MITRE started a solar car race for the Northside Independent School District 25 years ago
20,000 students have crossed the finish line
When Northside Independent School District’s (NISD) fourth-
and sixth-grade drivers whip aside their cardboard
The model-sized race cars speed along fixed lines of monofilament fishing line
streaking from one set of teammates to the other
their months of work coming down to the finish
Parents and other fans watching from the Gustafson Stadium in San Antonio
appear just about as thrilled as the young racers
The race all began when Bobby Blount, now manager of MITRE’s Austin iHub
went to NISD in 1996 with an idea: Give students an exciting experience to learn science
it was kids who came up with the idea of solar race cars,” says Blount
Then we heard there was a school in Houston being mentored by NASA that we could race
It just grew from there—we’ve now grown to 80 schools participating.”
Blount and MITRE employees have been an integral part of NISD’s Solar Race Day ever since
the United States Air Force has joined in as a sponsor of the event
“The Air Force is committed to supporting STEM all the way from kindergarten through 12th grade,” says Matt Aguirre
“Our goal here is to introduce kids to the design lifecycle
Get them used to the idea that we increment over time
Failure is OK… we learn and improve when we do that.”
“This experience has allowed the kids to be open-minded and bring their skills
bring their talent… I just can’t wait to see the future and what it brings.”
my daughter participated in the solar car races,” says Kathy Jimenez
“She had so much fun building [the car] at Monroe May Elementary School
We were really happy and surprised when she won first place
Now I’m in my second year as a solar car coach.”
Also attending the 25th anniversary of the NISD Solar Race were MITRE employees who have been long-time supporters
He has been supporting the race since 2005
we’re running four tracks concurrently of eight cars per track
Back then we had one track of eight and we were done by noon
This is a really good partnership to help kids get ready for their future—for most
this is probably their first effort with a group and teamwork related to engineering.”
Nationwide, MITRE has a long history of community involvement
And while the NISD Solar Car Race is MITRE San Antonio’s longest running project
How students ultimately make use of this STEM experience is still far ahead in their futures
But there’s little doubt they enjoy the teamwork
“I’m glad that we were able to build a solar car in eight-to-ten weeks...
Of course, seeing a race beats reading about it every time. Check out the video of the 25th Anniversary NISD Solar Car Race Day. You can also view KC Callicotte's tribute to MITRE’s Bobby Blount about three minutes into her valedictory speech.
New Norfolk’s Mitre 10 store will open under new ownership today (Tuesday)
After guiding and growing the business since 1988
Ray and Lesley Williams have sold their landmark Charles St hardware business
they took a risk on a failing hardware store in High St and molded it into a successful and award-winning business
Their venture has had links to Mitre 10 from day one
the Williams’ initially traded as New Norfolk Village Hardware before switching to True Value Hardware
That name became so ingrained that much like many people still talk about going to “Purity” when referring to Woolworths
some still refer to meeting their hardware needs at True Value
The original shop at 41 High St was named Australia’s best True Value store in Australia on several occasions and its flagship status saw several national television campaigns filmed on the premises and visits by the cast of The Block TV series
There were several more awards when the Mitre 10 Handy branding was adopted
and several years as the best in the state
In 2015 the Williams family took another leap of faith and built the large new store that stretches the width of a whole block from Charles St to Stephen St
the new store opened in March 2016 and has just entered its 10th year of successful operation
The new location has also won multiple awards
Looking back on the history of the business
Mr Williams said he was proud to have grown from the original two staff members to now employing 30
The family has given many young workers their start and watched with pride as they have developed their careers
with some staying with the firm and others going on to new opportunities
The couple has also played a central role in community life
sponsoring and supporting countless organisations and clubs
and serving voluntarily on the former chamber of commerce board
Mrs Williams was a member of the Corumbene nursing home board of management and Mr Williams was elected to the Derwent Valley Council
They also served at the highest levels within Mitre 10 when it operated as a cooperative
In handing the hardware store’s keys to new owners last night
staff and customers for their support over the last 37 years
The family will continue to own and operate Williams Outdoors
shooting and outdoor goods business they established in 2017 in the original hardware store premises at 41 High St
grown out of their New Norfolk Gunshop venture which opened in 1999
The new owners of Mitre 10 in New Norfolk are Adam Henley and Matt Haas
who look forward to welcoming all old and new customers to the Charles St premises from today
where it will be very much business as usual
Mitre 10 at New Norfolk is open from 7.30am-5.30pm on weekdays and 9am-4pm on weekends
See more Derwent Valley and Central Highlands news online and read our print edition every second Friday
Congratulations to you Ray & Lesley Williams on a job well done
You have both worked tirelessly to create this very successful business which has provided great products and services as well as employment opportunities to the people of New Norfolk and beyond
Best wishes to the new owners Matt and Adam
I have every confidence the business will continue to thrive

