Charles-Irénée Castel, abbé de Saint-Pierre (born Feb. 13, 1658, Saint-Pierre-Église, Fr.—died April 29, 1743, Paris) was an influential French publicist and reformist, one of the first modern European writers to propose an international organization for maintaining peace
Because of the political offense given by his Discours sur la polysynodie (1719; A Discourse of the Danger of Governing by One Minister)
he argued that Louis XIV should not be named “the Great,” Saint-Pierre was dismissed from the French Academy

Ensemble scolaire St Pierre de la Mer is a multi-school campus with 1,100 students aged 5-18 years old located in the coastal town of Saint-Cyprien in the south of France
As part of the national drive to improve student digital skills
the school focuses on STEAM learning — emphasizing science
When St Pierre de la Mer first began its STEAM program
the school’s leaders knew that giving students the right technology would be key to their success
They also believed each student should have their own device — one that was portable
and versatile enough for individualized learning
St Pierre de la Mer began deploying iPad to teachers and students
our middle and high school students are learning the indispensable skills that they’ll need in their professional lives,” says Sandrine Olivier
St Pierre de la Mer’s deputy director of middle and high school
iPad’s built-in apps and features give students learning tools — all in one device
students use Camera to capture the cells they see through their microscopes and then mark up the images in Keynote to annotate their findings
Physics students in Stéphane Calvo’s class observe the motion of rolling objects
and easily create visualizations to locate patterns within their results
allowing us to move around the classroom with our devices so we can give students the right amount of attention,” says Director of Education Stéphane Calvo
With iPad deployed to every middle and high school teacher
educators at St Pierre de la Mer are introducing new
innovative approaches to teaching in the classroom
computer science teachers use Swift Playground on iPad to teach every student from middle school onward how to code
They set weekly challenges to test student understanding
Educators also rely on iPad to help students with different learning styles
students can use whichever tools best support their unique strengths
Visual learners take notes with Pages or Keynote
while auditory learners use Voice Memos to record their thoughts rather than writing them down
and kinesthetic learners use Clips or Freeform to create tactile learning maps
“When students are encouraged to find the tools they need to complete their tasks
they discover new ways to show their learnings
This inspires both educators and pupils and fosters a closer connection between them,” says Calvo
iPad is a vital part of St Pierre de la Mer’s STEAM approach to learning
the school is ensuring all students graduate with a love of learning
equipped with the tools they need to succeed in the future

a self-governing French territory located off the shores of Canada with a population of roughly 6,000
But when US President Donald Trump slammed the steepest tariffs in the world on it during his so-called "Liberation Day" last week
the world's attention turned to the eight-island archipelago
the Trump administration claimed Saint Pierre and Miquelon imposed 99% tariffs on the US
Trump's team took this supposed figure and slashed it in half to reach the "reciprocal" tariff rate of 50% — as a result
for a moment faced the highest tariff rates in the world
“It was a bit surprising to find ourselves public enemy number one all of a sudden
especially given that we are a small territory which has been suffering from inflation“
Overseas and Territories party in the National Assembly
The territory grappled with the prospect of extortionate tariffs
before Trump U-turned on his rate days later
Many remained puzzled about how Trump reached the 50% tariff rate
given that the US Census Bureau archives state that trade with Saint Pierre and Miquelon has been minimal for the past thirty years
"US figures don't include all products from Saint Pierre and Miquelon
which enter the American market through Canada
This means we have virtually no direct contact with the US
apart from the occasional fishery," said Lenormand
as Trump's calculation methods were based solely on 2024 figures
in what was an exceptional year for Saint Pierre and Miquelon in terms of sales
the country received an unprecedentedly large order for halibut fish
which led to exports to the US reaching €3,08 million ($2.84 million)
The Trump administration calculated its tariffs using a simple formula: it divided Washington's trade deficit with a country by its exports to the US
stating that it considers a country's trade imbalance but does not represent actual tariffs imposed on the US
President of the Territorial Council of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon
said that the territory will still "be keeping a close eye on the responses of the European Union and Canada
Just when islanders thought the headlines had subsided
the French nation's eyes turned to them again days later
French National Assembly deputy Laurent Wauquiez argued that foreign nationals under an obligation to leave French territory
should be given two options: either be locked up in Saint Pierre and Miquelon or sent back to their home countries
Wauquiez said he would block any individuals who wished to return to France from the archipelago
Wauquiez's interview with French newspaper JDNews sparked backlash across the country's political spectrum
France's Minister for Overseas Territories Manuel Valls reacted swiftly
stating "no internal campaign should lead a politician ..
to hold a territory of the (French) Republic in contempt."
Apologies don't seem to be an option for Wauquiez
who hopes to be elected as the next president of France's conservative Les Républicains party in upcoming elections
The controversial politician invited his followers to join a Zoom call on Thursday to discuss his proposal
politician Bernard Briand encouraged locals to dial in
Wauquiez acknowledged that local politicians and residents were not happy about his measure
but he stated that "people across France who live next to detention centres aren't thrilled about it either."
"Mr Wauquiez could have mentioned an uninhabited French overseas territory
he had to show such contempt for the local population of Saint Pierre and Miquelon," Briand told Euronews
"I've had a lot of feedback from residents who are outraged that our region is being used as a dumping ground for the problems of the rest of France."
he'll have snow on his head all year round'
Wauquiez said living conditions in Saint Pierre and Miquelon
which is situated off the coast of Canada and experiences harsh winters
"The average temperature is 5 degrees during the year
I think that's going to get everyone thinking pretty quickly," he explained
the MP representing the isles Lenormand asked: "How could people facing an obligation to leave French territory be sent to Saint Pierre and Miquelon
"Our territory has one of the smallest prisons in France
so it would be impossible for us to host hundreds of prisoners," he pointed out
Lenormand remains hopeful that something positive could arise from recent chaos which has surrounded the island
"I am optimistic and want to believe that the focus given to us by Trump and Wauquiez in the space of a week could bring us new businesses and new residents
including some of the diaspora we're trying to bring back," he concluded
“I didn’t know why I would ever come there—was it a pizza place
But it always felt like a restaurant that was for the North Loop neighborhood
not a restaurant that I would drive in to visit
and the sorta-full Snack Bar just wasn’t getting it done
1 restaurant I hear that people miss post-COVID is Burch Steak
Pierre’s steak and dumpling restaurant in Lowry Hill
It made all the sense in the world to try to relaunch some of the spirit of Burch—enter St
Pierre’s menu highlights seafood—which frankly
there’s a major opportunity in our town for that
but since Sea Change evaporated there aren’t many good options
We loved the black cod in crazy water ($24),a beautifully cooked piece of cod in an intensely flavored
I had it last night and I’m still craving it
The menu does keep some Snack Bar classics
like the fried eggplant with rosemary honey ($18)
and the pressed game hen with salsa verde ($28)
And many of the Burch dumplings have made a reappearance
like the Schupfnudeln stuffed with gorgonzola ($19)
and fried semolina dumpling with Parmesan ($15)
We tried a couple starters and both were show-stoppers
The foie gras toast with escargot ($18) was incredible
on a beautiful thick piece of toasted bread topped with four lovely little snails
The mushroom confit with artichokes and Taleggio ($18) gave an almost pasta effect—beautiful flavor and textures
The Niman Ranch steak program is reminiscent of Burch
with a 7- or 14-ounce Hanger serving ($30 or $60)
as well as more traditional 8-ounce bavette ($35)
up to a 6 ounce filet ($75.) Keeping it more simple than the Burch menu
which had grass-fed and corn-finished… this is just part of the overall menu
I think it still hits the mark on being accessible luxury—it’s not cheap
The cocktail program also offers one of my absolute favorite experiences: There’s a choose-your-own-adventure gin and tonic
I loved the Born to be Spicy ($15) with a fresno-infused tequila
and fabulous as you’d expect—I think this is a nice upgrade and reboot to Snack Bar
It scratches the itch of the fond memories of the Burch stans

