TIMISOARA, Romania – For the second straight Beach World Series event, the United States came home with a record three medals.
2024 World champion Eliana Bommarito won a gold medal at Over 70 kg for women, Daniel Cardenas won a silver medal at 80 kg for men and Nikolas Stemmet won a bronze medal at Over 90 kg for men at the Beach World Series Timisoara in Romania on Sunday.
At the previous 2024 Beach World Series event in Saint Laurent du Var, France, the USA won three medals, a gold from Bommarito, a silver from Mariah Anderson at 50 kg for women and a bronze from Kyle Ferriter at Over 90 kg for men.
Bommarito continued her dominance of the Beach World wrestling scene, winning her fourth Beach World Series gold medal. She won her semifinal match today over Florentina Biru of Romania, 3-0, then stopped Aikaterina Pitsiava of Greece, 3-0. She won three of her four matches in less than a minute.
It is Bommarito’s fourth career Beach World Series gold medal, two from 2023 and now two in 2024. No other American has won more than one Beach World Series gold.
Cardenas went 2-0 on Saturday, then lost his final Group C match to Christos Christoforidis of Greece, 3-2. Cardenas scored enough points in the Group competition to earn a spot in the semifinals, where he beat Ramiz Hasanov of Azerbaijan, 2-1. In the championship finals, he lost to Christoforidis, 4-0 and came home with a silver medal.
Stemmet also went 2-0 on Saturday, then lost his final Group C match to fellow American Gabe Rangel by pin. Stemmet scored enough points to advance to the semifinals, where he lost to Mamuka Kordzaia of Georgia, 3-0. In the bronze-medal match, he beat Omar Sarem of Syria, 3-2.
Justin Benjamin, who won a Beach World Series event in Acapulco, Mexico earlier this year, placed fifth at 70 kg, finishing with a 3-1 record. He advanced to the elimination rounds, but was defeated in the quarterfinals.
Team USA placed third in the men’s division with 45 points, behind team champion Turkey with 54 points and runner-up Azerbaijan with 52 points.
Although Bommarito was the only U.S. entry, the USA team was fourth in the women’s standings, which was won by Ukraine.

Text description provided by the architects. Listening to the approach of L’Artisan des Pains Oubliés, the parallel seems evident. The way we approach our work, wether it is to make bread or developing an architecture project, have very similar guidelines :
Taking advantage from the resources, the craftsmanship and revealing it in the work.
© Lorenzo ZandriIn the raw ground floor of a new building, their wish of having an authentic bakery without unnecessary actions wasn’t easy. This is why our discussion firstly focussed on materials, which from our point of view need to be crafted by the hands and tools of the workers.
© Lorenzo ZandriThe reflexion has rapidly turned around three elements: raw earth plaster, terra cotta and wood.
© Lorenzo ZandriThe use of bio-based materials encourages architects and craftsmen to immerse themselves in skills that have been forgotten and erased by the modern era. Standardisation, rentability and the velocity of the process takes us away from traditional and durable techniques. The idea is not to reinvent everything but to take advantage of what we know is efficient and combine it with the contemporary aesthetic codes.
AxonometryRegarding the layout of spaces, the reflexion has been oriented in a radical simple lecture of the different parts of the program. On the foreground, an accessible public foreground with the retail and lunch, and a background exposing the various tools of the baker, organized around a central masterpiece oven, visual landmark of the bakery.