Louis have announced two more parish closings after a Vatican court rejected appeals from parishioners to keep them open
Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski’s May 2023 decrees were upheld by the court to close St
Francis of Assisi parish in Franklin County and St
Catherine of Alexandria was merged with St
Joseph parish in Farmington last August under the Archdiocese’s “All Things New” initiative
another decree was upheld by a Vatican court to close St
Roch was merged with Christ the King parish last August
a Vatican court did not find reason to combine St
Angela Merici parish in Florissant with St
All three parishes will remain under the pastoral guidance of Fr
There also was no just cause found to combine St
Martin of Tours will stay as its own parish
Both parishes will remain under the pastoral guidance of Fr
The list below are the remaining parishes that have an outstanding appeal:
It’s worth exploring the different styles of rosé
from the already popular dry Provence to sweeter British pinots
In spite of the massive popularity of rosé
which enjoyed an even bigger boost this sunny spring
there’s still a tendency to think of it as a single type of wine
While it’s not as varied as red or white wines
there are still marked differences in styles
the amount of skin contact and the level of sweetness
The Guardian’s journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more.
The most popular style is still the whisper-pink
which often contains a small amount of white wine (usually vermentino
Wines that contain a significant proportion of cinsault have a particularly appealing
You generally find darker rosés in Spain and Latin America
and they’re generally riper and fruitier – the kind of rosé to drink with the big flavours of a barbecue
Countries that produce sparkling wine often have some excess pinot to turn into rosé (running off the first pressings
because rosé also helps to concentrate the reds)
I’ve also spotted quite a few Italian rosés this year, including the Co-op’s Sensi Tua Rosa Toscana Rosato 2019 (£8
but are often a pound or two cheaper than rosés from Provence
The other big variable, as you’ll no doubt have noticed, is price. Although there are cheap rosés (I wrote about eight of them a few weeks back)
seems significantly less price-sensitive than other categories
for a wine that is generally made without oak and doesn’t have to be aged
given that it’s a vin de France and made from unglamorous carignan
it would probably be a couple of quid cheaper if didn’t carry her name
It’s almost worth throwing a Neighbours party to celebrate
We made remarkably short work of this at a recent picnic
A totally delicious Provence rosé that tastes of freshly picked raspberries and wild strawberries

and very much in the pale dry Provence style
though this is made in Faugères in the Languedoc

this Corsican rosé is one of my favourites this summer - perfect for seafood and raw fish dishes such as tartare and carpaccio

MITRE’s commitment to fostering strategic relationships with academic partners enables us to facilitate the innovation mindset on college campuses
We engage partners across the nation to help develop a diverse pipeline of cyber experts to solve problems for a safer world
Our collaboration with the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) embodies that mission.
the school has a reputation as one of the nation’s top cybersecurity academic institutions
It’s well-matched to our strategic initiative to generate new opportunities through engagement with academia and industry
The top-notch research consortium UTSA National Security Collaboration Center is located there
The city has been dubbed “Cyber City USA,” and is a nationally known concentration of cybersecurity company headquarters
It’s also home to a vibrant MITRE site—one that has been contributing to the San Antonio cyber ecosystem for decades
says the partnership has already had a significant impact on both organizations and the community
“We’ve managed to merge MITRE ideals and UTSA’s educational initiatives to create learning and teaching opportunities in both directions,” he says
This includes a recent pilot to deploy “expert cyber teams” to assess and strengthen cybersecurity for nonprofits
“We have about 64 UTSA students and 12 MITRE mentors that are working together to protect local churches and nonprofits against cybersecurity threats.”
Here's what some of our recent UTSA interns say about their experience
“MITRE challenged me to learn skills and technologies far beyond the scope of my academic curriculum
Being tasked with solving problems related to containerization and cloud architecture
I was necessarily required to traverse unfamiliar territory and engage in continuous self-teaching
MITRE’s encouragement to remain vigilant and keep abreast of changing industry trends has allowed me to build a strong foundation for my career.” —Michael King
“The community at MITRE is absolutely inspiring and introduced me to boundless opportunities as a student
From learning about emerging technologies to connecting with top-tier professionals in technical fields
working with MITRE was so much more than I could have asked for
I have been able to reinforce and implement the skills and knowledge that I have obtained throughout my education to solve problems
The association between UTSA and MITRE presents both entities a bright future and limitless possibilities.” —Cheyenne Sanchez
“I have benefited immensely from this opportunity
There’s so much out there that you can’t get in a traditional class
and the experience of working with industry professionals is invaluable
Partnerships like this set the stage for UTSA students to better understand the industry
network and get involved in many research opportunities
and apply what they’ve learned in class to technical assignments.” —Intern David Akusu
I was fortunate enough to be involved in a very interesting cybersecurity research project
It gave me the opportunity to practice my skills in a real-world application and at the same time
I was so enthralled by this project and had done so much work
that I asked to stay on and keep working for fun
I was allowed to stay and a few months later I was given the opportunity to apply for a full-time position.” —Ryan DeWalt Vaughn
Many of the UTSA interns continue to work at MITRE during the school year
and Vaughn—applied for and were hired as full-time staff after they graduated

Andrew has served as rector for forty years
“The presentation of the miter is the crowning of your ministry as an Orthodox priest
but it is even more glowing of a tribute in that this is taking place here
in the bosom of the community that you have guided
and pastored for your entire priestly ministry,” His Beatitude said to Fr
“When you were handed the pastoral leadership of this community
the future of the parish was uncertain because of difficulties in the past
But your wisdom as a pastor and your insight as a confessor have
brought this community to its present place of stability.”
Father Andrew’s name was presented for consideration for the right to wear the miter
at the most recent meeting of the Holy Synod of Bishops in the spring of this year
His Beatitude noted the contributions of both Fr
Andrew and Matushka Galina in the field of sacred arts
you have taken the talent that was nurtured in your heart
Your work as an iconographer and Matushka’s labors as an embroiderer have had an influence on others and have led many to pursue Christ in holy orders or in the liturgical arts.”
Vladimir’s Seminary community prayerfully wishes Fr

Metropolitan Tikhon presented a miter to Archpriest Basil Summer in recognition of his many years of ministry
The decision to award the right to wear a miter to Father Basil was made by the Holy Synod of Bishops at its Spring Session in April 2018
Father Basil concelebrated the Liturgy with Metropolitan Tikhon in the Chancery’s Saint Sergius of Radonezh Chapel
NY. Also concelebrating was Archdeacon Joseph Matusiak. Many of Father Basil’s friends and former parishioners witnessed Metropolitan Tikhon place the miter on Father Basil’s head
Father Basil had served as Rector of Saint Mark Church
MD. He then went on to assume duties at the Chancery as the Director of the Fellowship of Orthodox Stewards
May God continue to grant Father Basil many years of witness and service to the Lord

