Architecture photographer Ana Amado has shared with us a set of photographs featuring Álvaro Siza's recently inaugurated Church of Saint-Jacques de la Lande, in Rennes—the first church built in Brittany, France this century
this church is built in white concrete and pays special attention to the natural light
cylinders and incisions—add to the overall mass of the building
distinguishing it from the neighboring housing blocks
while the use of few openings helps to establish a solid
permanent presence in the natural environment

Located in a residential neighborhood on the outskirts of the city of Rennes
the volumes of the new parish church strike up a dialogue with the housing blocks that surround them
the building is the result of the intersection of a parallelepiped of 16 x 16 x 12.5 (first floor) and a cylinder with a 14.75-meter diameter (second floor)
Other than a liturgical space with seats for a congregation of 136
around which the rest of the program is laid out
the project houses a parish center with offices
The building is executed with loadbearing walls of white concrete
the outer surfaces of which reveal the modular scheme of the formwork
As for the interior surfaces (including the flooring)
they are clad with marble up to a height of 150 centimeters
while the rest is plastered and painted white

paris-based firm LAN architecture has just completed a new town hall in saint-jacques de la lande
the approach to the scheme has created an efficient and contemporary landmark for the city center and at the same time
the layout is a nod to the long architectural history of city halls
the building is wrapped in two façades
the exterior envelope is defined by two layers; each one responding to a different function
the outer layer is wrapped in steel and simultaneously provides a protection from the sun and the second
‘thicker’ façade for thermal performance
the approach to the interior revolves around overlapping spaces and capitalizing on transparency
‘the architectural project is based on an image of unity
and clarity that fosters a strong sense of identity without falling into the cliché of emblematic representations of power.’ comments the design team at LAN
the building acts as a catalyst for social interactions
the interior was developed as a light-filled space with overlapping spaces
a fluid sense of circulation enables people to naturally move around from one office to the full and the empty spaces surrounding the central hall make it natural and intuitive for users to move from one office to another
the hall’s double height seeks to connect the core of the building with the secondary entrance from the upper square
the timber paneling adds warmth to the space
a fluid sense of circulation enables people to naturally move around from one office to the other
the approach to the scheme has created an efficient and contemporary landmark for the commune

it was designed by Pritzker winner Álvaro Siza
Portuguese architect and Pritzker winner Álvaro Siza recently completed the Church of Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande in the region of Brittany, France. The chunky building, which is the region’s first new church to be built in the 21st century
features a white concrete construction that mimics the facade of nearby housing blocks in the area
the minimalist structure’s silhouette takes the general shape of a block
from which a large cylindrical form appears to emerge
These curves call to mind the dramatic curves and swoops of Le Corbusier’s Notre Dame du Haut
also in France (and undoubtedly a reference)
The church’s main worship space is located in the upper circular volume and can accommodate up to 126
while the ground floor is reserved for social and administrative functions
Other programs include a side chapel that holds the baptismal font
and a semicircular apse where a tabernacle is located
sunlight enters through clerestory windows and from above

The Pritzker Prize winning architect, Álvaro Siza
has completed a white concrete church in France's Brittany region
consecrated over the weekend in the presence of over 300 people
is the first church built in the area in over 40 years—the only
The sacred building, costing 3 million euros, was ordered by the diocese of Rennes to better meet current needs. Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande, a commune in the Northwestern part of France
has a thriving Catholic community and the new church is more centrally located to where people live
near the residential area south of Rennes with five-story housing blocks
combines a minimalistic aesthetic with an opening onto the city
His use of light and white concrete provides a unique ceremonial space that is integrated into the urban fabric while distinguishing itself in form from the repetitive architecture of the nearby dwellings
The building stands 12 meters high and is two stories
a parish center provides a kitchen space and modular rooms separated by sliding doors that can be used for social and administrative needs
displays a refined style with white marble flooring and oak furniture
is reminiscent of the churches of the first centuries; the Archbishop of Rennes likened the initial drawings and plans to the 326 AD Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem
Siza is no stranger to designing sacred spaces—his Santa Maria Church in Marco de Canaveses is what drew the diocesan association
along with consulting architect Jean-Pierre Pranlas-Descours
to tap the award-winning Portuguese architect for the project

