Troyes, the French club owned by the City Football Group, have been reinstated into Ligue 2 following Bordeaux’s administrative relegation
Troyes were relegated from Ligue 1 in 2022-23 and suffered a second successive demotion this year amid ongoing fan protests against the club’s CFG ownership.
Bordeaux informed the French Football Federation (FFF) last week of their intention of abandoning their 87-year professional status after being demoted to the Championnat National — the third level of the French football pyramid
were retrospectively relegated after the Direction Nationale du Controle de Gestion (DNCG
the body responsible for overseeing the finances of French football clubs) adjudged they could not provide financial guarantees ahead of the 2024-25 season
Liverpool’s owner Fenway Sports Group (FSG) had been in talks over buying the club
which may have offered them a lifeline to stay in the second division
Bordeaux could yet be demoted further should additional financial guarantees not be provided
and they must convince the DNCG that they have the budget to operate in the third tier
which is a mix of professional and non-professional clubs
who finished 17th in Ligue 2 and the highest of the four relegated clubs
to present their budget to the DNCG to successfully apply to be reinstated in Ligue 2 for 2024-25

A club statement from Troyes on Tuesday confirmed their return to Ligue 2
“We are taking stock of this decision and are working today to build a team that will fight with ambition and represent Troyes with humility this season and for a sustainable future,” the statement read
“The club has a sincere thought for Bordeaux
its employees and supporters and we wish them the best for the future.”
Troyes were bought by City Football Group in September 2020 but despite promotion to Ligue 1 in that 2020-21 season
their results on the pitch have suffered in the past two campaigns
They finished 19th in Ligue 1 in 2022-23 — 12 points from safety — and have only avoided relegation to the third tier due to Bordeaux’s off-field situation

ESTAC Troyes have announced the precautionary suspension of their head coach David Guion one week before the start of the Ligue 2 campaign
he would be the fourth manager to be fired since December 2021
Guion only joined midway through the last season replacing Patrick Kisnorbo
ultimately the former FC Girondins de Bordeaux and Stade de Reims man had not done enough to steer the club away from relegation to the third division at the end of the last campaign
Troyes had been preparing for life in the Championnat National, but they were provided a lifeline when Bordeaux announced that they would be accepting their administrative relegation from Ligue 2
It appears likely that Guion will not be provided another chance to take the helm of the sister club of Manchester City and Girona FC after his suspension, with L’Équipe writing that a candidate from the City Football Group could be an option as his successor

ESTAC Troyes are set to appoint former EA Guingamp head coach Stéphane Dumont in the next few hours as their next manager according to a report by Le Parisien journalist Marc Mechenoua
Last week, Troyes had announced a precautionary suspension of their current head coach David Guion
It had appeared highly likely that Guion would not manage Troyes again following the suspension
The manager had only been appointed in December to the role following the firing of Patrick Kisnorbo
he was unable to dramatically improve results and the club were relegated from Ligue 2 to Championnat National
Following FC Girondins de Bordeaux’s administrative relegation
Troyes were given a lifeline and maintained their position in Ligue 2 for another season
Guion would not be provided the same blessing and it now appears imminent that his time at Les Champenois will officially come to an end
Stade Brestois take on ESTAC Troyes in the Coupe de France on Tuesday night
they will have to do so without influential midfielder Mahdi Camara
whilst Eric Roy is also expected to rotate his side for the encounter and rest some key players
Against a Troyes side fighting against relegation in Ligue 2
Brest may fancy their chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Coupe de France
whilst giving the likes of Pierre Lees-Melou
It is expected to be a much-changed side that take to the Stade de l’Aube and one likely captained by Hugo Magnetti
and Jonas Martin are all absent for Les Ty-Zéfs
Savinho's transfer to Manchester City from Troyes has come under scrutiny following completion of the big-money deal.

