Illinois softball head coach Tyra Perry announced the addition of Kirsten Verdun to her coaching staff on June 10
Verdun serves as an assistant coach and will be working primarily with the Illinois pitching staff
In her first season on the staff with the Orange and Blue
Illinois pitchers posted a 4.83 ERA with three shutouts on the year
Illini ace Tori McQueen recorded double-digit strikeouts on four separate occasions
Verdun came to Champaign-Urbana following eight seasons at Wisconsin where she was the Associate Head Coach for the Badger softball program
Wisconsin appeared in four NCAA Tournaments
Verdun’s pitchers earned All-Big Ten honors six times and NFCA All-Region accolades on seven occasions
the Badgers’ ace Maddie Schwartz was named to the All-Big Ten First Team and the NFCA Great Lakes All-Region Second Team in 2023
Verdun also served as the Badger’s recruiting coordinator
she organized recruiting trips and visits and served as a liaison between the program and the top clubs and teams in the country
Verdun served as a graduate assistant with Louisville in 2014-15
She assisted the coaches with office duties
Before joining the collegiate coaching ranks
Verdun played professionally for two years with the Chicago Bandits
She signed with the Bandits via open tryouts in May 2014 and made her National Pro Fastpitch league debut in the circle against the Akron Racers on May 30
She pitched the Bandits to her first win against the Pennsylvania Rebellion in a complete game outing on July 26
Verdun posted a 1-0 record with one save and 13 strikeouts in her first season with the Bandits
Verdun tossed a complete-game shutout in the Bandits’ NPF opener against the Rebellion
she helped the squad to a Cowles Cup championship
Verdun was a two-time All-American (2012 and 2014) and helped DePaul to two NCAA regional final appearances and earned the 2014 Big East Conference regular season and tournament titles
Verdun was named the 2014 Big East Pitcher of the Year in addition to being named the Most Outstanding Player of the Big East Championship
The star-studded pitcher became the first pitcher in program history to accumulate 900 innings with more than 900 strikeouts and 100 or more wins
She currently holds the Blue Demons’ school record for career starts
while finishing second in the record books in wins
The four-time all-conference and all-Great Lakes Region selection was a double threat in the circle and at the plate
knocked out 37 home runs and ranks second in DePaul’s record books
She holds the record for most career walks with 156
Verdun was just as successful in the classroom as she was in the circle
The Big East Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2014
Verdun was named to the DePaul University Dean’s List eight consecutive quarters
the DePaul University Athletic Director’s honor roll every quarter and landed a spot on the Big East All-Academic team from 2011-2014
Verdun graduated from DePaul in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Media with a minor in applied psychology
There are currently no upcoming BIG+ streams

This is the fourteenth part in a series about riding night trains across Europe and the Near East to Armenia—to spend time in worlds beyond the pathological obsessions of Donald Trump
readied an illegal attack on Yemen’s Houthi rebels by assembling a Signal chat room and sharing both attack plans and emojis
as if on Facebook pulling together a bachelor party.)
Erzurum is a fortress city in eastern Turkey surrounded by tall mountains and many redoubts
and it has been the scene of endless battles between Russia and the Ottoman Empire
I was early for the Dogu Express and killed time by inspecting Atatürk’s sleeping car
which is on permanent display along a platform
He used the car for “his domestic travels”
there’s a photograph of Atatürk looking out a train window
Atatürk wanted Turkey to be a secular nation
He favored equal rights for women and minorities
and he saw no reason that women should wear headscarves or that men should pray five times a day
He wanted to integrate Turkey into western alliances and economic systems
and he personally enjoyed many western products as he moved around the growing nation in the 1920s and 30s
Some say it was from consuming half a liter daily of Turkish raki (it’s about 50% proof)
Others say he died from chain smoking cigarettes all his adult life
Atatürk was the “father of the Turks.” In his personal life he was unmarried
but divorced his wife for unknown reasons and lived alone (although surrounded by his presidential staff
There has been some speculation that Mustafa Kemal might well have been bisexual
just innuendo in conversations and speculation in various biographies
In official publications Atatürk was a devout Muslim
but there’s ample indication that he might well have been agnostic (although he denied having said: “I have no religion
and at times I wish all religions at the bottom of the sea…”)
Certainly in his political lifetime he (unlike Erdoğan) made little effort to fuse church and state
Nor did he arrest journalists and opposition party leaders (at least not more than was necessary)
Atatürk preferred to see Turkey and Turks as apart from the Arab and fundamentalist Islamic worlds
and he took it in stride that Mecca and Medina were no longer part of his empire
built to connect the Sublime Porte to the holy cities
he changed the Turkish alphabet from Arabic to Latin.) He preferred business suits and
dressed casually in sweaters and messed around in boats
on formal occasions he preferred top hats and tails
After boarding and stowing my bicycle under my berth
which is that I was in a full compartment of four passengers
At least I had a lower berth and my assigned seat was next to the window
For fellow travelers I was lucky to have been allotted two cheerful Erasmus (exchange) students
