Estonia’s Johannes Erm won the decathlon and Colombia’s Martha Araujo was victorious in the heptathlon at the Decastar meeting
this season’s final World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold event
In a year that has included a European title win
sixth place at the Olympics and bronze at the World Indoor Championships
Erm achieved the second-best score of his career – 8589 points – to end his season on a high
That performance clinched him the win by 72 points ahead of Sander Skotheim of Norway
while Sven Roosen of the Netherlands was third on 8293
Araujo has improved with every competition this year and in Talence she scored a South American record of 6429 points
That followed the then lifetime best of 6386 she set to secure seventh place at the Paris Olympics
while she also scored 6329 at the Colombian Championships in June and 6274 at the Ibero American Championships in May
That PB performance in Talence put her 156 points ahead of defending champion Emma Oosterwegel of the Netherlands
who had finished joint seventh with Araujo in Paris
while USA’s Michelle Atherley was third on 6267

It ended up being close at the top in the decathlon
Germany’s Manuel Eitel got the strongest start
Skotheim launched himself into the lead as he soared 7.70m in the long jump
Belgium’s Niels Pittomvils and Roosen were the two athletes to surpass 15 metres in the shot put
Pittomvils throwing 15.15m and Roosen 15.06m
That moved Roosen up to second just 15 points behind Eitel
with Skotheim third only another 10 points back and Erm a close fourth
Skotheim then soared ahead as he cleared 2.11m in the high jump
and ran 47.51 in a 400m topped by Roosen’s 46.72
The first day ended with Skotheim on 4444 points
Belgium’s Jente Hauttekeete had moved up into third place on 4241
That order was maintained after the first event on day two
Skotheim then held on to his lead after a 44.75m discus throw but Erm moved up into second with a leading mark of 47.25m
A big PB 5.37m vault by Erm made the difference
He was the sole athlete to manage five metres or more and so leapt above Skotheim overall
Erm was then one of three athletes to surpass 60 metres in the javelin as he threw 60.47m to Jose Fernando Ferreira Santana’s 64.87m
With one event – the 1500m – to go
with Erm running 4:33.04 and holding on to secure victory with 8589 points ahead of Skotheim (4:22.74) with 8517
Roosen (4:24.91) moved up into third on 8293
Araujo opened her heptathlon campaign with 13.12 in the 100m hurdles
Araujo then cleared a PB of 1.75m in the high jump
adding two centimetres to her previous best
Germany’s Vanessa Grimm had the best mark in the shot put
as Araujo managed 13.38m and then clocked 24.31 in the 200m
That left her on 3726 points at the end of the first day
Poland’s Adrianna Sulek-Schubert was third on 3638 and Sweden’s Lovisa Karlsson fourth on 3610
Araujo and Karlsson continued their impressive form at the start of day two
leaping 6.49m and 6.55m respectively in the long jump
who did not return to competition following the 200m
Germany’s Marie Dehning and Oosterwegel dominated the javelin
Araujo also surpassed 50 metres with 50.64m and that maintained her leading position overall
with Atherley another 58 points off with one event to go
but Araujo’s 2:19.80 was more than enough to clinch her the win as she scored her total of 6429
with Atherley third on 6267 and Karlsson fourth on 6111

Global medallists Lindon Victor and Emma Oosterwegel will be among the athletes looking to end their seasons on a high at the Decastar meeting
Grenada’s Victor claimed Olympic decathlon bronze in Paris
matching the colour of medal he secured at the World Championships in Budapest last year
while Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Oosterwegel of the Netherlands finished seventh in the heptathlon in Paris
Now they return to Talence on the hunt for further victory
Victor achieved 8550 points when winning his Decastar title two years ago and that remains the third-best score of his career behind the national record of 8756 he set in Budapest and the 8711 he managed in Paris
Oosterwegel’s PB of 6590 was set when she claimed her Olympic medal in Tokyo
with the score of 6495 that she set to win in Talence last year remaining the second-best mark of her career
In 2022 she was a joint Decastar winner alongside Ivona Dadic
and the Austrian athlete also returns to Talence this weekend
The decathlon field features 12 athletes who have surpassed 8000 points in the 10-event discipline
with Victor joined by fellow 8600 point-plus athletes Johannes Erm of Estonia
Sander Skotheim of Norway and Sven Roosen of the Netherlands
Erm won the European title in Rome in June
setting a PB of 8764 that puts him third on this season’s top list and 14th on the world all-time list
He followed that with 8569 to finish sixth at the Paris Olympics and also claimed world indoor heptathlon bronze in Glasgow in March
Talence gives him the opportunity for a rematch with Skotheim
who claimed heptathlon silver ahead of Erm in Glasgow but finished runner-up to his Estonian rival in Rome
at the Paris Olympics as he scored a national record of 8607.
