See the inside of a rodent’s eye like never before
alongside other commended images from the Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition
By Gege Li
THIS dazzling compilation of life under the microscope showcases some of the best photos entered into 2023’s Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition
Scooping the top prize is a picture of a rat’s optic nerve head (pictured above)
which is where all the retinal nerve fibres that travel to the brain pass through before forming the optic nerve
The image is a powerful snapshot of the extreme intricacy of the eye’s retina
both of whom are at the Lions Eye Institute in Western Australia
Qambari’s research focuses on detecting and finding treatments for diabetic retinopathy, in which high blood sugar levels cause blood vessels in the back of the eye to swell and leak, resulting in blurry vision and, sometimes, blindness.
Dr. Grigorii Timin & Dr. Michel Milinkovitch
He said he entered the contest to showcase how complex this vascular network is. Locating the microscopic vessels was a “technically demanding challenge”, he added.
Another rodent features in the photo above – of a mouse embryo – taken by Grigorii Timin and Michel Milinkovitch at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. Achieving seventh place, the picture was captured using a technique called light sheet fluorescence microscopy.
Pictured above, winning an Image of Distinction award, is Sébastien Malo’s close-up of a crab spider (Thomisus onustus), the females of which can change colour between yellow, pink and white to blend in seamlessly with the flowers on which they both stalk prey and hide from predators.

Lyon-Saint Exupéry handled more than ten million passengers for the first time in 2017 after increasing its network with ten new routes and seven new destinations
the airport also opened its 70,000 sq m Terminal 1B hall to help accommodate further growth
head of route development and marketing at Aéroports de Lyon
explains more about the success achieved in 2017 and its priorities for the rest of the year
Lyon-Saint Exupéry handled more than ten million passengers in 2017
What was the main reason behind the growth
Continued confidence by our airline partners through their increased offer in LYS
More than a dozen routes have been successfully launched and many routes have been strengthened
we are working to develop the accessibility to expand the LYS airport’s catchment area from 12 million inhabitants within two hours
The connections by bus and TGV (28 and 27 destinations) serve the territory towards LYS
We have launched a large plan to improve operational efficiency in order to offer the best service to airlines
but also to our customers which are the passengers
The economic sector of our region is very strong
this is evident in the performance of our results
https://infogram.com/lys-departure-seats-1h0r6r8k8dol4ek
What are your most notable recent new routes
The most notable recent new routes are Varsovia
Helsinki and Pointe-à-Pitre to name a few
The domestic air network departing from LYS is among the busiest in France
tourism partners and others so these discussions to bear fruit
Excellent knowledge of our territory and the deployment of powerful communication tools also contribute
What routes are currently best performing for you
It is also encouraging to see Turkey and North Africa returning after some challenging years
Are there any particular geographies you are targeting
The US and China are key long-haul targets
not only for the airport but our regional partners too
LYS-NYC is the first unserved European city in terms of passengers
with more than 73,000 travelling one-way in 2017
How will the new Terminal 1 help you to achieve your ambitions
Are any other infrastructure investments planned
Terminal 1 will allow LYS to provide an improved customer experience and additional passenger capacity
It is also a guarantee of economic performance for airlines thanks to the centralisation of operations in LYS that was not possible before the opening of the terminal
Our future investments will be dedicated to developing our airport services
such as a multi-storey car park in front of the new Terminal 1
We will ensure that the attrition rate is kept as low as possible and maintain what we have already achieved

People volunteering to leave France will spend their last days in the country at a new center opened in September near Toulouse
where they receive administrative and financial support
By Philippe Gagnebet (Toulouse (France)
The Saint-Lys 'return preparation' center CAPTURE D’ÉCRAN GOOGLE MAPS For 30-year-old Imazaeva
her husband and their four children aged between one and six
their days spent at the Saint-Lys return preparation center
"We applied for protection in three European countries
and didn't receive it in any of them," said this young Chechen (who did not wish to give her full name)
"All this change and instability is having a negative impact on the children
so we've decided to go back home," she concluded bitterly
Imazaeva's family has been living in Saint-Lys since the beginning of October
when they volunteered to leave France and take advantage of the return preparation scheme
which will house them for a maximum of four months
It became the latest to open its doors in early September
when it took up residence in a 3,000-square-meter former nursing home
Managed by Adoma – a national operator in the field of accommodation and support for asylum seekers – it will primarily house and support families and "anyone at the end of the line," according to Michel Kessouari