After introducing two new lines at the 2021 PCA Convention & Trade Show—Dedicación Habano and St
Francis Colorado—the company has decided to keep things a bit simpler for this year’s show
That translates to a new vitola for all four current lines—at 4 1/2 x 44, it is the smallest size in the company’s portfolio so far—as well as a round vitola that was first released as part of the Dedicación line last year.
While the size of the booth is the same as at last year’s PCA show
this year’s space is configured a bit differently: the leather chairs have been replaced by a hightop table and chairs
which takes up less space overall and makes the booth look larger than before
All Saints St. Francis Colorado Mitre
These two new Mitre vitolas will be the first round sizes for both St
each of which currently includes only soft-box pressed cigars
The vitola is named after the traditional hat worn by Roman Catholic bishops and abbots as well as some Anglican and Lutheran bishops
Release Date: Fall 2022
All Saints Dedicación Habano Mitre
All Saints Dedicación Habano Vesper
This is a new vitola for the current four All Saints lines that will be rolled at Rocky Patel’s Tabacalera Villa Cuba S.A
In keeping with the religious theme of the company’s names
the Vesper is named after a prayer ritual that is part of the Liturgy of the Hours—also known as the Divine Office—that takes place in the late afternoon or the evening

This paper identifies four opportunities in a technology’s early life cycle and how strategic collaboration at each point can significantly accelerate advancement
The United States stands at the convergence of multiple inflection points within science and technology (S&T) advancement
which provides a unique strategic opportunity
Providing additional resources and enabling specific public-private collaboration at the right time and with the right focus can rapidly accelerate S&T development and its application across a variety of use cases
The Center for Data-Driven Policy brought together experts from varied backgrounds (managing federal research and development programs
investing as part of the venture capital community
and leading a variety of public-private partnerships) to provide guidance on how the nation can accelerate advancement of critical S&T
Our analysis identified four points within the normal technological evolutionary process where dedicated attention can greatly accelerate advancement and transition into application
Each point would benefit from different forms of partnerships
and we identified the value propositions required for key communities to participate in each
Authorities say blaze brought under control but likely to take days to extinguish amid drought conditions
Nearly 1,000 firefighters backed by water-dropping planes have been deployed to battle a massive blaze in France’s southern Gard region that burned 600 hectares (1,500 acres) and forced the evacuation of residents.
Local authorities said on Friday the wildfire had been brought under control but would take days to extinguish.
“Right now the situation is improving,” Gard department prefect Marie-Francoise Lecaillon told BFM television on Friday evening. “The fire has been contained. We must remain vigilant.”
Lt Col Eric Agrinier, a senior member of the fire service, also said on Friday: “This fire is far from being done. There are fronts in hard-to-reach areas that we haven’t tackled and that are advancing freely.”
“It’s going to be a feat of endurance,” he added later, pointing to unfavourable weather conditions.
Read moreWorking into the night after the blaze began late on Thursday
firefighters set backfires to protect inhabited areas
“We burn some parts [of the forest] so when the fire spreads it reaches an already-burned zone and slows down
that makes it easier to stop its advance,” said Jacques Pages
standing in front of a line of flames lighting up the pitch-black forest
Described by emergency responders as a “mega-fire”
the blaze started near the village of Bordezac and forced evacuations from nearby Bessèges and other settlements on Thursday night
The local prefect’s office said about 100 people had to be put up in holiday homes and restaurants in the area
which is about 90km (55 miles) north of Montpellier and the Mediterranean coast
“I’ve been finding rooms for people and all the holiday homes are doing the same,” said Regine Marchand
people left quickly without bringing anything
with only a garage and a small hut damaged
The Gard region fire service said on Friday morning that 13 firefighters were slightly injured
two planes have been dumping water since the early morning
the air deployment had stretched to 12 firefighting planes and two helicopters
Roads were closed to traffic entering the Bessèges area
while hundreds of firefighters remained on the scene
southeast France has suffered from drought this year
During an unseasonable heatwave last month
about 600 hectareswere burned in a fire started by shelling on an army artillery training range near the Mediterranean port city Marseille
Firefighters in that Bouches-du-Rhone region were called out to 35 outbreaks on Thursday
Four houses were destroyed near southern city Arles and 250 firefighters were called out to a brushfire in Saint-Mitre-les-Remparts
Although several other fires began in southern France on Thursday
The fire service said thousands of hectares of heavily wooded land were under threat
as winds gusting at up to 50mph fanned the flames through the dried-out trees
France’s national meteorological service put several neighbouring areas on red alert on Friday for fire risks and France’s environment ministry warned citizens in the area to beware fire risks
Wildfires have also hit other countries in Europe this summer
Scientists say climate change brings more drought and higher temperatures that make it easy for fires to start and spread
LOUIS — The final restructuring plan of St
Louis area Catholic parishes and schools will be announced Saturday evening
at Cardinal Rigali Center by Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski
Last fall, parishioners had the chance to share their thoughts during listening sessions at their parish
After gathering feedback from communities and religious leaders through surveys and listening sessions
the Archdiocese released a draft proposal that would merge about half of its 178 individual parishes.
Fifteen draft models show consolidating 178 parishes into 88 pastorates
a community that is under one pastor and pastoral team
Much of the consolidation of parishes is in north and south St
In late March, former Missouri state senator Bob Onder sent a letter to Archbishop Rozanski asking to halt the plan. Onder is representing the supporters of Save Our St. Louis Parishes
the group in opposition to the All Things New initiative.
Onder states he and the people he is representing have “not been treated well” and “All Things New has not advanced a collaboration with those most affected by the planning.”
outlined the efforts made by the Archdiocese within the last year from surveys and listening sessions
to meetings with stakeholders and those at the deanery and parish levels

