Number of victims rises to four with death in hospital of Lt Col Arnaud Beltrame following attacks in Carcassonne
A gendarme who exchanged himself for a hostage during the French supermarket siege has died
Police shot dead the attacker after a series of attacks claimed by Islamic State in Carcassonne
that culminated in the three-hour hostage-taking
was born in Morocco and lived in Carcassonne
He was known to police for petty crimes and drug-dealing
The state prosecutor François Molins said he had been under surveillance in 2016 and 2017 for his “radicalism and proximity to Salafist movements” but had showed no signs he was going to carry out an attack

Photograph: AFP/Getty ImagesThe shooting spree and supermarket hostage-taking on Friday
which also left 16 people injured – including two very seriously – was the first major suspected terrorist incident since President Emmanuel Macron lifted France’s two-year state of emergency last autumn and toughened anti-terror laws
“Our country has suffered an Islamist terrorist attack,” Macron said in a televised address
Isis claimed responsibility for the attacks
Macron said French authorities were investigating the claim
Questions will be asked as to how Lakdim was able to obtain a weapon and carry out attacks when he had been monitored by security services
said: “We had monitored him and did not think he had been radicalised.” He added: “He was already under surveillance when he suddenly decided to act.”
stopped a white Opel Corsa car on the outskirts of Carcassonne
before shooting and killing the passenger and seriously injuring the driver
The prosecutor said Lakdim then drove off in the car and appeared to wait outside a military barracks for soldiers
He then drove to a riot police squad barracks and shot at four officers 200 metres away who had been out jogging
who suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung
Lakdim then drove to a Super U supermarket 8km away in Trèbes
a sleepy town of 5,000 people near Carcassonne
he walked into the shop shouting Allahu Akbar and claiming he was a soldier from Islamic State
killing one supermarket worker and one customer
He told BFM TV his first instinct was to hide his wife and other customers in a butcher’s fridge
before trying to escape through an emergency exit as the police arrived
“I saw one person on the ground and a person who had a handgun in one hand and knife in the other and was shouting,” he said
Gendarmes attempting to evacuate the supermarket found Lakdim holding several hostages
A gendarme volunteered to take the hostages’ place
so the gendarme stayed with him while others were evacuated
That gendarme left his mobile phone line open on a table so security forces outside could hear what was going on inside
When security forces outside the store heard via the telephone that a shot was fired
they immediately stormed the supermarket and shot Lakdim dead
Lt Col Arnaud Beltrame, the gendarme who had swapped places with the hostages
the French interior ministry said Beltrame had died from his injuries
Two other officers were injured by gunshots during the assault
The interior ministry said Lakdim was acting alone in Friday’s attack
The state prosecutor said he had been on an intelligence watchlist since 2014
Lakdim had been convicted twice in 2011 and 2015 for petty crime
The prosecutor said that during surveillance
security services had not seen signs that suggested Lakdim would commit an attack
A woman who lived with him was being questioned by police
0:22Police and ambulances at scene of French hostage situation – videoIn October last year, Macron toughened anti-terror laws and lifted France’s two-year state of emergency which had been declared by former president François Hollande on the night of the Paris attacks that killed 130 people in November 2015
Macron said the current terror threat in France was high but different to that two to three years ago when terrorist attacks were organised and ordered from within Syria and Iraq
the risk was from dangerous individuals in France who had radicalised themselves
French police have in recent years undertaken training to prepare for hostage-taking situations in supermarkets. In January 2015, after the terror attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, a gunman, Amédy Coulibaly, held hostages at a kosher supermarket in eastern Paris
killing four people before police shot him dead

PHOENIX — Officials in northwestern Arizona are still trying to determine the cause of a fire that killed five children over the weekend
Four siblings and a relative between the ages of 2 and 13 perished in the blaze at a home in Bullhead City on Saturday evening. The siblings’ father was out shopping when the fire broke out just before 5 p.m., according to the Bullhead City Police Department

