Last week I covered the latest update from United Airlines, Lufthansa and Deutsche Bahn which are increasing their Air-Rail coverage links
and it is going to see Air France further increase its coverage with SNCF
The sustainability agenda in France is more pressured
with airlines made to drop some routes due to environmental concerns
there is a push for multi-modal travel such as this to aid travellers from the airport to a train and onto their final destination
Mixes like this allow for a passenger to get off an aircraft
board a train and arrive in a city or town
ready for the last-mile part of their travel
I would love a lot more airlines to partner with train companies to offer these multi-modal travel options

The latest expansion of the French flag carrier's Train + Air service comes amid a government push for more rail travel in favor or domestic air travel
Air France has expanded its ‘Train + Air’ service by adding eight more rail routes
This service has been available to Air France passengers traveling in and out of Paris for over 30 years
The addition enables travelers to purchase SNCF rail tickets to Paris airports from various locations throughout France under a single reservation along with their flight tickets
The service can be used for both inbound and outbound flights from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) or Paris-Orly Airport (ORY)
providing passengers with more options for seamless connections when traveling around France
The eight additional routes announced last week take the total number of rail journeys served by the program to 41
The route between Aix-en-Provence and Paris-Orly adds to the already-included service between Aix-en-Provence and Paris Charles de Gaulle
all services to Paris-Orly include a private taxi transfer between Massy TGV station and the airport
This latest expansion takes the total number of domestic rail stations with eligible connections to Paris to 22:
Air France’s Train + Air service offers seamless rail connections to over 20 destinations throughout France and several other benefits for passengers
These include a guaranteed seat on the next available flight or train in case of a delay or missed connection and the ability to check in for the entire journey online at airfrance.com
La Première and Business Class passengers will also travel in first class on their SNCF rail journeys
The Train + Air service has recently added eight new routes
This came when the country banned short-haul domestic flights between destinations that can be reached by rail in less than 2.5 hours
The government made this controversial decision to accelerate France towards its net-zero ambitions
and other European countries are considering similar moves
and German rail operator Deutsche Bahn by purchasing rail connections from 25 different stations when flying to the U.S