who were studying architecture in Istanbul
They were on their spring break and had decided to ride the train to Kars
The sleeping car was adjacent to the dining car
where I found it easy to work on my computer and look out the window
The meals were “ready to eat” frozen foods—not the chef’s special—but acceptable provided they were washed down with a cold Turkish beer
I might not have gotten my dream of a single compartment and a traditional dining car
but I was happy to be heading east on the Dogu Express
having spent so much time in the previous years plotting a course to Erzurum and Kars
when I embarked on a round-the-world journey using nothing but discount airlines for my travels
I wanted to see if I could make it around for less than $1500
which in one case included some battlefields in Bulgaria from the 1877 Russo-TurkishWar
I began the trip flying on Wizz Airlines from Geneva to Sofia for about $38
and the next morning early I took the train to Pleven (sometimes called Plevna)
attacking Russian troops (who said Russia only gets invaded by the West?) besieged Plevna for almost six months until they finally broke through the Turkish lines
Much remains of the siege lines in the modern Bulgarian city
Under The Red Crescent: Adventures Of An English Surgeon With The Turkish Army At Plevna And Erzeroum
which describes the war’s end in the deep snow around Erzurum
I remember looking up Erzurum on maps in the Pleven war museums
in a World War I museum in Istanbul on the same trip
I discovered that the Russians had again attacked Erzurum in 1916
during their Caucasus offensives in World War I
In those battles the Russians had taken the fortress city and held it until they withdrew from the war in 1918
when my friend Geoffrey Moorhouse published a book (To the Frontier) about the Northwest Frontier Territory in Pakistan
and the New York Times assigned its review to another travel writer
Geoffrey (who lived in England) asked me in New York if I knew anything about Glazebrook
other than that he had once written a book entitled Journey to Kars
which in those days had me leaning over an atlas to figure out where Kars was
I assumed it was on the dark side of the moon
not simply in eastern Turkey on the main line of Dogu Express.)
and then wrote a letter to the New York Times that I have always admired
perfectly entitled to say whatever he thinks about my book “To the Frontier” (June 16)
that among his generally withering comments he failed to mention that “To the Frontier” won the Thomas Cook Award for the best travel book of 1984
a competition in which the runners-up were those two considerable writers Eric Newby and Norman Lewis and an understandably disappointed newcomer named Philip Glazebrook
in view of his public hostility to my book in New York
that he should have been effusive about it when we met at the prizegiving in London
Geoffrey and I were close friends until he died in 2009
and we exchanged many letters and visits during the course of our friendship
a “journey to Kars,” was any ordinary trip dressed up as an adventure
something I had in mind as I embarked on my own travels to the Turkish frontier
Kars had also come to my attention in 2021
when during a lull in the pandemic and just before the Russian war with Ukraine
I decided to take my folding bicycle on a series of night trains from Moscow to Crimea
It wasn’t the first time I had tried to get to Crimea
I had train tickets to Simferopol when the Russian president Vladimir Putin sent his little green men to take over and annex Crimea
rendering my Ukrainian visa useless for getting there
after about five visits to the Russian consulate in Geneva
I got a Russian visa that would get me into Crimea (and
It took close to a week (with some stops around Volgograd aka Stalingrad) to ride trains from Moscow to Sebastopol
for which much of the Crimean War (1854–56) was fought
During my time in Balaklava’s valley of death (where the Light Brigade charged to its destruction)
I discovered that the last battle of the Crimean War was fought in Kars
which gave me yet another reason to make this journey to eastern Turkey
On the twenty-two hour train ride to Erzurum
there wasn’t much for me to do other than eat in the dining car
Thus I could catch up on emails and plan my time in Erzurum
where all I had done was reserve a room in the Grand Catalkaya Hotel
I had tried to book a car and driver in Erzurum
were well outside the city and many more were on the road to Kars (about four hours to the east)
I didn’t want to drive myself in a rental car
but I wasn’t getting a positive vibe whenever I explained in my e-mails that what interested me the most was the Köprüköy Military Memorial or the Battle of Sarıkamış
I slept surprising well in my crowded train compartment
and the fresh air combined with the sounds of the rocking train gave me about seven hours of sleep
I discovered I could mix the fruit that I was carrying with some of the prepackaged meals
which in eastern Turkey is a combination of alpine passes
Turkish State Railways announced that it was planning to open a high-speed rail link from Ankara to Sivas
which would cut the nine-hour trip down to three hours
I would see evidence of the new line—modern
straight rails cutting across the dry plains
twenty-two hour night train and spend the day in the dining car with nothing to do except look out the window and read my books
And the book that had my complete attention was J.A.R
Marriott’s The Eastern Question: An Historical Study in European Diplomacy
which was published in 1917 (as the last of the battles for Erzurum and Kars were being waged)
The book grabbed me from its first sentence
which is a quote that defines “the problem of the Near East” as “that shifting
and interwoven tangle of conflicting interest
and antagonistic faiths that is veiled under the easy name of the Eastern Question.”