ExpandThe Vietnamese restaurant Pho Ly recently launched in downtown St
a steaming bowl of soup signifies a remedy to what ails you
Comforting bowls of pho are the specialty dish at Pho Ly
Pho is a traditional Vietnamese noodle and broth soup that can have a variety of meats
The name Pho Ly comes from brothers Minh Ly and Hai Ly
who own the restaurant along with Minh’s wife
I would preface this review by saying that I have always had an affinity for pho, but am very particular about it. For the past several years, I have traveled to a Hoffman Estates spot at least once per month to get my pho fix. From now on, one of my favorite pho destinations will be in downtown St. Charles
My date and I were welcomed with quick and friendly service from staff
The restaurant is full of natural light and the soothing aroma of broth
We marveled at the many steaming bowls traveling from the kitchen to tables
The Vietnamese egg rolls are prepared with ground pork
We started with an order of egg rolls and spring rolls
Quite different from the Chinese egg roll served with sweet and spicy sauces
Pho Ly’s traditional Vietnamese egg rolls are filled with ground pork
all wrapped in a sticky Vietnamese rice paper called bánh tráng
both rolls were packed with a variety of textures
The fried egg rolls were heavier and piping hot
The shrimp were perfectly cooked in the spring rolls
The spring roll’s shrimp were perfectly cooked
the sprouts and lettuce providing a snap to each bite
and the dipping sauce brought a rich savory flavor
we shared a bowl of pho prepared with rare steak
The Bahn Mi is a traditional Vietnamese sandwich with marinated pork served on a crispy baguette and topped with pickled carrots
with a nice balance of crunch and tang from the pickled veggies
The silky broth had a gentle umami flavor that builds with each spoonful
with sriracha and hoisin condiments popular add-ons
jalapeño and lime are served on the side to flavor pho to everyone’s own liking
Sriracha and hoisin sauce are also popular pho add-ons
Whether you are feeling under the weather or just in the mood for some comfort food
a bowl of pho from Pho Ly will warm the soul
The owners have made great use of their space
modern environment that’s home to elevated Vietnamese cuisine

A Montreal apartment decked out in Quebec flags with the fleur-de-lys.
Will PrinceContributing WriterJun 28, 2023, 7:55 PMJun 24, 2023, 10:00 AMWhen St-Jean Baptiste Day rolls around
and seeds itself in every festive decoration
But as much as it has become intertwined with Gallic identity
the emblem's roots transcend French connection
The fleur-de-lys has been used to mark kings and prisoners
and its origins can be traced all the way back to the pre-Roman Bronze Age

Before adorning the Quebec flag, known as the "Fleurdelisé," the symbolic flower graced the artwork of diverse cultures spanning thousands of years
Its earliest known depictions date back to 14th-century B.C.E
Its influence spread across civilizations, from Egypt and Greece to India and Japan

Incidents involving people breaking into private gardens or public facilities and using swimming pools without permission appear to be growing
especially in copropriétés in the south of France
This trend of swimming pool ‘squatting’ caught one couple in Villeneuve-lez-Avignon (Gard) by surprise when they returned home one night to find a young couple in their pool, Le Figaro reports.
in the south west of Toulouse (Haute-Garonne)
was also recently broken into by a group of young people
“The squatters come in the evening when we have left
[the squatters] leave all sorts of rubbish,” said a salesperson at swimming pool business Piscines Détente
These are display pools for our customers; we can’t leave them empty or dirty
We are also not going to watch over them all night with a gun,”
a platform through which residents can report all sorts of disturbances
has received 200 complaints about pool ‘squatting’ over the past three months
we were at 180 [complaints] for the same period,” the service stated
the police are contacted so that they can intervene as soon as possible,” said the mairie
responsibilities linked to security fall to the owners and the syndic first
principally in terms of controlling access to shared spaces.”
The Guide-piscine.fr website, which offers advice to people hoping to install a pool
said that there are “10 to 15 calls to police each day in the summer concerning swimming pool squatting
“When residents realise that their pool is being used
But the authorities’ power is essentially quite limited.”
The law states that authorities may only intervene when individuals are “hindering the residents’ access and movement,” “preventing security systems from working properly” or “disturbing the peace of the environs”
and only the first two are punishable offences
the squatters can easily claim that they have been invited to use the facilities by another resident
swimming pool ‘squatting’ can result in violent confrontations
the couple using the pool drew a knife on the property owners when they arrived
and police later found possessions from the house in their car
If you realise that someone is using your pool or your copropriété’s pool without permission
the legal considerations mentioned above mean that the police will not always come out to the scene if you call them
they will definitely come in the case of a ‘home invasion’ (violation de domicile)
so if the squatters have caused any damage or are clearly trespassing
the squatters risk a €15,000 fine and up to a year in prison
There are also several methods you can use to prevent people from using your swimming pool without your consent
These include attaching an alarm to the pool and installing a cover which can be locked shut
your syndic could decide to employ a pool guard
or perhaps a system through which each resident is given a bracelet with the number of their apartment
There are more than three million private swimming pools in France
making it the second biggest market in the world behind the US
the number of pools being constructed rose by 30%