From the moment you arrive into the Loire Valley Lodges - a half-hour drive from Saint-Pierre-des-Corps train station - it’s clear that every element of the experience is designed to create the right conditions for mental rest
trees are very much supporting characters throughout our stay at the experiential luxury property
smiley staff wearing sage jumpers and dungarees
and tied fabric bracelets round our wrists
Staff can also tell you
based on where your birthday falls in the Celtic tree calendar
and whereabouts in the grounds you can find it (be it naturally occurring in the forest
or as part of the walls of one of the buildings)
you see how immersive rituals and storytelling are important to the overall experience of Loire Vally Lodges - small but attentive details that help shift your mindset from whatever you’ve left behind
to focus on connecting with the here and now
We were dropped off at our lodge with our luggage via golf buggy
These paths lead you back to the main lodge where the reception
There are no lamps along these paths in order to prevent light pollution
so each lodge is equipped with a handheld torch for walking back at night
adds to the experience of adapting your senses to the natural surrounds of the forest
Each of the 18 lodges at Loire Valley Lodges is build on stilts, with stairs up to the front door – apart from one ground-level lodge suitable for guests with reduced mobility
The excitement of staying up amongst the trees really hits you when you open the front door and turn into the bedroom to see the floor to ceiling window wall opposite the king-size bed
There are switch-controlled electric blinds should you want to block out the morning light
and narrow floor-to-ceiling windows that can be fully opened during hot weather
Our lodge felt extremely private and secluded
Being there and in the thick of the trees had a remarkably calming effect
who had painted a New York scene directly onto the wall of the lodge above the bed
Framed photos documenting this process was hanging in the lodge
as well as coffee table books of his urban photography to browse through
and in each lodge the artist’s personality comes through in these touches
The overall décor of the lodges has the feel of a contemporary luxury cabin in the woods
was a 25 sqm terrace partially covered terrace with a hot tub
There’s also a pulley with rope - which is there to support one of our favourite details about our stay
breakfast is delivered in a picnic basket to each lodge (upon check in
and once your breakfast has arrived and attached to the pulley via a carabiner clip
you tug the rope to make your breakfast reach you
then enjoy it on the terrace of your lodge
Fresh
organic produce is served: locally caught sashimi salmon
butter and tiny shots of mineral water - all of which made for a delicious spread each day
a Bodum gooseneck kettle and supplies of ground coffee and various types of tea leaves (including fresh herbs)
A karaffe with a charcoal stick can be used to purify the tap water from the bathroom (taking 1-3 hours)
There’s an in-room wine-list for ordering a bottle to your lodge should the mood take you
The lodge’s plush bathroom had a metro-tiled walk-in shower
The organic Leif amenities smelt incredible - especially the Boronia hand wash (nutgrass
a small amount of closet space and a luggage rack
In keeping with the idea of switching off and focusing on connecting with nature
there is no in-room wifi at Loire Valley Lodges (there is wifi at reception for when you need to check in with the rest of the world)
there’s a walkie-talkie for calling reception
but we did struggle to get ours working when we called to double check what time we’d booked for dinner
There are EU and USB power ports by each side of the bed
Another highlight for us was the mango wood speakers
which you can dock your phone in to play music (rather than relying on power) which created a really lovely
These speakers are on sale in the lodge’s on-site gift shop
and we loved it so much we bought one to take home
The central lodge at Loire Valley Lodges - housing the reception
restaurants and bar - has terrace that runs the length of the building
lavender spheres to the open air pool area
Here
a golden sculpture of butterflies perching on a skull glints in the sun
with the backdrop of the forest towering behind it
creating a dreamy view from the sun loungers
Drinks from the bar can be served to sun bathers around the pool (which is heated to 27 degrees) and there are changing facilities with towels and blankets
We enjoyed a special dinner at Ardent restaurant (which was extremely busy with locals on a summery Monday evening
We sipped diablo cocktails on the terrace while we waited for our table (decked out with rattan furniture and tables)
“Art is the highest form of hope” is grafted onto the hunters lodge walls
alongside taxidermy stag head and exposed wooden beams
Chef Thomas Besnault creates menus inspired by everything grown in the resort’s organic fruit and vegetable gardens and readily growing in the forest
with the freshness of everything elevates every dish
The presentation of each dish is meticulous
capitalising on the unique beauty of the ingredients themselves (such as daintily sliced asparagus spears and carefully arranged flower petals) and it’s astonishing how powerful the authentic flavours of each ingredient can taste when cooked this way
Diners can opt for set menus with four
Moments include a monkfish topped with a butter and white garlic sauce
and a celery soup seasoned with Douglas fir
bitter well-rounded taste that nods to the forest and lingers in your mouth after each spoonful
A highlight was the smoked rhubarb for dessert topped with a raspberry coulis
The second restaurant at Loire Valley Lodges
Asperatus is also housed in the main lodge
we dine in the gravelled courtyard overlooking the aromatic garden
The al fresco open kitchen creates Mediterranean grill dishes
and we tuck into a super tender pork ribs dusted with freshly chopped herbs picked from the garden next to us - once again
the focus is on bringing out the natural flavours
with excellent wine recommendations from the extensive
with plenty of options to try from the Loire Valley region
we borrow mountain bikes and explore the trails using a map of the grounds
we climb up rickety (but safe) watchtowers
cycle through fields with waist-level reeds
and pause to listen to the unique sound of frogs shrieking
Throughout the grounds
seating is informally scattered in scenic spots
including in the middle of the beautiful on-site vegetable gardens
with a comfy glass-walled viewing cabin next to it
You can take a seat and use the binoculars provided to watch thriving bees at work
We spend half a day cycling between the art sculptures dotted around the forest grounds
stopping for photos and to take in the scenery
before heading to the pool to lounge in the sun
Loire Valley Lodges can recommend trails of various lengths for running
and can arrange day trips to the nearby Tours (the temporary capital of France during World War II) or hot air balloon rides above the region’s chateaux
The wellness offering at Loire Valley Lodges fully leans into the surrounding nature
the choice of massages take place on the terrace of your lodge
choreographed to revive your senses with the sounds
Other tempting options on treatment menu are the three-hour forest bath experience - guided by the property’s founder
Anna Frey - where you’re encouraged to breathe with the trees and open up your senses to the forest on another level
and hour-long sound baths in property’s intriguing new wood and glass panelled
The property creates the conditions that help you lean into being in the moment
and the deep relaxation that comes from giving yourself permission to do nothing
The resort’s near-spiritual approach to connecting guests with nature at every turn feels like something your body and mind is truly craving
something you’d like to bottle up and keep if you could
and are presented with our own sapling to take home - so we can take the forest with us - it feels like the final flourish to a perfectly written story
Stays at Loire Valley Lodges start from €440 euros per night including breakfast
SNCF and Air France have added 8 connections to their “Train + Air” routes to and from Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Paris-Orly