Germany’s Manuel Eitel has finished runner-up at the past two editions of Decastar and will be looking to go one better this time around
Also returning are USA’s Devon Williams and Belgium’s Jente Hauttekeete
while Brazil’s Jose Fernando Ferreira Santana joins them on the entry list following a PB performance of 8213 in Paris
Oosterwegel and Dadic are among 15 athletes in the field who have surpassed 6000 points in their careers so far
thanks to the 6552 score she achieved at the European Championships in Berlin in 2018
She will be looking to rebound after falling in the 100m hurdles in Ratingen in June as she contests her first heptathlon since then
Prior to that she scored 6115 at the Hypomeeting in Gotzis in May
Her compatriot Verena Mayr also returns to Talence and as it was for Dadic
Gotzis was the scene of Mayr’s most recent full heptathlon as she scored 6196
Poland’s Adrianna Sulek-Schubert gave birth to her son in February
Colombia’s Martha Araujo secured seventh place at the Paris Olympics with a PB of 6386 and she also scored 6329 at the Colombian Championships in June and 6274 at the Ibero American Championships in May
Another athlete looking to make a statement will be USA’s Michelle Atherley
while Germany’s Vanessa Grimm will also want to build on her Hypomeeting performance

A suburb of Bordeaux has become the first municipality in France where residents and visitors have the option to do their shopping by paying with cryptocurrencies
and since the summer a bunch of its local merchants have signed up to offer this option to their customers
There are already 18 stores in Talence that accept crypto as payment
and the payment option was made possible thanks to an app developed by a French fintech startup called Lizy
The latter has picked the Bordeaux suburb to be one of the first testbeds for the viability of crypto payments
The app removes the need for an intermediary “ATM” where users have to convert their cryptoassets into cash before going shopping
the simple scan of a QR Code (generated in a few seconds by the merchant) allows the approximately 300 million cryptocurrency holders in the world to pay with an online wallet such as Binance or Crypto.com
and they get the equivalent in euros at the current rate
According to the Talence economic development agency which has implemented the system
the move was motivated by a need to reach out to a growing customer segment that has part of its wealth tied up in cryptocurrencies
12% of French people hold some cryptoassets and yet they don’t see any real-life application apart from speculating with them
a large chunk of the crypto owners (24%) are young people aged between 18 and 24 and the developers would like to encourage them to spend their crypto money and circulate it in the economy

Decathlete Johannes Erm has one more competition to go this season
was crowned European decathlon champion in Rome earlier in the summer and ahead of a successful olympics
told ERR after the Olympics that Erm had a strong chance of becoming the season's top performer in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Combined Events Tour
in which each athlete's three best decathlon scores of the season are counted
scoring 8,462 points in the Götzis decathlon in Austria in May and 8,764 points at the European Championships in Rome a month later
The season's final competition will indeed be the Decastar event in Talence
Karel Tilga won the tour last season and $30,000 in prize money with it
Sydney Olympics gold medalist Erki Nool won the tour in both 1998 and 2000 and triumphed in the "silver category" in 2001
Maicel Uibo won the silver-level competition too
while Mikk Pahapill (2011) and Larissa Netšeporuk (2003) secured victories in the bronze-level men's and women's events
who made the top 12 in the decathlon at the recent Paris Olympics

This architecture is also a continuation of the local history, of the «Girolle», the popular house designed by the «École Bordelaise» in the 60s. The lightness of its roofs, their wide overhangs, the play of transparencies, the invitation of natural light as well as the invitation of the landscape itself, the constructive sincerity assumed as well as the use of wood as an architectural material are all common qualities with this little house often found in the sandy pinewoods of the region.

