Keolis has launched a second 100% electric Bus Rapid Transit line on the Basque Coast
The e-BRT was inaugurated on 26th April 2021 and it’s part of the Chronoplus transport network
on behalf of the Basque Country Public Transport Authority SMPBA (Syndicat des Mobilités […]
Worldwide, the French group operates over 4,000 vehicles running on alternative energy, which represents about 20% of its total bus fleet. Recently Keolis won a 100% electric bus contract in Gothenburg (Sweden)
Asked about the future scenarios for e-BRT concepts in Europe during the first event of the Sustainable Bus Tour 2021 (that see Keolis as a Mobility Partner)
the group’s Director Center of Excellence Energy Transition-Bus Bruno Lapeyrie said: «We consider e-BRT a real wind of change in this industry
The BRT concept is potentially very interesting for e-buses
Compared on a CAPEX basis with tramways (20 – 30 million euros/km)
the investment for an e-BRT can be much lower
with a capacity that is very close to the one of a tram
Add to this the very futuristic shape of an e-BRT bus…»
The new line is 10 km long and features 24 stations
Seven 100% electric vehicles (model Irizar ie tram) will carry approximately 90,000 passengers per month
This new line will increase the transport offer by 25% (more frequency) and with the objective of increasing ridership by 50%
over 40% of the journeys on the Chronoplus network will be made on electric vehicles
An innovative and structuring transport mode for the Chronoplus network Keolis has operated the Chronoplus network since 2017
providing mobility services to 165,000 inhabitants in the Basque Country conurbation
which includes eleven municipalities1 in the south- west of France
In addition to the two 100% electric BRT lines
a transport for people with reduced mobility (TPRM) service
a river link and two park-and-ride facilities
the second e-BRT line follows the same itinerary as former bus line 2
connecting the centre of Bayonne to the centre of Tarnos in 20 minutes
We consider e-BRT a real wind of change in this industry
Add to this the very futuristic shape of an e-BRT bus…
five of which are connected to the first e-BRT line
It serves the main activity hubs in the conurbation
shopping and leisure centres featuring cinemas and sports parks
the Bayonne SNCF train station and the new Tarnos park-and-ride
The seven vehicles of the fleet will run on an extended timetable (from 6am to midnight on weekends (11pm in the short term due to Covid-19 restrictions) and every day in summer
these 100% electric vehicles are 18 metres long with a 150 passenger capacity
including 38 seats equipped with USB sockets
Keolis strengthens that the vehicles benefit from a dual charging system
fast if carried out at the terminus (5 minutes on average) or slower if carried out at the depot at night (3 to 4 hours)
The launch of the line has been organised to coincide with the overhaul of the 24 stations to facilitate access to the vehicles for people with reduced mobility
deploy passenger information terminals (displaying arrival times in real time) and install automatic ticket machines
A park-and-ride facility has also been created at the Tarnos/Garròs station to encourage the use of public transport
The P+R is free for Chronoplus network users and has 400 spaces

Keolis has launched a second all-electric Bus Rapid Transit line on the French Basque Coast
The e-BRT is part of the Chronoplus transport network
The SMPBA (Syndicat des Mobilités Pays Basque Adour) operates the route
has 24 stations and is served by seven electric Irizar articulated buses
it is the second such venture since opening a zero-emission service between Bayonne and Biarritz in 2019
Now over 40% of the journeys on the Chronoplus network will be made on electric vehicles
The transit company uses articulated e-buses by Irizar on both lines
The ie tram model sits 38 people and has a 150 passenger capacity
Kéolis estimates the eBRT from Tarnos will carry 90,000 passengers per month
Director Center of Excellence Energy Transition-Bus
told Sustainable Bus that compared to traditional tramways (20 – 30 million euros/km)
the investment for an e-BRT could be much lower
Kéolis stresses that the vehicles can charge both fast at stops for about five minutes and slower overnight
The second e-BRT line follows the same route as former bus line 2
It also connects to the first eBRT at five stops
The Group claims it operates a total of about 4,000 alternative energy vehicles worldwide, about 20% of its bus fleet. Note that Keolis also counts biogas as alternative energy
so not all of the 4,000 vehicles will be electric

Safran Helicopter Engines has made the first ground run of its Tech TP
a turboprop technological demonstrator based on an Ardiden 3 turboshaft and developed as part of the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation program
The test took place at Safran Helicopter Engines’ facility in Tarnos
More than 20 European partners are contributing to this technological demonstrator
The Tech TP aims are to validate the technologies required to develop a new-generation turboprop
lightweight architecture and offering 15 percent lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions than current engines
Tech TP would then form the basis for developing a turboprop derivative of the Ardiden 3
ready for integrating into future aircraft designs through leveraging the skills of European partners
The Tech TP test campaign will validate the behavior of a complete propulsive system
It will also evaluate the case for more “electric” technologies
notably in the accessory gearbox and propeller controller components
Safran Helicopter Engines EVP of engineering
“Supported by the European Commission
the Tech TP technological demonstrator relies on the skills and know-how of more than 20 European partners
This first run is a very important milestone toward the validation of a new European turboprop engine
due to enter the market in the coming years and offering increased performance
competitive operating costs and low environmental footprint.”
“Congratulations to Safran and its many partners across Europe on this achievement to promote European cleaner aviation by substantially reducing CO2 emissions
We look forward to the promising next steps,” said Axel Krein
executive director of Clean Sky 2 Joint Undertaking
The Ardiden 3 is a new-generation turboshaft in the 1,700- to 2,000-shaft-horsepower range
confirming high levels of design maturity and competitive operating and maintenance costs
more than 250 Ardiden 1 engines are already in service
The Ardiden 3 features a remarkably compact modular architecture
a best-in-class power-to-weight ratio and low cost-of-ownership
Public transport operator Keolis has commissioned an electric bus line in the southwest of France where ten Irizar electric articulated buses will be put into operation
The twelve-kilometre line with 30 stations connects Bayonne with Biarritz
A second electric bus line connecting Bayonne with Tarnos will be inaugurated next year with eight more electric buses. Keolis already has experience with the articulated buses from the Spanish bus manufacturer: In May of this year, the public transport operator already integrated 43 electric Irizar buses into its fleet in Amiens
the journey from Bayonne to Biarritz will take about 30 minutes
Buses will depart every 12 minutes during the day
from Thursday to Saturday even until 2:30 a.m
Passengers at the 30 stations are informed in real-time by a display system
eight of which will also operate on the second line to Tarnos
some of which are tailored for passengers with reduced mobility
The buses can be quickly charged within five minutes via a current collector
The Keolis depot in Bayonne is currently being prepared for the charging and maintenance of the buses
110 employees have already been trained to operate the new e-buses
