In March, Pallot, who was the expert of the Galerie Didier Aaron, faced trial for commercial fraud, along with a carpenter and restorer, Bruno Desnoues, who admitted to fabricating the forgeries. The prosecutor asked for three years of prison time, including a two-year suspended sentence for Pallot, and two years, with a one year suspended sentence, for Desnoues. Both could be banned from their trade for five years. Their verdicts are expected on 11 June. The scam was discovered when a delivery driver was arrested after his investment of more than €1m in real estate in France and Portugal was flagged by the authorities. He confessed to acting as a middleman for Desnoues, who, when pressed to explain his hidden incomes, confessed to the forgeries. Pallot was the world’s leading specialist of royal seats, and in charge of antique furniture at the Galerie Didier Aaron. He was a distinguished professor at the École du Louvre and the Sorbonne and a scholar who curators would question if they had a doubts about a royal armchair. “I was the head and Desnoues was the hands,” he told the court. Oscar also shares a close friendship with her childhood friend and attendant André, while Marie falls for visiting Swedish count von Fersen. Eventually, Oscar starts to sympathize with the peasants and becomes a key figure in the French Revolution. And, well, we know how it ends for Marie. Some of the emotional scenes almost moved me, but I had to pull up the manga and anime adaptations’ Wikipedia pages and quickly read the episode and chapter summaries to figure out what important plot points were glossed over in the most recent musical montage. The only relationship I fully bought by the movie’s end was André and Oscar’s friendship and slow-burn romance, simply because they have the most interaction beyond the musical sequences. former Bordeaux winegrower and now owner of La Bouche du Roi winery in Versailles While looking through historic regional maps Pélissié made a remarkable discovery: the vineyard he planted in 2017 matched the exact location and layout of one marked on an 18th-century map—created 230 years earlier the Île-de-France was France’s largest winegrowing region with vineyards stretching across tens of thousands of hectares viticulture in the region had virtually vanished Any hope of bringing it back was quashed by French regulations brought in during the 1950s which restricted commercial viticulture in Versailles and other parts of the country when new EU regulations lifted restrictions on vineyard planting rights—paving the way for the revival of the region’s historic vineyards Pélissié commented: “I was really moved when I realized that someone had planted vines in the exact same spot The vineyard even has the same distinctive shape—it curves like a shark’s fin that someone back then saw the same potential in this land that we do today We feel very fortunate to be part of the story of this place bringing viticulture back to the region and honoring the French tradition that came before us.” The discovery was made using the Plans d’Intendance detailed cartographic surveys commissioned under Louis XV and Louis XVI The specific map that revealed the vineyard’s past was Roi is a pioneering estate located just 30 minutes from Paris on the historic Plaine de Versailles—the former hunting grounds of the Kings of France The 27-hectare (67-acre) vineyard is farmed organically and planted with six grape varieties: Chenin Blanc which French newspaper Le Figaro called the “most remarkable” discovery of 2024 The estate takes its name from La Bouche du Roi the esteemed royal household service responsible for overseeing the King’s table—including the sommeliers and chefs who ensured the quality of food and wine served at the court of Versailles La Bouche du Roi is distributed via Bordeaux négociants (La Place de Bordeaux) its wines are exclusively imported by Maison Barrière and are available in several states They can be found in restaurants such as PerSe by Thomas Keller (New York) Two of the estate’s labels are also featured on Wine.com making them easily accessible to consumers around the country About Adrien PélissiéAdrien Pélissié is a passionate advocate for viticultural heritage he developed an early appreciation for vineyard life and winemaking traditions He later earned a degree from the prestigious Wine MBA program at KEDGE Bubbleblabber Your source for the latest in adult animation news The Rose of Versailles is a film adaptation of Riyoko Ikeda’s 1972 manga It is directed by Ai Yoshimura and written by Tomoko Konparu which is known for animating projects like Jujutsu Kaisen “Versailles,” is performed by Ayaka four people: Oscar François de Jarjayes (Caitlin Glass) the daughter of an Austrian empress who is destined to become queen France and live their respective destinies while being tossed by the tides of the era There’s usually that feeling I had where women seem to struggle to adapt to today’s times especially with how they’re treated poorly on social media it’s nothing compared to what they’ve been through in the late 18th Century especially when one is dressed and acted like a man Riyoko Ikeda’s The Rose of Versailles was a historical romance drama that showcased the daily lives of that particular woman who served as the Royal Guard’s commander While it may seem like another typical love story by some The Rose of Versailles was crucial to the shōjo medium’s transitional period Through its combination of historical elements and thematic storytelling involving politics and sexuality the manga became one of the key elements responsible for the rise of manga aimed at adolescents and young adults The Rose of Versailles was adapted into various media a 1979 live-action film directed by Jacques Demy the world of The Rose of Versailles returns with an anime film produced by MAPPA which was actually my first exposure to the source material I didn’t find much appeal to the concept given my hit-and-miss history with historical dramas the company behind the surprisingly good Zenshu I immediately became convinced to see how it would convey the presentation seen in the manga the biggest challenge that invoked my curiosity was impressing the fans and providing the quality needed to attract newcomers unfamiliar with the source material The Rose of Versailles provides plenty of moments that’ll resonate well for those following the source material including its historical elements and themes involving freedom the film explores Oscar’s