Police say girls aged six and 11 sustained superficial wounds in attack close to their school near Strasbourg
A man has been arrested after two girls aged six and 11 were injured in a knife attack close to their school in the east of France.
The 11-year-old was stabbed outside school in the town of Souffelweyersheim, just outside Strasbourg, while the six-year-old was allegedly attacked by the same man nearby.
Both received superficial wounds, police said, adding that the suspect did not appear to have any known links to radicals and was not previously known to the security services. The girls were being treated in hospital.
Parents were later in the afternoon allowed to pick up children who had been confined to the school in the immediate aftermath of the attack.
The suspect, born in 1995, was arrested in the area where he is alleged to have attacked the second girl, police said. He did not have a knife in his hand and did not resist arrest, they said.
The attack came as the prime minister, Gabriel Attal, announced a series of measures aimed at cracking down on violence committed by schoolchildren against their peers. There was no indication so far that the suspect had a link with the school.
“I’m really scared. We’ve been reassured that the children are safe inside, but we don’t know when we’ll be able to get them back,” Sarah, the mother of an eight-year-old pupil, told AFP before the green light was given to collect the children.
“A friend called me. She saw the commotion in front of the school as she passed by. Her reflex was to call me so that I could pick up my son.”

A suspect has now been arrested in the area of the incident
did not resist arrest nor did he have a knife in his hand
the force also said there has so far been no suggestion he had any links with the school
It added that he does not appear to have any known links to radicals and was not known to security services before the attack
Children were reportedly confined to the school in the aftermath and picked up by parents later in the afternoon
Before the schoolchildren were allowed to be collected
We’ve been reassured that the children are safe inside

It comes as tensions are running high in French schools
with prime minister Gabriel Attal announcing a number of measures as part of a crackdown on violence committed by schoolchildren against their peers
Just this month, a 14-year-old schoolgirl was left in a coma after being brutally assaulted by three teenagers in the southern city of Montpellier
The teenager was attacked on 2 April outside Arthur Rimbaud college in the district of La Mosson-La Paillade
The girl later came out of the medically induced coma but remained “disturbed” and “traumatized”
Meanwhile, in October, the president’s office said France was set to mobilise up to 7,000 soldiers to increase security around the country after a teacher was fatally stabbed and three other people wounded in a school attack by a former student.

Jamaican basketballer Kentan Facey drifted around for a couple seasons before joining French Pro-B league club Souffelweyersheim at the beginning of last season
Facey had an outstanding first season with the club
and with the new season just on the horizon
the Trelawny native is looking to improve on what he did last term
“Last year was good for me personally
It was their first year in a higher division
they won the lower league and got a chance to move up
The expectation was very high once the season started and I started out really well
so my expectations kind of changed as the season went on
I took on a bit more responsibility and I was able to contribute on the offensive and defensive side of it
as I got to show what I could do on the court,” Facey said
Souffelweyersheim were sitting in one of the play-off spots when the previous season was cancelled
with Facey being one of the team’s outstanding performers during the club’s bid for a play-off berth
despite his increasing importance to the team
“I felt I performed at a solid level last year
Now that I have a bit more experience in this league
it’s for me to help the team as much as I can
and I feel I can use this season to improve and show more of what I am capable of doing in terms of being a leader and a player that can contribute on the offensive and defensive end
“I believe I can step up to that leadership role
I also try to impart some knowledge that I learned last year to some of the new guys playing in the league for the first time,” Facey noted
“But my goal (this season) is not to go below what I did last year
I will try to go upwards with those numbers
And even though I haven’t set targets
I know I don’t want to go below the numbers I had last year.”
The 27-year-old said they had a great team that could have challenged for the title last season
and with a team that many observer believe is better this season
he thinks they have an opportunity to make a big impression
“When the pandemic came we were in a play-off position
so we were in a position to make the play-offs
I think we have a real good team this season
Some might say we are better than last year
but that will be decided as the season goes along
as talent on paper does not always equates to talent on the court
But I feel we are in a good spot to make another play-off push,” he said
