The student-faculty showcase honored the life and impact of late designer Virgil Abloh
On Friday, Nov. 8, Edessa School of Fashion hosted its annual Haute List student-faculty fashion production. This year’s theme, “VUR-JUHL,” honored the life, legacy, and impact of the late designer Virgil Abloh
The rotunda of the Central Library served as a multi-level runway
with its historic architecture providing the perfect backdrop for a parade of garments from 24 student and faculty designers across a range of disciplines
Lighting by ‘LaserBob’ Mullins transformed the marble pillars and gold moldings into an electrifying visual landscape
A Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra flutist played airy melodies
and the gospel choir from Christian Faith Church joyfully chanted to close out the show
Both live performances added to the dynamism of the space and transported 350 audience members to a world of Edessa’s creation.
In addition to the diverse collections from students and faculty
presented a collection featuring custom shoes designed by Keven Ringgold
The shoes were inspired by Virgil Abloh’s design philosophy
which focused on deconstructing the design process and blending disciplines and ideologies
reflecting the rich diversity of Milwaukee and echoing the global impact of Virgil Abloh’s life and work
A Ghanaian-American born and educated in the Midwest
Abloh went on to lead major European fashion houses Louis Vuitton and Off-White
It was a true celebration of the work Abloh did to bring street culture into the high fashion realm and the efforts Edessa is making to set a new standard for Milwaukee’s creative economy
Edessa Fashion School Dean Lynne Dixon-Speller led production efforts for the school’s fourth fashion production over the last 11 months
The idea for a theme centering Abloh came from Edessa’s Multimedia Art Director Leonardt Horák after he pointed out the immense cultural impact Abloh’s career made in fashion and culture globally
The team collectively felt that not nearly enough was being done to highlight Abloh’s influence here in Wisconsin
where Abloh received his undergraduate degree in civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison
Speller and the entire Edessa Team dreamed up this theme as a means to pay proper tribute to the late designer
who passed away in 2021 after a battle with cancer
Abloh went on to translate his engineering background and passion for street subcultures into the fashion world forming an unmistakable aesthetic that has helped shape the face of fashion today
and business, I see Abloh’s footprint
he drove a lot of people to do more,” Horák said
describing the influence Abloh has made on the new generation of artists and creative entrepreneurs.
Horák and Speller are set to launch a traveling exhibition in 2025 that will explore and honor Abloh’s life
Drawing from in-depth research and curated artwork
the exhibit will be based on an academic white paper co-authored by Horák
Courtney Hammonds and a dedicated team of researchers
Lynne Dixon-Speller didn’t know what direction her career would take when her husband’s job brought them to Milwaukee 27 years ago
She had started as an apparel professor at the University of Delaware
but her love for fashion and passion for education had been nurtured in her from a young age by her grandmother
“My husband dragged me from Baltimore kicking and screaming,” Dixon-Speller joked
Laying down roots in the city is what would eventually lead Dixon-Speller and her husband Jeffery Speller to found Edessa School of Fashion
The initial idea came to Dixon-Speller in the middle of the night after her previous institution dissolved abruptly leaving instructors and students with nowhere to continue
Recognizing the urgent need for a new program
That calling set her on a years-long journey toward state program approval
culminating just over two years ago with Edessa Fashion School becoming the first new four-year college to be approved in Wisconsin
reflecting on the grueling process of more than two years of planning
and uncertainty involved in establishing Edessa
“But it has been incredibly validating as an academician
I’ve had my hands in every single aspect of what it takes to operate a college.”
Edessa’s core mission is to prepare students for successful careers in the fashion industry
Dixon-Speller sees a wealth of untapped creative potential in Milwaukee and believes that the right preparation can help this talent reach new heights
She points to Virgil Abloh’s background in architecture and civil engineering as an example of how training in foundational design principles can be applied across disciplines to transform mere ideas into tangible
“Garments should be as good on the inside as they are on the outside
I almost feel that we’re alone at that level,” Dixon-Speller said
She is proud of the work her students are producing early in their educational journeys and is confident in their potential to thrive as professionals under the guidance of Edessa faculty
her garments are displayed in museums across the country
including the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture
Dixon-Speller encourages her students who aspire to similar places to work hard
just as her grandmother taught her to do – and just as visionary designers like Abloh have done
The IU women’s basketball roster rebuild continued Tuesday with the addition of Virginia transfer Edessa Noyan
The 6-foot-3 Noyan announced her commitment to Teri Moren’s squad following a visit to Bloomington
She also visited Purdue and West Virginia
Noyan played in 54 games with 26 starts over two seasons with Virginia
She averaged 5.7 points in 2024-25 while shooting 40.7% from the field overall
Her season was disrupted when she missed six games after being hospitalized with pneumonia
Noyan had some good games against top competition
two steals and a career-high four blocks against Duke
had five rebounds and knocked down four three-pointers in Virginia’s upset victory at North Carolina
Noyan has played multiple times on the Swedish National team
She should have two years of eligibility remaining
Indiana has now added four transfers during the offseason
Zania Socka-Ngueman (UCLA) and Phoenix Stotijn (Arkansas)