coming-of-age journey as a woman raised as a man struggling to liberate herself from the traditional bonds that bind her The most notable example is Oscar assuming the role of captain of the French Guard which proved to be more challenging than anticipated when she faced mistreatment from the guards due to her gender This aligns with the traditional roles during the late 18th Century where men were seen as soldiers and rulers while women assumed the positions of supporting the men and nothing else The film’s story involves Oscar challenging those roles by assisting in the French Revolution that concluded with the fall of Bastille and the death of Marie’s royal family it’s understandable why the source material has been getting much love since its inception This refreshing perspective of the French Revolution and reflection of female empowerment inspired people to embrace who they wanted to be despite their gender and see the good in humanity As someone who hasn’t read the source material I did have concerns watching the latest adaptation The first act of The Rose of Versailles was structured like a series of historical lessons that didn’t take time to fully grow its characters including the relationship between Marie and Oscar it’s like watching the shortened version of the 1979 anime showcasing some of its memorable moments with a new coat of paint Regarding its time skips and character development the film attempted to make do with its runtime only to require viewers to watch the anime series to fully grasp their entire history once the movie decided to focus solely on Oscar the narrative went a lot smoother from there as it utilized its thought-provoking themes and presentation to craft a beautifully symbolic and poignant reflection of freedom for not just the country but also the human soul The Rose of Versailles also became an occasion where the English dub fits suitably alongside the Japanese version bringing in numerous talented actors like Caitlin Glass Caitlin Glass stands out from the bunch in terms of her genuinely compelling performance as Oscar Glass took command of the role with fierceness and humanity resulting in a sublime portrayal that felt more earned than manipulatively sappy Megan Shipman also did very well as the voice of Marie Antoinette a young queen whose lack of restraint and restrictions caused the commoners to rise against the nobles emphasizing her tragedy that began with her selfishness which was the main reason for my curiosity After watching such projects as Chainsaw Man and Zenshu I did not doubt that the studio’s ability to immerse audiences with vibrant colors and artistry would translate well with this adaptation MAPPA’s presentation shined in its beauty and emotional grasp rather than distracting viewers with its stylized metaphorical visions While a few musical sequences needlessly expanded its runtime the radiance in their artistic visions was gorgeous enough to bypass their pointless additions The animation also ensured that the CGI effects integrated perfectly with traditional animation providing a visually cohesive balance that’s pleasing to the eyes with the primary example being the masquerade ball sequence That scene alone was why I decided to keep watching the first act the film adaptation of The Rose of Versailles is a worthy depiction of the classic source material that offers more roses than tedious drama While the first act felt rushed in its episodic structure the rest of the movie easily picked up the slack with its focus on Oscar The result is a thoughtful and gorgeously striking tragedy that honors its deep thematic narrative and humane characters with grace and dignity the film provided a virtuous experience fit for the source material’s fans it serves as a welcoming introduction to the popular manga for newcomers hoping to jump into the world of anime I’m unsure whether this experience convinced me to watch the 1979 anime version I will say that this gorgeously sublime film adaptation didn’t make me want to execute myself Lazarus Episode 1– 👎 Big City Greens 100th Episode–👍 Common Side Effects Episode 1–👍 Lil Kev Episode 1–👍 StuGo Episode 1–👍 Every voice student in the Shepherd School had a named role, filling the stage with richly layered characters from Beaumarchais’ comedies and the haunting court of Louis XVI. Backed by the Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra conducted by Rice alumnus Benjamin Manis revolution, and romance with style and emotional depth Corigliano and Adamo told the story of the opera’s creation “Ghosts” marked the Metropolitan Opera’s first commission in three decades when it premiered in 1991 and it remains one of Corigliano’s most lauded theatrical creations Corigliano and The Met decided to present a large scale comedy something of a rarity in the operatic canon But the opera didn’t begin with revolutionary ambition “When the opera was conceived, it was only going to be an extension of the famous Beaumarchais plays which were used for the operas ‘The Barber of Seville’ and ‘The Marriage of Figaro,’” said Joshua Winograde the Shepherd School’s director of opera studies “John decided to use those iconic characters — Figaro the Count and the Countess — and tell a new kind of story with them.” said he wasn’t content to be bound by the artistic constraints of the 18th century characters or musical conventions whom John credits as an equal co-creator of this work to write the libretto using some kind of dramatic device that would allow the story to exist in more than one time period which in turn would allow John to compose music that sounded like it was coming from multiple dimensions of history,” Winograde said “The two possibilities for this dramatic convention were that this 18th century story unfolded either in modern characters’ dreams or as witnessed by ghosts” What emerged was a story told through the eyes of ghosts — most notably Marie Antoinette — who witness and influence the unfolding drama from the afterlife That shift transformed the opera from a period piece into a timeless meditation on love Marie Antoinette is the lead role –- along with Beaumarchais himself — and it’s all about her watching and reliving her final days at the Palace of Versailles,” Winograde said “The idea that this opera originally didn’t even include her as a character is inconceivable to us when we see the show now Learn more about the Shepherd School here 713-348-0000 | Privacy Policy | Campus Carry I guess there are a lot of reviews on the way