The town was founded in 1666 when Louis XIV was looking for a harbour for his royal galleys and it expanded hugely in the 19th century as a major port for the wine Today Sète is all about fish … and water jousting Although the tournament takes place late in August even in winter preparation and training is under way for the joutes It has been going on for over 350 years and involves two teams dressed as sailors charging at each other in a bulky rowing boat carrying musicians and a lone elevated jouster who tries to batter their opposite number into the water with a lance The town’s annual jousting tournament takes place in August. At the August water jousting, 15,000 visitors cram along the waterfront, but even on a winter’s day – it’s a mild 14C – everyone’s out, queueing up for a tielle at Sophie Cianni & Co on the corner of is now the second largest port on the Mediterranean coast after Marseille-Fos an essential link in the logistics chain of the Occitanie region It is owned by the Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée region which in 2008 set up a regional public institution called “Port Sud de France” to manage the 3 port concessions: the commercial The port of Sète – Frontignan plays a key role as an economic player supporting tourism and generating numerous direct and indirect jobs The city of Sète lies on a lido between the Etang de Thau an escarpment that constitutes a remarkable natural heritage Geographical constraints are also the strength of Sète which has based its identity on its maritime it is the most populous commune in a conurbation that also includes Frontignan The dynamic growth of the Port of Sète since at least 2019 has been much noted represent both an economic opportunity and a challenge for the balance of the region with 800 berths and a thousand additional moorings along the canals The local players have succeeded in establishing a new dynamic of cooperation Various projects have emerged to green the port and redevelop the city-port interface That’s why we wanted to interview François Commeinhes The Port of Sète Sud de France joined AIVP in 2023 and the City of Sète in 2024 the town retains a close link with port activity “When I go back along the chain of my life I find it attached by these iron rings that are sealed in the stone of our quays now engraved on a monumental sculpture adjacent to the marina symbolizes the town’s attachment to its port the 350e anniversary of the port’s creation was the occasion for a major heritage cultural and popular celebration that drew huge crowds the largest biennial celebration of Mediterranean maritime traditions co-organized by the eponymous association Port development contributes to a dynamic economic life and job creation The fishing boats moored in the heart of the city are the crucible of its identity Cruise passengers benefit the shops and restaurants in the town center Average spending is estimated at 50 euros per person Walking tours organized by the Sète agglopôle Méditerranée tourist office invite cruise passengers to visit the town center The port of Sète is also a question of landscapes port activity has always been intertwined with the town and finally at the beginning of the 20th century with the diversification of the commercial port The development of industrial activities then made cohabitation more complex until the sudden closure of the Frontignan refinery port activity was revived thanks to major investments by the Occitanie region which concentrated development to the east of the town The destruction of the old grain silos in 2013 but also all of the marina’s structures have historically been integrated into the city center the Grande Plaisance Yachting center has been integrated into the commercial port on the Orsetti basin and will be completely refurbished in 2019 in order to better integrate the city and the port The refurbishment involved relocating the ferry arrivals providing OPS and planting the yachting basin The development of the Port of Sète-Frontignan reached this year its 9th consecutive year of record activity (excluding covid year) Thanks to investments by the Occitanie Region the Port of Sète has been able to modernize its infrastructure diversify its activities and become an attractive Investments reflect a remarkable partnership between the public (Occitanie Region and Port Sud de France) and private (industrialists present in the port) sectors with 115,000 cruise passengers calling at Sète (compared with 1,866,0000 for Marseille in the same year) the Port of Sète and the Club des Croisières de Sète the organization that promotes the destination opting for the development of reasoned cruising (ships under 240 m) and a target of 70,000 passengers for the 2021-2025 strategic project compared with the 150,000 initially planned 50 calls and 27,000 passengers were welcomed to the port of Sète A new tourism offering has also been introduced for cruise passengers with a catalog of “green” excursions designed to provide a unique eco-friendly experience for tourists wishing to discover the natural beauty and cultural richness of Sète and the Bassin de Thau while respecting the environment (electric bike rides electric boats… and tourist destinations closer to Sète the Port of Sète has decided to anticipate the regulations on decarbonization of its activities by proposing from 2020 an incentive pricing policy based on the Environmental Ship Index (ESI) to reward the most virtuous ships the Port of Sète took a major step towards decarbonizing its activities with the delivery of four electrification points on three quays These electrical connections enable regular ferry and ro-ro lines to reduce CO2 emissions and noise pollution when docked the port is unique in that it stretches across the entire center of Sète Its port facilities can accommodate monohulls and multihulls from 6 to 50 meters more than 1,800 berths are managed by the regional public institution Port de Sète – Sud de France privileged partnerships with environmental organizations enable regular awareness-raising campaigns for users and the general public notably during events such as the Open Port days which this year take place during the Heritage Days (September 20 The territory of the Greater Sète was marked by a strong period of urbanization in the 1980s to 2000 which resulted in a very high consumption of space Since the first masterplan was adopted unanimously by the 14 municipalities in 2014 the Thau basin has divided its consumption of new space by 4 the aim is to achieve zero net artificialization by 2050 Industrial and port wastelands offer a real opportunity to meet this challenge The Greater Sète has been awarded the title of “Territoire pilote de sobriété foncière” (“Pilot territory for land conservation”) and is pursuing a strategy of densifying the Thau arc to avoid urban sprawl while at the same time meeting part of the economic and housing land requirements that are vital to the region’s development and to satisfying the housing needs of the local population One of the first projects of this kind is the development of a new district at the eastern entrance to Sète Created by reclaiming former industrial and port wastelands this new district will cover 18 hectares and will be equipped with a thalassothermal system.  