I am a lifelong New Englander who writes historical romance and mysteries set in the late Victorian period
I don’t actually remember a time when I didn’t love writing
It was just something I did even as a little kid
Then at some point I must have realized that I could be an author when I grew up and here we are
I love writing strong-willed heroines and Minnie Harper
I think this book has a little bit of everything: humor
so there are some Mediterranean island vibes as well
I had wanted to write a mystery series about a widow who becomes an amateur detective for a long time
so for a while it was just a vague idea in the back of my head
But one day I read a snippet about British people holidaying on a very small Greek island and thought that would make a good setting for a book
Then I thought it could work for my mystery and the idea just snowballed from there
I chose to set the book on Corfu in part because I was inspired by the PBS series The Durrells in Corfu and the island’s history as a British protectorate
This is my first novel set entirely in first-person POV
and I especially loved being able to do a deep-dive into Minnie’s character
My biggest challenge currently is having enough time to work because I have a very busy preschooler
I’ve found that the best thing for me is to set a weekly word goal to work towards so I stay on track and meet my deadlines
One of my favorite sources to use when I’m researching are old guidebooks
They are filled with all kinds of useful details that can help set the scene as well as logistical things like travel times and modes of transportation
They also contain really great descriptions of sights and scenery that I can’t find anywhere else and show what kinds of things would be of interest to tourists during that time
See alsoQ&A: Zoraida Córdova & Natalie C. Parker, Editors of ‘Vampires Never Get Old’
I also love to find primary sources written by people who actually lived through whatever era I’m writing about, whether it’s diary entries, memoirs, or even newspaper articles. I find that there is often a marked difference between how we imagine people from the past and what they were actually like. I love discovering those points of commonality as well as the unexpected.
I am finishing up Minnie Harper #2 and then need to start plotting my next historical romance!
So many! Liana De La Rosa’s Gabriella and The Duke, Alexis Daria’s Along Came Amor, and Ashley Weaver’s final Electra McDonnell mystery One Final Turn and Sherry Thomas’ newest mystery, The Librarians.

Even if you’ve never experienced Easter on Corfu
We the locals always look forward to these special days
to the litanies and the processions of the funereal biers
to the music – which evolves over the course of Easter week from mournful marches to triumphant fanfares – and to all the incredible smells
a blend of heady wisteria and lilac with the aromas of baking “fougatsa” and “colombina” pastries
Thousands of people come together and contribute
to this spectacular phenomenon known as the Corfiot Easter
Our customs are deeply rooted in the Byzantine culture and the Greek Orthodox faith
but they are also profoundly influenced by the four-century presence of the Venetians and
who ruled the island briefly in the 19th century
its suburbs and the countryside to some extent
but they are centered on the same basic principles: a sense of continuity and community that drives mass participation
the bands of some 20 philharmonic orchestras
the island’s residents participate actively in all the big religious events
a place of honor is held by Saint Spyridon
who is the subject of grand processions on Palm Sunday and on the morning of Holy Saturday
All three of the town’s philharmonic orchestras take part in the Holy Saturday procession
from Franco Faccio’s “Amleto” and Vincenzo de Michelis’ “Calde Lacrime” to Beethoven’s “Eroica.” Once the saint’s sacred relics return to the church
the people of Corfu celebrate the “First Resurrection” with the joyful clamor of the “botides” or colorful clay pots that are thrown out of windows and smashed on the paving stones below – fulfilling the Biblical prophecy
The botides custom is a relatively recent one
though; what most Corfiots do in the privacy of their own homes is smash some old
Another feature of Corfu’s Easter that is unique to this island is that most of the churches hold the Resurrection litany on the morning of Easter Sunday rather than on the night of Holy Saturday
Each parish then takes to the streets in procession with its icon of the Resurrection
accompanied by ensembles from the island’s philharmonic bands
similar processions take place in most villages of the Corfiot countryside
The custom on Palm Sunday is to eat salted cod
using the broth in the “skordalia” garlic dip and the fish for battered croquettes
“Savoro” is another typical dish made both on Palm Sunday and on the Annunciation with small fish such as sardines
The preparation begins six to eight days in advance
rosemary and black raisins are then added to the oil and lightly sauteed
covered with the aromatic oil and left to marinate for six to eight days – after which they are ready to be eaten
Among the tastier and easier dishes eaten during the Holy Week fast are “manestra kolopibiri” (a spicy pasta dish with spaghetti and a sauce made with lots of olive oil
grated onion and chili pepper flakes) and “bourou-bourou” (a soup with maccheroncini pasta
There are also dishes using vegetables like cauliflower and cabbage mixed with pasta
One of my favorite salads during Easter is one made with sliced oranges
We dye our red eggs on Holy Thursday: one for each member of the household and one for the house itself
which we keep for the entire year for good luck
We also make our colombinas and fougatsas on the same or the previous day
The dough resembles that of classic Greek “tsoureki” bread
but it is much firmer and includes bergamot as well as mastic flavoring
The colombina is shaped like a dove (hence its name
as colomba means dove in Italian) and is decorated with a red egg and colorful feathers
I remember my Aunt Mimi serving it instead of bread for several days after Easter
before the church service for Christ’s Descent from the Cross
I remember everyone going to church in mourning when I was a child
We don’t set the table on that day and eat – usually standing up – simple things like a few olives
a dollop of fish roe paste and a few boiled artichokes
The typical Holy Week desserts we make at home or purchase from a pasty shop are “kaltsounia” and “kantilia,” both pastries made with fruit and nuts
We usually break the fast after the First Resurrection and the breaking of the clay pots on the morning of Holy Saturday
this is when they would slaughter lambs and use their blood to paint a cross on the lintel above every house
but I can still remember the sound of the lambs crying in the streets of Corfu
we dye more eggs and get to work preparing the “tsilichourda” for dinner
here in Corfu we don’t make a “mageiritsa” stew out of the lamb or goat offal
we chop the belly and the intestine finely and boil them in water
garlic and onion and then deglazing the mixture with wine
Add the chopped liver 10 minutes before the dish is ready and a generous dose of fresh lemon juice
we tend to prefer egg-lemon soup with boiled rooster
This is to spare our stomachs from a heavy meal after the 40-day fast
We save the roasted lamb and potatoes for Easter Monday

