I love a CliffsNotes condensation of a place
All of Rome in ninety minutes gave me a Visigothic sense of accomplishment
untarnished even when my tour bus’s automated audio commentary got out of synch
implying that the Pope lived in the Trevi Fountain
I was once shepherded through Beijing’s Forbidden City by the voice of Roger Moore
coming from a stuttery tape recorder; while visiting the Teotihuacán ruins
I was de-toured to a basilica housing the cloak of the Virgin of Guadalupe
It looked like a dry-cleaned blouse still covered in plastic

account of Egypt arguably invented the form
and it even included the obligatory section on public rest rooms: “[The Egyptians] established for themselves manners and customs in a way opposite to other men in almost all matters

it never occurred to me to be a tourist in the city where I’ve lived for forty years—namely
which received almost sixty-five million visitors in 2024
I learned so many factoids that I am practically a walking almanac of New York City
with a useful appendix listing Some Amusing Things You Can Say at Cocktail Parties
Among the tours I didn’t take were “Smelling Bushwick,” “Death in New York,” and one of Ellis Island Hospital
and traipse through infectious- and contagious-disease wards

a chipper sixty-one-year-old who moved to New York from Winchester

Locke was cagey about his own political leanings (did the red beanie provide a clue?) as he led us briskly along what he called the “resident to President” route
“And Donald Trump does not like low-energy people,” he said
“So I need to turn you into winners.” He then made us do what he called “a quick Donald Trump dance

“This sent Donald Trump ballistic,” Locke said
Locke handed out complimentary Donald-faced key chains to all participants

Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens was packed with fans for the team presentation ahead of the 2022 Tour de France
The first Tour de France Femmes Grand Dèpart from Rotterdam in 2024 acted as another key milestone and historic moment in the sport
Foreign starts to Grand Tours are by no means new but why do major races often begin beyond their borders
The Grand Tours are without doubt pro cycling's most popular and well-known races. Ask someone in the street to tell you something about cycling, and there's a high chance that 'the Tour de France' will be their immediate response
It's a logical response when the French Grand Tour is the largest annual sporting event in the world
Yet more and more often the Tour de France does start in France, the Giro d'Italia kicks-off outside of Italy and the Vuelta a España has started as far away as the Netherlands
while the opening stage of the Corsa Rosa roll out from the coastal city of Durrës
with organisers using them to secure extra funding and wider visibility from a city
region or nation interested in hosting their races
The first foreign start for a Grand Tour came in 1954 when Amsterdam hosted the start of the Tour de France
with the finish on day two being back inside L'Hexagone in Lille
The Grande Boucle has since hosted 26 starts outside of France
while the Giro d'Italia first went elsewhere in 1965 to the enclave of San Marino
Albania will be the 15th start beyond Italy's borders
The Vuelta a España has begun from outside of Spain just five times in its history so far
with the first foray only coming in 1997 in Lisbon
The Spanish Grand Tour is now equally as international as its French and Italian counterparts
It's previous Gran Partidas was also held in Lisbon
and the next two will take place in Italy and Monaco
The Tour de France Femmes returned in its latest reincarnation in 2022
hosting its first foreign start just two years later from Rotterdam in the Netherlands
the route only arrived in France halfway through stage 5 after four days on Dutch and Belgian soil
Yet just because road cycling's major stage races have a tradition of frequently starting outside their country of origin
it doesn't explain how they come about and the driving forces behind them; that's where things get a bit more complex
such as the FIFA World Cup or the Olympics
foreign starts in Grand Tours don't have a standard bidding process per se
or regions will make contact with race organisers ahead of the edition they'd like to host
pitching their idea and why they think it deserves to kickstart one of cycling's major races.
The process can often start as far as a decade out
with the 2027 UK Grand Dèpart from Scotland first pitched in the mid-2000s
Race organisers and potential hosts will then work together to co-create a foreign start over several years so that it meets the needs of that year's race from not just a sporting standpoint
but as a complete event with every aspect taken into consideration
Route visits are then carried out to finalise the parcours
before an official bid is made to race organisers
It is often the case that bids are for one of several editions of a Grand Tour
Copenhagen originally bid for the Tour de France Grand Départ across 2019
eventually being awarded the latter before it was then postponed 12 months.