Attractive it offers a modern and friendly living environment for working people and young households Nearly 39,000 m2 will be dedicated to commercial and service activities mixed with a residential area housing a total of 1,800 homes This overhaul of the city’s eastern entrance is complemented by a reconfiguration of its access to the heart of the conurbation in particular the multimodal interchange located less than ¼ hour away on foot bicycle parking and an increased-frequency train link to Montpellier or Narbonne with the hope of maintaining direct high speed service the reclamation of industrial wasteland also aims to enable the development of the blue economy With the ambition of becoming the reference territory for blue growth in Occitania Sète and the Thau Basin have federated key players around a blue growth pact The port is an integral part of this pact and of this new economic development strategy which integrates 4 areas of strategic action: Some twenty partners have already signed the pact The port decided to integrate the sustainable development of its activities into its Strategic Plan 2016-2020 We have built the Smart&Green Port strategy around 4 pillars in order to integrate technological and environmental ambitions into our development the promotion of low-emission modes of transport which is one of the strengths of the Port of Sète We are a multimodal port with 42 km of intra-port rail tracks and we inaugurated our new rail platform at the end of 2021 after being selected by the State as part of the government’s Recovery Plan focused on the development of rail highways announced in July 2020 by the Prime Minister Jean Castex we have transited 15,000 units/year by rail The port of Sète is also home to the mouth of the Canal du Rhône à Sète enabling goods to be transported by river as well.  The second pillar aims to develop renewable energies and diversify our energy sources The Port of Sète was a pioneer in the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roofs of port warehouses the port had more than 4 ha of solar cover producing 2.5 times the annual consumption of Port Sud de France’s operations across its 3 ports A second photovoltaic phase is currently under study with the introduction of a further 10 ha of self-consumption shading The third pillar of our Smart&Green Port strategy is the implementation of a low-carbon strategy with various initiatives such as the replacement of the port’s vehicle fleet with an electric one we will be implementing an incentive pricing policy based on ESI renewing our port equipment with the latest-generation tools and of course the project to connect the port’s electricity supply to the quayside which will have an immediate and short-term impact on our direct environment All these actions cannot be implemented without a constant watch on developments and innovative solutions that may emerge We are active in this watch and dedicate part of our teams to innovation The last pillar concerns environmental management establishing procedures and practices to reduce our impact in a sustainable way and quality social dialogue to ensure that all port employees feel involved in the process The gradual development of the town of Sète and its port since 1666 has led to changes in the coastline and exchanges between the sea and the Thau lagoon increasing pressure on the aquatic environment This same development has led to the creation of new habitats for different species and life stages new hard substrates and the creation of new sheltered stretches of water (700 ha) launched a wide-ranging study of its marine biodiversity with the help of the Agence de L’eau This study has highlighted the various ecological functions (nursery by detecting areas at stake and areas under pressure by sector The study highlighted the importance of pursuing the action plan developed since 2013 to reduce pressures on the aquatic environment and of carrying out actions to protect biodiversity the Port de Sète – Sud de France’s Port “Clean Port and Active Port in Biodiversity” strategy has structured an approach to progress based on concrete actions while providing an internationally recognized benchmark port agents are trained in the importance of these issues as soon as they take up their posts and receive regular anti-pollution training Aware of the direct link with the Thau lagoon Port Sud de France works to preserve the marine environment with a cleaning service provider whose mission is to collect liquid waste from ships and floating macro-waste In line with the Smart&Green port strategy the port also relies on innovations to further improve its environmental performance the port tested ‘Dpol’ suction robots and absorbent pads made from recycled goose feathers from used badminton shuttlecocks the port is now considering a bubble barrier system to stop pollution entering or leaving the lagoon This approach also relies on the support of the 2,000 yachtsmen in the port of Sète who are welcomed on arrival with anti-pollution kits and educated each year with the help of the CPIE du Bassin de Thau which encourages them to adopt and develop eco-actions on a daily basis our partnership with the environmental organizations enables us to communicate to as many people as possible in a fun and educational way about the challenges of plastic pollution facing the lagoon and the Mediterranean Sea Bordered to the south by the Mediterranean and to the north by the Thau lagoon Sète is a maritime city of character that has always attached particular importance to fishing activities Fishing and marine cultures are the main vocation of the Thau