can stand in the presence of these graves without the most profound emotion
These men who lie here are men of unique breed
Their like has not been seen since the far days of crusades
Never before have men crossed the seas to a foreign land to fight for a cause of humanity which they did not pretend was particularly their own but knew was the cause of humanity and of mankind
And when they came they found comrades for their courage and their devotion
They found armies of liberty already in the field—men who
though they had gone through three years of fiery trial
men seasoned in the bloody service of liberty
the men of America gave that Neatest of all gifts
It will always be a treasured memory on the part of those who knew and loved these men that the testimony of everybody who saw them in the field of action was their unflinching courage
their full consciousness of the high cause they had come to serve
It is delightful to learn from those who saw these men fight and saw them waiting in the trenches for the summons to the fight that they had a thought of the spirit as well as a physical might
and those of us who know and love America know that they were discovering to the whole world the true spirit and devotion to their motherland
It was America who came in the person of these men and who will forever be grateful that she was so represented
And it is the more delightful to entertain these thoughts because we know that these men
sleeping with the spirits of those who thought the same thoughts and entertained the same aspirations
The noble women of Suresnes have given evidence of the loving sense with which they received these dead as their own
and that constantly through all the months that have gone by the mothers at home should know that there were mothers here who remembered and honored their dead
You have just heard in the beautiful letter from M
Clemenceau what I believe to be the real message of France to us on a day like this
and I have no doubt that if our British comrades were here they would speak in the same spirit and in the same language
For the beauty of this war is that it has brought a new partnership and a new comradeship and a new understanding into the field of the effort of the Nation
But it would be no profit to us to eulogize these illustrious dead if we did not take to heart the lesson which they have taught us
They are dead; they have done their utmost to show their devotion to a great cause
and they have left us to see to it that that cause shall not be betrayed
It is our privilege and our high duty to consecrate ourselves afresh on a day like this to the objects for which they fought
It is not necessary that I should rehearse to you what these objects were
These men did not come across the sea merely to defeat Germany and her associated powers in the war
They came to defeat forever the things for which the Central Powers stood
the sort of power they meant to assert in the world
selfish domination which they meant to establish
to see to it that there should never be a war like this again
to use our proper weapons of counsel and agreement to see to it that there never is such a war again
The nation that should now fling out of this common concord of counsel would betray the human race
So it is our duty to take and maintain the safeguards which will see to it that the mothers of America and the mothers of France and England and Italy and Belgium and all other suffering nations should never be called upon for this sacrifice again
though they did not in their councils conceive it
is the great instrument which we have just erected in the League of Nations
The League of Nations is the covenant of governments that these men shall not have died in vain
I like to think that the dust of those sons of America who were privileged to be buried in their mother country will mingle with the dust of the men who fought for the preservation of the Union
as those men gave their lives in order that America might be united
these men have given their lives in order that the world might be united
Those men gave their lives in order to secure the freedom of mankind
and I look forward to an age when it will be just as impossible to regret the results of their labor as it is now impossible to regret the result of the labor of those men who fought for the union of the States
I look for the time when every man who now puts his counsel against the united service of mankind under the League of Nations will be just as ashamed of it as if he now regretted the union of the States
that the airs of an older day are beginning to stir again
that the standards of an old order are trying to assert themselves again
There is here and there an attempt to insert into the counsel of statesmen the old reckoning of selfishness and bargaining and national advantage which were the roots of this war
and any man who counsels these things advocates a renewal of the sacrifice which these men have made; for if this is not the final battle for right there will be another that will be final
Let these gentlemen who suppose that it is possible for them to accomplish this return to an order of which we are ashamed and that we are ready to forget realize they can not accomplish it
and the peoples of the world are in the saddle
Private counsels of statesmen can not now and can not hereafter determine the destinies of nations
If we are not the servants of the opinion of mankind
and this age is an age which looks forward
not backward; which rejects the standard of national selfishness that once governed the counsels of nations and demands that they shall give way to a new order of things in which only the questions will be
“Is it right?” “Is it just?” “Is it in the interest of mankind?”
This is a challenge that no previous generation ever dared to give ear to
So many things have happened so fast in the last four years that I do not think many of us realize what it is that has happened
Think how impossible it would have been to get a body of responsible statesmen seriously to entertain the idea of the organization of a league of nations four years ago
And think of the change that has taken place
I was told before I came to France that there would be confusion of counsels about this thing
I found the statesmen with whom I was about to deal united in the idea that we must have a league of nations; that we could not merely make a peace settlement and then leave it to make itself effectual
but that we must conceive some common organization by which we should give our common faith that this peace would be maintained and the conclusions at which we had arrived should be made as secure as the united counsels of all the great nations that fought against Germany could make them
and that is the proof that there shall never be a war like this again
that the spirits of these men are not buried with their bones
I hope—I believe—that their spirits are present with us at this hour
I hope that I feel the compulsion of their presence
I hope that I realize the significance of their presence
They would not remember what you are talking about today
which they left with their high hope and purpose
They would remember the terrible field of battle
They would remember what they constantly recalled in times of danger
and how worth while it was to give their lives for it
“Forget all the little circumstances of the day
Be ashamed of the jealousies that divide you
have died to bring the counsels of men together
and we remind you what America said she was born for
She was born to make this great gift a common gift
She was born to show men the way of experience by which they might realize this gift and maintain it
and we abjure you in the name of all the great traditions of America to make yourselves soldiers now once for all in this common cause
where we need wear no uniform except the uniform of the heart
clothing ourselves with the principles of right
and we invite you into the comradeship of liberty and of peace.’” Let us go away hearing these unspoken mandates of our dead comrades
I beg you to realize the compulsion that I myself feel that I am under
I advised the Congress to declare that a state of war existed
Shall I—can I—ever speak a word of counsel which is inconsistent with the assurances I gave them when they came over
and that is his living spirit to a service that is not easy
to resist counsels that are hard to resist
to stand against purposes that are difficult to stand against
consecrated in spirit of the men who were once my comrades
and who left me under eternal bonds of fidelity.”