A myriad of factors determine why and where Grand Tours host foreign starts
to historic and cultural forces at play too.
with insight from individuals who have been part of previous Grand Départs
and one who organised a foreign start that never came to fruition
It's be wrong not to acknowledge that economic forces play a key part in taking a Grand Tour away from their homeland.
Prospective hosts must pay the organisers of the Grand Tours
Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) for the Tour de France
The cost of hosting a Grand Départ can vary massively depending on how attractive a proposition the bid is to the organisers
as well as running cost variables such as the number of stages
Cyclingnews spoke with Lars Vallentin Christensen
senior events specialist at Wonderful Copenhagen
the events company behind the 2022 Tour de France Grand Départ in the Danish capital
who shed light on the approximate costs of hosting the three stages in Denmark
but depending on how much you include - the route
the police - at least €12 million," Vallentin Christensen revealed when asked how much Copenhagen paid for the privilege of kicking off the 2022 edition of Le Tour
with a similar bill believed to have been footed for the 2014 Yorkshire Grand Départ of the Tour de France
despite the sizeable outlay to win the bid and to host the event
hosts are willing to commit the cash with the expectation that the economic return will well outweigh it
Deputy CEO and Director of Sporting Systems and Events at UK Sport
highlights this as a key focus for the upcoming 2027 Tour de France Grand Départ in Great Britain.
UK Sport's role as a strategic agency in the area of sporting events is to help program out what the UK should be hosting
we look quite carefully at the return on investment."
who wasn't yet in a position to comment on the likely cost of the 2027 men's and women's starts
acknowledged that the cost of hosting such an event can weigh heavily not just at the national government level
he and many others believe that the benefits outweigh the costs.
The tourism revenue that Copenhagen gained off the back of the 2022 Grand Départ was roughly 350 million Danish krone
which is in the region of €46 million
Alongside being able to put up the money to host the race
foreign starts have to also be attractive enough propositions to encourage ASO and RCS to take the races outside of their native countries.
Vallentin Christensen was quick to mention the need for "a unique selling point" when pitching to the French Grand Tour's organisers
Planning for Denmark to host the Tour de France began as early as 2011
with the concept taking a few years to iron out between Danish representatives and their contacts at the ASO
Vallentin Christensen's team came up against a sizeable obstacle
"We obviously knew that Denmark is a flat country
so we needed to find our 'mountain' and that turned out to be the Great Belt Bridge."
Denmark thought outside the box in terms of the parcours challenges that their start could offer the Tour
Another point of difference that helped to set Copenhagen apart from other suitors was the city's cycling heritage.
so we came up with a very long tagline of 'the greatest cycling race in the world meets the greatest cycling city in the world.' That was supposed to be the working title
Taking a Grand Tour to one of the cycling capitals of the world is one thing
but hosting a start in one of the world's biggest cities is a whole other ballgame.
That didn't stop former Giro d'Italia organiser Angelo Zomegnan attempting it in the late 2000s.
The Giro wanted to be the first Grand Tour to start outside of Europe
and New York were planned for perhaps the most unique Grande Partenza ever
at that time the Giro needed to internationalise itself
The [proposed] Grande Partenza from Belgium in 2007 was the first step in my mind
America: the first time outside of Europe for a Grand Tour."
The main attraction for the Italian and RCS Sport was the potential rewards that the race visiting the US would bring.
"Starting from the USA would have meant having the big American television networks in tow
which until then had only shown crumbs of the Giro with a minimal share," Zomegnan explained
"Can you imagine the growth in audience in Europe with the Giro proposed [with coverage] at dinner time and the increase in advertising returns and popularity?" he continued.
Zomegnan lays the reason for the plan not coming to fruition at the feet of other RCS managers
their lack of ambition and fear of "making the leap in quality."
flights across the Atlantic and costs can't be ignored
Cycling's environmental footprint has moved more and more into the spotlight over recent years as the sport aims to become more sustainable.
the very nature of a foreign start means the topic of longer transits between stages and their impacts on the climate is hard to ignore.