lagoon which implies a permanent watch on the surrounding anthropic impacts development and water management policies are specific to the Thau basin These are set out in the coastal section of the water and land master plan which impose maximum permissible flows per sub-catchment area the fruit of innovative scientific work involving research institutes and local water authorities In order to involve all stakeholders in this policy and to facilitate dialogue and ownership of the issues at stake the Thau Integrated Management and Ecological Transition Contract 2020-2025 is the 5th generation of Thau contracts It comprises 59 action sheets for an estimated total of 580 million euros The Occitanie Region and the Port of Sète Sud de France are fully involved in drawing up and coordinating these contracts coordinated public action to enhance the environmental quality of the Thau lagoon France Sète Can you briefly tell our international network’s members about your organisation Haiti National Port Authority (APN) is an independent public commercial undertaking with its own Those responsible for educational policies seem increasingly committed to this fact, since it is one of the most important factors that influence the success of a university student; for this reason, the study of this topic has gained relevance in recent years. Therefore, an instrument with adequate psychometric properties is needed to measure this construct in Spanish-speaking countries. The study had the purpose of translating, adapting, and evaluating the internal structure, providing evidence of reliability and validity of the Student Evaluation of Teachers’ Effectiveness (SETE) Scale in a Latin American sample. An instrumental study was carried out and through convenience sampling, data were collected from 1,000 university students from South America belonging to a private educational network. The participants were between 18 and 40 years old (M = 21.25, SD = 2.99). Analyzes used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with AMOS 24 statistical software. Confirmatory Factor Analysis provided a 4-factor, 28-item fit model (CMIN/DF = 4.359; CFI = 0.956; SRMR = 0.030; RMSEA = 0.058). The results demonstrated good internal consistency (α = between 0.927 and 0.961; CR = between 0.927 and 0.962; AVE = between 0.646 and 0.799). Evidence of validity and reliability was obtained for the total sample. This adaptation and validation of the SETE scale makes it a valid, useful, reliable, and necessary tool that can be considered to evaluate teachers’ effectiveness from the perspective of university students. Volume 9 - 2024 | https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2024.1401718 Introduction: Teacher effectiveness is a burgeoning field Those responsible for educational policies seem increasingly committed to this fact since it is one of the most important factors that influence the success of a university student; for this reason the study of this topic has gained relevance in recent years an instrument with adequate psychometric properties is needed to measure this construct in Spanish-speaking countries Objective: The study had the purpose of translating providing evidence of reliability and validity of the Student Evaluation of Teachers’ Effectiveness (SETE) Scale in a Latin American sample Methods: An instrumental study was carried out and through convenience sampling data were collected from 1,000 university students from South America belonging to a private educational network The participants were between 18 and 40 years old (M = 21.25 Analyzes used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with AMOS 24 statistical software Results: Confirmatory Factor Analysis provided a 4-factor 28-item fit model (CMIN/DF = 4.359; CFI = 0.956; SRMR = 0.030; RMSEA = 0.058) The results demonstrated good internal consistency (α = between 0.927 and 0.961; CR = between 0.927 and 0.962; AVE = between 0.646 and 0.799) Evidence of validity and reliability was obtained for the total sample Discussion: This adaptation and validation of the SETE scale makes it a valid and necessary tool that can be considered to evaluate teachers’ effectiveness from the perspective of university students and evaluate the validity and reliability of the SETE scale in a sample of university students from Latin America However, for this study, the four dimensions proposed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Ethiopia (MOE) and the latest scientific contributions of Ayaneh et al. (2021) who consider a better theoretical model of four dimensions: subject matter knowledge (SK) Subject matter knowledge (SK) is the ability of the teacher to meet the content of the course demonstrating preparation and using common examples to achieve the objectives of each session Professional competence (PC) refers to the degree to which the teacher uses his or her knowledge skills and good judgment related to professional skills to perform his or her main task with acceptable quality Ethical competence (EC) is understood as the teaching competence that reconsiders promoting ethical education in classroom activities conferences and through extracurricular activities known as the ability to make effective use of teaching time to efficiently fulfill their academic responsibilities These studies can be separated into two groups The first group of studies reviewed present reliability and validity The metric consists of 33 items subdivided into 3 factors: instructor evaluation and students’ perceptions of learning outcomes the purpose of this research is to translate adapt and evaluate the validity and reliability of the SETE scale in a sample of Latin American university students Several specialists argue that the SETE scale captures multiple aspects of a university teacher’s good practices and that its periodic revision in different cultural contexts could help educational leaders to improve their educational and teaching management policies and strategies The SETE scale is a harmonized instrument used to measure teacher effectiveness. Highly qualified experts originally developed it by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (previously, Ministry of Education) of Ethiopia (MOE, 2018). Ayaneh et al. (2021) later evaluated its psychometric properties analyzing 2 models (4 and 2 factors) managing to confirm 2 factors (CFI = 0.999 SRMR = 0.056; RMSEA = 0.008) The scale demonstrated good internal consistency (α = between 0.87 and 