a fuel depot of gas giant Total until dozens of police in riot gear cleared out her small group and a handful of fellow protesters from her working class town north of Paris are plotting their next blockade but we’re not army chiefs,” said Pouzet who is raising two children alone and can barely make ends meet passionately protesting against a government they say has forgotten the people while pandering to the rich The movement took off in November with blockades at strategic crossroads around the nation following a fuel tax hike that is part of President Emmanuel Macron’s plan to wean the nation off fossil fuels The movement is dubbed “yellow vests” for the fluorescent safety vests that are required by law in each car and that protesters often don The original protests may have been fairly low-key at the start following an ugly turn that has led to two violent weekends in the heart of Paris and four people dying the French state is in the midst of its most serious periods of civil unrest in decades French authorities trying to grapple with the restive citizenry have stressed the right to protest — while preparing extraordinary security measures ahead of Saturday’s demonstrations including putting armored vehicles on Paris streets said Friday that “rebellious” individuals are expected to meld into the crowds and made clear all would be done to prevent a repeat of the recent destruction and violence “Some ultra-violent people want to take part,” he said the government had withdrawn plans for the January fuel tax hike in a bid to appease restive citizens — three days before a feared fourth protest in the French capital the movement had ballooned and radicalized and demands have multiplied The concession was widely seen as too little too late Now France is bracing for more violence this weekend the Louvre museum and countless shops are to stay closed Saturday as security is tightened Pouzet has neither a car nor a driver’s license the girl who struggles every day and who fights to try to have a minimum She said she decided to stop wearing a yellow vest because the movement is no longer about cars she calls herself “an angry French woman.” She has had a steady job for 14 years caring for children at a public nursery in a nearby town She lives in a white stucco semi-detached house in a working class town north of Paris But she says she has around 200 euros (under $230) per month to feed her family and pay for surprise expenses The rest of her monthly pay check of 1,750 euros health insurance for her and her two children She took out a bank loan to pay France’s annual “habitation tax.” “telling myself listen to those around you shut your mouth and follow and grin and bear it.” the growing protest movement meant “the world was opening its eyes coming out of a lethargy” and “I saw I wasn’t alone.” Groups formed and other networks were engaged It is unclear how many people are in the movement But the speed at which actions and demands are multiplying has swept Pouzet away “This crisis is deep and it’s not just economic The phenomenon began incubating in mid-October apparently spurred on in part by a video that went viral she gives Macron a tongue-lashing for piling new taxes and restrictions on cars needed for work — while slashing a wealth tax the beleaguered Macron “detonated” the crisis starting with a gradual loss of solidarity in French society “It’s the poorest giving to the richest … We have the impression of being modern-day slaves,” she said with self-appointed spokespeople but no real leaders has created a conundrum for the government Infighting within the movement that apparently is attracting radicals on the right and left has multiplied sources of potential danger but considers it inevitable if change is to come “The French people have reached saturation point we’re waking up together so let’s go.” Milos Krivokapic contributed from Gennevilliers Stay secure and make sure you Villeneuve-la-Garenne after a second night of riots marked by suburban fires and explosions The trouble had also spread to nearby Aulnay-sous-Bois where police claimed they were "ambushed" by residents in a district of dense high-rise social housing of mainly immigrant occupants who claim they are regularly the victims of harsh police treatment Police said they were targeted by residents using fireworks as projectiles After the motorcyclist was injured on Saturday rights group SOS Racisme issued a statement calling on authorities to shed full light on the incident and urging police people allowed outside only for essential purposes and then with a self-certified letter explaining their reasons for leaving their home More than 800,000 people were written up for violations Several Centre d’Art in Aix-en-Provence are mounting a major monographic exhibition of the art of the French Impressionist Alfred Sisley The first retrospective in more than 20 years of this purest of all the major Impressionists “Alfred Sisley (1839-1899): Impressionist Master” spotlights about 50 of Sisley’s paintings which come from private collections and major museums in Europe and North America The Bruce Museum will premiere the exhibition January 21-May 21 and is the only venue in the United States where it will be on exhibit from June through October Born in Paris to well-to-do British parents Sisley at first intended to pursue a career in commerce and spent two