alpinist Anatoli Boukreev would have turned 67 One of the best alpinists of the 20th century Boukreev made hundreds of bold ascents and several incredible speed climbs Anatoli Nikolaevich Boukreev was born on Jan his parents gave their children everything they could Boukreev became the youngest member of the geology science group of the Young Pioneers and his interest in climbing started soon after Thanks to the “Russian school” of mountaineering Boukreev trained on 4,979m Talgar Peak in the Tien Shan Mountains in Kazakhstan Boukreev graduated in 1979 from Chelyabinsk University with a Bachelor of Science in physics and in 1991 he obtained Kazakh citizenship Boukreev’s childhood home was close to a nuclear waste site and the young Boukreev had several health problems: asthma One of his elder sisters died at 35 of cancer Boukreev realized he had to fight against his health handicaps Boukreev summited many 4,000m peaks in the Caucasus and more than 200 peaks between 5,000m and 6,000m in the Pamirs and the Tien Shan Boukreev summited 7,495m Ismail Samani in the Pamirs and 7,134m Ibn Sina in the Trans-Alay Range He reached the summit of 7,000’ers 30 times Boukreev joined the national mountaineering team and worked as an instructor and high-altitude mountaineering coach in the 1980s and 1990s he summited Ibn Sina in a record time of eight hours and needed only six hours to descend to base camp including on Ismail Samani Peak and 5,642m Elbrus he returned and summited in a record time of 10 hours and 30 minutes he finished Dhaulagiri I solo in 17 hours and 15 minutes Boukreev summited Lhotse solo in 21 hours and 15 minutes he reached Broad Peak’s Central Summit solo in 36 hours he summited Gasherbrum II in 9 hours and 30 minutes he summited Shisha Pangma solo in alpine style Anatoli Boukreev approaches Everest’s Hillary Step on May 10 Boukreev was a member of the Soviet Expedition led by Eduard Myslovsky that summited Kangchenjunga and made a full traverse of the four highest peaks in the Kangchenjunga Massif Boukreev also reached the top of Kangchenjunga’s Central Peak Boukreev summited Dhaulagiri I twice (in 1991 via a new route on the West Face and in 1995) and 1997); K2 in 1993; Makalu in 1994; Manaslu in winter in 1996; Lhotse in 1996 and 1997; Cho Oyu and Shisha Pangma Central in 1996; Broad Peak’s foresummit and Gasherbrum II in 1997 He summited four 8,000m peaks in 1996 and four more in 1997 he made the first traverse of the Pobeda Massif he reached 7,100m on 7,439m Pobeda but had to abort his ascent to rescue other climbers Boukreev didn’t like climbing with bottled oxygen the team leader ordered all climbers to use oxygen and on a couple of 8,000m expeditions when he worked as a guide He went without supplemental oxygen on Everest (3x) the American Alpine Journal published an article by Boukreev entitled The Oxygen Illusion Perspectives on the Business of High-Altitude Climbing “The use of bottled oxygen above 8,000m gives only a false security that increases risk by promoting power that masks the symptoms of illness for a time until one runs out of oxygen,” Boukreev wrote with emphasis on compensating for poor conditioning in exchange for ever-higher prices We have a very limited rescue potential above 7,500m It’s simply impossible to rescue any but the minimally debilitated in this environment…That is the sad lesson of commercial mountaineering in 1996.” You can read his full article here Boukreev was working as a guide for Mountain Madness and eight climbers couldn’t return to high camp Boukreev descended to a high camp to collect oxygen and warm tea for the struggling climbers despite the storm and with no oxygen for himself He made several attempts to find the people on the stormy mountain and saved three lives This was the famous Into Thin Air disaster journalist Jon Krakauer later complained that because Boukreev did not use supplemental oxygen Boukreev defended himself and made counter-allegations with several books and movies about that tragic spring Boukreev liked teamwork and had many friends in the mountaineering community “Mountains are not stadiums where I satisfy my ambitions to achieve,” wrote this informal mountain philosopher I approach them as any human goes to worship I strive to perfect myself physically and spiritually In December 1997, Boukreev, Simone Moro, and Dmitry Sobolev attempted Annapurna I via the east face of Fang and Annapurna’s southwest ridge while they were fixing the ropes in a couloir at around 5,700m a big cornice broke loose from Annapurna’s western wall causing a huge avalanche that killed Boukreev and Sobolev he saw an ice cornice falling from the ridge at 6,350m Moro called out a warning to Boukreev and saw him run to his right to dodge the avalanche Moro clung to the fixed rope but fell 700m-800m The fall knocked him unconscious and partly buried him in the snow he called out but did not receive an answer Search and rescue operations were not successful The deadly avalanche buried Boukreev and Sobolev Boukreev was posthumously awarded the Order of Personal Courage by the President of Kazakhstan “I want to achieve something essential in life something that cannot be measured by wealth or position in society I want to respect myself as a man and to earn the respect of my friends and family.” but his relatively Anatoli Bugorski was working for the Institute for High Energy Physics on a device called the U-70 synchrotron This was a nuclear particle accelerator that at time of construction held the world record for beam energy meaning that it could generate the beam with the highest energy in the world While that record has since been surpassed there is one person who was hit with that powerful beam and survived - and we've already told you the name and date it happened Bugorski leaned into the device to check a piece of malfunctioning equipment and didn't realise that the safety mechanism wasn't functioning The scientist was hit in the head with a proton beam and saw 'a flash brighter than a thousand suns', though seemingly didn't feel pain from what had happened The parts of his head hit by the beam were exposed to between 200,000 to 300,000 roentgens of radiation many times above a dose that should be lethal Despite being hit with a massive amount of radiation right to the head the left side of his face swelled up and his skin started to peel off Doctors could also see the path the beam had taken through his skin skull and brain and expected him to die at some point over the next few weeks According to Wired the path through the man's head continued to burn resulting in nerve damage that paralysed the scientist on the left side of his face those were the only major signs of taking a proton beam full of enough lethal radiation to kill many men to the face The paralysed left side of his face also didn't age so much compared to the right side wrinkles would only form on the right side of his face The human capacity for survival is being tested." During the 90s, he expressed an interest in leaving Russia and moving west where he could be studied further, but didn't have the money to move despite having a proton beam shot through his head the retired scientist seems to still be alive Despite his longevity we wouldn't recommend being hit with a proton beam Topics: Science, Health, Weird Joe graduated from the University of Salford with a degree in Journalism and worked for Reach before joining the LADbible Group. are more tied to their homes and workplaces 📌 “Whether it’s February 23 or April 1 – it doesn’t matter What matters is that both the candidates and the outcome are predetermined” The first refuses to participate in the campaign because of election fraud The third group includes people who might want to abstain but are dependent on the government through work or dormitories All these people support free elections because they took to the streets in 2020 This is why we should prioritize fair elections We need to work with both our supporters and those who are unsure” 📌 “Politicians representing reported episodes of alleged violence during Gigauri’s arrest including verbal insult and a punch by a police officer; he was then stopped as he drove his car with two other individuals and was stopped by the riot police and allegedly physically assaulted leaving him with bleeding face; Gigauri claims that after he was then taken to the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ main division several police officers assaulted him and the patrol inspector for whose alleged assault he had been arrested also assaulted him in the presence of other police officers The organization has urged the relevant agencies to promptly collect crucial evidence such as video footage from the involved officer’s body cameras and surveillance cameras at the police stations where Gigauri was detained The Rule of Law Centre also stressed the need for equal treatment under the law demanding that police violence be investigated with the same urgency as when citizens are accused of assaulting officers The Center expressed concern that the law enforcement agencies react and provide information to the public only in cases involving alleged violations by protest participants “and not when protest participants themselves become victims of violence.” Anatoli Gigauri was arrested on November 25 and was charged under the first paragraph of Article 353 Prima of the Criminal Code of Georgia which pertains to “assault on police officers or other representatives of the authorities or on a public institution.” Despite these allegations and physical evidence of his injuries Gigauri was placed in pretrial detention on November 26 Your Honor – said activist Anatoli Gigauri who is accused of assaulting police officer Vakhtang Gabunia the investigators involved in the case – Tevdore Grigalashvili and Vakhtang Dabrunashvili – were questioned who is charged with assaulting officer Vakhtang Gabunia He stated that Gigauri had visible injuries Gigauri explained that he fell while being administratively detained and received the injuries then This statement caused protest from the defendant Gigauri told the judge that the witness was lying He insisted that he had exercised his right to remain silent and hadn’t said anything to the investigators "I exercised my right to remain silent and didn’t tell them anything Are you responsible for what happened in your room or not are you not accountable for the violation that occurred and I told you I was using my right to remain silent Do you have the right to strip a person naked Why did you force me to undress and wear pants and a