FRANCE: Rennes Line B was opened on September 20
the first to use Siemens Mobility’s Cityval version of its Neoval rubber tyre automated light metro platform
The 14 km Line B runs from Saint-Jacques-Gaité through the city centre to Cesson-Viasilva with 15 stations
following the success of Line A which opened in 2002 using the VAL208 system and now carries 140 000 passengers/day
Siemens Mobility won the Line B contract in 2010
a cut-and-cover section at La Courrouze station and 2·4 km of viaduct with three elevated stations
while the control centre is co-located with Line A to reduce costs and facilitate network-wide co-ordination
Keolis has the contract to operate public transport services in Rennes under the STAR brand
The company has 80 people working on the operation and maintenance of Line B
a third of whom were internal transfers and all are able to work on both lines
Maintenance is undertaken with support from Siemens Mobility
with funded from Rennes Métropole (€576·30m)
Ille-et-Vilaine département (€30m) and the European Union (€14m)
The end-to-end journey time on Line B is 21 min
and at peak times services run every 2 min 15 sec
Ridership is predicted at 110 000 passengers/day
which was exceeded with 120 000 passengers on the opening day
The opening of Line B puts 73% of Rennes municipality residents near a metro station
and on October 24 the bus network will reconfigured to provide better connections with the new line and across the metropolitan area
Rennes municipality expects the city’s transport network to carry 112 million passengers in 2025
said Line B would be a showcase for Cityval
which would help win further orders for the latest iteration of the VAL light metro system which was first launched in Lille in 1983
Toulouse and Lille and manufacturing in Vienne
There are many French subsuppliers including Texelis and Saft
It features Siemens Mobility’s Trainguard Mass Transit CBTC
and platform edge screens from Kaba Gilgen
Cityval trains have rubber tyres running on a concrete track
with a central guide rail and 750 V DC power supply fed from near the central rail
maximum vertical curvature 200 m radius and horizontal curvature 30 m
enabling Cityval lines to take a winding course
with the timetable requiring 21 in traffic
The two-car trainsets are 22·4 m long and 2 650 mm wide with wide gangways
The trains have CCTV and passenger information screens
but the customer opted against air-conditioning
because of the short journey times and with much of the route being in tunnel
Cityval offers the ability to insert cars up to a maximum of nine per trainset
and Line B has provision for future extension of the trains to three-car sets 35 m long
Siemens Mobility is currently building Neoval metros for airports in Bangkok and Frankfurt
with opening planned for early 2023 and July 2024
FRANCE: Conduent Transportation has implemented a contactless EMV open payment system on the STAR public transport network in Rennes
which is operated by Keolis and used by 353 000 passengers/day
More than 1 500 validators with integrated EMV contactless payment functionality have been installed on the ..
FRANCE: A spacious interior tailored to short hops is at the heart of the Cityval metro car being supplied to operate Line B of the automated light metro network in Rennes
On display at the InnoTrans trade show in Berlin
the two-section Cityval car is one of 25 vehicles ..

Described as "a pure architectural project" by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira
the Hillside Chapel he recently completed has no electricity
the modest chapel relies on natural ventilation
and clever use of materials such as insulated bricks and limestone to create an off-grid
conceptually interesting materialization of faith
One of Portugal’s most celebrated architects, the Pritzker Prize winner was approached to design the Capela do Monte by a Swiss-American couple
who have been living in Portugal's Algarve region since the mid-1980s
are building out a spiritual retreat in the country's southernmost region for which the non-denominational space will serve as a focal point
the Monte da Charneca Center will contain seven typical houses
original to the site and restored over the past 30 years with the help of a local heritage architect
Siza has also advised on the masterplan for the retreat
which will add a handful of new residential structures and facilities to help revitalize traditional agricultural activity and welcome visitors
it relies on clean lines and the use of natural light with striking effect
Murals depicting scenes from the birth
The design is separate in administrative area in the "U" building
and another area for the residence of the members of the archdiocese
The buildings exploit the natural slope towards a ravine to blend with the environment and go unnoticed by relying on the use of a green roof.
Description of project by Mallol&Mallol ArquitectosThe venue for the episcopal conference is inserted in an area of lush green vegetation in an area of detached houses in Clayton
The project was to design the facilities to provide the Catholic Church and its bishops an appropriate and functional venue that allowed them to fully develop their administrative activities. The program
demanded to be executed in phases so it was decided to separate the program in separate pavilions
it was reduced to an administrative area in the "U" building
and another area for the residence of the members of the archdiocese. One goal of the design team was accessibility for people with disabilities to all buildings
we have taken into account international European standards that set requirements and minimum dimensions of services in access
stairs and elevators widths. The buildings exploit the natural slope towards a ravine to blend with the environment and go unnoticed by relying on the use of a green roof
The location of existing trees is kept by placing both buildings so as to form a courtyard like a cloister around which all circulations are established in plan. The building envelope is made using a prefabricated modular concrete system forming a sequence of solids and voids framing views of the surrounding landscape
a serial shadow sifting the interior environment. It was a commitment and purpose to show the client that you can make a religious architecture with a contemporary language that also communicates with its surroundings and is enjoyed by all