Manchester City have completed their first signing of the close season with a deal worth up to £33.6 million ($43.4m) for the services of Savio
The Brazil winger signed a five-year contract with the Premier League champions after excelling for Girona in La Liga last season
Savio's nine goals and 10 assists in Spain's top flight helped the Catalan club to achieve UEFA Champions League qualification for the first time in their history
Those performances also sealed a place in Brazil's Copa America squad for the 20-year-old
who bagged his first senior international goal in the 4-1 group-stage win over Paraguay
But given Girona's status as a member of the City Football Group — one of the clubs in which City's ownership body has a stake — how has this transfer been allowed to happen
especially as UEFA recently ruled on multi-club ownership in relation to City and their neighbours Manchester United
MORE: Girona's best players in 2023/24
UEFA cleared City and United to take part in its club competitions next season after reviewing conflicts around the CFG's ownership of City and INEOS' control of football operations at Old Trafford
European football's governing body does not allow clubs with the same ownership to be involved in the same competitions
which created respective issues for City in relation to Girona and United considering INEOS' stake in French Ligue 1 club Nice
who will join them in the Europa League in 2024/25
UEFA's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) said significant changes had been made at Girona and Nice to "substantially restrict investors' influence and decision-making power"
The shares that the City and United ownerships have in Girona and Nice have been transferred through independent trustees to a blind trust that will be supervised by the CFCB
Both Premier League teams have agreed not to transfer players
This meant United's mooted interest in Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo was left dead in the water
Why are Man City allowed to sign Savio?Quite simply
City could sign Savio because he was not a Girona player
The Brazilian spent last season on loan in Spain from French club Troyes
Contractually, Savio became a Troyes player once again when his loan at Girona expired on June 30. Therefore, his parent club will receive the potential transfer windfall of £33.6m — with the deal broken down into £21m upfront and a further £12.6m in performance-related add-ons, as per the Manchester Evening News
given Troyes stand as a stark contrast to Girona's CFG success story
they suffered a second successive relegation to France's third tier and fans protested against the CFG's ownership
Troyes were ultimately spared from relegation after Ajaccio entered administration and were relegated to the Championnat National
Riyad Mahrez's move to Saudi Arabia after City's treble-winning campaign of 2022/23 and Cole Palmer's subsequent switch to Chelsea left Pep Guardiola short of specialist right-wing options
Phil Foden or Bernardo Silva tended to feature on the right flank last season but each prefer to operate more centrally and Kyle Walker was often tasked with providing natural width from right-back
Guardiola might therefore hope Savio can provide a different option in what has become a problem position in relative terms
Most of Savio's standout La Liga displays for Girona came on the left
but Jeremy Doku and Jack Grealish mean City are well stocked on that side of the field
Norway youngster Oscar Bobb is another exciting option on the right for Guardiola and will hope to kick on after making his first-team breakthrough in 2023/24
Sávio vs Jeremy Doku 23/24 pic.twitter.com/vuwBngdgO8
City depart for a four-game preseason tour of the United States on Friday
Savio is not set to feature in any of these games following Guardiola's decision to grant any players who reached the quarterfinals of Euro 2024 exemption from the tour
Savio's part in Brazil's run to the quarterfinals of the Copa America is similarly set to rule him out
alongside Argentina's Copa-winning forward Julian Alvarez
The August 10 Community Shield clash with Manchester United is Savio's most likely debut game at this stage
The clash at Wembley is a rematch of May's FA Cup final
which United won 2-1 to deny City the unprecedented feat of becoming the first men's team in England to claim back-to-back domestic doubles

Willem II have signed Amar Fatah on loan from Troyes, as per Voetbal International reports
The 20-year-old Swedish youth international went through the ranks at Stockholm club AIK and made his debut in professional football at the age of seventeen
Troyes, part of the City Football Group, allowed the youngster to trial with Pep Guardiola’s Man City side during pre-season
and the winger has clearly made his presence known in brief appearances against AC Milan and Barcelona
Speaking of his trial period with the Cityzens
“The preparation under Guardiola was a unique experience
But it is important for me to keep playing matches.”
is something that the newly-promoted Tilburg side can provide
be important for the team and develop myself as a person and player
I am a winger who relies on his speed and creativity
I therefore expect that Dutch football suits me better.”
Fatah joins Willem II
who currently sit in seventh and follows in the footsteps of another fine talent – Alexander Isak:
“I know that Isak also played for Willem II
his career is an example for many Swedish footballers
Hopefully I can take the same steps as he did.“

Ndiaye had been a rare bright spot in Troyes’ otherwise disappointing season that saw the club relegated (although they will likely now remain in Ligue 2 due to the administrative relegation to FC Girondins de Bordeaux)

he will now be leaving on a loan deal to Brest with an option to purchase for €9 million

