to share more details about the field and maybe give real-world examples we ended up discussing counterfeiting and how to detect such goods online which turned out to be an engaging conversation My mornings typically start with listening to music or the radio over a cup of coffee while I review my list of pending projects and prioritise deadlines I usually start the day with a couple of team calls to align on tasks or client discussions on IP disputes though these are typically handled in the afternoon unless they are urgent On a typical day my work involves a blend of strategies and brainstorming drafting or reviewing documents and agreements and staying updated on IP case-law and industry trends Other days start with hearings before the IP Office’s commissions for appeals or cancellations/ revocations I’m handling and coordinating a trademark infringement case abroad It involves working closely with local counsel to strategise enforcement and a potential settlement to achieve a swift and cost–effective end of the dispute All while ensuring the client’s rights remain protected in a foreign market and I make sure that everything is handled on time my days often involve shifting between various IP matters (advising clients It all depends on the urgency of the tasks at hand IP is my passion and gives me the opportunity to work at the intersection of law and creativity whether it’s securing or enforcing an IP right or developing strategies It is a constantly evolving field that keeps me challenged and engaged One of the toughest parts of being an IP professional is managing the high stakes or navigating infringement cases can all have a significant impact on the future of a business especially with the emerging technologies and the constant changes in legislation and case law being able to tackle these challenges and deliver successful results for the clients in addition to the expected characteristics and skills of a lawyer Many people assume that IP is not a priority until their business grows and copyrights early on provides a strong foundation for scaling a business and attracting investors Failing to protect IP from the start can lead to significant risks such as delays or obstacles in obtaining registrations sensitive information such as valuable business strategies weakening a company’s position on the market and among its competitors and discovering shared interests and passions I appreciate the differences in perspectives that challenge my views shaping not only my personal interactions but also how I approach professional projects and my ability to adapt and evolve Lately I’ve been drawn to the idea of and I’m still considering taking classes to learn more about floristry and the art of designing arrangements and bouquets I do believe that there’s something about blending colours scents and mixing different flowers that feels like the careful and creative work IP implies I like to think that my younger self was open to advice and eager to learn from those with more experience My advice would be to always keep an open mind and embrace work challenges and ensuring that what is important to He tells the class that people have called the police on him because they thought he was trespassing on private property. But Gregory Wolfus, D.V.M., V98, is director of the Tufts at Tech Community Veterinary Clinic and associate clinical professor at Cummings School He’s there to teach the students about implicit bias or a prejudice they hold of which they may not be aware What did they think to themselves when they first saw him It’s exactly the kind of exercise that course director Florina Tseng wanted for the students in her Diversity and Professional Perspectives (DPP) I and II courses for first- and second-year veterinary students “The two classes grew out of a course on professionalism and they began because we felt a need for our students to have basic knowledge of diversity which would set the stage for expectations of professional conduct throughout their time here and after they graduate,” said Tseng who is the associate dean for diversity Tseng discusses systemic racism through a lens of veterinary medicine including how racism throughout the history of the profession has resulted in a largely white field with Black veterinarians making up just 2% of veterinarians in the United States today She also talks about different forms of identity—gender etc.—and puts students through exercises that encourage them to discover and challenge their biases And she outlines anti-racist steps students can take on their own path from being an ally against racism to being an advocate for the kinds of changes necessary to reduce such issues Students also learn about power dynamics and microaggressions—which can be verbal or behavioral and communicate indirect or unintentional discrimination—including how they manifest and how they can handle conflicts that can arise because of them noted Tseng—microaggressions are not things people do deliberately and it’s a matter of making people aware that even if their intent was not to offend or hurt other people that does not necessarily correlate with the impact their comments or actions had on another person.  “This is where the class discussions got meatier,” said Jenna Yoshimi while working in a veterinary clinic at a time when a lot of anti-Asian hate was going on some clients refused to see or have their pets touched by Asian members of the staff I could see that it was difficult for her to bring this up with me in the discussion circle—I'm Japanese and creating that space to acknowledge it is the first step toward greater understanding.” students were asked to envision that they were newly graduated from veterinary school and working in a small animal general practice they overhear a receptionist tell a client I'll make sure you are seen by the lead veterinarian.” The students had to imagine what feelings would come up if they would give feedback to the receptionist If students expressed feelings of discomfort or a desire to avoid such an interaction the course instructors encouraged them to dig deeper as to why.  students write a one-page essay about their thoughts on their implicit biases and how they think they may handle those biases in the future and Tseng says she is often inspired to see how deeply students are thinking about these issues “My essay was about expanding perspectives,” said Sasha Fong “It's easy for many of us to go about our lives without putting ourselves into someone else's shoes or taking a minute to understand their perspective and realizing that life for each individual is different and we all come from very different backgrounds And to be exposed to people that come from all different walks of life and learning their personal stories and really listening to the lessons that they took from that experience I think was really important.” Tseng said the discussion of racial bias can help the students apply the principles to address other kinds of biases in their second-year course during which they focus on things that are associated with accommodations Accommodations for preclinical students can include extra time to take exams or complete assignments or seating solutions for students who aren’t able to stand for long lab exercises.  “We wanted to expose the students to this early on in their careers here because some are not even aware that they can have some of these accommodations,” Tseng said “About 20% of our students have an accommodation so it's good for students to see that they do not provide an unfair advantage accommodations bring some students to the same level as non-disabled people and neurotypical people.” Fong said she was surprised by the breadth of resources available to students she anticipated learning core skills like biochemistry and physiology but did not expect “the important ‘soft skills’ that we all need to have as adults and professionals,” as she called them “I hope the students take the material seriously and use it to think about other people how they as individuals are affected by biases and how they can be an ally both while they’re here and after they graduate,” said Tseng Two bear cubs have been killed after being hit by a vehicle in the northwestern prefecture of Florina The remains of the two bears were found on Monday morning by motorists on the Florina-Kozani national road the Florina-based environmental group that specializes in the protection of Greece’s bear and wolf populations went to the scene and found that the bears had been born his year and were 6-7 months old The scientists noticed that the cubs’ mother was nearby and may not have been aware that her cubs had been killed Arcturos representative Panos Stefanou said that “they immediately removed the two dead animals from the scene in order to avoid further involvement with the mother who refused to leave the scene while she saw her two cubs on the road.” Boston is arguably one of the East Coast's most Italian cities While the city might have been settled and initially populated by British colonists and the mascot of its NBA team is a leprechaun every corner of Boston is seemingly brimming with the flavors and culinary ethos of Italy I've had the pleasure of experiencing Boston's vivacious pizza scene first-hand for many years. And while I'll be the first person to admit that I am one of the biggest pizza snobs out there, I've also grown to love and appreciate the various pizza styles and topping combinations that the city has to offer I've created a list of some of the best spots to pick up a whole pie or just a slice in the Boston area based on this experience as well as recommendations from pizza-loving friends living in the city All of these spots hone-in on the craftsmanship and skill required to craft the perfect and offer an array of high-quality ingredients that make their pies unique No tour of Boston's pizza scene would be complete without a stop at Florina Pizzeria in Beacon Hill. This shop specializes in tantalizing Sicilian-style and standard, New York-style pizza slices — although its menu also boasts an impressive array of hot and cold paninis If I'm traveling through the Boston area and craving pizza this is one of my go-to stops — and it's easy to see why If you order a single slice; you won't have to worry about walking away hungry because Florina serves you a quarter of a pie The Sicilian selections are also drool-worthy; the crust is perfectly soft and fluffy and the shop adds the perfect amount of cheese to each pie — not too much florinapizza.com The best word to describe Union Park Pizza is "sophisticated." This isn't a greasy slice joint; its pies are only available in 10-inch and 16-inch sizes and covered in some of the tastiest toppings that Boston's pizza scene has to offer The highlight of this spot, besides