THIS is the dramatic moment a Brit was carried off a Ryanair flight by cops - after a mid-air brawl forced the plane to divert
Stunned passengers on the Corfu-bound jet watched in disbelief as Italian police stormed the aircraft and marched the woman away
Footage obtained by the Manchester Evening News shows the woman being carried - by legs and arms - off the aircraft by officers
She can also be seen struggling to break free from police as they escort her to the police car
decided to move closer in the middle of the flight which departed from Manchester Airport at 5.30pm on Tuesday
with reports claiming the duo became “disruptive” - sparking a fight that left cabin crew no choice but to call in the authorities
where local cops boarded the plane and removed the pair
The plane landed in Corfu several hours late
A spokesperson for Ryanair said: "This flight from Manchester to Corfu (April 29) was forced to divert to Bologna after two passengers became disruptive onboard.
who met the aircraft upon landing at Bologna and removed these two disruptive passengers before this flight continued to Corfu later that same night
"Ryanair has a strict zero tolerance policy towards passenger misconduct and will continue to take decisive action to combat unruly passenger behaviour
ensuring that all passengers and crew travel in a safe and respectful environment
It comes as another passenger was tackled to the ground by flight crew after she tried to break into the cockpit
Passengers on board the New York-bound American Airlines flight watched in confusion as staff scuffled with the woman and restrained her
Footage from inside the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner showed the cockpit door wide open while the plane was still at Brazil's Sao Paulo airport
Flight attendants can be seen struggling to get the door closed before a woman makes an odd intervention by trying to storm the cockpit
The smartly-dressed passenger confronts the staff
The crew member can be heard telling the first-class passenger: "Get out

A Ryanair flight en route to Corfu was forced to divert to Italy after two “disruptive” passengers needed to be removed from the plane
Flight FR2100 left Manchester Airport on Tuesday, 29 April, at 5.30pm for a three-and-a-half-hour flight to Corfu
However, the plane had to change its course last minute and diverted to Bologna after two passengers became disruptive onboard
Police met the Boeing 737 on arrival and removed the disruptive passengers from the plane
The flight then continued its journey onward to Corfu that night
Passengers did not arrive until 1.47am local time
around three hours after they were supposed to land
There were reports that two passengers were involved in a fight on board, the Manchester Evening News reports
but later moved seats to sit next to one another
Footage obtained by the publication shows a woman being carried off the plane by police officers and was attempting to resist them
shows her being carried to a police car at the gate
A spokesperson for Ryanair told The Independent: “This flight from Manchester to Corfu (29 April) was forced to divert to Bologna after two passengers became disruptive onboard
The airline added it had a “strict zero tolerance policy towards passenger misconduct and will continue to take decisive action to combat unruly passenger behaviour
The incident came less than a week after Ryanair customers travelling from Agadir
to Manchester witnessed disruption from a “drunken and aggressive passenger”
the 177 passengers found themselves stranded overnight on the Algarve after Ryanair said the UK Civil Aviation Authority would not permit a replacement aircraft to take off
After police removed the disruptive passenger
the aircraft was refuelled to continue the journey to Manchester
a technical issue was then found that required the attention of an engineer
Ryanair DAC chief executive Eddie Wilson told The Independent: “It’s utter bull**** that people were put into hotels last night.”
which flies routes that do not serve points in the European Union and was set up after Brexit to allow flights between the UK and countries outside the EU
A Ryanair UK engineer was not available in Faro
offered to provide an identical aircraft and crew to fly the passengers home
A UK Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson said: “We encourage UK operators to create strong resilience plans for when planes have to be grounded to minimise the impact on passengers
“These plans need to be consistent with the legal framework that applies to UK aviation following EU Exit
which requires UK-based companies to have sufficient UK registered aircraft to operate their schedule
“Ryanair has been well aware of this position for a considerable period of time
Ryanair UK has chosen to operate a flight schedule that requires 18 aircraft
but has only allocated 15 aircraft to its UK registered business to fulfil this schedule
“Ryanair has prioritised the placement of aircraft within their other EU based business over the UK
leaving UK passengers at a higher risk of disruption.”