UFC Hall of Famer Georges St-Pierre is arguably one of the greatest fighters of all time after a legendary career inside the Octagon. But his success likely wouldn’t’ve produced the same results without his star-studded team at Tristar Gym, led by top-tier coach Firas Zahabi
Zahabi is known for his unorthodox training methods and slew of top talent he’s helped grow inside the gym, including his younger brother Aiemann, who returns at UFC 315 later this month against Jose Aldo
not all of his techniques have been learned and perfected solely inside the gym’s walls
Actor Keanu Reeves is one of the most successful action stars to hit the big screen
after memorable performances in ‘The Matrix’ and the ‘John Wick’ movie franchise
His movies are known to include high-octane drama and action
and he’s trained in some martial arts during his film career to pull off his own stunts
one of Reeves’s on-screen techniques came from Tristar
During a recent upload to the Tristar Gym YouTube channel
I used to rush people punching and kicking and then whenever they would grab a hold of me
it appears Zahabi’s claims aren’t from a hostile side
and Reeves hasn’t responded to Zahabi’s remarks
Reeves has attended several high-profile UFC events
including multiple International Fight Week cards in Las Vegas
As Zahabi prepares his brother and other gym members for their upcoming fights, St-Pierre remains sidelined from combat sports, and a fighting return is unlikely. But St-Pierre keeps a keen eye on what’s happening in MMA, including the ongoing Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall saga
Since Jones defended the UFC heavyweight title in November, discussions of a potential super fight with Aspinall haven’t slowed down. Aspinall is the UFC’s longest-reigning interim titleholder, stemming from his knockout win over Sergei Pavlovich at UFC 295

A mother who gave birth on a New York City subway car on Wednesday has been identified as a missing Florida woman
Jenny Saint Pierre, 25, had been missing since August of last year, the Hallandale Beach Police Department said on X
The missing person alert said Saint Pierre was pregnant "and may be in need of services that meet the criteria of an endangered person."
The NYPD responded to a 911 call at the 34th Street-Herald Square station at around 11:35 a.m
the NYPD Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information (DCPI) told Newsweek
Responding officers learned that a 25-year-old female gave birth on a northbound W train
Passengers told the conductor to stop the train and called 911
Another passenger used a pocket knife to cut the umbilical cord
Saint Pierre had been missing since August 5
she was last seen by her ex-boyfriend at Gulfstream Park
A law enforcement official identified Saint Pierre as the woman who gave birth on a W train, according to New York Times
confirmed the mother's identity to the outlet after seeing a video of the birth on social media
Stephania previously told CBS Miami that she had not heard from her sister in weeks
"Something's not right," she told the outlet
Stephania said Jenny's ex-boyfriend told her that he had gotten into an argument with Jenny prior to her disappearance
"He told me that they had an argument — a disagreement — and then she was angry and she left," she said
in a statement to WABC: "This is another example of New Yorkers coming together to help each other
assisted by caring transit workers and other responders
reflecting the best of the subway community and this city
We are thrilled that both mother and Baby W are doing well
and look forward to welcoming both of them back aboard for a lifetime of reliable—and hopefully less dramatic—rides."
Officials said the woman is "conscious and alert." The woman and her baby were both taken to NYC Health and Hospital/Bellevue in good health

I was captivated by an exchange student from what sounded to be an exotic French island territory called Saint-Pierre
Imagine my surprise when I learned she spoke perfect English and even had a bit of a twang in her voice a la The Rock
Her English teacher was from Newfoundland, she told me. That’s how I learned about Saint Pierre et Miquelon and when I saw the title for the CBC TV show Saint-Pierre
I imagine a good number of folks will do a similar double-take as well
Joséphine Jobert and Allan Hawco keep a tiny French territory safe from crime in Saint-Pierre
The story: disgraced Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Inspector Donny Fitzpatrick is remanded to the island of Saint Pierre via a police transfer for arresting the premier of Newfoundland
the matter is further complicated by the fact that the premier is in a romantic relationship with Fitz’s wife
Fitz has to contend with culture shock and a new police force
Fitz is played by Allan Hawco. A supreme Canadian talent, he will always be remembered for Republic of Doyle which makes it easy for this show’s audience to accept him as Inspector Fitzpatrick
It’s a natural fit and is a good example of an actor playing to his strengths
there are a few noticeable differences between Fitz and Hawco’s other roles
He isn’t the tough guy we usually associate him with
and he’s well aware of his age as a 20-year veteran cop
But he plays the role well and it’s a testament to his versatility
Likewise, Joséphine Jobert is a thoroughly welcomed new face to Canadian Television
As Deputy Chief Genevieve “Arch” Archembault
a Parisian transplant to the tiny French colonial possession
she knows when to play tough and when to be a friend
Her character’s immediate resentment of Fitz’s arrival to the island starts the characters off on even footing: she doesn’t want Fitz there and neither does he
The chemistry is solid and it sets the audience up for a show based on mutual antipathy
The characters must work to earn each others’ respect just as they have to earn the audience’s
Adding to the fun, there are also underlying storylines that get a bit of attention in each episode. Pay attention to the Irish villain, Sean Gallagher (James Purefoy) who we meet as the island’s local “godfather”
This pairs wonderfully with the background stories about both Fitz and Arch that are yet to be uncovered
The island of Saint-Pierre takes centre stage as a character in its own right
The island isn’t really known to the majority of Canadians
Though it’s just off the coast and to the south of Newfoundland
it’s a part of the Canadian diaspora nonetheless
on Newfoundland culture and even the way French is pronounced
the background looks more like a quaint village in the French countryside than an Atlantic coastal town
they all speak English and many of the goods and sundries come from their Canadian neighbours
Each episode is like a visit to the island
Saint-Pierre is an entertaining 50-minute cop drama set in a novel location that’s engaging and a fine example of a solid Canadian television production
It’s a fun and engaging series that has the potential to do well with a homegrown audience
it’ll probably do better overseas than it does at home
but remember: this isn’t a Canadian series