I had gone looking for a book to help me understand the historical context of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine
A lot of the problem is that Russia’s western border
crisp language he made sense of many of the conflicts that I had traversed on my night trains
from Vienna to Ankara and beyond (all those Balkan and Crimean wars in the 19th and 20th centuries); and now
as I was heading toward the Verdun of eastern Turkey
the war between Russia and Ukraine felt like a variation on the fighting of 1853 and 1877
which were similar wars to see who would control the Black Sea and its environs
If you want a sampler of Marriott’s diplomatic prose
here is his description of how great power politics over Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1877-1914 broke Europe apart along the lines of its competing monarchies:
The virtual annexation of Bosnia and the Herzegovina to the Austrian Empire was Bismarck’s acknowledgement of the obligations which in 1870 he had incurred to Habsburg neutrality
But the gift bestowed upon Austria caused the first serious breach in the good relations between Berlin and St
The wire between those capitals was never actually cut so long as Bismarck controlled the German Foreign Office; but his successor found himself compelled to choose between the friendship of Austria and that of Russia
It flew in the face of Bismarck’s axiom: “The secret of politics
“Evangelization is more than just simple doctrinal and moral transmission
These are powerful words from Pope Francis.
the most important mission of the Church has always been to proclaim the Gospel to men and women.
the Church makes use of modern means of communication to do so
But even in the days when the internet had not yet been invented
the preachers of the Gospel were extremely creative.
“The Verdun Altar is a very beautiful example of how the Bible was explained and presented in the Middle Ages
Since not everyone could read and write at that time
the message was conveyed through the art.”
“The Augustinian Canons who have been living and working here since the twelfth century
especially in the many parishes around Klosterneuburg and Vienna
and then extending as far as the USA and Norway.”
The Verdun Altar in Klosterneuburg has been recounting the Gospel of Jesus Christ for over 800 years
is very familiar with the technical details.
“The enamel altar of Nicholas of Verdun is not only the largest preserved goldsmith's work of the Middle Ages
but also of both artistic and technical quality
This is an outstanding work that can hardly be matched
but 45 that actually date from the 12th century.”
Father Elias Carr has been living in Klosterneuburg for many decades now and is still fascinated by the Verdun Altar.
Father Elias notes: “What we have here is an incredible monument to Catholic biblical interpretation
which is based on the way the Bible explains itself
It's based on the idea of anti-type and type
which tells stories which we find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ and in the Church and in other aspects of God's plan.”
“So let's have a little look at some of these images before to see how it all works
His image is going to come up multiple times in here
because they needed to find somebody who could be an antitype to Jesus Christ.”
is the finding of the grapes from the two scouts in the Book of Numbers
which Jesus turns into his Precious Blood in the Eucharist.”
“The very end of the Verdun Altar is eschatological
but now six tablets that are in the two columns that refer to the last things
and then the judgment of those who have chosen not to be with God
people tend to really like this one because it has a bishop in it
or a couple of bishops and a king and a monk and all this
It's showing that the medieval Christianity valued human freedom
He wants us to be fully realized in ourselves
to be the person he already knows us to be.”
the message of this 800-year-old altar is still relevant today
We asked the priest from New York one important question: What is his favorite German word?
I mentioned recently when I was with EWTN in Europe and that is ‘Untergangstimmung.’ That
is the term that means everything's going to hell
And it's a terrible temptation that people think it's all just getting worse
And that's the one thing that we Christians can't accept
God has chosen us to be the people on this earth at this time
and we just let him surprise us with what happens when we say yes to him.”