The Decastar in Talence welcomes athletes for the final World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting of the season this weekend (17-18)
when a number of leading heptathletes and decathletes will be looking to end the year on a high
Nine heptathletes with 6000-point-plus PBs and 12 athletes who have broken 8000 points in the decathlon will compete at the Stade Pierre Paul Bernard
scene of Kevin Mayer’s world decathlon record of 9126 in 2018
This time the fields feature Olympic bronze medallist Emma Oosterwegel and Commonwealth champion Lindon Victor as they look to move up the World Athletics Combined Events Tour standings
currently topped by Simon Ehammer and Adrianna Sulek
Netherlands’ Oosterwegel will want to rebound after the European Championships in Munich
where her competition came to a premature end when she fell in the 100m hurdles
That came after a seventh-place finish at the World Championships in Oregon
150 points off her PB set when claiming bronze at last year’s Olympics
Among her competition in Talence will be Austria’s Ivona Dadic and Switzerland’s Geraldine Ruckstuhl
the European Championships did not go to plan for Dadic as she was disqualified in the 200m and the 2018 world pentathlon silver medallist will be looking to complete her first heptathlon of the year
will also be looking to finish her first heptathlon of the year when she returns to the scene of her 6391 PB set in 2018
Other athletes with PBs over 6000 joining them are USA’s 2019 NCAA champion Ashtin Zamzow-Mahler
Czech Republic's Dorota Skrivanova and Italy’s Sveva Gerevin
fresh from winning his second Commonwealth Games title in Birmingham
which followed his 8474 points for fifth at the World Championships in Oregon
His national record of 8539 was set in 2017 and he has surpassed 8300 points in each season that he has contested the decathlon since
Victor will go up against Germany’s 2017 world decathlon bronze medallist Kai Kazmirek
Norway’s Markus Rooth and France’s Axel Hubert
who scored his 8580 PB when finishing fourth at the 2016 Olympics in Rio
topped the standings in the Combined Events Challenge last year
This season he was unable to finish his competition in Ratingen but went on to finish fifth in Gotzis
12th at the World Championships and eighth at the European Championships
Bastien was sixth in the heptathlon at the World Indoor Championships and set his decathlon PB of 8485 in Eugene last year
while Helcelet was 11th in Munich and set his best of 8335 in 2017
proved his strong form at the European Championships
and will be looking to build on that in Talence
European U23 bronze medallist Rooth also set his PB this year
the 20-year-old scoring a national record of 8307 when winning in Grosseto in May
while Hubert returns to action for the first time since Arona in June
Other entries with 8000-point-plus PBs on their CVs are Germany’s Manuel Eitel
Germany’s Malik Diakite and USA’s Jack Flood
Also joining them is Belgium’s 2021 European U20 champion and world U20 silver medallist Jente Hauttekeete
there are also wild card entries for the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 on offer for winners of this season’s World Athletics Combined Events Tour
Current standings
World champion Kevin Mayer broke the decathlon world record* at the Decastar meeting in Talence on Sunday (16)
scoring 9126 at the final IAAF Combined Events Challenge fixture of 2018
Had it not been for his three fouls in the long jump at last month’s European Championships in Berlin
Mayer most likely wouldn’t have competed at the Decastar meeting
the 26-year-old was looking redemption in Talence
a south-western city in the suburb of Bordeaux
Just as USA’s Dan O’Brien had done in 1992 after famously no-heighting in the pole vault at the US Olympic Trials that year and therefore missing out on the Olympic Games
Mayer gained redemption in the best possible way: by smashing the world record
coming just seven hours after Eliud Kipchoge clocked a stunning 2:01:39 at the Berlin Marathon
Mayer started the second day of competition with a tally of 4563 points
140 behind Ashton Eaton’s first day total when he set his 9045 world record three years ago at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing
But Mayer is notably a strong performer in the five events on the second day of a decathlon
The world indoor champion continued that momentum throughout the second day
Mayer’s time was just 0.04 outside the PB he set in Paris earlier this year
“It was tough to get going this morning,” said Mayer
“It was a nice head-to-head,” responded Abele
Mayer opened the discus with 46.41m before improving that to 48.72m in round two and 50.54m in round three
His throw was almost two metres shy of his lifetime best (52.38m) but was easily his best ever discus mark within a complete decathlon and was the farthest throw of the day
The world record was looking more and more likely with each event
but first Mayer would have to safely navigate his way through the pole vault
a discipline that has caught out many decathletes over the years
Mayer passed 5.15m and then easily cleared 5.25m
five centimetres better than his best ever vault within a combined events competition
he opted to stop vaulting to save his energy for the two remaining events
“Now we can start talking about the world record,” said Mayer
having tallied 7503 points after eight events
The Frenchman recorded his fourth win of the second day courtesy a massive third-round throw of 71.90m in the javelin
more than a metre farther than his previous best
Mayer had already amassed 8421 – a score that eventually would have been enough to win by 111 points
He needed just a 4:49 clocking in the 1500m to break Eaton’s world record
Mayer’s PB for the distance was some 31 seconds faster than that
#Decastar2018 Revivez le final du 1500m qui a installé Kévin Mayer sur le toit du monde ! Des frissons !!! 📺😍 #RMCSport2 pic.twitter.com/E1Lz2IdjS8
Exhausted and encouraged by a massive crowd
he covered the final event in 4:36.11 to tally 9126 points
improving Eaton’s previous mark by 81 points
It was the biggest single improvement on a decathlon world record since Tomas Dvorak added 103 points to the mark in 1999
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time,” said Mayer after becoming the first Frenchman to hold the decathlon world record
“We live for moments like this that are simply incredible
I don’t have any more tears left because I was crying so much before the 1500m.”
