A World Away comes four years into the producer's celebrated dance music career
he has instead transitioned toward more organic and dreamy bass in his definitive effort
Songs like "Braids" and "Cage," produced with Mossy
with the latter even tastefully venturing into progressive house
"Faithless" incorporates an acoustic guitar riff into its last 30 seconds
"Flow Through Me" is a gentle display of future bass
and "Drown" featuring Aura is delicate and vocal centric.
"The album leans more heavily toward the melodic side
Most of the records aren’t songs people will play out at festivals," Shaw told EDM.com over the phone
They're meant more for the listener than for a performing DJ."
The project as a whole is thoughtful and introspective
A World Away's story picks up where Shaw's 2018 EP
While the six-track release was perhaps best described as a "breakup EP," this new album instead creatively expands on positive
These include a move to Los Angeles and a recent engagement to house DJ Sam Blacky.
the EP celebrates vulnerability and imperfection through five dark
including a collaboration with dubstep icon Flux Pavilion
but also a triumphant display of strength for Shaw
The 28-year-old has been open on social media about his struggles with mental health
experiencing epileptic and dissociative symptoms since he was 14
Having dreamed of releasing an album since starting high school
Shaw can now look back and say he made it to the finish line.
"One of my biggest symptoms is self-doubt
I've struggled my whole life with it," he said
and be able to listen to the album front to back
It feels like a major accomplishment."
It's fair to say Shaw's fans have been anticipating an album release almost as much as he has. With its release imminent, Shaw is making sure to include them in the celebration. Since announcing the tracklist and release date earlier this month
he's been posting artwork and song samples to Twitter along with notes on the creative process behind each song
is about letting go of things beyond immediate control
while "To A Friend (Interlude)" was inspired by a friend who passed away.
Shaw's transparency is what makes him easy for listeners to connect with. He interacts frequently with his followers and makes himself available after events. He recounted one special experience in particular with someone he met in the crowd at a Rezz show.
"We started talking about his best friend who had passed away
We talked for like an hour," Shaw remembered
It's really cool that music can create bonds for people like that."
Soon to be back on tour with a 20-date headlining run kicking off in Seattle February 6th
Shaw is looking forward to providing fans with an immersive set geared toward the album
He's focused on quality visual content and upping the production level
explaining that he wants to create something more for people in the audience than just another DJ set.
"I would like to leave its meaning kind of ambiguous
Everyone feels different things," Shaw said
"I hope people take something positive away from it
and maybe it’ll help them get through something hard."
which will include his new single "No Therapy," was conceptualized around his own journey with wellness
"Revenge of the Unicorns" will be the producer's third EP
“Renaissance Boy” is a deeply introspective look at what it means to learn and grow
Update: Ekali has denied these allegations
Sam Black has posted a statement on Twitter detailing what seems like a horrific relationship with ex-partner Nathan Shaw aka Ekali
The DJ pair got engaged at the end of 2019
From verbal and physical abuse to drug use
it’s shaping up to be a different side of Ekali that many know him for
Not only has Sam accused Ekali of these actions
she also posted images of bruises on both of her arms
Both sides 👌🏽 pic.twitter.com/LFrdagPAlf
There are a range of incidents she mentions regarding Ekali
While this may be a looping case of cancel culture brought on by their rough breakup – the bruises speak volumes
However Sam has stated there’s a lot of evidence including “About 85 photos and videos and emails”
This is unfortunately the next in a line of inappropriate and terrible behaviours from artists within the dance music scene
Fans have understandably come to Sam’s defense
Twitter has turned on Ekali as showcased below
It is so hard to put my thoughts into words about Ekali right now
all I can say is he is one big fat fucking disappointment to anyone who considered him an idol or friend
Really disappointing to hear about Ekali tonight
he's one of the artists I saw the most and loved seeing liveHoping the best for those who were hurt by his actions and wishing you good healing 🌴
you were just a shitty person disguised as a good person.
Ekali has responded to these allegations as shown below:
Re: Sam pic.twitter.com/rxcPLPhRrV
Ekali followed up with a second statement:
On what I did do to wrong to cause Sam hurt in our relationship pic.twitter.com/okLP7IlAss
Responding to the abuse allegations and more specifically the bruises on his ex-partners arms
Ekali mentioned that he has not seen Sam in 27 days
I am not sure where the bruises came from but they are not from me
Sam Black responded to Ekali’s denial with multiple replies
including message screenshots of other females sharing their stories of Ekali:
And more pic.twitter.com/9szZRADmQv

