The SSJB was founded in Montreal in 1834 by Ludger Duvernay (1799-1852) with the purpose of retaining the French language and culture in the New World. June 24, 1834, was the first celebration of Saint Jean Baptiste Day in Quebec and is now an established provincial holiday
As French Canadians dispersed across the border in the mid-19th century
branches of the SSJB grew in francophone parishes like St
Peter’s was considered a “linguistic church,” becoming a home for francophone immigrants
as opposed to a “territorial church” like St
The SSJB emphasized fraternity and support of family
helping immigrants to establish themselves with security in this area
Eventually societies sprung up in the USA wherever francophone communities settled. By 1930 an estimated 900,000 Quebecois had moved to the northeastern United States. At that time, the SSJB of St. Peter’s had close ties with the Societies in Fall River and Fitchburg, Mass. In 1939 Canada merged its 12 affiliated societies into a single federation numbering 5,000 members increasing to 200,000 members by 1960
In 1969, the SSJB of Quebec became the Mouvement National des Quebecois (MNQ) with a strong political agenda
Ultimately their battle for francophone linguistic rights was more successful than the battle for Quebec sovereignty
the Society grew rapidly in the early 20th century
Men between the ages of 16 and 48 were inducted
some of whom were still attending secondary school
Their occupations reflect the times: cigar maker
many anglicized through the years; Lebois becoming Wood
The early application fees ranged from $.25 to $1.25
and each applicant had to have a medical exam
Women were admitted in the Society under the same conditions as men
the SSJB Honor Guard paraded for the 60th anniversary of St
and the Honor Guard was invited to participate in large gatherings in Fitchburg
the Guard was awarded a cup for those who had traveled the farthest to attend
a letter of regret was penned to “La Jeune Garde du Sacre-Coeur,” Fall River
Military service in World War I may have diminished their ranks or affected their ability to travel out of the area
The United States entered World War I on April 6
An undated statement of that time in the CCHA collection opens: “The following resolutions were presented by Dr
LaRocque and unanimously adopted: Resolved that the members of the St
Jean Baptiste Society endorse and approve heartily
the action of the President of the United States
who… was forced to declare the country in a state of war with the German Empire
And concludes: Resolved that the members of the Society… offer their services to the mayor of the city
however he may judge necessary.” With no background cited for this proclamation
Since the members were largely francophone and/or recent arrivals to Plattsburgh
such a statement may have been made to assure the community of its loyalty to the USA in a time of war
“Active members” in the SSJB contributed to the insurance plans
“Social members” carried no insurance but joined the Society for patriotic and social reasons
Life insurance certificates ranged from $250 to $10,000
These member benefits were of great value in an era when social security benefits and workers compensation from employers were lacking
Peter’s maintained a strong liaison with francophone countries and their culture
singing old Canadian and French songs helped to build fellowship and to retain the language and folk heritage
Card playing and entertainment for children attracted families to the bi-monthly meetings
over 300 parishioners were enrolled in the SSJB and its Councils
A Girls’ Guard was organized by the Council Ste
the work of the SSJB always offered great encouragement and satisfaction to the clergy of St
The SSJB flourished in the early 20th century, at a time when anglophone Societies were growing in the church and in the community. As the francophone population became assimilated, the SSJB ceased to exist locally after World War Two
These days one is more likely to hear French spoken at the beach or in the mall than along the streets of the old French Quarter. But the names of Montcalm Avenue, Champlain Street, Lafayette Street and Beaumont Street that encompass St. Peter’s Church bear witness to the early vibrant chapters of the francophone history of Plattsburgh
Her 36 year teaching career spanned six different schools and colleges
she has discovered that researching history can be fun and interesting
following in the footsteps of her late husband former City Historian Jim Bailey

says
Is it my impression that Francophone Canadians assimilated (or lost their language and culture) more readily than some other ethnic groups