0.93) in a sample of Ethiopian university students The original version of the SETE scale required translation from its original English language to Spanish using a bilingual trial back-translation method Three bilingual (Spanish-English) Spanish-speaking individuals completed English-to-Spanish translations of the SETE scale individually and reviewed in a focus group of six university students (Peru and Colombia) who met the study’s inclusion criteria to obtain the first complete version in Spanish of the scale and its contextual application to the four selected South American countries The English and Spanish versions of the SETE scale were tested on a target group of bilingual individuals before some final changes were made and distributed to the study sample reliability was evaluated using Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient and composite reliability On the other hand, indicators such as mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis were obtained for each of the items applied in this study. The skewness and kurtosis results are nearly zero, meaning the distributions are symmetrical. Furthermore, variability is denoted in the mean, which shows the diversity of responses regarding perceptions among the study participants, as shown in Table 3 To identify the factorial condition of the scale, an Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was carried out on each element, observing that the items were distributed into four factors according to the construct analyzed (Table 4) The difference is quite clear between the four factors The KMO and Bartlett test (Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin correlation coefficient = 0.975) has a value greater than 0.7 and the Bartlett test (Sig = 0.000) is very significant for performing factor analysis The total variance explained in the model is 73.66% with Subject Knowledge (SK) = 57.15% Professional Competence (PC) = 7.59% Ethical Competence (EC) = 5.21% and Time Management (TM) = 3.71% All items have been grouped according to their original dimensions Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was performed these values translate as an acceptable measurement model that meets favorable levels of reliability and convergent validity Table 6 shows each indicator of model fit that measures teaching effectiveness Regarding discriminant validity (Table 7), the results show that the confidence intervals, in none of the cases, reach unity. Additionally, the quantile covariances do not exceed the AVE; therefore, there is clear evidence of discrimination between the constructs subjected to evaluation (Fornell and Larcker, 1981) Finally, the final version of the instrument, which underwent rigorous content validity, EFA, and CFA processes to ensure reliable psychometric properties for use, is described (Table 9) It is made up of four factors: 06 items for Subject matter Knowledge (SK) The dimensions presented in these scales share characteristics with others that measure the same construct although to date there is no consensus on their dimensionality This explains why the 4-factor model lacked discriminant validity and probably better explains why the CFA was deficient The adaptation carried out in the present study showed that the factors SK = Subject knowledge PC = Professional competence Although two items (items 16 and 19) had to be eliminated from the initial 30 the results demonstrated good internal consistency (α = between 0.927 and 0.961; CR = between 0.927 and 0.962; AVE = between 0.646 and 0.799) The final version of the scale consists of 28 items The SETE scale is now ready to be used as a valid and reliable tool to evaluate the effectiveness of teachers in the university teaching process Teachers can use this measurement tool to understand what students perceive as their strengths and weaknesses College students can also use this information to make more informed course selections This can be applied in future research to find correlations Institutions can also use it to make decisions about their teachers Although the SETE scale has good psychometric properties it is recommended that its revision be reconsidered in the future It needs to be revised and updated periodically to meet the rapidly changing needs of university students these results can be the platform for the creation of innovative policies strategies and educational programs that increase university students’ perception of teaching effectiveness thus contributing to an increase in the quality of education in Latin American countries The results of this study should be considered taking into account the following limitations: One limitation is that although the scale was adapted and harmonized to be applied to all private universities in the Latin American countries of South America (whose languages derive from Latin this analysis only used data from some countries (4/10) which may not be generalizable to other private universities in South America this study highlights the need to obtain a large amount of data from multiple universities and representative samples from each South American country to strengthen existing findings further the questionnaire assumed that students’ evaluations of teachers were free of prejudices or stereotypes university participants with high grades in their subjects are likely to give higher scores on the questionnaire participants who obtained low grades in their subjects consider this evaluation a form of retaliation against their teachers In addition, the physical attractiveness of the teacher, the time taken to complete the survey, the proximity to a teacher, the difficulty of the course, and the teacher’s age, performance, and personality can become determining factors in students’ evaluations (Calaguas, 2012; Kim et al., 2019; Shahzad and Mehmood, 2019; Sofyan et al., 2021) It is also recommended to consider the semester for the application of the questionnaire given that taking it in the first (students are not entirely familiar with the teacher’s methods) or last (students with failing grades among others) weeks of class can create study bias it is recommended that some indication or filter be included in the questionnaire to determine whether the subjects considered are all the subjects of the academic period or only the compulsory ones since this could influence the evaluation of the students the “Professional Competence” (PC) factor was validated with 14 items which may