sweater that were two sizes too big Gabunia came into your room and was hitting me on the head and you just kept clicking on your computer without reacting in the presence of this gentleman," said Gigauri Judge Jvebe Nachkebia asked the investigator if such a conversation had taken place between him and the defendant The investigator replied: “I don’t remember the exact words he used.” The judge also asked if the defendant had been stripped As for the reason why he didn’t want to give a statement – as far as I remember he didn’t want to provide any information," replied Vakhtang Dabrunashvili also did not confirm during the session that Gigauri had any head injuries He stated in court that in the video footage he reviewed he did not see police officer Vakhtang Gabunia strike Gigauri "I started an investigation regarding the assault on a police officer and during the interrogation I noticed some redness on his face and neck and I didn’t see Gabunia strike Gigauri," Giorgashvili said is requesting that Gigauri be recognized as a victim the investigators’ testimonies significantly differ from reality as the video shows the officer hitting Gigauri while Gigauri was in a state of necessary self-defense Anatoli Gigauri has been charged under Article 353¹ which pertains to assault on a police officer Event | Contact French | English A tech entrepreneur with over 7 Please publish modules in offcanvas position Home / IAVI Report / ‘We’re moving in the right direction’ On a cloudy and cool evening in Lusaka in early February I sat on an outdoor terrace talking with Anatoli Kamali and Penny Moore the increasingly prominent role researchers and investigators in Africa are playing in the quest to develop an HIV vaccine President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the meetings in Lusaka were designed to both take stock of the program’s accomplishments and to plan for its future success USAID has fostered leadership among African scientists funneled through IAVI to its network of partner institutions It helped establish a network of clinical research centers in five sub-Saharan African countries and India These clinical research centers are now actively engaged in basic science and clinical research that is helping advance HIV vaccine design and development USAID’s support also allowed IAVI to conduct large cohort studies of HIV-infected individuals in Africa that have provided some of the most useful clues for researchers who are working to design novel vaccine candidates the latest iteration of the now decades-long partnership between USAID and IAVI places an even greater emphasis on shifting leadership to African investigators allowing the program “to be driven by Africans for Africa.” This involves further developing scientific research capacity on the continent by supporting young African scientists so they can become leaders in the global efforts to develop and eventually implement a future HIV vaccine and other prevention strategies Much of this work happens through ADVANCE’s Vaccine Immunology Science and Technology for Africa (VISTA) consortium The motivation for involving African scientists and populations in this work couldn’t be more obvious—Eastern and Southern Africa are still home to the largest number of people living with HIV according to statistics from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS There is arguably nowhere on earth that could benefit more from a long-lasting ADVANCE is one of many ongoing efforts to cultivate promising African scientists The Human Heredity and Health in Africa Consortium (H3Africa) is another example This program aims to facilitate African scientists to conduct research into diseases on the African continent and to support a sustainable African research enterprise There is a broad base of international support these days for public health and genomics research in Africa stemming from the support of various governments and organizations There are also many terms used to describe the efforts to develop the scientific capacity of African researchers and institutions The most common is probably capacity building African researchers bristle slightly at this term “It ignores everything that we have on the continent and all the successes we’ve had in the past but sometimes it’s slightly denigrating too,” though Moore acknowledges that South Africa is in some ways unique among sub-Saharan African nations “South Africa is a little bit different because I think we have kind of a higher starting position in some respects.” a native of Uganda who oversees IAVI’s programs in Africa from its offices in Nairobi agrees that the term “capacity building” undervalues the significant intellectual resources and infrastructure that already exist across the region “Capacity building has the connotation that you are building something from scratch you are developing the capacity that is already here “Whoever comes to Africa is finding the platform is already here and they are just enhancing the capacity of individuals and networks toward improving their capabilities to respond to their health needs.” After decades of investment in developing the infrastructure and human capacity to conduct scientific research in Africa I asked Kamali and Moore how they measure the success of these efforts “That’s a little complicated,” says Kamali “There are traditional ways—number of people trained number of post-docs trained—but they have their limitations “There are several more objective ways to measure success including the number of African scientists who assume leadership roles,” says Kamali “The idea is that these individuals should be prepared to take over for the current generation that is leading research programs and institutions We’ve trained these individuals and post-docs The next measure of success is whether they will now be able to recruit and train another cohort of scientists themselves so that it is an effect that continues to build number of publications by African scientists in peer-reviewed journals I think that’s a very tangible measure.” Moore nods in agreement “Another is the number of grants that young African scientists apply for and receive as the lead grant holders is studies being led by African investigators.” Earlier that day during the ADVANCE meetings a post-doc who studies B- and T-cell immune responses to early HIV infection at the Kenya Medical Research Institute Wellcome Trust Research Programme in the coastal town of Kilifi was asked how she defined success as an African scientist Her answer was simple: “Success for a scientist in Africa looks the same as it does for a scientist anywhere It’s the same things that define success.” “I thought that was a brave and accurate response They are the same measures of success,” she says “We need to have African-led research grants that are sourced by Africans from international grant-funding bodies and those really are the same measures of success that any young scientists in the U.S “I also agree with the point Anatoli is making that we want these students to turn into the next set of leaders and to develop their own research programs.” Nduati currently holds a mid-career fellowship from IDeAL (the Initiative to Develop African Research Leaders) one of 11 of the Developing Excellence in Leadership and Science (DELTAS) Africa initiatives that are funded by the Wellcome Trust and the U.K She also is a part of the IAVI VISTA consortium she has a grant from the sub-Saharan African Network for TB/HIV Research Excellence (SANTHE) If you can wade through all those acronyms you quickly realize that Nduati is one of the success stories a sign that the focus on developing the capabilities of African scientists and institutions is paying off “If you want scientists to stay in Africa and build their careers here very hard to see when you’re a young scientist,” says Moore it is sometimes hard to see how you can stay in Africa and do science But now there are a lot of people finding that pathway but I think it is certainly happening more now.” Kamali acknowledges that there is still plenty of work to do to shift the balance to Africa but the scientific progress on display from the young and mid-level HIV researchers suggests things are moving in the right direction but I think that if we continue on the same track and at the same pace Part of what makes it easier for these young scientists to forge their careers in Africa today is the significant institutional capacity that has been strengthened over recent decades can now provide the support systems to conduct scientific research at the highest levels an individual’s success is dependent on the institution’s success “I suppose institutional success is creating a system so that a young scientist can look at the institution and know that they can shape their career there and be safe in knowing that when they need to buy reagents they have grant managers to help with that It is also knowing that grant-funding bodies like the Wellcome Trust are going to know that their facilities are good enough to manage the grants once they are awarded,” says Moore “Those should be the least of your worries as a young scientist Your worries should be coming up with the cool ideas and innovative science Institutional success is what allows a scientist to focus on science.” The improved institutional capacity not only helps retain young African researchers on the continent “Once the institutional capacity has been developed then you start seeing those institutions attracting African scientists from Europe and America back to Africa It actually reverses brain drain,” says Kamali “But that can only be achieved when African institutions meet a certain level and scientists can access everything they need to be able to do what they were to do if they were in the north.” Another sign of institutional success is seen through South-to-South collaborations which is when African institutions are partnering with each other or with institutions in India “Much of the work is African institutions partnering with U.S which of course you can’t totally avoid,” says Kamali “Nor do you want to avoid it,” Moore interjects “But you also want to see these research consortia develop between African institutions that are sharing expertise.” There is a reigning sentiment of optimism in the HIV vaccine field today (see “Overflowing with Antibodies and Optimism,” IAVI Report Much of this optimism is driven by the work on broadly neutralizing antibodies—those relatively rare proteins that are capable of inactivating many of the currently circulating isolates of HIV These antibodies