Arnaud Beltrame’s coffin escorted through Paris on national day of mourning
France has honoured its heroic gendarme Arnaud Beltrame
who died saving hostages’ lives at a supermarket siege last week
gratitude and emotion the grieving country could muster
In a state ceremony that conveyed France’s pride and profound sadness, President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute on Wednesday to the officer who he said had the “gratitude
admiration and affection of the whole country”
It was the first time Macron had been called upon to deliver a state funeral homage since his election in May 2017
He stood grim-faced as the Marseillaise was played

military officers and members of the public
Beltrame’s coffin was carried into the cour d’honneur at Les Invalides by 10 gendarmes who had known him
in which he kept a photograph of himself with his wife
and his decorations were carried by two officers
He was posthumously promoted to colonel and made a commander of the Légion d’Honneur
Beltrame was hailed a hero after volunteering on Friday to take the place of a female hostage being held by the suspected Islamist gunman Radouane Lakdim
Lakdim hijacked a car, gunning down a passenger, then stormed a busy supermarket in the town of Trèbes near Carcassonne, killing a member of staff and a customer and declaring his allegiance to Islamic State
He was holding a 40-year-old woman hostage as police and special forces surrounded the building
Beltrame gave up his weapon and offered to take the place of the woman
the mother of a two-year-old girl who worked on the checkout
the gendarme was stabbed several times as he tried to disarm Lakdim
The gravely injured officer was flown by helicopter to hospital where he died a few hours later

Photograph: Ludovic Marin/APMacron spoke of the long minutes that passed as Beltrame’s colleagues watched as he “put down his weapon and walked alone to join the terrorist”
“With all his experience … he surely knew he had a rendezvous with death,” the president said
“He took this decision which was not just a sacrifice but was first of all being true to himself
true to his values and true to what he was and what he wanted to be
“He would not have allowed anyone to take his place
because he knew the example has to be set from the top… the light he has lit in us has not gone out.”
Wednesday’s ceremony also honoured the terrorist’s three other victims: Christian Medvès
who worked as a butcher at the Super-U in Trèbes; Hervé Sosna
was shot in the head and is in a critical condition in hospital
The words engraved on the facade of the 18th-century former church where France’s great and good are buried had never seemed more appropriate: “To great men

Beltrame and his wife were married in a civil ceremony in 2016 and were due to redeclare their vows in a church ceremony in June
The priest who was to have officiated at the wedding was called to Beltrame’s bedside where Marielle was keeping vigil on Friday evening to give him the last rites
told La Vie newspaper he was an “ideal husband” and a devoted gendarme
“Arnaud was profoundly attached to what he called the ‘gendarmerie family’ for which he didn’t count the hours
to enable them to give the best of themselves
“He was motivated by very high moral values
the courage of Lt Col Arnaud Beltrame was extraordinary
By offering to swap places with hostages held by a terrorist gunman who had already killed three people and had declared his allegiance to Islamic State (Isis)
the decorated officer would have known he was almost certainly walking to his death
In the last three years attackers with Islamist sympathies have attacked – and in certain cases killed – French police, gendarmes and soldiers on more than 10 occasions. Armed with nothing but this knowledge, Beltrame strode across the car park of the SuperU store in Trèbes, a small town near Carcassonne, to confront Radouane Lakdim
a self-described “soldier of the caliphate”
The Frenchman of Moroccan origin had carried out three separate attacks that day
culminating in a three-hour siege at the supermarket
where he killed a member of staff and a customer and took several hostages
Beltrame left his mobile telephone line open
enabling police and special forces outside the supermarket to hear what was going on
killing Lakdim and finding Beltrame gravely injured after being shot and stabbed
After the gendarme was helicoptered to a hospital, France held its breath and hoped for a happy ending
A brief statement from the interior minister
announced that Beltrame had made the ultimate sacrifice
Tributes poured in for the 45-year-old officer who
and the couple were planning a church ceremony
the priest who would have officiated at the wedding was called to Beltrame’s bedside
where Marielle was keeping vigil on Friday evening to give him the last rites
Apart from possible social and economic reasons that may drive disillusioned youngsters to extremism and France’s hard line on religious symbols like the burqa as well as the French military’s involvement in the US-led bombing of Syria
one reason France is targeted is that Isis specifically decided to target it
singled out the “spiteful French” for attack in September 2014
was known to police as a petty criminal and small-time drug dealer
and since 2014 he had been on France’s Fiche S list
meaning he was considered a potential threat
though intelligence officers reportedly decided he was not a serious risk
Although French police knew he had consulted pro-Islamic State websites
French prosecutor François Molins said there had been no evidence he was planning a terrorist act
saying Lakdim had shown “no sign of radicalisation”
He described his actions as that of “a loner who suddenly decided to act”
Islamic State claimed responsiblity for the attacks without giving any evidence
was taken into police custody for questioning
was brought in for police questioning on Friday evening
Beltrame’s family have been paying tribute to the courage of the officer
His brother Cédric said the gendarme would have walked into the supermarket knowing he would probably die
“He certainly would have known that he had practically no chance
He was very conscious of that … he didn’t hesitate a second,” Cédric Beltrame told RTL radio
adding that it was “perfectly appropriate” to describe his brother as a hero
not even for someone in his family,” he said
Beltrame’s mother also spoke to RTL on Friday before he died
that’s all.’ That’s just the way he is,” she said
said that the gendarme had been passionate about the military all his life
Arnaud has always talked about the army and being a soldier
That has been a passion in his life since he was a baby,” Nicolic told the BBC
“He used to play with tin soldiers all the time
His grandfather was in the army and was an idol and he wanted to do it.”
She added: “What he did was so wonderful and so brave
because that’s the thing he would do without hesitation
He wouldn’t think about the consequences.”
grew up in Brittany and had a distinguished career
earning commendations and military honours
He graduated from France’s elite military college
in 1999 with the rank of major and a commendation for his “resolutely offensive spirit when faced with adversity”
His superior officers noted that he was prepared to “fight to the end and never give up”
Beltrame underwent training for the gendarmerie
including for the special intervention unit
the elite GIGN (Groupe d’intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale)
whose missions include counter-terrorism and hostage rescue
He was given military honours in 2007 following a two-year posting to Iraq and later spent four years as part of the Garde républicaine at the Elysée Palace
before becoming a special adviser to the secretary-general of France’s environment ministry
He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel in 2016
“Lieutenant-colonel Arnaud Beltrame died serving the country to which he had already given so much. In giving his life to bring to an end the murderous actions of a jihadist terrorist, he has fallen a hero,” President Emmanuel Macron said
As a former member of the elite anti-terrorist police
As deputy commander of the Aude Gendarmerie
he had organised an exercise simulating a terrorist attack and mass killing in a supermarket only last December
Beltrame and his gendarmes must have thought such a scenario unlikely in a sleepy town like Trèbes