years in London from 1857 to 1859 studying both the Old Masters and the great British landscape painters John Constable and J.M.W he was determined to become a landscape painter and enrolled in Charles Gleyre’s studio where he met the future Impressionists Claude Monet Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Frédéric Bazille Initially Sisley worked in the naturalistic landscape tradition of the Barbizon School but increasingly adopted a proto-Impressionistic style recording specific locations in a sequence of visual records of different times of the day In so doing he charted comprehensively and from multiple points of view the landscapes of his residences in the villages along the Seine west of Paris and beyond the Forest of Fontainebleau at Veneux-Nadon and Moret-sur-Loing Sisley was first and foremost a painter of light He knew how to imbue all of his paintings with it One could say that light floods his landscapes deliciously bathing even the most modest of details While his landscapes are generally modest in scale and tonally relatively restrained the magic with which he was able to capture the effects of the light dancing on water the brilliance of winter sun on snow and hoar frost the exploration of the depth of a rural scene and the vastness of the skies create compelling works akin to poetry quiet Clichy-Sous-Bois, France — Joining more than 1,000 others, Djemba Diatite stood for hours in line to feed her growing family, grateful for handouts of fruits, vegetables and soap. It was her first time accepting charity, but she had no choice. The coronavirus pandemic has turned her small world upside down. With open air markets closed, supermarket prices skyrocketing, an out-of-work husband, two children to feed and another on the way, Diatite said even tomatoes are now too expensive. “This is my only solution,” she said, relieved that a local group in her Paris suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois stepped in with help. Clichy-sous-Bois – where fiery nationwide riots started in 2005 – is just 23 14 miles northeast of the French capital, but with its rows of housing projects, restless youth and residents teetering on the poverty line, it feels light years away. The town mayor, seeing a looming crisis triggered by food shortages, sounded the alarm, and with scattered unrest simmering in impoverished suburbs, the French government announced a plan for urgent food assistance of nearly $42.1 million for communities in need. Providing food aid might be the most fixable of the longstanding problems in the heavily immigrant housing projects ringing France’s large cities. Leader after leader has tried and failed to find remedies for often-dilapidated and cramped housing, chronic delinquency, a thriving drug trade and, above all, the entrenched discrimination against minority communities that limits their job prospects in France. Some residents say they felt confined years before the strict coronavirus lockdown measures imposed March 17. “I feel the social crisis is growing with confinement,” said Clichy-Sous-Bois Mayor Olivier Klein. “We see numerous people in need, urgently, in a way we’ve never seen,” he told France Info radio. “In these tense neighborhoods, the smallest spark can trigger still more tension.” Alongside the food crisis, there has been scattered violence, with youths targeting French police in confrontations that end in clouds of tear gas but no known injuries, including in Clichy-sous-Bois. The town is where filmmaker Ladj Ly shot his Oscar-nominated modern police drama “Les Misérables.” A call for calm came from an unlikely person, a 30-year-old man with a long criminal record who crashed his motorcycle into the open door of a police car in Villeneuve-la-Garenne, northwest of Paris. Claims that police were at fault spread across the internet. From his hospital bed, he implored gangs to “go home,” in a video released by his lawyer. Clichy-sous-Bois was the takeoff point of nationwide rioting 15 years ago. Nightly TV images of the destruction awakened many in France to large swaths of a population they barely knew existed. The lockdown is again shining a spotlight on the still mostly invisible lives of those who struggle even in the best of times. assailants were holding at least 10 others hostage in a clothing store Those rescued were hiding in a canteen in the Qwartz centre in Villeneuve-la-Garenne a police source said adding that the hostage drama appeared to be an attempted armed robbery and not a terrorist attack "Two or three armed criminals went into the Primark store for what we think was initially an attempt at armed robbery," BBC quoted a police source as saying Traffic in the area was stopped and all other shops nearby were closed A police source said two or three gunmen entered the store around 6:30 a.m An employee of the shop "sent a text message around 7:00 a.m to her boyfriend saying that they were held hostage by two gunmen" "Le Parisien" daily said three men were involved adding that one may have been recognised as a Primark employee French police on Monday were hunting armed robbers who escaped after holding up a store in a shopping mall near Paris prompting special forces to intervene and seal off the area The three men -- one of whom was thought to be an employee of the shop -- burst into the Primark store in Villeneuve-la-Garenne early Monday said