overtook Norwegian Martin Roe in the IAAF Combined Events Challenge standings to clinch his first series title
That was an incredible display of ability! I’m super happy for @mayer_decathlon & even more for the future of the decathlon
Important thing to me has always been to keep pushing the limit and inspiring others to do the same
The more 9k can become commonplace the better
World silver medallist Carolin Schäfer held a 17-point lead after the first day of the heptathlon
but was temporarily overtaken after the first event of the second day
Katerina Cachova of the Czech Republic leapt to 6.28m to post the second best long jump mark of the day behind Ukraine’s Daryna Sloboda
47 centimetres short of the PB she set last year
Cachova held an 18-point lead over Schäfer
but the German is a far superior javelin thrower and she proved as much with a throw of 51.58m to regain the lead
Cachova stayed in relatively close contact with a season’s best of 46.39m
but she dropped to third overall as Geraldine Ruckstuhl sent her javelin out to 55.11m
Schäfer had a lead of 82 and 83 points respectively over her Swiss and Czech rivals
Schäfer clocked 2:15.10 over 800m to secure her second win in Talence after 2014
Schäfer’s tally of 6457 moved her to the top of the challenge standings for the third year in a row
displacing USA’s Erica Bougard as the leader
“The Decastar has a really special atmosphere,” said Schäfer
Competing at this late stage of the season was really hard
and I’m ready for the holidays.”
adding 34 points to her own national record

Kevin Mayer will return to the scene of his decathlon world record when he competes at the Decastar meeting in Talence on 22-23 June
while fellow world champion Nifassatou Thiam will make her debut at the IAAF Combined Events Challenge meeting
Mayer stunned the athletics world last year in Talence when he put together a series of outstanding performances to smash the decathlon world record with a score of 9126
has never competed in Talence before but will likely be keen to produce a big score ahead of the defence of her world title later in the year
Often held at the end of the season after major championships
this year’s Decastar meeting will be held in late June
three months ahead of the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019

The decathlon at last weekend’s Decastar meeting in Talence
the final competition of the 2016 IAAF Combined Events Challenge
featured athletes who have stood on Olympic podiums and medallists from world and continental championships
none of them could hold a candle to 20-year-old newcomer Pierce LePage
The Canadian entered the 1500m finale with a 138-point lead after setting three personal bests
He posted another near-PB in the last event
but his 4:58.77 saw him drop down to third overall
His score of 8027 made him one of the youngest decathletes in the world to score in excess of 8000 points this year
It was vindication of a decision LePage made in summer 2015
He had just completed his first year of a Law degree at York University in Toronto
He had also just won the Canadian U20 title with a national U20 record of 7179
and there was a lot of track,” he recalled
“It was hard to focus on one thing.”
He reached the decision to suspend his studies and focus solely on athletics; still fairly new to the world of combined events
His first forays into athletics were in the triple jump
He announced his talent by breaking a 27-year-old provincial record while competing for Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby
At the age of 16 he started training under his current coach
do you want to do an octathlon?’ I said
why not?’ I had no idea what I was getting in to
Then I was having some knee problems so I thought maybe I’d do the decathlon the next year
His progress since then has been impressive
with his national junior title in 2015 underlining his potential
Yet few would have expected the year that he enjoyed in 2016
“Last September we were setting our goals,” he said
“I was thinking I wanted to score 7500
Despite not having “too much of an indoor season” because of those injuries
in May he ran 20.83 for the 200m in Toronto
LePage said he can’t pinpoint a reason for his improved speed
“I just noticed that I was doing so much better
I kind of moved my goal [for the season] to 7900 points
Another recalibration of what he thought possible came at the Pan American Combined Events Cup in Ottawa in June
After seven personal bests in seven events
he was leading an experienced field and was on course to surpass 8000 points
But then his lack of experience came to the fore in the pole vault
His response spoke volumes: he posted PBs in the remaining two events to amass 7059 for 10th place
“I realised that on a perfect day I could make the Olympics,” said LePage
who needed to reach the qualifying standard of 8100 if he were to make it to Rio
“I went to Moncton two weeks later to try to make it
LePage still got to go to Rio after being chosen as a future star through the RBC Training Ground programme in Canada
he was given a glimpse into the arena of elite competition – tours of the Canada House
“So much work your nation puts into supporting all their athletes
Hopefully if I go to Tokyo I’ll be more prepared.”