Akrotiri Beach Resort Hotel would be well advised to carry some proof of age — it doesn’t look anything like it’s 50 years
This is a hotel that has clearly been cared for over the decades by its family owners
with lots of floor polish and regular dashes of paint
Ranged up the steep slope of a hillside on the west coast of Corfu
the property has a slightly topsy-turvy feel
with the entrance on the hotel’s fourth floor
It all makes for a confusing floor numbering system
but once you’ve got your head around that you can spend your time lazing at the pool or sunbathing on a secluded ledge specially cut into the cliffside
Score 8/10There are 125 rooms — standards on the floors below reception and superiors on the two floors above
The sizes are much of a muchness (all offer a decent amount of space) so the difference comes from what’s through the window
with superior rooms offering wilder sea views and standards looking over the public beach
Rooms are simply styled with wood-effect flooring
whitewashed walls and muted furnishings of duck-egg blues; each has a balcony
but if you want more sunbathing elbow room
there are 11 rooms with private decks (six of them with Jacuzzis)
Bathrooms have been freshly renovated and have wet-room showers
wooden countertops and stone-coloured tiling
Food and drinkScore 8/10 As the clock ticks towards 7pm
there tends to be a rapid exodus from the poolside as guests hurry to spruce themselves up and snag a table on the terrace of the main buffet restaurant
daily changing spread of hot and cold dishes — among the (many) options on one evening
grilled meats and vegetables and a station for freshly prepared omelettes and other egg dishes
If you’d prefer a more intimate evening meal
the adjacent à la carte restaurant serves Greek and international cuisine
with a particular focus on seafood (the grilled fish filleted at your table with a theatrical flourish by the waiting staff)
Greek and Mediterranean dishes and the like — are available either from the poolside Calypso pool bar or the Amo Ammo beach bar
which perches on a lick of sand above the public beach
The staff are certainly kept busy with laying on the varied offerings
but you’ll find them helpful and attentive

