“I didn’t plan on getting into the fragrance business initially
It all started somewhat unexpectedly when I began making candles as Christmas gifts for friends and family
I wanted to create something personal and meaningful
so I crafted unique scents for the people close to me
As word spread and people started asking if they could buy my fragrances
I realised I had stumbled upon something special
That’s when I decided to take it more seriously; what started as a simple
heartfelt gift turned into a full-fledged fragrance business
I had a variety of experiences growing up that really shaped who I am today
My childhood was filled with moments of learning and exploration
which allowed me to develop a strong sense of independence early on
I was raised in an environment that encouraged curiosity and problem-solving
which gave me the foundation to navigate both personal and professional challenges as I got older
I think those early experiences taught me resilience and adaptability
two qualities that have been incredibly valuable as a founder
Managing and running Maison Louis Marie nonstop requires staying focused
and I attribute my work ethic to the values I learned when I was younger
My childhood definitely shaped my ability to tackle multiple roles—whether it’s being a mother
One of the most challenging periods in my life has been this one I am in right now
when I am trying to find the balance between running Maison Louis Marie and being fully present for my young son
The challenge has been in figuring out how to be there for my son in a meaningful way
while also handling the relentless pace of my business
and some days I feel like I’m stretched thin
but I know being there for him is the most important part of my life
These moments have tested my ability to juggle multiple roles
but they’ve also taught me a lot about resilience and the importance of being emotionally present
I am dealing with these challenges by learning to prioritise and delegate
A key step was realising that I didn’t have to do everything myself
trusting them to take on more responsibilities so that I could carve out the time and mental space to be more focused
A flow on effect of this was I was able to offer more support to my team than I had before
I also made a conscious effort to create boundaries between work and family time
By setting aside dedicated time for my family
I was able to be more emotionally available
which made a huge difference in how we connected
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is the importance of actually being present
It’s not just about how much time I spend with my son
but the quality of that time and my emotional engagement
I’ve also learned that it’s okay to ask for help
and that delegating doesn’t mean losing control—it means making room for what really matters
I want people to see me as someone who is deeply committed to both my work and my loved ones
and as someone who never stops learning or growing
The best parts of my work are the creativity it allows
as well as the connection it fosters with people
I love crafting special scents that evoke emotions and memories and seeing how customers respond to them is incredibly rewarding
It’s fulfilling to know that something I created brings joy to others
whether it’s through a personal fragrance they wear every day or a special gift they give to someone else
Being able to transform a passion into a business has been a huge blessing
There’s always something that needs attention
especially when trying to find space for my personal life
the pressure to keep up with demand and ensure everything runs smoothly can be stressful
There’s little room for error in a competitive market
and that constant pressure to perform can be exhausting
Seeing my business thrive and knowing that people love what I create makes it all worthwhile
I keep my skincare routine minimal but focused on products that deliver results
Products become essentials for me not only because they make my skin look great but also because they help it feel nourished and protected
One of my favourite beauty products is the Natura Bissé C+C Vitamin Cream
I love using it as part of my daily skincare routine because it leaves my skin feeling hydrated
It’s packed with antioxidants and helps brighten my complexion while fighting signs of aging
which is important to me as I focus on aging gracefully
I usually apply it in the morning after cleansing my face
as it provides a nice glow and helps protect my skin throughout the day
I also use the Natura Bissé C+C Vitamin Splash [Ed
which is a refreshing spray that I love to apply during the day or after exercising
It feels revitalising and gives my skin a quick hydration boost
It’s perfect for those busy days when I need to refresh my skin without doing a full routine
After my facial skincare routine I love using our No.04 Bois De Balincourt Body Oil and the deodorant
and also are the perfect base for any fragrance from my collection that I choose to wear on top of it
At night, I switch to the Sisley Phyto-Blanc range
It’s great for evening out my skin tone and keeping it bright and clear
This range has really helped me maintain a balanced complexion
and I like how lightweight yet effective it feels on my skin after a long day
My hair has gotten thinner over the years and I use Sisley Revitalizing Volumizing Shampoo with Camellia Oil to help manage it