In April 2020, All Saints Cigars—which was founded by Micky Pegg, Frank Layo and Martin Corboy the year before—released its first regular production line named Dedicación
which translates to dedication from Spanish
Specifically created as a tribute to all of the people Pegg is thankful for in his life
the regular production line is blended with a Mexican San Andrés wrapper covering all Nicaraguan tobacco in the binder and filler
Three months later, the company announced a line extension named Dedicación Habano which—as the name suggests—replaces the Mexican San Andrés wrapper on the original incarnation with a habano-seed wrapper
While both cigars use the same types of tobacco in the filler
according to All Saints the ratios have been changed between the blends
Each of the five vitolas is rolled at Rocky Patel’s Tabacalera Villa Cuba S.A
factory in Nicaragua and is packaged in boxes of 12 that started shipping to retailers in late November 2021
There are currently five different sizes in the All Saints Dedicación Habano lineup:
the All Saints Dedicación Habano has a number of attractive qualities
including a milk chocolate brown wrapper with a reddish tint
but one sample has a very peculiar mark on it—more on that below—and the cigar is extremely spongy when squeezed
Aroma from the wrapper is a combination of sweet cedar
while the foot includes aromas of generic nuts
the cold draw brings flavors of creamy cashews
I am not expecting a lighter start to the Dedicación Habano and I am not let down in that regard
A leather note with some noticeable spice on my tongue transitions to flavors of espresso beans and hay that remain the top notes in the profile for the first third
cinnamon and a slight floral note flit in and out
while the retrohale features both black pepper and a small amount of raisin sweetness
the latter of which seems to be getting a bit stronger as the first third burns down
both the draw and the smoke production is excellent on all three samples
and while one cigar does need a correction early on
body is between mild and medium and the strength is under the medium mark by the end of the first third
There is still plenty of spice present on my tongue as the second third of the cigar starts
but a strong cashew flavor has taken the top spot in the profile
nutmeg and the same light floral flavor from the first third
While the retrohale still includes some noticeable black pepper
the burn on the problematic cigar evens up nicely—the other two have no issues at all in that regard—while the draw and smoke production continue on their excellent path for all three
Both flavor and strength easily hit a solid medium by the time the second third comes to an end
while the body has increased to a point just under medium
Creamy and spicy are the names of the game for the All Saints Dedicación Habano during the final third
as the cashews flavor easily remains the main note in the profile and there is plenty of zingy spice present on my tongue until the last puff of the cigar
earth and dried tea leaves are all present at various points
but the floral flavor that I noticed from the first third is gone
there is virtually no change on the retrohale
with black pepper and raisin sweetness still humming along nicely
two of the cigars continue to give me no problems with burn
but one—albeit a different sample from the one that had issues in the first third—does need attention from my lighter
while the draw and smoke production for all three are excellent
body ends at a solid medium and the strength hits a point just over medium as I put the nub down with less than an inch remaining
I loved the All Saints Dedicación when I reviewed it two years ago
and while the Dedicación Habano Berkey is extremely enjoyable
it is missing the overt sweetness that put the original blend over the top for me
the Habano still features a number of attributes that the first line is missing
more transitions between thirds and flavors like espresso beans
All Saints has given fans two very distinct choices for its fans under the Dedicación banner
both of which feature excellent construction overall
if you are looking for a milder morning cigar that is sweeter on the retrohale
the original blend is right up your alley; however
creamy blend with a bit more of a spicy punch to it
the Dedicación Habano is absolutely a cigar that is worth the time and effort to track down

one of the largest churches in the Diocese of Florida
“It’s a tremendous blessing for me and my family,” Holt told TLC
but my parents are here and my I have a sister that lives in Jacksonville
And also a lot of good friends and connections.” He added
It’s a wonderful group of Christian people.”
St. Mark’s, which celebrated its centennial in 2022, is about nine miles southwest of the headquarters of the Diocese of Florida, where Holt had been employed since August 2022
he was hired by the diocese while an ecclesiastical court was reviewing complaints of voting irregularities in the election for bishop
He left the diocesan role at the end of July after “a nice farewell party,” he said
Holt was the apparent winner in two diocesan elections, in May and November, 2022. Both elections were challenged by diocesan delegates who objected to Holt’s conservative views on same-sex marriage. The latter election was nullified after Holt fell short of receiving the consent of a majority of bishops with jurisdiction and standing committees
Samuel Johnson Howard reaches the mandatory retirement age of 72 on September 8
and must step down not longer than three months later
the Standing Committee will become the ecclesiastical authority of the diocese
pending election of a new bishop at a time to be determined
After the second election, Howard was accused of having discriminated for years against LGBTQ priests
to the extent that a church court called into question the validity of the election
The bishop and Standing Committee vehemently rebutted the court’s findings
but Holt’s candidacy probably was doomed at that point
Episcopal bishops and active lay leaders overwhelmingly support same-sex marriage
and even voters who might be willing to let a conservative diocese have a conservative bishop had bullet-proof grounds for withholding consent
According to data from the annual parochial reports
Mark’s had an average Sunday attendance of 172 in 2021 — and 308 in 2019
Plate and pledge income was $1.4 million in 2021
a level that has held steady for the past decade
it is one of the half-dozen largest among the 66 churches in the Diocese of Florida that filed a parochial report for 2021
A rector search at a large church typically takes a year or longer
and involves interviews of multiple candidates by a search committee
“The vestry was the search committee for St
And so they were probably a little more nimble than a more drawn-out search process,” Holt said
He will preach his first sermon on August 13
“It’s a church that was extremely supportive of me through the whole process” of the election and consent period
adding that he began talking with the vestry the day after the consent process ended on July 21
The church and a diocesan spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment
Mark’s played a key role in Holt’s formation as a Christian and an Episcopalian
After being baptized and confirmed as a Methodist in his youth
He was living as a self-described atheist at a fraternity at the University of Florida in Gainesville when he reconnected with a high school friend who was a member of St
“He was really the one that led me back to the Lord,” Holt said
Holt said he has no interest in running in another election for bishop
“That was a challenging thing to be a part of,” he said
“I am really focused on being rector of St
Mark’s Episcopal Church and doing a great job for them.”
Mark’s and the Diocese of Florida are both financial supporters of the Living Church Foundation
Kirk Petersen began reporting news for TLC as a freelancer in 2016
and was Associate Editor from 2019 to 2024