MILWAUKEE — Lynne Dixon-Speller is the founder of the Edessa School of Fashion.
The school is named after her grandmother, Edessa Meek-Dixon — a woman who didn’t just teach Dixon-Speller to sew but to pursue excellence in everything she made.
leaning in to see this little spot right here and ensuring that I’m doing it properly,” said Dixon-Speller
‘This is good enough,’ and she would think
‘It’s not,’ and I had made garments that I had to take two or three times because I tried to do it when she wasn’t there.”
sewing wasn’t just a skill; it was a ritual.
She said her grandmother’s lessons weren’t limited to hems and seams
It was about making things that last.
“She taught me the way it needed to be done and as close to perfection as possible,” said Dixon-Speller
“That was always the goal with her: perfection
It needed to be able to be worn inside out.”
Dixon-Speller said she brings the same lessons to her students at Edessa School of Fashion.

“She used to bring me in there and measure me and make me outfits
and I just remember feeling like I was her own personal dress up doll,” said McDonald

the Edessa School of Fashion held their annual fashion show at the Milwaukee Public Library. McDonald’s designs have already graced the runway there
including a black-and-gold suit she created during her sophomore year.

If you want to start exploring all of the greatness bubbling up on Nolensville Pike, Edessa is the best place to start. The Turkish and Kurdish restaurant is located in an unassuming strip mall in Little Kurdistan and the food here puts on a show. Hunks of meat hang from a rack medieval-style, and pillowy bubbles of lavash are thrown right from the oven onto your table. There’s rarely a miss and it's an elite spot for a group dinner of excellent dips and mountains of meat.
Ask for one of the cozy red booths, if one’s available. They comfortably seat four, but you can squeeze six if you’re feeling particularly ambitious. And because so many of the plates here are meant to be shared with a group, it isn’t unusual to find that exact situation happening all around the room. The more lavash, the merrier.

Noyan arrived at Virginia in 2023 as part of a recruiting class that included Virginia natives Kymora Johnson and Olivia McGhee
Noyan played in 28 games and logged three starts
averaging 2.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game in 13.7 minutes per contest
Noyan seized a spot in the starting lineup
starting 23 out of the 26 games she played in
and 1.1 assists per game and shot 32.8% from beyond the arc
Noyan scored in double figures five times this season
including her best game in a Cavalier uniform in the regular season finale
as she posted 16 points and five rebounds and knocked down four three-pointers in Virginia's upset victory at North Carolina
Noyan did not fare well in the ACC Tournament
shooting 4/17 and scoring a combined eight points in UVA's two games
Noyan's entrance into the transfer portal completes what has been a rather sudden exodus of most of Virginia's front court players
6'7" graduate center Taylor Lauterbach is the only player on the roster who definitively exhausted her eligibility this season
but the Cavaliers have seen 6'7" sophomore center and former Maryland transfer Hawa Doumbouya
6'4" forward and former Miami transfer Latasha Lattimore
and now Edessa Noyan enter the transfer portal
Doumbouya leaves Virginia after never playing a single minute as a Cavalier
That leaves 6'4" sophomore and former North Carolina transfer RyLee Grays and 6'2" freshman forward Breona Hurd as the only two forwards left on the current roster
Coach Mox and company now have plenty of room to go to work in the transfer portal this offseason armed with the first installment of Alexis Ohanian's record-breaking donation to the UVA women's basketball program back in December
Even with the aforementioned front court pieces
Virginia was often at a disadvantage against ACC opponents at those positions
the Cavaliers will look to upgrade their roster with at least a few experienced and talented forwards and centers to complement Virginia's returning corps of Kymora Johnson
Stay tuned to Virginia Cavaliers On SI for all the latest updates regarding Virginia's offseason activity in the transfer portal