This shampoo is specifically formulated to add volume and vitality to thinning hair while also nourishing it
The camellia oil in it helps strengthen and protect the hair
while giving it more body and a fuller appearance
I love how it gently cleanses without stripping my hair of moisture
and it makes a noticeable difference to my hair’s volume
It’s become a staple in my hair care routine
I take care of my body by staying committed to regular exercise and maintaining a balanced
staying hydrated is a big part of my routine
as I believe it’s essential for overall health and skin vitality
I’ve learned that taking care of my body isn’t just about the physical activity I do
but also about giving it the rest and nourishment it needs to function at its best
My day starts with getting my son ready for school
Exercise helps me get centred and focused for the day ahead
and ensuring I’m in the right mindset to tackle both personal and work responsibilities
I like to make sure I am building muscle and overall working on body conditioning
using free weights and resistance bands to keep things dynamic and engaging
which helps clear my mind and gives me a great boost of energy
I also really enjoy the Peloton when I want a high-intensity workout – and it’s so convenient
which is fantastic for both endurance and keeping my muscles toned without too much impact on my joints
I have always been interested in how clothes are built – the craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes into a well-made garment
and can be styled up or down depending on the occasion
flowing dress for the day or something more structured for an event
Dresses allow me to look polished while still feeling comfortable and true to my personal style
They give me the ability to move through my day
I’m a big fan of designers like Dries Van Noten
I love their attention to detail and how they play with structure
Dries Van Noten’s prints and tailoring always feel fresh yet timeless
while Phoebe Philo’s designs resonate deeply with me because they reflect a true understanding of how women want to feel in their clothes: confident
Simone Rocha finds such a beautiful balance between femininity and edge
My attitude toward ageing is one of embracing it with grace and acceptance
I am so grateful that I feel stronger than ever
I’ve gained a deeper understanding of myself
and maintaining a balanced lifestyle have given me a sense of empowerment as I age
growing older is an opportunity to continue evolving
and I feel more resilient now than I ever did in my younger years
which has helped me feel confident and capable at every stage of life.”

Olympic Torch Relay | Stage 23 - Deux-Sèvres | Olympic Games Paris 2024Watch the highlights of the 23rd stage of the Olympic Torch Relay for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 that took place in Deux-Sèvres.
Since the start of its journey, the Olympic Torch has travelled along many coasts and seashores, from the Mediterranean to coast of La Manche, and is poised to visit the shores of the Atlantic next week. In the meantime, on Sunday, it made a detour to Thouars, near the Thouet River. In Coulon, it descended the Sèvre Niortaise by boat, in the heart of the 'Green Venice' in the famed Marais Poitevin.
The day was also an opportunity to admire the local heritage and illuminate two castles: Thouars - the 17th-century Château des Ducs de La Trémoille, partially converted into a college - and the Château de Bressuire, the remains of which have stood the test of time since the 10th century. The Torch passed through the Porte Saint-Jacques, the symbol of Parthenay, and stopped off at the prestigious École Nationale des Sous-Officiers d'Active in Saint-Maixent-l'École, founded in 1963.
It also visited the impressively long (83 metres) and luminous l’Abbaye Royale de Celles-sur-Belles. The festivities ended in Niort, an opportunity to wind through the streets of the department's capital city. The Torch passed through the Clou Bouchet district before making its way to Port Boinot and the Musée du Donjon, which traces the city's history from the 12th century to the present day. The convoy's route concluded at Place Chanzy, where the celebration was held.
Sport is a mainstay in the Deux-Sèvres department, with many of its facilities awarded the 'Terre de Jeux 2024' label. Numerous events occur throughout the year, including the Coupe de rugby des collèges 79, the Highland Games world championship of traditional Scottish strength, and the Celles-sur-Belle handball clubs and Niort rugby club.
On Sunday, another sport took centre stage: taekwondo. A group relay dedicated to this martial art took place in Bressuire with Niort native Myriam Baverel, who was the silver medallist at the 2004 Athens Games as captain. Alongside her were 23 enthusiasts, including the oldest participant of the day, Moon-Ho Lee, former coach of the French national team, Emmanuelle Rantière, French veteran champion, and the promising and youngest participant on the day, 13-year-old Nahim Goktas Mazanto.
Like them, 90 Olympic Torch Bearers took their turn throughout the Deux-Sèvres region. All of them have had inspiring lives and destinies. Such is the case of Perrine Marcheteau, the final torchbearer of the day, who will light the cauldron. Perrine is a Red Cross volunteer who never strays too far from the basketball court. Her ambition today is to pass on her passion to younger players.