Few men are better equipped to offer advice about fighting at the Bell Center than the former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion
Some of the best nights in the incredible career of ‘Rush’ came inside the iconic venue including UFC 83 where St-Pierre avenged his shocking loss to Matt Serra
Despite St-Pierre leaving the door open for a comeback, he won’t be competing on May 10 but he will be trying to help Aiemann Zahabi secure the biggest win of his career against fellow legend Jose Aldo
St-Pierre has given Zahabi some interesting advice
of which the Canadian-born contender has since revealed
In a recent exclusive interview with Bloody Elbow, Aiemann Zahabi spoke about the advice that Georges St-Pierre had for him ahead of UFC 315
who has won five in a row to earn the #14-ranking at 135-pounds
has previously earned high praise from his Tristar teammate after putting together the best run of his career at 37-years-old
He revealed in the interview that one of the first things he did after being offered the fight was to call St-Pierre who immediately passed on some words of wisdom
‘GSP’ was able to use his own experiences of coming up against a high-profile opponent and the mistakes that he made so that Zahabi can avoid falling down the same pitfalls
Zahabi said: “I wanted to be the first one to tell him about Aldo so I called him up right away as soon as we said yes and he told me that he’s only human
The biggest mistake I can do is to put him on a pedestal and that he bleeds
he’s like you but that doesn’t mean he’s not beatable
“I think the first time GSP fought Matt Hughes
he put Matt Hughes on a pedestal and he was basically explaining to me to not do that with this opportunity
Just to go in there and fight him like I would fight.”
it would be impossible for a competitor like Aiemann Zahabi to have not a tremendous amount of respect for Jose Aldo after everything the Brazilian legend has accomplished
It’s so impossible to avoid showering the former UFC featherweight champion with praise that even the Canadian fighter’s own supporters have fallen victim to it
Zahabi laughed as he told Bloody Elbow that when he announced the news
even his own inner circle made sure to have Aldo’s back
he has such a fan base than even like friends of mine or like acquaintances
‘listen we want you to win but don’t hurt him too bad’
“The guy is coming to rip my head off and I’m coming to rip his face off
Saint Pierre and Miquelon is a self-governing territorial overseas collectivity of France in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean
located near the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador
It is an archipelago of eight islands and its residents are French citizens
A good cop who uncovers corruption is exiled to remote French territory where he discovers yet more criminal activity
Like a sexy "Death in Paradise" (with French star Josephine Jobert in both) but set in the North Atlantic
"Saint-Pierre" is a Canadian police drama with an incredible cast that has already got people outside the Great White North talking
Allan Hawk is the charming Sergeant Donny "Fitz" Fitzpatrick
Jobert is the Deputy Chief and James Purefoy stars as Gallagher
"Fitz" has been exiled to Saint-Pierre et Miquelon just of he coast of Newfoundland for getting too close to solving a corruption scandal - so we know he's a good cop in at least two senses of the word - but if he was expecting a quite life he can think again
There's an assassin and a decapitation in just the first three episodes
There are a few familiar tropes (including the powerful female police chief who is initially suspicious but then warms to the outsider
the tough guy's appealing vulnerability - he doesn't "do heights") but this is a well-made
fast-paced series set in a beautiful location with plenty to commend it
See below for the trailer and keep reading to discover how to watch "Saint-Pierre" online and from anywhere
"Saint-Pierre" premiered on Monday, January 6 at 9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT on CBC and is also available to stream for free on CBC Gem in Canada

Allan Hawco and Josephine Jobert appear in CBC's Saint Pierre
which is set on the French overseas collectivity of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.DERM CARBERRY/CBC
Saint-Pierre and Miquelon has long been on my bucket list
an archipelago an hour-and-a-half ferry ride away from Fortune
is an odd little remnant of New France in the Gulf of St Lawrence
I don’t expect I’m going to make it there any time soon – so I’ve been eager to travel there through the new CBC cop show Saint Pierre since seeing the first moody promo shots
The spot seemed a promising setting for an original
having a built-in history of skulduggery such as smuggling during prohibition and Nazi collaboration during the Second World War
a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary inspector assigned to work with the Saint Pierre police.DERM CARBERRY/CBC
is a generic and goofy procedural put in front of a unique backdrop it rarely glances over its shoulder at
There’s some enticingly European establishing drone shots of brightly coloured buildings lining narrow streets – but
everything is familiar and the particularities of place and culture are treated as obstacles to avoid
Saint Pierre stars a couple of telegenic veterans of island-investigation shows that had a little more vim and vigour
a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary inspector reassigned to work with the Saint Pierre police for extremely convoluted reasons
previously played a PI with panache on Republic of Doyle
plays Saint Pierre’s deputy police chief Arch – a Parisian transplant whose middle initial and last name
The French actress was previously a detective sergeant on seven seasons of Death in Paradise
a crime dramedy set on a fictional British outpost with French colonial history
so she certainly knows the overseas territory
But it’ll be hard for viewers of Saint Pierre – which was created by Hawco
and sees Hawco and Lord-Stafford share the role of showrunner – to get over the hump of the poorly structured first episode
After an unnecessary flash-forward to Fitz bleeding on a gurney
the reasons for his exile are outlined in a brief
It has something to do with him arresting the premier of Newfoundland
who’s dating his ex-wife and living with his kids
Fitz’s actual arrival in Saint Pierre is consumed by a bit about him suffering from seasickness – and dialogue focusing on the eye-rolling reasons why everyone on the French island will be speaking English with varying degrees of decipherability almost all the time
Saint Pierre’s creators seem concerned that viewers will tune out not just if there’s too many subtitles
but if there’s not a case of the week right away
So Fitz doesn’t even get a tour of his new police HQ before a cult leader and local crime kingpin get into a fight in the centre of it
and Fitz and Arch – who you’ll be surprised to learn are initially at odds with one another – are investigating
the form of Saint Pierre comes into focus in the second episode: an outlandish crime of the week
cliché banter and a little chipping away at an overarching plot involving Saint Pierre’s big baddie
played by a British actor whose face you’ll eventually place putting on an Irish accent
French actress Josephine Jobert plays Saint Pierre’s deputy police chief Arch
a Parisian transplant to the island territory.DERM CARBERRY/CBC
There will be assassins whose perspectives we see through cheesy crosshairs and sequences expensively underscored by Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy (despite the song now being more associated with cartoon animals than the “mature subject matter” CBC warns about here
Episodes will end with the police team – a diverse bunch of actors filling out two-dimensional roles – having a pint of beer or a shot of tequila at the pub
but Saint Pierre lacks the true sense of fun that you found on Hawco Productions’ previous big CBC venture
but its unwasted setting and joie de vivre made it an enjoyable romp
up-for-it Jobert seems to be having a good time on Saint Pierre
Hawco shows little spirit and at times looks like he’s going to nod off in the middle of a scene
This is partly about the character he’s playing: Fitz is a middle-aged man who has lost his wife and kids and is lonely in exile
Hawco also seems to want to remain a hot-stuff lead
rather than lean into his journey toward his Slow Horses years
A sleepwalking subplot means he wanders around in his underwear at least once an episode
and there’s a recurring bit where a twentysomething female police officer openly ogles him
saying things such as: “Il est trop chaud.”
Hawco could absolutely anchor a detective drama with some real darkness
as anyone whose seen his work on stage can attest
But his new procedural makes Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent look like prestige TV

sales at Snack Bar were lagging on weeknights
they still had customers mourning the COVID-era closing of another popular restaurant
Their solution: combine the best of both Burch and Snack Bar while adding some seafood items. And the result is the brand new St. Pierre Steak & Seafood in the space where Snack Bar used to be
Pierre said at the grand opening March 11th
“We’re actually seeing old regulars from Burch the first night so that’s really awesome.”
The interior is virtually unchanged while the menu now features seven steaks
20 seafood items and several of the most popular items from Snack Bar’s menu
“We got to design this space when it opened (as Snack Bar) so it felt fine to just keep it the same,” St
“Everyone tells me it’s more like a steakhouse than it was a snack bar—the coloring in the booths and stuff
so maybe it was just meant to be this.”
It was a very quick turnaround to make the transition
Snack Bar closed March 1st and the new restaurant welcomed its first guests ten days later
and then we had two new ovens brought in and a char grill,” St