because Ford and I just planned a very last minute trip to a hotel we’ve been wanting to check out for quite some time Let me first talk about why we’re taking this trip and then I’ll discuss the itinerary I booked (which was designed to maximize new flight experiences Airelles is probably my favorite boutique luxury hotel group in the world right now but the hotels really offer an incredible experience Airelles is what Aman used to be in terms of quality and guest experience though with a bit less geographic diversity (since all of the brand’s properties are in France) the 14-key property located on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles Everything about this concept looks incredible — the design of the property the after hours access to the Palace of Versailles It almost seems like a hybrid between the typical Airelles experience and some sort of (hopefully) non-cheesy performative event even being able to find availability at the property was a challenge given its popularity and limited room count the weather forecast for Paris looked nice (well the entry level room was available for booking and we also had time to get away for a few days I’m hoping it lives up to expectations all four of the first class seats were available as I’ll be returning home a day later in order to make this Vienna detour… For the return portion of the trip, I have a night in Vienna. During my last stopover in Vienna, I spent a night at the Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere I haven’t reviewed any property in the city in a very long time I stayed at Hotel Imperial back in 2013, and I stayed at the Park Hyatt Vienna in 2015 it has been so long that I’m just as happy to revisit either as to try something new We planned a very last minute trip to Europe where we’ll be flying Air France’s 777 first class we’ll be staying at Airelles Versailles the last property of the group that we haven’t checked out so expect some initial impressions in the coming days Then I’m going to publish my full Hong Kong trip report and then I’ll publish the full trip report from this journey And please let me know if y’all have any preferences as to which Vienna property you’d like to see a review of Also stayed at the Intercontinental down the street I would be very interested in reading your review (I am based in Vienna) since it is closing in a few days (GM is also leaving and not returning) The hotel situation in Vienna is not that great I have not been a fan of the new catering on AUA.. I have not been a fan of the new catering on AUA flights so will indeed be very interesting to read your review the Austrian coffee menu that you loved in past reviews is only available directly after the main course Make sure to review the Vienna Lounge on departure (assuming your flight leaves from the D gates) it is just before passport control and pretty great The Austrian Lounge at the D gates however is tiny and nothing special Last time I was in Vienna we stayed at the SO/Vienna and loved it The building and the interior spaces were designed together by Jean Nouvel and so it's a uniquely immersive architectural/design experience - one of the most memorable hotels I've stayed in in a while the cocktail bar and breakfast buffet restaurant are at the top of one of the highest buildings in town And then to boot you're one block away from the Metro and tram stops at Schwedenplatz I think there are a core set of airlines that you focus on There are many more airlines around the world and I hope that you could also try them out and report on them I'm also getting a bit tired and yawning by the increasingly narcissitic and boring tone of this blog and the reviews of non points hotels that no one can afford… An “off the beaten path” fun one could be the Hotel Grand Ferdinand has a great restaurant (Meissl & Schaden) for schnitzel A fun quirk is that the hotel also offers very reasonably priced bunk bed “dorm rooms” for 50 euros a night via Airbnb for budget travelers A review of the hotel Sacher would be interesting I recommend that you do the tour of the Versailles Library; that was the one "extra" thing that we did there and it was amazing if you appreciate history Can't wait to read the review of the hotel in Versailles Have really enjoyed your reviews of their other hotels I'd also love to see a review of the Rosewood in Vienna @lucky Wow will you be spending just one night in Versailles Consider the Ritz Carlton - really enjoyed a one night stay there last year Would be a nice trip to tell brainwashed E39 what SkyTeam actually is What ended up happening with the Park Hyatt potentially leaving the brand or being sold I really wish we'd see more in the US (I know the backstory They are currently seeking a new owner but management within Hyatt is ongoing In fact a new GM took over the property in The contract with Hyatt is for another 10 years so whenever a new owner is announced there is no immediate threat to it leaving Hyatt My hungry self thinking you were talking about Miami’s Versailles at first Just took my first ever La Première flight a few days ago that Air France does not serve alcohol on the ground even in F Apparently same thing out of JFK these days One positive development is I was served a full tin of proper sturgeon caviar In the past AF only did caviar out of CDG and had paddlefish roe out of the US Park Hyatt would be nice to see reviewed again But here's one I haven't seen mentioned yet: Hotel Sacher Wien Really looking forward to the OS 787 review I see this has been mentioned by someone below Sacher would be a good one if you're trying something new but still very upscale The Hotel Bristol will be closed beginning in March for the next 2.5 years for major renovations It’s my favorite hotel in Vienna so would recommend trying it in the future Any Hyatt property in Vienna would be my vote I like the pace of the review trips compared to last year Also a good idea to fly on Austrian after what will be a disappointing first class experience as AF is in Skyteam I’d personally like to see you review Hotel Imperial or Hotel Bristol but embassador does unlock some of the benefits and I think it would be a good experience to report on You could check out the Linder options in Vienna this is a very luxurious trip which he does NOT want to spoil with a very average/below average hotel stay How will Europe’s best first-class product hold up against EK and JAL Enjoy the first-class redemption while it lasts as I can’t imagine AF’s new F