where lines 14 and 15 of the new Grand Paris Express intersect
is a colossal effort of civil engineering by Dominique Perrault Architecture
in what seems like another world – one where Muammar Gaddafi was still president of Libya
and architects’ expertise was taken seriously by governments – the then French president Nicolas Sarkozy announced the appointment of a think-tank to come up with ideas for the future of Paris and its hinterland
Fifteen or so years later, a whole slew of research-institute buildings has sprouted to accommodate the elite engineering and technology schools concentrated in Saclay, and the Grand Paris Express
Among the places it will serve is Saclay itself
alongside a host of other suburban destinations that never imagined being linked into what for much of its history was a strictly Parisian network.
The €36 billion operation (that’s the current estimate – chances are the figure will hit €50 billion if and when all the lines complete
sometime in the 2030s) is a transport revolution for a city that formerly forced its banlieusards into the centre if they sought to travel from suburb to suburb
and its consequences for real-estate prices and settlement patterns will surely be enormous
Scheduled to come into service next year, Line 15 will be the most heavily used of the four that are planned
since it circles through the petite couronne
Extensions to existing lines will link it to the current network, among them the expanded no
14, which since last year’s Olympics connects Saint-Denis in the north to Orly Airport in the south
On that trajectory is the southern suburb of Villejuif
where a brand-new interchange opened just this January
Named Villejuif-Gustave Roussy, the station is located in the middle of a new public plaza between the Institut Gustave Roussy – a hospital specialising in cancer treatment – and the Parc des Hautes-Bruyères. Its architect, Dominique Perrault
who in 2015 achieved ‘immortal’ status following his induction into France’s prestigious Académie des Beaux-Arts
was one of the participants in Sarkozy's 2007 think-tank.
Although it doesn’t appear so when viewed from the plaza
the new station is a colossal effort of civil engineering
expected to handle 100,000 train-changing commuters daily when Line 15 opens
Perrault boasts that his building has neither facade nor walls
a slightly exaggerated claim that nonetheless highlights the exceptional nature of this undertaking
A concept image produced by Perrault’s office
It depicts a section through the Roman Pantheon buried below ground
the oculus at the apex of its dome forming a well that descends into the underworld
while in the background we see the shadowy form of the Institut Gustave Roussy
Actually rather bigger than the Pantheon (whose height and diameter are both 43.3m)
the station at Villejuif takes the form of a subterranean concrete cylinder – the form that uses least material
explains Perrault – that measures 50m deep and 70m in diameter
and whose retaining walls are one metre thick.
retail outlets, the well descends to where Lines 14 and 15 cross
each traversing the space in its own rectangular-profile concrete tube
which contains platforms as well as tracks
a battery of escalators departs into the 30m-diameter central void
making for a daily commuter procession of truly Piranesian drama
Stainless steel theatrics and internal 'starshine'
The theatricality is augmented by the finishes, which in addition to raw concrete include stainless steel treated in a variety of ways: perforated (for acoustics), satin smooth, mirror-polished, and, in what has been a Perrault speciality ever since his 1995 Bibliothèque Nationale de France, woven into mesh (also good for acoustics).
When approached from the plaza, the station resembles a candidate for the Serpentine Pavilion, a one-storey structure comprising halos of metal-mesh brise-soleils suspended high on steel poles. Between the brise-soleils and the ETFE bicycle wheel, a band of metal gates and steel-and-glass retail pavilions delimits the boundaries of the station proper.
Or perhaps we should say the threshold of the local shopping centre, as that is the station’s other role, the upper part being free for all to access during operating hours, since turnstiles are not encountered until level -2. Symbol of a neighbourhood undergoing transformation, the shops are aimed at the users of the many new buildings that rose in the station’s immediate vicinity in anticipation of its inauguration.
'Priceless' infrastructure – and source of resentment
Nobody, least of all Perrault, is able to say how much this truly impressive project cost. ‘Too complicated to calculate,’ replies the architect dismissively when asked during the press visit.