“I got tricked,” she said with a laugh

What he achieved during his time at the top is hard to match and though people have dreamed of seeing GSP return against the likes of Khabib Nurmagomedov for many years
Another total guarantee for any greatest of all time list is the UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones who has been the subject of criticism for some time
Fans have made it clear that they want to see Jones step inside the Octagon with Tom Aspinall to unify the heavyweight titles in what would be the biggest fight of the year
the fight that many believe will truly test ‘Bones’ at this weight class feels like it could be one of the few big UFC matchups that fail to materialize
In an exclusive interview with Bloody Elbow, Georges St-Pierre shared his thoughts on the fight that is top of most wish lists for 2025
Jon Jones has made it very clear that he isn’t overly interested in the matchup
so if the UFC wants him to unify the belts
This certainly isn’t an unreasonable approach considering the risk versus reward in taking this fight instead of riding off into the sunset without being beaten inside the Octagon
St-Pierre is on the same page as many fans in that whilst he believes that ‘Bones’ is the greatest of all time, the younger and hungrier Tom Aspinall is still a legitimate threat which is what makes the matchup so exciting
The interim champion certainly has more to gain but seeing the best to ever do it take on the new face of the heavyweight division creates a lot of interesting narratives
St-Pierre says that the fight taking place will come down to where Jones’ motivation is at and whether the UFC will match his asking price for one of the biggest heavyweight clashes in the history of the sport
Jon Jones is probably the best fighter that ever lived,” he said
“If I have to choose someone in his prime that I put in the coliseum
nobody beats time and Tom Aspinall is on a hell of a run so it’s to see how they’re gonna match
I would really like to see this fight but I think Tom is very hungry and it’s up to Jon to see if he still wants to do this and if the UFC can compensate him good because I think he deserves it so it’s going to be a hell of a fight.”
When listing off his favorite fighters to watch on the current UFC roster
Georges St-Pierre named the likes of Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall because he likes to learn from the best
Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria also fell into that bracket with their potential matchup being another fight that could define the UFC calendar in 2025
Topuria is sticking to his guns by stating that he’s happy to wait for his title shot whilst it’s still up in the air as to whether Makhachev will move up to welterweight in the coming months
St-Pierre is fascinated by the clash of styles as arguably the top two active fighters in the sport today cross paths with gold on the line
Bud Light is giving Canadians a chance to raise a gold one with the launch of its UFC Gold Edition can which is infused with Gold from Georges St-Pierre’s UFC championship belt
Allan Hawco’s Republic of Doyle entertained viewers on CBC
The fast-paced detective drama was set in and around St
John’s and spotlit the unique island community through the eyes of Jake Doyle and his co-workers
Now Hawco is back and spotlighting another island community
Robina Lord-Stafford and Perry Chafe—boasts the humour
heart and unique environs that are Hawco’s bread and butter
At the centre of the series is its two lead characters
Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Inspector Donny “Fitz” Fitzpatrick (Hawco) finds himself banished to Saint-Pierre et Miquelon—the French territory of 6,000 nestled in the Atlantic Ocean—after digging too deeply into illegal activity surrounding a local politician (played by Eric Johnson)
who happens to be married to Fitz’s ex-wife (Vanessa Matsui)
Fitz is partnered with Deputy Chief Genevieve “Arch” Archambault (Joséphine Jobert)
There are some fish-out-of-water moments for Fitz in the first episode—he not only suffers from sea sickness (bad news when you’re working on a small island) and a fear of heights—not to mention struggling with the language barrier (luckily
Fitz understands French better than he speaks it)
Rounding out the main cast are Benz Antoine
Jean-Michel Le Gal and James Purefoy as the big bad in Season 1
Much of Monday’s debut sets up the people and their world
brightly painted wood homes dot the coast of Saint-Pierre while older stone buildings stand sentry inland
Hawco revealed during a recent interview that he was on a location scout for fellow CBC/Hawco Productions project Son of a Critch when he visited the island
and knew it should be the setting for his next series
He had written two pilot projects and Saint-Pierre was the perfect fit for one
“One [idea] was very close to what this show is
the very notion of these two partners who were thrust together by fate
and unwilling partners who didn’t know they needed each other until now,” he says
Eagle-eyed fans of Death in Paradise will quickly identify Jobert
who portrayed Detective Sergeant Florence Cassell from 2015 to 2024 on the veteran British series
The chemistry Jobert has with Hawco is instantaneous and undeniable and is a huge part of why Saint-Pierre works so well
“She’s my favourite type of person and actor,” Hawco says
She’s also totally flexible to go with anything in the moment
She’s practical about what the technical requirements of the job are while keeping a fluidity and an absolute freshness and spontaneity to her work