Nice
and get ready to soak up the sun in the French Riviera's glamorous beating heart
Nice’s beaches are the French Riviera at its absolute best
And they’re not a one-trip pony either; on our list we’ve included options for all budgets
from nearby classics to hidden coves and réserves.
You’ll have heard of some of them, but for summer 2024 there’s a newcomer on our list – Bocca Mar, a fabulous little beach joined to a new restaurant from last year, picked by local writer Chloe Braithwaite. Generally speaking, you want to visit one of these gems between April and October when things are hot. Ready? Us too. Here are the best beaches in Nice.
RECOMMENDED:📍 The best things to do in Nice🍴 The best restaurants in Nice🛍️ The best shops in Nice🏘️ The best Airbnbs in Nice
tiny La Réserve is a lesser-known public beach tucked away to the east of Nice town in the port area
Why go? Just strolling distance from the centre of Nice
La Réserve may get crowded thanks to its diminutive dimensions
but its seclusion from the main stretch lends it a relaxed
The famed diving boards that crazed local teens have long leapt from have been renovated as part of a restaurant serving great food with views to match
The latest addition to Nice’s famous stretch of peddles
Bocca Mar is the beach-front sibling of the rooftop restaurant Oasis in Nice’s old town.
Bocca Mar is the cool younger sister everyone wants to be seen with
with a resident DJ playing from 8pm until 2am
the beach bar doubles as a seaside nightclub
then dip low on the dancefloor—this spot has it all
this private beach at the foot of the Old Town is the largest in the French Riviera and has five-star amenities to match
Why go? You have to go glam at least once on each visit to the Côte d’Azur
and there are few better places than the Plage Beau Rivage
Take a table at the gourmet restaurant not 30 feet from the shore
sup a sundowner at the luxe lounge bar or just stretch out on a striped lounger for a well-earned snooze.
What is it? Nice’s oldest private beach and former opera house pavilion have been serving locals and vacationers alike since 1889 under the watchful eye of the Maiffret family
Why go? One hundred and twenty-seven years of dedicated service has allowed the Maiffrets to hone their skills to provide some of the best hospitality in Nice
Whether you ‘need’ a massage in your sun lounger or a new swimming costume from their collection
What is it? A short drive from Nice centre
but well worth the effort for a spot of seclusion
calm waters and some of the best swimming on the French Riviera
Why go? The public beach has excellent amenities
loads of water sports to try your hand at in the Club Nautique from scuba to sailing
and tranquillity in the elegant Papaya Beach and ramshackle tasty restaurant in Anjuna Bay
The public beach is braced at each end by private beach clubs
What is it? Another family-run affair along the Promenade des Anglais dating back a century
it’s like stepping into an idyll from the French Riviera’s golden age
A wooden platform with steps into the sea saves pebble-worn feet
a saltwater pool with a lifeguard keeps the kids entertained
80 private cabins with hot showers maintain your modesty
and Le Coin Lounge serves fresh Niçois dishes and an array of fabulous local wines
What is it? The easternmost private beach along the Baie des Anges
Castel is nestled under the headland and chateau and feels far removed from Nice’s throbbing crowds.
Why go? Castel offers awesome facilities for a price and rolls friendly service into the mix – not something Nice establishments are famed for
the restaurant serves fantastic Niçois food and ice-cold Provençal rosé to your table or lounger
and the Med is only a pebble’s throw away
What is it? A private beach open year-round that is only steps away from some of Nice’s best hotels like the Negresco and Palais de la Méditeérranée on the Promenade des Anglais
Why go? Often referred to as gastro plage, thanks to its excellent restaurant
the beach and restaurant are a boon for anyone willing to pay for entry
The kids will love the beach swimming pool
trampoline and well-curated watersports activities
Villefranche plage is a 15-minute two-euro bus ride away and offers that rarest of things on the French Riviera: sand
Why go? Alongside the pebble-free sunbathing
public Villefranche is a gem in the classic beachy sense
glistening warm waters and a range of restaurants and ice cream stalls to gorge on
easygoing Carras at the western end of the Promenade des Anglais offers easy access and lifeguards so anyone with a disability can get in the water
Why go? Aside from disability-friendly amenities
Carras is also Nice’s only pet-friendly plage so expect drenched mutts and the odd rogue Frisbee
It’s also the only beach where you can rent jet skis or
where you can borrow free books and magazines in multiple languages
What is it? Named after the pebbles that make up Nice’s beaches, Le Galet is a high-end new offering opposite Albert-ler Gardens with as much onus on food and drinks as its beachy setting
Why go? Rather obscurely promising ‘the softest pebbles of the Côte d’Azur’
chic is Le Galet’s byword with a focus on Italian design
fresh food (the poke bowl is to die for) and social events (aka parties)
Very en vogue with Nice’s in-crowd
it’s also one of the best places to see the February carnival march past
What is it? The Plage des Flots Bleus in St Laurent du Var near Nice airport is the ultimate all-in-one beach day destination.
Why go? At one end sits the Cap 3000 shopping mall with 150+ shops
And in between is a brace of restaurants, handiplage access for less able beachgoers
beach clubs and early in the summer season before the tides wash it away… sand
What is it? Keep wandering past the port and La Réserve beach
you will spot this tiny slice of rocks and pebbles – sometimes heaving with locals
offers showers to wash away that crystal clear salt water and a single restaurant that may be closed
drape your towel over one of the big rocks (trust us
they are comfier than the pebbles) and settle in for some serious sunning
What is it? Plonked almost in the middle of the Baie des Anges along a stretch that affords more room than most
Le Voilier is a heady mix of private and public beaches
Why go? Head to the gently sloping public beach for easy access to the sea
a year-round restaurant and everything from cheap towels to three-person day beds to lounge the day away