The Rennes-based ALTA agency (Maxime Le Trionnaire and Gwenaël Le Chapelain) has delivered the Aviator
a 52-home (3,462 m2 GFA) program in Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande (Ille-et-Vilaine)
The project is composed of two buildings linked by a planted slab
Located on former army industrial and storage sites in the Mermoz sector of the ZAC la Courrouze (mixed development zone) in the Rennes metropolitan area
the Aviator is a housing development completed by the requalification and redevelopment of the boulevard Jean Mermoz
This new gateway to the city gives pride of place to soft mobility (bicycles and pedestrians)
directing traffic to the Saint-Jacques-Gaîté Multimodal Inter- change Hub (bus
the buildings of the various blocks in this sector are laid out in a comb-like pattern
with the urban planners (Studio Paola Vigano) having designed regular sequences of alternating buildings and landscaped areas (valleys and planted slabs) to create north/south porosities
Each block is designed along the same pattern: two buildings perpendicular to the boulevard
linked by a planted slab above the semi- underground parking lot
ALTA’s project is composed of two buildings from GF+5 to GF+2 to create an urban signal on the boulevard Jean Mermoz and to insert beautiful terraces to the south that open onto the landscape
The planted slab overhanging the street unifies the composition and provides a green space for exchanges and meetings
carved into the building volume and located in the corners
protected from the nuisance of the street by a masonry window sill
where these nuisances are less of a concern
the housing units open out onto the distant landscape via stepped terraces
The Aviator project offers a variety of housing types: Compact T2 or T3 apartments on the street
souplexes with small gardens on the west facade
and homes with independent entrances and large terraces on the planted slab
the layout of the hollow joints and the recesses are enhanced by a light grey stain
The wood- work and locksmithing warm up the overall effect with a brown hue
echoing the stone wall on the opposite side of the boulevard
differentiated by large trapezoidal bays borrowing from the vocabulary of arcades
Based on a social rental loan (BRS) scheme
this program is exemplary in its social mix: 52 housing units
9 free-access units and 16 units covered by the social rental loan scheme
the association Habitat et Humanisme Ille-et-Vilaine has fitted out 14 apartments and a third-living space in one of the Aviator’s two business units
These units can be rented/su- blet for a limited period of time under a temporary occupancy agreement
as the ZAC la Courrouze (Joint Development Zone) is committed to sustainable excellence
and to better anticipate future housing regulations
a series of measures integrated into the development of new housing has resulted in the certification of a performance level specific to the district: NF Habitat HQE Courrouze
which is one of the first projects to be built in the Mermoz sector
is pushing the boundaries in terms of environ- mental quality
requiring all its operations to reach the ”Excellent” level (9 stars)
compared with the ”Very High Performance” level (6 stars) for the rest of the ZAC

Vulnerability of the Rennes Métropole territory to clay shrinkage and swelling: hazard map drawn up for the Ille-et-Vilaine département
The shrinkage and swelling of clays causes considerable damage every year in France; it can be compensated as a natural disaster
It is therefore necessary to characterise it precisely
two-thirds of the département’s surface is exposed to this phenomenon
medium (4% of the area) or high (less than 1% of the area) levels
BRGM teams will carry out a field campaign in twenty communes in the Rennes metropolitan area
in order to produce a precise map of the nature of the clays and the shrink-swell phenomenon
In sectors of the Rennes metropolitan area
which swell in the presence of water and shrink in the event of drought
When buildings are built on these formations
the alteration of these clays can cause damage to the structure: cracks
While there is already a departmental map of this geological risk (available on the Géorisques website)
it is not accurate enough to describe the phenomenon at the communal and plot level
through the Ille-et-Vilaine Departmental authority for inland and marine areas
Rennes Métropole and BRGM have joined forces to carry out a study to determine plot by plot
those sectors vulnerable to a high and medium risk
This study is co-financed up to 60% by the State
In order to obtain accurate data on the nature of the ground
a team of geophysicists and geologists from BRGM will be visiting certain sectors of the communes of Rennes Métropole during the second half of May and the first half of June
The following municipalities are concerned: Le Rheu
The data collected will be used to produce a precise map of the shrinkage-swelling of clay
The new hazard maps will be available in a public report from BRGM
Information leaflets on the phenomenon of clay shrinkage and swelling
recommendations and construction measures will also be made available to the population by Rennes Métropole