The Giro's proposed trip to the US for a three-stage Grande Partenza would have required an 8.5-hour flight back to Rome on the rest day
Calculating the environmental impact of such a plan is tricky
especially given the size of the race caravan.
Even if you just assess the impact of a round-trip from Europe to the US and back to Rome for the 184-rider peloton
it equates to 460 tons of CO2 emissions (tCO2)
UCI rules state that a Grand Tour can include an additional rest day
This potentially facilitates a foreign start further afield than neighbouring countries
Transfer times between stages are an issue that Grand Tours face even when the race is at home
almost the same distance as the Tour itself.
Morton highlighted that it's also a big issue they're attempting to overcome in the planning for the UK's 2027 Grand Dèpart
While the full routes for the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes visits have yet to be unveiled
it is known that the men's race will feature a stage in each of Scotland
Plenty of discussions are being had to mitigate the logistical challenges of such a route
as well as the sustainability implications.
because any big sporting event has an environmental impact
We definitely want to minimise that through all the normal ways of reducing carbon emissions
minimising waste and promoting sustainable travel around the event," Morton added
Vallentin Christensen believes that when the UCI Road World Championships return to Denmark in 2029
an event bid won off the back of their Grand Dèpart success
the organisation committee will have even greater focus on encouraging spectators to plan their visits with sustainability in mind
Legacy is a buzzword commonly associated with sporting events
and the foreign starts of Grand Tours are no different.
The ASO and RCS Sport see it as a key part of a foreign start bid
helping to justify their decision to take the race away from France
Both the Yorkshire Grand Dèpart in 2014 and Copenhagen three years ago are examples of when a foreign start's visibility and spectacle have acted as a springboard for future pro cycling events in the regions
Less than 12 months after the British county hosted the Tour
The stage race had five editions before Covid-19 and financial issues made it no longer viable to run
as Vallentin Christensen was quick and proud to point out
Denmark now has plenty of pro cycling events in the pipeline
It welcomes a men's and women's WorldTour one-day race for the first time in 2025 with the Copenhagen Sprint race
The Dane pointed out that on top of the financial boost Copenhagen received from hosting the 2022 Grand Dèpart
they received 75,000 mentions across editorial and social media content worldwide
visibility that acted as a gateway for the future events coming their way.
the lasting impacts stretch much wider than the area's reputation for hosting pro cycling events
the local people's impressions were equally
if not more important than those of visitors from afar.
"We had to make sure that we had the media coverage all over the world and also bring in some visitors
very important for us was to involve the city and all the residents
traders and business operators in the city
to make them get involved with the event and bring them closer together."
The city held several meetings with local people in the build-up to encourage buy-in to what they were aiming to achieve
and it helped to turn Copenhagen yellow for the arrival of the Grande Boucle
In a post-Tour survey of Copenhagen's residents
a considerable 75% responded positively to the race being held in the city
with less than 5% not engaged with the event
Asking Morton about how he's looking to build a legacy akin to that of Yorkshire's off the back of the 2027 Grand Dèpart
he pinpointed fostering community and civic pride as a key aim
He spoke passionately about the reaction that the Tour had in every village and town it passed through in Yorkshire
with the hope that weaving the race through three nations can help to scale this effect up to a national scale
alongside other legacy goals focusing on social impact
"Threading the UK together through the world's biggest cycling race is a really tangible demonstration of what our countries can achieve when they work together
And [there's] no better way of doing that than hosting the opening stages of the Tour de France."
Looking at the trend of foreign starts at Grand Tours and the frequency becoming ever higher
there's no doubt that major races will continue to hunt for host venues that offer them something different and exciting to capture new audiences.
