler said it was Saturday, January 25, when her dad Arlin Hadler, began experiencing concerning symptoms. His speech was slurred, he was confused, and then he was unresponsive. His family thought he may be having a stroke — that’s when Statler’s brother called 911. “It rang — it sounded like it was going through, made some noises and then hung up after 12 seconds without speaking to anyone,” Statler said. “Of course, he frantically called 911 again and same thing. Click click click. Nobody answered and after about 15 seconds it was gone again.” Statler said they called 911, the sheriff’s department, the police department, and the hospital — six calls in total — before they finally got an ambulance on the way. She said, given her father’s concerning symptoms a helicopter was dispatched at the same time as the ambulance. Statler followed the ambulance from her parents house in Crosstown to Zion Lutheran Church where the helicopter was waiting in the parking lot. “I wanted to see my dad in that helicopter. So much time had passed, and it sounds kind of crazy, but I wanted to make sure that he was still with us when he got in that helicopter,” she said. Sheriff Jason Klaus said this is the second reported incident of a call not going through to 911 after Perry County officially merged its dispatch services with St. Francois County 911 Center. He said he has been in contact with the family. “We are working with them to establish the the specifics on exactly what happened, where they called the different numbers that they called, and why that call was not transferred the way that we believe that it should have,” he said. “We are working with St. Francois County, as well, with those dates and times to make sure that they can look at it on their end to figure out why this call was not connected.” Klaus wants to reassure people that the system is working. “We’ve had many, many successfully completed 911 calls,” he said. “Obviously, the ones that are missed are of much concern, as well, and we are taking all of those very seriously.” Statler said they learned her father did not have a stroke, though his diagnosis was life-threatening. After receiving necessary treatment he has fully recovered. © 2025 KBSI FOX23 News Cape Girardeau News | Paducah News. Port-au-Prince) – The Saint François de Sales Philosophical Institute in Port-au-Prince organisedCultural Mornings on 9-10 January 2025 due to the difficult situation in the country a path of hope for an authentic humanization" In an increasingly interconnected world where social economic and environmental challenges multiply attention to others is emerging as an essential value for building an authentic humanity but also a necessity if we want to build a future in which everyone feels valued and respected It should also be said that this theme is an invitation to reflect on how the ability to care for others can transform relationships and societies it is essential to explore the different dimensions of this issue both in terms of education and ethics of care and civic engagement it is possible to imagine a humanism that really promotes harmonious coexistence One of the sub-themes discussed was: "Taking care of others in the age of Artificial Intelligence" The topic has raised crucial questions about how Artificial Intelligence (AI) influences human interactions and the distinctly human ability to embrace empathy it is essential to ask how this technology affects one's interest in others Although AI can analyse emotions and improve some aspects of communication it cannot replace human emotional intelligence without the contextual depth and understanding of the nuances that characterise authentic human relationships Integrating Artificial Intelligence into daily life also raises ethical issues The decisions made by these systems can reflect pre-existing prejudices and negatively affect social well-being The need for ethical development of AI is therefore fundamental to ensure that these technologies serve to improve to promote an approach that puts people at the centre This includes raising awareness of the limits of AI and valuing human skills such as empathy By cultivating a genuine concern for others it is possible to transform the challenges posed by AI into opportunities to strengthen social ties and build a more human society taking care of others in the age of Artificial Intelligence requires a deep reflection on one's values and priorities as a society Another sub-theme explored was: "Concern for others and hope for a better future" which addressed the deep relationship between caring for others and building a positive and mutually supportive future In a world often marked by individualism and conflict attention and kindness become essential for creating authentic bonds between individuals caring for others and promoting a climate of trust and mutual respect – essential for building resilient communities when we cultivate attention for others and for ourselves we sow the seeds of significant social change This attitude can lead to concrete actions supporting the most vulnerable or promoting inclusion These collective efforts strengthen the social fabric and encourage a sense of belonging thus contributing to a more equitable and harmonious society it is possible to inspire others and generate a positive domino effect This dynamic can transform challenges into opportunities allowing everyone to dream of a better future By cultivating an environment in which attention to others is appreciated we contribute to forging a world in which future generations can thrive in peace and solidarity attention to others and to oneself is not only an essential human value but also a powerful engine of hope for a better future By integrating this concern into their daily actions it is possible to transform society and build a more just and respectful world for all ANS - “Agenzia iNfo Salesiana” is a on-line almost daily publication the communication agency of the Salesian Serving my country alongside some great Americans coming home with an understanding of how great our country is and how little was my personal sacrifice a tremendous gift that I would never trade He spoke about the importance of accepting ownership and responsibility “If you’ve seen enough movies and know a little about the Marine Corps when a young person comes into the corps a lot of times they may have not had a real success in life We hand them a rifle and they learn the rifleman’s creed which is ‘This is my rifle; there are many like it but this one is mine’ Then they take full responsibility for that rifle–no excuses–and what’s interesting is to watch their transformation as they take ownership of that rifle all of a sudden it’s ‘This is my fire team; these are my buddies; this is my platoon; this is my battalion; this is my city this; is my church So the challenge for the young people out there is this:  how much of your life are you going to say you’re responsible for then I would challenge you to start giving it away in service to others.” He explained the bond that is forged between soldiers when they serve and loyalty to one another that forms through the choice to serve “The veterans that have joined us this morning made that choice to take on responsibility for protecting our country and all the good it stands for The challenge for all of us this morning is to take ownership of our lives and then fill that life with responsibility for others to earn this It’s a great day to be a citizen of this community and God bless the United States of America