Ekali lets loose on Mix Up, the outcome is MASSIVE!
Canadian kid Ekali’s no stranger on Mix Up.. Just last year he threw down a jaw dropping set so we jumped on the opportunity to have him back once more.
Now part of the OWSLA crew he’s had his music remixed by Skrillex and played by Alison Wonderland to some monster audiences. Never not on the road we were lucky enough to have him through the studio on Mix Up!
Debut EP on the way too – get set for even more Ekali before the year’s out!
Cop his huge Flume remix in the meantime >
Here’s a sneaky link to his Mix Up set from last year too >
10/20 – Fortitude Valley - The Flying Cock
10/21 – West Mackay - The Grass Is Grenner
It’s that time of year again where we see lots of DJs go at each other on social media for one reason or another. We previously saw beef between Skrillex and Wiwek over a female companion but now it seems as though another female dispute has arisen
Ghastly called out Ekali on Twitter stating that he is “a piece of shit that the electronic dance industry shouldn’t trust.” Ghastly claims that he and 15 other DJs have reportedly felt the impact of Ekali’s supposed “Home-wrecker mentality”
“He has hurt and destroyed more relationships than I even realized
he deserves to be called out – I’m still technically not saying exactly who but he deserves any karma he receives” Yup the he that Ghastly mentions are of course Ekali
Ekali released a statement following the incident on Reddit which you can read below
They weren’t together and hadn’t been for some time
I was also aware he had been seeing other people so I assumed when he texted me and said “just make sure you don’t hurt Montana” and essentially gave me his blessing in an amicable way that we were fine
I have sent him multiple sincere apologies since.
cause regardless I just didn’t want to cause him pain
There’s a lot more on his end but I’m not gonna drag
I hate that this shit needs to be aired out publicly.”
Maybe Ghastly shouldn’t have gone all out on Twitter trying to knock Ekali down a peg and bring out his dirty laundry
but I do also understand his point of view
If someone sleeps with your recent ex or current girlfriend then it is only reasonable
Ekali is giving away a new Edit Pack V for free for the holidays
It even includes one ID mixed in with “Mo Bamba,” so keep an eye out for that in the future
Any $ you donate will go towards a studio space I am opening pro bono to mentor young musicians and provide them with a space to work in Vancouver

Ekali Edit Pack V by Ekali
MXXI – You used to play bass with Said The Whale ; do you still tour with them
which project are you privileging between this one and Ekali
I think we toured five months last year… But this year we had to take a break
and things have sort of picked up for me over the past few months
I’ve got a lot of time to do things on my own right now because Said The Whale is sort of taking a little bit of a break
I’m not touring anytime soon with them but I am touring pretty much through the whole year on my own as Ekali
I’ve got a lot more time to focus on my own project right now
MXXI – What made you start music production
and playing bass in a band didn’t really allow me to do that
I played the bass parts of the songs and that was it
but I wanted to write full songs with full parts
I tried like playing guitar and singing but that didn’t work out (laughing)
For me picking up computer production was an easy way to learn to compose entire songs
That was the first time since I started producing that I felt in complete control of everything
MXXI – When did you start using electronic gear
E : I started using Ableton maybe fourteen months ago
so if you work on it really really hard it’s not too difficult
you just have to focus and not get distracted by facebook
MXXI – Last year you were part of the Red Bull Music Academy in Tokyo
what has been the impact of this on your way of producing
Before RBMA I was a bedroom producer ; always in my bedroom
With RBMA you get thrown into a room with thirty other people
and you’re making music with them all the time
So now when I make music I sort of tend to seek out collaboration more than I used to
I’ve never spoken to Drake nor to Party Next Door
Basically Drake’s agent emailed me something like : “this song is coming out in four days and we need to make a deal right now”
that’s ridiculous… But they sent me the song
After that it was just a matter of negotiating a deal
so quickly… I had no idea of it before that
MXXI – Are you maybe considering other projects with them later
do you think there is a kind of difference between American and European electronic music
or on the contrary a global movement towards uniformisation
I think that every city and country in the world slowly develops a sound
like for example Detroit techno back in the days
and this movement is still sort of happening
but on a larger scale because of the internet now
In America you’ve got the Soulection sound which is becoming bigger and bigger right now
it’s all coming out… so every sort of area in a world has a different sound I think
And for me for example France is just like very lush chords
that’s what I hear in French producers’ music
it’s very lush break chords… and everybody go with a different sound coming out
But besides we’re all constantly sending each other music
helping each other out… so in that sense there is a sort of global sound emerging
MXXI – Do you have a special interest for French Music
which is cool… they are my two favourite producers right now from France
MXXI – You do lots of remixes – who are your favourite singers currently for whom you would really like to produce an official remix
There’s a guy named Shy Girls from Portland in the US… There are a few rappers I really like right now… Tre Capital
out of LA … There’s a producer named WondaGurl in Canada
I’d love to work on a track with her too… I think I just want to work with everybody
but eventually when I have more original material I want to do a live set
so maybe when that’s done I can do a live set
MXXI – In your dj sets you mix productions of yours with other tracks
like my rap remixes or that kind of stuff… But I try to… I mean
and so they end up playing a lot of their music that isn’t very club-accessible in a club
so I don’t play my chill stuffs live at all
MXXI – Do you already have a release date for your album
I try not to set deadlines on my work just because I don’t like to rush
they tend to not be as good as they could be
MXXI : How many songs would you like to put on it
MXXI – Will there be collaborations on this album
there are a lot of people I want to work with… And speaking of that
Aywy and I have an EP that is almost done now
MXXI – Do you have a special process when you compose a song
I would say that… moods is what I start with
I’ll find vocal samples or add some percussions or drums
I find the mood first cause I think that’s more important
and then the other drums can always come later
MXXI – Would you like one day to have musicians on stage with you
a few of my favourite producers actually do that
and I think that’s a great thing and I’d love to do that
But one thing is that it’s very expensive to pay musicians to play with you
MXXI – We heard that you were learning the violin at a time
I forgot a lot of it but I still know enough to get by
But I’m learning how to play the piano better right now
MXXI – With the idea of integrating piano lines in your music or for a larger use
synths… The keyboard is basically just like the everything instrument you know
but I haven’t really learned the piano fully yet
I want to be able to get it out in 1 minute
I want to able to get it out really quickly
and I think learning piano is going to be the key for that
MXXI – Last but not least : we heard that you were really into video games at some time
do you still have the time to play and if so
I don’t really have the time to play but I do anyway… you know what I mean
(laughing) I play League of Legends a lot right now
and I used to play StarCraft II sort of competitively
so I play that from time to time… League of Legends
Destiny… but I try to keep my hands off of it because it just distracts me from what I should be doing