bringing rare hail to the French Riviera - turning several towns and beaches white.
Picturesque towns and cities along the coastline such as Nice

temperatures in Nice and the surrounding area were 4.4C
the lowest in all of France at that time.

SAINT-LAURENT-DU-VAR, France – It was a historic day for USA Wrestling’s Beach wrestling program on Saturday on Cousteau Beach in this French Riviera town.
For the first time since the creation of the Beach World Series in 2019, the United States took home three medals from the same Beach World Series event. Team USA scored a gold medal, a silver medal and a bronze medal at Beach World Series Saint-Laurent-du-Var.
2023 World champion Eliana Bommarito (Brighton, Mich. (Michigan Revolution WC) captured the gold medal at Over 70 kg, dominating all five matches, including a 44 second pin in the finals over Liudmyla Pavlovets Tychyna of Ukraine.
This was Bommarito’s third career Beach World Series gold medal, to go with 2023 golds in Mugla, Turkey and Constanta, Romania. No other U.S. Senior Beach wrestler has won more than one Beach World Series medal.
Bommarito scored three straight takedowns in the semifinals to defeat Stefania Zacheila of Greece, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. Earlier on Saturday morning, she won her final Group match over Marine Le Cour Grandmaison of France, giving her a 3-0 record to win Group B and advance to the semifinals.
Mariah Anderson (Houston, Texas/Air Force RTC) won a silver medal at 50 kg. She was defeated in the finals by Viktoriia Slobodeniuk of Ukraine, 2-0. Slobodeniuk scored a takedown and a step out for the win. Anderson had lost to Slobodeniuk, 5-2 in the first Group match, then won three straight times to earn the rematch in the finals.
Anderson won her first career medal at the Beach World Series. She is just the fifth U.S. Senior woman to come home with a World Series medal, joining Bommarito, Laura White, Kristal Betanzo and Diana Betanzo with World Series podium finishes.
Anderson earned her spot in the finals with a clutch 2-1 win over Yulia Zasulska of Ukraine in the semifinals. Anderson fell behind 1-0 on a takedown, but tied it up at 1-1 with a takedown of her own in the final minute of the match. As time ran down, Anderson clinched the victory with a step out point.
Earlier in the day, Anderson won her final Group match, stopping Claudia Cabrera of Argentina, 3-0, to place second in Group A and advance to the semifinals.
Kyle Ferriter (Colorado Springs, Colo.) emerged with bronze medal at Over 90 kg, his first career Beach World Series medal. He becomes only the sixth U.S. man to claim a Beach World Series medal, along with Justin Benjamin, Tim Box, Reece Humphrey, Michael Peters and Tyson Beauperthuy.
Ferriter finished with a 2-2 record in a five-athlete round robin. On Saturday, he won his morning match with a 3-0 win over Alessio Vandi of Italy in just 13 seconds. His final match was a 3-0 loss to Vazha Daiauri of Ukraine, who captured the silver medal.
Justin Benjamin (70 kg) and Jamal Morris (90 kg) dropped their final Group matches on Saturday morning and did not advance to the semifinals round. Morris finished sixth and Benjamin was eighth. Mitch Brown, who lost a knockout match on Friday, was ninth at 70 kg.
“That’s the first time we have had three medalists, and that’s another record. We had another gold medal, the fourth consecutive event we have had a gold medalist. We also had a second finalist. Our women’s team placed second, another record in itself. Our men’s team placed fifth, which is respectable as well,” said U.S. coach Tim Box.