a member of the Daughters of Charity of St
often greeted visitors to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Charity in Miami
known as “La Ermita,” with a smile that was full of kindness and a little mischief
She believed so much in expressing the joy of the Lord that aside from verbally reminding others that God loves them
she even recorded the message in her voicemail saying
Sister Olga was 77 when she suddenly fell sick on a retreat in Havana
her family in Miami said goodbye via FaceTime
“Her vocation was born in Cuba; she served her entire life in Cuba
And while she lived here in Miami with her order and her family
Among the many things he will remember about his aunt
and to be a joyful priest,” said Father Gomez
who serves as dean of the propaedeutic program at St
to Jose Ramon Gomez and Olga Jañez in Alquizar
who later married her childhood best friend
remembers when the family said good-bye to his aunt Olga on October 3
as she entered the postulant stage of her vocation with the Daughters of Charity of St
It was her first time leaving home to live somewhere else
and we took her to the convent,” he recalled
“We celebrated that day every year,” said Gomez
who called his aunt’s vocation a joyful one
Sister Olga professed first vows in September 1983 at Immaculate Conception
She dedicated much of her life to serving the poor and the sick
La Edad de Oro Psychopedagogical Medical Center
and in a hospital in the Santuario Rincon de San Lazaro
She also served in the Cuban communities of Bejucal
She became a sister to be in the island with her people,” said Gomez
Sister Olga left Cuba with a “heavy heart” when she was relocated to Miami
she has returned to Cuba every year for her annual retreat
she returned to Miami and worked at the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity
“That ministry of welcoming at La Ermita came to her as a blessing
She loved walking around the property and would love sitting in El Malecon and talking to people,” Gomez said
He believes that Sister Olga passed her love for Jesus Christ to all who knew her
becoming the “wise and funny Cuban aunt” to those with whom she spoke
but she could also be very tough and strong of character when needed
that one hour a week for the Lord is not enough for a healthy spiritual life
“You have to always look for something else to do
But don’t let a week pass when the only thing you did was go to Mass on Sunday,” said Gomez
Sister Olga always shared positive messages with her family
reminding them to be happy and to trust the Lord with their joys and challenges
they made it a point to call her at least once a week
The Gomez family is grateful for the outpouring of love and appreciation for Sister Olga
A nickname given to her by Father Matthew when he was a child
it is short for “tía” or “aunt” in Spanish
in a mausoleum belonging to the Daughters of Charity of St
A Mass was celebrated for her at the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity in Miami Nov
where many gathered to remember her joyful spirit and lifelong dedication to service
May all the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God

I joined them on a visit to a property in Kenwood

but I understood one word: "revisit." And trust me
but every time I’m asked about the origins of my passion for wine—whether as a consumer
or writer—all roads lead back to Chateau St
I can still vividly recall my host sharing the story of how Cinq Cépages paved the way for the winery’s success