Tomorrow, the Olympic Torch and all the Relay teams will enjoy a well-deserved rest day. On Tuesday, the torch will head to the Vendée, a land for nature lovers and lovers of sport. In particular, it will head for the Passage du Gois, which links the island of Noirmoutier to the coast, the Puy-du-Fou, and then Les Sables d'Olonne for another large-scale public celebration.

Pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] is a heat and drought resilient legume crop grown mostly in Asia and Africa
Pigeonpea is affected by various biotic (diseases and insect pests) and abiotic stresses (salinity and water logging) which limit the yield potential of this crop
resistance to all these constraints is not readily available in the cultivated genotypes and some of the wild relatives have been found to withstand these resistances
the utilization of crop wild relatives (CWR) in pigeonpea breeding has been effective in conferring resistance
quality and breeding efficiency traits to this crop
Bud and leaf tissue of Cajanus scarabaeoides
a wild relative of pigeon pea were used for transcriptome profiling
Approximately 30 million clean reads filtered from raw reads by removal of adaptors
ambiguous reads and low-quality reads (3.02 gigabase pairs) were generated by Illumina paired-end RNA-seq technology
All of these clean reads were pooled and assembled de novo into 1,17,007 transcripts using the Trinity
a total of 98,664 unigenes were derived with mean length of 396 bp and N50 values of 1393
The assembly produced significant mapping results (73.68%) in BLASTN searches of the Glycine max CDS sequence database (Ensembl)
uniprot database of Viridiplantae was used for unigene annotation; 81,799 of 98,664 (82.90%) unigenes were finally annotated with gene descriptions or conserved protein domains
a total of 23,475 SSRs were identified in 27,321 unigenes
This data will provide useful information for mining of functionally important genes and SSR markers for pigeonpea improvement
However their utilization is hampered by limited availability of genomic resources
very narrow genomic information is available for C
Keeping in mind the decisive importance of this species
we performed Illumina paired-end sequencing to generate the bud and leaf transcriptome of C
This is the primary report of transcriptome sequencing and de novo assembly of C
The transcriptome database will provide a valuable resource for gene discovery and marker development linked with superior traits
scarabaeoides (Accession N0- ICPW87) were obtained from the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT)
The seeds were sown in pots containing 1 kg of soil with 34°C temperature at day and 25°C at night with relative humidity approximately 68% and a photoperiod of 16/8 h
The plants were maintained in the experimental green house at NRCPB
Buds and leaves of were used as plant material in the present study
Fresh leaves and buds were harvested and immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored in −80°C until further use
Total RNA from the buds and leaves was extracted using Spectrum Plant Total RNA Kit (Sigma) following the manufacturer's protocol
RNA was quality was checked by Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer RNA Nanochip (Agilent Technologies) and quantity was checked by Nanodrop spectrophotometer (Thermo scientific)
Total RNA at concentration of ≥500 ng/ul
RNA Integrity Number (RIN) ≥ 7 were used for RNA library preparation
A Truseq RNA Sample Prep Kit (Illumina) was employed in poly-A based mRNA purification and cDNA library construction was carried out according to the manufacturer's instructions
1 ug of total RNA sample of bud and leaf tissue were used for poly-A mRNA selection using streptavidin-coated magnetic beads
Two rounds of enrichment for poly-A mRNA was carried followed by mRNA fragmentation
cDNA was synthesized from enriched and fragmented RNA using reverse transcriptase (Super Script II)
Double stranded Illumina libraries were obtained by 15 cycles of PCR amplification using Illumina PCR primers
The size and purity of the libraries were checked by Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer
The cDNA libraries of average fragment length 360 bp
both the libraries were sequenced using paired end protocol on the Illumina MiSeq system
The raw sequence data generated in present study have been deposited at NCBI in the Short Read Archive (SRA) database under the accession number SRA548291 (experiment accession numbers SRX2661106 and SRX2661107 for bud and leaf tissue
The base quality of the raw paired end reads from bud (17,388,560) and leaf (13,146,615) respectively of 100 bp were assessed by FastQC v0.11.2 (Andrews, 2010). Raw sequenced reads were processed using Trimmomatic software version 0.36 (Bolger et al., 2014) for trimming and quality filtering
reads with poly-N (≥10%) and low quality (sQ ≤ 5) were removed to obtain high quality de novo transcriptome sequence data