Self-described food ‘celebrator’ Anas Saba shares new favorites and advice on finding new restaurants
When Anas Saba started taking his friends to different restaurants in South Nashville
he wasn’t planning to make a full-time job of it
He just wanted to share his hometown’s many delicious
Now, years later, his recommendations reach thousands of people through his @nashvillehiddengems Instagram account
where he posts about everything from small
immigrant-owned restaurants to well-known local staples
A self-described “celebrator” of food as opposed to a critic
Saba has been broadening people’s palates through posts
The Scene recently caught up with Saba to discuss his perspective on Nashville’s ever-changing food landscape
That username has been a blessing and a curse
… Being on my page doesn’t mean that I’m considering this place a Nashville hidden gem — it just might be a great place
a hidden gem is a place that’s just not in the regular media rotation
… Maybe they don’t have the savvy or the budget or they’re not necessarily thinking about marketing a lot
and something that I think is worth experiencing and worth sharing
So the places that I consider the certified hidden gems
My number one rec when people do ask me for a sitdown dinner — I do send people to Noko a lot. What I like about Noko is the service is always really great there
that’s actually the most important thing when you are paying a higher price or you’re going to a higher-end restaurant
… And then there’s just too many to count when it comes to lunch
TashTea [Cafe] in Antioch — really cool Turkish/Kurdish breakfast place
We just don’t really have anything like that in Nashville right now
so I was really happy to see that they were doing that
I think food in Nashville is a little bit expensive compared to cities that have a much higher cost of living than Nashville — but food prices are essentially the same
I have no problem paying a lot for good food
and I understand that most of the time the prices aren’t inflated — it’s just the cost of things is so high
I think I would just like to see a few [or] some more reasonable options on every menu
I do wish we had more late-night options
the quality of service is so down — especially at a higher-end restaurant
it’s really hard to find a place that can deliver a consistently good experience from the food and service perspective
and then the service gets neglected and stuff
I feel like I see some places that will put so much into bringing new people in
OK — getting people in the door is one thing
what kind of practices are you doing to make sure that people feel like they’re taken care of
and people are going out to feel taken care of
And I’m just noticing it’s becoming harder and harder to find places that do deliver that level of service
Newroz [Market], K&S [World Market] and Richland [Park] Farmers Market
it was hard for a while to go and try new spots
starting this page really encouraged me to
… But I would say for most people — I used to hear this all the time — people would be afraid of going to an international restaurant because they might be worried about language barriers
or they might not know what to order on the menu
I think that’s a really interesting experience
because that’s how most immigrants feel 99 percent of the time when they’re in America
but they go out and they do what they gotta do anyway
And so I would say do a little bit of research before you go
and just be open to trying new things and understanding that … so much can be communicated just through body language and expressions
And don’t let your fear or your anxiety about trying a spot for a first time keep you from finding your new favorite place
they rely on someone just taking that chance and trying them for the first time
so they rely on their neighbors just saying
I’ve seen this Uzbek restaurant — I pass by it a hundred times,” “I see this taco truck all the time
The beautiful thing about a lot of these mom-and-pop restaurants is you can give it a shot
usually you’re not going to be breaking the bank entirely to try them for the first time.”
Thursday marks 40 years since the blessed repose of a contemporary saint: St
The Ecumenical Patriarchate canonized him in 2020
Saint Callinicus was born in 1919 in Sitaralona of Thermo
and spent the first part of his life in Thermo and Missolonghi
His parents were named George and Catherine
According to the Athonite monk Theologos the Ivirite
Callinicus of Edessa recounted during a visit to Mount Athos that his grandmother
would wake him at midnight to do prostrations
who was ‘wounded’ by the life of the Holy Mountain.”
Testimonies collected by the Metropolitan of Nafpaktos from the Saint’s college classmates show that
he was “a lamb without guile of Christ,” wholly devoted to “prayer and good deeds,” “such a beautiful soul.”
he served his military duty as a missionary behind the front lines
and subsequently a hieromonk in 1957 at Myrtia Monastery
he said that “the inheritance of a bishop is not the throne
The bishop is the first to ascend Golgotha.” Every hierarch is “a bearer of the martyrical priesthood of Christ,” added the Saint
according to Metropolitan Hierotheos Vlachos of Nafpaktos
“he participated either with a word full of discernment or with eloquent silence
He supported the positions he considered right
regardless of their advocates,” related Metropolitan Hierotheos
after a difficult session of the Holy Synod
he wrote to me: ‘One thing I see: unfortunately
we seek solutions to our problems from men and forget that no one loves us and cares for us more than God
kneel and pray to the Founder of the Church to help your bishop for His Church.’”
he gave his spirit into the hands of the Lord
“he was vigilant even in the deepest sleep
the defining trait of a true monastic hermit who has the prayer of the mind in the heart is deep vigilance,” writes the Metropolitan of Nafpaktos