Saint Pierre and Miquelon (Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon)
a French archipelago of two islands located in North America about twenty-five kilometers off the coast of Newfoundland
is the last remaining vestige of the former Viceroyalty of New France (which encompassed parts of what are now Canada and the United States
it became a headache for the Allies when World War II broke out and the French mainland was occupied by the Germans
as the local administration remained loyal to the Vichy government
This is why De Gaulle ordered its conquest at the end of 1941
The Portuguese navigator João Álvares Fagundes discovered the archipelago around 1520
the Frenchman Jacques Cartier renamed it Saint Pierre Island in honor of the patron saint of fishermen
Those waters proved to be extraordinarily rich and attracted numerous cod and whaling ships
especially Basque-French ones from Saint-Jean-de-Luz
who named the second island Miquelon (Mikeleune)
which has been known by various names throughout history and is now connected to the latter by a sand isthmus
The wealth of these fishing grounds attracted the British
who expelled the French for half a century after the Treaty of Utrecht
until the Treaty of Paris restored the archipelago in exchange for the surrender of mainland New France
History repeated itself decades later during the American Revolution (which involved French collaboration)
and the islands changed hands several times until they finally remained French during Napoleon’s era
as interest in the archipelago had waned due to the decline in fishing
the so-called Second Armistice of Compiègne was signed
whereby Nazi Germany and the French Third Republic ended hostilities
leaving France divided into two parts: one in the north and west (including the Atlantic coast)
occupied and directly administered by the Germans
and another in the south governed by a new regime loyal to Hitler
which was granted control of non-European territories
Saint Pierre and Miquelon were placed under the latter
The local authority was represented by the current Administrateur
supported by Admiral Georges Robert as High Commissioner and Commander-in-Chief of the Western Atlantic (which
It should be noted that some of these territories
rejected the terms of the armistice on the grounds that it had been signed under duress
the administrator kept Saint Pierre and Miquelon loyal to the regime led by Marshal Pétain since July 1940
which concerned both Canada and the United States because the islands housed a radio station and were connected to Europe via transatlantic cables
creating the possibility of providing German submarines with weather conditions
in addition to supplying fish to Germany through France
such as the provincial government of Newfoundland and Labrador
which in turn recommended discussing it first with Canada
The Canadian War Cabinet dismissed the idea
as it conflicted with the traditional Monroe Doctrine
despite also distrusting what Administrator De Bournat might do under Vichy orders
Admiral Georges Robert signed a personal agreement with Admiral John W
regulating U.S.-French West Indies relations based on maintaining the status quo in the region
Although it was an informal personal pact not officially signed
there was a confirmation negotiated by Robert with another admiral
Saint Pierre and Miquelon were too close to the strategically significant mouth of the Saint Lawrence River for Canadians to accept such a vague arrangement
could afford it because it remained neutral at the time
as it had the status of a free member of the British Commonwealth of Nations following the 1926 Balfour Declaration and the 1931 Statute of Westminster
and it declared war on Germany on September 10
the Canadian government initially chose not to intervene in the French archipelago out of respect for its American neighbor
the actions of the Kriegsmarine reached its waters
the Permanent Joint Board on Defense Canada-United States
under the Ogdensburg Agreement (signed by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King for mutual defense)
defined the position of Saint Pierre and Miquelon as a potential danger
Roosevelt continued to oppose intervention
as he mistrusted the annexationist ambitions that Canada had always expressed regarding Saint Pierre and Miquelon—an argument also used by Vichy
appointed by De Gaulle as head of the FNFL (Forces Navales Françaises Libres) and provisional commander of the air force
sentenced to death in absentia by the Vichy regime
asserted that the archipelago’s radio station was collaborating with German U-boats
This made it necessary to take action in some form
Canadian Secretary of State Norman Robertson informed U.S
Ambassador Moffat that infiltrated agents on the archipelago would need to monitor all messages sent and received to stay prepared
the United States remained opposed to interventionism and expressed disapproval of a plan to occupy the islands by parachute; Mackenzie King had to order its cancellation
Admiral Muselier persisted and proposed a landing
The proposal was raised on December 12 during a meeting in Halifax
with representatives of the Canadian and U.S
The latter insisted on rejecting any such proposal
but Muselier had orders from De Gaulle to proceed with the invasion
which is why the admiral had traveled in command of a small fleet comprising the submarine Surcouf and the corvettes Mimosa
Although Muselier preferred to act with consensus and try to convince the Americans
had an ace up their sleeve: Winston Churchill’s unofficial consent
the French flotilla departed from the port of Halifax on what was announced as a mere training mission
Rear Admiral of the Royal Canadian Navy and its theoretical superior
It arrived at Saint Pierre at three in the morning on the 24th
landing its 230 armed sailors; in twenty minutes
they took control of the island without firing a single shot
as the only resistance they faced was a handful of gendarmes
Georges de Bournat was deposed and arrested; Admiral Robert was not
as he had long since aligned with Free France (in 1947
partially exonerated him of the charge of collaborationism
arguing that his loyalty to Vichy had been merely formal
with favorable testimony from the Americans)
a referendum was organized among the island’s population
in which an overwhelming majority (over 98%) voted to join Free France as well
Ensign Alain Savary, who would later become a socialist and anti-colonialist politician and serve as Minister of National Education in 1981, was placed in charge of the local government. Captain Roger Birot, a hero of Dunkirk and commander of the First Corvette Division
was left in provisional command of the archipelago’s navy
one of the first overseas French territories to join Free France against Vichy and the Nazi regime
Everything had ended happily for the Allies
although the United States did not hide its displeasure over an operation carried out without its permission
Secretary of State Cordell Hull made a public statement on December 25 that was clearly critical: The action undertaken by three so-called Free French ships at Saint Pierre and Miquelon was an arbitrary act
contrary to the agreement of all interested parties
the violation of the Monroe Doctrine was once again invoked
and the invasion was even compared to the aggressions carried out by the Germans and Japanese—something that surprised Churchill
who considered it disproportionate to the modest scale of the episode
having declared war on Japan on December 8 and on Germany on December 11
Roosevelt could never entirely dispel his mistrust of De Gaulle in the years to come

What Georges St-Pierre accomplished in his career is nothing short of remarkable with his achievements standing the test of time long after he hung up the gloves
His welterweight title reign, where St-Pierre lost and regained the belt following a shock upset
is the stuff of legend having recorded nine consecutive defenses from 2008 to 2013
‘Rush’ even returned to the Octagon in 2017 after a four-year hiatus where he won the middleweight belt at UFC 217 though Michael Bisping would eventually get some revenge of his own over St-Pierre
Health issues and injuries have kept the 43-year-old away from one final outing but that doesn’t mean that he is drawing a line under this for good
Georges St-Pierre was preparing for a return to competition that would have seen him lock horns with one of his greatest rivals one more time
The former welterweight and middleweight champion announced during International Fight Week ahead of UFC 290 that he’d be competing at the UFC Fight Pass Invitational on December 14th with Nick Diaz later being named as his planned opponent
injuries to both Diaz and St-Pierre prevented the grappling match from taking place with the Quebec native requiring shoulder surgery
it became clear that the matchup wasn’t going to be rescheduled but in a recent exclusive interview with Bloody Elbow
‘Rush’ stated that something along these lines could bring him back out of retirement
St-Pierre claims that whilst his days of stepping inside the Octagon are firmly behind him
he’d be more than happy to compete in grappling under the right circumstances
I mean I would never fight again in mixed martial arts
“I still like to compete but for different reasons
After returning to the Octagon at UFC 217 where he submitted Michael Bisping to win the middleweight title
Georges St-Pierre vacated the belt just over a month later
His official retirement came in 2019 with the former champion later going into more detail about why his comeback was cut extremely short
St-Pierre developed ulcerative colitis after forcing his body to put on weight for his middleweight return which forced him to take some time away to try and heal his body
he gave a promising update about his health now that 2017 is far behind in the rear-view mirror
I was on heavy medication and everything with the stress
I decided to retire and now I feel better than ever
I found ways that I no longer have any symptoms and I’m healthy.”
To celebrate UFC 315 on May 10, Bud Light is giving Canadians a chance to raise a gold one with the launch of its UFC Gold Edition can, which is infused with Gold from Georges St-Pierre’s UFC championship belt
Georges St-Pierre experienced plenty of highs
during his legendary career in the UFC Octagon
St-Pierre bounced back from both by tearing through the UFC’s welterweight division on the road to several title reigns
Fast forward to the UFC’s modern era, and the UFC’s biggest heavyweight fight remains in limbo as Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall continue to negotiate a potential showdown later this year
Aspinall has held the interim heavyweight belt for almost two full years without a booked shot at the undisputed championship against Jones or another top heavyweight
As Aspinall’s frustration regarding Jones’s hiatus continues
St-Pierre recommends a unique approach to the growing heavyweight division uncertainty
During a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show
St-Pierre was asked how he’d move forward as Aspinall waits for a Jones fight booking
he needs to focus on the next task,” St-Pierre said of Aspinall
I was making the mistake of thinking about Matt Serra and trying to get my rematch immediately
But I had multiple fights before that…and if he’s only focusing on Jon Jones
It’s a distraction…the things that need to be done will be done
I’d love to see this fight,” St-Pierre continued
“Because in terms of legacy and accomplishment
And I understand Tom’s point of view that he’s a proud fighter and he wants to be the best
but now it’s all dependent on what Jon wants to do
if he still wants to do this and if he’s compensated fairly…it all plays [a role]
“So Tom shouldn’t focus on [Jon] because it’s outside of his control
and he’s wasting a lot of energy focusing on that
but he needs to self-hypnotize himself to focus on the next thing and be hungry about the next task.”
After meeting with UFC CBO Hunter Campbell last month, Aspinall expressed supreme optimism regarding his Octagon return. Jones hasn’t fought since finishing Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in November
Aspinall defended the interim belt last July against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304, finishing Blaydes in the first round. He remains unbeaten in his UFC tenure with recent knockouts of Sergei Pavlovich, Marcin Tybura, and Serghei Spivac
UFC CEO Dana White remains ‘super confident’ that the Jones vs. Aspinall fight will come to fruition later this year
He called recent rumors that the fight was off the table ‘b—–‘
and insisted that the matchup remains at the top of the UFC’s wish list
In light of St-Pierre’s comments about Aspinall, the interim titleholder acknowledged that the wait for Jones might be a blessing in disguise
Aspinall shared he’s dealt with several health issues in recent months as he waits for his Octagon return booking
One of Jones’s former rivals encouraged him to ‘walk away’ from the Aspinall fight and retire. Vitor Belfort nearly handed Jones a loss during the height of the latter’s UFC light heavyweight title reign
Aspinall is unlikely for the UFC’s International Fight Week event
it could potentially take place late-summer or early Fall
the wait continues for one of the biggest fights in UFC history