GC-content and sequence duplication level of the reads were calculated and the downstream analyses was performed on the filtered clean data
repeats of one to six nucleotides in the core motif were considered
dinucleotides ≥ 10 bases (five repeats) and trinucleotides and tetranucleotides ≥ 12 bases (four and three repeats respectively)
pentanucleotide ≥ 15 bases (3 repeats) and hexanucleotides ≥ 18 bases (3 repeats)
The GC content was 45.10% and the Q20 and Q30 were 94.243 and 90.12% respectively
number of assembled transcripts got reduced from a total of 1,17,007 to 98,664 transcripts
and defined as unigenes with a mean length of 396 bp and N50 of 1,393
the shortest and longest unigenes are 201 and 13,448 bp
26,876 unigenes were within the 200–400 bp
and 9,444 unigenes were within the 400–1,000 bp
we observed that part of unigenes (62,344) were over 1000 bp
which were very helpful to further annotation and functional analysis of unigenes
Assessment of transcriptome assembly was performed with the transcripts (obtained from Trinity assembler)
Bowtie2 was used to align the reads to the constructed transcriptome from Trinity and then we counted the number of proper pairs
improper or orphan read alignments to capture the read alignment statistics
93.75% of the mapped fragments were found mapped as proper pairs (yielding concordant alignments 1 or more times to the reconstructed transcriptome) suggesting our proper assembly
The remaining unassembled reads likely correspond to lowly expressed transcripts with unsatisfactory coverage
A better de novo assembly was obtained in current sequencing data and the results are shown in Supplementary Material
Unigenes mapping results with Glycine max coding sequence (Ensembl)
a total of 23,475 SSR loci were identified in 27,321 unigene sequences of which 6128 sequences contained more than one SSR (Supplementary Material
For identification of different types of SSRs
mononucleotide was the most abundant repeat unit i.e
1,356 hexanucleotide and 938 pentanucleotide
This is the first report of a transcriptome database Cajanus scarabaeoides which is a closest wild relative to C
and one of the easiest wild species that can crossed with pigeonpea cultivars
Next-generation RNA sequencing was performed on mRNAs obtained from bud and leaf tissue
Unigenes and SSR makers identified in present study can be used be used for improvement of cultivated pigeon pea with specific traits
however extended deep researches are required to confirm these findings
Incorporation of different facts at transcriptome
metabolome and proteome approaches would lead to comprehensive research programs focus on engineering C
SS and GR participated in sample collection

will whisk you off to the blue seas of Capri
When clean fragrance brand, Maison Louis Marie
revealed how it was her own family history
rooted in botanical history and exploration
Her ancestor Louis Marie Aubert du Petit Thouars was a pioneer in French botanical history and
he discovered a vast array of plant specimens
collecting over 2,000 to bring back to France ten years later
he was elected as a member of the prestigious Académie des Sciences
and inspired to build upon the botanical roots of her family
Marie Du Petit Thouars founded fragrance and lifestyle brand Maison Louis Marie with six initial scents
founder & creative director of Maison Louis Marie
Marie reveals how travel remains the backbone of the brand
“Louis Marie Aubert du Petit Thouars’s legacy resonates deeply with me on a personal level,” she reveals
I often heard stories about his adventures and discoveries
His passion for exploring the unknown and his meticulous attention to detail in documenting the wonders of the natural world have always fascinated me.”
“What inspires me most about him is his relentless curiosity and his ability to see beauty in the intricate details of nature
This personal connection to his work instilled in me a profound appreciation for the natural world and a desire to continue his legacy of exploration and discovery
I aimed to embody his spirit of curiosity and respect for nature
I wanted to create something that not only pays homage to his contributions but also inspires others to see the beauty and importance of the natural world
It’s a way to keep his memory alive and to share the values he stood for with a wider audience.”
making candles and experimenting with scents in her grandfather’s green house
Marie launched Maison Louis Marie offering luxury candles and perfumes that focus on natural scents
“Nature and plants have always been a significant part of my family’s life,” she reveals
surrounded by the beauty of the natural world
where I spent countless hours learning about different plants and how to care for them
following in the footsteps of our ancestor Louis Marie Aubert du Petit Thouars
sharing stories of their unique characteristics These experiences ingrained in me a deep appreciation for flora and the natural world
which has greatly influenced my brand and its core values.”