be another limitation of this study the study’s findings will significantly help university education professionals address teacher effectiveness problems and reliability were performed on a sample of 1,000 South American university students of both sexes After having passed through a diligent process of content validity the results presented reliable psychometric properties for the application The scale confirmed 28 items distributed in 4 factors (SK In terms of convergent and discriminant validity the internal consistency of the scores was determined by observing adequate values for Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient (α = between 0.927 and 0.961) the SETE scale is considered a scientific tool with accessible International Airport has predicted that 2024 will be a “landmark year” for Greece’s tourism while cautioning against taking the solid growth of the sector for granted During a fireside chat with Skai TV news presenter Sia Kosioni on the second day of the “Reimagine Tourism in Greece” conference at the new Aegean Airlines hangar at the airport on Wednesday Paraschis emphasized the need for measures to protect the industry’s competitiveness “It is clearly a warning bell that trends are changing,” he said when asked about the decrease in tourism revenue this July compared to the same month last year He said that summer tourism may not be as popular as it once was due to overcrowding and high temperatures “But it also indicates that what we experienced after the pandemic – that every year we would do better – is not guaranteed we need to focus on what we call ‘value for money’ in Greek tourism and the overall competitiveness of our offerings,” he added this is not something that is guaranteed for 2025 and beyond,” he said but this is not guaranteed for the future’ Greek tourism experienced a boom post-pandemic “Europe is struggling this year to recover and reach the tourist traffic levels of 2019 we are approximately 25% above those levels This has created pressure on various systems There is clearly a concentration in many areas where infrastructure cannot keep up Paraschis highlighted that SETE has called for specific measures in targeted destinations to alleviate some of the pressure and protect the tourism product “We at SETE are advocating for specific actions in particular destinations to safeguard the product the degradation of a destination’s functionality for residents and workers directly impacts the tourism experience,” he noted citing the regulation of cruise ship arrivals as an example but we also want sustainable tourism for the future,” Paraschis said explaining that SETE has invited tourism businesses to participate in a new would hardly go by without a gig in the Tudor Room of the Sheraton Palace hotel seen as a classy background music in hotel dining rooms was in high demand – but hired to play at cocktail hour Sete would often go ignored by the audience of thirsty diners Things changed when trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie recognised Sete and his guitar the pair having met in Rio de Janeiro a few years earlier so much so that he would return to the Tudor Room with pianist Lalo Schifrin to witness what this little-known musician was capable of It was a message very intense,” Schifrin later said Sete would soon play on Gillespie’s iconic album New Wave Now considered a forefather of New Age music Sete also stood out for his hypnotic performance style and ability to translate the music of the world (from Brazil to India) to his singular jazz language Cover for 1964 album The Incomparable Bola Sete Photograph: Records/AlamyThe late John Fahey visionary American folk and blues guitarist said listening to Sete for the first time was “a turning point … I couldn’t sit still I’d never heard anything like it since Charley Patton purged – I was not the same.” Carlos Santana affirmed that the “holy trinity” of guitar playing consisted of Wes Montgomery In a testimonial for a posthumous Sete album Santana said that the Brazilian musician was “an orchestra by himself” he would come to be sampled by the likes of Destiny’s Child and A Tribe Called Quest Djalma de Andrade (his birth name) was raised by highly musical relatives – many of whom played music De Andrade started venturing on to the guitar at three; at six he gained a cavaquinho (typical samba string instrument) from his mother and aged 10 he was adopted by a middle-class family who helped him to study classical guitar at Rio’s National School of Music the guitarist formed his first Brazilian music ensemble he earned the nickname Bola Sete (an allusion to the brown billiard ball) “He was ascending in prominence among jazz critics and lovers while the rest of the Brazilian musicians [who then resided in the US] were quickly falling in prestige,” says ethnomusicologist Kaleb E Goldschmitt “He’s the one who escaped the ‘fad’ discourse.” This fad was the 1962-3 period when bossa nova broke out of the upper middle-class bubble in those high class hotels and reached a much wider public most Brazilian bossa nova-related musicians were no longer considered cool but jazz fans and the media were still raving about Sete – “[jazz guitarist] Charlie Byrd was able to identify his sound with a blindfold on,” says Goldschmitt – long before bossa nova’s second wave came with the Getz/Gilberto album and The Girl from Ipanema hit which allowed him to play very independent lines like a piano player,” says jazz guitarist Scott Hesse also a music professor at DePaul University in Chicago “His pianistic approach just wasn’t something that a lot of guitar players were doing to that level at that time.” He gave that technique (a result of studying his Ramírez guitar in front of the mirror for many hours) a powerful expressiveness “He could actually read a room and understand how to make it a meaningful experience,” says Hesse recalling that 1966 Monterey jazz festival performance he had the people in the palm of his hand and then took them on a journey throughout the entire set.” Performing in San Francisco circa 1976 Photograph: Tom Copi/Getty ImagesAccording to his widow but had a magnetic presence that attracted others Sometimes he would walk out on stage with his guitar and the audience would give him a standing ovation.” Anne and Sete met in 1965 when they became neighbors in Sausalito: “He radiated a sense of peace and love.” Having played numerous gigs with Sete in the late 1960s Brazilian