Corfu was one of the first mainstream Greek vacation destinations
Surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Ionian sea, the island has a long and rich history and boasts impeccable architecture – with Venetian
French and British influences – lush greenery
a versatile coastline with world-class beaches
Plan your visit with our first-timer's guide to Corfu
The Mediterranean climate makes Corfu a year-round destination
with each season offering a unique mix of relaxation
The high season (June to September) is hot and busy
and the island’s tourist machine runs at full speed
with holidaymakers flocking to Corfu in the hundreds of thousands
itʻs a good time to experience the island’s true colors
interact with the locals and enjoy a truly authentic Greek experience
is the best time to visit for an extraordinary cultural experience
A week of sanctity and devoutness is followed by the triumphant mayhem of church bells and clay pots thrown from balconies and breaking on the alleys’ cobblestones below
A thunderous cannonade from the fort is mixed with the sublime music of the island’s 18 – no less – philharmonic orchestras
creating an overwhelming atmosphere and celebrating the triumph of life over death
The local carnival celebrations in February resemble those of Venice
and are a perfect opportunity for partying and all-out reveling
whether it is for a long weekend or a full two-week vacation
is the perfect base if your time is limited
you can lose yourself in the spectacular alleyways and piazzas
the island's lush nature and world-class beaches offer a variety of different things to do
ranging from outright relaxation to highly charged adventure
Ioannis Kapodistrias is Corfu’s international airport (named after the first governor of Greece who was born on the island), and there are many daily flights to and from Athens
a continuous stream of chartered flights makes the airport one of the busiest in the country
There are daily ferry connections between Corfu and Igoumenitsa on the mainland and, during the summer months, the Italian cities of Brindisi, Bari and Angona. There are multiple daily connections to the other Ionian islands and Saranda, Albania
City buses (blue) and intercity KTEL (green) reach even the most remote villages and beaches of the island
with extra services during the peak months
Plenty of taxis offer a more flexible and comfortable
the best way to experience Corfu is to hire a car; plenty of quality rental companies operate on the island
even if you plan to stay on Corfu for a few days
Even on the shortest stay on the island, make time for a stroll in the labyrinthine kantounia (alleys) of the Old Town. Stop for a leisurely coffee or a delicious kumquat liquer, made with the celebrated local "golden orange," along the Liston, the magnificent pedestrian arcade located on Greece’s largest public square, the Spianada
Achilleion Palace is a majestic building once home to Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sissy) and Kaiser Wilhelm II
Although the interior is undergoing restoration and is closed to the public
its marvelous gardens and panoramic views of the town and the island are well worth a visit
Wander the Old Fortress (Palaio Frourio)
a magnificent Venetian construction built on a rocky peninsula — the old Byzantine capital’s site — that dominates the eastern part of the Old Town
For nature-loving and adventurous types, the Corfu Trail is a more than 200km (124-mile) route crossing the entire island from south to north
It passes through villages both inland and on the coast
where intrepid trekkers wishing to complete the trail can refuel and rest overnight
any part of the trail is a rewarding acquaintance with the island’s pristine nature
Corfu’s 217km (135-mile) coastline boasts countless stunning beaches
and it is impossible to visit them all during a single stay
There is a perfect match for every taste and preference
ranging from long sandy stretches to tiny pebbly bays and overcrowded cosmopolitan spots to deserted coves
and Ipsos are just some of the island's best beaches
Romantic souls will absolutely adore the Canal d'amour
a psammite (sandstone) fjord with a wonderful
Legend has it that couples who swim in the canal stay in love forever
Bring a diving mask with a snorkel and arrive early in the morning to secure a spot on the beach
The highlight of my Corfu vacation is taking a cruise to some of the island's most beautiful and remote corners
the island’s superb beaches can get extremely busy
so hiring a private small boat (no need for a professional license) is the ultimate escape from the crowds
There are dozens of otherwise inaccessible bays and secluded small beaches
especially along the northeastern coast between Kalami and Kasiopi
and a day out there in the vast blueness with the bright sky above and the crystalline Ionian sea beneath is a treat for the senses
On a budget: Check out Yaliskari Beach Studios. You need your own transport to reach this old-school hideaway with balconied untis above a sweet little beach
Spend more: The modern Melina Bay Hotel sits below the castle with stunning views of Kassiopi's harbor front
The snug nautical-themed rooms have excellent amenities
Spend the most: Enjoy the city-center at Bella Venezia. A neoclassical villa on a peaceful street that features compact but well-equipped rooms and a flowery breakfast terrace.
Corfu cuisine boasts several mouthwatering recipes that visitors can savor exclusively on the island. Top among them are sofrito, a garlicky veal dish cooked in wine; pastitsadha, local pasta with chicken or beef seasoned with myriad spices; and bourdeto, fish cooked in a red spicy sauce.
Unspoiled by tourism may sound like a meaningless cliché, but the three remote Diapontia islands of Othoni, Erikousa and Mathraki on the northernmost corner of Greece have been unduly overlooked by travel guides and visitors. Serene sandy beaches, small villages and tranquil footpaths render the islands the perfect getaway from the bustling crowds. There are regular daily connections by ferry, caïque (or skiff boat) and private mini-cruise.
As in every other hugely popular destination, accommodations and service prices peak during the busy months. However, Corfu offers choices for every budget, from backpackers to high-end travelers.
Public transport is very affordable, and there are plenty of casual local tavernas that won’t break the budget. Of course, the sky is the limit for those who can enjoy a luxurious stay with every possible desire catered for. Here is a guideline to daily costs in Corfu.
Basic room for two: €60 to €100 (US$68 to US$113)
Self-catering apartment: (including Airbnb): €90 to €150 (US$102 to US$170)
Intercity public transport ticket: €2 to €5 (US$2.27 to US$5.67, depending on distance)
Dinner for two: €50 to €80 (US$56 to US$90)
Beer at the bar: €5 to €8 (US$5.67 to US$9.08)
Self-drive boats: (half day): €80 to €120 in low season (US$90 to US$136); €100 to €150 in high season (US$113 to US$170)
Private mini-cruises with a skipper: €100 to €150 (US$113 to US$192) per hour.