allowed scientists to identify new targets on the virus that they can exploit in vaccine design and have opened up the possibility of using broadly neutralizing antibodies directly for prevention a strategy referred to as passive administration or antibody-mediated prophylaxis “All of the people who’ve worked on all of these things for so long have always hoped that at some point we will be at the stage where the science drives the questions enough to be able to start testing things that we think might actually work,” says Moore “It is the type of blue-sky science that has finally translated into something that I think will be useful but both the active and the passive immunization arms are hugely exciting and promising Based on work that originated with HIV-infected African volunteers, some of these vaccine approaches and passively administered antibodies are, or will soon be, returning to Africa to be tested in clinical trials (see The best is yet to come) The significance of this is not lost on any African investigator “I think many other people have the same sense of satisfaction from seeing these approaches come back to be tested in Africa it is the culmination of many years of work.” It turns out that this HIV vaccine and antibody work also has more than its roots in Africa a lot of the great science was done in Africa including defining how these antibodies develop and defining how common they are,” says Moore “It’s much more than just the fact that we have these incredible cohorts that people have built up over many Now researchers on the continent are contributing in yet another way toward the quest to develop an HIV vaccine “Many African scientists are also involved in understanding whether these trials are going to work which I think is exactly the model that we want to see,” Moore says “These antibodies and vaccines will be tested here and people in African countries will be measuring the immune responses and seeing whether these concepts will work The fact that this work involves African researchers from the start may also positively affect eventual acceptance of any future products that are developed “Rather than saying this product was tested to be safe in France and in Belgium and now it’s time to go to Africa these are products that we have participated in developing right from the beginning,” he says are coming back to the populations from the countries where they were first isolated I think it would be a unique and historical discovery to show that this work started with the communities in need and then these products came back and eventually delivered to these same communities.” Business as usual will not allow a better state of readiness in the global health security agenda and communities and health systems will certainly not be better prepared if global health stakeholders don’t apply lessons learned from past epidemics in a more thoughtful and deliberate way and nonprofit and for-profit product developers need to work together to muster adequate funding and innovative partnership models to collectively prepare in between outbreaks Emerging Infectious Diseases & Scientific Strategy We book collaboration with elder Chris Azaare in Bolgatanga The project will spell out the connections between different notions of property and categories of people competing over land and its use — Land ownership is a big deal in many cultures Just cut a tree one foot past your property line and see how quickly your neighbor arrives on the scene Who owns the land in a society can have profound implications including how the land is used and how sustainably resources are managed It becomes further complicated when only a small percentage of a country’s land is legally registered with the rest being claimed by competing oral histories This is the case with the African nation of Ghana Relationships of indigenous peoples to their land and the use of that land will be the primary focus of research by Dr. Anatoli Ignatov, assistant professor in Appalachian State University’s Goodnight Family Department of Sustainable Development when he begins two trips to Ghana Ignatov will travel to Ghana this summer for a five-week stint later followed by a 12-week flex option period from May to August 2018 in political science was based on fieldwork in that country where he studied political responses to an ongoing environmental crisis His expertise is specifically in researching and articulating the relationships between land and people land ownership in Ghana is a complex mix of customary and statutory systems This leads to significant ambiguity and land disputes because only 10-20 percent of land ownership is legally registered Ownership of the rest of the land is woven into oral history Competing oral histories and the political activities of chiefs and earth priests affect who makes the decisions about how the land is used and how sustainably resources are managed land is thought of in terms of jurisdictions or political territories taxed and provided with infrastructure and development land is embedded in a social covenant with ancestors and spiritual entities and rituals serve to continue the covenant This idea of the sacred has implications for sustainable interactions with the environment Ignatov and his research collaborators pictured during an interview in Sambolgu the project “aims to provide insights into the contemporary debates about sustainability and the central question of what is to be sustained and to cast light on the complex interactions between the plural land tenure system in Ghana and development and state-building processes.” Concerning benefit of this project to Ghana “The project could benefit the host country by clarifying both who holds allocative authority over land and the status of contested land previously acquired by the state It might also illuminate the tensions between customary and formal land rights regimes and how these tensions shape and have been shaped by Ghana’s Land Administration Project and various donor interventions intended to promote development.” using both interpretive and ethnographic methods He plans to write a book about the results of his research and offer a series of articles in peer-reviewed journals He also hopes for a documentary film that would be produced in collaboration with Appalachian and the National Film and Television Institute in Accra “I will work on building a long-term institutional collaboration between Appalachian and the University for Development Studies in Tamale [Ghana].” He will also mentor graduate students during his two trips funded by the Fulbright award Ignatov was educated in Bulgaria and developed an interest in African philosophies while studying at Johns Hopkins University A number of collaborative experiences and personal contacts within the African studies community helped him realize how African perspectives are largely absent from the archive of environmental political theory His research highlights African ecological knowledge and he makes a point to include African perspectives into his teaching “I strongly believe that one of the hallmarks of higher education is helping students to deepen one another’s awareness of our global connectedness and of the interdependence between people and the environment,” he said “My hope is that by introducing voices commonly excluded from the classroom political discourse and intellectual study and requiring that we engage these arguments with the same care and rigor as we would Agricultural Association in Ierapetra a partner in the pilot project of the ‘BIO-ADAPTATION’ Operational Group The funded project of Measure 16 “Cooperation” is being implemented under the scientific guidance of the Laboratory of Vegetable Production at the Agricultural University of Athens and the coordination of GAIA EPICHEIREIN which is highly experienced in the implementation of such programmes Karalakis refers to the cooperative’s objectives and the ‘persistence’ of its producers/members in adopting new practices in cultivation “The implementation and certification of Integrated Management programmes and quality systems as well as the offer of high-tech services by specialised scientific personnel have resulted in an increase in production of 10%-12% per year,” he underscores In the context of adopting the above scientific innovations the cooperative is participating in the Operational Group’s project aimed at implementing and evaluating innovative biostimulants that reduce the water and fertiliser needs of plants in greenhouse tomato cultivation The ‘Anatoli’ Agricultural Association was founded on 17 December 2000 by a group of farmers/vegetable producers in the region for the purpose of equal cooperation and mutual assistance of its members/partners in economic through a co-owned and democratically administered enterprise and together they cultivate a total of over 100 hectares a fact that has led to Anatoli’s being considered one of the leading cooperatives in the sector in Greece “A significant percentage of the cooperative’s products – up to 90% of some products such as cucumbers – are marketed abroad in the Balkans and throughout Europe,” said the president of the Anatoli Agricultural Association The cooperative’s auction house is open to domestic and foreign traders which the cooperative supports through participation in programmes and exhibitions “exports mean better and more stable prices.” He also added that “if all our products go to the vegetable market in Athens or Thessaloniki A major asset for the cooperative is its winter vegetable production as well as the quality of the products it produces all the greenhouses have been planted and we are starting to harvest In January-February we are at the height of production and we have production up to May-June,” he explains “You have to find and use the right formulation and another one shortly before harvesting,” – Giorgos Karalakis president of ‘Anatoli’ Agricultural Association The participation of producers in the BIO-ADAPTATION Operational Group has brought major benefits “Our producers are well informed and advanced in terms of technology that can help cultivation They use everything new that comes out.” The cooperative’s agronomists help with the adoption and implementation of new technologies “they go to crops every day and help producers.” The application of biostimulants has very positive results for production “They impart quality and colour and quantity,” Mr “Biostimulants help the plant in terms of nourishment gaining strength; they give the plants substances they can’t get from the soil,” he adds The positive