A man suspected of killing three people and holding shoppers in a French supermarket hostage has been named as Redouane Lakdim
Police stormed the shop in Trèbes, southern France, and killed the suspect. Officials believe he hijacked a car in Carcassonne at around 10am and killed one of the passengers.
He is then thought to have fired on a group of policemen who were jogging, wounding one in the shoulder, before driving to a supermarket three miles from Carcassonne and holding around 50 customers hostage.
He killed two of them and injured 16 more before police stormed the shop and shot him dead.
Those injured include a police officer who was swapped for a civilian hostage and was critically ill on Friday evening.
The 26-year-old was of Moroccan descent and lived with his parents and several sisters in an apartment in Carcassonne raided on Friday afternoon, Le Parisien reported.
A neighbour told the newspaper he was ”calm” and “nice” , saying he regularly attended his local mosque. Lakdim dropped his sister off at school on the morning of the massacre, they added.
The French President, Emmanuel Macron, said detectives will also try to find out exactly how and when Lakdim was radicalised.
He was known to the police for petty drug dealing, but was on a “watchlist” of suspected extremists and had been under surveillance.
Interior minister Gerard Collomb described him as a “radicalised petty criminal and small-time drug dealer”.
He said it was not clear whether he was a committed radical, adding: “It was more of a petty criminal who at a certain moment decided to act.”

after several months worth of rain fell in just a few hours last night
One person remains missing and eight others are seriously hurt after flash floods tore through towns in the Aude region
Local authorities in the Aude department said ten people were killed

The elderly nun was swept from her room by floodwaters at the Burning Bush priory in the village of Villardonnel
'The water crashed through the building's main door and on through the door to her room

Beltrame had taken the place of a woman who had been held as the final hostage in a supermarket by 25-year-old gunman Redouane Lakdim
who pledged allegiance to the Islamic State
Macron compared Arnaud Beltrame's actions to those of France's World War II heroes and said his example would "remain etched in French hearts."
"To accept to die so the innocent can live — that is the essence of what it means to be a soldier," Macron said
He had hoped he could negotiate with the attacker once customers and staff had been cleared from the supermarket
which is home to France's army museum and a veterans' retirement center