Historic papers detail the findings of Marie's ancestor
Inspired by her family’s archive of historical botanical drawings
Marie has used an original drawing of an orchid as part of the brand’s logo
creating candles and scents became a way for me to bottle the essence of the greenhouse
The process was both scientific and artistic
a perfect blend of the meticulous care and the creative inspiration I found in the greenhouse
It was also a beautiful way to make homemade Christmas gifts and these early experiments laid the foundation for my passion for scents and candle-making and into creating Maison Louis Marie.”
Louis Marie Aubert du Petit Thouars: a pioneer in French botanical history
Marie began her company journey with 200 candles of each scent
and within just four months she had sold out her entire inventory
Four years after such a successful business launch
her husband and company CEO Matthew Berkson joined Marie in 2016
and the two have since worked together to the scale the business further
inspired by the botanical illustrations from my ancestor’s era
we also name many of our scents after the exotic places he explored and the unique plant species he documented
but also evokes a sense of adventure and discovery in our customers
our packaging often feature excerpts from his writings and drawings
connecting our products to the rich history of botanical exploration
we aim to share the story of his life’s work and passion
allowing our customers to feel a part of this legacy
our brand strives to embody the spirit of curiosity
and dedication to beauty that Louis Marie Aubert du Petit Thouars exemplified.”
Candles are inspired by historic botanical discoveries and places of importance to the founder
Founded with a mission to create accessible and clean luxury fragrances
Maison Louis Marie produces environmentally mindful products: from perfume and home fragrance to hand and body care
These products are free of toxic ingredients—formulations are clean
and packaging is always recyclable where possible
“The overall ethos of our brand centres around a deep respect for nature
a commitment to quality and a sense of timeless elegance,” says Marie
“Inspired by the botanical heritage of Louis Marie Aubert du Petit Thouars
we strive to create products that celebrate the beauty and diversity of the natural world.”
Historic botanical illustrations are behind the inspiration of the brand
From No.02 Le Long Fond—inspired by a botanical nursery in Belgium of the same name (with notes of Hinoki wood and cedarwood) to No.09 Vallee de Farney—inspired by a nature reserve in Mauritius (with notes of grapefruit
each fragrance in the brand’s collection has a travel story behind it
is based on a forest that is home to over 100 plant varieties and numerous animals and is where Louis Marie himself discovered many new plant specimens
a small village set on the banks of the Bosphorus in Istanbul
where Marie’s mother experienced her first scent of a Tuberose flower at the age of 16
“Each scent is inspired by childhood memories and old family discoveries,” Marie says
“My family and connection to botany has stuck with me
I had the idea to create something luxurious out of nature while maintaining its preservation.”
France (OSV News) — Highly skilled carpenters from four different companies are working together to rebuild the iconic Notre Dame spire before the grand reopening of the most famous European cathedral on Dec
Among the craftsmen assigned to the prestigious task are two Americans: Jackson Dubois from New York and Michael Burrey from Boston
Dubois and Burrey are members of a team of 18 craftsmen called “companions of duty” at Asselin
a family-owned company that specializes in restoring historical monuments
and one of the four companies working on the spire
The two Americans are working with their colleagues in Thouars
where they have three months to assemble and carve the wooden steps at the base of the spire on which the 16 statues of the apostles and the evangelists will soon stand once again
Those statues had been removed for restoration four days before the devastating April 15
which badly damaged the 850-year-old Paris cathedral
which were exhibited earlier this year to the public at the Cité de l’architecture
are waiting to be placed at the four cardinal corners of the spire’s base on beautifully carved wooden tiers in the fall
who introduces himself as “a journeyman timber framer with the timber framers’ guild of America,” has French ancestry
His last name — Dubois — means “of wood,” and his family were French Protestants who settled in New York state in the late 17th century
Dubois told OSV News that despite his heritage
his French is “quite poor.” Still
we all wear heavy hearing protection anyway so we communicate through a universal carpentry language
(translation software) is quite useful for smaller details,” Dubois said
He also makes a point to learn “one new French word useful in the shop” each day
joining up chamfers (angled edges)” — in other words “holding everything together.” Wood carving and art history is a passion for these carpenters
frequently goes on walks around Thouars and its outskirts
“This is a medieval town; there is so much to see
He added that he hopes he can see the spire being raised in Paris this fall and return for the opening of the cathedral to the public Dec
as you need perfect language skills to work at such heights
but I hope to be among the crowd,” Burrey
He recalled his parents speaking to him about their honeymoon in the French capital and their visit to the cathedral in 1958
“My grandmother was also a nurse on the French front in World War I and received a decoration from the French government for it,” he recalled
Dubois and Burrey were both part of the Handshouse Truss project in the summer of 2021
a total of 40 American carpenters followed original drawings and hand-built an identical replica of “truss No
the craftsmen raised it by hand in front of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception adjacent to the The Catholic University of America campus
Gregory joined the pulling lines that raised the truss upright
He then blessed it in a ceremony for the university community
The truss was then reconstructed on the National Mall in Washington Aug
saw their work and was so impressed that he invited volunteers to come to France and work on the reconstruction of the cathedral
“the Handshouse project was about raising awareness
showing solidarity with France and showing that the skills still existed to rebuild the cathedral identically.”