Troyes said in a statement after the match that the club “condemns the actions of a minority of supporters following this evening’s home game against Valenciennes
“Pyrotechnic devices were thrown from the stands onto the field on several occasions
which ultimately prevented the end of the match
These actions resulted in the referee having no choice but to suspend the match before its conclusion.”
The statement concluded: “The context of fan disappointment does not excuse or mitigate this behavior
and we now await decisions from the football authorities.”
They finished 19th in Ligue 1 last season — 12 points from safety — and they are now set for relegation to the Championnat National
City Football Group are majority-owned by Abu Dhabi United Group
City Football Group's Troyes will remain in France's second-division Ligue 2 following Bordeaux's relegation to the third tier after filing for bankruptcy
the French football league (LFP) said Tuesday
"No action (will be) taken against the club by the DNCG (National Directorate of Management Control) in relation to its remaining in Ligue 2..
subject to it maintaining professional status by decision of the LFP's board of directors," the league said in a statement
Troyes were set to drop into France's third division
But Bordeaux's demotion from Ligue 2 to the third-tier National due to their financial woes has enabled the City Football Group club to stay up
vowing to "build a team that will compete with ambition and represent Troyes with humility"
"The club's thoughts are with Girondins de Bordeaux
and we wish them all the best for the future," it said in a statement
six-time French champions Bordeaux announced they would become an amateur club for the first time in almost 90 years after filing for bankruptcy
The club needs to find €40 million to balance their books and had been in talks with the owners of Liverpool
before the American investors pulled out of negotiations this month
In an official statement
Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Brazillian attacker Savinho (20) from Troyes as their first recruit of the summer
The forward leaves the Championnat National club after never playing a senior match for them and spending several seasons out on loan
Savinho was most recently on loan at Girona
the transfer is set to cost the Premier League winners a fee up to £33.6m
The initial fee received by the French third tier is set to be £21m
The former PSV loanee has signed a contract with Manchester City that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2029
The transfer was an advantageous one for City due to the existing relationship between the two clubs
Troyes are also owned by UAE-backed City Football Group
This meant there would have been minimal issues during negotiations for Savinho

Check out the key numbers and stats from Les Parisiens’ 4-3 win over ESTAC at the Parc des Princes on Matchday 13 of Ligue 1 yesterday
It was a prolific game at the Parc des Princes on Saturday
just a few days after the nine-goal encounter against Maccabi Haifa
with Troyes becoming the first team to score three goals away to Paris in Ligue 1 since Bordeaux on 23rd February 2020 (another 4-3 win for PSG)
No team had taken the lead twice in the same top-flight game against Paris at the Parc des Princes since Rennes on 17th November 2012
THE MATCH REPORT
With the opener going in after 2 minutes and 14 seconds
it was the earliest goal that Paris had conceded at home in Ligue 1 since 26th September 2018
when current Troyes man Xavier Chavalerin scored for Reims after 1 minute and 50 seconds
That was before Paris's attacking trio set the game alight
As well as setting the game alight, they also had a quick reply to both goals scored by Troyes's Mama Baldé. At least one of Les Rouge et Bleu's attacking trio has been directly involved in each of Paris's last 25 goals in all competitions, with the last goal to have been scored by a different player and without an assist for any of the three being Nuno Mendes's strike against Nantes in Ligue 1 on 3rd September 2022
With more and more chemistry being created between them, Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr all scored in the same Ligue 1 game for the third time on Saturday
following on from the matches at home to Lorient on 3rd April and away to Lille on 21st August
Messi has both scored and assisted in three consecutive games across all competitions for both club and country for the first time since his four-game run in this respect between December 2017 and January 2018
He also scored his fourth goal from outside the box this season (as well as his fourth this October) against Troyes – the joint-highest tally of any player in Europe's top five leagues across all competitions
Having scored his second goal for Paris just days after getting his first in the Champions League, Carlos Soler is certainly getting his bearings
the midfielder is the first player other than Messi
Neymar and Mbappé to score for PSG in two successive games across all competitions this season
Only Brazil are better-represented as a country among the club's foreign players in this respect
with ten Brazilians having netted for the capital club in the same time period
as the 36-year-old hasn't lost a single one of his first 30 matches for Paris in all competitions
who was unbeaten in his first 29 games for PSG.