He now enjoys a peaceful life with his dog
I was 41 years old when I finally was able to leave Los Angeles to travel
much like the two-month backpacking trip I had taken around Europe after I graduated college
It had never felt right to leave him behind because he was so focused on taking care of me
So after he passed I finally planned a big trip
My first stop would be Corfu
My father's parents were born there and our family still had a small apartment which had been sitting vacant for years
It was free and centrally located for the adventure I had planned
My only trip to Corfu had been on my backpacking trip
There couldn't be that much to do on an island; I would stay only long enough to buy a motorcycle so I could tour around Eastern Europe
Things didn't quite work out that way
The bike I bought wound up needing major engine work
and I wouldn't get it back until the very last week of my stay
(If the guy you're buying a motorcycle from shows up doing a wheelie and the bike is leaking oil and covered in death metal stickers
I was "stuck" on Corfu for the whole rest of the summer

is tolerated by the locals at the very end under the clay cliffs
That clay when mixed with sea water makes a popular mud treatment which is supposed to detoxify and rejuvenate the skin
I'm not sure about the dermatological effects though I do know it's joyful fun to run naked on the beach covered from head to toe in mud
I fell in love with Arillas and the colorful
I spent many days making the hour-and-a-half round trip on my little rental scooter to visit
Gradually the stress from my routine in Los Angeles melted away and my priorities began to shift
Money and the constant stress to earn it began to seem so much less important than family and the simple pleasures of life
VA to spend more time with my family and to help care for my niece and nephew and later my aging father
The following summer I was back in Corfu for another three months and decided to make a habit of summering here
I submitted my application for Greek citizenship in 2013 and finally got my passport two and half years later
I celebrated my new status by renting a two-bedroom house overlooking the Ionian Sea for six months
I had just moved in when I met a charming dog on the beach I named Buster
He brought me a stone and insisted on a game of fetch
and only after the third "no," did he retreat back to the beach
I kept looking back but didn't see him
Two minutes later Buster came trotting by and acted surprised to see me
just as if he had been on his way to some important dog business and it was a total coincidence he ran into me
Without any plan to stay permanently I was not going to take on the responsibility of dog ownership; but Buster appeared to be quite capable of taking care of himself
So he followed me around all summer even chasing me down the street when I went out on my motorcycle and nearly keeping pace for up to two miles at a time
The following years I continued spending half my time in Arillas and each time I returned I was greeted by the most intense tail wagging as I was reunited with Buster
In 2021 I found a house to rent 300 yards from the beach for just €500 ($542) per month and finally decided to live here full-time last year
My life here feels a million miles away from the stresses and strains of life in the US
Buster and I go the beach a few times each day and especially enjoy sunsets
getting "stuck" on this island paradise was the best mistake I ever made
Wrapped in stone, this summer residence in Corfu, Greece
has been designed to emphasize the connection between the building and its natural surroundings
Initially envisioned by Tony Wynbourne and developed with Athens-based studio Georgios Apostolopoulos and Makis Gisdakis
the concept seeks to merge contemporary design with the local landscape
Unobstructed 180-degree views to the sea and surrounding landscape are prioritized for each room
as the Corfu House’s layout is oriented carefully along an east-west axis
symbolically rooting the villa within its environment
a heated pool extends from the master bedroom
blending with the rocky terrain and fostering a serene
fluid connection between indoors and outdoors
is designed to visually merge with the distant sea
Corfu House’s exterior is made out of locally sourced stone, hand-shaped by local stone technicians. The stone blends the structure with its natural context and provides a timeless aesthetic in conjunction with modern windows and details. Internally, the architects have divided the villa into a ground
The ground floor is separated into two primary zones
The lower ground floor meanwhile has four additional bedrooms with bathrooms and a small kitchenette
a cavernous area with exposed natural rocks offers a sense of calm and quiet
The interior design is intentionally minimalist
with contemporary detailing and understated joinery
This quiet elegance allows the views to become the main focal point
while the simplicity of the interiors creates a calm
neutral backdrop that highlights the home’s natural surroundings and views
Corfu House enjoys idyllic views of the sea
exposed natural rocks at the cavernous area offer a sense of calm and quiet
unobstructed 180-degree views to the sea and surrounding landscape are prioritized for each room
the interiors embrace simplicity and minimalism

Penguin Modern Classics will publish Gerald Durrell’s "beloved" accounts of his childhood spent in Corfu to mark the centenary of his birth
The Corfu trilogy – which comprises My Family and Other Animals; Birds
Beasts and Relatives; and The Garden of the Gods – will be published on 2nd January 2025
The books recount the Durrells’ move from Bournemouth to the island of Corfu to start a new life
and stand as "a timeless account of an idyllic childhood and an uproarious portrait of the English abroad"
Durrell’s widow and honorary director of Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust
said: “Gerry’s three accounts of his childhood in Corfu are equally beguiling
although the first was written more than 20 years later and the last more than 20 years after that
Gerry had the power of total recall when it came to Corfu
and no wonder – he often said that the four years with his animals and family there were the happiest of his life
Read the books and I know the magic will rub off on you.”
added: “The adventures of young Gerry and his memorable supporting cast of family and animals have enchanted generations of readers
and will continue to delight and inspire for generations to come
and we couldn’t be more delighted to publish them.”