Does this mean that they naturally go further afield
but foreign starts aren't just decided based on air miles
and Grand Tours only seem to be pushing out into new frontiers
Grand Tours have also visited destinations to signify historic or watershed moments
like the West Germany Tour de France start of 1987 or the 2019 start in Brussels honouring Eddy Merckx's first Tour victory
It wouldn't shock anyone for Slovenia to host a Grand Dèpart in the years to come
nor would a visit to the Isle of Man be out of the question either
While equal focus is expected to be on the planning of more foreign starts for the major women's stage races beyond the UK in 2027
after the Tour de France Femmes' inaugural foreign start in the Netherlands last year
Vallentin Christensen predicts Denmark will be in the running to host the Tour de France again in the next decade
but perhaps in a multi-country format to offer something unique yet again
There have been suggestions that the Giro d'Italia could start in the UAE in 2027
with Saudi Arabia perhaps keen to host the Corsa Rosa if the One Cycling project is successful
High summer temperatures would make it almost impossible for the Tour de France to start in the Middle East but North America is far more suitable
Zomegnan still believes the Giro d'Italia should pluck up the courage to become the first Grand Tour to visit the USA. It is perhaps a matter of when rather than if
as the Grand Tour look for more visibility and more funding in a combination of sport

updating the ride experience to incorporate new footage inspired by locations from the prequel trilogy as well as the original saga
Aside from the new paint job–and a matching new piece of box art inspired by The Adventures Continue–the toy remains largely the same as the one that debuted at D23 last year with some minor changes
The ship still features seats to hold up to 25 3.75″-scaled figures (complete with those all-important seatbelts!)
including opening doors that play the classic chime from the ride
and a 4.75″ LCD screen housed at the front of the StarSpeeder’s interior that plays authentic Star Tours ride sequence footage from the Adventures Continue iteration of the attraction
One key difference is that while the StarSpeeder 3000 playset featured a suite of voice phrases from the beloved original Star Tours droid pilot
the 1000 will further reflect Adventures Continue by featuring lines from C-3PO
who took over in the refresh as Star Tours’ latest unwitting pilot
This is also reflected in the included figures
which will feature an R2-D2 and C-3PO from the ‘Droid Factory’ 3.75″ figure line Disney sells in the parks
replacing the Captain Rex included in the D23 StarSpeeder 3000 release
At least this time you won’t have to make the trek to an event like D23 to get your hands on the vehicle this time. The Star Tours: The Adventures Continue StarSpeeder 1000 play set will be available from direct from the Disney Store at this link starting from 11am ET/8am PT this Sunday

Scottie Scheffler taps in to secure wire-to-wire win at THE CJ CUP
Dallas resident Scottie Scheffler dominated his hometown event
Had Scheffler played his last two holes Sunday in even-par, he would have held the PGA TOUR scoring record alone. But he missed the green left at the par-3 17th and flubbed his chip shot en route to a bogey, and he failed to get up-and-down from a greenside bunker at the par-5 18th, missing an 8-foot birdie putt and settling for par.
Before those final two holes, Scheffler’s week at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson was nearly flawless. The world No. 1 carded rounds of 61-63-66-63 at TPC Craig Ranch, becoming the first wire-to-wire winner on TOUR since Lee Hodges at the 2023 3M Open (and just the third wire-to-wire winner at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, an event that dates to 1944).
Scottie Scheffler's excellent tee shot leads to birdie on No. 7 at THE CJ CUP
Scheffler led the field at +12.811 Strokes Gained: Approach the Green, his second-best approach week on TOUR behind the 2024 Memorial Tournament presented by Workday (+12.96). He also ranked third in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and sixth in Strokes Gained: Putting.
Prior to Scheffler’s bogey on No. 17, CBS analyst Colt Knost received a tongue-in-cheek text from Thomas that encouraged Scheffler to be satisfied with a share of the record: “Tell Scottie to just make bogey-par and tie my 72-hole record, please … 31-under is just fine,” Thomas texted Knost. “Take pride in that.”
Scheffler obliged – and he certainly took pride in his first PGA TOUR stroke-play title in Texas, at the same event where he made his first TOUR start in 2014 at age 17.
“It feels like a lifetime of hard work and sacrifice for little moments like these,” said Scheffler, who also won the 2022 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Texas. “And they're pretty special.”