French bakers have taken the record for the longest baguette ever made

Dough mixers at the ready: A group of 12 bakers in northern France is aiming to break the world record for the longest-ever baguette this weekend
The record-breaking bake is set to be made at the Suresnes Baguette Show (organised by the Confédération nationale de la boulangerie-pâtisserie française
which is taking place in Suresnes (Hauts-de-Seine
The baking itself is taking place on the Terrasse du Fécheray observation deck
a baguette that measures more than 132.62 metres long
which has been held by bakers in Italy since June 16
The bakers say they are aiming to “bring the record home”

The baguette will take around eight hours to bake
and - to successfully beat the record - must be at least 5 cm thick along its entire length
“I hope we get the record in France, that everything goes well, and lots of people show up…to encourage us,” said Sylvain Lecarpentier
who has been baking bread in Suresnes for 14 years
and is one of the local bakers taking part
the record bid will be submitted to the Guinness World Record group
who will then confirm or deny if the bread has smashed the record.
Part of the baguette will then be cut up and spread with chocolate spread favourite Nutella and shared with the public
The other part will be distributed to people who are living on the streets and suffering from food insecurity

Parisian bakers have claimed victory over rivals in Italy who created a baguette almost 133 metres long in 2019
For the past five years, bragging rights over the world’s longest baguette have belonged not to the residents of a small village or a city in France
but rather to a clutch of bakers 500 miles away in Como
On Sunday a crop of 12 bakers from France set out to rectify this
shaping and baking their way back to victory
Some 14 hours later, their efforts were declared a success. “The world record for the longest baguette has been broken,” the municipality of Suresnes, in the western suburbs of Paris, wrote on its social media account. “The baguette made today in Suresnes measures 140.53m!!!!”
The bakers had begun toiling at 3am in the hope of beating the standing record of 132.62 metres
“In Italy?” one local told newspaper Le Parisien this week as he emerged from a bakery
If there’s one record that should belong to us in France
The sentiment was echoed among the bakers who gathered at Suresnes’ Terrasse du Fécheray observation deck
where their record-breaking attempt unfolded against a backdrop of sweeping views of Paris and the Eiffel Tower
“I hope that we’ll be able to recover the record for France,” Sylvain Lecarpentier, one of those taking part, had written in a post on social media in the lead up to the event

organisers laid out the gruelling challenge that the bakers were up against
and then baked in front of the public in a rolling oven under a tent,” it said
which had to be at least 5cm thick along its entire length
was expected to take about eight hours to bake
Some 13 hours after the bakers began, the municipality said the baguette was complete. “Now the big question is: how big is our #baguette?,” it asked on social media
adding in a photo of the baguette as it was being measured
The baguette will now be cut up to be shared among the public
as well as distributed to people living on the streets of Suresnes

'Here on the revered grounds of Suresnes American Cemetery lie more than 1,500 U.S
service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War.'
Trump said the patriots 'embody the timeless virtues' of France and the United States: 'honor and courage; strength and valor; love and loyalty; grace and glory