Meanwhile, for Franciliens (as inhabitants of the Paris region are known), it may also prove an ambiguous symbol, for the image of thousands of workers being whooshed up from the bowels of the earth into retail heaven seems uncannily like the final scenes in Fritz Lang’s soon-to-be-centenarian Metropolis.

which is crossed and animated by walkways and escalators
the sky and people into the space that has been completed underground at a depth of about fifty metres
"The Villejuif-Gustave Roussy Station (by Dominique Perrault) aims to erase the threshold between the open public space and the closed space of the station by blurring the limits of the city
Its helicoidal architecture on the surface exerts a centripetal force on the urban fabric which draws it towards the space that has been completed underground
The large concrete cylinder with its moulded wall

Natural light pours all the way down to the platforms located some fifty meters below
This exposed infrastructure is given maximum visibility and incorporates the logic of construction
The architectural layout is part of the urban cityscape
By erasing in the ground and prolonging uses and views between the surface and the subterranean domain
it unifies the vertical dynamics of access to the transport network
The architectural treatment transfigures this infrastructure now become architecture
the architecture of this station sunken into the ground is not in opposition to the city or anything else
It frees the horizon and disappears from the urban silhouette
Gustave Roussy Station by Dominique Perrault Architect
Project description by Dominique Perrault Architecture
the Grand Paris Express is the largest project of civil engineering in Europe including over 200 km of automated lines and 68 new stations
It involves first and foremost a territorial project and the making of a new city in sync with the collective aspirations for a new urban experience
The Grand Paris Express is a major piece of this major bet of the metropolis
A new territory is taking shape before our eyes
The objective is not merely to ensure access to the capital to all inhabitants of the region but also to develop new zones of live and activity across the entire metropolitan region
The development of the districts surrounding the new stations of the Grand Paris Express is
a challenge of urbanity inherent to the territory’s programme of metropolization
defined as a circle of 800m of circumference
will represent nothing less than one and a half times the size of Paris proper and more than twenty percent of the population of the new metropolis
What are the challenges facing Grand Paris
rectifying spatial segregation and relegation of every type
encouraging social diversity without further weakening the most disadvantaged citizens
intensify the connexions between urban centres
to the emergence of the sustainable metropolis facing the challenge of climate change
A metropolitan stationLocated on the highest point of the Longboyau Plateau
in the departmental park of the Hautes Bruyères
with a depth of some 50 metres separating the street level from the one of the platforms
will be one of the deepest transport infrastructures in France
which links Pont de Sèvres with Noisy- Champs
the future Villejuif Institut Gustave-Roussy will create the interconnexion with the extended line 14 and will welcome some 100,000 passengers every day from January 2025
It will serve the ZAC Campus Grand Parc and the Institut Gustave-Roussy
the leading cancer treatment centre in Europe
An emblematic station of the Réseau du Grand Paris Express
owing as much to the role of infrastructure in developing the territory
as to the interconnexion it will ensure between two metro lines
the architecture for the future station expresses the determination of the project to place in dialogue
Extending the city undergroundThere is no formal demonstrativeness or eccentricity from the design point of view
on the surface takes the appearance of a pavilion
It structures the emergence of new territory of the Grand Paris
andcontributes to the transformation of the city into a metropolis
It involves placing the hospital centre in a network and transforming its surrounding district onto a campus
a central element of the interconnexions between the major hospital
future office and housing buildings and the large park
It will also create a link between the urban and landscape places
by extending the uses and the views between above and below
like an extension of the city below ground
Its architecture is designed in the continuity of the surrounding public space
This station must be grasped as a connector of the world below with the world above
The engineering studies were developed in a way that design of the infrastructure corresponds to the design of the station: light and readable architecture that accompanies flows as naturally as possible
Connecting the Gustave Roussy Hospital with the larger networkOn the level of the square
the forecourt leads naturally towards the first balcony overlooking the central void
Little kiosks house a range of services and punctuate the periphery of the station
Walls draped with metal mesh enable the closure of the station
These elements are a light form of limit offing view onto the city and the park