amidst the hustle and bustle of unloading operations
container number TCLU 225611/3 was extracted from the port area through deft maneuvers coordinated between a straddle carrier and a semi-trailer
escaping the vigilance of foremen and digital monitoring alike
The truck's driver and his passenger hurried off with their precious cargo: over three tons of extra-pure cocaine
Yet the couriers were unaware that the authorities had set a trap for them and were hot on their trail
A tip-off from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
the US federal agency in charge of the war on drugs
had put French police on the trail of this illicit cargo container
a container ship flying the flag of the Republic of the Marshall Islands
Several ports of call had been planned on its route
including a February 6 stopover in Costa Rica
where it was notably scheduled to pick up a container of banana puree
of which the country is a major world producer
A network of drug traffickers slipped cocaine into the container
concealed in a shipment purchased by Andros
its last ports of call were in Italy: Livorno and Genoa
in simultaneous stealth operations conducted in both ports
the Italian carabinieri entered the suspect container
They discovered 3.3 metric tons of cocaine
The illicit cargo was immediately seized and replaced with dummy "bricks," filled with flour and rigged with GPS trackers
The Marseille port traffickers took these decoys in the back of a Renault Master van to an empty villa in the nearby village of Saint-Mitre-les-Remparts

Louis says it will not be closing any schools for the 2024-2025 school year
It comes months after the archdiocese announced its "All Things New" restructuring plan that closed 35 parishes and merged 15 others
Now, pastors with parish schools have until February 2024 to work on a feasibility plan that outlines strategies to be taken to “ensure the long-term viability” of the elementary schools, according to the All Things New site.
The long-term feasibility plans should consider cost projections, funding sources and school enrollment. The archdiocese says staffing and salary considerations, parish demographics and other ministries of the parish are also factors in determining a school’s feasibility.
During the "All Things New" planning process, data was gathered on the schools.
Earlier this fall, elementary schools had consultations based on that data. The archdiocese says “after a period of discernment” all pastors recommended to Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski that their schools remain open for the 2024-2025 school years.
In a FAQ document on the archdiocese site, it says parents should proceed as planned for the next school year and watch for announcements from their school.

precious objects donated in tribute to the patron saint of Naples
has rarely left the southern Italian city and spent centuries locked in a vault
The 70 pieces were transported under heavily armed guard to a central Rome museum earlier this month and will be on display until February
The hoard includes what is thought to be one of the most precious pieces of jewelry in the world - the necklace of San Gennaro, begun in 1679 to adorn a gold and silver bust containing the skull of the saint. Read the full story
Just when I thought Spokane was running out of characters
an email arrived from a guy claiming to be St
Patrick was willing to grant me an exclusive interview
What sold me was the photograph that Tom Keefe attached to his email
the gray-bearded Keefe was decked out in green-and-gold vestments that would have fooled the real saint
Keefe’s head was topped with a triangular green-and-gold headpiece known as a mitre to theologians or “silly hat” to the rest of us
curled staff used for controlling sheep or keeping downtown panhandlers at bay
I told Keefe that if he had enough guts to meet me in a public place wearing these duds
we shared a booth in O’Doherty’s Pub & Irish Grille
Q: So what brings you all the way to Spokane
A: Tim O’Doherty (owner of the pub bearing his name) asked if I’d help give the St
Patrick’s Day festivities a shot in the arm
Q: How the heck does one obtain such a grand outfit
A: This incredible thing happened while I was dead so many years
Q: Didn’t the previous holy man need his vestments anymore
Q: There’s been a lot of that going around
the Catholic Church will soon be getting a new pope
Is there a theological term for that process
But I see you’re wearing sandals with leprechaun socks
Q: You’re pretty quick-witted for being 1,500 years dead
A: I do have a touch of Irish Alzheimer’s
A: It’s when you forget everything but your grudges
I think you’d better tell me what you have planned for the upcoming festivities and parade that bear your name
A: Wednesday noon I’ll be at Anthony’s restaurant for a meeting with local Irish dignitaries
Next Saturday I’ll be in the noon parade riding in a white limo
I’ll also be at O’Doherty’s on Saturday and Sunday
Patrick is said to be the most popular saint in all of Christendom
And I see you’ve ordered one of O’Doherty’s famous corned beef sandwiches
Q: I just noticed that you’ve got an advertisement for Guinness beer stuck to the front of your priestly hat
Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland
I was hoping you might do something about ridding the reptiles out of City Hall
Patrick just handed me what looks like a wanted poster
On it is a very unflattering photo of Spokane City Councilman Mike Fagan
Jay Inslee a “lying whore” in an anti-tax publication
Q: To quote from the poster: “Fagan the Pagan” is wanted for “kidnapping
blasphemy against civil authorities & more.” That’s sort of rough
A: Fagan really is the Celtic word for pagan
A: I don’t know what the Celtic word for weasel is
Will you be going back to your Irish grave after the holiday
A: To see the Zags win a national championship
Q: You’re not the only one praying for that