The largest fidget spinner is 1.60 m (5 ft 3 in) in length
and was achieved by Endel Engie (France) in Saint-Pierre-Des-Corps
The record was attempted as part of a competition run by one of Endel Engie's customers
The competition was to design the 'nicest' fidget spinner
Instead of designing and building a pretty fidget spinner
Endel Engie Engie decided to build the largest
They used the biggest ball bearings manufactured at their plant
The ball bearings are typically used in wind turbines but Endel Engie managed to find a fun alternative purpose

Pamplemousse have released a new video for their new single “Vicious Mind“, the second extract from their new album “Think Of It” which will be released on March 17th by A Tant Rêver du Roi (Vinyl
The band will be on tour in France in March (see concert listings below) including a date at the Trabendo in Paris with Fuzz (Ty Segall – Sold Out)
formed in 2017 and released their first self-titled album on the French label “A Tant Rêver du Roi”
Their sound is a mix of Noise and Garage rock with a hint of Blues
Their second album “High Strung” was also released on the same label and recorded on analog at Studio Black Box in Angers with Peter Deimel
Both albums were critically acclaimed nationally and internationally
with comparisons to 90s masters such as Shellac and Fugazi
Vicious Mind by PamplemousseVicious Mind by Pamplemousse
Pamplemousse’s music is best experienced live
as their powerful sound breaks away from traditional genres like Noise
The band debuted in mainland France by opening for Unsane in Paris
after which they toured extensively throughout France
sharing the stage with other underground acts like LANE
Pamplemousse changed their line up and it was now as a duo that the band locked themselves away for a year to compose their third album “Think Of It“
The album was recorded in 2022 at the Black Box by Peter Deimel
and mixed by them in their studio in Reunion Island
the duo continues to craft their style: nervous
savage with noisy punk gems like “Vicious Mind” or “Mexican Boy”
but Pamplemousse also widens its spectrum and leans towards indie rock like on the heady “One Millions Doors”
the tension is palpable and the eruption always close…

is practicing scales when his visitor arrives
"Sorry there isn't much room in here," Jude says
getting up from one piano before wending his way among countless others filling his living room
part of a unique collection totalling around 150
Jude and his cat live among the pianos in a four-bedroom house at the end of a cul-de-sac in Saint Pierre des Corps
a suburb of the central French city of Tours
A wooden gate opens into a yard cluttered with pianos stored in crates and protected from the elements with blue tarpaulins
These are overflow instruments that the 63-year-old music teacher cannot manage to squeeze inside or in the garage
His passion for the stately instruments has driven Jude to rescue scores of them from oblivion
sniffing out hidden treasures at charity shops and auctions
"You're in a sort of orphanage here," Jude smiles
"In the '70s and '80s it was fashionable to turn pianos into furniture
Many of those that I bought for a pittance would no doubt have ended up as bars
People often are unaware of the value of the pianos they give away or sell for a song
Five of Jude's pianos have been recognised as national heritage: an upright Clementi from 1820
including the first grand built by the iconic French piano maker in 1820
a concert grand from 1843 and an 1825 square piano
The oldest piece in the collection dates to 1782
built specially for that year's Universal Exhibition in Paris
that Jude loaned to the capital's Grand Palais museum for a recent forum on French innovation
"The press spoke of it in glowing terms (in 1855)
It still has a very good sound," Jude remarks
playing a few notes on the elegant instrument made of rosewood with bronze trim
it was juxtaposed with Pleyel's latest model
a futuristic creation with lid and legs made of carbon fibre -- underscoring the venerable company's evolution from its beginnings as piano maker to Frederic Chopin
I grew up with the idea that obtaining such an instrument was taboo," he said
His first piano lesson from an elderly teacher in 1968 blew the taboo to pieces
Determined to equal her mastery of Mozart's "Turkish March"
the aspiring musician saved up his own money to buy a piano -- unbeknownst to his parents
"I was seriously chewed out when the delivery men arrived
but that consuming passion has stuck with me to this day," he says
willingly lending instruments to record companies or musicians who want to record pieces on period pianos
Among his gems is a piano that once belonged to French president Sadi Carnot
Another is a rosewood Pleyel upright that once belonged to the writer Honore de Balzac's sister Laure Surville
Rare pieces like this could fetch small fortunes
but while admitting to having received some tempting offers
Jude confesses to more than a shade of separation anxiety
"I'm not psychologically prepared to let go of my pianos," he says
He does however dream of founding a museum to house his collection
Passengers on Paris’ metro line E can immerse themselves in the arts and culture of five different continents
thanks to an on-board exhibition displaying works of art
paintings and historical objects from the capital’s Musée du quai Branly
A recent collaboration between French rail operator SNCF and Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac saw train carriages on the city’s underground RER Line E fully decked out in colourful prints depicting over 400 works of art
paintings and objects of the historical collections that can be found in the museum
More than 600sq ft of vinyl film was used across the five carriages
each depicting traditional and telling works of arts originating from North and South America
the ‘Arts and Civilisations’ train took 700 hours of work to complete thanks to 14 specialists from Saint Pierre des Corps Technicentre
the company responsible with the maintenance of the lines
can carry up to 1,300 passengers and serves 22 stations from Haussmann-Saint-Lazare to Chelles-Gournay or Tournan
ornaments and ceremonial or funerary objects help retrace the history of its first indigenous peoples until the birth of cultures African-American
The South-American display explores the journey from pre-hispanic America to present day
the peoples of the Amazonian forest and the costumes of the Bolivian Carnival