which dated to the late 1700s and had been lying empty and decaying for years
There was red tape to navigate (it was a protected monument) and a lot of money to spend in returning the building to its former glory — indeed

its wooden handrail so polished you feel guilty touching it
with wood floors and an effortless style that you know can only be achieved with huge effort
The attention to detail is a wonder to behold

the drawers felt-lined and the air-conditioning expensively silent

has been recently completed on the Greek island as a collaboration between architects Tony Wynbourne
Georgios Apostolopoulos and engineer Makis Gisdakis
A new Corfu house, designed as a holiday home by architects Tony Wynbourne, Georgios Apostolopoulos and engineer Makis Gisdakis, balances the tightrope between the Greek island's local vernacular forms and materials, and a sense of 21st-century minimalist architecture
located on a hill facing the calm waters of the surrounding blue sea
was conceived to make the most of its 180-degree vistas and natural environment
The architecture team worked on embedding the home into its land – taking into account the plot's rocky outcrops
which have been incorporated in the design
and preserving a mature olive tree found on site
The plant now serves as an important 'anchor' to the ancient grounds around the villa
The main body of the home is made out of hand-shaped
which has been crafted by local specialist technicians and craftspeople
It frames swathes of glazing which ensure the views – available from every bedroom and main room in the house – become a protagonist throughout
The internal arrangement is spread across three levels – a main ground floor and mezzanine
and a lower ground that has been tucked into the site's slope
A primary bedroom is located in the home's west wing
while living spaces are placed in the east
Further guest bedrooms are on the level below
which also contains a cave-like space for contemplation
The interior approach was led by a minimalist sensibility
understated joinery and fixtures elevate the interior through attention to detail
The architecture team writes in its statement: 'This quiet elegance allows the views to become the main focal point
The simplicity of the interiors creates a calm
neutral backdrop that highlights the home’s natural surroundings and views.'

Lorna Riley gets a masterclass in Mediterranean cooking during a unique visit to Corfu
the original Greek salad - not that one that uses lettuce or cabbage!” Our host’s nose wrinkles in disgust at this culinary crime while chef Maria prepares our lunch under the welcome shade of citrus trees
the only Greek stop on our two-week Viking Mediterranean Odyssey cruise and it’s a whirlwind one
we’ve opted for an organised excursion called Traditional Flavours and Modern Cuisine of Corfu - a chance to wine
I’ve already noted as we docked early that morning that Corfu bears little resemblance to the whitewashed Greece I’ve come to expect on previous visits to Mykonos and Crete
with morning light bouncing off pastel buildings; the first of several surprises that this sickle-shaped island
around six times the size of our own Waiheke
Corfu’s Unesco-listed Old Town is shaped by Venetian
as the island has been colonised several times during its documented 3000-year history
It’s a network of cobbled streets and historic landmarks that reflect this diverse past
We begin our tour walking along Liston Promenade
where arched walkways lined with cafés offer a prime spot to soak up the local atmosphere
an ornate music pavilion; and in another surprise
a pristine cricket pitch: the only one of its kind in Greece and a legacy to one-time British rule
a 15th-century Venetian stronghold with panoramic views of both town and sea
The fortress stands as a testament to the island’s strategic importance and its history of resisting invasion
Corfu being one of the few parts of Greece never conquered by the Ottomans
when Gerald “My Family and Other Animals” Durrell was one of my favourite authors; gorgeously landscaped Bosketo Garden has been renamed Durrell Garden
with a plaque and busts dedicated to brothers Lawrence and Gerald
who lived here for several years in the 1930s and whose writings of their beloved island have helped popularise this particular slice of paradise
It’s thanks to them that I know Corfu is home to many beautiful animals and birds
including (perhaps surprisingly) pelicans and flamingoes
Just north of here is the Roman-style Palace of Saints Michael and George (Palaia Anaktora), featuring a large statue of a former British Governor outside; in another surprise, the building houses a Museum of Asian Art
unique across Southern Europe in its scope and in the richness of its Chinese and Asian exhibits
Unfortunately the collection is so large (15 rooms
taking in over 12,000 artefacts) that time does not allow a visit today
but a mental note is made to return when we pass this way again
A small window of free time is spent in our favourite way: browsing the shops for mementoes (colourful fridge magnets
before a trio of musicians in traditional Corfiot clothing entertain as we sip dark
thick “ellinikos kafes” and watch the world go by
Corfu is not as busy as other ports we’ve visited (it is
shoulder season) but the warm sun is shining in the azure sky and to me
Our small group is then transported north by coach
just past the town of Limmi to Kommeno Bay
where we are welcomed to the Villa of the Roses
for a hands-on introduction to Corfiot cuisine
perched on a hill looking out to the Ionian Sea and the shores of Albania beyond
and as the weather is so delightful our cooking lesson takes place in the citrus grove beside the pool
Over glasses of local aniseed-flavoured aperitif ouzo we meet chef Maria
Instead cucumbers are semi-peeled to stripe the skin and add visual interest
then tossed with chunks of large Roma tomatoes
A simple drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil (locally made in this case) and red wine vinegar
But no Corfiot lunch would be complete without tzatziki
it can be a spread - normally we serve it alongside meats: barbecue
Maria’s hands a blur as she whips up a large bowl
that we hungrily tuck into using large chunks of bread as Maria moves on to making our main dish of moussaka
potato and eggplant dish synonymous with Greek cuisine
we make a toast - “Kali sas oreks!”- and tuck into our feast
which concludes with a citrus polenta cake served with sides of jam and yoghurt
Kumquat literally translates as “golden orange”
and the bright syrup is a specialty of the island
its bittersweet citrus flavour reflecting Corfu’s unique agricultural heritage
and more than one of us is converted to this new flavour as we sip and chat
but today we have shared the universal language of food appreciation and smiles along with genuine gratitude pass between us as we make our farewells
we watch Corfu’s terracotta rooftops fading into the distance
and cuisine has offered a truly memorable glimpse into Corfiot heritage
Whether through its well-preserved Old Town
Corfu stands apart as a destination as rich in character and history as it is in food
Place the grated cucumber in a colander and sprinkle with salt
mixing so all the cucumber pieces are coated
Place the colander over a bowl so the salt can draw the moisture out of the cucumber
Allow the cucumber to drain for 15-30 minutes
then squeeze all of the moisture out using your hands
Combine the other ingredients in a medium mixing bowl before stirring in the drained