Virtually every profession has a patron saint (1)
because that was going to be my intro into this map
showing the distribution of towns and cities in Europe whose name starts with Saint (or the equivalent in the local languages)
The topography of saintliness varies greatly throughout Europe
National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency by Polish infographic producers Biqdata
shows 20,808 such places across the continent
now a beacon of ‘laïcité’ – the French version of secularism – in previous centuries prided itself on being ‘la fille ainée de l’église’ (the oldest daughter of the church)
And its Christian heritage still shows in the sheer number of saintly place-names
from Saint-Denis and Saint-Cloud near Paris to Saint-Brieuc in Brittany and Saint-Laurent-du-Var in the Provence
No less than 43% of the European total of ‘Saint(e)’ names occurs in France
northeast and southwest seem to have been less touched by holy topography
With 4,444 ‘San’ or ‘Santa’ topographies
But here the regional distribution is more skewed than in France
or any other country for that matter: most of Spain is actually fairly saint-name-free
except for a smaller concentration in northeast Catalonia
and a massive communion of saintly red dots in Galicia
That northwest corner of Spain is also home to Santiago de Compostela
a destination for pilgrims from all over Europe from the early medieval period onward
Which may explain the extraordinary concentration of saintly place names in that region
With 2,638 cities and towns named after saints
Italy ranks third on the list (12.7% of the European total)
The dots are distributed fairly evenly across the country
and lower concentrations in Sicily and the south of the Italian mainland
Its ‘holy’ place-names are mainly coastal and northern
Portugal is just a few dozen place-names ahead of Greece
where a central zone across the mainland and the island of Crete seem responsible for most saintly topographies
Belgium and Hungary are ex aequo at 464 place-names (2.2%)
with concentrations in the centre and west of those countries
Things get un-holy pretty quickly from here on down
Only five more countries have more than 100 place names with a saintly prefix
The UK has a notable concentration in Cornwall
and a smattering across the south and in Wales
Germany’s ‘Sankt’ cities and towns are few and far between in any part of the country
Albania’s relatively high place in the ranking on the map seems an extension of Greece’s high score
where the coastal convergence of dots could as well be a continuation of the Italian zone of high density
And Russia’s relatively high score looks pretty thin on the ground on the map
Place-names starting with the ‘Saint’ prefix (or local equivalent) are surprisingly rare
especially in traditionally Catholic countries like the Czech Republic (70)
And whether or not it has to do with the effects of the Reformation or reflects one of the causes of it
especially northern countries seem to lack towns or cities named after saints
Sweden and Denmark only have four between them – only one less than tiny (and Muslim-majority) Kosovo
Map found here at Biqdata via Simon Kuestenmacher.