TORONTO - After CBC’s “Republic of Doyle” wrapped in 2014
Allan Hawco spent years searching for the next show to create
had several ideas but couldn’t land on a concept that resonated with him
Plus the return of “Severance,” “Yellowjackets” and “Wolf Hall,” a menopause comedy and Jon Hamm
“There were things I was developing and I was interested in… but you knew in the back of your mind it wasn’t really right,” says the Newfoundland native during an interview in Toronto
He knew he wanted to make another procedural because it’s a genre he feels at home in as a writer
“It just feels very familiar and within the confines of what that structure requires
There’s so much freedom of expression.”
But he didn’t want to rehash old ideas
“I wanted it to be fresh and I wanted it to speak to me.”
It wasn’t until Hawco scouted Saint Pierre and Miquelon for an episode of CBC comedy “Son of a Critch,” which he executive produces
“I had forgotten what the magic of Saint Pierre was,” says Hawco of the French archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean near Newfoundland
where he filmed his first leading role in the 2004 drama “Making Love in St
“It’s kind of a cousin to Newfoundland — it’s its own place
It truly is one of the most unique and special places I’ve ever been
The day that we landed there for that scout
The visit planted the seed for “Saint-Pierre,” Hawco’s new CBC police procedural
The drama stars Hawco as Inspector Donny “Fitz” Fitzpatrick
a Newfoundland cop whose relentless investigation into a corrupt politician gets him reassigned to Saint Pierre and Miquelon
he’s thrown into an uneasy alliance with Deputy Chief Genevieve “Arch” Archambault
a Parisian transplant played by French actor Joséphine Jobert
they uncover the crimes hidden beneath the islands’ picturesque exterior
(dealing) with things we see every day — but Saint Pierre
there’s nothing like it,” says Jobert
who also played a detective in the BBC crime dramedy “Death in Paradise.”
Hawco says besides Saint Pierre’s idyllic environs
he and co-creators Robina Lord-Stafford and Perry Chafe were drawn to the way the islands act as a link between North America and Europe
And although in reality the crime rate on the islands is low
his creative mind turned it into an ideal setup for international criminals
“If you were able to have a hold of some kind of international network
if you were able to be a part of corruption — there are so many safeguards in the real-life Saint Pierre to not allow that to happen
what would it be like if those safeguards weren’t there?” he says
“If the local police force could be corrupt
if there was a person who could be the big bad in town and actually be able to use international shipping routes and flights to be able to smuggle and do bad things?”
Hawco says “Saint-Pierre” has a darker tone and higher-stakes crimes than “Republic of Doyle,” which often leaned into comedy
I’m not playing some roguish guy with a car chasing bad guys
I think I would feel quite foolish if that was something I was presenting for myself right now
unless that in itself was the joke,” he explains
And he’s lived quite a full life that he’s having to deal with from a character perspective.”
was produced by Hawco Productions in association with U.S
Hawco and Jobert say there hasn’t been a show of this scale filmed in Saint Pierre before
“I liked the fact that they didn’t change the way they were living just for us,” says Jobert
noting how local coffee shops kept their regular hours
even with an 80-person crew working nearby in the early morning
with some even offering their homes to crew members due to a lack of available hotel rooms
“People moved out and rented us their homes,” he says
“Saint-Pierre” premieres Monday

Among the countries hardest hit by new US tariffs announced by Donald Trump on Wednesday are unusual ones - the small African nation of Lesotho and the French autonomous territory of Saint Pierre et Miquelon, which both now have a 50 percent tariff placed on all exports to the US
It's not quite as funny as the tariff placed on the Heard and McDonald islands - inhabited exclusively by penguins - but it's still an unusual choice
As you could be forgiven for having never heard of Saint Pierre et Miquelon
The territory consists of two islands around 12km off Canada's Atlantic coast
Their total area is roughly 25 square kilometres and just under 6,000 people live there
The official language of the islands is French
France has a variety of overseas territories stretching from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean
like the Caribbean islands of Martinique and Gaudeloupe are 'overseas départements'
which are officially part of France and have the same status as mainland areas like Dordogne or Brittany
Others have a looser relationship with Paris
Saint Pierre et Miquelon is a "collectivité d'outre-mer" - these are French territories
but they have their own local government structure and can pass their own laws - apart from on certain subjects such as defence
which is reserved to the government in Paris
It has the same status as French Polynesia
the Pacific islands of Wallis and Fortuna and the Caribbean islands of Saint Martin and Saint Barthelemy
Why does France own two tiny islands off Canada
France's slightly bizarre collection of overseas territories are all the result of historical colonial enterprise or empire-building
Confetti of an empire: France's overseas territories explained
The French initially colonised parts of what is now Canada - which is why some parts remain French-speaking - and Saint Pierre et Miquelon is one of the last remnants of French colonial presence in North America
The only time the guillotine was ever used in North America was in Saint-Pierre in the late 1800s
A man named Joseph Néel was convicted of murder and he was executed in 1889
The islands had a big moment in international trade when Prohibition was in force in the USA - as a French territory they were not affected by the law and smuggling became a huge business
with an estimated 300,000 crates of alcohol
passing through the islands and into the USA
it's been downhill in international trade terms and the principle modern industries are fishing and tourism - although around one third of the island's residents are French public sector employees
It's not entirely clear why Trump singled them out for such a high tariff rate - unless he fell for the April Fool run by the French TV station France Info on Tuesday
The joke article - known as a poisson d'avril in French - outlined a plan for France to start manufacture of César heavy guns for the French army in Saint Pierre et Miquelon
that the tiny islands have nowhere near the industrial capacity for such a thing to be possible
as well as it being obviously impractical to ship over materials and then ship back the guns

the breakfast price-setting stopped and the U.S
You get the sense something not too far from Roosevelt’s lucky-number numerology was going on at the White House last week as Donald Trump and his advisers huddled in the Oval Office to decide exactly how high his long-threatened “reciprocal” tariffs would be
Roosevelt himself adopted that policy in 1934 and it kicked off 90 years of liberalization
And there are standard data sources for how high different countries’ tariffs and non-tariff barriers are that could guide you in deciding how high your own “reciprocal tariffs” should be
But it’s entirely novel economics to say we’ll take your trade surplus with us
divide that by two (just to be kind) and that’s what we’re going to charge you at our border
for it complains that many other countries consume a much lower share of their GDP
those that do save more need places to invest and the U.S
is (or at least was until last week) an obvious haven for investors
with virtually no exports to the United States — was going to look really stupid
Pounding it for its teeny-tiny trade surplus with the U.S
— which a lot of data sets don’t even show — mainly makes Trump and friends look ridiculous
World stock markets’ all-thumbs-down response to the tariffs reflects two factors: distress at the tariffs themselves
When the world’s biggest player decides to turn the world economy upside down and inside out
But also the realization that it’s amateur hour in the White House
The supposedly stable genius running the show doesn’t look either stable or genius at the moment
The administration’s apparent delight that after the Rose Garden show more than 50 countries have been calling
The implicit message that deals are the objective
not a violent remaking of the world’s industrial structure
But who trusts the clearly careless people who generated the tariffs to strike 50 sensible liberalizing deals all at once
In his relationships with weaker countries
The world laughing at his penguin tariffs isn’t a good look for him