What are some ChatGPT features that I wasn't able to go deep on during the 45-minute session? Two come to mind: temporary chats and memory
Temporary chats keep things slightly more private
the log of the conversation will not appear on the left side of your screen when it's over like it normally does
Temporary chats are not protected enough that you should feel comfortable sharing private information—definitely still don’t do that—but this is a nice option for chats you don’t necessarily need or want saved for your own use later
ChatGPT's memory function has gotten better over time
While some information about you will be stored passively as you use the tool (unless you turn it off in the settings)
I think actively engaging with ChatGPT's memory by telling it your preferences does lead to a better software experience overall
These are all issues I keep in mind as I’m using any AI tool

VAN HALEN singer David Lee Roth has announced nearly two dozen summer 2025 solo tour dates
Roth's 21-date trek is scheduled to launch on July 22 in Paso Robles
California and conclude on September 14 in Napa
A Live Nation pre-sale using the code "FREESTYLE" will begin Tuesday (May 6) at 10 a.m
CA - California Mid-State FairJuly 31 - Davie
FL - Seminole Hard Rock Tampa Event CenterAug
OK - Lucas Oil Live At WinStar World Casino And ResortAug
AZ - Gila River Resorts & Casinos - Wild Horse PassSep
Roth played his first full solo concert in more than five years Saturday night (May 3) at the 2025 edition of the M3 Rock Festival at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia
Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love (VAN HALEN song)16
Fan-filmed video of the performance can be seen below
"We've reached the end of my first retirement," David joked at one point during the show
Roth originally left VAN HALEN to pursue a solo career following the success of the band's album "1984"
but he returned for a stint in 1996 and then took over as VAN HALEN's frontman again from 2007 until 2020
although the band had not toured since 2015
Roth has been releasing solo versions of several VAN HALEN classics
2022 during a session at Henson Recording Studio in Hollywood
Joining Roth in the studio were Al Estrada on guitar
Ryan Wheeler on bass and Francis Valentino on drums
A total of 14 songs were recorded in two hours
The music and the vocals were tracked live with "no samples" and without the pitch-correction technology Auto-Tune
Roth canceled the remaining farewell shows he was set to play in Las Vegas after he vowed to retire from performing live
event organizers said the cancelations were made "due to unforeseen circumstances related to COVID and out of an abundance of caution for those working and attending the shows."
When Roth's Vegas residency was first announced
organizers promised "a changing set of 26 instantly recognizable songs
Roth postponed the final six shows of his Las Vegas residency due to the coronavirus pandemic that is spreading across the globe
Roth's last Vegas residency kicked off on January 8
2020 with a 15-song set that included 10 VAN HALEN classics and five songs from his solo career
Backing the singer were lead guitarist Al Estrada from the VAN HALEN tribute band ERUPTION
keyboardist Danny Wagner and drummer Mike Mussleman
Roth explained that he chose Vegas as the place to debut his new band because "this is where you come to celebrate and do the victory dance
In a February 2020 interview with StarTribune
Roth openly wondered whether his first tour since VAN HALEN completed its 2015 run of shows would be the last time he would perform
"I'm calling it 'The Last Tour'," he said at the time
"and then underneath it in parentheses: 'Unless It Isn't'
"But this kind of music requires the kind of energy that people in their 20s bring
You know what NFL stands for: Not For Long
I remember the days when we would stand around and say
'Let's go have a cigarette.' And that's what we did: Four guys having one cigarette
Roth performed as the opening act for the North American leg of KISS's "End Of The Road" farewell tour
gothic metal pioneers PARADISE LOST have announced the dates for the first leg of their "Ascension Of Europe Tour 2025"
Italian band MESSA will be direct support on all dates
dates and LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE on select mainland Europe shows
09 - UK - Manchester - New Century HallOct
10 - UK - Wolverhampton - KK's Steel MillOct
17 - UK - London - Islington Assembley HallOct