Donald Trump is now on his way from Paris to the United States
where he arrives in the evening on the same day
He attended an internationally broadcast gathering for world leaders at the Arc de Triomphe and lunched with his counterparts earlier on Sunday before driving a half-hour outside of the city to Suresnes for the invite-only ceremony commemorating the end of WWI
The speech closed out an awkward chapter in his relationship with the host nation's president that began when Trump blasted him on Twitter as he arrived at Orly airport late on Friday
Trump's rising feud with Emmanuel Macron boiled on Sunday as the French leader forcefully denounced nations 'looking after their own interests' and decried nationalist policies like the ones the American president has embraced
Macron specifically referred to the 'selfishness of nations only looking after their own interests' in remarks at an Armistice Day event in Paris that Trump and other world leaders attended
'Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism
Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism by saying our interests first
And what is essential— its moral values,' he said in an English-language translation of the speech he delivered with Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin sitting in the front row
saying that he and the first lady 'were deeply honored to be the guests' of the French government at the event that morning
Trump and Macron have been sparring over comments that Macron made last week about his desire to form a European army
president said in a stinging tweet that Macron's comments were 'very insulting' as he landed in Paris on Friday evening with the first lady

The leaders later attended a luncheon at Elysee Palace with other heads of state as part of a program that Macron is hosting in France this weekend commemorating the cessation of hostilities in World War One
Donald and Melania Trump skipped an arrival ceremony at the residence of the French president earlier in the day and did not walk down the Champs-Elysees with fellow leaders
They remained inside the car and out of the rain until after visiting leaders and Macron lined up under a covered seating area
President Trump greeted President Macron again -- having already sat down with him at Elysee and across from him at a dinner for dignitaries that took place on Saturday -- and took his place nearby in the front row of a riser below the arc

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told DailyMail.com in response to an inquiry about Trump's delayed arrival
and the possibility that Trump was meeting with Putin during the time that he was missing
'Due to security protocols the President arrived separately,' she said
without commenting on the possibility that he was talking privately with the Russian leader

Bells tolled in Paris on Sunday in remembrance of the cessation of fighting that concluded at 11:00 in the morning on Nov
The United States entered the war on April 6
1917 in response to a declaration of war request against Germany from President Woodrow Wilson
but Europe was again thrown into chaos two decades later with WWII
The two sides have become close allies in the nearly 75 years since the fighting began
Macron and Merkel entered the ceremony in Paris on Sunday as part of a united front after walking hand-in-hand through Compiègne on Saturday
In remarks that were broadcast in French and translated to English
Macron appeared to take a shot at Trump's self-proclaimed nationalism
'The lesson of the Great War can not be that of resentment between peoples
nor should the past be forgotten,' Macron said during the broadcast that included a military fly-over
'It is our deeply rooted obligation to think of the future
they fought over Macron's proposal to draft a 'true European army' that would protect the continent's interests in the face of a recoiling United States
He suggested the fighting force would also serve as a check on U.S

Trump said the comment was 'very insulting' and ignored the United States' generous contributions to Europe's defense via the North Atlantic Treaty Organization
the leaders proclaimed themselves to be 'very good friends' at a one-on-one meeting
even as Trump's body language told a different story
It’s very important to us to have a strong Europe
And whichever way we can do it the best and most efficient would be something that we both want,' Trump said
'But it’s unfair to have the European security today being assured just by the United States
'That’s why I do believe that we need more European capacities
in order to take this part of the burden,' he assessed
'When President Trump has to protect or to defend one of the states of the United States
or another government of Europe to finance it.'
President Trump visited Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial after cancelling a trip to Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial on Saturday when a bad weather call grounded Marine One
He and first lady Melania Trump had planned to visit the memorial for American marines near the Belleau Wood battlefield
however their program was nixed at the last minute due to a storm that would have prevented them from helicoptering to the site that is more than an hour's drive from Paris
Despite the heavy security presence a topless female protester was able to break through near the President's motorcade
Trump caused controversy on Saturday after his trip to the Ainse-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial was called off because of the rain
'The President and First Lady's trip to Ainse-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial has been canceled due to scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather,' the White House said
'An American delegation led by Chief of Staff General John Kelly and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joe Dunford will attend on their behalf.'
The site honors United States Army's 2nd Division and an attack it led on the Germans on June 6
The skirmishes ended 20 days later on June 26
According to the American Battle Monuments Commission
8,100 soldiers died in the wooded area near Belleau
Macron gifted Trump with a sapling from the area during a state visit in April
Trump was blasted abroad and at home for skipping the trip to the memorial and was compared to Canada's Justin Trudeau
who last year visited monuments in France under a steady downpour
president sidestepped the controversy on Sunday but gave a nod to the battle site in his speech at Suresnes
'Among those buried here are legendary Marines who fought in the Battle of Belleau Wood,' he said
'In that treacherous forest and the surrounding fields
and Allied Forces fought -- and they fought through hell -- to turn the tide of the war
And that's what they did -- they turned the tide of the war,' he stated