he realizes that his time as a young carpenter touring Europe and volunteering to help restore historical monuments in Poland
helped him acquire the necessary skills and made a difference in his application to work on the “construction site of the century,” as the French media have called Notre Dame’s reconstruction
Jean-Louis Georgelin — the five-star general overseeing the rebuilding of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris — paid tribute particularly to the two American carpenters who had joined forces with their French colleagues May 2
Burrey managed to do online classes with his students from the Asselin workshop
“I wired myself and showed them via Zoom all the different stages of our work here,” he told OSV News
The tools they use to carve the wood are the same as those used by medieval builders
But they do also incorporate modern techniques
In order to “quicken the pace of work” given the tight schedule
Burrey had to learn to use power tools for the first time to cut wood
Working on Notre Dame’s spire has given the two Americans a great appreciation for the “creative genius” of its creator
a 19th-century French architect who is famous for his restoration of the most prominent medieval landmarks in his country
the proportions and the geometry of it all.” And Dubois’ admiration extends beyond the architecture to the cathedral as a whole
“It is the celebration of humanity that it represents
which is constantly surprising and gratifying,” he said

This micro-bar in the heart of the Temple area stands in stark contrast with the trendy dives that crowd the Marais
You can still drink beers at union prices (€2.50) and some excellent wines by the glass (€2.50 to €3.50)
Food is homemade dishes like marinated chicken skewers
it only costs around €10 for lunch or dinner (an extraordinary feat)
and comes with thick-cut chips and homemade sauces
The Berber family who run the place also put on couscous dishes for lunch

“Spraying behind your knees creates a more subtle pulse point experience than if you sprayed your neck – you’ll get a whiff now and then rather than continuous exposure,” says Frank Voelkl, a senior perfumer at Firmenich
Give your fragrance bottle a pump in the air if you haven’t reached for it in a while as the first spray (which will include residue in the nozzle) can contain perfume that may be partly oxidized
Because natural fragrances use essential oils taken from plant material
they may break down and degrade faster than their synthetic counterparts
synthetic fragrances will last longer since they are chemically more stable compared to a natural essential oil,” says du Petit Thouars
but consider a bouquet of fresh flowers and ones made of plastic - which one will last longer?”
“Hair fragrances typically use a lot less alcohol—sometimes no alcohol at all—making them a good option for those with skin sensitivities or dry hair,” says du Petit Thouars
the natural oils on your skin can alter your scent
And if you have sensitive or eczema-prone skin
certain fragrances could worsen your condition
fragrance should not be applied to fabrics like nylon or polyester

The big names of the PA stallion world congregate at the Haras de Thouars
Rarely in history (and perhaps never) has a private stud assembled such an elevated number of high quality stallions
as underscored by the 2024 example of Haras de Thouars
In addition to assembling a high class PA stallion roster
the Lot-et-Garonne stud has taken particular care to cultivate a certain genetic diversity
The number of stallions whose semen samples are extracted for insemination purposes at the Haras de Thouars is virtually unlimited
The stud is currently home to 13 PA stallions
Commanding a stud fee of €5,500 (fresh semen sample) and €6,500 (frozen semen sample)
Azadi (Darike) is quite simply one of the most competitively priced stallions on the market
It should be stressed that he has produced a dozen Gr1 PA winners
and he represents a golden ‘outcross’ opportunity for mares from the bloodlines of Tiwaiq and Amer
These are essential qualities for any racehorse… even if you’re only aiming at races for older horses
The 2023 covering season was the busiest ever for Azadi and 2024 will without any doubt be a record one
Dahess (Amer) can draw on the successful stud careers of his sons Al Mourtajez and Dahor de Brugere
This « chef de race » blended speed and stamina on the track
having won over trips ranging from 1,200m to 2,000m
He has imparted these two qualities to the bumper crops of horses boasting his paternity
Dahess has produced a long list of Gr1 PA winners
with First Classs (Dahess) and Moshrif (Dahess)
both proving in recent times that their sire has retained his place among the elite PA racing sires