His Talence score lifted him to seventh on the Canadian all-time list
Just like the speed he discovered early in the year
LePage said he can’t isolate any one thing that led to his emergence this year
“I think it’s just working hard,” he mused
LePage is still developing physically – he stands at 2.01m (6ft 7in) after growing an inch in the last year
He plans to add bulk to his lithe frame to help him adjust to the rigours of ten-event competition
“Right now it just feels like by the javelin my body just kinda shuts down,” he admitted
“Last year I just got introduced to weights
Hopefully next year I’m going to beef up.”
After exceeding his expectations this year
he is reluctant to put a limit on what is possible in 2017
“I know my goal is to make [the World Championships in] London

Commonwealth champion Lindon Victor broke his own Grenadian record with 8550 to win the decathlon at the Decastar meeting in Talence on Sunday (18)
winning the overall men’s title in the World Athletics Combined Events Tour in the process
The women’s Decastar heptathlon title
went right down to the wire as Emma Oosterwegel of the Netherlands and Ivona Dadic of Austria ended in a tie for victory
Victor was contesting his fourth decathlon of the year
having finished second in Götzis and fifth at the World Championships before his triumph at the Commonwealth Games
but he showed relatively little sign of fatigue in Talence at this late stage of the season
The 29-year-old opened his campaign with a wind-assisted 10.61 (3.1m/s) in the 100m
finishing second to Germany’s Manuel Eitel with 10.44
Switzerland’s Finley Gaio was third in 10.63
Gaio leapt into the lead after the long jump
That was seven centimetres farther than USA’s Steven Bastien
while Victor recorded 7.49m and Eitel 7.29m
Come the shot put it was Victor’s turn to launch ahead thanks to a 15.75m throw
almost a metre farther than any of his rivals
France’s Makenson Gletty recorded 14.88m and Eitel a 14.86m PB
Lithuania’s Edgaras Benkunskas topped the high jump with 2.08m
while Estonia’s Risto Lillemets and USA’s Jack Flood both cleared 2.05m and Victor 2.02m
Victor ended day one with a win in his 400m heat
clocking a PB of 48.20 for the day’s third-quickest time behind Germany’s Malik Diakite (47.74) and Gaio with (48.19)
giving the Grenadian an overnight score of 4438 and a 128-point lead over Gaio
Victor’s strong series continued on Sunday
starting the day with a 14.70 run in the 110m hurdles
just a few hundredths shy of his season’s best
an international-standard hurdler in his own right
giving him a brief lead before slipping down the leaderboard over the course of the day
throwing 51.00m – the best mark of the day – in the discus to regain the lead
Victor equalled his 4.80m season’s best in the pole vault and followed it with a 66.01m throw in the javelin
giving him a lead of almost 400 points going into the final event
following his 4.80m vault and a 60.51m javelin throw
climbed up to third place thanks to a 5.00m vault and 59.82m javelin throw
Diakite was a comfortable winner of the 1500m
but all eyes were on Victor and whether he’d do enough to break his own national record
bringing his score to 8550 – an 11-point improvement on his previous best
Eitel and Lillemets held on to their podium places
finishing second and third respectively with scores of 8193 and 8149
France’s Makenson Gletty was close behind in fourth (8141)
2018 world indoor pentathlon silver medallist Dadic started with 13.81 in the 100m hurdles
won by France’s Esther Turpin in 13.51 from Oosterwegel
Sweden’s Bianca Salming topped the high jump
clearing 1.86m as USA’s Ashtin Zamzow-Mahler managed 1.80m and Dadic and Turpin both went over 1.77m
Switzerland’s Geraldine Ruckstuhl leading the way with a PB throw of 14.68m
adding 10 centimetres to her previous best
Salming had the second best mark of 14.41m
while Oosterwegel threw 13.75m and Dadic 13.68m
Dadic clocking 24.11 to give her a day-one score of 3689
Dadic extended her lead in the first event of the second day
Oosterwegel launched her spear out to a lifetime best of 55.47m and catapulting herself into the lead
Dadic knew she had to finish a stride ahead of Oosterwegel in the final event
to claw back the points deficit and regain the lead
clocking 2:11.12 to Oosterwegel’s 2:11.78
but it was ‘only’ enough to bring her level with the Dutch all-rounder
The performance also elevated Oosterwegel up to third in the overall Combined Events Tour standings

His winning mark in Talence last month may not have been one of his highest scores to date
He was simply happy to get through the decathlon in one piece
In his previous decathlon three months prior
he picked up an ankle injury which ultimately meant that he had to forfeit competing at the European Championships in Zurich
where he hoped to improve on his fourth-place finish from four years ago
Instead he had to stay at home in Estonia and watch the action unfold on TV