drummer Chico Batera recalls how their shows always went beyond “mere” bossa nova and jazz repertoire “There was a moment when the bassist and I would leave the stage and Sete stayed to solo [Brazilian composer and classical guitarist] Villa-Lobos on his guitar.” Batera who also played with Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald increasing the prestige of Brazilian music among jazz lovers.” Sete’s aim to expand music boundaries became even more sophisticated after the 1970s he opened dialogues with cultures as diverse as Spanish folk music Ocean (1975) pre-empts “a lot of what happened in the New Age music from the 1980s and 1990s,” Hesse says Sete’s last works reveal a highly spiritual musician “After Bola mastered the full lotus position he told me that musical information could come in without any obstructions required him to get out of the way,” says Anne recalling that they loved going to the Marin County beaches and practising yoga on the sand Bola Sete is unfamiliar to most North American and even Brazilian audiences “People didn’t really know how to categorise him because he brought in so many different influences,” Hesse argues while Goldschmitt affirms that guitarists have never really been acclaimed throughout jazz history: “Pianists are the most respected Sete is present in ways people do not always realise are a part of every guitarist’s technical repertoire This article It’s this three-piece that is featured on Samba In Seattle: Live At The Penthouse (1966-1968), a three-CD set out on December 3 from Tompkins Square Records This marvelous set is the latest archival release culled from the hours of recordings made at Seattle jazz club The Penthouse for use in a weekly radio broadcast “the de facto custodian of these tapes,” and plucked out the Sete sessions on a whim “I was really taken by the music,” Feldman remembers and he just doesn’t get the spotlight enough.” This collection is the perfect vehicle to return him to center stage The selection of tracks from the trio’s regular appearances at the Penthouse in the late ’60s focuses on Sete’s dazzling abilities as an acoustic guitarist The emphasis is on samba and bossa nova grooves The trio settles into the easy swing of Marcos Valle’s “Samba de Verão” and a slow phosphorescent take on Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Corcovado” comfortably with Sete gently disturbing the waters with his solos the guitarist explores the full range of his talents and influences Each disc ends with a solo guitar piece on which Sete runs free He honors a request to play “Malagueña,” a piece from Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona’s Suite Andalucia with flurries of notes and free-flowing time signature Sete’s own “Flamenco Fantasy” is nearly eight minutes of aggressive strumming and quickly plucked runs on the strings that pulls in snippets of melodies from a handful of flamenco standards he proves to be a more than capable hand at classical guitar work Bach partita with ease and a touch of wiggly excitement One small knock on this set is that the songs chosen keep Sete firmly in the spotlight with little room for his rhythm section to emerge from the shadows The guitarist does briefly step out of the way during the two renditions of the Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn composition “Satin Doll” for Neto to jump in with an appropriately lustrous solo making his presence known with judicious splashes of a cymbal and some lovely brush work on his snare Tompkins Square is truly the ideal home for Samba In Seattle “one of the fabrics of the label has been acoustic guitar music,” particularly the finger-picked folk style known as “American primitive.” Latin guitar music was one of the building blocks of American folk and a major influence on many of the players that Tompkins Square has championed This collection features an essay Fahey wrote about Sete for Guitar Player magazine in 1976 in which he recounts seeing the Brazilian play in San Francisco and how the set left him “transformed Samba In Seattle will wind up having a similar effect on not only the current school of acoustic players but anyone who might fall under its spell Brazilian drilling contractor Sete Brasil has reached agreements with Singapore’s rig builders Keppel Offshore & Marine and Sembcorp Marine related to contracts for the construction of six semi-submersible rigs and seven drillships Sete Brasil was formed in 2011 to own and operate drilling rigs to be used by Petrobras for drilling offshore Brazil The company was subsequently linked to the largest corruption scandal in Brazil which blocked it from obtaining the previously approved bank loans that were meant to be used for rig payments Petrobras refused to commit to the whole rig contract package All this has lead to Sete failing to pay installments for more than $10 billion dollars worth of drilling rigs it had ordered from Sembcorp and its compatriot Keppel Sete Brazil was forced to file for bankruptcy protection due to Petrobras’ hesitation to sign the long-term contracts Keppel Offshore & Marine said on Monday that its subsidiaries had entered into a settlement agreement with subsidiaries of Sete Brasil including Urca procurement and construction contracts for the construction of six semi-submersible drilling rigs for these six Sete Brasil subsidiaries Fernvale will take over ownership of the uncompleted rigs which arose from the performance of the EPC Contracts with Bracuhy The EPC Contracts and related agreements entered into with these four subsidiaries will be deemed to be amicably terminated refunds and/or any additional amounts being due to any party and the parties will waive all rights to any claims The works done under the EPC Contracts with Bracuhy and Portogalo are about 40% and 21% completed respectively while those for Mangaratiba and Botinas are below 10% When the settlement agreement comes into effect Fernvale will have full ownership over the four uncompleted rigs and will be able to explore various options to extract the best value from these assets As for the rigs under construction for Urca and Frade a total sum of close to $260m will be recognized as part of the undisputed debt included in Sete Brasil’s court-approved Judicial Reorganization Plan The outstanding amount will be paid to Fernvale proportionally and pari passu with the other creditors of the Sete Group as part of At a meeting of Sete Brasil’s creditors