(1) Some of our favourite patron saints and their causes:
Anthony of Padua (those seeking lost persons or items)
Barbara (service personnel of the Russian Strategic Rocket Forces)
chimneysweeps and anyone working at great heights)
who is celebrated by some as the patron saint of the Internet
is sometimes also accorded patronage over cartography because of the Jerusalem-centred T-O map of the world he produced
which remained influential for centuries to come
Isidore has been officially confirmed in neither capacity by the Vatican

A list containing some of France’s most-polluted beaches has been unveiled to help summer visitors decide where to bathe
it shows the vast majority of French beaches are ranked as ‘excellent’
Its study looked at more than 1,800 beaches whose water quality is regularly checked by regional health agencies in France
The media organisation has provided a searchable, interactive map (in French and behind a paywall) that allows you to see beaches near you or check the quality of those you may visit on holiday
Visitors are advised to check for reports on the quality of the water before diving in
A European directive requires bathing water to be checked and the result of these analyses enables authorities to classify beaches into four grades based on their water quality
and they are based on the microbiological analysis results for the current year and the three previous ones
eight beaches in Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur are primarily affected by poor (‘insufficient’) quality water
These notably include beaches in Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer
On June 21, swimming at Gravette beach, Antibes, was suspended due to high levels of enterococcus bacteria in the water
have been closed since March and will remain so throughout the summer
beaches of excellent quality water in the area include those in the communes of Grimaud
The beaches in these regions tend to be of high quality
while most of the beaches in Corsica are also classified as ‘excellent’
Read also: Riptides on French coast: How to avoid and what to do if caught
suffers from higher-than-ideal levels of pollution
beaches a few kilometres away in Ile d'Oléron and Ile d'Aix are much better
Soorts-Hossegor; and Anglet in the Pays Basque
all of which have a number of beaches with ‘excellent’ water quality
the beaches of Agon-Coutainville and Coudeville-sur-Mer have ‘insufficient’ water quality
which have many sites with ‘excellent’ water quality
Hauts-de-France has fewer swimming spots compared to other regions
and while none of them are ranked as of ‘insufficient’ quality
the proportion of beaches of ‘excellent’ quality is low
They tend to be rated ‘good’ or ‘sufficient’
and Saint-Brieuc are of ‘insufficient’ quality
The beach at Saint-Michel-en-Grève even saw the first suspected case of death caused by green algae, in 1989, when hydrogen sulphide, a toxic gas emitted by decomposing algae, is thought to have caused the death of a 27-year-old jogger
The beach at Saint-Brieuc is also seeing problems linked to invasive green algae
and Plounéour-Brignogan-Plages have around a dozen beaches that are deemed to be of ‘excellent’ quality
The beaches at Pornic and Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez fare better than those at Pouliguen and Saint-Nazaire
as the latter two are rated of ‘insufficient’ quality in the Le Figaro list
These have been ranked France’s most environmentally friendly beaches

An 3.7 magnitude earthquake hit the south-east of France on Monday (December 16) night
which was felt by some residents of the area.
was located around 30 km off the coast of Nice at a depth of 2km below sea level.
This is very shallow for an earthquake and contributed to how many people felt it despite the distance from the coast and relatively low intensity
The earthquake was felt by residents across towns in the Alpes-Maritimes department
as well as in Montauroux and Draguignan (Var) and Bordighera (across the Italian border).
the whole family felt vibrations,” said one resident of Saint-Laurent-du-Var.
“I am still in shock, the whole house shook. Fortunately the children were in bed,” said another from Carros, as reported by local media Nice Matin.
A more powerful earthquake was recorded in the area earlier this year.

No damage was recorded from the quake last night
Local firefighters confirmed they did not receive any callouts as a result of the tremors.
It follows a rare 3.6 magnitude earthquake in Normandy on Sunday
Similarly to the earthquake in the south-east yesterday evening
the epicentre of the earthquake was shallow
despite the low strength of the earthquake
it was felt by residents in the local area
No damage or injuries were caused by the Normandy earthquake
Earthquakes are common in mainland France but are rarely felt due to their low strength and deep epicentres.
