This summer, residents of the northern French town of Villers-Saint-Paul received a disturbing warning: Don't eat your chickens' eggs
Tests had revealed that local eggs contained a cocktail of potentially dangerous PFAS
or "forever chemicals," a group of man-made substances that do not break down and can cause serious health problems including cancer
How did these toxic chemicals get into the eggs? The answer was not entirely clear, but suspicion fell on a nearby factory run by U.S
it was Chemours itself that had conducted the tests under an agreement with the regional authorities
Maintaining locals' trust was especially important to the company at the time as it was planning a €186 million expansion to start producing PFAS chemicals vital in manufacturing green hydrogen — a carbon-free fuel that is central to Europe's decarbonization plans and the global fight against climate change
If these potentially dangerous chemicals were polluting local food
it could put hydrogen's social licence in jeopardy
"When we heard there were going to be huge investments [in the local factory] ..
Everyone though that the project was very good news," the town's Deputy Mayor Alexandre Ouizille said in an interview
pointing to job creation and the benefit to the climate
But after newspaper reports uncovered "the eternal pollution of PFAS," the mood changed
an investigation by newspaper Le Monde had revealed PFAS pollution in the area
to ask for the French environment ministry's input
"Before the commune commits further to this project
your answers to our various precautionary questions are essential to dispel any doubts about the safety of the current facility and the proposed extension," he wrote in a letter
Regional authorities say they don't know if the pollution comes from the Chemours factory
pointing out some of the types of PFAS chemicals in the eggs — including those with the highest concentration — are not associated with the factory
They'll conduct further tests to make the conclusions "more reliable."
that hasn't put local politicians at ease; some worry that ramping up production of PFAS will only increase the risk of pollution
At the heart of this dispute is a tension playing out all over the world
As countries rush to develop new technologies in an effort to halt catastrophic climate change
many of these technologies are turning out to have unforeseen side effects that pose grave risks of their own
science is only just beginning to understand
"You have two big environmental subjects at stake," said Ouizille
"You have decarbonization and you have the question of PFAS
PFAS are used to produce everything from heat pumps and batteries to solar panels and wind turbines — all crucial technologies in the EU's climate-neutral strategy
Hydrogen is a clean-burning gas that could help solve some of the trickiest decarbonisation challenges, from steel and plastic manufacturing to fuel for shipping and aviation. Restrictions on forever chemicals would have "catastrophic consequences" for hydrogen production and, by extension, the green transition, industry groups warn
Climate change, of course, comes with its own health impacts — from deaths from natural disasters and extreme heat
to rises in infectious diseases and drug-resistant bacteria emerging from melting permafrost
They're imminent and we cannot wait for decades to be able to proceed with climate action," said Daria Nochevnik
director of policy and partnerships at the Hydrogen Council industry group
"We need to work with the solutions that we have right now."
"What’s important to understand is that the effects in this study were observed at very high levels," said Chemours in an emailed statement
While Hydro-PS Acid is "not released by the Villers-Saint-Paul site today," the company pledges that the new Nafion manufacturing capabilities will "include additional investments in state-of-the-art emission control facilities with destruction efficiencies of greater than 99.9%."
Under the work-in-progress EU proposal to phase out the chemicals
the hydrogen sector has been given five years to find safer alternatives
Although there are "very few" non-PFAS alternatives to chemicals like Nafion on the market
the proposed exemption is a "reasonable time frame" to find and test new substances
argued Jonatan Kleimark of chemicals policy NGO ChemSec
especially since the EU proposal is still several years away from becoming law
Some alternatives could even be more efficient
a researcher at the Hahn-Schickard institute who is working on developing a non-PFAS alternative
But it could take a long time to scale up production
Chemours' project is still set to go ahead
but under conditions agreed with the commune
It carries out daily chemical safety monitoring and shares the results with the regional authorities
"Significant investments have been made in emission reduction technologies that are among the most effective in addressing discharges," said Chemours
"We have committed to reducing air and water process emissions of fluorinated organic chemicals by 99% or greater by 2030."
And while Deputy Mayor Ouizille acknowledges the manufacturer's cooperation
he will continue to bang the drum for PFAS-free industries
[industries] have to work on PFAS-free solutions," he said
"The health of local populations is at stake."

As part of its plans to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, the European Union has set an ambitious goal of boosting the capacity of green hydrogen to at least 40 gigawatts by 2030 – and making it cost-competitive with the cheaper and readily available fossil fuel-based hydrogen.