Let's breakdown some key takeaways from the Cavaliers' lopsided win over the Explorers:
I remarked after Virginia's 83-41 victory over Radford on Wednesday night that the lineup UVA went with to start that game (Kymora Johnson
and Latasha Lattimore) would be UVA's most frequent and most effective starting five moving forward this season
the Cavaliers used a fourth different starting five in their fourth game of the season
and Latasha Lattimore with Vaughn replacing Paris Clark
giving UVA two point guard facilitators and allowing Johnson to play off ball
something Coach Mox is interested in exploring more this season
Though Virginia ultimately ran away with this game for a near 30-point victory
this matchup was still very much in question at halftime as the Cavaliers led by only five points
Contributing to that close halftime score was UVA shooting 17% from three-point range in the first half
including 1/8 in the second quarter and La Salle outrebounded Virginia 25-22 and recorded seven steals in the first half
struggled to execute in the half-court offense
and were getting outworked on the glass by the Explorers
as the Hoos tipped the scales back in their favor on the glass (24-20)
cleaned up the turnovers (only six in the second half)
scored 15 points off of 11 La Salle turnovers
That helped UVA win the third quarter 26-13 and the fourth 21-10 to put the game out of reach
Read Val's Plus/Minus breakdown of the game here.
Kymora Johnson's sophomore campaign has gotten off to an excellent start and that extends to many facets of her game
She shot 4/7 from three-point range and scored 20 points against La Salle
Johnson is shooting a clean 50% from beyond the arc (8/16) through four games and has been at or above 50% from three in three of those four games
it opens up her drives and allows her to more room to show off her elite passing and playmaking skills
One concerning note: Kymora Johnson and Yonta Vaughn were a combined 6/13 from deep
Whether Virginia can punish opponents for allowing open shots from three-point range will dictate how successful this season will be
The Cavaliers need consistency in their perimeter shooting
but she was one of five Cavaliers to reach double figures against La Salle
Latasha Lattimore had her first double-double in a Virginia uniform
posting 12 points (on 4/6 shooting) and 12 rebounds to go along with three blocks and two assists
Breona Hurd still had her fourth-consecutive game scoring in double digits to start her career
Olivia McGhee poured in 14 points off the bench
RyLee Grays and Casey Valenti-Paea are still trying to find a rhythm and their respective roles on this team
but that's what these softer early-season non-conference games are for
Virginia hosts Alabama State on Wednesday night
Tipoff from John Paul Jones Arena is set for 7pm on ACC Network Extra
We got our first look at the 2024-25 ‘Hoos on Saturday evening
The Virginia Cavaliers women’s basketball team kicked off the Blue-White Scrimmages on Saturday evening inside John Paul Jones Arena
taking care of business against the male scout team 36-29
and Latasha Lattimore made up the first five for the ‘Hoos with Yonta Vaughn
and Casey Valenti-Paea the first three to come off the bench in both halves
Here are four takeaways from our first look at the ‘Hoos in year three of the Coach Mox era
The least-heralded member of Coach Mox’s 2023 recruiting class that also included highly touted prospects Kymora Johnson and Olivia McGhee
Noyan looks like she’s ready to take a big step forward this season
The sophomore forward from Sweden finished with an efficient 11 points to lead all scorers in the Blue-White Scrimmage
showing off an array of post moves while also stepping back beyond the arc to knock down her only three-point attempt of the evening
Noyan averaged just 2.9 points per game during her freshman campaign
she led the squad in field goal percentage (.500) for the season and scored a career-high 13 points (6-8 FG) in Virginia’s WBIT win over High Point in March
Keep an eye on Noyan to step into a starting role (as she did in the scrimmage) and become a key contributor this season for the ‘Hoos
Replacing the production of former All-ACC forward Camryn Taylor was a major objective for Coach Mox this season in the portal
and securing Miami transfer Latasha Lattimore was a big step toward filling that hole
Lattimore put her athleticism on display on Saturday evening
finishing with six points while skying for several impressive rebounds
Lattimore also brings an element of length that the ‘Hoos didn’t have last season
Lattimore was the starting center for the ‘Hoos in both halves and while Virginia struggled to limit second-chance opportunities early on
once she found her rhythm in the second half the ‘Hoos had no problem grabbing boards and soaring back from a 20-11 halftime deficit
Coach Mox stayed hot on the high school recruiting circuit
bringing in three more exciting freshman this season in Breona Hurd
And despite playing in their first live JPJ action on Saturday evening
the newcomers were ready to go in the Blue-White Scrimmage
Payton Dunbar — a 5-foot-11 guard from Narrows
— got the start for the ‘Hoos and finished with five points while knocking down her only three-point attempt
Dunbar reclassified up into the class of 2024 to join the ‘Hoos this season but has a smooth shooting stroke and a lengthy frame for a guard
Breona Hurd — a four-star forward from Waynesville
— also finished with five points in the scrimmage
Hurd looked incredibly mobile and showed an ability to put the ball on the floor
knocking down a nifty turnaround jumper in the first half after being the fourth player off the bench in the rotation
With many core pieces from last season returning and a nice crop of veteran transfers
the ‘Hoos don’t necessarily need much from their freshmen to have a successful 2024-25 campaign
Coach Mox knows how to find young players who can make an instant impact
The Virginia program has been plagued by injuries throughout the Coach Mox era
The ‘Hoos had to turn down a WNIT bid two seasons ago due to a lack of available bodies and saw a revolving door of players miss games last winter
the ‘Hoos were without four players in the Blue-White Scrimmage: Paris Clark
it was just a scrimmage so there’s no reason to believe anyone would’ve been out of uniform had it been a real game
but it’s certainly disheartening to see several key players banged up already
SearchKurdish-Turkish Cuisine: A New Tradition Made in Nashville Federico Pravettoni Nov 14
Edessa Restaurant has built a reputation for serving authentic Kurdish-Turkish food in Music City
Providing an experience of flavors to locals and a wider established Kurdish population of 20,000 people in Nashville
the restaurant received praise and recognition from The Tennessean and Nashville Scene in recent years
the spotlight shifted in the end of September
when the restaurant featured in the newly released list of Top 50 American Restaurants in 2024 by The New York Times
came to the United States in 2014 and opened it seeking to bring a taste from home he could not find
The restaurant’s name originates from Keklik’s hometown
which means ancient city and is located in a diverse part of Turkey close to Syria
The area’s historical diversity before the ‘90s
“The main goal of our dish in the restaurant here is keeping the food authentic as possible,” said Roj Botani
“We are here to serve everyone and serve people equally with our food and our tradition.”
originated from Turkey but moved to the United States from the Netherlands two years ago
He said the national recognition by The Times brought new customers
while not changing the usual busyness of Edessa
the mention brings happiness along a sense of responsibility
“Imagine some people are going to come one
three hours away to try this food,” he said
Keklik looked to instill the importance of guests from the Turkish culture to the rest of his team
that make sure that if customers come here
make sure they have good food here and they're happy with their food,” said Botani
“If you're happy today with your food