Gerald Durrell was born in India in 1925
but soon turned his attention to Corfu after his family relocated there in 1935 to join his oldest brother
Gerald’s love for the nature and animals on the sunny Greek island is captured in his famous books
and how this has inspired generations of travellers to explore the destination
Alkyna Lifestyle Beach Resort is the ideal place to celebrate Gerald’s legacy thanks to its proximity to the key spots from the Durrells’ Corfu
Alkyna Lifestyle Beach Resort is the newest adults-only hotel to be added to the Ella Resorts portfolio and is set for a May 2025 opening
Located beside a striking cliffside backdrop with captivating sea views
the property offers a redefined holiday experience with a choice of 349 rooms
and villas with private pools that invite hours of relaxation after a day of exploring the island
The hotel is perfectly situated near some of the Durrells’ favourite spots in Corfu
features lovingly in Gerald’s books and is less than a 30-minute drive from Alkyna Lifestyle Beach Resort
visitors can spend the day winding through bustling streets past historic architecture and welcoming market stalls towards the famous Liston promenade and Spianada Square
a charming garden where bronze busts of Gerald and Lawrence Durrell can be admired alongside views of the Old Fortress and the sea
is an elegant summer estate and the former residence of the British commissioner
Gerald and Lawrence would often visit the property to write and explore the grounds
visitors can savour the serenity of the lush gardens and enjoy a glimpse into the past of the storied estate
a small village perched on a hillside and home to the Strawberry Pink Villa (which got its name from Gerald’s books)
where the family lived when they first got to the island
but visitors can explore the local landscape and beaches while looking out for wildlife as Gerald so enjoyed
Guests of Alkyna Lifestyle Beach Resort keen to visit the filming locations of The Durrells are also in luck
A 10-minute drive from the hotel are the inland villages of Kouramades and Sinarades
where narrow streets give way to traditional Corfiot architecture and colourful houses draped with vibrant flowers
For the most part still untouched by tourism
these communities invite authentic exploration before a refreshing drink at a local taverna
Slightly further afield but equally worth a visit is Gastouri (on the east of the island) and Paramonas (on the west)
where the cast of The Durrells enjoyed filming under the sun
While there are countless spots around Corfu that evoke the charm and adventure of Gerald Durrell’s time on the island
guests of Alkyna Lifestyle Beach Resort can honour his legacy simply by immersing themselves in the island’s natural beauty
it’s not hard to see why the naturalist fell in love with Corfu all those years ago
Guests of Alkyna Lifestyle Beach Resort can become immersed in the slow way of life through the traditional experiences on offer at the hotel
guests can take to the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea and learn the art of fishing onboard a Greek boat while also learning to cook the fresh catch
Sticking with Greek tradition and the timelessness that was so often mentioned by Gerald
visitors can discover the world of soap-making while exploring the Patounis Svonnerie
Those who prefer olive oil over soap can experience sun-kissed olive groves
traditional mills and sample the unique tasting notes and food pairings