the Decastar meeting in the French village of Talence gave the 31-year-old the opportunity to do exactly that
He bagged valuable points in the high jump on the first day after leaping 2.11m
That gap grew by another 41 points after the 110m hurdles
He produced the best mark of the competition in the discus
and then out-performed his Ukrainian rival once again in the javelin
In the 1500m he finished close enough to Kasyanov to hold on to pole position
scoring 8077 to secure his first decathlon victory since 2008
he beat three of the top-10 finishers from the European Championships
“At first the ankle injury I picked up in Kladno didn’t seem too serious
but it took a long time to heal and I didn’t want to compete at the European Championships if I wasn’t in good shape
“I was kind of surprised with the performance in Talence because I thought the amount of training I did before the competition wasn’t enough
But in the end I had trained well throughout the rest of the year and I think it paid off
But before the 1500m you always look at the standings and at that point I knew I had a chance to win
It wasn’t the first time Pahapill had overcome an injury
At the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Istanbul
Pahapill fell in the 60m hurdles and landed awkwardly on his shoulder
which put him out of action for a whole year
“The decathlon is very demanding and it takes time to progress,” said Pahapill
“I was setting personal bests every year between 2008 and 2011
but then at the World Indoors in 2012 I fell due to a faulty hurdle
I had two operations and lost the opportunity to compete at the London Olympics
I had to question whether it was the end of my career
“But after more than a year of hard work I was competing again and was able to compete at the World Championships in Moscow.”
In the Russian capital last year Pahapill finished 17th in the highest-quality decathlon competition of all time
His score of 8170 was the best he had managed in his four appearances at the World Championships
yet it was still more than 200 points shy of the 8398 PB he set in 2011
But Pahapill believes that his best days are yet to come
“He was my first motivator,” said Pahapill of his introduction to athletes
“He had a real passion for the combined events and he taught me a lot.”
When Pahapill represented Estonia at the 2002 IAAF World Junior Championships in Kingston
it was clear that he was destined to follow in his father’s footsteps and one day go beyond what Pahapill senior had achieved
Pahapill – aged just 21 – made his first big breakthrough
He won the decathlon and added more than 900 points to his PB
smashing through the 8000-point barrier in the process with his winning mark of 8149
he qualified for that year’s World Championships in Helsinki
He finished one place higher at the Olympic Games three years later
But his biggest breakthrough was yet to come
Still a relative unknown on the international scene
Pahapill instantly became one of the standout performers of the 2009 European Indoor Championships when he won the heptathlon title with a score of 6362
He had never before scored higher than 6000 points
but after setting indoor PBs in every event in Turin – including a 7.97m long jump which
was the best mark ever achieved in an indoor combined events competition – he ended the weekend at ninth place on the world indoor all-time list
The summer of 2009 didn’t quite go to plan
He no-heighted in the pole vault in his first decathlon of the year
and then recorded three fouls in the decathlon long jump at the World Championships in Berlin
he gained redemption in Talence at the end of the summer
He added 43 points to that mark at the 2010 European Championships
Then in 2011 he improved again to 8398 when finishing third in Gotzis
beaten only by two of the men who went on to win medals at that year’s World Championships
he was unable to replicate that kind of form in Daegu and he finished in ninth place
But he dreams of a decathlon when he is able to repeat what he achieved in Turin in 2009 by setting PBs in every event
“My ultimate goal is to put all of my best results together,” he said
“That would give me a big score.” 8900 to be exact
Coached by Lithuania’s 1997 world heptathlon bronze medallist Remigija Nazaroviene
Pahapill trains alongside two other Estonian decathletes
three-time World Championships representative Andres Raja (PB of 8119) and national champion Kaarel Joevali (PB of 7672)
“I have been working with Remigija for almost eight years now and she continues to help me progress as much as I can,” said Pahapill
“She is very passionate about the sport and has a lot of knowledge
She has helped me to overcome struggles which at times seemed impossible.”
So when asked if he could follow in his coach’s footsteps by winning a medal at next year’s IAAF World Championships in Beijing
having reached the highs and lows of the sport – simply said: “Anything is possible.”