will allow any redemptions and it’s far and away my favourite LH Group airline We stayed at the Rosewood Vienna last summer I stayed at the Amauris Hotel in Vienna-it was very nice If someone would scratch on my door there like in the video id kick his/her ass out Buses depart every hour or more from the airport Looking forward to the coffee concoctions on Austrian as their coffee menu looks mega While the seat and screen itself is a great improvement over the aging 767 product it is still nothing earth shattering within the industry as a whole These new 787's seem to have been slotted for someone else There is nothing 'Austrian" about the interiors like the 767 had I am working in Vienna each month now and can tell you that the Park Hyatt is still the best Rosewood is nice and the restaurant is fantastic but for plentiful upgrades and overall ease the PH still shines even amidst the ownership issues they are having the Priority Pass lounge that once was accessible is no longer the amazing Vienna lounge is accessible when departing from Terminal 1 I could not find it once I got through passport control and was told the Austrian lounge is all that's in the D area It must be prior to passport control and that was the issue I am always going out of Terminal 3 so was a bit lost yesterday I took the VIE-IAD flight last month and it was very meh The crew kept the cabin so hot that I was sweating and they don’t have individual air nozzles at the seats so it was a long 10-hour ride Lounge situation at VIE was shockingly bad I'm really looking forward to the Airelles review My go to hotel in Vienna is the Hotel am Konzerthaus Skip the points hotel and check out the Rosewood Vienna definitely a hundred times nicer than at Rosewood Munich This blog was supposed to be about points… he’s already now only mostly reviewing non points ultra expensive properties Can fly from Indonesia to Australia 6x return in business for the same price as one return flight on Air France first class Can someone explain why more airlines don’t use curtains like Air France Would seem like an easy win for Qantas or Lufthansa first class No big investment needed and instant privacy I have a few clients who don't like La Premier specifically because of the curtains The reason being that they block the overhead bin access so if they are flying solo and have their bags up there they can't access them if needed without an awkward interaction There are only overhead bins above the window seats in La Premiere The storage at the seats and under the ottomans is not large enough for a carry-on bag Something tells me you won’t be staying in their entry level room… Flying all the way to Versailles for a tiny room in a great hotel My first thought when reading this article was 'Is Versailles in Austria?!' The Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama alumnus (BFA 1968; HD 2015) known for his hit musicals “Godspell,” “Pippin” and “Wicked,” has teamed up again with Broadway legend Kristin Chenoweth on a brand-new musical “The Queen of Versailles,” which had its pre-Broadway premiere in Boston last summer Based on Lauren Greenfield’s 2012 documentary of the same name the musical tells the story of Florida billionaires Jackie and David Siegel and their quest to build a $100 million palace just before the 2008 financial crisis Schwartz has remained a supporter and champion of CMU students and alumni He has often returned to the School of Drama to lead master classes in music theater and auditioning he was the featured composer for the school’s annual cabaret which is a culminating performance for juniors taking “The Art of Cabaret” — a class created and developed by longtime and recently retired professor Gary Kline in honor and celebration of Kline’s retirement (The two long-time friends even performed “For Good,” the final song from “Wicked.”) Bakun was a junior that year and performed in the cabaret As a self-described “Wicked Nerd,” it was somewhat of a dream come true for her to get to work with Schwartz “Obviously I’m a huge fan of his music,” she said “You can’t be in American musical theater these days without being a fan of Stephen Schwartz.” She performed “Defying Gravity” for the cabaret and admitted that she had a bit of a mental battle with herself over the choice It is technically complex as a vocal piece on top of the enormous weight of singing such an iconic song for the man who wrote it "It was such a lesson in perseverance and specificity and everything they teach us here at CMU It was just using all those skills at the end of the day." "I’m very grateful Gary pushed me to do it because the domino effect of that choice has been so great," Bakun said with a laugh It’s what led her to the company of “The Queen of Versailles.” She recalls the email that Schwartz sent her in the weeks following the cabaret: “If you don’t have anything to do with your summer we would love to have you audition for ‘The Queen of Versailles,’ but no worries if you already have plans.” Her “Wicked”-loving self was about to join the company of the newest Stephen Schwartz musical and two of her castmates would be two of “Wicked”’s most iconic Glindas a CMU alumna who has played Glinda on tour and on Broadway and is now the face of the role in all of “Wicked”’s commercials seen on billboards in Times Square and marketing around the country Cooper had a very similar experience with Schwartz when she was a student at Carnegie Mellon where he worked with students on their songs Cooper sang “Popular” from “Wicked.” “When I had the opportunity to sing for Stephen it was a life-changing experience,” she recalled I think you might play Glinda one day.’ And that was an absolutely world-shifting moment.” Cooper was playing Glinda on the first national tour of “Wicked.” She returned four years later for the second national tour she made her Broadway debut as Glinda and has become one of the show’s longest running actors to ever play the role Cooper attributes much of her career success to that fateful master class as a student at CMU believing in me and giving young me a shot and I am so grateful." Contact Ford ([email protected]) for more details and may even be able to help if you already have a stay booked During our royal visit to Versailles, we spent two nights at the 14-key Airelles Chateau de Versailles, Le Grand Controle Staying at this hotel was our main motivation for taking this trip There was only one Airelles property we hadn’t yet visited Airelles Chateau de Versailles is unlike any hotel I’ve stayed at before The biggest selling point of this property is that it gives you special access to the Palace of Versailles even at times when it’s closed to the public (you get a morning and evening visit) this property is astonishingly good in every way and so much effort put into transporting you back in time This isn’t your typical luxury hotel experience — I’d say it’s a hybrid between a luxury hotel when’s the last time your wake up call consisted of someone scratching on your door and serving you an orange-infused almond milk drink The whole thing was every bit as cool as it was awkward (note: this wake up is optional) Airelles Chateau de Versailles isn’t cheap — quite to the contrary it’s really expensive — but you really feel like you’re getting your money’s worth This is very differently than dropping a couple grand a night on a base room at a luxury resort factory Airelles Chateau de Versailles has 14 rooms even finding availability for one of the lower room categories can be challenging given the amount of demand for this property and fortunately the base category (which is a deluxe room) was available to book This is the absolute lowest rate that you’ll ever find at the property All stays here include a variety of perks: The only difference is that you get the Royal Feast dinner included (with non-alcoholic drinks) That ordinarily retails for €300 per person and it’s definitely part of the experience of staying here So it’s a no-brainer to book the Royal Stay package for a one night stay though note that in place of the Royal Feast since you may not want to have the massive Royal Feast twice I should also mention that stays at the property come with a 15% destination fee Usually rates in Europe are all-in (or close to all-in) but that destination fee obviously reflects the incredibly special access you get For those not familiar with Versailles in general it’s a city around 10 miles west of Paris It’s a charming city in and of itself it’s commonly known for the Palace of Versailles though you can expect it’ll take a little over an hour from Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) while it’s maybe 30 minutes or so to Paris Airelles Chateau de Versailles is located directly on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles It’s the only hotel with such a location and the only hotel to offer such special access to the grounds I wouldn’t say I’m the world’s biggest history buff but even I more than appreciated just how special it is to stay on the grounds of such a storied place and getting to see the Palace without the crowds For those curious about the property’s history The story is that the Palace of Versailles was looking for a hotel partner and Airelles was chosen (I don’t think they could have picked a better partner) The actual building that the hotel is housed in dates back to 1681 as it was built by Louis XIV’s architect It was once home to the Palace’s Finance Controller hence the “Le Grand Controle” name but Airelles reportedly spent €55 million to make it what it is today That’s not just in terms of the “bones” of the building and converting it into a hotel but also in terms of trying to recreate the past as much as possible Some of the furniture in the building is even original and was sourced from auctions and antique shops We arrived at Airelles Chateau de Versailles in the early afternoon That’s not only the case based on the hotel’s physical appearance but also based on the uniforms the staff are wearing almost exactly what you’d expect for a property like this the effort put into paying tribute to the property’s history is next level I’d say this place is haunted (and maybe it is but if there’s a place where I’m fine with being abducted by ghosts then an Airelles is a pretty good place for that to happen) I was immediately reminded that we were at an Airelles property Airelles is owned by French entrepreneur Stephane Courbit and I swear you can’t walk more than a few feet at an Airelles property without having a plate of macarons staring at you Our check-in process was friendly and efficient as we were taken care of by the lovely Quentin At that point we were escorted up to our room Our room could be accessed either via the adorable elevator all rooms at the Airelles Chateau de Versailles are named we received a one category upgrade to the Baron de Staël-Holstein room especially when you consider it’s just one level up from the entry room category The room featured an entryway with the bathroom to the left The first thing I noticed about the room was the hot air balloon theme Pauline explained the inspiration for that The wallpaper is an ode to the fact that the first hot air balloon ride in history happened in Versailles This is the only room to have such wallpaper which really shows you how much thought is put into this property The room boasted a very comfortable king size bed and there’s a “technology box,” with an iPad and phone hidden from sight The bathroom was then back near the entrance and down the hall There was also a box with virtually any bathroom amenity you could think of Our room had a view of the surrounding area with views of parts of the Palace of Versailles in one direction This isn’t one of those free minibars with just a few crappy items there’s a massive selection of snacks and drinks you’ll see the Château d’Estoublon wine consistently offered and that’s because Airelles’ owner also has a stake in that winery Airelles is incredibly generous when it comes to welcome gifts waiting in our room on arrival were some macarons (which aren’t exactly in short supply at Airelles properties) Airelles properties offer nightly gifts with turndown service that included eyeshades and a jewelry box of sorts plus a towel (or something?) with our dog’s name on it Airelles Chateau de Versailles has a gorgeous wellness area that already sets the tone for what you can expect… For one, the hotel has a spa in partnership with Valmont. I didn’t get any treatments, but you can find all the details here I don’t even know how to describe this place I… I… I’ve never seen a pool like this before This might just be the coolest and most unusual decor I’ve ever seen for a hotel’s pool It’s serving haunted house funeral home realness The wellness area also has a sauna and steam room which can be accessed by guests 24/7 (it’s locked over certain hours and basically consists of three(ish) small rooms that are connected The entire culinary concept at Airelles