A recent excavation at Mont-Saint-Jean farm near Waterloo has uncovered a grisly reminder of the Battle of Waterloo
Led by the organization Waterloo Uncovered
composed of archaeologists and military veterans
unearthed a unique trench filled with human and animal remains
This discovery sheds new light on the aftermath of the historic battle that marked the end of Napoleon Bonaparte’s reign and the Napoleonic Wars
claimed the lives of at least 20,000 soldiers
served as a field hospital for the Duke of Wellington’s forces
The recent excavation focused on a trench believed to have been purposefully dug to clear the hospital of the dead and dying after the battle
It contained both human and animal remains
separated by a barrier made from ammunition boxes stripped from soldiers’ satchels
Archaeologists believe this layout may have been an attempt by soldiers to maintain dignity and respect for the fallen amid the horrors of war
an archaeologist from the University of Glasgow and the academic lead for the excavation
explained: “I can’t think of any other site that has this combination of elements – it’s truly unique
with all animal remains on one side of the ammunition box barrier and all the human remains on the other
strongly suggests that the men who buried this individual attempted to offer him a level of dignity and respect despite the horrific scene they would have found themselves facing while clearing the field hospital of the dead.”
the team found the skeletons of seven horses
Evidence suggests that three of the horses had been euthanized with musket shots to the head
and some of the animals showed signs of butchery
Excavations conducted in 2022 had already revealed a lone human skeleton
along with the remains of horses and amputated limbs
Researchers now believe that more than 500 limbs may have been amputated at the Mont-Saint-Jean field hospital
where surgery was conducted without the benefit of anesthesia or antibiotics
were often left “in the lap of the gods,” with survival being uncertain
a Welsh Guards veteran and participant in the dig
the excavation has been a deeply personal experience
Jones was stationed with the Household Cavalry during the 1982 Hyde Park Bombing
which killed 11 military personnel and seven cavalry horses
Reflecting on the discovery of the horse skeletons
“I thought the soldier would affect me the most
It just brought me back to the horrors of that day.”
Waterloo Uncovered is a pioneering initiative that blends archaeological research with veteran support
offering former service members a chance to heal through participation in battlefield excavations
The program provides both historical insights and mental health support
allowing veterans to work through their own traumas while unearthing the stories of the soldiers who fought centuries before
While historical accounts often focus on military strategy and political outcomes
the site at Mont-Saint-Jean farm reveals the harsh realities of battlefield injuries and the efforts made to care for the wounded
It also offers a broader perspective on the multinational forces that fought against Napoleon
“This site gives us a real snapshot of what happened after the battle,” Pollard explained
“It includes the stripping of all uniform elements from dead soldiers
and even the use of butchered animals for survival
It’s a stark reminder of the human and animal cost of war.”

the AS Monaco players perfectly negotiated their first match of the competition against L’Union Saint-Jean
by winning 4-1 at the Stadium de Toulouse.✍️
From the start of the match, the Rouge et Blanc had a monopoly on the ball and Takumi Minamino saw his shot blocked by a defender (10′), before coming up short against Rabyi, whom he had tried to chip (17′). The opposing goalkeeper could do nothing though about a shot from Eliesse Ben Seghir, ideally found at the back by Breel Embolo (20′). Already having scored against PSG
the Moroccan international did the same four days later
Jordan Teze’s shot from 30 meters went over (27′)
then one from the Japanese midfielder hit the post (32′)
before a shot on the turn by our the number 36 flashed over (35′)
This impressive period would finally be concretized two minutes later when Vanderson doubled the lead from close range (37′)

to prevent the opponent from reducing the score
making a sublime save in front of Capdeville (40′)
This opportunity did not trouble the Rouge et Blanc
though as they obtained a penalty won by Taki’ before the break (45+3′)
Breel Embolo was denied by the Union Saint-Jean goalkeeper (45+5′)
Kassoum Ouattara came on and was quick to show himself but missed the target from six meters (47′)
The same thing happened for Takumi Minamino’s shot which flirted with the post (51′)
Success then eluded the Rouge et Blanc again since the Japanese international also missed a penalty won by Jordan Teze (58′)
who was definitely making all the right moves
added a third shortly thereafter with a shot from 25 meters to kill any suspense (65′)

The match was now all but over but the players of the club from the Principality were not slowing down. Having come on, George Ilenikhena distinguished himself twice but first came up against the goalkeeper (72′)
before another shot smashed off the post (73′)
the hosts did not give up and reduced the score through Tournier
The match then became crazy and finally the Monaco striker was rewarded for his efforts by scoring our fourth goal (91′)
This was the last chance of this Round of 64 of the Coupe de France, synonymous with qualification for the Round of 32 for AS Monaco, the draw for which will take place this Sunday at 7:45 p.m. Now, it’s time for the holidays before the resumption of competition scheduled on January 5 with the Trophée des Champions against Paris Saint-Germain