In a recent interview with Alejandrosis
PARADISE LOST guitarist Aaron Aedy spoke about the status of the follow-up to the band's latest album
which was released in May 2020 via Nuclear Blast
but it's recorded." Asked if he could give fans some details about the musical direction of the new PARADISE LOST material
It's like opening your presents before Christmas
I don't wanna go into the new album too much just yet
'cause I'll wait to see what it's like when it's mixed
This past March, PARADISE LOST guitarist Greg Mackintosh told Chile's PowerOfMetal.cl that the band's new LP would likely be released "September time." He added: "It's been the longest time we've ever had between albums
But that's kind of because of the pandemic as well… So shit happens
PARADISE LOST will embark on "The Devil Embraced" North American tour later this month
The trek will kick off on May 16 at the Milwaukee Metal Fest and conclude on May 24 at Maryland Deathfest
In a November 2023 interview with Jorge Botas of Portugal's Metal Global
PARADISE LOST singer Nick Holmes spoke about how the band's songwriting process has evolved over the decades
Nick said: "The writing process is 100 percent different to how we used to write when we were younger
but it's just — maybe you're kind of more fussy
You can listen to things more than maybe you would do in the old days
There isn't an element of that as much now
There's a lot of ping-ponging ideas backwards and forwards
and you have more time to dwell on things and think
It might be all right.' There's benefits of both ways of writing
you can have too long and you can have too short
We're just not the kind of band who can just kind of throw out a song and it's just brilliant
but I guess you can pretend that you're spontaneous and you just can throw out a genius song in about 10 minutes
I don't think that really happens with many people
has changed dramatically to where it was when we started."
When Botas noted that the different songwriting approach is something that was developed through experience
Holmes said: "When you start writing something
'This is fantastic,' and then you can wake up in the morning and you think it's rubbish
And then sometimes you have to take a step backwards
having a step backwards and maybe let someone else have a listen
Once you've gone to the top of the hill and you're coming down
Asked if he can still trust his instincts when writing music
you could hear something that's not necessarily you think
this is strange.' And then you've gotta listen to it and then get into the… I don't instantly dismiss something — I would never do that — but I've gotta give it a few [listens]
And if I still feel the same way after a few listens
But I don't instantly dismiss things 'cause I don't think that's really a positive thing to do
Asked if he can write a whole set of lyrics without music or if he needs the music to get some like melodies in his head
Nick said: "I prefer the music as a springboard to write lyrics to
And that's always something I've admired about certain bands over the years
I'm not particularly interested in hearing stories in songs
it's more about how the songs sound at a certain time
how the lyrics sound at a certain time and the words
but I prefer to have something to kind of bounce off
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of their fourth album, "Icon", PARADISE LOST re-recorded the LP for a special new release. There was also "an extra special vinyl" version of the album, both of which were made available in December 2023
"Icon 30" is a totally re-recorded version of "Icon"
and PARADISE LOST once again worked with longtime collaborator and producer Jaime Gomez Arellano
PARADISE LOST recorded the vocals and drums for "Icon 30" at Jaime's new studio Arda Recorders in Porto
The rest of the album was completed at Mackintosh's Black Planet Studios
"Icon 30" also features brand new artwork created by Scott Robinson and new liner notes from Kerrang!'s Nick Ruskell
"Icon" marked a departure from the death-doom sound of PARADISE LOST's early work and was the last album to feature Matthew Archer on drums
"Icon" was inducted into the Decibel "Hall Of Fame"
with the magazine naming it influential to the development of the gothic metal subgenre
PARADISE LOST welcomed Guido Zima Montanarini as their official new drummer
Finnish drummer Waltteri Väyrynen left PARADISE LOST to join OPETH
he issued a statement saying that his decision involved "absolutely no bad blood or drama whatsoever."