Verdun is among the largest private producers left in South Texas
with more than 285,000 net leasehold acres and 90,000 net boe/d across the Eagle Ford Shale trend and the Giddings Field
Verdun Oil has amassed over 285,000 net acres across the Eagle Ford trend and the Giddings Field
Growing in the oil and gas business might seem a battle of inches, like slogging through the sodden trench warfare in the hills of Verdun in World War I. It seemed that way to the founders of Verdun Oil Co.
But Verdun Oil’s battleground isn’t in northern France—it’s in South Texas, where the EnCap-backed producer has fought to grow a position in the Eagle Ford and Austin Chalk plays since launching in 2015
Verdun is among the largest private producers remaining in South Texas
with more than 285,000 net leasehold acres (97% operated) and an output of 90,000 net boe/d (55% oil
But even with thousands of gross locations at its disposal
the company is going over old ground to pursue refrac opportunities
The company anticipates production rising above 100,000 net boe/d after Verdun brings online some curtailed dry gas production later this year and into 2025
Verdun holds more than 230,000 net acres in the Eagle Ford trend and another 55,000 net acres in the Giddings Field
And as public E&Ps search for future drilling runway, experts say Verdun Oil sticks out as a compelling target for acquisition by a larger Eagle Ford player
“We’ve grown very large over the last nine years,” Verdun Oil CFO Daniel Savitz said Aug
20 during the 2024 EnerCom Denver conference
This year the company expects “over $1.2 billion of operating cash flow and a capital budget of just under $500 million.”
It’s a far cry from Verdun’s humble beginnings: four guys in a room, with backgrounds coming from Hilcorp Energy, EOG Resources and ConocoPhillips
including just over 100 based in its Houston office
Baytex Energy Joins Eagle Ford Shale’s Refrac Rally
The company has identified 1,090 gross drilling locations across its portfolio based on a two- to three-rig cadence—734 in the Eagle Ford
Refracs are another big story for Verdun: The company has identified approximately 700 well candidates suitable for recompletions
“That’s an ongoing effort at our shop to evaluate existing wellbores and to see where we have the opportunity to increase production,” he said
A growing number of producers in the Eagle Ford are leaning into refracs, re-entries, recompletions and other re-do jobs to breathe new life into declining wells with modern drilling techniques
Refracs are a hot topic right now in mature shale plays such as the Eagle Ford and the Bakken
The company started developing its refrac strategy around 2018
when Verdun completed what is says was the first full linear isolation refrac performed in the Eagle Ford trend
Refracs have been a consistent part of Verdun’s development strategy since
Verdun believes recompletion projects can add net incremental reserves of 193 MMboe to its portfolio
The wells identified for recompletion projects have an average lateral length of 6,000 ft
Verdun looks for a list of criteria when evaluating refrac candidates
A key question in that process: When was this well completed
Eagle Ford horizontals completed before about 2016 tend to rely on antiquated completion techniques and liberal spacing with offset wells
we’re right at 100 refracs performed,” Savitz said
The company has gained “a lot of institutional knowledge on what works and what doesn’t work
so it’s going to be a key part of what we do doing forward.”
Where, When and How to Refrac—Weighing All the Options
shale plays to buy up the highest quality inventory—lest their competitors get their grimy hands on them
much of the dealmaking has happened in the Permian Basin
assets and mineral interests are sky high right now
leading some operators to look in lower-cost basins for incremental drilling runway
Experts say the flight from high Permian prices could cause an uptick in Eagle Ford and Bakken deals
Verdun put its own massive land position together through a series of transactions—more than 15 since inception. That includes a transformational acquisition of EP Energy’s South Texas properties completed in 2022
EnCap has sold billions of dollars’ worth of upstream investments in the Permian and the Bakken in recent years
With Verdun approaching a decade in the market
could EnCap look to sell the Eagle Ford operator

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a record $5.6 million civil penalty on oil producers XCL Resources Holdings
or engaged in illegal pre-merger coordination
which was under common management with XCL at the time of the July 2021 transaction
agreed to acquire EP in a $1.4-billion transaction that was subject to a waiting period before completion
EP almost immediately allowed XCL and Verdun to assume operational and decision-making control over significant aspects of EP’s day-to-day business operations before the transaction closed
The FTC alleged that EP coordinated prices for EP’s customers in the Eagle Ford region of Texas
"This led to a crude oil supply shortage for EP when the US market was facing significant supply shortages and multi-year highs in oil prices
resulting in Americans paying skyrocketing prices at the pump," the complaint states
The companies' gun-jumping activities lasted from July 2021 to October 2021
when they executed an amendment to the purchase agreement that allowed EP to operate independently again without XCL's or Verdun’s control
The civil penalty settlement reached with XCL
and EP provides for the largest dollar penalty ever imposed in the US for such a violation
During its investigation of the acquisition agreement
the FTC found "significant competitive concerns given that the deal
would have eliminated head-to-head competition between two of only four significant energy producers and would have harmed competition for the sale of Uinta Basin waxy crude oil to Salt Lake City refiners."