Music Features
local electronic music artist Ekali—or Nathan Shaw to his friends—was faced with a tough decision: continue playing bass with Juno Award–winning band Said the Whale
a group gearing up for a new album and accompanying world tour
or quit to pursue his budding career in production
“Not for a second,” Shaw tells the Straight on the line from his Vancouver home
but there’s just not enough hours in the day
I was getting tour offers for Asia and Europe
But it’s nice not to have to spend 16 hours a day in a tiny van with the same people for months on end.”
Shaw’s verdict may have raised a collective groan from Whale fans around the world
but they can rest assured that the choice was far from impulsive
Shaw had already been invited to attend the highly prestigious Red Bull Music Academy—an all-expenses-paid trip to Tokyo designed to nurture some of the world’s most talented up-and-coming musicians—and scored two writing credits on Drake’s chart-topping album If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late
“I have no idea how it happened,” Shaw says with a laugh
I got a random email in my inbox saying ‘Drake has used your song
and he wants to put it out on his record.’ I thought it was a hoax until I actually started negotiating with his lawyers.”
Now with two years of producing under his belt
Shaw makes it clear that he’s so much more than just a hip-hop producer
Choosing not to recognize genre—“I know less about that than anybody,” he says—Shaw has created a body of work that weaves through a variety of musical styles
“Intimate is the one word I would use to sum up my style,” he suggests
I want to leave a piece of me in that track
That’s something the Vancouver native is keen to bring out in his set at Surrey’s FVDED in the Park festival this weekend
“I treat this area really carefully,” Shaw says
One easy way to ruin it would be to play Vancouver and the cities around it all the time
So I’ve been trying to perform here only once every four months or so and make sure that the emotion really comes across every time I play
this show is a homecoming for me,” Shaw continues
Ekali plays at FVDED in the Park at Surrey’s Holland Park on Saturday (July 2)

Ekali has been hyping a number of upcoming collaborations all year but the one that has continued to catch our eye is his track alongside Skrillex
After releasing his Crystal Eyes EP on Skrillex’s OWSLA imprint last year
there have been a number of signs that this collaboration was in the works
Ekali took to social media following his back to back sets at Beyond Wonderland and Buku last weekend to share videos of his set
Ekali shared a dramatic trap anthem and tagged Skrillex in the caption
which is a major sign that their collab is not mere conception