changes in greenhouse tomato cultivation using biostimulants are significant as the president of the cooperative points out “you have to find and use the right formulation and another one shortly before harvesting.” The said decision was made by Lela Maridashvili they discussed the extent of preventive measures against the detainee The prosecutor's office demanded the use of the strictest measure of restraint against the detainee Prosecutor Tamar Iakobidze talked about the dangers of the accused hiding committing new crimes and destroying evidence which is why the prosecution considers it appropriate to use imprisonment The defense did not agree to the motion of the prosecutor's office the judge herself could see the injuries inflicted on the accused by the policemen they do not deny the handshake on the part of the accused Gigauri acted within the framework of necessary repulsion The lawyer filed a motion to release the detainee without preventive measures and offered the court a bail of 10,000 GEL as an alternative The defendant Anatoli Gigauri himself spoke about the violence by the policemen during the trial "I am a person who can answer for his behavior I lived for this to give me a better opportunity for my future I want to be an example for my son to take responsibility for his own actions," Gigauri said Anatoli Gigauri was arrested by law enforcement officers on November 25 According to the information of the investigation the accused attacked the patrol-inspector who was there for the protection of public order and physically assaulted him Anatoli Gigauri was charged under You can read it in original here your work was a big part of this broader movement of post-Soviet postmodernism It doesn’t seem you have any nostalgia for the times of ideological ambivalence Anatoly Ulyanov: I have nothing against nostalgia The events that followed the Great Recession are more significant than anything I experienced in the early 2000s The one that robbed me of the opportunity to live and work in Ukraine although it was an integral part of my journey to all the horrifying delights of today This recent decade reminds me of the post-Soviet 1990s that shattered my family It has a similar intensity of ruthlessness V.Y.: I can see why postmodernity attracted so many people Its irony and indifference to all kinds of ideological indoctrination seemed emancipatory But our principles became as liquid as our gender in the process The very sense of freedom came from unscrupulousness It’s liberating to live disregarding any fact But then we woke up in this world of post-truth And found ourselves being commodified symbols of market niches Ruled by the ad-algorithms and views that change according to conjuncture Living in the world where success and the “quality” of a human is measured by their wealth many didn’t realize that postmodernism was an ideology that pretended it wasn’t one Cooking minds to accept the religion of neoliberal capitalism Its “freedom” is all about that: there are no ideals the world is all about you and your emotional self – take and stop thinking of the social price of your privatized joy we can see this cynical postmodernity in action Putin has adopted it to establish his autocracy It also serves the Ukrainian national-democrats to reinforce their elitist privileges and marginalize dissenters A.U.: It’s because statements are secondary to the material conditions that define all social and political forms What matters is not how we string together words or even what moral aspirations are fueling them but how the production and distribution of material goods are organized And it is important to see the interests of what class the economic system the postmodern has been more of a protective reaction to the unreflected shock of the fall of communism and the arrival of capitalism with a not very human face A.U.: There is no “capitalism with a human face.” It is impossible to exploit people humanly And capitalism is impossible without exploitation profit extraction is its inherent condition The regional differences between capitalisms correspond to the differences in the material development of the regions in question brought to us by US-backed liberals; and Ukrainian nationalists who rose from the yeast of the US-backed Maidan are products of the market empire and its triumph in 1991 I see no point to break it down into “good” and “bad” capitalism We all live in the same interconnected historical reality V.Y.: Becoming a leftist meant to overcome this paradigm the citadel of capitalism and Western imperialism A.U.: I became a communist after the capitulation of Bernie Sanders amid the BLM uprising of 2020 After everything I’ve seen during the pandemic: no hospital beds and then billionaires blooming like leeches over the suffering of the whole world – my “pink socialism” became red as a wound When I saw militarized cops beating the soul out of unarmed Black teenagers – there was no Imaginary America left in me anymore The myth that was fed to me my whole life by Hollywood The imperial behemoth who told me that I am the brute from the totalitarian snowdrift and that it’s I who should accept the “democracy” of a Western Savior – the one who imposed a contemptuous view of my history – that beast became exposed Another contributing factor was the decommunization in Ukraine Under the guise of “the fight against totalitarianism,” the right has purged Ukrainian politics of dissent and declared people like myself ethnically inferior speaking “dog’s language.” The only way of belonging they offered to people like me was guilt V.Y.: When you say “people like me,” who are you referring to decommunization was an extension of my exclusion from Ukraine the nationalists said: “Bear with us because we have suffered so much.” Then “Accept our national order or get out.” I will never forget how one of my classmates at the University of Journalism in Kyiv changed overnight amid the Orange Revolution of 2004 The Ukrainian right used the social dynamics of the past to justify their arbitrariness in the present The tendency to oust the “wrong Ukrainians” and the bizarre concept of a “titular nation” have turned millions of people into second-class citizens This transformation of oppressed into oppressor concerns me greatly It reveals this swinging historical inertia that turns life into an endless loop of domination and revenge and the market empire is for human dignity I pride myself with whatever vile labels conservatives use to mark people like me If someone wants to dismiss the Soviet experience as alien accept it all as the ingredients of myself Not only because these elements are related to my truth Socialism is much more attractive to me than anything that the status quo offers – both in the US and in Ukraine it remains viable both for the anti-capitalist struggles and as an internationalist key to the most interesting people everywhere: dissidents but more importantly – all of the working and oppressed whose challenging real-life experience hardened their personalities V.Y.: Tell us more about how your experience of exile in the U.S A.U.: I did not think I was running away to heaven but I fled to the “capital of the world,” which had just elected its first Black president and looked like a starship compared to Ukraine While I was already critical of US foreign policy I saw a liberal as a lesser evil than a nationalist But I was not yet aware of the incest between Ukrainian nationalism I called my opponents “conservatives.” That included nationalists but I hadn’t yet identified myself as a leftist I associated the left with totalitarian collectivism Or with people who spray ACAB on the wall before getting stoned in their parents’ garage None of that corresponded either to my class or the consciousness that accompanied it I imagined myself as a “creative persona,” “not like everyone else,” and contrasted myself to the “masses” as the carriers of conservatism V.Y.: In what social milieu did you find yourself my milieu was the middle-class intelligentsia settling in the only neighborhoods I could afford – working-class Like Crown Heights in Brooklyn or Westlake in L.A This new social environment triggered my political awakening It opened up a different perspective on the U.S. and the reality of the “land of the free.” My immigrant experience with the US system and everyday life in America only exacerbated this critical view resocialization raises questions of belonging and identity seeking asylum from a country that is revealed to me as an oligarchic police state backed the geopolitical projects that have driven me into exile Censorship and violence are rising to exclude anyone who doesn’t fit the new patriotic standards The state of being trapped in-between two fires living somewhere and nowhere at the same time is something that makes you address those aching questions like “who are you,” and “where are you going?” V.Y.: What was the main challenge of your class transition I knew that people could be of different colors but I had no understanding of race as a social construct My skin color was never part of my identity The Soviet text provided me with a decolonial concept of “people’s friendship.” But here I felt that race was everywhere and that I “should” align myself with it which is a condition of assimilation in this country as well as a tool of social control To separate me from the people in the hood I’m living in and “gentrifying” it by my very presence in this skin that contributes to an advancement of the ruling class These artificial yet established borders are at the heart of my conflict with American society The only people I’m interested in connecting in the U.S are those I’m not “supposed” to connect with here by design A design that implies competitive loneliness.   