His 2024 fee has been set at €5,500 (frozen semen sample) and €5,000 (fresh semen sample)
and he’s exceptionally affordable for a stallion who has had a profound influence on the Stud Book
Al Mourtajez (Dahess) has proved to be the great revelation on the international PA stallion scene
He has sired a dozen black type performers
including the outstanding performer of last season
He’s also the sire of the UAE President Cup (Gr1 PA) victor Al Doha (Al Mourtajez)
The above two horses completed a 1-2 in the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr1 PA)
Al Mourtajez is probably on the cusp of an exceptional stallion career
his stud fee reflects his exceptional standing and
his stud fee is: €16,000 (fresh semen sample) and €16,500 (frozen semen sample)
the initial crops of Mister Ginoux (Amer) have caused quite a stir on the racetrack
the young sire started to cover larger books of mares as of 2021
will undoubtedly benefit from the successes enjoyed by the older generations of the brother of Lady Princess (General)
Already the sire of some 15 black type performers
the sire of the excellent Hoggar de l’Ardus (Mister Ginoux)
and winner of the Qatar Arabian World Cup and the Qatar Derby des Pur-Sang Arabes de 4 ans (Gr1 PA)
Mister Ginoux commands a stud fee of €3,000 (fresh semen sample) and €3,500 (frozen semen sample)
If the Munjiz bloodline is what you’re after…
Two sons of Munjiz (Kesberoy) are in residence at the Haras de Thouars
Al Mamun Monlau (Munjiz) is very much a highly proven stallion whose progeny boast an impressive record at Gr1 PA level
He commands a stud fee of €2,500 (fresh semen sample)
Munjiz is responsible for producing Jugurtha de Monlau (Al Mamun Monlau)
a dual winner of the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 (Gr1 PA)
Al Mamun Monlau is a good outlet for mares by Amer
The splendid Muraaqib (Munjiz) also represents an ‘outcross’ opportunity for a certain number of mares
His stud career only really took off in 2022
and yet his 2023 covering season was remarkable (for the fact that he was bred to 116 mares)
Muraaqib only covered a few mares privately
and this on behalf of his breeder and former owner
is currently in training with Charles Gourdain
Proven sires which are crying out to be rediscovered
Sir Bani Yas (Amer) has covered very few mares since embarking on his stud career
with only seven runners in France to his name
he has still managed to sire three winners
including the Al Rayyan Cup – Prix Kesberoy (Gr1 PA) second Hakeem (Sir Bani Yas)
Given his stud fee of €2,000 (fresh semen sample) and €2,200 (frozen semen sample)
he’s a stallion worthy of another chance as his strike rate « speaks for itself
Commanding a remarkably affordable stud fee (€500 fresh semen sample and €800 frozen sample)
Murhib (Amer) is from an off-the-beaten-track maternal line
having generated several black type performers
enters the bracket of stallions worthy of « rediscovery »
It’s hard to find a more attractive type than Hilal Al Zaman (Mencour): as he’s a real oil painting
he’s already the sire of six black type performers
and his progeny are equally adept on dirt as on turf
His stud fee is €1,000 (fresh semen sample) and €1,600 (frozen semen sample)
Aim South (Burning Sand) boasts a totally “outcross” pedigree
The possibilities of tapping into the bloodline of the US performer Burning Sand (San Lou Romirz) are few and far between
and the ‘Thouars’ resident presents a great opportunity at a time when the successful fusion of Franco-American bloodlines is becoming increasingly apparent on a daily basis
Aim South already has black type performers to his name in the US
and he certainly represents a solution for the owners of mares whose pedigrees are saturated by the most common bloodlines
Azadi stands alongside his son Al Mouwaffak (Azadi) – a young sire who imparts some highly original and valuable bloodlines (notably via the dam’s sire Djourman)
The quality of a horse is expressed in its early years
and the evolution of the French PA horse has been shaped over decades by its racing programme for 3-y-olds
Al Mouwaffak exhibited a great deal of class at that age
and particularly in his success at Saint-Cloud
He was unbeaten in his first three career outings (as a 3-y-old)
The first 3-y-olds of this bred in the purple customer hit the track in 2023
They included the Prix Nevada II (Gr3 PA) winner Marwa (Al Mouwaffak)
Al Mouwaffak is available at €1,500 (frozen semen) and €1,000 (fresh semen)
One of the few sons of Mahabb (Tahar de Candelon) at stud
Manark (Mahabb) has an unconventional pedigree that openly invites ‘fusion’ with a wide range of bloodlines
he boasted a lengthy and successful career at the top level
Manark covered very few mares at the beginning of his career despite combining pedigree and performance