The African artwork celebrates both sub-Saharan and North African through a multitude of masks
passengers can observe motifs and objects reminiscing of cultures from Turkey to Japan
The project is not the first of its kind however

which currently operates high-speed trains in France
The Vitesse Classique (classic speed) operation will operate services on the “classic” train lines of SNCF
The routes that the trains will operate will be on the classic lines between:
The service will offer 2 daily round trips on the Paris-Nantes line and 1 daily round trip on the Paris-Lyon line initially
This will scale up to a total of five round trips a day from June
Ouigo Vitesse Classique will offer a single travel class in classic Corail trains
refurbished and sporting Ouigo’s pink and blue livery
with children under 12 paying a fixed fare of €5
Like the tickets for Ouigo high-speed service
Vitesse Classique tickets are sold exclusively online
SNCF Connect and other distribution channels
you’ll get a reserved seat allowed to carry one piece of carry-on luggage
There will be shared power outlets and a selection of snacks for purchase
it is pretty obvious they want to sew up the competition quickly and cannibalise other entrants to the market – such as FlixTrain, Railcoop enter the market
whilst not directly competing with Trenitalia France in this instance – thus keeping passengers on SNCF services
Open access rail operations still appear to be a very limited thing in France
with entrants trying to work out how this market will work
SNCF’s Ouigo Vitesse Classique could make it that bit harder to get a foothold in as they now cover high speed
regional and low-cost long-distance services

Now he’s hooked up to an oxygen tank all the time
I come to Montlouis to get away from everything
we bump into each other in the kitchen when we make our sandwiches and instant noodles
me putting a bit of ham inside a folded-up slice of white bread
You have to get used to this peculiar language
But I think this is the way everyone should love
There are still a lot of Paul’s things here
At first it felt like they belonged to a dead person
I took out the big black leather satchel with my mom’s book of modeling shots inside
I always used to think she looked too made up
too sexual in photos from before she was my mother
I flick through the pages of the books and her beauty smacks me across the face
I guess it would have taken strength to be around her
not everyone can say they had someone like that in their life
He’s probably the only one who really understands my grief
because we both have the same way of loving children
there’s always a moment where he takes his head in his hands
There’s always a moment where it’s Laurent he feels sorry for
And suddenly my mind is flooded with all the images of my dad that I’d forgotten about because they’re so different from everything he is
Sometimes I wonder whether my son will struggle to be a man as much as his father does
drops off a tumbler with his evening medication and sleeping tablets inside
I wonder whether I should talk to him or whether I should just carry on acting as if he were already dead
The guy at the swimming pool didn’t believe me when I went to renew my three-month pass
He thought my birth date was off by a decade
Same thing happened the other day when I answered the Vieux Campeur satisfaction survey
They ticked the 25-35 box without asking me
I say this for the benefit of straight mothers everywhere
You could say that at twenty I was actually forty
I’m messing with the fast-forward and rewind buttons
I’ve always thought adults were bad at acting like adults
I’ve rediscovered the tomboy I was as a child
That’s why it was strange going through all this with Paul by my side
But because part of the new me is about revisiting my childhood
establishing a connection to the me that existed before him
It was like being ten or twelve years old and being his mother at the same time
So maybe that’s why gay people never seem to age