2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Workers at the Mondor apparel plant in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu
have voted strongly in favour of strike action if needed to back their efforts to negotiate a fair collective agreement with the company
most of whom are seamstresses and assemblers
produce tights and apparel for women and for dancing
members of the Syndicat des Métallos/United Steelworkers union (USW)
to counter the company’s refusal to offer wage increases in the current round of bargaining
A five-year collective agreement previously negotiated between the parties includes a provision to re-open negotiations on wages and bonuses after three years
the company has refused to offer any increase in compensation for the next two years
The employer has attempted to justify its proposed two-year wage freeze by claiming financial difficulties
but it has categorically refused to open its books and demonstrate transparency regarding those claims
it's the same story – the employer brings out the violins to justify impoverishing these seamstresses,” said Chantal Lalancette
“These women deserve a decent wage,” Lalancette said
Many of the highly experienced seamstresses are paid on a piecework basis
and their wages hover around $23 an hour in general
The USW has requested the intervention of a government-appointed conciliator in the next round of negotiations
“We can’t allow for our members’ working and living standards to decline
when their employer refuses to be transparent about its real financial situation,” said USW union representative Martin Courville
we’ve seen this employer limit its hiring and increasingly resort to using subcontractors
There are limits to how far you can exploit skilled workers who have been so dedicated to producing quality products,” Courville said
they will be able to count on the resources and support of the entire USW/Syndicat des Métallos union
“Our tradition of solidarity within all of our local unions is well-known
and it applies as much to our largest units as it does to this unit of 25 workers who have decided they deserve to be respected and to be paid what they are worth,” Courville said
The Syndicat des Métallos/United Steelworkers
affiliated to the Quebec Federation of Labour
is the largest private-sector union in Quebec
representing more than 60,000 workers in all sectors of the economy