V.Y.: How would you describe the political situation that you faced in the U.S. A.U.: The global response to the Great Recession was the rise of right-wing sentiments As well as the left mobilization of youth in the West immigrant families separated and caged on the border to the promised land Trump brought me into the Democratic Socialists of America V.Y.: Ukraine’s postcoloniality is mainly associated with Russia it’s instrumentalized by nationalists to racialize Russian speakers No one in Ukraine uses postcolonial theory as a tool to criticize Western imperialism is one of those forefront colonial enclaves of the market empire Our people made this belated bet on capitalism trapped within the mindset of post-purchase rationalization having this post-Soviet allergy to anything remotely leftist they crawl over the Polish strawberry fields into another “bright future,” that holds nothing for us but rubber gloves to clean Italian toilets Only a few of us have a chance at “success.” Which is to join the machine of exploitation as its colonial administrators guns – classics… But “independence” on IMF loans that our children and their children won’t be able to pay back; Carpathian trees becoming IKEA chairs; the aspiration to join the imperial military bloc NATO written in the Constitution of our sovereign state – none of this alarms us… This is our way of “European integration” – to pimp our Motherland to “the better master.” We keep telling ourselves that it’s not capitalism that brings us to our current problems So we’re going deeper into the swamps of the market empire trying to purge ourselves from our past and replace it with the imported present of “true capitalism.” This is a casino fever.   V.Y.: How would you describe the problem of racism and the consequences of the colonial era in the U.S. A.U.: Without knowing the history of colonialism it is difficult to understand what the empire is why New York has skyscrapers while Nairobi has slums where the wealth of all those white Westerners who now teach us human rights came from and how to recognize the machinery of colonialism today which is systemic and passive-aggressively subtle in the U.S and opportunities are dislocated across different social groups And the issue of race is not as much a question of phenotype as of place in the hierarchy and prospects of the people who are subordinated to its inherent injustice And by the color of the skin in particular I’m not talking about substituting class for race but about their interconnection in American society classes are historically racialized in the U.S Both race and class are part of the machinery of social control and of the reproduction of the system that relies on exploitation The owners of this system need to nurture and maintain the segregated have-nots so they serve them in the process of profit extraction Accompanied by the fragmentation of the oppressed this mechanism is crucial to preserve the status quo of those in power Colonizers invented a “savage” to justify and develop the system of racial oppression and the hierarchy they so fanatically preserve was created the most exploited and oppressed segments of the population To grasp the full depth of the crime American society is rooted in we need to comprehend this complex dialectic between race But neither can we take the class out of the race feeding each other and serving an unchanging purpose: the reproduction of a certain social order many believe that a “dictatorship of minorities” is taking shape in the West The problem are those in power who exploit identities to prevent solidarity One should not confuse neoliberal identity politics with the nuanced agendas rooted in the realities of different communities The fact that elites exploit the BLM movement or a rainbow flag for electoral spectacle doesn’t mean that the struggles of the people aren’t real The fear of “minorities’ dictatorship” is a right-wing hoax The only minority in power whose dictatorship should be our concern is the minority of the super-rich V.Y.: When Ukraine introduced quotas for Ukrainian language in the media those who supported this offered the following reasoning: the Ukrainian and the Russian languages cannot coexist on an equal footing without regulation by the state because the Ukrainian language has been oppressed for centuries that we should be the loudest supporters of BLM and yet it’s quite the opposite – a lot of Ukrainians are siding with the white supremacists on the question of African-American rights A.U.: It’s sad to see Ukrainians who side with the oppressor while being unable to recognize themselves in the oppressed Many of us tend to prefer the illusion of our belonging to the White man we’re the “savages” to be “civilized.” The source of cheap labor So instead of licking the boots of our colonizers and learn from their experience of decolonial liberation we first met neocolonialism in the 1990s while people of Africa and Latin America have been acquainted with this beast for much longer feminists and the LGBTQ community have become more visible in Ukraine Western donors fund organizations in the civilian sector and push Ukrainian politicians to be more attentive to gender equality and the protection of LGBTQ rights Pride marches and marches for women’s rights happen every year But left ideas are hardly ever heard at these events Liberal nationalists dominate the discourse Feminism and the struggle for LGBTQ rights are going hand in hand with capitalism It’s not very common to hear our feminists and queers criticizing Western imperialism it is uncomfortable to criticize the hand that feeds you A.U.: The lack of leftists in the Ukrainian LGBTQ community reflects the lack of leftists in the Ukrainian public sphere in general Which is the result of this broader post-Soviet “decommunization” of Ukrainian society and the right-wing violence that accompanies it the Ukrainian leftists bear a part of the responsibility for this lack as well Many of us are stuck in Marxist orthodoxy and rely on pure class analysis while ignoring the complexity of modern social structures We tend to disregard peoples’ identities as a bourgeois whim we are failing to incorporate nuanced agendas of different communities into our programs it’s not important – what’s important is class Here is the giant book from the 19th century It explains everything in the most boring way possible Now read it and come to us afterward.” No surprise LGBTQ people drive themselves into neoliberal NGOs where they are recognized and soon become the weaponized soft power of the market empire Instead of blaming individualism for the lack of solidarity the left should build bridges between different social groups And show people that their diverse struggles are connected and rooted in the mechanics of the class society we have to erode and dismantle If we’ll be able to reveal not only the general picture of systemic class divisions but also how they affect us all in our kinky diversity solidarity will once again become a possibility The monolithic working class no longer exists and navigate through complex and fragmented social structures it is still an extremely heterogeneous milieu There are leftists who pay attention to the voice of women who think that nothing has changed in the world since Lenin and Trotsky A.U.: I’m not interested in sectarian wars All I can say is that the label “leftist” seems growingly empty to me I prefer to say it bluntly: I am a communist Without the shy prefix “democratic,” as if anything undemocratic can be truly socialist I don’t want to hide under the umbrella of vague leftism I want the dream of a classless society to be clear Our Marxist orthodox have a lot to learn from the developments of the Western Left Just like the Western Left could power themselves up by rediscovering the core of Marxism arming themselves with the most powerful weapon communists have our socialism is a bucket of dead dogmas and good intentions V.Y.: What can you say about the LGBTQ movement in the U.S. and intersectional approach to the theme of oppression A.U.: I see no deficit of left ideas in the U.S The bigger problem here is how authorities deal with these ideas they suppress them with violence and prohibition I won’t be surprised if it can absorb cannibals into moderate centrists The Democratic Party has its house socialists and reduces it all to moral exclamations within identity politics It disarms the left by turning their agenda into a shiny sticker on the façade of the status quo We are used to seeing our enemies as conservative and aggressive men who are stuck in the past of their caves the major villains are people like Bezos or Musk whose “caves” are covered with rainbow flags and they drink the blood of their workers with a welcoming smile which speaks for the whole of the community from specific class positions Is there actual solidarity between white middle-class housewives at the Women’s March and those Latina women who serve them sausages while they are listening to the wisdom of Hollywood stars What can the white gay couple from WEHO know about the interests of a Black transgender woman who lives in a tent We connect all these people with the word “community,” but are they really one What I’m sure of is that we need to pay more attention to the material conditions that define peoples’ lives V.Y.: It is difficult to talk about communism as an alternative to capitalism in Ukraine Not only because of the ban on communist ideology but also because of the recent experience of building communism in Ukraine An experience that has left an ambiguous and dramatic mark on many Ukrainian families A.U.: Global warming leaves no alternative to breaking up with capitalism but the death of mankind We might have different opinions regarding what should replace capitalism What is fundamental to understand here is that capitalism cannot be fixed And that it is not the final point in the development of humanity after which there will be nothing but better capitalism Our efforts must be directed not towards improving the status quo or criticizing its alternatives based on examples from the past but towards the exodus from capitalism in the present What we need is to connect and fight the exploitation which holds us back and the inequality that quells the full bloom of all human beings 11 a body had been discovered in the 3900 block of South Lone Pine Avenue that is believed to be Anatoli Dvorschi The Springfield Police Department has issued democracy wrote Andrei Sakharov to the European Parliament when recommending him for the prize Anatoli Marchenko (1938-1986) was one of the former Soviet Union's best-known dissidents He died in Chistopol prison following a three-month hunger strike for the release of all Soviet prisoners of conscience but had spent over 20 years of his life in prison and internal exile The international outcry that followed his death was a major factor in finally pushing Mikhail Gorbachev then Secretary-General of the Communist Party to authorise the large-scale release of political prisoners in 1987 Marchenko became widely known through My Testimony an autobiographical account of his time in Soviet labour camps and prison copied by hand by the dissident underground and later published in the West was the first to discuss the camps and prisons of the post-Stalin period awakening the world to the reality that the Gulag had not ended with Stalin Its