Anthony probably could forget his dog is even nearby
But whether he's right beside him or yards away
Fin "Fineaus" never takes his gaze off his owner
It is because of that amazing bonding and Fin's extensive training that the two will head to Vendenheim
Mondioring is a European dog sport that tests the ability of the canine to protect both itself and its handler
The competition consists of three sections: obedience
the owner of Anthony's Balanced Canine — or AB Canine — in Center Township
it is the training of his own dog that has resulted in the opportunity of a lifetime
"Fin is the perfect dog," Anthony said of his soon-to-be 5-year-old
who captured the first Mondioring competition in Pennsylvania in 2013 and is considered the sixth-best Mondioring 3 dog in the United States
started conducting field trials for dogs in the 1980s
"I had dogs all my life growing up and they always fascinated me," he said
"I was always interested in their intelligence and what they were capable of doing."
He served as a police officer in Midland and Ohioville before becoming police chief in Industry in 1992
His first police K-9 was a Belgian Malinois named Gideon
"and I got really familiar with the species."
Anthony went on to become a bodyguard for chief executive officers of two Fortune 500 companies and used his personal dogs to help with their protection
he and Nichole Busick-Felouzis became partners in AB Canine
"I had nothing when I started out," he said
I was training dogs around a burn barrel in Midland
"But this is something I was passionate about
Business began to pick up when Anthony and Busick-Felouzis opened their current location on Elkhorn Road in Center
But as AB Canine grew and Anthony acquired Fin and began to train him in earnest
So he began to assemble a staff — made up of all volunteers
many of whom had problem dogs of their own when they walked in the door
Those volunteers now handle much of the training and conduct classes for him
And as Anthony's team joined forces to cover the various aspects of training
he says something amazing began to happen — dogs thought to be untrainable and unreachable began to be saved
"A lot of dogs who come here were scheduled to be euthanized and a caring individual took a look at them said
Let's try to save this dog,'" Anthony said
"This is the last chance for a lot of these dogs," said volunteer Tammi Potts
a Hopewell Township resident who has spent the last three years with Anthony and now is in charge of K9 nose work at AB
where death row was called the 'Green Mile.'"
Do Anthony and his staff ever fail with a dog that just can't be rehabilitated
"There is no failure when we are training a dog," Anthony said
"It would be a failure if we couldn't fix it
"Usually it's a matter of working through the layers of stress to find out why the dog is reactive
then you start with modifying its behavior."
no longer is a partner in AB Canine (she still makes frequent visits to the Centerlocation and helps when she can)
Anthony now relies on a staff that is led by his girlfriend
who handles scheduling and manages the everyday operation
Ashley Majetic of Hopewell Township works with the weight pull and bully breed classes; Cherrie Nichols of Patterson Heights with the behavior class; Kayla Long of Rochester with the bully breed class; Dave Thomas of Patterson Heights is involved in boot camp and doggie day care; and Jason Pearce of Aliquippa wears a bite suit to serve as a decoy during dog training
The group does community service work and partners with the Beaver County Humane Society
where it provides free training and holds a birthday party for the dogs each year
we have our little spats and you might see a temper tantrum here and there
but it takes every one of these people to see the dogs and their humans succeed."
Anthony credits several mentors for his training capabilities
First came world-class trainer Tecla Walton of Baltimore
He now works extensively with another world-class trainer
It is Dunlap who is helping him prepare Fin for competition in France
Although Anthony and Fin technically are alternates
Anthony said there usually are openings among the 50 spots available from throughout the world
Fin's best Mondioring score is 334 out of a perfect 400
Fin will have to prove he is proficient at food refusal (judges will put plates of food in his face and he cannot react or receive commands from Anthony)
the dog has to protect his owner who is being attacked
Anthony is looking for a larger building to handle his increased business
"This little building has served us very well
"We've bid to have the Mondioring nationals come to Beaver County
which will be a really big deal if we're able to get it."
Although dog training is Anthony's livelihood these days
he said the satisfaction he gets from helping — and in many cases saving — a dog is what keeps him going
"If we are making progress with a dog with behavioral problems and the owner comes to pick him up
Let's keep going with him a little longer.' We don't ever walk out the door while there is progress being made
"I've had people call me at 11 o'clock at night crying
Everyone else told me there was no other option but to put him down.'
Fin himself sleeps in bed with Anthony every night
but he's also my pet," Anthony said as Fin looked at him adoringly and came close for a snuggle
"We're a team in every sense of the word."

An original orchestra called Transparences is about to present its latest work at a concert in Vendenheim near Strasbourg on Thursday
a French jazz musician and science historian
It is the fruit of historical and musical research
Some of the orchestra's objectives are to rediscover and let others know about the repertoire of glass instruments and exploring new sound horizons while also creating new instruments based on the acoustic richness of the glassmaker's materials
the orchestra plays an original repertoire written for these instruments which include glass bells
chimes and seraphs (sets of drinking glasses)
The musical use of glass bells and struck glass is thought to have originated in the 15th century

Currently, travelling from Luxembourg to Strasbourg by train takes at least two hours. The new high-speed rail tracks will also shorten the travel time between Strasbourg and Paris from 2.20 to 1.50 hours.
The bill for the project is footed by France, as the new tracks are located in Lorraine and Alsace, between Baudrecourt, Metz, Nancy and Vendenheim, the closest TGV stop to Strasbourg.
The regions will have to raise 2.1 billion euros for the project. The European Investment Bank on Tuesday granted a 120 million euro loan to the Lorraine region for the infrastructure development.