and Bozoma Saint John and I are enjoying a spread of Greek food at Avra in Midtown Manhattan
The lively restaurant is a power-lunch favorite among the many finance
and business professionals that work in the neighborhood
and Saint John’s Olivier Rousting-designed bodycon dress is a far sartorial cry from the suits
But the former marketing executive turned entrepreneur and Real Housewife of Beverly Hills wouldn’t have it any other way
“I tried the gray suit and I still got terrible reviews,” she says of her years spent in high-profile roles at PepsiCo
wearing a button-down shirt and my gray slacks
and I still don’t fit in; I was still louder
and Blacker than people they’d seen before.”
After settling on a custom Mimmy Yeboah gown for her RHOBH debut
she committed to wearing Black designers exclusively whenever she was on camera
“I want the audience to know that Black girls can own expensive bags and shoes and outfits,” she says
I can show up with all the things [my castmates] have
the Malibu home that Saint John shared with her teenage daughter was lost in the devastating Los Angeles wildfires—and with it
including some she acquired with her late husband
but we had a lot of stuff over there,” she says
“I would call it more like my family home—my wider family home—because I had a keypad on the door so everybody could come in
my sister and her fiancé had been staying there
and before that my other sister was over there
My nail tech stayed there for New Year’s; one of my best friends
Though the experience has understandably shaken Saint John
“I’m having a great time,” she says of her foray into the Real Housewives franchise
“This is my time to show up exactly as who I am.”
We’re so sorry about your home—how have you and your daughter been since the fire
She’s 15 and this is a very devastating and unsettling situation to be in
I don’t know how to give her the confidence that everything will be fine when our home burned down to the ground; I don’t have that confidence right now
but she has other friends who have been impacted
so she has a community to commune with and help balance some of those fears
I would never guess that your confidence is rattled
Saint John in a Mimmy Yeboah dress and overcoat
how did the opportunity to join Real Housewives of Beverly Hills come about
I have been a fan of [the Atlanta offshoot] forever
And it also helped that I actually know Cynthia Bailey for real
when I left corporate and published my book
I took a few meetings about potential jobs but nothing felt like anything I wanted to do
So I decided to build my hair and beauty company
and in the middle of that came the opportunity for the Housewives
“We’ve been trying to get to you for years.” But I wouldn’t have done it in the past—I had too much going on
I love the fashion of the Beverly Hills girls
When I was interested in joining I binged all the seasons
and their personalities really show through what they wear
I knew exactly what they were bringing with what they were wearing
I feel like that is taboo to say in some circles
Saint John in an Amsale dress and Telfar bags
how did the idea to wear exclusively Black designers come about
I’ve always been intentional about what I wear
The only person I trusted to do it the way I needed it to be done was Mimmy Yeboah
so she knows all my measurements and usually gets it right
I can’t come out here with even half-an-inch off.” So she flew from Ghana
I think every single look—it doesn’t matter if I’m at home cooking with my daughter or if I’m going to lunch or I’m going to the ball—I don't care where I’m going
Saint John in a Yaura Fashion set and Tru Face by Grace earrings
What does this look like in terms of planning
Did you get a filming schedule and plan all your looks ahead of time
I would say that I know what I’m doing a couple of days beforehand
What am I going to wear to lunch with so-and-so
But it just meant that I had to just continue to call in outfits
I got a rack and then pulled out everything in my closet that was by Black designers
and then pulled out all my jewelry by Black designers too
The challenge was that three weeks into filming I was like
So then I was calling designers that I knew to be like
It did become a little bit of a challenge as the weeks went on because I didn’t have enough in my own closet and I wanted to continue
But it also pointed out that I don’t know enough Black designers
Saint John in Ivy Park (above and at right)
This is like the fifth Ivy Park outfit she’s worn.” But they’re so easy because they match already
So you put it on and people think you put in some kind of effort
Dapper Dan made a set custom for me when he was partnering with Gucci
I came up to Harlem and he helped me pick the fabric
and we picked the appliqués—the whole thing
Saint John in Nichole Lynel denim and a Chanel x Pharrell Williams bag
Saint John in a Dapper Dan Harlem x Gucci set and Jordan Brand sneakers
You came onto the show very well-versed in fashion
but has your intentionality about your looks been a learning experience at all
obviously I’m going to do old Black Hollywood
I was looking up photos of Dorothy Dandridge and Eartha Kitt and I was like
Who designed the dresses that they’re wearing
Yes—the woman who designed the Playboy bunny costume
And I felt so ridiculous; I’m a fashion girl and I don’t know Zelda Wynn Valdes
Well Black designers aren’t always part of the fashion history conversation
They’re not; we don’t talk about them enough
here we go—we’re going to make something referencing these designs; I like the bodice here
but other people went and bought their dress from somebody
Your sense of style has a flair for the dramatic
My mother is a fashion designer by [training]
but she never got a chance to pursue it professionally
But she’s a fashionable person and she was a homemaker
When she married my dad and had me and my three sisters
she sewed out of a little studio in our house
I’ve always been around sewing machines and fabrics and patterns and needle and thread
she gave me a sewing machine for Christmas
and I designed my wedding dress and she sewed it
I have never been afraid of inserting myself into my fashion
And sewing your own clothes—or having garments custom-made or tailored—is very common in Ghanaian culture
I don’t know how many times somebody has been like
I don’t like those jeans because the waist is too big.” And I’m just like
Why can’t you just take it to a tailor and get the waist taken in
I’ll do it.” I’ve always felt that I should be in my clothes
Her name is Quisa and she’s amazing
and then she drilled little holes in my nails and we put earrings on them
Which Housewives’ personal style resonates with you the most
She did a confessional once where two leopard heads were sticking off her shoulders
She sticks to her lane and it hits every single time
Saint John in a Soley Fit set with her daughter
Last question: Are you having fun being a Real Housewife
and the conflicts are really fascinating to me
all of the women in the main cast are single or separated
It’s great to be a single mom who is raising a Black 15-year-old girl
and getting to show what that’s like on TV
This conversation has been edited and condensed