The FTC allowed the deal to go through after it reached a consent agreement with XCL
and EP in March 2022 that required the divestiture of EP’s entire business and assets in Utah

DENHAM SPRINGS — A Denham Springs man has been arrested after he was accused of participating in the Jan
is accused of four federal crimes for his participation in the raid on the Capitol
including entering and displaying disorderly conduct in a restricted building
as well as disorderly conduct and parade in a capitol building.
During his initial appearance in court on Thursday
a judge allowed Verdun to be released without posting bail after prosecutors said they did not want him to be detained.
Verdun was among about 2,000 people that raided the U.S
Capitol in support of former President Donald Trump following his defeat in the 2020 presidential election
Many of the people who raided the Capitol were attempting to occupy the building to block Congress from certifying Joe Biden's victory
Verdun was identified by federal authorities as they parsed through cell phone and social media footage
to identify the "scores of individuals inside the U.S
Capitol building without authority to be there," Verdun's federal arrest warrant signed May 16 stated
Verdun can be seen in multiple pictures on Jan
identified by a red beanie under a distinct camouflage baseball cap with an American flag bill
Verdun entered the Capitol around 2:25 p.m.
about 10 minutes after the entrance was breached by rioters
Another rioter's footage shows Verdun recording his actions.
Despite being escorted out of the Capitol through a broken window by police at 2:35 p.m.
Verdun reentered the building less than thirty minutes later after "other rioters violently breaching this fire door on the Upper West Terrace," the warrant said
He was eventually removed from the building around 3:00 p.m
Federal agents were later able to geolocate Verdun's phone number at the Capitol on Jan
Verdun told investigators "he travelled from Louisiana to Washington
to attend the former president’s rally," the warrant added
He identified himself in several pictures from the Capitol
Fresh ideas from museums around the globe in your inbox each week
The Underground Citadel of Verdun
has been reimagined as an immersive visitor experience through cutting-edge Augmented Reality (AR) and multimedia technology
This innovative project offers museum professionals a wealth of lessons on using technology to engage audiences
At the Museum XR Summit, François Roirand from Mazedia who developed the multimedia experience for the historic site shared the story behind the project
The Citadel of Verdun once housed up to 2,000 soldiers during the brutal Battle of Verdun
a year-long conflict that claimed 300,000 lives
With its empty galleries and haunting history
the site posed a challenge: how could it convey the realities of wartime life to modern visitors
Mazedia developed a multimedia experience that integrates AR glasses
This approach transformed the empty spaces into immersive narratives
making history tangible and emotionally impactful
they share in the history of the Citadel and the lives of the soldiers stationed here
thanks to projected images and special effects
and day is breaking over the Citadel of Verdun
Emile and Jean have been ordered to leave the front line and descend to the Citadel
to take part in a ceremony about which they know nothing…”
the story of a conflict which will long haunt our collective memory…
For museums interested in adopting similar technologies
this project serves as an excellent case study
Here are the key steps that brought this ambitious vision to life:
This six-year project has transformed the visitor experience at the Citadel
visitors see actors in historical costumes
and smells like coffee in the refectory to deepen the sensory immersion
Visitors are not just informed but emotionally engaged
gaining a profound understanding of the soldiers’ experiences

Every year, ARTFX students showcase their talent by creating impressive graduation short films. This year’s graduating class was no exception, with short films like Pittura
a powerful and highly ambitious short film that follows two brothers caught in the turmoil of the Great War
The Genie Awards jury recognized its excellence
awarding it the Best Student Short Film prize just a few weeks ago.The public has also responded enthusiastically: the short film has already amassed around 260,000 views on YouTube
We invite you to go behind the scenes with an exclusive interview with the team
3DVF: Verdun is an unusual graduation film
There’s a clear intent to develop the narrative
creating a film that is at times deeply intimate
despite the fact that it takes place during the Great War
It’s evident that you approached this as a fully realized cinematic project rather than just a showcase of your skills in the form of a demo reel or trailer. How did the project come to life
I pitched a story that remains fictional but is inspired by real events that took place in Verdun
I conducted extensive research before presenting this idea to the team
We felt a deep responsibility to preserve the memory of this historical event. We set out to create a short film in which the visual effects would serve the narrative rather than dominate it
3DVF: How did this duty of remembrance shape your research
Martin Morant: We had extensive discussions with experts on the Battle of Verdun and World War I