He numbers the smart Vizhir (Manark) who keeps rattling off stylish wins in Saudi Arabia
He’s undoubtedly one to follow in the top events in a country which is on the rise on the international racing stage
Manak’s live covering fee [hand-held] is €1,200
Gazwan (Amer) is quite simply one of the best horses in the history of PA racing
as his first crop will surface for the first time on the racecourse as 3-year-olds
15 of them are already listed in training in France
These young horses are in the hands of some of France’s finest professionals
Gazwan has enjoyed the remarkable support of his entourage
and he has every chance of proving himself at stud
His 2024 stud fee is €3,000 (fresh semen sample) and €3,500 (frozen semen sample)
The Haras de Thouars stud’s website is very accurate
it lists the international stud fees for all the stallions listed in this article
In addition to those of some of the sires mentioned in this article
several profiles have recently been updated (as denoted by the examples of Sivit Al Maury

I was talking with Delanie Pickering last week
she was getting ready to travel to France to play at a blues festival called “Festival Terri’ Thouars Blues” in the town of Thouars
The festival is promoted as a “high-quality international program” including artists from many countries
well-known as lead guitarist for Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish
will be bringing her own style and exceptional talent to this international music festival
And I call her “our own” because even though she’s from New Hampshire
and plays a whole lot of music here in Oak Bluffs
Delanie is one of the most insanely talented and exceptionally kind and humble people I have ever known
She’s made a name for herself beyond the Vineyard — the Bluefish have played around New England at dive bars and swanky clubs
and they have also traveled to Europe to play as a band
Delanie was invited to join some other French musicians at this festival
and I know that she is going to blow their socks off
the Jon Bates Band is playing a concert at the W.T
high-energy band; don’t miss this chance to see them
This “Worm Moon” is also bringing the first lunar eclipse of 2024
this eclipse will make the full moon’s energy feel much more intense
It comes just six days after the spring equinox
making it a symbol of turning points or awakenings in ancient lore
I read that each Zodiac sign will experience this full moon eclipse differently

these toxic waste mountains are not the only polluted substance that need to be dealt with at specialist treatment centres
Rain water percolates through the industrial waste mountains while they are stored and awaiting treatment
that is just as polluted and dangerous as the original waste pile
these liquids are channelled into vast holes dug into the earth to form controlled basins
The 1999 European Directive relating to the dumping of waste sets out strict criteria for the storage and processing of industrial leachates to ensure that the way they are collected
handled and eventually dumped complies with regulatory requirements
leachate basins are lined with membranes to stop the polluted water from penetrating the ground and entering the water table
This solution creates large chemical baths that offer a highly inhospitable environment for the pumpsthat are used to process the liquid
The pumpsselected have to be suspended 30 cm above the membrane so as to avoid suction on the membrane
They must also be robust enough to need little or no maintenance – since regularly accessing pumpsfor repairs in such a hazardous environment is understandably unpopular with treatment centre owners
offered to rent a Tsurumi pumpto the a French wastewater treatment company
“We placed one of our KTZ3.7 kW pumpsin a very difficult site where the owner's experience was that all other pumpshad failed after only one week,” explains du Petit Thouars
“After six months the KTZ33.7 was still running so well that when I asked the owner what he thought of it
The wastewater company was so impressed with the performance of that first Tsurumi pumpand decided to purchase more
It has now been a customer of Tsurumi for over seven years and only uses Tsurumi pumpsfor the whole water treatment facility
“The casing of the KTZrange of pumpsis made from cast iron rather than aluminium and the impellers are chromium cast iron
both of which are far more resistant to corrosion,” said Daniel Weippert
“This makes them an ideal choice for the particular stresses of leachate handling.”
The experience in France suggests that the KTZ pumpsare particularly well suited to alkaline leachate environments and that maintenance on Tsurumi pumpsat French waste product treatment centres is typically very low
This is an important consideration when operating in a toxic environment