Message from the Dean on the theme “French
The Y-shaped peninsula isn’t just a magnet for the ultra-rich
It boasts a remarkable blend of cultural and economic vitality
Known as the most expensive area in France
the peninsula has a reputation of being inaccessible
whereas in reality the town has a wide range of activities all year round
as well as an authenticity that is rare on the French Riviera
We interviewed the mayor of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat
Jean-François Dieterich as the town celebrates its 120th anniversary
The municipality was officially created in 1904
when in administrative terms it was separated from Villefranche-sur-Mer by presidential decree
It followed the example of Beaulieu-sur-Mer
the cape was just rock and there was no water
and introduced from the end of the 19th century onwards
What makes our town special is its subtle balance between tradition and modernity
It’s a village that has managed to retain its authenticity
with a centuries-old history of fishing and unique heritage sites such as the Saint-Hospice chapel and emblematic homes
Saint-Jean is particularly attractive for its rich village life
People enjoy getting together for folk and traditional events
we have a clientele that is looking for more intimacy and authenticity
I don’t set out to cultivate that image
Having wealthy residents contributes to the local economy by generating jobs and supporting local trade
I want the town to remain accessible and welcoming for everyone
Saint-Jean is an authentic village with a population that is proud of its history and traditions
Our approach to that challenge is a comprehensive events policy
ranging from local festivities such as the Pumpkin Festival and cultural events
to innovative environmental projects throughout the year
with families who live locally and whose children attend our schools
This also requires affordable housing to keep our families here
I don’t want us to become a commuter town
which helps bring in high-quality visitors to the town
One of our flagship projects is the development of a 27,000 m² quarry that we have just acquired and which was used to build the port of Monaco
agricultural and beekeeping projects there
and perhaps even produce Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat olive oil
We have also renovated the harbour and are thinking about a new yacht club
with a new 200-space car park under the current one on the beach
and we will pursue our efforts to keep the shops open
There are hardly any empty commercial premises in Saint-Jean now
We have introduced strict measures to contain urban development
in particular through the Métropole’s Local Urban Development Plan
compliance with the French Coastal Act and classified areas
Having historic monuments nearby puts a block on certain types of construction projects
All of which helps encourage building in harmony with the surroundings
We are also investing in energy-efficient LED street lighting that switches off automatically at midnight
and climate-appropriate planting to keep water consumption to a minimum
We also want to develop fitness circuits that promote sustainable tourism and sport
His Serene Highness is very committed to preserving the environment
He supports a number of our initiatives and has often visited
whether to inaugurate the quay or events such as the postcard and stamp exhibition
Prince Albert and his wife came to live here after the twins were born
I would also like to develop something of a synergy with the Yacht Club de Monaco
My priority is to preserve the authenticity and quality of life for which Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is renowned
We will continue to develop environmentally-friendly projects on land and at sea
It’s a permanent balance that must be maintained at all costs

Race One: Simon Langenfelder took the opening moto win after passing race leader Liam Everts and controlling the race from the front
Andrea Adamo also got by Everts who took third but extended his championship lead with de Wolf finishing sixth after a mid-pack start having had to gate from the outside thanks to his DNF yesterday
The second MX2 was race of the season so far with Adamo
Everts and Lagenfelder all leading as well as Sacha Coenen
But Coenen’s holeshot was short-lived after another huge crash on the first downhill
That left Everts and Lagenfelder battling out front but Benistant and Adamo were coming
Everts got into the lead with Benistant and Adamo then blowing by Lagenfelder before the duo got Everts as well and entered their own battle for the win
Benistant led for a long time but Adamo wouldn’t go away as Everts droppen back to fifht with De Wolf on the charge and pushing Lagenfelder back up to the battle for the lead
It was four riders within four seconds with finve minutes to go as Benistant hesitated slightly on the outside of a turn and Adamo made the pass for the lead
Benistant passed him back immediately only for Adamo to hit back again
Two laps to go and De Wolf went off track forcing him to settle for fourth but Benistant wasn’t settling for anything and he threw the kitchen sink at Adamo
somehow stayed up and attacked again but it wasn’t enough as Adamo somehow held on
I don’t know how many days (since his last GP win) but it feels good
I am happy to be back to feel that fire that I can be competitive
if you miss a little bit out of the corner it’s not easy
happy and hope to keep this momentum.”