Macron's government has been criticized by right-wing opponents who say the attack was preventable
Lakdim had been on a list of suspected terrorists since 2014 and was being monitored
He also had previous convictions for drug use and handling a banned weapon
Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Front
accused the government of using the grief over Beltrame's death to "escape from its own incompetence and cowardice" in failing to combat Islamic extremism
Prime Minister Edouard Philippe responded to the criticism on Tuesday in parliament saying
"Those who say ignorantly that this attack could have been avoided
those who promise people zero risk — I say to them
these people bear a heavy responsibility in speaking so casually."
Philippe dismissed right-wing proposals to introduce a complete ban on ultra-conservative Salafism or "preemptively" detain radical Islamists
France already has a "legal arsenal" to "understand
more than 200 people have died in jihadist attacks over the past three years

Trèbes terror attack gunman shot dead after killing four people in France hostage situationA neighbour described the gunman as a 'pleasant young man' who would drop his sisters off at school

FRANCE has been left in mourning after a suspected ISIS gunman killed four people in a rampage that wound up in a supermarket shootout
But who is the 26-year-old killer who carried out the Trèbes attack
a 26-year-old petty criminal of Moroccan descent
Lakdim, who lived with his mother and four sisters at a council estate in Carcassonne, was known to the Directorate General of Homeland Security (DGSI), a police source told Le Parisien.
He is understood to have been "very active" on online jihadi forums and was subject to an S-file, meaning intelligence services considered him a security threat.
But a neighbour described the killer as a "pleasant young man" who took the youngest children to school every day.
It is even reported that he dropped off one of his sisters at school directly before the attack.
Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said he was known for petty crimes and possession of drugs, and had been jailed on drug charges in 2016.
He said that Lakdim had acted alone, adding: "He was known for petty crimes.
"We had monitored him and thought there was no radicalisation."
ISIS have now claimed responsibility for the attack, but have not yet given any evidence for the claim.
Lakdim is believed to have hijacked a car in Carcassonne at around 10am on March 23, 2018, killing one of the passengers.
He then fired on a group of policemen who were jogging, wounding one, before driving to Super U, a supermarket three miles from the British expat haven of Carcassonne.
There Lakdim killed a butcher and shopper before talking as many as 20 others hostage.
Lakdim had pledged allegiance to Syria and allegedly screamed "Vengeance for Syria!" during the attack and later demanded the release of Paris attacker Salah Abdeslam.
Police brought the hostage taker's mother to the superstore to persuade him to come out.
police stormed the building after a three-hour standoff
Redouane and the officer were both fatally wounded

spokesman for Clive's Eyes Security project team
The Clive community has rallied together to put an end to the recent spike in burglaries
The Clive's Eyes Security Camera Action Group headed by Andrew Clibborn was formed in August to make public cameras around the town a reality
"We are hoping to have two cameras up and running by Christmas and then we are looking to roll out more cameras in the coming months as we get more funding," Mr Clibborn said
Resident and committee member Marianne Trebes had lived in Clive for 12 years without a single burglary but was hit with two in one month earlier this year
"I never even had my garden gnome pinched until all of sudden burglaries have gone from nothing to absolute ludicrous."
She said her next-door neighbour had also been burgled twice and it became clear that almost daily different people were reporting things missing
Ms Trebes had wanted to start something that would combat the crime but still reeling from the effects of her burglaries approached other members of the community
"Within a week Andrew mustered up Civil Defence
police and the community and held a meeting at the Clive Rugby Rooms to start up an action group for security cameras."
Mr Clibborn said even though they cannot put a camera on every street
they aimed to create an envelope around Clive
"This is a huge community project and so far we have had no knockers
At this stage 29 local businesses have jumped on board and given funding towards the instalment of cameras
Ms Trebes was overwhelmed with the support
"I have just been jumping on my bike and knocking on doors and so far there has been a 98 per cent hit rate
Everyone is forthcoming and are giving a great contribution."
has lived and worked in the area for 30 years and is right behind the project
It is a good thing when we look out for one another and work to solve problems together."
has been in the area for 25 years and is also supporting the instalment of cameras
"I just want to improve the security throughout the town as I am concerned about the safety of the school
Vandalism is already an issue and could get a lot worse."
Heretaunga ward councillors Rod Heaps and Ann Redstone are also right behind the initiative
Mr Heaps said he gives full support if the community are willing to put the work in and tick all the boxes
"I hope we can fine tune and help organise the signage and positions of the cameras with where they can and can't go."
Ms Redstone believed the public cameras would provide residents with security and confidence
"One of my main focuses as a councillor is safer communities and I applaud this group of people who have put many hours of their personal time towards investigating the possibility of security cameras for Clive."