PARADISE LOST were unlikely candidates for metal glory when they slithered from the shadows and infiltrated the U.K
But not content with spawning an entire subgenre with early death/doom masterpiece "Gothic" nor with conquering the metal mainstream with the balls-out power of 1995's "Draconian Times"
they have subsequently traversed multiple genre boundaries with skill and grace
evolving through the pitch-black alt-rock mastery of 1990s classics "One Second" and "Host" to the muscular but ornate grandeur of 2009's "Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us" and "Tragic Idol" (2012),with the nonchalant finesse of grand masters
The band's "The Plague Within" (2015) and "Medusa" (2017) albums saw a much-celebrated return to brutal
via two crushing monoliths to slow-motion death and spiritual defeat

Josh Sens, senior writer (@joshsens): First, a tragic ravioli-making incident that sidelined him for a spell
Then a run-in with the reality that winning is hard and often comes with the tiniest margins
Scheffler now has nine starts this year and this to show for it: a win
Sean Zak, senior writer (@sean_zak): Other people got in the way
Scheffler was probably 85% as good this year as he was last year — and that 15% is just enough to let one or two other guys have their best week
but the numbers he put up this week should scare the rest of the field
Josh Schrock, news editor (@Schrock_And_Awe): A little bit of rust and good play from Rory McIlroy
Justin Thomas and others kept Scheffler out of the winner’s circle
Scheffler admitted that the ravioli injury set him back a little and that while he was pain-free
which led to un-Scheffler-like ball-striking
The win is Scheffler’s first in nine starts this season; he had four in 10 starts at this point last year
What side of the fence are you on: that this is the first step of another scorching Scheffler summer
Or is last year’s total too unrealistic to match
Sens: I think we can fairly expect a scorching summer from Scheffler
which doesn’t mean he might not also win Player of the Year for the third season in a row
I think he wins three more times this summer
Last year’s total is too unrealistic to match
Schrock: Is he going to win six more times this year
But I fully expect him to knock off a few more and win the first non-Masters major of his career
a title defense at the Travelers and at least one playoff event
Also victorious this week was Bryson DeChambeau, who won LIV Golf Korea for his first of the year
With the PGA Championship just two weeks away
Sens: Hard to say that either really “needed” a win
He had some close calls and uncharacteristic stumbles — to the point where he showed some very outward signs of frustration
and even borderline snippy-ness in some of his exchanges with the press
For a guy as at peace with himself as Scheffler
I guess you could say that the dry spell had begun to eat at him a bit
He had let wins slip a few times recently on LIV
So starting the day with a lead and shutting the door was good to see
You can bet he thinks his best is still better than Scheffler’s.
He held the 36-hole lead in Miami and got run down by Marc Leishman
He scored well through three rounds at Augusta and somehow held an early Sunday lead before iron play nuked his chances to win
He held the 36-hole lead last week in Mexico but lost to Joaquin Niemann
If he had lost to Richard Bland or Charles Howell III
I think the confidence would have taken a hit heading into Quail Hollow
and my opinion of him wouldn’t have changed
Had Bryson blown a four-stroke lead in Korea
I’d be down on his chances in two weeks
I think he’s the best [only?] chance at a person not named Scottie or Rory winning at Quail.
Brandt Snedeker (USA) and Geoff Ogilvy (International) were announced as Presidents Cup captains for the September 2026 event at Medinah Country Club outside of Chicago
And why might Ogilvy be the guy to end the International squad’s drought
Both likable players who have been around long enough to earn their peers’ respect on and off the course
including two wins at the WGC Championship
I think the influence of captains gets overstated in these events
The captains don’t hit shots or stroke putts
Pep talks and strategic pairings only go so far
Zak: I think we are seeing the result of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson both not being available to captain right now. This era of teams was supposed to be led by them, and neither are anywhere near assuming that position. So, we get Keegan at the Ryder Cup — which his own play may negate — and a non-major-winner but overall “good guy” in Snedeker
But something tells me Ogilvy will do a good job (in defeat) and then retain the position for the next Prez Cup
is going to continue to trot out six of the top 10 players in the world every two years
the International side probably doesn’t have much of a chance
I don’t think Ogilvy leads them to victory in 2026
but perhaps in 2028 when they play in Australia
4 Collin Morikawa has replaced long-time caddie J.J
who used to be with Max Homa and who recently won as a fill-in with Justin Thomas at the RBC Heritage
Morikawa has played well lately but is still winless since the fall of 2023
it’s just the psychological shift that comes with making a change
I don’t mean to dehumanize the player-caddie relationship
but I think there’s an analogy to be made with the seeming magic of swapping out a putter and suddenly draining every putt you look at
the confidence builds and a positive feedback loop kicks in
there’s got to be more to the dynamic than just that sudden sugar rush
Zak: A new caddie can have a ton of influence … in either direction
Because bringing a new person into that walking
walking and gawking is a vibe-shift that players will notice
it sounds like that’s what he was seeking — a vibe-shift
Possibly during contention the most.