without a ticket) is possible down to level -2
The first two levels of balcony galleries house shops and services
accentuating the continuity of the station with the public space above
The project facilitates easy comprehension of the space and the circulations
users easily find their bearings and directions
From the two levels of platforms – the two metro lines being located in two perpendicularly superimposed tunnels - monumental escalators lead to the surface
An open-air stationThe station benefits from natural light and ventilation
the vast central void and the various balcony circulations are bathed in natural light and open air
This principle is what makes one of the forms of prowess of this infrastructure possible
the one of eliminating the need for smoke extractors in its central part (the well)
Travellers will also be in contact with the ambient temperature
which is more temperate at this depth than on the surface
The roof over the station is composed of three layers
A centrale transparent circular one protects from rain while allowing outside air to circulate laterally
This roof consists of a one peripheral beam on which all the tie rods and cables are linked with the central hub
Stretched over the cables are elements made of ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene)
the material chosen for its high quality of transparency
non -concentric disks placed at two different heights
they radiate over the forecourt and signal the presence of the station whilst also ensuring user protection from the sun
They are composed of strips of stainless-steel spiralled metal mesh
ResilienceResilience is a word of our times
capable of creating a system given that it predicts the future of human societies facing planet-wide climatic shock
one designates the ability of materials to resist forces of rupture and weather
By choosing concrete for the structure and glass and stainless steel for cladding
the station is anchored in the determination of solidity and durability
The overall composition is minimal and all the elements have a function
By employing natural resources available underground
the station is as delicately integrated as possible in its environment
to insulate the interior from the exterior earth and to maintain a constant temperature by using the surrounding earth
thereby eliminating the need for additional heating
The “sous-terrestre”The world underground is often synonymous with discomfort
The station being anchored in the deep whilst allowing light and air to pour in
they understand that the ground is no longer anxiety-provoking
but rather that it offers comfort and an experience engaging all the senses
The central well makes it possible to gather in the heart of this innovative facility all travellers who
are in contact with what is happening inside
By confusing the public space and the station
the project transgresses the traditional terminology of buried works to become a fully public facility
It is in this sense that the station is the extension of the city in that we encounter the same ambiance whether we are above or below
The station is no longer merely a work of transport infrastructure
but now it has become a lively place of exchange offering users
between individual pathways and the public space
an associate of the Dominique Perrault Architecture firm
The materiality of the project makes use of stainless steel in a range of textures: smooth
These finishings create different ambiances
whilst also favouring the propagation of light
composed of swaths of spiralled stainless-steel mesh
1,808 m² of silvery aluminium wire clad the great well
thus electrifying the heart of the station
metal mesh is assigned a new function: neither wall nor structure
it is used to rethink the notion of protection
introduce the play with lighting and reflection
and to clad here and there the station and its facilities
light fixtures and acoustic baffles alternate
Light from the industrial light fixtures blends with daylight and is reflected by the meatal surfaces
immersing travellers in a genuine light show

Villejuif-Gustave Roussy's architectural design sought to blur the line between public space and transport infrastructure by placing the main part of the station underground
leaving only the glass pavilion structure visible above ground
The main part of the station was located underground
leaving only the glass pavilion structure visible on the surface
the station is an open concrete cylinder with a diameter of 70 meters
which the architect called an “inverted skyscraper.” Inside it are galleries
bridges and escalators that provide easy movement between levels
One of the most important features of the station is that natural light penetrates even to the lower levels
including the platforms at a depth of 50 meters
breaking the typical image of underground infrastructure as dark
the architects sought to change the perception of the metro as a gloomy place
the design also includes natural ventilation and automatic smoke extraction
which reduces the need for complex engineering solutions for climate control
This allows you to minimize energy costs for heating and cooling
The interior of the station was created with special attention to light