When Archbishop Charles Chaput and Cardinal Justin Rigali accompanied Archbishop Dominik Duka of Prague to the shrine of his countryman
because Philadelphia’s first saint is considered a father of Catholic education in light of the many schools founded while he was bishop
There the children enthusiastically welcomed the visitors
and it is great to experience their enthusiasm,” Archbishop Chaput remarked
Archbishop Duka is the metropolitan for Budweis
but all of the Czech Republic is proud to have nurtured Philadelphia’s first saint
Redemptorist Father Alfred Bradley presented Archbishop Duka with a framed portrait of St
“We thought you might have one or two of these in your archdiocese
He also gave the two archbishops a first-class relic of the saint
“At the tomb of holy John Nepomucene Neumann I pray for our country and for the United States of America,” Archbishop Duka said in brief remarks
“And also I pray for the Church in my country and for vocations in the Czech Republic.”
Cardinal Rigali explained to Archbishop Duka that some of the most important relics and features of the shrine
especially the remains of the saint visible through glass under the altar
The Cardinal himself oversaw the 2007 rehabilitation at which time a lifelike mask executed by famed forensic sculptor Frank Bender was placed on the head and vestments appropriate to the mid-19th century were placed on the effigy that contains the saints’ remains
“I was ordained a bishop in that miter,” Cardinal Rigali said
As for the visit of the Archbishop of Prague
“we are receiving another gift from the Czech Republic,” Archbishop Chaput said
but the bishop who represents that diocese is here to show their love for St
John Neumann but also respect for this diocese that received him
It’s an act of friendship and an act of faith that brings us together; faith in St
John Neumann himself and the friendship which brings us together.”

I agree with the school choice program but
I think it falls short on allowing every student that choice
We should adapt the program that florida is using in allowing families to choose the school within a certain distance
It would make schools more accountable for the education they are providing our children
I agree with school choice and vouchers for freedom of choice
It’s about time that our students from poorer neighborhoods have the oportunities that better school districts can provide
How is it possible you can have the best school district in the country
wallingford school disatrict and the least effective school district in the state within 3 miles of each other
Chester upland school district receives highest tax base and largest goverament funding from federal and state funds and we have the least productive scholastically in the state
private education but every students cost half of what we spend to educate in our public education everywhere
The children reach their highest and majority are geared to higher education
Catholic education has unions the unions have nothing to fear
Let’s make all public education become equal scholastically but till then let’s make our taxes work for our students everywhere
We are americans give us the right to school choice and private vouchers
it all comes down to parental envolement and cooporation

2024 Photo: Depositphotos.comThe Dutch celebrate Sinterklaas on December 5 and that means going home from work early
here’s a quick inburgering lesson to bring you up to speed
The man in the mitre is impersonating Saint Nicholas
news of his miracles spread around Western Europe and he became the patron saint of practically every section of society
This goes back to the saint’s skill in piecing back together three children who had been chopped up by an innkeeper and put in a vat of brine
The story of how Saint Nicholas comes at night to deliver presents is based on his generosity to three prostitutes who were tossed sacks of gold for a dowry through the window under cover of night
Of course he immediately became patron saint of prostitutes too
The feast of St Nicholas has been celebrated for at least 700 years in the Netherlands and
went underground when it was banned during the Reformation
Many of today’s traditions – such as Sinterklaas’s helper Piet (was Black Pete, now Sooty Pete)
came from a book written by teacher Jan Schenkman in 1850 and the real commercialisation of Sinterklaas began in the 1930s
children would find a present in their shoe on December 6
which is officially St Nicholas’ saints day in the Catholic church calendar
the partying has gradually shifted to the night before
which is also known as pakjesavond or parcels evening
The arrival of Sinterklaas The Meertens Institute says the first intocht van Sinterklaas
took place in Zwolle in 1873 when ‘a couple of well-to do farmers had a local prankster dress up as Sinterklaas distributing sweets to poor children’
Since 1952 the arrival of Sinterklaas has been a televised event which sees the Sint and his helpers land in style from their steam boat from Spain (although Sinterklaas has been known to arrive by train
A different place to set foot on dry land is judiciously chosen every year
Sinterklaas always arrives on a Saturday at least three weeks before December 5 so you have lots of time to spend money on presents
Zwarte Piet No lesson about Sinterklaas would be complete without tackling the issue of Zwarte Piet
or Black Piet – white people dressed up with curly black wigs
who used to accompany Sinterklaas at his official arrival and at parades all over the country
in 2011 a campaign to ‘kick out Zwarte Piet’ was launched by a group of anti-racism activists and a lot of demonstrations later
the blackface character has largely disappeared
although there are still pockets of resistance
KOZP is heading for its last campaign next year
Frontman Jerry Afriyie said the plan was always to stop in 2025
“People who preceeded us in the fight against racism without a deadline burned out,” he said
Drawing lots Once Sinterklaas and his sooty Piets actually in the country
First of all you have to decide who you are going to celebrate with and then you draw lots to determine who you will give a present to
an agreement is made about how much will be spent on the presents
Shoes In the days leading up to the all important December 5
children put their shoes in front of the fire (or the radiator) in the hope that Sinterklaas will fill it with a small present or a chocolate goody
Some children think they can get around the Sint by leaving a carrot for the bishop’s horse
In the olden days a disobedient child would find a potato in his/her shoe
or a roe (a bunch of twigs used to chastise naughty children) but these days this is deemed too traumatic
are sung when the children put their shoe in front of the fireplace and at the beginning of the December 5 festivities
Most of the songs date from the 19th and early 20th century and some have been adapted to the changing times: in the traditional welcoming song ‘Sinterklaasje
kom maar binnen met je knecht’ (Sinterklaas please come in with your servant) the word ‘servant’ has been replaced by ‘Piet’
every Dutch child comes face-to-face with Sinterklaas
whether it be at school or their hockey club or even a home visit
there are lots of specialist agencies around who will supply you with a Sint and Piet
or even a video message from the great man
Sinterklaas carries with him ‘het grote boek’: a big book with the name of every man
woman and child in it which tells him if they are deserving of a present or not
he will read out all about you from the book (slipped to him in advance by mum or dad) and hand over your gifts
Sinterklaas used to be much more moralistic than he is now
and stories of him threatening to put naughty children in a sack and take them to Spain are very much grandparents’ era
Poems Sinterklaas is a feast primarily for children but make no mistake: it’s also an annual grudge fest for grown-ups
People all over the Netherlands are rolling up their sleeves and licking their pencils to have a go at their siblings and friends via another great tradition: the poem
which should rhyme and is read out loud by the recipient
is often used as way to score points and take public revenge on your fellow party-goers
it is a great way to remind your offspring of the importance of cleaning their teeth or being nice to their brothers and sisters
be aware that you may get a poem pointing out that your Dutch accent is crap or you drink too much
Surprises Another Sinterklaas tradition is the so-called surprise – or extremely elaborately wrapped up and disguised present
This will plunge households into a frenzy of creativity and closed doors
Some people become extremely competitive and will go to tiresome lengths: for instance by putting your car keys in a block of ice which then has to be defrosted using a hairdryer after which you have to look for a clue to the present in the car
like to bury their gift in as much gunk as possible
will also be required to make a surprise for a classmate – an intensely competitive affair for both child and parents
Food Food is an important part of Sinterklaas and the giving of speculaas (spiced biscuits
often in the form of the saint) dates back centuries
The sale of Sinterklaas goodies seems to start earlier every year
so make sure to buy your chocolate letters in time or you will find you are left with a choice of S or P (for Sint and Piet)
Pepernoten (mini ginger biscuits) which now come in a bewildering number of guises, taai taai (chewy aniseed biscuits) and schuimpjes, comprised of sugar and artificial colourings, will keep children jittery for weeks.
Together, pepernoten and schuimpjes form strooigoed or stuff that is thrown into the room by Sint or Piet (usually by an invisible hand belonging to an obliging neighbour). The tipple for a Sinterklaas feast is bisschopswijn, or mulled wine.
Bonus point International families may well end up celebrating both Sinterklaas and Christmas, urged on by children who are quick to see the advantages of getting two lots of presents within the space of one month.