all excellent—Edessa is where you go when you want a proper sit-down meal
It’s where we take our out-of-town friends who want to know just how good the Kurdish and Turkish food are in Nashville
Their adana kebab plate is the thing to get here—two juicy skewers of chargrilled ground lamb and beef served with rice and a side salad that’s hard to beat
bring a few people and order their kebab festival
And if you don’t order the kunefe for dessert
Egyptian
Nolensville Pike
King Tut’s is one of our favorite places to eat in all of Nashville
It’s an Egyptian spot with amazing crispy falafel that’s hands down the best in the city
and tastes even better drizzled in their tahini dressing
They recently expanded their patio and opened up an indoor space
so there’s even more room to spread out with that falafel
Come here for a casual lunch or early dinner before checking out the nearby Nashville Zoo
PlayUnmute7.6Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack South5814 Nolensville Pike Nashville
Fried Chicken
As the OG Nashville hot chicken spot
While their original location was on the north side of the city
this Nolensville Pike location became their main operation a couple of years ago
Whether you’re testing your spice tolerance or playing it safe
you’ll get a mouthful of tingling cayenne and spices in every bite
Let that white bread soak up all that flavor
and don’t forget to give your hands a good scrubbing before touching your face
PlayUnmute8.4DegthaiThai
Deghtai is a wonderful success story of a food truck that transitioned into a very popular brick and mortar
but you can have faith that they execute everything well
the Jay’s Special stir-fry is loaded with so much chicken that you can probably stretch it out for two meals
is one of the most soul-nourishing bowls in the city—coconut milk
and curry spices all fuse together to create a broth that we crave every time the temperature drops below 40
Come here for a quick takeout meal and know that the spice levels are no joke
PlayUnmuteNewrozKurdish
In the center of Nashville’s Little Kurdistan
but this is many families’ one-stop shop for halal meat
Go for the beef on lavash because you’ll get that perfect meat-to-bread ratio and chewy-to-crispy quotient
Just know that they can be very generous with the toppings
so we often ask for light toppings to protect the structural integrity of the shawarma
avoid coming on Fridays from 11:45am-1:45pm
Friday service from the mosque next door brings in a swell of people and makes parking difficult
Tex-Mex
Come to this casual family-owned Tex-Mex spot for breakfast tacos and a solid cup of coffee
but always get one loaded with their crispy potatoes
and you’ve set yourself up for an excellent day
Tempo has also become a wonderful third space for South Nashville—you’ll see young professionals taking work calls
they also frequently host events where local artists share their work—one night you can dance to cumbia
and another you can check out a free night market with a ton of vintage
PlayUnmutePupuseria Reina La BendiciónSalvadoran
our favorite part about Pupuseria Reina La Bendición is the eclectic decor
we always spot something new that they’ve added to their walls
like a house-shaped clock with singing frogs
or electrical boxes that they’ve painted to make it look like two neighbors talking to each other
A quick meal here is like playing a round of Where’s Waldo that also happens to include great Salvadoran food
While everyone knows about this place for their pupusas (rightfully so)
fluffy-on-the-inside fried yuca is another standout
PlayUnmuteTaste Of PersiaPersian
Sharing the same parking lot as Sichuan Hot Pot
this restaurant is one of the few places in Nashville with a dedicated menu for Persian dishes
but quickly became a favorite in Nashville’s Iranian community
with a perfect char on the koubideh and chicken soltani every time
but if you want something distinctly Persian
go for one of their stews—like the very herby and fragrant ghorme sabzeh
so we usually end up here on family dinner nights or casual dates
PlayUnmutePlaza MariachiLatin
South Nashville
Plaza Mariachi is a multicultural plaza with multiple food vendors, music, and a bonafide party atmosphere
there weren’t a lot of places in this part of town where families could get together
and it’s fast become a cornerstone of the community for cultural celebrations
it’s a great place to bring a group when no one can agree on what to eat
Go on the weekends for the best selection of vendors—get some tacos
and any fresh fruit you see—and stick around for live entertainment like Mexican folk and norteño music
Tacos Y Mariscos Los CarnalesMexican
and pulpo al pastor tacos here can go toe-to-toe with any tacos in Nashville
the shrimp tacos could even compete with any you’ll find on the Pacific coast of Mexico
Spice things up with an order of aguachile or the bracingly tart ceviche that comes in a softball-sized mound over a singular tostada
but you don’t really need much when the seafood is this good
PlayUnmuteSiam CafeInternational Market
this restaurant was the first taste of Thai food for generations of Nashvillians
The prices also seem stuck in another time—all the curries and noodles are under $15

or lad nah noodles covered in a rich gravy for a super filling meal that’ll cost under $25