including guides from the Verdun Memorial and members of historical reenactment associations
These conversations were invaluable in helping us craft a story that remained as authentic as possible. We gathered numerous documents
and held multiple meetings with these specialists
Their expertise was crucial in grounding our film in historical reality
3DVF: Another striking aspect of the film—both in the short itself and in the making-of feature—is the scale of the production
and even a trench that was dug specifically for the shoot
Maxime Lu Cong Sang: We put a tremendous amount of effort into pre-production
We wanted a strong foundation on which to build the film and integrate the visual effects
and scouted locations—especially for the memory sequences
Mathieu Bron: The battlefield set required a great deal of work: we had to remove rocks
and even rent an excavator to bring the environment to life.Historical research once again played a vital role in ensuring accuracy—down to the number of barbed wire coils
the portrayal of violence becomes a crucial question
Some directors take a restrained approach (such as Denis Do’s animated feature film Funan)
while others depict violence more directly
Mathieu Bron: The team had a unified vision regarding this
We didn’t want to downplay the brutality or create a poeticized version of war.The accounts we read and the testimonies we encountered were so harrowing that we quickly decided to depict the horrors of war as authentically as possible
Verdun is still far less graphic than films like Saving Private Ryan or All Quiet on the Western Front.Of course
we faced limitations—we didn’t have access to as many prosthetics as we would have liked
we would have pushed the realism even further to better convey the experiences described in the historical records and by the experts and guides at the Verdun Memorial.Ultimately
this is a critical question: should we depict the horrors of war or not
We chose to portray the cruelty of the conflict
3DVF: Can you tell us more about your inspirations
to what extent did you try to distance yourselves from them
Macéo Chavey: Verdun has a storyline that is quite the opposite of most classic war films
It has nothing in common with Saving Private Ryan or 1917
we did draw inspiration from certain staging techniques
particularly from 1917 and the recent German version of All Quiet on the Western Front
makes extensive use of long focal lengths to enhance the sense of a massive crowd
We borrowed this technique: the trench exit shots were filmed at 100mm
our fifty extras appear to form a much larger group
These films helped us understand how to stage a battlefield and how to film it so that the shots and events remain clear
our choice of camera angles and positioning ensures that at any given moment
the audience knows whether they are seeing the French or the German perspective
you didn’t hesitate to use 16mm film and lenses with significant chromatic aberrations
The vast majority of distortions and optical aberrations in the film are native
since we also had to extend sets digitally in post-production
we had to replicate these optical effects in the digital extensions as well
Filming on actual film stock was a real challenge
but we were eager to try it—not just for the experimentation but also because it made sense
We also opted for an ultra-wide aspect ratio: 3:10 instead of the usual 2.35:1 or 2.40:1
This wider format allowed us to fully exploit anamorphic lenses
3DVF: Another interesting choice is the highly contrasted shots
You didn’t hesitate to overexpose highlights
whereas many visual effects or animation students tend to ensure everything is clean and that no details in their work are lost on screen
we noticed a common tendency to keep everything perfectly visible
But we took a different approach: we wanted the result to be realistic and believable
and that sometimes means overexposing certain areas and using strong contrasts
It’s also worth noting that we wanted to rely as much as possible on the original footage
That meant having plenty of real-world references for set extensions
it’s because they were like that from the shoot itself—because we had planned the film that way
3DVF: What was the biggest challenge during the shoot
We had very ambitious goals and wanted to create a fully polished project
We kept in mind the importance of recruitment after school
and we were also part of ARTFX’s film section
which has since led to the creation of École 24
We really wanted to push the cinematic aspect of the project
And even though we had been prepared for this over the past two years in the film section
One major challenge was managing the budget
which was quite significant for a student film—€10,000
and even searched forests for dead tree trunks
which we cut down to create trench defenses
as Verdun won a GENIE Award at PIDS Enghien
This ceremony recognizes the best French visual effects of the past year
How does it feel to receive this recognition from the VFX industry
Mélie Morice: We are thrilled that our work has been well received and recognized
This connection with the professional world has been incredibly rewarding
we didn’t expect such a reception for the film
Given the sheer number of shots we had to complete—120 shots in total
with around 60-70 involving VFX—even the school had doubts about whether we would finish the film on time
It was a daily battle to complete everything
Martin Morant: We used Axiom