It’s that time of year again when we rewind 2018 and give you the best trap & bass songs of the year
A ton of familiar faces from past years made the cut
as well as several new rising artists that had a great years as well
Stream all of our selections below and let us know how we did in the comments section as well
Here’s to bigger and better trap songs in 2019
*Written & compiled by Max Chung & Nick Isasi
Vincent has been a RTT favorite for a minute now so we’re more than excited to include his ‘Dua’ flip in the 10th spot on our list
Everything about this track is high-energy
from the infectious rap verses to the in-your-face
Remember when this song was an ID? We were HUNGRY for the official release. ‘Feel Free’ is one of the heavier tracks on RL Grime’s anticipated NOVA album and it certainly doesn’t disappoint
Grime’s expertise in creating different styles of music is on full display here as an ethereal
organic introduction paves the way for the high-octane trap drop
Was there a more anticipated track of 2018? It’s hard to say. What So Not first wrote the demo back in 2014… after four years of tweaking with Skrillex we finally got the final version of ‘Goh.’ Every section of this song effortlessly creates a different emotion – a quality that truly sets this song apart in 2018
While this track just recently dropped, we were hard-pressed to not include TYNAN’s insane ‘Pressure’ remix in our top 10
The second drop had fans thirsting over the official release for months
easily being one of the most inventive and hard-hitting song out of all of the official NOVA remixes to be released
On Soundcloud this track is tagged with the genre ‘Freeform Bass’ and it’s easily the most fitting description. PEEKABOO had an impressive year and this track is clearly evident of that
The build-up is just tense enough to have you salivating even before the first drop
It’s hard to find a record that goes as hard live as Eptic’s ‘Watch Out’ does. Everyone from Skrillex to Marshmello played this one out and it’s easy to hear why once you get to the first drop
Eptic (as always) dropped a ton of heat this past year and we can’t wait to see what he’s got in store for us next
Hekler and Gladez both had huge years and it all started with their ‘404’ collaboration
If you made your way to any bass music set in 2018
The break right before the drop will leave you just enough time to catch your breath before going ballistic
Boombox Cartel’s production has always been next level
but their “Moon Love” original – in particular – is truly a work of art
The hip-hop/trap hybrid set a new precedent for how hard 130-bpm trap can go
We can’t wait to see what Boombox Cartel has in store for us heading into 2019 and beyond
It’s only fitting that the #1 spot goes to ODESZA for finally dropping the trap banger they’ve been sitting on and teasing at live shows for years
From the epic drums to anthemic melodies “Loyal” is captivating from start to finish
and is easily the best brass-driven trap song to grace the world since TNGHT’s ‘Higher Ground.’ Its also been featured in Apple’s latest iPhone commercials

Well isn’t this exciting. The other night at New York’s Terminal 5, Alison Wonderland surprised fans by dropping Skrillex’s unreleased remix of Ekali and Denzel Curry’s ‘Babylon’ original
While there’s no release date at the moment
thanks to Ekali’s tweet below we know that the remix also credits Ronny J and will be apart of the record’s official remix package
Check out the video and start getting hyped for these tracks

he claims there was “infidelity on both sides,” and that “this person contributed to a magnitude of toxicity within the relationship which reignited many past demons of mine.” Sam Black responded to the statement quickly

the police documentation that Sam Black is referring to has not surfaced
We’ll continue updating this story as it develops
Previously: Last night, Ekali‘s former fiancée Sam Black posted what she claims is just a “small part of the story of who the real Ekali is,” and put forth a detailed account of her horrific experience with the artist. Deciding to come forward with the story after Ekali (Nathan Shaw) had slept with a mutual friend’s girlfriend after Black had kicked him out of their house
and lying that occurred during their relationship
you really f**cked his girlfriend in his house when he took you in after I kicked you out because the police came to our home (after your manager and best friend told me to call the cops on you because they can’t even handle you),” the statement from Sam Black reads
“And when the cops wanted to arrest you for domestic violence assault and battery after you abused me verbally and physically
but I still helped you by not pressing charges that day but instead asked the police to 5150 you
so that you don’t lose your visa and get permanent record.”
They came and wanted to charge and arrest him for domestic violence but I asked them to take him as a 5150 so he wouldn’t have a record.”
Sam Black continued to share stories she received to confirm the allegations of cheating
She has also asked for others out there who have the courage “to come clean and tell me” about other accounts of Ekali’s behavior that happened while they were dating or engaged
she’s released multiple screenshots from many who have stepped forward to share their stories
while also sharing DMs from those who have been contacted by Ekali since the story surfaced
Ekali has not made a statement on the matter
nor has his management responded to our inquiry