which is presented in various versions: smooth
This allows for the formation of various spatial effects and supports the maximum use of natural light
The station's interior was designed with special attention to light
Villejuif-Gustave Roussy also integrates public spaces
shops and services on the first two levels
making the station not only a transport hub but also an active urban space
The Grand Paris Express is providing €35 million in funding for art installations in 68 new stations to transform the transport network into a “museum accessible to all.” Villejuif-Gustave Roussy is one of the first stations to implement this concept

Since June 24 and the extension of line 14 north and south to Orly
trains have been passing through the station
Villejuif - Gustave Roussy station is the last station on line 14 still closed
the 8th and last station on the line 14 extension will welcome its first passengers
Located four stops from the Aéroport d'Orly terminus
Villejuif - Gustave Roussy station is well worth the wait
With its circular shape, the Villejuif - Gustave Roussy station has a total of 6 entrances, spread over a 7,500 m² urban area in the hills above Villejuif in the Val-de-Marne department
two tunnel boring machines - Alisson and Amandine - were needed to enable lines 14 and 15 Sud to cross each other perpendicularly at the heart of the station shaft
Other figures: 300,000 m3 of earth - the equivalent of 120 Olympic-sized swimming pools - were excavated for this circular station
An emblematic station of the Grand Paris Express, it is also a connecting station. From summer 2026, if all goes according to plan, Villejuif - Gustave Roussy station will serve line 15 Sud
We then take one of the station's many escalators
16 elevators and 32 escalators - including 2 monumental 40m-long staircases - have been installed in this station
And the descent to the platforms of line 14 is impressive
you can see the gigantic glass dome that allows the station to be lit by natural light right down to the deepest level
Once on the platforms of line 14, we discover the beautiful illustrations by Matthias Lehmann
who drew his inspiration from the surroundings and the town of Villejuif
the Villejuif - Gustave Roussy station has been designed as a"station that connects the world below and the world below"
While a ticket will be required to access the deepest levels
the first two levels (-1 and -2) will make way in 2026 for a variety of shops - some seventeen

Villejuif Underground frontman Nathan Roche hadn’t had more than €200 in his account since 2014
And then he became a model and muse for Celine
Words: Daniel Dylan-Wray 6th December 2019
It’s like a dirty French version of Sydney,” says Nathan Roche of Marseille
the city he has called home for the last two years
Before that there was Paris and before Paris there was Sydney
Roche is someone who not only likes to bounce from city to city but also project to project
He’s currently the frontman of the Villejuif Underground
a band who merge groove and grit to create sultry garage-rock-pop
Débutante and his various credits for other bands — from Camperdown & Out to Disgusting People — stack way high
Roche has also written and self-released an eye-watering 15 novels and seven collections of poetry
“I think it totals around 30 books I’ve written,” he estimates
“But I can’t say that they are all very good.”
To top it all, Roche has also recently became a model and muse for fashion house Celine
Catching the eye of creative director Hedi Slimane
the Villejuif Underground frontman was fast-tracked to collaborate on the brand’s latest campaign
Here he talks us through his hectic and eclectic life
Are you someone who needs to be active all the time
I used to be like that when I was younger but now it’s a much more systematic and robotic approach
Writing a book or making a record isn’t a torturous thing to do — writing a book is the thing I enjoy most on earth
I’ve done it so much over the years that it’s kind of an easy and pleasurable thing to do — the only thing I need is time
What made you decide to leave Sydney and head to France by yourself
I was getting money from the government
and I was living off that and living in a place with a window overlooking Sydney Harbour
I’d wake up and go for a bike ride to different beaches and start drinking early in the afternoon
I was writing lots of books and making lots of music but I wasn’t using another section of my brain that I think could have been utilised
A part that involved learning another language or putting myself in uncomfortable and challenging situations
Your Villejuif Underground bandmates are based in Paris and you’re in Marseille
We have a song and then just do it live until we remember it
This is why some people who see us live are like
“That was pretty good but what was that song
Since 2014 I haven’t had more than €200 in my account
Then all of a sudden this Celine thing happens and they gave me a bit of money
so for the first time in a few years I was able to put out a new book and I’ve recently been putting together a new poetry book with my wife — she’s done all the design and illustration
It’s kind of a joke to have so little in your account for years and then suddenly have some