They'll also personally ladle up a bowl of hearty beef soup that's been simmering for hours and squeeze in some lime that brightens the rich broth up
This happens to be one of the few restaurants on Nolensville Pike with a full bar
and there’s a karaoke machine in the back that will start calling your name after a few margaritas
PlayUnmute7.8Gojo Ethiopian RestaurantEthiopian
The sky-blue exterior has long been a beacon of hope for those seeking to get their fix of injera and vegetable platters
This Ethiopian restaurant was one of the first in Nashville
introducing people to the beautiful world of awaze tibs and doro wat
Bring some friends to share the vegetable platters and know the drink policy here is BYOB
The whole operation is perfect for a relatively affordable and filling meal
Sichuan Hot Pot5680 Nolensville Pike Nashville
Chinese
this was the only place for hot pot in Nashville
but this is still our preferred option for bubbling broth
They have a ton of different interest options for soup bases—Mandarin duck
and winter melon—but the spicy is one we keep coming back to
especially in winter months when we’re looking to clear out our sinuses
There are also plenty of other great dishes like mapo tofu

There are plenty of other sweet treats worth getting
and pick whatever speaks to you from the selection of pan dulce
SubcultureHouse Of Kabob407 W Thompson Ln Nashville
House of Kabob has been around for a while

Taqueria El Dolar #23500 Nolensville Pike Nashville
This is our favorite overall taqueria in the area
That’s mainly because the meat is cooked perfectly every time here
unlike a lot of other taco options in the area
Our perfect order is one chicken featuring super moist chunks of meat
one carne asada that’s always nicely charred
and the prices ($2 per taco) are super affordable

MILWAUKEE — Edessa School of Fashion opened two years ago in Milwaukee’s Third Ward
The college teaches fashion design and marketing
Sabrina Lombardo will become the college’s first graduate
She will receive her bachelor’s degree in apparel design at the end of May
It’s a little nerve racking to be the first, but I’m also very proud of that,” said Lombardo
Lombardo has been designing for years; she has an Instagram account called Native Nation Designs.
She said she decided to earn her degree so she could hone her skills and be the best version of herself
A lot of craziness with my last semester in school
but I’m definitely up for the challenge,” she said
Lynne Dixon-Speller is the academic dean and founder of Edessa
She said her team is already making contacts for Lombardo in New York to help her find work
Lombardo’s graduation is a major stepping-stone for the college as well
so you have to operate and get students to attend the school that does not have accreditation and believe in it that much. So that now we can seek accreditation due to the fact that we have had a graduate,” said Dixon-Speller
Accreditation allows the college to offer financial aid
makes credits more transferable and validates the educational quality of the program
It’s a program that Lombardo said has prepared her for the Big Apple
“I just want to become the best version of myself and the best designer I can possibly become,” said Lombardo
Dixon-Speller is the Tenacious B honoree of the 2024 Betty Awards
Lynne Dixon-Speller’s first foray in fashion started with Barbies and paper dolls
But her love for the craft of designing and making clothes stood the test of time
her grandmother Edessa – also a master seamstress – moved into the family’s home in Tennessee
teaching me not only to sew at a higher level
but with the mind of a perfectionist,” she says
Dixon-Speller has similarly influenced a generation of fashion designers-to-be
She began college at age 16 and graduated with a degree in interior design and architectural planning
Her drive to learn more about fashion fueled her to earn advanced degrees in apparel and textiles
after which she taught apparel design at the university level in Delaware and won numerous accolades for her own fashion designs – including a garment in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Her husband’s job brought the couple to Milwaukee
Mount Mary and the Art Institute of Wisconsin
Dixon-Speller became dean and campus director of the Art Institute of Wisconsin
The school in the Third Ward closed its doors in 2017
leaving many hopeful students without the degrees they’d worked hard to earn
Dixon-Speller was determined to do something about it.
After five years of navigating a tangled web of bureaucracy
Dixon-Speller in 2022 officially opened Edessa School of Fashion
It’s the only dedicated fashion school in the Midwest
the first minority-led and -founded four-year college in Wisconsin and the first four-year fashion college in the US with minority leadership
Nearly half of the student body comes from the Art Institute
learning under expert designers from around the country – and it’s drastically more affordable than other fashion schools.
The school celebrated its first student graduation on May 27
exactly 104 years after Dixon-Speller’s grandmother Edessa graduated from college
must be in Dixon-Speller’s genes: Both women faced significant barriers pursuing their goals
but ultimately proved tenacious in their drive
“I think she would be extremely proud,” says Dixon-Speller
so let's break down some key takeaways from the scrimmage and what they mean for the 2024 UVA women's basketball season:
Kymora Johnson and Olivia McGhee deservedly earned much recognition for how much they contributed in their first years at Virginia
but the third member of UVA's freshman class from last season is also poised for a breakout year
and averaged almost 14 minutes played per game
Noyan also earned valuable experience playing overseas with the U20 Swedish National Team at the 2024 Nordic Championship and FIBA U20 Women's EuroBasket Championship
Noyan seems to have taken all of that experience over the last 12 months and used it to prepare herself for a big year 2 at UVA
as she hit the first two shots of the Blue-White Scrimmage and led all scorers with 11 points
She was comfortable taking and making shots from various spots on the floor and knocked down her only three-point attempt
Look for Noyan to play big minutes in the Virginia front court this season
and McGhee headline a solid group of returners
Virginia totally revamped its roster with seven newcomers
including three freshmen and four transfers
who received a special mention from Coach Mox during the introductions about how UVA fans might see an in-game dunk this year
was the scrimmage's second-leading scorer with six points
True freshmen Breonna Hurd and Payton Dunbar had five points apiece and North Carolina transfer RyLee Grays had two points
This is not a knock on the past couple of years of Virginia women's basketball rosters
The Cavaliers had to play 6'2" forwards like Camryn Taylor and London Clarkson at center because they had no other choice
While former Kansas State transfer Taylor Lauterbach gave Virginia a taller option at 6'7"
she played the least amount of minutes of any player on the team last season
Not only did Virginia add another 6'7" giant in Maryland's Hawa Doumbouya
but the Cavaliers also have a pair of versatile and athletic 6'4" forwards in Latasha Lattimore and RyLee Grays
Edessa Noyan is getting more comfortable playing inside out and stretching the floor as a 6'3" forward
Don't forget about the 6'2" guard Olivia McGhee or the 6'2" true freshman forward Breona Hurd
Virginia should be a dominant rebounding team
a category where the Cavaliers were already one of the best in the ACC
Not playing in the scrimmage were Paris Clark
who will miss the entire 2024-2025 season with an ACL injury she suffered back in May
It remains to be seen what the extent of the injuries are to Clark
but it's essential that the Cavaliers get Clark back on the floor as soon as possible
as she was Virginia's third-leading scorer and third-leading rebounder a season ago
Virginia pushed the ball in transition to create fast-break opportunities early and often during the scrimmage
With some highly athletic players on the roster
it only makes sense for the Hoos to run in transition as often as possible
Keep an eye on Latasha Lattimore and RyLee Grays running the floor and see if they can build their connection with Kymora Johnson and Yonta Vaughn to create easy baskets for Virginia this season
“In some ways the investigation into my rape
what followed was a digital strip search.” Emily
explains the impact of the excessive data collection in rape cases
Information Commissioner John Edwards set out the distressing picture of how survivors of rape and sexual assault felt they were treated by police and the legal system
in the immediate aftermath of a life-changing attack
survivors were told to consent to handing over huge amounts of information about their personal lives
social service records and their mobile phones
they were told their legal case may fall apart
Evidence suggested these intrusive practices were contributing to survivors withdrawing from the legal process
The Commissioner called for change to rebuild trust and enable more victims to seek justice
The recommended changes were supported across the criminal justice sector
there have been positive steps to improve the experience of survivors going through the criminal justice system
“Excessive intrusion into irrelevant and deeply personal data of rape complainants has become habitual in the justice system
despite my and others’ vocal protests over many years
Commissioner Edwards cites the deep personal impact this can have on rape complainants and I share his view that this has played a crucial role in the collapse of rape prosecutions.” Dame Vera Baird KC
Victims’ Commissioner for England and Wales