We’re wrapping up the quickest European trip we’ve ever made
Two days of travel for two days of business that still packed in plenty of activities
Arrived at Charles DeGaulle Airport at 8:30 a.m.
vice president of sales and service for TLD America
Fadi outlined TLD’s global initiatives and discussed the reasons why his company invited the press to meet at Chateauroux Airport – a demonstration of TLD’s Taxibot
a towbarless tractor with the engineering prowess to not only push back a plane
but let the pilot essentially command the tractor and not so much be towed as drive the aircraft all the way to the foot of a runway without power from the aircraft’s engines
But witnessing that feat wasn’t going to happen for another 24 hours
We had time to kill and then some since the train that would take us to the Loire Valley wasn’t leaving for another six hours
Maybe not quite what you want to learn after a long
but Fadi had me beat anyway coming all the way from California
and later had an opulent lunch that could only be had when you’re stuck in a French airport
I mean when’s the last time you saw steak tartar on the menu of an airport restaurant
we found ourselves at the train station and took a two-hour ride to St Pierre des Corps where Philippe Tessier
unlocked TLD’s Montlouis sur Loire factory at around 5:30 p.m
One interesting fact: On certain afternoons
town authorities close down the road in front of the factory in order to test drive the some-250 tractors assembled each year
we met TLD executives and Taxibot partners from Lufthansa LEOS and the Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd
more food and espresso before driving an hour to the airport for the big day
I’m writing this on Monday night rather than the usual Tuesday morning since I’ll be heading back to ORD where I might finally get some sleep on Wednesday before
more food and coffee this time on Thanksgiving
remember that “international” is out and “multidomestic” is in
It's the nugget destination for city dwellers looking for a slow life
easy to access for a short weekend that combines style and disconnection
Located 1h10 by TGV from Montparnasse (stop: Saint Pierre des Corps) then 20 minutes by VTC managed by the hotel
appears as a luxurious refuge in the heart of the forest 25 km from the castles of the Loire
Electric cars to guide you around the estate
maps for beautiful hikes and bicycles available..
we cultivate an idea of contemporary luxury
out of sight and the crowd in a concept unique hotelier in France
To perfect this resolutely slow lifestyle: massages
a sublime swimming pool and contemporary art in every corner of the forest with installations by Aurèle
we put our suitcases in luxury lodges as we find them in Scandinavia
All equipped with a jacuzzi and some with a private sauna
is displayed as the promise of communion with the forest from the terraces
here breakfast is served in bed and left at the foot of your cabin
to be brought up via a pulley in a basket full of fresh buns
but also the coffee corner with fireplace and the possibility of squatting in the garden to improvise a lunch or dinner in cocktail mode

Paris is the beating heart of Île-de-France
a region unchanged by the administrative reshuffle in 2016
Thanks to its airports (Charles de Gaulle being the largest) and train stations
it’s a hive of activity for international and domestic travellers alike
In the northwest, it pulls together the former Basse- and Haute-Normandie regions. It takes under two hours by car from Paris to Rouen, Normandy’s capital
At the furthest northwestern reaches of the land, Brittany links with southern England via ferry
It’s also on the TGV line and it takes just under two hours to whizz from Rennes to Paris

Another region to remain steadfast in spite of the country’s recent administrative overhaul, Pays de la Loire sits on the western coast brushing up against the Bay of Biscay
sits on the TGV route and is conveniently positioned a mere two-hour (or just over) train journey from Paris
By far the largest of France’s new super-regions, Nouvelle-Aquitaine in the southwest combines three distinct former regions: Aquitaine
It’s headed by the world-renowned winemaking territory of Bordeaux
which offers a popular high-speed train route to Paris on the LGV L’Océane

A TGV service operates at Toulouse train station
Lyon and Marseille among others; plus Toulouse-Blagnac Airport fl ies all over Europe
Merging the former regions of Alsace, Champagne-Ardenne and Lorraine, Grand Est marks the northeast corner of France
it has plenty of links to its neighbour by air and rail

Rubbing shoulders with Italy is the southeastern segment of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur
Its port city of Marseille can be reached by train

and four airports running domestic and international flights

An OAP got the shock of her life when she woke up and found a car crashed through her living room wall
A deafening noise jolted 70-year-old Claudine out of her sleep around 6 am
She told local media: “I heard a huge bang

She was horrified when she saw that a car with several people inside had crashed through the bay window of her living room

whom I saw coming back later with the police
“Another young man and a young girl got out of the car
It turned out the driver was under the influence of drugs and alcohol
He’d been driving at reckless speed and had failed to brake at a stop sign on Sunday (10 Mar)
The crash left Claudine’s cosy home in sleepy Saint-Pierre-des-Corps
I’ll go see my doctor because I think I need something to calm me down a little.”
the OAP admitted she feels lucky to be alive
“Because I’d bought this sofa bed for my granddaughters

Claudine has since filed a complaint with the police
She’s moved with her daughter in Saint-Avertin as her house gets fixed
She said: “It could take between six and eight months
It’s not the first time Claudine’s house has been hit in the 45 years she’s been living there
it must have been knocked down at least eight times
“We asked the local authorities to do something. They put up a stop sign and a small speed bump
“I used to think I would grow old peacefully in my comfortable house
“And there’s no way I’m letting my granddaughters sleep there.”
