On October 3rd, the foundation stone of the new Thales building was laid during a ceremony attended by representatives from Thales, the prefect of Hauts-de-Seine, the mayors of Meudon and Vlizy, as well as representatives from partner companies, Covivio and Eiffage Construction.
The new Vlizy-Meudon site builds on the existing site in Vlizy-Villacoublay, which already houses over 3,000 employees. It will thus become the largest Thales site in the world in terms of surface area and workforce: it will cover 110,000 square meters and host more than 5,500 people.
The result of the Group's commitment to innovation, the site aims to become a center of excellence in the field of civil and military flight safety and security. It will develop air traffic management solutions as well as air surveillance and defense systems to ensure nations' sovereignty over their airspace.
The site will promote team cooperation and ensure employees' needs in terms of safety, available equipment, connectivity, and environmental respect. For Herv Dammann, Deputy General Manager of Thales's Land and Air Systems activities, it is a "bold future we are building together".

Generous outdoor spaces for residents. Just a few steps from the Meudon forest (France), this residence is the expression of contemporary architecture, highlighted by its many outdoor spaces that punctuate the façade.
The project includes two buildings with low-carbon, bioclimatic apartments, with generous outdoor spaces (balconies, terraces, and private gardens) for residents' comfort. A wooden wall is left exposed in each apartment, adding a warm touch. The top floors offer wide views of the 2,200m² landscaped park in the heart of the site. Commercial premises on the first floor bring the new district to life.
© Cyrille WeinerSustainability: wood is at the heart of the project. Wood is at the heart of this housing project. Exemplary in terms of carbon emissions over its entire life cycle, it has been awarded the BBCA (Low Carbon Building) label.
© Cyrille WeinerIt is made of CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) for the floor, façade, and walls from the first floor upwards, and combines bioclimatic design, control energy use, and carbon storage with more than 2,000 m3 of solid wood in the structure.
© Cyrille WeinerInnovations and technical specifications. Solar panels installed on the roof ensure a virtuous cycle of exploitation of natural resources. The floors of the balconies are made from the recovery of CLT window off-cuts. The facade coating was made with an ATEX (a French label for the creation of technical innovation) developed specifically for the project. The railings are made of Geolam composite wood resin, a durable and weather-resistant material.
Plan Lot C - 1st floorThe solid wood CLT structure is prefabricated in the factory, which halves the duration of the structural work, limits the number of truck rotations on site by 6 to 8 compared to concrete construction, and reduces the nuisance of the construction site for local residents.
French wood flooring with the PEFC label (certifying sustainable forest management) was chosen to reduce the building's carbon footprint

Recharge in a Restored Spanish Farmhouse in Menorca
The best part of movie theaters is usually when the lights go down. Not so for the new Cinéma UGC Vélizy 2 in Île-de-France’s north-central area Vélizy-Villacoublay. Thanks to Paris-based Atelier d’Architecture Lalo
the 143,000-square-foot complex is as much a draw as any superhero extravaganza
“I thought about a spaceship bringing us elsewhere
to the stars,” says founder Jean-Marc Lalo
I thought about the contrast between light and heavy elements.”
All that thinking resulted in a faceted ceiling of baffles between steel columns
angling into view above concrete balconies and benches that nod to classic cinema amphitheater seating in the 18 screening rooms
A monumental neon installation is another blockbuster touch
“The ceilings are exploded,” Lalo says
“with split white surfaces that receive color through spotlights
as if time were stopped.” Or as if the ceilings were silver screens themselves

this project confirms the architects’ interest in the creation of public spaces
based on the need to design ‘places of urbanity’ and the desire to share the present in evocative locations
Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (the Franco-Dutch group active in the sector of real estate management
and a worldwide giant in shopping and retail real estate) and UGC have incorporated the new UGC Ciné-Cité in the project of revitalization of a shopping center and tramway
two dramatic escalators connecting the various levels
perspectives and suspended volumes in concrete that welcome the public on the way to the movie theaters
permitting gradual passage between the walkways and the cinemas
designed as belvederes or zones for events
with screens perfectly proportioned to the size of the rooms
lighted by ceiling fixtures that alternate with softer lateral lamps
similar to drops of water clinging to the walls
The multiplex stands out for its sober architectural choices
with ceilings that create interesting geometric effects thanks to triangular panels hung at different levels
The lighting combines spotlights with white beams that also mark the raised walkways
The box offices in wood are positioned below the staircases and the connections
to make room for the customers who can relax in the central foyer
where seats and tables alternate with wooden structures resembling small flights of steps
Architecture and cinema cross paths in this project that also offers spectators two works of art
The first is a video by the Spanish artist Hector Castells Matutano

The Cat is a neon work by Claude Levêque that captivates and welcomes film buffs before they enter the theaters

Rome: Italian deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini fuelled tensions between the government and Stellantis Sunday
amid a row over automobile production costs and incentives in Italy
Salvini's far-right League party said it would demand answers in parliament about how much public money the world's fourth-largest carmaker has received and how many workers have been laid off
It followed claims by Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares Friday that producing cars in Italy was too expensive due to energy costs
and that greater demand for electric vehicles would only come through bold incentives
Salvini's League said it was "launching Operation Truth" against Stellantis
It demanded to know "how much public money the group has collected over the years
how many Italian workers have been laid off or suspended
and how many factories have been opened abroad"
said Tavares "should be ashamed and apologise" for "mismanaging an historic Italian company"
Stellantis is the result of the merger in 2021 of France's Peugeot-Citroen and Italian-American company Fiat-Chrysler
Tensions have been mounting for several months between the government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Stellantis
with Rome accusing the multinational of relocating its production to low-cost countries to the detriment of Italian factories
The government in September decided to withdraw European Union funds intended for an electric car battery "gigafactory" over uncertainty over the time-table of the project from ACC -- a joint venture including Stellantis
Mercedes and French oil and gas giant TotalEnergies
Italy is still very attached to combustion engine cars and the automaker lobby is a powerful one
The industry is facing a 2035 EU deadline to phase out new sales of petrol-powered cars -- a ban Meloni's government