Chateau de Versailles was designed in partnership with Alain Ducasse Let’s briefly talk about the physical spaces that are used and then we’ll look at the actual food and drinks that are served There’s also a large outdoor terrace area While we lucked out with gorgeous February weather it was still a bit too cold to eat or drink outside but I’m sure this would be a really nice place to pass time in summer The hotel then has the Grand Cabinet and Arrière-Cabinet It’s simultaneously a grand yet intimate space the hotel has a large room one level up from the lobby Service at the property is highly customized so I’m sure you could also enjoy a meal up here All stays at Airelles Chateau de Versailles include breakfast and it’s served daily from 7AM until 10AM and I think that’s a fair description with everything from espresso-based beverages Then a huge selection of items are placed onto the table Then there’s a menu you can order off of All stays at Airelles Chateau de Versailles include afternoon tea which is served daily from 3:30PM until 4:30PM This includes a menu where you can select hot drinks of choice It’s worth emphasizing that a lot of effort is put into trying to come up with dishes inspired from hundreds of years ago so some of the flavors are different than we might be used to Below was our selection the first day… And here’s the selection from the second day… The signature dining experience at Airelles Chateau de Versailles it the Royal Feast This is somewhere between a Michelin starred dining experience and one of those Medieval Times dinner shows I’d go to as a field trip in middle school Each person essentially “role plays” a certain character The menu is even dated as if you’re dining on the same day of the year in 1784 The idea behind the menu is to reinvent royal recipes with a modern twist and I think they did a heck of a job with that I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves with the room dimly light (primarily using candles) and quite the “performance” from the restaurant staff I can’t say enough good things about the staff here That’s true of everything from the front office staff and try to do everything they can to make the stay special What made this stay extra special is that only a total of four rooms were occupied the attention to detail was just breathtakingly good it already has a monogrammed Airelles luggage tag on it on our last morning we went to the gym early which required having one of the staff unlock the gym there was a tray with some little power bars I tend to think that our impressions of hospitality happen at the margins Everyone at the property was just immensely professional a special shout out to Quentin and Pauline The other aspect of service that’s worth mentioning is that staff aren’t just there to provide the service you’d expect at a top luxury hotel but they’re also doing some historic role playing but what other hotel offers a wake up service where they scratch at your door address you as “king,” and seerve you a drink in bed Arguably the single biggest selling point of staying at Airelles Chateau de Versailles is the special access that it gets you to the Palace of Versailles before facilities are open to the public (the hotel drives you to the specific places the tours take place) Typically if you visit the Palace of Versailles you’re going to feel a bit like you’re at an amusement park If you want to arrange a private tour outside of normal hours but at a cost that’s more than what you’d pay for a stay at the hotel (at least that’s what Google searches suggest) But that’s the beauty of this property The tour guides we had for all of our visits were incredibly knowledgable and passionate Having the iconic Hall of Mirrors all to yourself But of course there was a lot more to the Palace than that… Not only was it nice to talk to the guides our fellow guests at the hotel were super interesting as well It’s not your typical Paris Fashion Week and Saint-Tropez in summer crowd (not that there’s anything wrong with that) which was a refreshing change of pace for a luxury hotel In addition to special access to some buildings you can also access the Gardens of Versailles before they open to the public The hotel even has a fleet of golf carts that guests can use how cool to just be able to grab a golf cart and get going Airelles Chateau de Versailles is an unbelievably good hotel and it gives you unparalleled access to one of the world’s most famous you’ll of course appreciate this property But even if you’re not necessarily that big into history staying here will give you a new appreciation for the Palace of Versailles and the era where it had such an important role Of course this hotel is flippin’ expensive in terms of providing an unforgettable and personalized experience and this stay really cemented in my mind what a well-rounded hotel brand Airelles is What’s your take on Airelles Chateau de Versailles Thank you for writing an extensive review on this hotel It has been on my radar for several years now I feel I just really need to check it off my to do list next time I’m in Paris I had no idea this hotel brand is owned by the same owner as Laduree No wonder color schemes of Airelles properties is similar to Laduree boutiques €55 million on renovation and they ended up with those bathroom counters and shower fixtures One suggestions for future reviews: You frequently get upgraded to a higher room category I would like to at least see some photos of the standard (booked) room as that may very well be what I—or any other guest—end up with It is difficult to make a price–value judgement when you see the price of.. It is difficult to make a price–value judgement when you see the price of a standard room but see the experience of an upgraded one I came here to ask about the standard room - how does it compare @Ben you said that the room you got was a very good size especially as it was only one level up from the standard which begged the question of what the standard room is like when Virtuoso is an option I recognize that we can contact Ford for such a booking but a lot of your upgrades are through status.. but a lot of your upgrades are through status rather than a program such as Virtuoso and thus not something that many of your readers can access The upgrade we received here was the standard upgrade that anyone would receive through Virtuoso I really love your passion for travel and all the airline and hotel products you review for us (and likely to satisfy your