Strengthening the supply chain is key to meeting the growing demand for green hydrogen
the US-based global chemical company Chemours has recently decided to invest $200 million (around €189 million) to expand its 40-hectare manufacturing facility in Villers-Saint-Paul
Chemours will use the expanded regional manufacturing site to support and advance technological progress and new products for the worldwide hydrogen economy
This includes the production of its Nafion™ ion exchange materials
which can be used in clean hydrogen generation using water electrolyzers
and hydrogen conversion to power fuel cell vehicles.
We have been appointed to manage the delivery of the new facility
building on our existing relationship with Chemours in the US to help them expand operations into Europe.
The scaling-up of the hydrogen economy supply chain remains key to unlocking hydrogen’s full potential.
According to Chemours’ CEO and President Mark Newman
France was chosen for the investment because of “the French government’s goal to create a reliable and strong hydrogen economy
and the European Union’s ambition to deliver a clean energy transition based on the objectives set in the EU Climate Law.”
Our global asset delivery expertise combined with our strong local presence made us the preferred partner for Chemours as they expand into this new market.
We are providing permitting support as well as digital reporting and project management services for the new facility.
Having undertaken similar project management services for Chemours in the United States
we are applying both the in-depth experience of our US teams and our local team’s robust knowledge of the French construction market to the project.
The scaling-up of the hydrogen economy supply chain remains key to unlocking hydrogen’s full potential
the new facility will enable Chemours to support the growing market demand for clean hydrogen generation while benefiting the local economy through the creation of new jobs.
which is being supported by Paraguay’s National Electricity Commission.
Nafion™ ion exchange materials: a critical material in the hydrogen economy
Chemours’ Nafion™ ion exchange materials—including proton exchange membranes (PEM) and dispersions—are at the heart of technologies critical to scaling the hydrogen economy
Water electrolysis, a sustainable method for generating large amounts of renewable and low carbon hydrogen, is projected to reach a market size of USD$3.7 billion by 2023.[i] Chemours’ Nafion™ materials are essential to this method of scaling the hydrogen economy
as they facilitate water electrolysis more efficiently than other commercial alternatives
Water electrolysis has also been shown to be commercially viable only when fluorinated dispersions and membranes like Nafion™ are used in these systems
and these materials are the only ones that have consistently demonstrated the performance required to meet the lifetime needs of electrolyzers
Scaling operations around the world to meet hydrogen demand
Given the increasing demand for sustainable energy solutions, renewable and low carbon hydrogen generation through PEM water electrolyzers will play a crucial role in the future. There is already a growing demand for PEM technology, as demonstrated by the year over year increase in global installed electrolysis capacity.[ii]
Chemours has taken significant steps to scale its operations to meet this demand
the company announced a planned $200 million investment at its site in Villers-Saint-Paul
France to increase capacity and advance technology for our industry-leading Nafion™ materials to support the hydrogen economy
This recent investment demonstrates that this scale up is happening – and should happen – on both sides of the Atlantic to boost technological progress and advance the clean energy transition
Chemours is equally focused on scaling its operations to meet the growing domestic demand for renewable and low carbon hydrogen and is continuing to invest in capacity and innovation to produce more Nafion™ membranes and dispersions
But scaling the pipeline at the speed necessary to achieve a global hydrogen economy cannot be done through superior chemistry alone. Innovation and growth require regulatory certainty, a strong permitting structure, and solutions to make renewable and low carbon hydrogen more widely available and affordable. Moreover, as the Hydrogen Council recently noted
science-based evaluation and a thoughtful approach to risk mitigation and management is needed in order to create regulatory frameworks that support the creation of raw materials central to clean energy technology
the emission-neutral production of hydrogen is simply not achievable in the near future
Continued commitment to scaling up and helping the world meet decarbonization goals
The future growth of the global hydrogen market requires science and collaboration across public and private sectors and academia to ensure we’re working together toward a shared purpose: upscaling of renewable and low carbon hydrogen production and solutions to reach the world’s ambitious climate goals
Strategic investments across the whole hydrogen value chain will be essential for future growth – from research and development to end-use – in order to ensure a reliable supply chain and robust capacity that is needed to advance