When Lynne Dixon-Speller taught at the University of Delaware
she took a group of 30 young women to New York
where they visited a fashion industry association
She said one of the students asked someone from the group where they got their inspiration
drive to Spanish Harlem and look around,’” Dixon-Speller said
I had no students of color with me on that trip
It didn’t hit them the way it hit me personally
“And I decided at that point,” she continued
“This needed to be worked on.”
The trip inspired her to create a new course about ethnic influences on American fashion. And yet, she wanted to think bigger, Dixon-Speller said recently on Wisconsin Public Radio’s “The Morning Show.”
“That doesn’t belong in one course,” she said
“It belongs in the entire curriculum.”
Later, Dixon-Speller ended up in Milwaukee at Mount Mary University and then the Art Institute of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Magazine reported last year
she was left brainstorming how to put her big idea into action
It didn’t take long for the Edessa School of Fashion to find its way in the industry
and we were at New York Fashion Week in September,” Dixon-Speller said
Dixon-Speller said her students participated in New York Fashion Week Black
a national platform for emerging designers who worked with Edessa students in Milwaukee
Dixon-Speller said she wants students to hit the ground running
She wants the fashion industry to see her students and know they went to school focused on fashion right from the start
She said beginning fashion studies as freshmen should give students more bang for their buck
“So that when employers see the name
Dixon-Speller said the experience at New York Fashion Week is going to leave her students with a perspective they can carry for the rest of their careers
It gave a taste of real life — a taste she said a lot of apparel design and marketing students don’t get until after graduation
She said the fashion industry needs to change and be more inclusive
She said Black and brown people are looking at all kinds of industries and asking: “How many of us are working there
More than 25 percent of New York Fashion Week’s official schedule featured Black-owned brands, according to Vanity Fair
“When you see the leadership representing the segment of the population that you come from
you feel more comfortable that you don’t have to continue to explain who you are,” Dixon-Speller said
“That you get to be who you are and let it shine through your work and people will appreciate it — and not critique it as not marketable.”
How could Wisconsin and the Midwest get on the fashion map with big cities such as New York
Los Angeles and Paris dominating the industry
Dixon-Speller said while Wisconsin clearly doesn’t have the influence of those cities
She said she met two or three other designers in New York who were from Wisconsin
One show she attended “embodied Wisconsin and fashion in metallurgy
ripped garments and a very muted color palette.”
While Dixon-Speller said students who want to “really shake the Earth” in fashion might need to leave Wisconsin
there are good and decent jobs in the state and region
execute and construct a pair of pants and then bring it to market takes about 40 people
There are more jobs in fashion around the country than people realize
Although Edessa’s first graduates are years away
Dixon-Speller has cleared hurdles in creating a school
She and others are building Edessa’s influence
She said they’ve already been invited back to New York
pursued higher education when it was rare for both Black people and women
Dixon-Speller’s grandfather graduated from Tuskegee
Traveling from Texas to Alabama around 1916 meant risking their lives
It took until Dixon-Speller was about 35 years old to fully appreciate how inspiring that was