I’m not a millionaire or anything but a couple of thousand is a hell of a lot to me and that means it’s possible to do a lot of things
Were things a struggle when you only ever had €200
I’ve been on tour for the last few years and I have a very low standard of living
so it’s easy to get by without having to work all the time
I tried to quit the band so that I could become a dishwasher
and I’ve washed a lot of dishes in my life
but they often have the same people working at these places for like 10 years or something
It was easier for me to have a photoshoot with Hedi Slimane than become a dishwasher in Marseille
Being in a band are you encouraged and supported more as a result of being in France
I had no expectations of being treated this well or having drink tickets or food or a place to stay when on tour — in Australia that doesn’t exist
Débutante last year for a little tour and I had forgotten what life was like for a touring musician outside of France
and maybe you’ll get a drink ticket.” In France they don’t even blink an eye when you ask for your fortieth cocktail
There’s a system in place for musicians where if you’re playing over 40 contract gigs a year you get €1,000 a month for your service to the arts
I haven’t been able to get that but lots of my friends have it
“Since 2014 I haven’t had more than €200 in my account
Then all of a sudden this Celine thing happens…”
It sounds like you follow your instinct when it comes to going to new places and trying out new creative projects
It happened a few months ago in Morocco
I was there with my wife when this thing with Celine happened
They emailed me when I was in the middle of the Sahara desert and invited me to Paris for three days
I went to the airport and they told me my passport expires in two months and 25 days — there needs to be 3 months on it to travel
This was the beginning of a torturous six weeks of being stuck there endlessly going to the embassy and not knowing if I was going to get deported back to Australia because I didn’t have legal papers
We ran out of money and my wife had to go back and wash dishes at her family restaurant to send me money to stay there and fuel my hashish addiction
I want to do some more poetry because it takes less time than a novel and I’ve always got this 2,000 page masterpiece novel that I really want to start on but I need to quit music to do it
It’s about a time travelling poker player

Motive as yet unclear for knife attack in Villejuif that left one dead and two seriously injured
Police shot dead a man who stabbed several people in a Paris suburb in a knife attack that left one person dead and at least two others seriously injured
Armed officers were called at around 2pm on Friday after the man stabbed several people – apparently at random – near a park and busy shopping centre in Villejuif
Local mayor Vincent Jeanbrun told French television the man was shot and killed as he attempted to flee into the neighbouring suburb at L’Haÿ-les-Roses
Shoppers at a nearby commercial centre were instructed to remain inside
Video surveillance footage suggested the attacker had acted alone
but officers advised the public to keep away and sealed off the area as they searched for possible accomplices
The victim was reported to be a 56-year-old local man who was stabbed as he tried to protect his wife
attended the scene along with the Paris police chief Didier Lallement
A representative from the anti-terrorist investigations unit also attended
but French officials said it was too early to determine any motive for the attack
Their headquarters are based in Villejuif, France.

Construction work on the Gare Villejuif Institut Gustave-Roussy interchange on the Grand Paris Express has successfully completed crossover of two tunnel boring machines (TBM) and jacking of the permanent tunnel structures
Grand Paris Express project promoter Société du Grand Paris has released a timelapse video showing the crossover of the TBMs driving Line 14 and 15 within the Gare Villejuif Institut Gustave-Roussy shaft
Grand Paris Express is a group of new rapid transit lines being built in the Île-de-France region of France
The project comprises four new lines (Lines 15
plus extensions of existing lines 11 and 14
A total of 200 km of new track and 68 new stations are to be added
Construction of the shaft started in 2018 with diaphragm wall work delivered by Spie Batignolles
Shaft excavation and construction of a temporary crossover bridge allowed TBM Allison driving Line 14 South to pass through the shaft in January
Just over a month ago the second TBM – named Amandine – driving Line 15 South drove through the base of the shaft
clearing the way for a 3,500t precast concrete structure to form a permanent bridge deck has been jacked into position
Elsewhere on the Grand Paris Express project
another TBM – named Sarah – has been launched to drive the 2.6km long common section on lines 16 and 17 from the Puits du Canal site in Aubervilliers towards the Finot structure
The drive will take the tunnels 25m below the Landy railway line
which is the largest in Europe with 42 tracks and more than 1,000 train movements a day
The Line 14 North and Line 15 East on the Grand Paris Express will also pass under the Landy site