The spirit of the Coupe de France is still going strong: this weekend AS Monaco will have to travel to face amateur side Union Saint-Jean at the Toulouse stadium
It's one of the biggest gaps between divisions drawn in the Round of 64 clashes happening this weekend
Union Saint-Jean currently ply their trade in Régional 1 (sixth tier)
and will be facing a side that has played and beaten Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League this season
as USJ prepare for one the biggest matches in their history
The match won't be played at Union's 3000-capacity Stade Georges Beyney due to regulation issues
yet Toulouse FC have stepped in to help out the Garonne-based side
Les Violets have made the Toulouse Stadium available for the encounter on Sunday
Many of Union's players have to balance football with full-time professional jobs
works a 45-hour week in construction and plumbing whilst also training three times a week
then head back to the club before training," Larry explained in an interview with La Depeche
Saturday brings the "hour of truth," as he admits
Balancing work and football while dealing with competition is challenging
So whilst Monaco's players will be recovering from their Ligue 1 clash with Paris Saint-Germain in the gym
Viltard and many of his teammates would have undergone a week of work
"We will approach the match like any other," said Monaco manager Adi Hütter before the game against the amateur side
"We'll do it with great respect for our opponent
considering they were knocked out by third tier side FC Rouen last season in the Round of 16
but that wasn't the case; we got knocked out
So we need to be focussed against this Union Saint-Jean team."

For Kerwins Saint-Jean, a student in Concordia’s Department of Applied Human Sciences, receiving a King Charles III Coronation Medal is a collective win
I never set out on this journey expecting awards
but rather to create meaningful change within my community,” Saint-Jean says
“This recognition isn’t just for me — it represents the efforts of those who have supported
It’s a testament to the power of community-driven impact
and it motivates me to continue advocating for lasting change.”
The medal is awarded to those who have made a significant contribution to Canada
or who have made an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to this country
Saint-Jean is being celebrated for his commitment to promoting Black entrepreneurship and empowering Black communities through a variety of initiatives
His journey as an activist began in 2020 when he co-organized a Black Lives Matter protest in Sherbrooke
Quebec that gathered more than 3,000 participants
“My activism is deeply rooted in my lived experiences as a Black man of Haitian descent
I witnessed firsthand the systemic barriers that marginalized communities face — whether in education
business or social inclusion,” Saint-Jean explains
“That Black Lives Matter protest solidified my belief that collective action has the power to drive real change
I committed myself to building spaces where Black voices are heard
Saint-Jean was also awarded the Young Nelson Mandela Award for his dedication to social justice
I firmly believe that real change starts at the grassroots level,” Saint-Jean shares
we must create spaces where people feel supported and empowered
Social justice is best promoted through active engagement — listening to community needs
fostering leadership and ensuring that opportunities are accessible to all.”
Through his time studying human relations with a concentration in community development, Saint-Jean has further tapped into his purpose as a dedicated community leader and activist.
“Concordia has played a pivotal role in shaping my leadership and activism. My studies provided me with the theoretical and practical tools to navigate and address systemic issues,” he says. “Beyond academics, my involvement with student groups and community projects has strengthened my ability to mobilize, collaborate and implement impactful programs.”
Moving forward, Kerwins aspires to continue to use his experience and skills to influence inclusive policies and drive systemic change within his community.
“My goal is to bridge the gap between grassroots initiatives and institutional decision-making, ensuring that Black and marginalized communities have a seat at the table,” Saint-Jean adds. “I also plan to further my education in public administration and leadership to strengthen my ability to create sustainable change.”
When it comes to young, Black entrepreneurs, Saint-Jean has one message: don’t wait for permission.
“You belong in every room you step into. Build, create and push forward even when the world tells you otherwise. Your success is not just for you — it paves the way for those who will come after.”