Link copiedShareShare articleThousands have protested in Naples in a bid to prevent the Catholic Church gaining any control over the treasure of a local saint that is reputedly worth more than the British crown jewels.
"We're protecting a centuries-old institution, we will not stand for interference from either the Church or the government," said Paolo Jorio, the director of the San Gennaro museum where the jewels are kept.
The protest was sparked by a decree issued by Interior Minister Angelino Alfano, who ruled the council was the same as any other caretaker body which manages religious buildings — such as Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome — and ordered four of the committee's posts should be in the hands of the church.
Critics say his move opens the door to church control as it threatens a lay council that for centuries has guarded the jewel-encrusted treasures, donated by kings and aristocrats in honour of San Gennaro.
More than 3,000 locals, some wearing t-shirts with pictures of the saint, tied white handkerchiefs to the gate of the museum and neighbouring chapel, with many holding signs reading: "Don't touch the treasure."
The lay council was established in the 16th century as the southern Italian city struggled to overcome a series of devastating misfortunes — a resurgence of the plague, a siege by the French and an eruption of volcano Vesuvius, which set off earthquakes.
Those who survived pledged in 1527 to build a chapel to their patron saint — known as St Januarius in English — who was beheaded in AD305 during the persecution of Christians by the Emperor Diocletian.
Not only was the chapel built with the city's money, it was presided over by the newly-formed council, made up of 12 lay citizens and the mayor, and came to house one of the world's most important collections of religious treasures.
As well as silver busts of saints, there are heavily-jewelled necklaces and earrings and a golden mitre, the ceremonial headdress of bishops, which is studded with 3,326 diamonds, 164 rubies and nearly 200 emeralds.
But the council and its supporters said it was much more than that — particularly because it oversees the Gennaro miracle.

Three times a year, a ceremony is held in which locals pray for miraculous liquefaction of the saint's blood, held in a glass vial clutched by a priest or cardinal.
If the blood does not return to liquid from its coagulated state, it is seen as a bad omen for the city — a harbinger, say the superstitious, of a disaster, perhaps even the eruption of mighty Vesuvius, which looms over the city.
A white handkerchief is waved to announce a miracle.
It is an important tradition, both for devotees and the church, but it is the council which safeguards the vial, and the mayor who invites the Archbishop of Naples into the chapel for the liquefaction ceremony.
Critics said the church has tried several times down the centuries to gain control of the vial and treasure.
"We think Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe (Archbishop of Naples) has applied great pressure on Alfano, in order to extend his influence over one of the most well-known symbols of popular religion," Mr Jorio said.
He said the council would appeal the decree in court and further protests would be held in a bid to get it reversed.
Naples's mayor Luigi De Magistris, head of the council, said they would do what it takes to "make sure what San Gennaro gave us is not diminished".

To commemorate the 450th anniversary from the foundation of the first Confraternity of the Holy Rosary in the Dominican church of the Annunciation of Vittoriosa
the mitre of Pope St Pius V was brought over from the papal basilica of St Mary Major in Rome.
The Dominican pope St Pius V has deep historical affinities with Malta
being in a particular way a great benefactor of Malta’s Capital City
holds special ties with the saintly pope since by a decree issued on July 2
he appointed the prior of the Dominican priory of the Annunciation in Vittoriosa
as the first parish priest of Valletta’s first parish dedicated to Our Lady of Safe Harbour.
St Pius V is the founder of the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary
after he attributed the 1571 Christian victory in Lepanto to the prayer of the rosary.
The devotion towards Our Lady of the Rosary has a long history at the Dominican church of the Annunciation in Vittoriosa
where an altar is already found dedicated to the rosary along with another in the Dominican church of Rabat
Only a short while after the Battle of Lepanto in 1571
two bequests made to the Confraternity of the Rosary of the Annunciation church of Vittoriosa are found
which attest to the existence of the confraternity already at least by 1571
A solemn pontifical mass for the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary will be presided by Mgr Archbishop Alessandro d’Errico