a solver that integrates as a plugin with Houdini and runs on the GPU
Axiom allowed us to generate various pyrotechnic effects
Maxime Lu Cong Sang: It’s much faster than Houdini’s default solver
which enabled us to iterate quickly and refine our approach to explosions
we still faced major challenges—like the flamethrower
so we needed a high enough resolution to avoid it looking too “CGI.” Another tricky part was when the actor is set on fire
It was challenging to make it look like he was truly engulfed in flames
We had to be creative because rotoscoping fabric is never perfect
and getting the masks to blend seamlessly was quite difficult
3DVF: The horse must have required a lot of work as well
we had to work almost hair by hair—for instance
if the grooming caused a strand of hair to go in the wrong direction
The same level of care was needed for texturing
especially since the horse appears in two key shots
We debated between using a classic iris or a more viscous-looking effect
there was the challenge of modeling the skeleton
One of the hardest aspects was finding accurate references for a deceased horse
whether online or in veterinary medicine books
3DVF: The film benefited from many partnerships and supporters
Maxime Lu Cong Sang: We really wanted to push the scale of the production beyond what is typically allowed for a student film
we aimed to supplement the budget provided by the school by securing additional partnerships
Mélie Morice: Several organizations supported us financially
such as the Société des membres de la Légion d’Honneur (Society of Members of the Legion of Honor)
and we were also able to secure funding from banks. We can’t forget our families
especially through our Ulule crowdfunding campaign. There was also a lot of volunteer support
such as extras and crew members working for free
and other forms of assistance that helped reduce costs significantly
our biggest expense was equipment—out of the total budget of €10,000–11,000
Lilian Lefait: The city of Verdun also provided us with invaluable support
which we wanted to acknowledge in the credits
but they offered us incredible assistance by granting access to certain filming locations
where the Unknown Soldier was originally chosen
They also connected us with associations and passionate historians who lent us props
3DVF: Fans of the the Nexus VI YouTube channel (which we previously interviewed about visual effects) probably noticed that one of the actors looks very familiar…
Lilian Lefait: Renaud Jesionek from Nexus VI is a good friend
After finishing my studies at the University of Metz
and became friends with Renaud Jesionek. He was more than happy to take part in the short film
which was perfect for portraying a figure of authority in the trenches
it became clear that he was a great fit for the role. The team was thrilled to have him on board
especially since we received great feedback on his performance—his intimidating presence suited the character perfectly
3DVF: What are your thoughts about your training at ARTFX
And what improvements would you like to see in the coming years
The Verdun Team: We learned an incredible amount while working on our final-year film in the fifth year
Perhaps because the internships we completed beforehand helped us better understand how the techniques taught at school apply in a real-world context
Maybe also because we enjoyed the process more compared to previous years’ exercises
It’s also worth mentioning that the school dedicates a lot of resources to supporting final-year films
Creating Verdun also pushed us beyond the school curriculum
we had to go beyond what was taught in grooming techniques
We spent a lot of time researching online tutorials
Supervisors and guest lecturers also provided valuable guidance on specific issues
It’s important to understand that learning isn’t confined to the school environment
we must be able to step back and go beyond the academic framework when necessary
depending on what we want to do after graduation
some team members really appreciated the freedom to experiment
with strong support from supervisors—despite the fact that documentation for these tools was still quite limited at the time.Similarly
we mentioned earlier that the school faculty had concerns about whether we would finish the film on time
but they still gave us a lot of creative freedom
it would be valuable to emphasize the narrative importance of our work across all exercises
it would help to place exercises within an artistic vision
Providing context in service of a greater vision—similar to what we experienced during internships or in our final year—rather than focusing solely on technical execution
This would better prepare students for the industry
3DVF: Do you have any advice for ARTFX/24 students
especially those about to start their final year project
Martin Morant: They should create something they truly enjoy and can personally connect with
This is key because believing in their project will make them fight tooth and nail to see it through—that’s the essence of creation. The team is also crucial
They will be working together for over a year
so it’s important to have good chemistry among all members. They should carefully consider the time available
and avoid chasing the most impressive-looking idea
they should prioritize efficiency and think about optimal methods to save time. They should trust themselves
they should train themselves before reaching the fifth year and be well-prepared