Pierre commemorates her life growing up with her late mother
“It’s lovely to die together,” grips the reader from the start
“If I could turn her into a psychological study
the possibilities of her coursing through my veins driving down the I-5 of my dreams.”
shortly after she set fire to her own home
Learning about her mother’s act forever shifted how St
Her mother’s burning came at the end of an eight-year period of Vietnamese monks self-immolating
and so this act of spiritual protest was in the ether in the 1970s
In the few years after my first conversation with St
there have been three documented self-immolation attempts as protest against the war and genocide in Gaza
one cannot help but think how wild it is that its birth is during a period in history when self-immolation is once more an active part of our collective consciousness
Pierre and I both honor this tension between being writers documenting the profane
material world and being seekers of knowledge about an etheric
Pierre keeps the work grounded in her own memory and meticulous research
The memoir is rooted in the lush landscape where she grew up
a sacred Native land and home to her small
where spirituality offered a kind of stability in the face of economic uncertainty
a relief coming from an environment raised by a mother for whom boundaries seemed not to exist in this world
Love Is a Burning Thing seamlessly moves through the past
embers from a fire would be saved and stored in a fireproof vessel
Pierre creates a record of her mother’s life to be eternally remembered as that self-determined
It’s like an initiation for your reader to the different homes
and relationships that you experience through the mother you were you were born to in this world
The book is super intense right from the beginning
I want to talk to you about not only the personal process of writing it but also how this book fits into the culture right now
So many of the images and themes of this book are palpably in our consciousness today
PierreMy original allegiance was to understand my life and what happened
It’s a bizarre experience to be writing something like this
to be writing from a place that felt so—and I don’t mean to be precious about it—but that felt so fringe
I was raised on the fringes of what is culturally acceptable in the sort of dominant culture of the United States
and she wanted to live a self-determined life
freedom from samsara (liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth) is probably a huge theme in all the things she was reading and studying in books I’ve read
Something that all cultures seem to share is that a domestic life
and trans people—people marginalized by society
You talk a lot about how your mother’s need for self-determination was often very destabilizing for you and your brother
I would love for you to tell us about when you first realized that something was maybe—wrong
always trying to get the fuck out of dodge
I moved around so much; my life was so eclectic in terms of my mother’s belief systems
I think the constant moving and her cycling through all these belief systems gave life a sort of momentum
my mom told me this story when we were living in a motel in Mt
In my pretty cursory reading about it—because you can go down deep wormholes!—the idea of a walk-in is a soul who made a contract to exit its body at a pre-determined time
and then another soul was going to come in
She told me she was going through a hard time
you’re not understanding if this is about her mental health issue
It was a pivotal moment: my mother telling me she’s no longer Anita I
I definitely didn’t have the language for it
T Let’s talk about the primordial image of this book
NSP I actually just wrote an op-ed for the LA Times about self-immolation
There’s the experience of hearing about her self-immolation for the first time
and then tracking that to the creation of this book
the same year as she called herself a walk-in
I think we have to talk a little bit about the fact that my mother’s body was always a burned body in my life
I don’t have any memory of ever even asking her about it
I don’t think I was ready to know that this happened
but I do think that the moment she chose to tell me
she knew that my body was on the verge of going through puberty
You might be thinking about your adolescent body in a different way so
There’s something so powerful about fire that was seeded in that moment—the embers were there
fire was something that had happened in the past
My mother’s body was scarred; it was a history
I think that got tucked away until the end of her life
She started another fire and then died shortly after
spiritual terms in the cultural lexicon along with psychological disorders
and delusion: these are all really potent parts of how people are coming to understand consciousness
You’ve been growing up with this since the 1990s
The reason it took me so long to write this book is that I thought
People are always going to misunderstand this
even if we have complicated relationships with them
Beyond me feeling personally protective—and I’m sure there was literature out there
which I didn’t have access to—I didn’t see containers for women and femmes in the world that allowed for the multiplicity that I experienced in my mother
I thought everyone was going to misunderstand her
and make it less dimensional until I could write it how it needed to be written
It took me this long because I needed to become a better writer
have come to fruition in the last five to ten years
She was a radicalized person; she didn’t call herself that
I have never seen walk the walk that my mom did every single day
a radicalized independent woman who fought for what she felt was right

How to Open a Restaurant: What's the Lesson?
James Beard Award Semifinalist List 2025: The Dish!
A new iteration of the steakhouse arrives soon
Pierre in the Snack Bar space just after it opened
There are few dead restaurants mourned as hard as Burch Steak
the stylish Lowry Hill eatery that closed for the pandemic and stayed close
Pierre restaurant redefined the traditional steakhouse by offering choose-your-own-adventure steak sizes and a full commitment to dumplings
all while operating a great pizza bar in the basement and choosing not to embrace overly masculine motifs
Snack Bar just doesn't bring in the business that we need
post-Covid," Becker told me over the phone
"We've tried ticketed dinners and all sorts of events
but we can't get that midweek business to pick up
I seem to have been the one guy to figure out a way to make fancy pizza that doesn't make money."
and you know what there's a lot of around town
Sea bean crab salad and some khinkali dumplings
Snack Bar will evolve into St. Pierre's Steak and Seafood
a more upscale spot with Burch DNA plus a bit more seafood
but I think it's time she got more of the recognition
She's the one who created most of the design and decor ambience in the Snack Bar space anyway
so it's fitting that we name it for her." St
Pierre and Becker have been married for 28 years
and she is widely known in the industry as a service maven
deftly running the front of house of some of the TC's most important restaurants
"A lot of people tell us they miss Burch," St
"so we thought that instead of just sprinkling dishes on the menus of 112 and BLG
Obviously it will be on a much smaller scale
though we hope that it will still feel upscale but accessible
Pierre's Steak and Seafood will keep some of the Snack Bar menu favorites such as the fried eggplant
But it will bring back more Burch plates such as steaks
while expanding the seafood offerings to be more prominent than at Burch
And because they'll need the oven space in the kitchen
"We're actually forming this kitchen a little differently," Becker said
I've really learned that good people want rewarding and engaging work
but we're looking to add a few more good people who want to work that way."
Because they aren't planning to redo the space
Snack Bar will remain open as-is into March
they'll close the space down for a week while they transition into St
So if you want to go get one more slice of fancy pizza