publication landed Marchenko in prison again for anti-Soviet propaganda but before he was re-incarcerated in 1968 he openly became a dissident publically denouncing jail conditions for political prisoners In an open letter to the media in July 1968 he warned that the Soviet Union would not allow the Prague Spring to continue a prediction which came true in August as Warsaw Pact tanks rumbled into Czechoslovakia and Marchenko was once again sentenced to prison and then to exile the stronger Marchenko's desire to act became He became one of the founders of the influential Moscow Helsinki Group together with Andrei Sakharov and future leader Lyudmila Alexeyeva The group was founded in 1976 to monitor the Soviet Union's compliance with the human rights clauses of the Helsinki Final Act of 1975 the first act of the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe which sought to improve relations between the Communist bloc and the West He was arrested and jailed for the last time in 1980 for publishing his final book To Live Read moreRinat Akhmetshin – who claims he served in a counter-intelligence unit but never formally trained as a spy – told the Associated Press that he attended the meeting with Donald Trump Jr which was billed as part of a Russian government effort to boost Trump’s election campaign The latest revelation came as news reports suggested there were at least eight attendees at the meeting which occurred at Trump’s eponymous New York tower shortly after he effectively clinched the Republican presidential nomination The presence of additional participants contradicted Trump Jr’s assertion this week to the Fox News host Sean Hannity that all of the information about the meeting had been publicly disclosed revealed Samochornov’s identity during an appearance on MSNBC that raised new questions about the controversial meeting and its purpose Akhmetshin dismissed reports that he has ties to Russian intelligence agencies as a “smear campaign” but was described by the chairman of the Senate judiciary committee as an expert in “subversive political influence operations often involving disinformation and propaganda” this year In an interview with the AP, Akhmetshin said he had accompanied Veselnitskaya to Trump Tower in New York where they met an interpreter who also participated in the meeting in June 2016 He told the news agency he had learned about the meeting only that day Akhmetshin said Veselnitskaya brought with her a plastic folder with printed-out documents that detailed what she believed was the flow of illicit funds to the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Veselnitskaya presented the contents of the documents to the Trump associates and suggested that making the information public could help the Trump campaign ‘This could be a good issue to expose how the DNC is accepting bad money,’ Akhmetshin recalled her saying.” Donald Trump Jr and the Russia connection GuardianAccording to Akhmetshin Trump Jr asked Veselnitskaya if she had all the necessary evidence to supporting her claims But when Veselnitskaya replied that the Trump campaign would need do further research “They couldn’t wait for the meeting to end,” Akhmetshin told the AP adding that he did not know if Veselnitskaya’s documents were provided by the Russian government The meeting was also attended by Jared Kushner Akhmetshin said he recognised Manafort because they worked in “adjacent political circles” but never together He told the AP that the meeting was “not substantive” and he “actually expected more serious” discussion “I never thought this would be such a big deal The meeting had been brokered by Rob Goldstone a British music publicist whose clients include the Russian singer Emin Agalarov Thank you for your feedback.Asked about Akhmetshin’s presence told NBC News: “The person was described as a friend of Emin’s and maybe as a friend of Natalia’s .. He told me specifically he was not working for the Russian government and in fact laughed when I asked him that question.” Futerfas added: “I have absolutely no concerns about what was said in that meeting.” spokesman for Russian president Vladimir Putin told reporters on Friday: “We don’t know anything about this person.” Trump Jr and Veselnitskaya have claimed that the 20-minute meeting was dominated by the Magnitsky Act a 2012 US law that blacklists suspected Russian human rights abusers Putin halted American adoptions of Russian children ShowSergei Magnitsky was a Russian lawyer who investigated a massive $230m tax fraud in 2007.  Magnitsky was arrested by the same officials whom he had accused of covering up the racket and was imprisoned He died in jail after being denied medical treatment Russia accused him of committing the fraud himself and even put him on trial posthumously the Magnitsky Act was passed by Congress in 2012 banning entry to the US and freezing assets of officials believed to have been involved in Magnitsky's persecution and death Russia responded by banning a list of US citizens it deemed hostile to Russia and blocking the adoption of Russian children by US citizens – a controversial move that led critics to suggest the Kremlin was punishing Russia’s most vulnerable children.  chairman of the Senate judiciary committee as lobbying against the Magnitsky Act along with the firm Fusion GPS “which was also involved in the creation of the unsubstantiated dossier alleging collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians” 1:06President Trump defends his son during presser - videoGrassley wrote in a letter to the justice department: “It is particularly disturbing that Mr Akhmetshin and Fusion GPS were working together on this pro-Russia lobbying effort in 2016 in light of Mr Akhmetshin’s history and reputation Mr Akhmetshin is a Russian immigrant to the US who has admitted having been a ‘Soviet counterintelligence officer’ it has been reported that he worked for the GRU [military intelligence] and allegedly specializes in ‘active measures campaigns’ subversive political influence operations often involving disinformation and propaganda Mr Akhmetshin ‘is known in foreign policy circles as a key pro-Russian operator’ and Radio Free Europe described him as a ‘Russian “gun-for-hire” [who] lurks in the shadows of Washington’s lobbying world’ Grassley complained that both Akhmetshin and Fusion GPS had failed to register as foreign agents Akhmetshin “was even accused in a lawsuit of organizing a scheme to hack the computers of one his client’s adversaries” According to court documents filed with the New York supreme court in November 2015, which were first reported by the Daily Beast, a Russian mining company alleged that Akhmetshin hacked into its computer systems and stole private documents as part of an effort to target them in a smear campaign. The allegations were eventually withdrawn. Read moreSamochornov, the translator, portrayed himself as largely a bystander to the meeting. Although the interpreter would not confirm his attendance, citing nondisclosure agreements, he told the website HuffPost: “I’m a professional freelance interpreter and I can’t talk about any of my clients.” “This is my livelihood and I hope you can be sympathetic to the predicament I find myself in,” Samochornov added Samochornov has served as a translator for US government agencies His views on social media painted a picture of a progressive who has been supportive of single-payer healthcare and stricter gun laws Samochornov has indicated an apparent distaste for Republicans posting video clips critical of conservatives Friday’s revelations deepen the crisis at the White House after a tumultuous week. Emails released by Trump Jr show that he was told by Goldstone that the meeting was part of a Russian government attempt to interfere in the election, and that Trump Jr responded gleefully instead of alerting authorities Goldstone had told Trump Jr that the lawyer had damaging information about Hillary Clinton whose version of events has shifted multiple times says this failed to materialise and he wrapped up the conversation quickly Trump Jr failed to mention Akhmetshin’s presence in a series of statements and an interview this week in which he insisted he was being fully transparent the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee said the report about an alleged former Russian counter-intelligence officer being present adds another deeply disturbing fact about this secret meeting” He added: “Donald Trump Jr’s denial of any such meetings his misleading initial representation that it dealt only with adoptions – a statement evidently approved by the White House – and his later admission that the whole purpose of taking the meeting was to receive the support of the Russian government in the form of damaging information about Hillary Clinton paint a portrait of consistent dissembling and deceit when it comes to the campaign’s meetings with Russian officials and intermediaries.” a former senior adviser to the Clinton campaign living through a case study of crisis mismanagement The fact that every day we are learning something that is appalling is shameful A translator named Anatoli Samochornov was in the meeting between Donald Trump’s campaign team and two Russian lobbyists last year Samochornov was named on Friday by Rinat Akhmetshin a lobbyist who also attended the Trump Tower meeting Samochornov’s mother-in-law confirmed he was at the meeting in an exclusive interview with The Daily Beast at his home on Thursday morning “He wasn’t participating,” she said at his New York-area home Samochornov, an American citizen, has worked as a translator for Natalia Veselnitskaya the Russian lawyer who led the meeting with Donald Trump Jr Samochornov translated for Veselnitskaya while she represented a Russian defendant in a money-laundering case in federal court last year and accompanied her to Belgium to promote a film critical of a U.S A longtime colleague of Samochornov—who said she first heard from The Daily Beast he was in the meeting also attended by Trump and Paul Manafort—praised him Thursday morning as a top-notch translator Samochornov has a long track record of interpreting for governmental agencies and dignitaries including Russia’s leading human rights activist and the U.S in linguistics from the Institute of Foreign Languages in Nizhny Novgorod and an MBA from the University of Washington Samochornov seemed to dislike Republicans like Trump on social media he shared a meme about restarting America in “safe mode,” with free health care and without guns he shared a Rachel Maddow post critical of Karl Rove Samochornov’s work