and fast-track the implementation of hydrogen solutions
The expansion of the hydrogen economy is a global undertaking
and Chemours is committed to supporting this expansion through responsible manufacturing and support for regulatory and policy frameworks that are grounded in the best available science in order to foster the energy transition and make economies more sustainable

American chemicals producer Chemours, the group behind the Teflon brand, has been lobbying harder than any other business to water down a proposed European Union ban on harmful PFAS chemicals, according to a new report by non-profit the Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO)
Chemours has held "more high-level meetings on this topic with the Commission than any other group," and "more than doubled its declared lobby expenditure in the past year," the CEO report said
Its tactics include mobilizing other sectors to "raise the alarm on the proposal" in meetings with the Commission and "promoting a weaker scheme as an alternative to a PFAS ban," it writes
Chemours said it is "committed to Europe and its future Clean Industrial Deal and has no intention of slowing down the regulatory process," in a statement to the non-profit
"Like NGOs and representatives of the civil society
companies and trade associations are also encouraged to submit information
figures and positions to regulators and policymakers so they can make informed and data-backed decisions," Chemours said
PFAS are used in countless everyday products
and sportswear — as well as in manufacturing technologies deemed critical to Europe's future
batteries and various climate technologies
Industry-heavy German states are also lobbying against strict bans and calling for certain sectors to be allowed to continue using the chemicals
in an effort to protect a struggling chemicals sector
The findings underscore the EU's internal dilemma between boosting the bloc's struggling industry
and protecting communities from potentially toxic substances
The company is a spinoff from American chemicals manufacturer DuPont, which was the subject of a blockbuster film on the legal fight over PFAS pollution in Cincinnati starring Hollywood actor Mark Ruffalo
Now Chemours has brought that battle to Brussels, after Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway in 2023 proposed phasing out the manufacture
use and placing on the EU market of at least 10,000 PFAS
The move has riled the bloc's chemicals sector and the many industries depending on the substances
from chip-makers to wind turbine manufacturers
companies and sectors lobbying the Commission against the proposal are many and varied
but CEO singles Chemours out as the "most frequent Commission visitor on PFAS."
Of the 17 high-level meetings with the Commission since January 2023 on the topic on the public record
two were with NGOs and 12 were with the corporate sector
Chemours "held or attended at least six of these meetings," the non-profit notes
The company has also tried to coordinate with other industries. In one email obtained by CEO
Dutch company ASML — which provides technology to semiconductor manufacturers — told Dutch officials in Brussels: “Chemours has been trying for months to draw us ..
Chemours has secured meetings across various Commission departments, including the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation whom the company pressed for more derogations from the PFAS proposal
adding that otherwise it could “jeopardise investment decisions” in green hydrogen
One Chemours powerpoint dated October 2023 argues the EU should exempt fluoropolymers — a kind of PFAS — from any such restriction and should instead define the "science-based and most robust and rigorous standards" for the chemicals
Chemours told POLITICO: "We have not advocated for a benchmark instead of a regulation," adding that it wants EU technical guidance documents on fluoropolymers to "harmonize PFAS emissions in all manufacturing sites in Europe."
Chemours has helpful allies in German industrial states — despite the fact that Germany is one of the countries behind the original proposal
The chemicals sector also appears to have a sympathetic ear in the Commission
as Brussels puts increasing emphasis on "competitiveness."
Both publicly and in the documents obtained by CEO
the Commission has indicated that critical sectors reliant on PFAS need not fear — despite the fact that responsibility for the file currently lies with the European Chemicals Agency
In a letter to German European People's Party MEP Peter Liese obtained by POLITICO last year, von der Leyen said the EU executive “intends to propose exemptions for uses that are necessary for the digital and environmental transition and the strategic autonomy of the EU while no viable alternatives are available.”
Those sentiments have been echoed by new commissioners for the environment and the internal market, Jessika Roswall and Stéphane Séjourné. They both want to ban harmful PFAS in consumer uses like cosmetics
food contact materials and outdoor clothing — but for industrial applications with no adequate alternatives
they back continued use under “strictly controlled conditions until acceptable substitutes are found.”