The departments in which swimming pools are most common are Var and Vaucluse
where 15% of properties come with a pool set into the ground
the garden features are also becoming more popular in the northern half of the country
“Today, in contrast to what you might think, we build more swimming pools in the centre of France than in the south. The trend has really been reversed,” Jean-Louis Desjoyaux of Piscines Desjoyaux told Franceinfo
The public desire for a private pool has been fuelled by the Covid lockdowns and by the hotter summers brought by climate change
while these facilities help humans to cope with the effects of global warming
they do not help to prevent its progression
A 20m2 pool heated by a pump creates 250kg of CO2 each year
the same as a return flight between Paris and Marseille
The rise in the number of private pools also adds strain to water resources
increasing a household’s consumption by 10-15%

Apostolic Administrator Charles Scicluna consecrated the first altar during his bishopric at the new St Monica Convent chapel
the vigil of the first Sunday after Christmas
the Liturgy of the Feast of the Holy Family
The central sculpture beneath the altar depicts the Cana wedding
to which Jesus and his mother had been invited
Our Lady’s posture in the sculpture indicates her gentle leading of the baffled couple towards Jesus
while the servant is just starting to pour the water that will change into wine
Mgr Scicluna celebrates Mass at the new altar
The scene spells out the spirit of the foundress of these Sisters
who constantly encouraged her followers to accompany and pray for the people who walk their way and to lead them to Christ
One cannot miss the dominating presence of feminine figures in the new chapel
The right front window shines out the colourful painting of the Madonna and Child
the left front window portrays the ecstatic scene of St Monica with her son
while beneath the ambone is a sculpture of the three women who went to seek the body of Jesus in the tomb
only to find a young man proclaiming the resurrection of Christ
The words of this young man to the women in the empty tomb express the mission of these Sisters: “But go
‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him
just as He told you.’” (Mark 16:7)
the Sisters’ favourite place in the convent
there is a constant reminder of another wedding to come
they see five oil lamp sculptures to the left of the holy tabernacle
reminding them of the parable of the 10 virgins: “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like 10 virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the Bridegroom.” (Matthew 25:1)

People's National Party candidate for St Thomas Eastern
on Monday broke ground for the rehabilitation of the Lyssons Beach in St Thomas
The $30 million contract falls under the Government's efforts to improve public access to the beaches in the country
According to Ferguson: " One of the things that the Government has been focusing on
we develop our beach fronts and create new attractions for our tourism and also our locals
and I'm extremely pleased to be here for this exercise and setting the tone for work to begin that will create opportunities for our locals in terms of work
create opportunities for greater entertainment and also greater attractions for
Ferguson expressed that the parish is well known for its beach fronts and made mention of one of its finest attractions
"Once we continue to develop our beach fronts and continue the work that is going on now in the ministry
then I believe that the tourism product in St Thomas
will be a unique product because of the significant number of heritage sites that we have
in addition to our history of Paul Bogle," he said
Regional Manager at the Tourism Product Development Company
shed some light on the scope of work to be done at the beach
as well as the general upgrading of the beach area to include gazebos and additional seating
A new driveway will be constructed and a guard house will be put at the entrance
and we're also looking into upgrading the mini-football and volley ball field," she said
the beach will be taken over by Eastern Attractions
which will be responsible for its maintenance thereafter
the company who will be carrying out the renovations told The Gleaner that they look forward to working with the people of the constituency
as they expect to employ more than 30 locals while they try to complete the work in the shortest possible time

following the signing of contracts valued at some $58 million
under the Tourism Enhancement Fund’s (TEF) National Beach Development Programme
hosted at the Ministry’s offices in Kingston on January 20
said this initiative is concrete demonstration of how the tourism industry can have positive impact on ordinary citizens
Under the first phase of a $250 million national project
15 beaches – at least one in each parish – will be transformed into a quality recreational space for residents and visitors alike
Lyssons Beach will be upgraded at a cost of $30.5 million and Marking Stone at a cost of $28.1 million
Among the other beaches under consideration for upgrade in the first phase of the project are: Salem Beach in St
“This underscores once again that tourism is not an enclave sector that benefits only large investors
resorts and attraction owners and the workers in the industry
but should and must have direct and positive impact on the lives of citizens across Jamaica,” Dr
the Ministry handed over the Burwood Beach
McNeill said the Ministry is ensuring that Jamaicans throughout the island have free access to some of the best beaches equipped with world class beach facilities
He said the Ministry will continue to work with the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) and the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA)
to identify and secure leases for additional beaches