Wanting to end the year on a positive note following their tough 2-4 loss to Paris Saint-Germain
AS Monaco’s Coupe de France clash with Union Saint-Jean gives them a brilliant chance to do just that
Adi Hutter attended the pre-match press conference to discuss a host of topics
Given what a hectic schedule Hutter’s team have been enduring
as they’ve been juggling their domestic and Champions League matches
the first topic was the condition of the players and the preparation heading in
“Yesterday was a day off and today we met to prepare for the match
I have the feeling that the players are ready and motivated
despite the obvious disappointment after the defeat against Paris Saint-Germain
and it is obvious that we want to win this match
we are taking all the players who are healthy
which shows how seriously we are taking this match,” he insisted
While Hutter won’t be in the dugout for this one due to his suspension
it was great to hear his thoughts on the faith he has in assistant Christian Peintinger and his coaching staff
plus the challenge their upcoming opponents pose
it is my assistant Christian Peintinger who will lead the team tomorrow
we work together every day and he was already the one replacing me when I was sick in Germany
I have complete confidence in my technical staff,” he explained
even if we don’t have many matches at our disposal
The latest one was the one against Versailles in the previous round
is that they play in 4-4-2 in defensive phases and rather in 3-4-3 when they have the ball
We respect our opponent a lot by preparing for this match like any other,” stated the Austrian tactician
“I expect us to approach this round of 32 in the same way as a league or Champions League match
That’s what I want to see from my team
When asked his opinion on the Coupe de France and his team’s approach
Hutter spoke insightfully on its importance
which brings together nearly 6,000 or 7,000 teams in France
with eight matches before our entry into the competition
and I have a lot of respect for these teams who have to go through so many rounds to face Ligue 1 teams or simply professional teams
the Coupe de France is also one of our main objectives for the season
So I can assure you that we are approaching this match seriously,” asserted the 54-year-old
once I went out of the competition and it was against a third division club
we lost in my first game on the bench against Ulm
I remember it because I had replaced Niko Kovac
who had just won the German Cup the previous season
and so I was eliminated from the competition
and then it’s an opportunity to go and fight for a title
Our goal is clearly to do everything to get to the final
we have to start by winning tomorrow’s match
All the clubs that are entering this competition want to win it
“We are really happy that he is here
He was elected best young African player for the second year in a row
It shows that we work well with him,” Hutter told the media
“He’s an example of players in French football that we want to bring to the highest level
we are very satisfied with Lamine’s progress
even if he can obviously improve in different areas
Which is not easy when you play three competitions
because you don’t have much time to work.”
Well aware they need to respect their opponents and not underestimate them in this tricky cup encounter
expect Hutter’s Les Monegasques to be up for the challenge to secure the victory they crave to finish 2024 in fine style

Race one: Mano Faure won his first ever EMX125 moto but did it the hard way in front of his home crowd
Faure had built an eight second lead but then went down and dropped to third giving Mannini and Mantovani a shot at the win and
with four laps to go all three were nose to tail and going for it on a slick track after a heavy rain shower
But Faure showed his class to pass both riders and pull away again to take an impressive win – another big French talent is coming through
Race Two: It was Katona who was on fire after some overnight rain making conditions tricky but the Hungarian took a dominate race win
It was enough for him to stand on the podium with a third overall but it was Faure who took the overall
Faure was riding in second keeping Katona honest but then had a crash dropping him to fourth which is where he finished to secure the overall win in front of his home crowd
Mannini rode well to finish third and secure second overall – he has the red plate
McCullough spent the majority of the race without goggles and came home in twelfth