One moment the island’s brightly painted buildings splashed a pop of color against the grey Atlantic—then the whole thing vanished like a mirage into the chilly Grand Banks fog
After checking the ferry schedule, I booked a room at family-owned Auberge Quatre Temps (lodging can fill up
so book before the ferry!) The 188-passenger
15-car ferry departs up to eight times a week from a small town on Newfoundland’s Burin Peninsula called Fortune
we simply walked aboard—driving to this part of France is so new that
we didn’t realize bringing a car was an option until it was too late
The French and Newfoundland Labrador governments collaborated to build two sleek car ferries in order to bring tourists between the two destinations

several co-passengers on our 90-minute trip told me they were also traveling to St
and I noticed an international border just off the coast,” one woman explained
“I wanted to go to France for the Olympics
Despite my quick Googling, my knowledge of this last remnant of France’s once-vast North American empire was pretty limited when set out on our European-ish detour. Here’s what I did know: Thanks to quirks of geography and law (as a French territory, SPM wasn’t subject to US regulations) the archipelago was a key supplier of booze during Prohibition
it transformed from a remote fishing outpost into a hub of criminal trade that has birthed bootleggers
The Pointe aux Canons Lighthouse was built to defend the islands from British attacks in the late 17th century
| Photo courtesy of Diane SelkirkDespite being located closer to puffins and icebergs than American speakeasies
Pierre and Miquelon once bustled with businessmen
As she led us through hilly streets lined with compact Peugeots and Citroëns (and a big Ford truck which stood out both for its size and novel South Carolina plates)
spun a tale of how the quiet Basque fishing port
once tussled over by the French and English
grew to have an unlikely influence on US culture
Prohibition also altered the small town’s architecture in the form of storage warehouses
The French government of the time also spent millions upgrading the port—and shipped entire buildings across the Atlantic for reassembly here
space for all that alcohol was still inadequate
Eléa explained that companies were forced to rent people’s basements and used them to store millions of bottles of liquor and pointed out one house’s particularly sturdy-looking cellar door
Afterward, we walked back down to the waterfront and to a row of brightly painted fishing sheds. That’s where we met Gérard Hélène, president of Les Zigotos
a local association that’s passionate about saving the St
Pierre working dory: the archipelago’s once-ubiquitous flat-bottomed wooden fishing boat
is deeply committed to preserving this older part of SPM’s history
he and my boat-loving husband were leaning over one of the crayon-colored hulls
throwing around words like “sheer” and “rocker.” Happy to leave them to it
I wandered into the club’s little museum and took in the photos and artifacts celebrating the heyday of the cod fishery
The smell of salt and old wood filled the room
evoking a time when these dories were essential to life on the islands
my phone randomly jumped between Canadian and French carriers
leaving me perpetually unsure if I was late or early
The arrival of Eléa (who seemed to be the guide for everything)
along with several familiar faces from the ferry
Soon we were strolling across the grassy island
learning about life when the church (Eglise Notre-Dame-des-Marins)
and endless-seeming cod was laid out by the children to dry on the island’s expansive gravel beds
We also got a glimpse of the island’s French influence when we encountered locals carrying picnic supplies of brie
Eléa explained that not only is Île Aux Marins an open-air museum
it’s also a popular spot for getting away from it all on a sunny day
The tiny island even hosts a summer camp and soccer clinics for kids
Pierre's historic downtown is easily walkable and offers a variety of restaurants
| Photo courtesy of Diane SelkirkWhile most residents on SPM speak some English
our high school French was handy for reading menus and for helping a fellow ferry passenger find a liquor store
the same whose family booked their trip soon after she noticed the international border
hadn’t realized that bringing a car to the islands was still uncommon and automatically included their vehicle when she called the SPM Ferry office for reservations (cars can’t be booked online through the website–just over the phone.)
which also had an excellent selection of local pâté
she told us about some of the highlights from her car-based excursions
Hiking across the island on the L'Anse a Henry trail, looking back toward Sailor's Island. | Photo courtesy of Diane SelkirkCatching a lift with a local, it didn’t take long to drive out of town and reach the trailhead for L’Anse a Henry
I felt transported back to Newfoundland—which I could see on the horizon
where there was nothing but wind and the scent of briny sea mixed with northern plants like fragrant sweetgale and zesty Labrador tea
the air filled with the sounds of seabirds as thousands of petrels and puffins took flight from nearby Grand Colombier
Out in the distance I caught sight of a small boat
It was easy to imagine an ancient Basque fisherman rowing his dory back from the fishing grounds
or a smuggler coming for another load of rum
or even a tour guide maneuvering their boat to show visitors the wildlife
concealing the boat entirely and ending my reverie
The next day we took the ferry back to Newfoundland
I traded notes with some of the passengers we’d crossed paths again and again in the little French territory
reaching the consensus we’d need to return
One pointed out we could still see St Pierre’s striped lighthouse and then gasped as the fog thickened and swallowed both the lighthouse and the wondrous little island whole

Whilst Georges St-Pierre did achieve success when he returned to the UFC and won the middleweight title
it’s his reign over the welterweight division that saw him receive recognition as one of the all-time greats
The Canadian icon did it all having won the belt back after St-Pierre was shockingly beaten by Matt Serra before he went on to clear out the division by seeing off any and all challengers
Over a decade on from the long-reigning titleholder producing some of the most iconic nights in the history of the sport at the Bell Center in Montreal
the welterweight title is set to return to that same venue in several weeks time
Belal Muhammad will defend the championship against Jack Della Maddalena in the main event of UFC 315 where the man that most fans associate with the belt will be in attendance
We are just FOURTEEN days out‼️Two belts on the line for #UFC315 Get your tickets here: https://t.co/No7YLCarYU pic.twitter.com/JNOsgAKakt
In an exclusive interview with Bloody Elbow, Georges St-Pierre confirmed that he will be in the building for UFC 315 to corner his Tristar teammate and fellow Canadian, Aiemann Zahabi
The second of two title fights on May 10 sees Belal Muhammad defend the welterweight belt for the first time since he dethroned Leon Edwards in their rematch at UFC 304 last July
‘Remember the Name’ has been overlooked throughout the majority of his career but he has become harder to deny with each win as he continues to prove people wrong
After top contender Shavkat Rakhmonov was unable to fight on this date, Australia’s Jack Della Maddalena got the call following his seven-fight win streak inside the Octagon
12 of Della Maddalena’s 17 pro wins have come via knockout with the 28-year-old being particularly known for his sharp boxing skills
expect the challenger to have the advantage on the feet
the former welterweight champion doesn’t believe that this is a simple striker versus grappler match having been impressed by Muhammad in his recent fights
“Belal is the complete package,” St-Pierre told Bloody Elbow
“He’s good everywhere and he’s got a very awkward style that throws a lot of people off
especially standing up in the striking department
he’s on a winning streak and it’s going to be an interesting fight
Jack I think could have the advantages in the striking department but it’s not only a kickboxing match
it’s mixed martial arts and that’s when I believe Belal Muhammad takes advantage of it
I think he’s got more tools to win but that doesn’t mean that he’s going to win.”
Georges St-Pierre proved himself to be one of the most well-rounded fighters that we have ever seen inside the Octagon
His style allowed him to adapt to whatever challenge was thrown at him whether he was locking horns with a dangerous striker or an accomplished grappler
The question heading into UFC 315 is whether Jack Della Maddalena will be able to pull off the upset to beat Belal Muhammad despite what St-Pierre said about him having more tools to win
‘Rush’ said that the key to beating a well-rounded champion
We will find out on May 10 whether Della Maddalena is the right man to solve the puzzle that Muhammad brings to the table
“It’s always about cracking the code and he’s the champion for a reason
Nobody has cracked the code so far and Belal’s style is very aggressive
He puts a constant forward pressure and he makes guys fight on their heels
He’s very good at changing levels and changing the momentum of the fight and that’s his main asset