which serves fiery tom yum noodles that would feel right at home in Bangkok
One fan favorite that never fails is Edessa’s
which packs in regulars nightly despite its strip mall parking lot digs
thanks to ample portions of Kurdish and Turkish dishes
Co-owner Mesut Kelik is just one of more than 15,000 expats who make up Nashville’s Kurdish diaspora community—one of the largest in the world. For centuries, the Kurds have existed across the borders of multiple nations, a cultural and geographic diversity reflected in their cuisine. Edessa is named in honor of an ancient Mesopotamian city in what is now Turkey

Virginia snags a center with the handle of a wing
The Virginia Cavaliers started out last season with just 11 players on the roster and
Coach Agugua-Hamilton is determined that that never happen again
Although they have not announced it officially
the athletic department retweeted Edessa Noyan’s commitment tweet:
She is heading to @UVAWomensHoops Congrats on your commitment @Edessanoyan pic.twitter.com/lnEqyalDDH
Noyan is a 19-year old center who still appears to be growing
She has played in Sweden’s top professional league
for the past two years for perennial power Sodertalje BBK
She committed last November to San Francisco
but Coach Mox apparently is working the Scandanavian circuit hard
having recently made offers to 2025 forward/wing Lourdes da Silva Costa and 2026 guard Kayla Jade Frier
Noyan also starred for Sweden’s U18 national team
That team won the 2022 Nordic Championship as she averaged 18.8 points and 9 boards playing against women her own age
Noyan was Sweden’s most efficient player according to the advanced metrics
as well as the team’s second-leading scorer and rebounder
She’s listed as a center on Sodertalje roster
she flashed the ball-handling skills of a wing
coupled with the arrival of new transfer Taylor Lauterbach
Coach Mox will be able to field some serious size in next year’s ACC
Noyan is the third player to announce for Virginia in the past week, joining the aforementioned Taylor Lautenbach and Paris Clark
Alongside 2023’s top-50 recruits Mo Johnson and Olivia McGhee
Coach Mox now has 13 players under scholarship for the next season
so I suspect the battle for playing time is going to be fierce
ilmenee analytiikkayhtiö Accuscoren Iltalehdelle laatimasta ennusteesta
IL-ennusteen mukaan SDP voittaa kuntavaalit 21,5 %:n kannatuksella ja toiseksi tuleva kokoomus saisi 21,2 %:n kannatuksen
Kolmantena tulevan keskustan kannatus on 17,2 %

Keskusta on kolmantena 18,7 %:n kannatuksella
Silloin Accuscore ennusti SDP:n ottavan voiton aluevaaleissa 22,4 prosentin kannatuksella

The Synaxarion of the Orthodox Church helps us
to confirm that the Saints lived the miraculous event of the uncreated light of the Transfiguration with their life and work
James and John experienced in union with the Saviour Christ
The light given by the Lord helps the Saints to withstand with joy
strength and courage the temptations and various hardships until the end of their earthly life
those initiated in the uncreated grace of the Trinity are like luminous islets and help us during our own spiritual struggle to remain moral
Following the decision of the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on 23 June 2020
we think that the canonisation of Metropolitan Kallinikos of Edessa confirmes what it was said above
The Orthodox Church commemorates today a new Saint
whose holiness was ascertained and recently proclaimed by the faithful themselves
Metropolitan Kallinikos was an ascetic Bishop
became a Saint when he reposed in the Lord
He graduated from the Theological School at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and was ordained deacon and an elder by his brother
He served as secretary and preacher of the Metropolis of Aitolia and Akarnania
The ordination was performed by Metropolitan Dionysios of Trikkis and Stagon
who was previously the first Director at the “Apostolos Barnabas” Theological School of the Church of Cyprus
Saint Kallinikos devoted his life to charity
He was meek and honest and left his pastoral work as a legacy to the Metropolis of Edessa
The faithful the Church ascertained and proclaimed the holiness of life
The people who knew him spoke of his spiritual devotion
his devotion to the Church and the path he followed in his life with love and fear of God
the day that the Orthodox Church commemorates him
He was an example for all faithful and especially for the Bishops of the Orthodox Church

The Rescue of Armenian Historiography and the Chronicle of Matthew of Edessa
Given online by the Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies on December 17
Abstract: Of the thirty-five manuscripts that remain of the 12th-century Chronicle of Matthew of Edessa
but over half of them were produced by 1700
This pattern of survival reflects a wider reality for Armenian literature
gave way to a period of relative peace in the 17th century that provided an opportunity for a conscious “rescue” of the Armenian literary heritage
especially (but not exclusively) centered around the Amrdolu monastery of Bitlis
In this talk I will present some of the features and puzzles of the manuscript tradition of the Chronicle that speak to this restoration
and at the same time give us glimpses into the history of the developing Armenian diaspora