The Commission did not respond to a request for comment

Large chemical firms posted tepid financial results in the third quarter
with many logging modest increases in sales but lackluster profits
Companies are looking to cut costs and trim their portfolios—largely in Europe—to help nudge momentum toward better results
Both sales and earnings at BASF were flat compared to the same quarter in 2023
The world’s largest chemical company saw its sales volumes improve across nearly all its businesses
though lower prices offset most of those gains
An exception was BASF’s automotive emission control catalyst unit
which had declines in both volumes and prices due to weak vehicle sales
CEO Markus Kamieth expects the poor performance to persist
we had assumed that global light vehicle production would be stable or decline slightly,” he said in prepared remarks
“After a weaker-than-expected third quarter for global light vehicle production

ACS’s Standard Package lets you stay up to date with C&EN
ACS’s Premium Package gives you full access to C&EN and everything the ACS Community has to offer
we have revised our assumptions for 2024 and now anticipate a global decline of up to 2.5% on account of lower production in Western Europe and in North America.”
The automotive slowdown also hit the engineering polymer maker Celanese
which posted modest declines in sales and earnings
Volumes of engineered materials sold into industrial segments
The company says it will temporarily idle some production facilities to reduce inventories by $200 million
It also plans to slash its dividend by 95% and institute a $75 million cost reduction program aimed mostly at selling
which posted a 1% increase in quarterly sales and a 6% decline in profits
plans to reduce annual costs by $250 million
The company is also considering shifting its portfolio to higher growth
more profitable markets like refrigerants for data center cooling
cost management must be part of our DNA,” Chemours CEO Denise Dignam said in a conference call with analysts
Chemours says it may reduce the footprint of its performance materials unit
it is putting on hold an expansion of its Nafion membrane materials plant in Villers-Saint-Paul
because of weakness in the hydrogen market
Huntsman, which posted a 37% decline in third-quarter profits, aims to cut $50 million in costs in its polyurethane business, primarily in Europe, in addition to the $280 million in costs it has cut company-wide in recent years. Polyurethane rival Dow recently announced that it was considering selling some of its European polyurethane assets
Dow is one of several chemical makers that are either selling or closing plants in Europe
which has suffered in recent years from relatively high production costs
has begun a review of its European polyolefin business
Huntsman CEO Peter Huntsman is pessimistic about Europe
“We see a record amount of global chemical assets
that are on the market,” he told analysts in a call
“I would personally be surprised if all of these assets are sold
I imagine very few of these are actually making money
“Given Europe’s desire to rid itself of manufacturing
which I see reflected in its adherence to antigrowth energy and regulatory policies
I doubt the prospects will change anytime soon
We may well see a number of facilities closed.”

InvestigationThe investigation by 'Le Monde' and 17 media partners revealed the presence of dozens of French sites where the pollution levels are considered hazardous to health
The contamination of the European continent by per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS)
ultra-toxic compounds that are persistent in the environment
Le Monde and its partners in the Forever Pollution Project investigation have identified several hundred polluted sites in France
as well as five of the 20 European PFAS production plants
This is the first attempt to measure and map the extent of this contamination in Europe
While there are more than 900 contaminated sites in France
this staggering figure greatly underestimates the reality and extent of pollution by these chemicals
Their persistence in the environment has earned them the nickname "forever chemicals." To locate these sites
we collected data from several public databases containing sampling data
are contamination "hotspots" – places where PFAS concentrations are so high (more than 100 nanograms per liter [ng/l]) that they are considered hazardous to health by relevant experts
A number of these hotspots were identified in the 2010s by a team of researchers from the Nancy Laboratory for Hydrology of the French Agency for Food
Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES)
After several months of solving scientific riddles and thanks to a freedom of information request
we were able to identify about 30 of these sites
from Pierre-Bénite (south of Lyon) to the Mediterranean Sea
owe their contamination to the discharges of only two factories: Arkema and Daikin

Old photographs can provide essential clues for family historians
Magazine reader Alan Fraser discovered.
Alan was sent an old photograph of an elderly lady standing proudly by a uniformed airman [see above]
“But I had no idea who the serviceman was.”
shot down over Germany in 1943.” The name didn’t ring any bells for Alan
and he was keen to discover what had happened to this tragic serviceman
Alan’s mission led to a trail of mistaken identities that were only resolved through the power of online crowdsourcing
come together to help each other in their search.
for not only has he broken down his brick wall – he has also connected with a large swathe of his father’s family tree
A number of them are distant cousins who he never knew existed.
Alan’s father Harold Fraser was born in Liverpool in 1907, to a family with Scottish ancestry. “Dad met my mother Marjorie Hughes when he was stationed in Essex during the Second World War
but after Dad enlisted in 1940 he had little or no contact with his family.
“He told us that he had a sister who was much older than him who had brought him up with her two children
he always felt like a spare part in the family
so I never got the chance to quiz him further about his family.”