which has been attributed to wood-eating insects rather than the Xylella fastidiosa bacterium
Local olive oil producers are concerned about the spreading disease
which is affecting olive groves on the island and causing branches and twigs to wither and die
the northernmost Greek island in the Ionian Sea
which leaves parts of the trees completely desiccated
The phenomenon has so far been observed in small pockets in the island’s central and northern producing regions
The local department of agriculture sent specimens of the infected olive tree branches to a specialized laboratory in Athens, which ruled out the possibility that the dieback was caused by a strain of the Xylella fastidiosa bacterium
the local department said the lab analysis found no presence of the Xylella fastidiosa bacterium and attributed the twig dieback to wood-eating insects
“No infection by the Xylella fastidiosa bacterium has been observed in the olive groves of Corfu,” the department said
“According to the macroscopic assessment of [our] agronomists
the drying of the tree branches is due to the action of wood-eating insects
especially the polyphagous moth Zeuzera pyrina.”
the risk of the Xylella fastidiosa pathogen entering our country remains
any importation of uncertified plant material should be avoided,” they added
Corfiot olive oil producers confirmed that the symptoms indicate a different infection than that caused by the Xylella bacterium
“The phenomenon started about two years ago,” said local producer Dimitris Andriotis
“I have seen what Xylella does to olive groves in Italy
and I can say that what we are experiencing here is not Xylella.”
The Xylella fastidiosa bacterium, which has emerged as a global threat to olive production, is associated with Olive Quick Decline Syndrome (OQDS)
a disease of olive trees that causes dieback of leaves
rendering the trees unproductive and eventually dead
While Xylella fastidiosa has caused extensive damage to olive groves in southern Italy and other olive oil-producing regions
Greek olive groves have remained unaffected
is a white insect spotted with black rings that can grow up to five centimeters long
The moth’s larvae burrow into the branches of olive and other fruit trees and ultimately kill the trees if left untreated
a professor of agricultural entomology at the University of Crete
argued that a different pest is most likely causing the dieback of tree branches in Corfu’s olive groves
“My first impression is that the culprit is the olive bark midge and not the leopard moth,” Roditakis told Olive Oil Times after examining photos of the affected olive trees
the infected twigs and branches should be removed to be burned or crushed next spring.”
The larvae of the olive bark midge (Resseliella oleisuga) develop under the olive tree bark and feed on the plant tissue
The infested twigs and branches may wither and die if not treated properly
Roditakis added that some field research is required in Corfu’s olive groves to pinpoint the exact cause of the branch dieback
Scientists have identified more than 100 olive tree pathogens
only a few can cause significant economic losses to olive farming
Olive tree infestations in the Mediterranean basin by the olive bark midge have been particularly prevalent since 2010
and some scientists have linked the problem to a warming climate
Andriotis said the disease is becoming more widespread
“Some of my olive trees are already affected,” he said
“The same has happened to other producers in the area
but some branches and twigs are completely withered.”
“It is a concerning event that needs to be dealt with,” he added
“None of the island’s older olive growers remember anything similar to what happened in the past.”

The two-bedroom house in Acharavi on the north coast that they bought three years ago has some freshly painted Santorini-blue shutters but the couple overlook the 390 sq ft concrete shell of their swimming pool

“The problem is that we’ve not been around
We could see from our CCTV that the builders disappeared all winter.”
A serious taxpayer extortion scandal has been uncovered on the island of Corfu following an investigation by the Hellenic Police (ELAS) in collaboration with the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE)
This case comes just months after a similar corruption incident was exposed at the Halkida tax office (DOY) on Evia island
officers from the police’s internal affairs unit dismantled a criminal organization suspected of engaging in extortion and bribery involving public officials
conducted by the police’s “incorruptibles” in conjunction with AADE
including the deputy director of the Corfu tax office
The suspects are accused of targeting taxpayers
mainly business owners with unpaid tax debts
and using their criminal network to extort payments from them
is believed to have approached the victims to initiate the extortion
Authorities have so far connected the suspects to at least ten extortion cases
have revealed critical details about the network’s operations
The accused are scheduled to appear before a prosecutor and an investigating judge later on Friday to provide their statements
Finance Minister Kostis Hatzidakis emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption
As we saw in the regrettable Halkida case a few months ago
the Ministry of Finance will not tolerate corruption within its ranks
and it has once again responded decisively in Corfu,” Hatzidakis said in a statement