that was held on October 3 in Brazil by Sete Brasil and its Austrian subsidiaries as well as the winning bid proposal for Magni Partners to purchase four Sete Brasil subsidiaries The settlement agreement will only become effective upon the fulfillment of other conditions precedent including the successful sale of Urca and Frade by Sete Brasil to Magni Partners Fernvale is in discussions with Magni Partners on the terms to complete the construction of the drilling rigs contracted with Urca and Frade which are about 92% and 70% completed respectively When the settlement agreement becomes effective Keppel O&M would be able to resolve a long outstanding issue related to the six rigs Sembcorp Marine has reached an agreement with Sete Brasil in relation to a total of seven drillship contracts secured by its various subsidiaries from Sete Brasil’s various subsidiaries These contracts had a total contract price of $5.6 billion Following the filing by Sete Brasil for a judicial restructuring in Brazil, Sembcorp Marine announced on April 22, 2016, that it had started arbitration proceedings against various subsidiaries of Sete Brasil for claims under the contracts The company said on Monday it had reached a full and final settlement of the claims under all contracts with Sete Group subject to certain conditions precedent being fulfilled Upon the fulfillment of the conditions precedent all seven contracts will be terminated and the parties will mutually release each other from all claims in relation to the contracts In respect of two of the seven drillships which have the most advanced construction progress the titles to such works will be apportioned between the shipyard and Sete Brasil in proportion to payments made by Sete Brasil Sete Brasil has identified a buyer for the companies of Sete Brasil The buyer is expected to negotiate with Sembcorp Marine to enter into new contracts to complete the drillships the parties will terminate the arbitration The behemoths parked alongside the canal were a bit of a mystery at first when I visited Sète it was obvious that these big boats were purse seiners meant to catch bluefin tuna: Tall piles of netting were stacked on deck while smaller powerboats were arranged on and alongside What surprised me was that the boats didn’t go anywhere they didn’t seem to be doing much besides waiting while the boats stayed still “We always fished more than the quota,” retired French skipper Vincent Caci And France helped us build expensive new boats.” expensive boats along the canal were the survivors of that time the European Union finally did begin cracking down on illegal activities catch documents were actually filed and recorded The number of bluefin in the Mediterranean have also been increasing the international group that sets quotas (the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas also known as ICCAT) approved a 20 percent increase over the next three years (a move that many environmentalists say is too much too soon) catching bluefin is still a profitable business I found that the season was now shortened to just three weeks a crewman can make 50,000 Euros in that abbreviated season while a captain could expect upward of 500,000 Euros (roughly $57,000 and $570,000 in U.S But what most impressed me about Sète was how fishing coexisted with the cafes and hotels demanded by the Mediterranean tourist industry The port is on a strip of land surrounded by water with the Mediterranean on one side and the Thau a large saltwater lagoon home to legions of oyster and mussel farms On the inland side of Sete is the Pointe Courte a small “short tip” that juts into the Thau Here is a fisherman’s village tucked away behind the train station where small boats are docked to the rows of traditional fishermen’s huts that line the water while nets dry in the sun There is even a house for “lonely cats,” as roughly translated a tiny but clean hut just for stray cats that mostly lounged peacefully on the many little beds that were provided for them inside and out So while the tuna fishermen waited for that paycheck A couple evenings we watched the skipper of a small trawler go through his end-of-the-day ritual of pulling up along the quay in front of our hotel (a great place to sit and enjoy cheap but delicious wine from the region) tying up and driving his pickup truck away His actions were not unlike the woman who ran the bicycle rental place next door who each day closed her shop around the same time and pedaled away across the cobblestones in the late afternoon sun send us your feedback around what we can do to improve this feature or further develop it check it out The reason I opened my store was to perpetuate the family tradition speaks passionately about a subject she masters to perfection: “tielle” the famous round pie with fluted edges and a beautiful orange colour made of octopus or squid and spicy tomato sauce which she sells from morning to evening in her downtown boutique the store’s facade is a reminder that it’s also an integral element of the tielle: decorated by the architect Guy Falco it proudly displays a portrait of Sophie’s great-grandmother this enterprising “mamma” managed to transform a humble dish of poor fishermen from Italy into a renowned gastronomic specialty still made by her descendants which includes Sophie Cianni and her many cousins basically two families make tielles: the Ciannis and the Dassés” “They are the children of Adrienne’s children Each in their own way tries to keep my great-grandmother’s original recipe alive the tielle has become a veritable institution in this small port on the Languedoc coast where poet Paul Valéry and singer-songwriter Georges Brassens were born and buried just stroll on Sunday morning through the streets of the city with its colourful facades or in Les Halles market where the people of Sète installed on terraces of restaurants and cafes enjoy a plate of Bouzigues oysters before ritually eating a tielle accompanied by a glass of Picpoul secluded between the Mediterranean to the east and the Étang de Thau to the west that the origins of the tielle should be sought more precisely in the small fishing port of Gaeta between Naples and Rome subsisted mainly on a kind of pizza made of dough But they noticed that the Spanish soldiers also made a similar pie Undoubtedly derived from Spanish empanadas it had the advantage of preventing the filling from drying out an important detail for fishermen and sailors staying