own interest and curiosity If it wasn’t for the included privileged access to Versailles I’m not persuaded the gordy room or the dinner would have justified the price tag otherwise but maybe the images of the meal didn’t quite do it justice Fascinating glimpse into how the overly well heeled spend their money tho At least now when you say first or business class good is good apart from the pitivier for dinner (an incredibly difficult dish to pull off) and indeniably I do not see anything that can remotely justify 2'200 EUR per night for the sake of the hospitality industry ex-US how much do you think this hotel should cost and what hotel do you think justifies a 2,200 EUR price tag I know several people from the industry and the real issue are the ownership of these hotels which have way too many layers and thus have invested banking on luxury travel This hotel would have easily cost half before the pandemic and the EU inflation has nothing to do with these increases It is a fact that due to the increase of M2 money supply in the US of 40% alone in 2021 many establishments in the hospitality industry like this one are simply banking on these aspirational trips even the most refined and culturally attuned would pay 2'200 EUR per single night for what this hotel charges I am STRONGLY against them as much as I hate the whole "before taxes and fees" prices display of hotels in many countries Then if I choose to go to a Versailles alone with my partner I am willing to even pay 5'000 EUR or more but that is my choice and not something "baked" into the price that just justifies in future to keep a normal room price and just add "fees" @ Matrix.SG -- I totally agree that luxury rates have gone through the roof since the start of the pandemic and just about all luxury goods used to be a lot less expensive But ultimately there's not much value in comparing pre-pandemic rates to post-pandemic rates The question now is how the value of this compares to other post-pandemic values Admittedly my impression is based only on Ben’s reviews of Airelles properties but to me this seems to be the brand that gets luxury right in the sense that it’s a luxurious experience to stay there Most luxury brands seem just to label themselves so in order to justify charging a higher rate without delivering much of a luxury experience besides exclusivity (I am looking at you Bulgari) I don’t need cosplay as part of my hotel experience I’m surprised you didn’t mention or compare the stay at all to the Waldorf Astoria Versailles the other luxury property right on the grounds of Versailles This is especially surprising since you’ve actually written a lot about the momentum of the Waldorf brand and how much Hilton is expanding its luxury hotel collection - not to mention this blog is supposed to be about hotels accessible by points rather than absurdly-priced hotels - and it’s.. This is especially surprising since you’ve actually written a lot about the momentum of the Waldorf brand and how much Hilton is expanding its luxury hotel collection - not to mention this blog is supposed to be about hotels accessible by points rather than absurdly-priced hotels - and it’s the most premium hotel brand for Hilton in the greater Paris area it’s really disappointing that you didn’t stay at Waldorf Versailles for at least one night to compare It’s 100 times less useful to your readers for you to review such a tiny hotel with 2000 euro a night rates not accessible via points than the Waldorf Yes it’s your blog and you can write whatever you want but your readers have the right to give you feedback I’ll offer that I think yours is utterly ridiculous If you want to give feedback and make a suggestion about other hotels might want to review have the decency and respect to do it constructively rather than lashing out at Ben for daring to write an interesting review of an interesting hotel How anyone can muster the energy to have such anger and vitriol about a hotel review is beyond.. How anyone can muster the energy to have such anger and vitriol about a hotel review is beyond me How anyone can muster the energy to have such anger and vitriol about a hotel review is.. are you sure you are replying to the correct person but unfortunately I can’t seem to remove this one you note the King in the history of the hotel as Louis VIX and I think you meant Louis XIV :) I wonder if Alain Ducasse has a brand standard font because the restaurant menu here uses the same font as the Air France La Premiere Lounge CDG That capital A that looks like a backwards D If you had to pick one to splurge on: Aman (not any of the new city locations talking old school out of the way destination) or Airelle It's a hefty price point but compared to some U.S this certainly seems to be at a different level of service I especially like that a number of things are included - it really irks me when expensive hotels feel they can nickel and dime you for every little thing The French are just so good at elevated experiences In the South of France last week and had the pleasure of experiencing those elevated experiences while I think Americans make up a large percentage of the guests I think it just reflects that only three other rooms were occupied That would work for me anyway since my parents are French and it means they'd probably have a private guide for the visits in the absence of other French speaking folks :) but I hate attic rooms with those claustrophobic slanted ceilings The top floor was always the servants quarters back then Between the sharply pitched ceilings and the impossibly busy balloon motif that seems to adorn every single surface in the room I frequently bemoan the lifeless "international beige" styling of new luxury hotels but sometimes "traditional elegance" is just too OTT to be endured @ Beachfan -- I hear you about the slanted ceilings the ceilings in the room were otherwise *really* high so I didn't get the same feeling I'd usually get with such a setup Was there an extra charge for the "French revolution experience" so you could really feel like a royal I like that you went all in with this comment The first time we visited the palace was a cold and there was a tiny number of other tourists primarily motived by checking out a hotel that has long been on our radar there will be reviews of a few pretty awesome luxury hotels In this post I’ll outline all the basics of the trip and then I’ll publish the entire trip report series in the coming days and weeks Ford hadn’t been anywhere in