This greatly helps build confidence when starting their final year
ensures they develop a project that will engage the team
3DVF: What has your journey been like since graduating
Martin Morant, Macéo Chavey: We joined the MPC Paris visual effects studio last July
We were recruited directly after graduating
and we were contacted following this event
Maxime Lu Cong Sang: I worked for a month and a half at The Mill, mainly in advertising. This was partly thanks to ARTFX and the job dating event, which helped me strengthen my resume. After that, I did some freelance work, and since January, I have been working at the One of Us visual effects studio in Paris
I’m on a 6.5-month fixed-term contract (CDD)
with the possibility of renewal.I’m currently working on TV series projects
and the studio is also involved in feature films.I’d like to emphasize to future students the importance of internships during their studies
as this first contact can lead to full-time employment after graduation
Mélie Morice: I’ve been less fortunate than my classmates due to the crisis in the industry, which is partly a consequence of the Hollywood strikes and the current market situation. However, I have started a 5month internship at Neels Studio
a Paris-based visual effects and animation studio
Mathieu Bron: During my 4thyear internship, I spent three months at The Yard
working as a lighting artist. After graduating
I had the opportunity to teach environment and layout courses at ARTFX Paris for 4thyear students
as the school offered me the position. However
studio projects have been picking up again since the beginning of the year
I am currently in discussions with two studios
as the environment and lighting departments are expected to be in demand in the coming months
I should be back in a studio by the end of March
Lilian Lefait: My path has been a bit different
I didn’t plan on working in a VFX studio right after ARTFX
I had a background in sound engineering. What truly interests me is filmmaking—shooting
I’m fully pursuing the career path that truly excites me

poses for a photo prior to entering the Capitol on Jan
Federal authorities have arrested a Denham Springs man accused of taking part in the attack on the U.S
is accused of four federal crimes related to trespassing and conduct at the Capitol
The FBI identified Verdun in various pictures
showing him entering the building during the attack
according to an arrest warrant written by a special agent
District Court Judge Moxila Upadhyaya signed on May 16
investigators say the man entered through the Senate Wing of the Capitol and is seen on multiple closed-circuit security recordings
CCTV shows that Verdun turned right and followed a flood of rioters to the Capitol Crypt," the investigator wrote
adding that Verdun gained entry just minutes after rioters initially breached the building
Included in the search warrant are six photos appearing to show Verdun present during the riot
and authorities say geolocation data of the man's cellphone show he was on the property
Verdun appears to be wearing a camouflage baseball cap with a red knit cap underneath and leather jacket
which authorities say made him easy to identify when combing various recordings of the day
Verdun also appears to be standing feet from police officers in riot gear who were attempting to bar additional rioters from entering the building
appearing to record himself or his surroundings as he enters the Capitol with other rioters
Court documents show Verdun was interviewed by a federal agent on April 16 regarding his involvement in the riot
During the interview he admitted to traveling from Louisiana to former President Donald Trump's rally in Washington
"Verdun observed confrontations between rioters and officers
he proceeded to enter the Capitol," the investigator wrote
The man also identified himself in multiple photos to the federal agent who interviewed him
Verdun did not immediately respond to The Advocate's request for comment
Authorities believe "there is also probable cause" that Verdun willfully and knowingly uttered loud
threatening or abusive language and engaged in disorderly conduct to impede a session of Congress
he was released from custody without posting bail
as federal prosecutors said they do not wish for him to be detained
Verdun may not possess a firearm or other weapon as he awaits further court proceedings
He also may not travel outside of the country or to Washington
for reason other than future court proceedings
If convicted of the four counts against him
Verdun could receive up to three years in prison
He is the 10th Louisiana resident to be arrested in connection with the attack

welcomed a small delegation of auditors from the 1re Defence and Economic Security (DSE) major
The auditors were given a very warm welcome and were very interested in the various presentations they were given
in particular on the national air operations centre (CNOA)
which ensures the protection of the French in the context of air safety
the air operations planning and control centre
which plans and coordinates all air operations in France
the operational centre for military surveillance of space objects
which is responsible for permanent surveillance of outer space
where airmen study the trajectories of thousands of satellites orbiting overhead and space debris
The IHEDN warmly thanks the Air and Space Force for this remarkable opportunity for our students