Schrock: The vibe-shift might help Morikawa get over the hump if he immediately puts himself back in contention
If getting Greiner on the bag helps give him a different Sunday feel when he’s in contention
but in the end it’s on Morikawa to execute the shots down the stretch when he’s under pressure

McKINNEY, Texas -- Scottie Scheffler cradled his year-old son Bennett -- the reason he missed his beloved hometown CJ Cup Byron Nelson in 2024 -- and struggled to keep his emotions in check for a TV interview
just as he did a few minutes later during the victory speech
The top-ranked player had time to prepare for the moment because of the giant lead he took into Sunday's final round
and he even added a little drama by chasing the PGA Tour's 72-hole scoring record
Scheffler matched that mark of 253 set by Justin Thomas at the 2017 Sony Open and equaled six years later by Ludvig Åberg at the RSM Classic
closing with a 63 to finish at 31 under par
The runaway victory came 11 years after his PGA Tour debut at the Nelson as a high school senior
and 22 years after a photo was taken of then-6-year-old Scheffler with the tournament namesake
Scheffler couldn't help but think about that day in 2014
was his girlfriend -- not yet the mother of their first child -- and sister Callie
Scheffler finished with a 72-hole score of 253
tying the mark set by Justin Thomas at the 2017 Sony Open and matched six years later by Ludvig Åberg at the RSM Classic. LM Otero/AP"My family was all able to be here
and I think at times it all comes crashing down to me at once," Scheffler said
"We have a lot of great memories as kids coming to watch this tournament
and it's more of a dream to be able to win it."
Scheffler was in position to break the tour scoring record before a flubbed chip that led to bogey on the par-3 17th hole and a par from a greenside bunker on the par-5 closing hole
His 8-foot putt for birdie and the record slid by the left side of the hole
Hideki Matsuyama has the lowest score in relation to par this season
35 under on the par-73 Plantation Course at Kapalua
and I told you it was going to be a steep mountain to climb
which is kind of what you expect from the world No
Scheffler and Spieth finished with the two lowest rounds of the tournament
Scheffler opened with a 10-under 61 on Thursday at the defenseless par-71 TPC Craig Ranch in a suburban community about 30 miles north of Dallas
knowing his friend and fellow Texas alum was about to become the first of the pair to win the event they both cherish
Spieth was the first to make his tour debut at the Nelson
leading many to believe he would have won it by now
"I think I'll take it easy on him," Scheffler said with a chuckle
Spieth played with Scheffler the first two days and was 12 shots behind him going into the weekend
They started the tournament with 13 PGA Tour wins apiece
"It wasn't that long ago I was definitely better than him
and now I'm definitely not right now," said Spieth
but I just watched it those first two rounds
It was the first victory this year for Scheffler after he won 10 times before May in the previous three years combined
Scheffler's previous best Nelson finish was a tie for fifth in his most recent appearance two years ago. He's the first wire-to-wire Nelson winner since Tom Watson 45 years ago
"I'm not jealous of him winning this event over any other," Spieth said
Scheffler beat the previous Nelson scoring record of 259 set by Steven Bowditch in 2015. That tournament was played at the TPC Four Seasons. Normally a par 70, that course had a par-69 layout the final three days when heavy rain forced officials to convert a par 4 into a par 3. Bowditch finished 18 under.
The margin of victory was the second largest at the Nelson behind Sam Snead's 10-shot win in 1957, when it was known as the Dallas Open Invitational.
"This is a golf course where you can kind of make a run, and I knew that I couldn't just coast to the finish line today," Scheffler said. "I knew I had to put together a good round."
Because of heavy rain Wednesday and Friday, players were allowed to lift, clean and replace their golf balls in the fairway for the first three rounds, but not in the final round. Aberg had so-called preferred lies during the first rounds at the 2023 RSM Classic.