for Veselnitskaya extended outside of the courtroom Veselnitskaya formed a nonprofit group called the Human Rights Accountability Global Initiative Foundation The group’s stated purpose is to restart the adoptions of Russian children to the U.S Samochornov interpreted for Veselnitskaya at an aborted screening of an anti-Magnitsky Act documentary in Belgium Federal prosecutors claimed in court that Samochornov was an “officer” of Veselnitskaya’s group prosecutors and defense attorneys sparred over whether Samochornov should be allowed to serve as an interpreter for Denis Katsyv owner of Russian company Prevezon on trial for money laundering Defense attorneys argued that Katsyv would be more comfortable using a translator already familiar with his speech patterns while prosecutors argued that Samochornov’s familiarity with Veselnitskaya made him more akin to “a member of the defense team.” “He has apparently been engaged in lobbying efforts that seem to have some connection to at least the defendants’ lawyers in Washington,” assistant U.S he is the officer of a nongovernmental organization founded along with one of the defense lawyers It’s a little different from our interpreters.” The judge allowed Samochornov to interpret because he is certified to do so in the Southern District of New York Samochornov slammed his door closed when The Daily Beast returned to his home on Thursday evening —with additional reporting by Emma Kerr and Joanna Purpich Got a tip? The scenario seems like the start of a bad Marvel comic but it happens to shed light on our intuitions about radiation Particle accelerators allow physicists to study subatomic particles by speeding them up in powerful magnetic fields and then tracing the interactions that result from collisions By delving into the mysteries of the universe colliders have entered the zeitgeist and tapped the wonders and fears of our age this sounds like the plot of a disastrous science-fiction movie It came as no surprise when two people filed a lawsuit to stop the LHC from operating lest it produce a black hole powerful enough to destroy the world But physicists argued that the idea was absurd and the lawsuit was rejected the LHC detected the long-sought Higgs boson a particle needed to explain how particles acquire mass the LHC entered popular culture; it was featured on the album cover of Super Collider (2013) by the heavy metal band Megadeth and was a plot point in the US television series The Flash (2014-) the world of particle physics is so abstract that few understand its implications the study of particle physics is best described by chalkboard equations and squiggly lines called Feynman diagrams the Nobel laureate whose father Niels invented the Bohr model of the atom and his colleague Ole Ulfbeck have even gone as far as to deny the physical existence of subatomic particles as anything more than mathematical models several academic experts admitted that they had little idea what would happen if one were to stick a hand inside the proton beam at the LHC Professor Michael Merrifield put it succinctly: “That’s a good question Probably be very bad for you.” Professor Laurence Eaves was also cautious about drawing conclusions likely with a bit of British understatement Such thought experiments can be useful tools for exploring situations that can’t be studied in the laboratory unfortunate accidents yield case studies: opportunities for researchers to study scenarios that can’t be experimentally induced for ethical reasons Case studies have a sample size of one and no control group Ramachandran has pointed out in Phantoms in the Brain (1998) it takes only one talking pig to prove that pigs can talk an iron rod pierced through the head of the US railway worker Phineas Gage and profoundly changed his personality offering early evidence of a biological basis for personality a Soviet scientist named Anatoli Bugorski stuck his head in a particle accelerator Bugorski was checking malfunctioning equipment on the U-70 synchrotron—the largest particle accelerator in the Soviet Union—when a safety mechanism failed and a beam of protons traveling at nearly the speed of light passed straight through his head no other human being had ever experienced a focused beam of radiation at such high energy Although proton therapy—a cancer treatment that uses proton beams to destroy tumors—was pioneered before Bugorski’s accident the energy of these beams is generally not above 250 million electron volts (a unit of energy used for small particles) Bugorski might have experienced the full wrath of a beam with more than 300 times this much energy a harbinger of what would welcome Bugorski on the fateful day of his accident According to an interview in Wired magazine in 1997 Bugorski immediately saw an intense flash of light but felt no pain The young scientist was taken to a clinic in Moscow with half his face swollen Ionizing radiation particles such as protons wreak havoc on the body by breaking chemical bonds in DNA This assault on a cell’s genetic programming can kill the cell Because blood cells are produced in bone marrow many cases of radiation poisoning result in infection and anemia from losses of white blood cells and red blood cells radiation was concentrated along a narrow beam through the head rather than being broadly distributed from nuclear fallout as was the case for many victims of the Chernobyl disaster or the bombing of Hiroshima such as bone marrow and the gastrointestinal track But where the beam shot through Bugorski’s head it deposited an obscene amount of radiation energy hundreds of times greater than a lethal dose by some estimates giving one hemisphere of his head a strangely young appearance He suffered at least six generalized tonic-clonic seizures these are the seizures most frequently depicted in film and television involving convulsions and loss of consciousness Bugorski’s epilepsy is likely a result of brain tissue-scarring left by the proton beam It has also left him with petit mal or absence seizures far less dramatic staring spells during which consciousness is briefly interrupted There are no reports that Bugorski has ever been diagnosed with cancer though that is often a long-term consequence of radiation exposure Despite having nothing less than a particle accelerator beam pass through his brain and he successfully completed his doctorate after the accident And as frightening and awesome as the inside of a particle accelerator might be humanity has thus far survived the nuclear age The European Commission is at the forefront of promoting gender equality Its Joint Research Centre (JRC) is certainly a good example of this with women in scientific roles accounting for almost 40% of the total in January 2024 The number of female scientists has steadily increased in the last 4 years four JRC scientists who will guide us through their interdisciplinary fields and show how their research underpins EU policies Their work at the JRC supports EU policymakers in developing science-based policies that have a positive impact on citizens and society Dora works on technologies for health. She contributes to the development of a methodology to monitor the amount of microplastics in drinking water. This methodology supports the Drinking Water Directive and will help EU countries measure microplastics in tap water Dora also leads an exploratory research project called ‘PANGOLIN’ named after the animal who rolls up into a ball using its scales as a shell Just as pangolins are protected by their scales nanomedicine products are shielded by a coating that protects the particles the human body could recognise the particles and trigger an unwanted immune response This exploratory research project aims to develop a method to check the safety of nanomedicine products like vaccines and cancer treatment drugs working on a research field with medical applications is extremely rewarding It has a positive impact on global health and is a fast-growing field which keeps the work stimulating and challenging biology and physics are strongly intertwined,” she says you must remain receptive to knowledge from all scientific domains and never cease to be curious.”   JRC Nanobiotechnology Laboratory  Ana is a physicist working on biotechnologies for biomedical applications develops and implements technologies to help the EU prepare for new pandemics this research informs policymakers on technology gaps – for example the lack of real-time portable and affordable devices for identifying airborne pathogens – and helps them line up preparedness actions Ana works on bio-detection systems to monitor the presence of pathogens in the air These systems can check the quality of indoor air to help prevent the spread of viruses which is especially important in pandemics Ana is also leading an exciting new exploratory research project to develop 3D bioprinted cellular models to assess the safety of nanomedicines which are innovative medicines that exploit the power of nanotechnologies Ana and her team aim to create in vitro cell models that reproduce the complex architecture and functionality of human tissues they can study how our bodies could respond to different substances Using the same method with real patients’ own cells will contribute to personalised drug testing and treatment optimisation “Biotechnologies open up innovative solutions to health crises they were used to quickly develop the vaccine for Covid-19” I feel the science we do has a positive impact on policies and on society I enjoy working in the multicultural environment of the Commission because it allows me to collaborate not only with research experts policymakers and civil society representatives from all over the world There I really see that science has no borders.”   she works on ensuring that the chemicals we are all exposed to are safe we are all in contact with chemicals in clothes essential to prove that these chemicals are not toxic Raffaella evaluates whether the methods used to assess these chemicals are efficient Having standardised and validated methods means that they can be used across the EU and beyond Besides the positive impact on human health this research also protects the environment since chemicals can also be found in the water Chemicals have been traditionally tested on animals Raffaella studies a range of innovative approaches from methods that use human cells to methods that are computer-based These alternative methods are often more reliable and effective than animal testing and “The JRC is a unique place to work for a scientist: you can see the different stages of your research from the lab to the regulatory implementation and the impact on society,” Raffaella explains “You are exposed to different perspectives which offer you great learning opportunities.”  