World Champions Dvorak and Barber seek victory in the IAAF World Combined Events Challenge
The 1999 IAAF World Combined Events Challenge moves to Talence (FRA) this weekend for the final stage of a circuit that has witnessed great performances throughout the year
including earlier this year a new decathlon world record
Having completed three decathlons with a total score of more than 8700 points and an average incredible 8825,3 points
double World Champion and world record holder Tomas Dvorak is the uncontested leader of the 1999 IAAF Combined Events Challenge
The Czech is now aiming to win the traditional Décastar event in Talence (18-19 September) for the first time and better the meeting record currently held by the USA’s Dan O'Brien
Although Dvorak has taken part in the Décastar event four times
he has yet to win this particular competition
Dvorak declared he was not fully satisfied with his performance in Seville
"I would like to finish the season by keeping up my undefeated record and by scoring at least 100 more points than in Seville
I feel really good and moreover I will not be under any pressure."
At the IAAF World Championship Dvorak obtained 8744 points
second best performance in the world this year
Dvorak now hopes to better O'Brien's seven-year-old record for the Décastar meet of 8891 points
"If I could improve on his performance by at least one point
it would be a great finish to the season."
Germany’s Karin Ertl currently leads the Challenge with 18815 points
ahead of American Sheila Burrell (18667) and 1998 winner Urzula Wlodarczyk (18532)
The Challenge is decided on the basis of the total of the best three scores achieved by the contenders
The favourite for the Overall Challenge title is however another athlete
France’s Eunice Barber seems a likely candidate to take the lead in the IAAF World Combined Events Challenge after this weekend
who will be competing in front of her home crowd
is currently 9th in the standings but she has only taken part in two heptathlons so far this year
She won the European Cup in Prague with 6505 points and the World Championships in Seville with a personal and world best of 6861 points
Barber’s average of 6683 points is well above Sabine Braun’s 6424.5
The German has also only taken part in two heptathlons this year
but will still be another candidate for the Challenge podium should she achieve more than 6000 points in Talence
Barber who said she was delighted to end her superb season in front of her home crowd
would need a score of at least 6200 points to ensure herself victory in the Challenge and the $30,000 prize money awarded to winners
With the greatest all-round athletes present in Talence
the Décastar should be a fabulous and exciting conclusion to this year’s IAAF World Combined Events Challenge
Van Alphen and Yosypenko prevail in Talence -..
Making the transition from junior to senior athlete in any event is never simple and for heptathletes
the complexity of coming of age is multiplied by seven
who finished eighth at the World Championships last month
The Dutch athlete completed three heptathlons in 2015
closing her season at last weekend’s Decastar meeting in Talence
Though her total there of 6257 points was her lowest haul of her campaign
she was still more than content with her performance
after finishing the traditional lap of the track with all the other finishers
“I did not know what to expect before the heptathlon (in Talence) because it’s so late in the season
There were plenty of reasons to be cheerful.
Visser enjoyed a late-season flurry to finish third in the Bordeaux suburb and while more experienced athletes wilted in the late summer sun
Visser remained near the top throughout the two days
Competing in combined-event competition requires mental resolve
the maturity to move on from a poor showing and stay focused on the next event
she opened with a meeting record of 12.88 in the 100m hurdles
the third time she has run faster than 13 seconds this year
but showed the maturity and stamina to round off her weekend with another personal best of 2:13.08 in the 800m
“Second day was like the same as in Beijing: long jump and javelin were really not good
But then I was very happy that I could finish with a PB in the 800m
who won bronze in both the heptathlon and the 100m hurdles at the 2014 World Junior Championships
Beijing marked a first senior global championships
“I’d done the European Champs and the European Indoors so Beijing was not a lot different
she beat Olympic and now world champion Jessica Ennis-Hill
with a 100m hurdles personal best of 12.81
which puts her inside the top 25 on the world list for that individual event this year
She also set personal bests in the high jump and 800m (which she improved again in Talence) to amass 6344 points
It made her only the fourth heptathlete under the age of 21 to achieve a top-eight finish in World Championships history
She follows in the footsteps of the legendary Carolina Kluft (the champion in 2003 at just 20) and more recently
last year’s world leader Katarina Johnson-Thompson
“The atmosphere in Beijing at the Bird’s Nest was great
The first day was really good: PBs in the hurdles and high jump
my long jump was 30 centimetres behind my PB so
I was really disappointed after that.”
Visser’s best performance of the year came in Gotzis in May
I scored like 6110 points in Gotzis,” said Visser
some with bigger steps (big improvements in the throwing events)
I expected to score a big PB – but not that big
It was the first time that I really surprised myself.”