a few months and we had a free weekend around Valentine’s Day with everything going pretty smoothly at home So we figured we might as well take advantage of that opportunity This trip was largely about visiting a hotel that we’ve been wanting to stay at for a long time. Airelles is probably my favorite boutique luxury hotel group in the world right now all the stars aligned — the hotel had entry level room availability (the property is often sold out for anything but the top suites) and I found some good award options in both directions which would allow me to try some airline products that have been on my list this was one of the more straightforward trips I’ve taken in some time I booked this itinerary as three separate tickets While Ford and I flew the outbound together to review some products that have been on my list (Ford flew back to Miami nonstop on American and I even managed to find saver award availability) and award pricing is steeper than with just about any other program I booked the following for the per person cost of 236,000 Flying Blue miles plus $302.10 in taxes & fees (as you can see, this included a stopover in Paris, and my connection to Vienna in Air France’s Airbus A220-300 business class): 2/15 AF99 Miami to Paris departing 7:50PM arriving 10:45AM (+1 day)2/19 AF1738 Paris to Vienna departing 3:30PM arriving 5:25PM Next up, I flew Austrian’s Boeing 787-9 business class from Vienna to Washington Dulles I booked the following for 70,000 Air Canada Aeroplan points plus $115.17 in taxes & fees: 2/20 OS93 Vienna to Washington departing 10:35AM arriving 2:35PM Lastly, I flew United’s Boeing 737 MAX 8 first class from Washington to Miami Somehow I hadn’t yet flown a United jet with the carrier’s new narrow body interiors so I was looking forward to checking that out There was no saver level award availability but I booked the following in first class for $399.86: 2/20 UA1706 Washington to Miami departing 5:30PM arriving 8:26PM There won’t be many lounge reviews with this trip report series, with one exception. I’ll be reviewing the Air France La Premiere first class arrivals lounge in Paris During this trip, I stayed at three different hotels, so let’s go in chronological order. As mentioned above, our primary destination with this trip was Airelles Château de Versailles It’s somewhere between a traditional luxury hotel you get unparalleled access to the grounds of Versailles But you also get woken up by having someone scratch on your door address you as “king,” and then draw your curtains and make you a bath So that’s kind of fun… or something This time around, we decided to check out the Bulgari Paris (or BVLGARI Paris, if you prefer). While not a French “Palace” hotel Lastly, I had one night in Vienna on my own, on the return. I decided to stay at the Park Hyatt Vienna since I hadn’t reviewed that in many years and was wondering how it’s holding up to visit a hotel we’ve been wanting to stay at for a long time and I did my best to incorporate some interesting flight reviews my next series will be about our recent trip to Japan In the absence of consistently executed brand standards "Ford hadn’t been anywhere in a few months"...poor Ford There's no need to stay if the travel posts make you feel somehow inferior A person goes to Versailles for a historical experience The room decor is consistent with that of the early Belle Epoque era While distinct from the Baroque exhibited in the Palace it expresses a later period of French grandeur The Choice hotels would probably have more agreeable decor than the late-term abortion in the photo "I even managed to find saver award availability" Well yeah… but they’re not always available luxury properties in high-demand destinations While Bulgari is managed by Marriott and bookable through Marriott it isn't a Marriott brand in the sense that it's part of Bonvoy I've seen some disappointing reviews of Bulgari properties in London and Dubai Walk With Tim on YouTube's experience led me to conclude that Marriott is capable of managing very nice 4-star and average 5-star hotels the company struggles to manage the highest caliber of.. the company struggles to manage the highest caliber of luxury hotels I stayed at the Tokyo property and was skeptical going into it (I had been to the Milan one and it wasn't for me) Tokyo was one of the best hotel stays I have ever had and their team was spectacular to work with The London property is an expensive hotel but it is not a luxury hotel To all those who are going to question the curtains/bath/etc this is optional and they ask your preference address you as “king,” and then draw your curtains and make you a bath You used to be a respected incarnation of Harvey Specter in real life Then you capitulated to an administration with demonstrably no respect for the principles of jurisprudence Every associate at every respectable law firm in the United States is disgusted with this state of affairs and the lack of backbone I may have had no choice but to capitulate as well But I am saying if I were in that position I would be booking Air France First Class straight away and waking up with a lantern and music the very next morning I had a feeling today was a rough day for you Sidenote: great times smoking weed with some local kids and getting high as f**k on the grounds of Versailles Spring Break in 1995 Picture of UA 737 Max looks like old interior in F Last weekend flew DCA-ORD (321Neo - yes a mostly empty 321N) and then ORD-DFW (320) Both had new interiors with the F seating having a shell around the back Plus there is a curved partition between the seats The spacing is wider on the 321N which allows for a built in wireless charging pad between the armrest and divider Last weekend flew DCA-ORD (321Neo - yes a mostly empty 321N) and then ORD-DFW (320) Both had new interiors with the F seating having a shell around the back The spacing is wider on the 321N which allows for a built in wireless charging pad between the armrest and divider The 320 the armrest is next to the divider The 321N also has a divider between the seat backs Both had new Displays with Bluetooth for headsheet United is installing Starlink wifi throughout its fleet so there won't be a need for live TV through the seatback IFE You will be able to stream whatever you want straight from your device using the free wifi Unless you don't want to hold or prop up a device "Ford hadn’t been anywhere in a few months"...poor Ford Unless you don't want to hold or prop up a device