EU Reference Laboratory for alternatives to animal testing (EURL ECVAM)   specialised in renewable energies and solar photovoltaic panels She monitors the development and advancement of photovoltaic technology and analyses the EU’s competitiveness in this field She also works on an innovative application of photovoltaics which are solar panels installed on agricultural lands This is a more sustainable and efficient land use than the traditional ones since the same land can produce both crops and renewable energy at the same time Anatoli helps assess where the agrivoltaics could be installed and their realistic energy production potential taking into consideration factors such as the location existing land use as well as nature protection priorities This work underpins the EU solar energy strategy and helps the EU reach its solar energy targets. It also supports the EU’s rural development policy Anatoli also analyses what is required at regulatory level for such applications Her research at the JRC clearly shows how science contributes to EU policy I translate technical analyses into information that contributes to regulations and market assessments” “I love that what I do has a concrete and positive effect on our environment and society I’m glad I followed my dreams without listening to prejudices European Solar Test Installation   Photovoltaic Geographical Information System (PVGIS)  Clean Energy Technology Observatory  Everything you need to know ahead of the showdown I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Six months ago we were told that he may not be interested in joining the Islanders (subscription required) But here we are with Golyshev holding a one-year ELC (the max allowable under the NHL’s CBA) for the 20-21 season With the Russian forward joining the Isles this year I asked Isles fans if they had questions about the Russian prospect Here are some of those questions along with my answers From: Peter Schwartz This is a great question because it’s not that easy to answer. It’s pronounced Anatoly, but his name is spelled Анатолий in Russian so in English that should be Anatolii. But as Gillian Kemmerer pointed out it could have easily gone either way but seeing as how the Isles are officially going with Anatolii I’ve made the switch too From: Ted When I was trying to set up an interview with him during the season an interpreter was going to be used very basic and purely just enough for me to get by when I traveled there All that to say that his English might not be strong enough to conduct solo interviews but going from Russian to English isn’t easy at all I imagine he’ll use someone to assist him at the start there are a few Russian’s on the team who can help him with that From: Jason Remsbecker I can’t see him slotting into the lineup immediately It’s going to take him some time to earn the coach’s trust I can absolutely see him take a spot on the taxi squad and perhaps earn a conditioning loan to the AHL this year once he’s ready for game time It’s possible that he pushes his way up the depth chart and earns some time in the top-six down the road If he can lineup with skilled linemates he could absolutely put up points In his first 12 games on the year (largely spent playing with Datsyul) he scored six goals and provided four helpers A pace that would have seen him match his career-high of 44 points from 15-16 He scored 17 points over his next 41 games That’s a drop of 0.54 points-per-game or a loss of 22 points on the year From: Gary Waksman His best goal-scoring season at the KHL level was in 2015-16 where he scored 25 goals It was the only year he eclipsed 20 goals in a season From: Anthony When I project what he could be I use translation factors Translation factors are used to figure out how production in one league (like the KHL) would translate to the NHL Golyshev is a 36 point player at the NHL level to me He could certainly perform at a higher rate assuming he lines up with skilled linemates but I see him in popping in 30-40 points (at best) in the NHL but consider guys like Michael Dal Colle and Leo Komarov are scoring at an 18 and eleven-point pace over 82 games Golyshev could be a huge upgrade over either © 2025 Minute Media - All Rights Reserved The content on this site is for entertainment and educational purposes only Betting and gambling content is intended for individuals 21+ and is based on individual commentators' opinions and not that of Minute Media or its affiliates and related brands All picks and predictions are suggestions only and not a guarantee of success or profit If you or someone you know has a gambling problem crisis counseling and referral services can be accessed by calling 1-800-GAMBLER Golyshev has been in the system for years now. sometimes attend group training sessions which the Northern Ohio chapter holds on the first and third Mondays of each month At a recent training session in Strongsville walked through tunnels and spent time around firefighters and fire trucks Dogs also learned to listen to their puppy-raisers and obey commands even in distracting Phillips said 75 to 80 percent of the chapter’s puppies graduate compared with 55 to 60 percent across CCI in general The dogs are then paired up with people who have disabilities to work as service dogs “Toli legitimately has changed my life for the better,” Cantu said “It’s hard to imagine going back to life without him.” Cantu graduated with a degree in zoology and will now navigate a post-college world with help from Toli He praised Kent State for having a campus that is “very used to and very accommodating to service dogs Phillips said CCI has a breeding program in Santa Rosa where 125 to 150 former CCI dogs are bred for "service dog quality" traits—dogs that are calm and eager to please their humans Although it is difficult to say goodbye at the end of a puppy-raiser’s time with his or her dog but you know the dogs are going for a greater purpose,” Phillips said The great Russian novelists of the 19th century wrote what Henry James called "large baggy monsters" out of belief that "truth" was more important than artistic form The 20th-century Russian-Ukrainian writer A who renounced his Soviet identity (and surname Kuznetsov) after defecting to England in 1969 Yet he chose to subtitle Babi Yar, his classic non-fiction account of Ukraine's holocaust first published in a heavily censored xxx in 1966 poses the question: why and how did the unprecedented horror of the German occupation of Ukraine occur but no longer unfamiliar or historically remote unfortunately given what we now know about Russia's occupation of Ukraine since 24th February 2022 Escaping to London with the microfilm of his complete manuscript hidden in the lining of his jacket declaring that published Soviet author to be "a cowardly and conformist writer" and began a 20-year task of publishing the book as he always intended it to be read In this superb translation by the former Daily Telegraph journalist (and spy) David Floyd the restored material is printed alongside the previously redacted text cover image from a post-1991 Russian-language edition of Babi Yar) Anatoli was a 12-year-old child when he eyewitnesses the killing at Babi Yar committed not only by German soldiers but also by Ukrainian collaborators who had been brutalised physically and morally by decades of Bolshevik rule He revisits this back story as if to place the wartime genocide in historical context a chapter entitled "Cannibals" that was excised altogether by the Kremlin's censors begins boldly "The worst famine in Ukraine's long history occurred under Soviet rule in 1933 It is the first thing I can remember clearly in my life." A couple of pages on it becomes obvious why the KGB got so busy with its blue pencil Anatoli delivers an uncompromising judgment: "It was a man-made famine The peasants who resisted collectivisation had all their stores requisitioned The population of many villages starves to death which have the descriptive power of Gorky's My Childhood and as a result their only child grows up in Kyiv under the watchful eye of his maternal grandparents based on Anatoli's first-hand observations have the quality of reportage of the Ukrainian Jewish writer Vasily Grossman in Life and Fate perhaps the greatest novel ever written about war – better than War and Peace was actually an eyewitness to the conflict in question in Grossman's case the battles for Kyiv and Stalingrad the degradation and horror are so vividly described that the reader sometimes has to put Anatoli's book aside to pause the trauma and despair: one woman "did not see so much as feel the bodies falling from the ledge and the stream of bullets coming closer to her Beneath her was a sea of bodies covered in blood On the other side of the ravine she could just distinguish the machine-guns which had been set up there and a few German soldiers They had lit a bonfire and it looked as though they were making coffee on it." This is a book which was intended to be read as an historical document, or a warning from the past. Alas, that warning went unheeded, and was forgotten for half a century, and now we can't any longer read the book in the same way, because Ukraine is once again under an inhumane occupation (Some of the scenes described by Anatoli evoke the senseless massacre of civilians that I witnessed a year ago in another Kyiv suburb called Bucha.) Lenin supposedly remarked that "when we are ready to hang the capitalists they will sell us the rope." But in Anatoli's frightful exposure of wickedness the educated inhabitants of Kyiv are even more self-destructively in thrall to the dynamics of power he explores the mentality (not confined to the ex-USSR) that leads people to follow prevailing opinion even when it contradicts moral principles Working up his childhood notebooks and later journals Kuznetsov wanted to offer the reader "truth" instead of politburo prose He therefore included important documents in the text Several chapters consist entirely of German propaganda notices or actual newspaper cuttings including a football report on the so-called "Death Match" between Dynamo Kyiv and the German Army The result is a work of formal idiosyncrasy unprecedented even in the Russian tradition of formally idiosyncratic works It is a rediscovered masterpiece that must be read and never forgotten More information about text formats We urgently need financing to survive.