several days at sea eventually appreciating it so much that they even created an earthenware mould to cook their pizzas covered with dough but it took nearly three centuries to get there During the second half of the 19th century many families of Italian fishermen from southern Italy driven out for economic reasons (the anchovy schools where they fished were depleted) the Mediterranean was abundant with anchovies protected by the Madonna of the Saint-Louis church They lived by their own customs and spoke Neapolitan they brought with them two culinary specialties: macaronade (a mixture of pasta and beef) and the “teglia,” which they would transform by adapting to local resources As these fishermen often had trouble making ends meet they sold fish but kept for the family meal small octopuses (called “pouffres”) that no one wanted and started using them to make tielle these fishermen rarely went down to town and the rest of Sète society where wealthy shipowners and wine merchants prospered was completely unaware of this poor man’s dish the energetic wife of an Italian fisherman the tielle would gradually leave the inner circle of immigrant families they had a stall by Civette bridge called ‘la Reine des Mers’ (‘Queen of the Seas’) frequented by the Sète high society,” says Sophie “She put them in small baskets and went around the markets.” The success of this “octopus pie” was so great that the baker’s oven that Adrienne used was no longer big enough son-in-law of Adrienne and grandfather of Sophie went to Marseille to buy a bigger oven which he installed on the ground floor of their home Adrienne’s production then expanded and soon the notoriety of the tielle de Sète grew but her many children and grandchildren have kept her legacy alive the tielle’s fame has spread well beyond Sète versions often manufactured far from Sète are sold in supermarkets all over France the only positive aspect of selling in supermarkets is that it has allowed the tielle to be known outside of Sète whose workshop employs half a dozen people “What cannot be reproduced on an industrial scale I make it myself because the recipe is secret “The products are local whenever possible except for tomatoes “We prefer Mediterranean octopus and squid but it depends on the period and production “They are more expensive and scarcer than before because the Spanish buy a lot.” Sophie’s policy of authenticity obviously pays off because her shop is always mobbed “We recommend eating them within three days because we don’t use preservatives,” she says they’re essentially like when they left our kitchen.” To protect them from competition and imitations some “tiellists” have tried to obtain the PGI label (Protected Geographical Indication) for the precious pie was interrupted by the complexity of regulations the mother of two young children who dreams that they’ll perpetuate the tradition one day “I don’t need a PGI to affirm that the tielle is from Sète” she says it must remain what it has always been: a traditional Adrienne’s energetic great-granddaughter and her family contribute to its unique InfluencesPlaying nylon-string Bola Sete was a masterful improviser and technician with influences that ranged from Django Reinhardt to João Gilberto to Andres Segovia The great Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete (born Djalma De Andrade; 1923–1987) carved out a unique niche in the late 1950s in Brazil and the ’60s in the U.S. where he first gained renown playing alongside horn titan Dizzy Gillespie then through a stint with pianist Vince Guaraldi with influences that ranged from jazz guitarists Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian to Brazilian players including Laurindo Almeida His popularity was both fueled by and fed the worldwide intertest in samba and bossa nova during that era You’ll find plenty of jazz extrapolations on both of those styles on this new set of live recordings of the trio of Bola Sete captured during visits to the Penthouse club in Seattle in 1966 each year represented by a disc in the CD version That means there are tunes by Bonfá and Antônio Carlos Jobim (including “Garota de Ipanema,” a faster take on the classic hit) and also a couple of Sete originals that explore samba and bossa The trio members are in perfect sync throughout giving each other both and space and support and etching expressive balladic lines the next What I frankly did not know nor expect is that Sete was so strongly influenced by his early classical guitar training in Rio (where he was born) and Sao Paolo Although I have not seen it mentioned in the various biographical profiles I’ve consulted it seems likely to me that he must have been influenced considerably by Andrés Segovia who during Sete’s early maturation as a guitarist was the first recording classical guitarist to perform Bach the first to embrace the works of Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos and the guitarist who set the standard for all who followed when it came to Spanish repertoire two of Villa-Lobos’ wonderful “Preludes,” Enrique Granados’ “Spanish Dance No 5,” Isaac Albéniz’s “Asturias,” Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona’s “Malagueña,” and Francisco Tárrega’s “Recuerdos de la Alhambra” —all are de facto standards of the modern classical guitar repertoire And though he doesn’t play them as perfectly as a contemporary classical guitar audience would probably expect (especially “Recuerdos,” with its unforgiving right-hand tremolo) it is still amazingly good and he must have blown many a mind in jazz clubs and concerts with those pieces He also shines on another of his originals “Flamenco Fantasy,” which dips into that bag quite nicely Two versions of Ellington’s “Satin Doll” show another side of his interpretive genius Bola Sete’s career didn’t end in the late ’60s. He recorded and performed sporadically and made at least two later albums worth checking out: Ocean (1975) co-produced by Sete admirer John Fahey for his Takoma label; and his final effort But the generous collection of tunes on Samba in Seattle captures him at his artistic peak and reveal an incomparable guitarist graced with tremendous depth Also worth noting here is the splendid album package which includes a 40-page booklet loaded with rare photos and illuminating writings and interviews with colleagues and admirers such as Carlos Santana This article originally appeared in the March/April 2022 issue of Acoustic Guitar magazine.