The building previously occupied by Mitre 10 in Jellicoe St
the former Mitre 10 building on Jellicoe St is the subject of some interest
says Te Puke Economic Development Group (EDG) general manager Mark Boyle
The owner had carried out a lot of work on the building and received consent for it to be used as Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) accommodation
“He did a lot of work on upgrading the building [with respect to] its fire rating
future-proofing it and making it fit for purpose and had a very serious look at establishing an RSE facility
but that all got interrupted by Covid,” says Boyle
“But it’s still potentially an idea that could be developed.”
He says the idea was to have a facility specifically for RSE workers who would be dropped off and picked up
Other possible uses for the building are also being explored
“There are a number of different people who are looking seriously at activity in that building that would add value to Te Puke from a retail perspective.”
He says there has been interest from businesses that could potentially “have a positive impact on other retailers”
Mark says while the building has been empty for a considerable time
“There have been three or four very serious people [who have looked] at it and [Te Puke EDG] are actively talking to people to encourage interest in the building
“The landlord’s very willing to try to work with people to create something that will work.”

before being put back on the market in October 2015

and has spent the past 18 months gutting and renovating the building
The Mitre will officially reopen on Monday
and craft beers will be on sale from 8.30 a.m
and international charities and initiatives that support people suffering from debt
said on Tuesday: “We see the Mitre as a public home; once a ‘free house’ and now a place which could be seen as a ‘freedom house’ as we will be profiling our social action projects
“We were pleased to have had youngsters from the St Edmunds Society work on the renovation and gain valuable experience — teenagers who are not in mainstream education and are learning trades in the hope of having a future.”
The congregation numbered about 30 when Mr Dyble arrived at St Thomas’s with a £50,000 “pump-priming” grant from HTB, but without a team, in 2013. Today, attendance across all services and two sites stands at about 450 people (Features, 21 April)
The Mitre was bought with donations from the congregation
through a specially created PCC-run trading company
which also runs the Sanctuary coffee shop at St Thomas’s second site
“The congregation have been totally supportive and are so excited to be part of this amazing project,” Mr Dyble said
“It has been through their generous giving — in money
and skills — that this has been possible.”
said: “The Mitre pub was a rather unkempt and forlorn advertisement for the episcopate
until the people of St Thomas’s Church turned it into a centre for the community and a hub for parish life
“It is a further sign of the commitment of the people of St Thomas’s to the community they serve
and a fresh expression of a truly public house
one where everyone is welcome in the name of Christ.”

Next time you find yourself in Mitre Square
have a look at the street sign on the alleyway that leads up to Duke’s Place
The street sign mounted on the wall stipulates that this little thoroughfare is called St James’s Passage
This is the last surviving indicator of the church that used to stand exactly where Sir John Cass’s Primary School is now located
The long-vanished Parish Church of St James’s Duke’s Place is worth remembering for the notoriety it once enjoyed in performing irregular marriages within the City of London
which today encompasses the primary school
Mitre Square and Mitre Street once formed part of the wealthy and powerful monastic settlement of Holy Trinity Aldgate
Then came along Henry VIII who famously fell out with the pope over the latter’s stubborn refusal to annul Henry’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon to enable the king to marry Anne Boleyn
The megalomaniacal response from the lustful king ultimately led to the establishment of the Protestant Church of England
an event that would change the country forever
One of the outcomes of this was that all the wealthy religious monasteries in England were dissolved
with their buildings and real estate confiscated and the land either given or sold to influential friends of the king
with the land being seized from the Augustinian canons and passed to Sir Thomas Audley
This is where the modern street name of Duke’s Place comes from
one vestige of the old monastery bizarrely remains in place today
with some ancient medieval arches now protected and entombed inside the modern office block located at the junction of Leadenhall Street and Mitre Street
Large glass windows mean that you can easily view this medieval relic from street level
and if you have never noticed this before it is most certainly worth a quick look next time you pass by
The land eventually passed into the ownership of the City of London Corporation
with King James I agreeing to demands from local people that they should have their own parish church
after some parishioners fell out with the clergy at nearby St Katherine Cree
but it is worth noting that this wasn’t exactly your typical City parish church
it fell outside the control of the Bishop of London
and the City of London Corporation maintained and exercised the right to appoint the minister
The new church soon manipulated this unusual situation to gain a bit of a reputation for itself by becoming the place where people could get hitched while bypassing the irksome rules and regulations that would normally apply
Marriage banns continue to be a tradition within the Church of England
whereby the parish priest will announce the intention of a couple to marry during the main Sunday service for three consecutive Sundays preceding any planned marriage
The purpose of this is to publicise impending marriages so that members of the community have the opportunity to raise any religious or civil objections they might have to proposed nuptials
because of the legal loophole of St James’s Duke’s Place not falling under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of London
people could get hitched there without these banns having to be read out in church beforehand
if people couldn’t wait for three Sundays for the banns to be read
they would instead require a special license granted by the Bishop of London
this didn’t apply here as the parish conveniently fell outside the bishop’s control
parental consent was not required to tie the knot at St James’s Duke’s Place
Your pesky father couldn’t therefore ruin your amorous designs to marry the love of your life by refusing to give his consent to the betrothal
not toeing the line with these rules would render your marriage null and void
this made this tiny little parish church a very popular place to get wed in London during the 17th century
Some 40,000 marriages were recorded as having taken place here between 1644 and 1691
that’s an incredible average of more than 16 marriages every week for 47 straight years
Not bad going for a tiny parish with less than 200 houses within its boundaries
Aldgate’s own version of Gretna Green was a City tradition that was not to stand the test of time
By the 19th century there were minimal numbers of Christians left living in an area that had become almost exclusively Jewish
The dwindling congregation remaining at St James’s Duke’s Place stood in marked contrast to the full pews at the Great Synagogue
The Union of City Benefices Act of 1874 finally saw St James’s Duke’s Place pulled down and the land sold off
eventually to become the site of the relocated Sir John Cass’s School
the victim of Nazi bombing during the Blitz
two and a half centuries’ worth of corpses were exhumed from the churchyard of St James’s Duke’s Place and reinterred in the City of London Cemetery in Manor Park
The location of this former burial ground now covers much of the current school playground
blissfully unaware of what used to lie beneath