a police source who wished to remain anonymous An employee first alerted her boyfriend to the hold-up at around 7:00 am (0500 GMT) when she sent him a text message saying they had been taken hostage by two armed men The area around the Qwartz mall was shut down all traffic stopped and other stores in the vicinity closed as special forces rushed to the scene The mall was promptly evacuated but according to police 18 employees had remained inside -- some were told to stay put by the gunmen and others had managed to hide on their own one of them was unwell but no-one was injured," police said But while security forces initially thought the gunmen were still inside the mall they realized after searching the premises that the men had escaped and the search continues outside the mall," a source close to the probe said Prosecutors added they did not appear to have fled with any money Memories of attacks in January by Islamic extremists who gunned down 17 people in and near Paris -- including several who were held hostage in a Jewish supermarket -- are still fresh in many minds in France remains on high alert with some 7,000 soldiers deployed around the country to help police in countering any further attack But so far police have Créteil Soleil store Lauded as the man who invented Impressionism Paul Durand-Ruel was the art dealer who bought the works of Monet and Renoir while they were still being ignored or ridiculed Now the focus of a major exhibition at The National Gallery in London WILLIAM COOK writes about how much the art world owes to Durand-Ruel’s passion and support for these artists It was the start of an unlikely partnership which opened the door to modern art but he fell in love with Monet and Pissarro’s radical approach to painting Over the next 50 years he bought over 1000 Monets these ‘Impressionists’ (as myopic art critics called them Inventing Impressionism is a sumptuous display of some of the many pictures Durand-Ruel bought and sold but most of all it’s a tribute to the man himself Through meticulous reconstructions of his most influential exhibitions and became the first modern art dealer in the process The first room is a replica of his Paris apartment and Renoir’s tender portraits of his five children (Durand-Ruel’s wife died aged 29 Visitors were reassured to see these daring paintings in such respectable surroundings Durand-Ruel didn’t want to shock his customers He promised to buy back a painting if a buyer had second thoughts backing the Impressionists almost ruined him He borrowed heavily to buy up all their works but his passion for their paintings wasn’t always conducive to good business (he sold Renoir’s Girl With A Cat but missed it so much he bought back again) and what I liked I never managed to sell,” he recalled “My best clients began to question me: ‘How can you praise these pictures in which there is not a shred of quality?’.” Durand-Ruel refused to give up and gradually the tide began to turn he mounted a big ensemble exhibition in Paris but there is someone madder than them – the dealer who buys their work’,” remembered Monet But Durand-Ruel was smart enough to realise the publicity value of such controversy In spite of these hostile reviews (or perhaps in part because of them) people flocked to see the show Durand-Ruel was just as innovative as his artists he encouraged Monet to stage a solo retrospective – an unusual and audacious move for a living artist in those days Durand-Ruel was invited to exhibit in the USA I would have been lost,” he recollected “The Americans don’t criticise – they buy.” American collectors came to Europe to seek him out “At last the Impressionist Masters triumphed,” he wrote Berlin’s Nationalgalerie became the first public institution to buy an Impressionist painting (The Mill on the Couleuvre near Pontoise by Cezanne) It wasn’t until 1901 that a French museum the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Lyon (not Paris) finally bought an Impressionist – Woman Playing A Guitar by Renoir this stimulating exhibition culminates in a (partial) reconstruction of Durand-Ruel’s spectacular display at London’s Grafton Galleries in 1905 - still commonly (and quite rightly) regarded as the greatest Impressionist show of all time “The history of Impressionism Durand-Ruel tells in that 1905 exhibition the one we follow today,” says Christopher Riopelle “Very few artists have entered the Impressionist canon whom Durand-Ruel didn’t champion.” started a campaign to buy an Impressionist painting for the nation Rutter wanted to buy Monet’s Lavacourt under Snow (one of the highlights of the Grafton show) but the National Gallery didn’t want a Monet They spent Rutter’s money on a tamer painting who wasn’t represented by Durand-Ruel (and was also safely dead) Lavacourt under Snow was bought by the Irish collector Hugh Lane When Lane died in 1915 (he went down with the Lusitania) he left this Impressionist masterpiece Lavacourt under Snow is still hanging here today So did Durand-Ruel ‘invent’ Impressionism but it would have been very different without him These painters were already painting in a new way before he met them this revolution might well have petered out He transformed Impressionism into an international phenomenon almost anything we call ‘modern art’ can be traced back to the Impressionists – and Paul Durand-Ruel Inventing Impressionism is at The