Alan began researching his father’s side in the late 1990s, when fewer resources were online. “I ordered Dad’s birth certificate and discovered that my grandparents were James Wren Fraser and Mary Sargeant
joining the website Genes Connected (now Genes Reunited) in 2003 provided a series of big breakthroughs: “Cousins got in touch from the extended Fraser family who I had never even heard of before
Through them I was astonished to discover that Dad was one of 12 siblings
11 of whom survived.I knew he had a sister
but it was a great shock to find out that he had seven of them
Philip Green sent the photograph of my grandmother
in Liverpool with the airman.” The airman is tall
balding and looks as though he is in his thirties
a conundrum arose when another newfound cousin
sent me a photograph album that belonged to Frank Fraser
my father’s eldest brother who emigrated to Illinois
This contained the wedding photograph of a young uniformed man with a quiff who was also identified as John McGeachie
when I compared this to the original photo with Mary Sargeant
it was obvious that they were not the same person.”
Alan was baffled – was either serviceman really John McGeachie? “Having assembled a wealth of photographs, I decided to create an online family album
This site became the gateway to solving the mystery.”
The breakthrough came in 2013 when Alan was contacted by Judith Dolanski
“You have a photo of my dad!” She had been researching the Sargeant family online because she is descended from Mary’s sister Martha
Judith saw the picture of Mary Sargeant with a serviceman and identified him not as John McGeachie
“This was a real bolt from the blue,” Alan explains
“Judith told me that Clayton served with the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in Reykjavik during the Second World War
The photograph was taken on VE Day [8 May 1945]
when Clayton was visiting his great aunt Mary in Liverpool
“This set a new hare running. I decided that the young man with the quiff in the wedding photo had to be John McGeachie. Judith was keen to help, so she used her gift subscription to Ancestry to do more detective work.”
Users of American Ancestry - and British Ancestry users who have a Worldwide subscription – can access yearbooks from American high schools dating from 1900 to 1990
These can be invaluable for identifying American relatives.
“It was a huge surprise when Judith discovered John McGeachie’s high school photograph on Ancestry
The John McGeachie smiling out from his yearbook looked totally different to the young man with the quiff in the wedding photograph.”
School yearbooks can provide intriguing clues to a person’s identity
John attended Seneca Vocational High School in Buffalo
The photo caption mentioned that he studied electronics
enjoyed basketball and was nicknamed ‘Scotty’.
Judith identified a set of wedding photographs in Frank Fraser’s album of John McGeachie and his wife Alice Marie Bosack on their wedding day
so Alan and Judith knew that they had the right man.
Judith looked her up in the Buffalo telephone directory and rang her
Denise passed on the details of her daughter Lori
who has been very helpful in the search.
Lori went through Frank Fraser’s photograph album online
and identified the photographs of her grandparents
Alan and Judith knew they had found John McGeachie
High school yearbooks also helped to reveal the identity of the airman with the quiff in the wedding photograph
who married Clayton Lunt’s cousin Dorothy Stahl in 1946
Alan was now able to piece together an outline of John McGeachie’s short life
who was sent to live with relatives in Glasgow
She married George McGeachie and had four children
John joined the USAAF and became a radio operator
His training in electronics would have been essential for the role.
In 1944 he was stationed at Halesworth in Suffolk and was part of the 10-man crew of the Stubby Gal II
The B-24 was difficult to fly because of its stiff and heavy controls
and the aircraft had only one exit near the tail
making it extremely difficult for flightdeck crew to bail out while wearing a parachute
No wonder airmen nicknamed it the ‘Flying Coffin’
forts and coastal artilleries in the run-up to D-Day
The bomber took off on 2 June and made it as far as Villers-Saint-Paul
The crew bailed out at 3,000 feet and the plane crashed with John’s body on board
and were either rescued by the French Resistance or captured by the Germans.
John was buried in an American cemetery at Dinozé in north-east France
He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart
and a plaque in Villers-Saint-Paul commemorates his passing
“John was my first cousin and I never met him or knew of him
since these photos have been misidentified for decades
and very proud that her grandfather’s sacrifice is properly recognised
Alan remains thrilled with his newly expanded tree. “I’m now in touch with previously unknown family members in Britain, America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand
We visited Judith in Chicago in May 2015 and I’m in touch with both her and Lori on Facebook – they have been so helpful to my research
This certainly proves the positive side of the internet.”