Her Gotzis score of 6467 puts her in the world’s top 10 for 2015
despite being two years younger than anyone else in that elite bracket
When pushed to explain her remarkable improvement
Visser is quick to praise her coach Bart Bennema and the all-weather set-up of the Dutch national athletics centre in Papendal
“It’s perfect for me,” added Visser
eats and goes on holiday with the heptathlete-cum-200m world champion Dafne Schippers
“My coach searched for someone who could help us
We worked together with Charles van Commenee and Rana Reider
I think that’s a good thing about my coach
It’s not like he wants to do everything by himself
He knows that some events he can coach better than others
he tries to find someone who can help.”
in addition to a weights programme that she says has made her stronger and faster
Visser doesn’t turn 21 until next February and doesn’t expect to do an indoor pentathlon in time to get an invite for the event at the IAAF World Indoor Championships
When she returns from a well-deserved holiday in Biarritz
the focus will also turn to the prospect of competing at a home European Championships in Amsterdam in July
and then the Rio 2016 Olympics Games just one month later
“I’ve made big steps and hopefully I can do that again next year.”
those steps could potentially translate into giant leaps on the biggest stage of all

Alex Leprêtre won the mile in 4:13.9 as Hannah Viner was fastest woman in 4:53.8
Callum Hawkins clocked 29:06 and Morag MacLarty 33:51 to take the titles
which includes 95 miles of trail and 14,000ft of ascent
was won by Rowan Boswood in 15:14:42 and Siobhan Killingbeck in 17:41:09 to place sixth overall
Preston AC’s Matt Wigelsworth was the impressive winner of the feature event at the Belfast Irish Milers Club Meeting
The overdue arrival of summer meant perfect running conditions as records tumbled at the Mary Peters Track throughout an action-packed afternoon
it was a worthwhile trip across the Irish Sea from his Preston base as he picked up the £200 bonus for breaking three minutes and 43 seconds in the men’s 1500m
The ice-cool 22-year-old was well back off the pace in third place with 300m to run but stormed to the front on the final straight before stopping the clock at a personal best 3:42.67
Omagh’s Eilish Flanagan in a class of her own in the women’s 1500m
who had only returned from Arizona where she is on an athletics scholarship on the Wednesday before the race
opened up an unassailable lead on the penultimate circuit before coming home on her own in 4:21.06
Both 800m races were thrilling affairs with contrasting outcomes
Kieran Kelly took up the running in the men’s race with 300m to go and looked all over the winner as he entered the home straight
his Raheny Shamrock club colleague Cillian Kirwan had other ideas as he overhauled Kelly right on the line to win in 1:50.45
Nadia Power lived up to the favourite’s tag in the women’s two-lapper striking the front on the final back straight to build up a 20 metre lead
Although fading slightly over the final 100m
the Dubliner still had enough in hand to win easily in 2:04.05
Surprise here was Irish record holder for the event Rose-Anne Galligan ending up back in ninth with a modest 2:07.70 timing
Other highlights included comprehensive victories in the respective 5000m races by Tullamore Harrier Liam Brady (14:32.80) and Strabane resident Ann-Marie McGlynn (16:09.35); Finn Valley’s Shane Irwin (47.72) and North Down’s Rachel McCann (56.94) were the winners of the respective 400m races while another Finn Valley athlete Janine Boyle arguably turned in the top sprint performance of the day with a 25.79 clocking in the women’s 200m

It was a day with mixed feelings for Nafi Thiam at the women's heptathlon in Talence (Bordeaux)
The Belgian athlete won the event at her comeback and qualified for the Olympic Games
there was one dark cloud: the javelin throw
Thiam collected 6,819 points in her 7 events
well above the Olympic minimum of 6,420 points
she set a world record in the high jump (2.02 metres)
who set a new Belgian record in the long jump
breaking the 1996 record of Sandrine Hennart
things went wrong in the last-but-one event
Thiam felt a strong pain in her elbow when she threw
and lost all chances of breaking the European record of Karolina Kluft (7,032 points in 2007)
It's hard to be joyful about the long jump considering what happened later on
Nafi Thiam sets all-time high jump record in heptathlon
Thiam was emotionally down after the javelin event and there were fears she could not take part in the final event
and better than when she became the European champion last year (6,816 points)
Thiam was fighting her tears when she told the VRT that "it's hard to be joyful about the long jump record considering what happened afterwards
because I had a difficult winter and I worked hard to be back here."
"I can't move my elbow right now
But there are three months left until the World Championships in Doha
and we will nurse the injury as well as possible."