its creative medley of pre-built pie options, is its crust. The dough is made with flour imported from Italy. It has that perfect flavor balance that won't send you reaching for the salt shaker. This is also a great restaurant for folks who like a Neapolitan-style pizza with some separation of crust and state (meaning I also admire how the pizzaiolos at Union Park are able to get a light color and slightly soft (yet still sturdy) bake on the bottom of the crust and something that you just have to experience (and eat) for yourself unionparkpizza.com Chelsea is a relatively small town located right across the Mystic River from Boston It's home to a delicious wood-fired pizza joint which boasts some of the best Neapolitan pies that the Boston area has to offer You'll find many pie options adorned with house-made fennel sausage which are perfect for any carnivores that you may be dining with so you can order one for yourself and eat it in a single sitting take a piece of advice for me and order several different pies for your party to share And if you're still feeling hungry at the end of your meal ciaopizzaandpasta.com Area Four is also widely known for adding creative spins to classic pies it uses soppressata on its Not Pepperoni pizza and adds a refreshing heat to its Clam Oreganato pie with chilis areafour.com If you're passing through Back Bay or East Boston you're primed to stop at one of Dirty Water Dough's locations The menu at each restaurant varies slightly so you're better off taking a peek at the website before you make the trek over The pizza dough here is soft and perfectly risen thanks in part to the addition of the brand's in-house Dirty Water IPA The selection of specialty pies at Dirty Water Dough is quite extensive but it's clear that this shop doesn't sacrifice quantity for quality You can order Boston-inspired pies like the Big Papi Dirty Water is also very accommodating of different dietary preferences; you can order your pie with a gluten-free crust or turn any of its signature pies into a hand-held calzone dirtywaterdough.com it's many Somerville residents' go-to spot for pizza While the sub sandwiches at this joint are no joke the pizza is one big draw for visitors far and wide Its pizza menu is absolutely loaded with both white and red pies — as well as the option to go Roman rather than round Roman-style pizza has a more focaccia-like base that comes out of the oven crispy topped with feta and house-made gorgonzola sauce The same goes for the Cousin Vinny: a white pie covered with a garlic cream sauce mortadellahead.com Max and Leo's is a newcomer on the Boston-area pizza scene This restaurant has four locations in Chelmsford who only began their pizza making journey in 2010 Max and Leo's focus is on coal-fired pies — which have a noticeably sootier flavor than wood or gas-fired pies This flavor really meshes well with Max and Leo's selection of quality toppings This is not the spot you go if you have a problem with char on your pizza but this just adds to the magic of biting into a slice served by one of Boston's best pizza spots maxandleospizza.com so time is of the essence if you want a cheesy Equally as famous as the pizza at this spot are the arancini — fried rice balls — and the potato panzerotti instagram.com/galleriaumberto Although Source is well-known for its pepperoni pizza there are also other equally tantalizing pies on its menu Folks who love seafood will enjoy the One If By Clam Two If By Sea — featuring fried whole clams if you're lucky enough to stop by for brunch Guests can also choose between Neapolitan and New York-style pizzas for the restaurant's build-your-own offer they can opt to transform one of their favorite signature pies into a calzone The pairing of perfectly blistered pies and creative toppings is just one of the many things that sets Source apart from other Boston pizzerias sourcerestaurants.com If you like a perfectly bubbly crust accented with char marks you'll love the pies at Si Cara in Cambridge It also offers select varieties of pan pizza but the draw for many eaters to this chic spot is undoubtedly its Canotto-style pie — a variety that's not quite Neapolitan Canotto means "inflatable boat," and refers to the ballooning Besides the obvious difference in appearance this pizza style is also often made with a preferment (such as poolish) that helps add to the flavor and ensures a long The long story short is that Canotto is all about patience and craftsmanship — and Si Cara is at the intersection of it The toppings on Si Cara's fluffy pizzas are not too-far-out-there is made with a deliciously flavored leek kimchi which complements the smoked mozzarella that also adorns the pie which is kind of like a pizza-fied version of an eggplant parm — plus burrata and arugula on top sicarapizza.com the real draw to this cozy spot is the pizza Its toppings scream true Italian — which makes sense considering it imports the ingredients for its pies While you can order a plain cheese by the slice or as a whole pie the better option would be to try its more exciting options prove that pineapple isn't the only fruit that belongs on pizza Pizzeria Rustico is closed on Sundays and only serves dinner from 4 p.m But it is open for lunch and dinner starting at 11 a.m rusticoboston.com Regina Pizzeria is one of the most talked-about pizza spots in the city — and for good reason It's been serving customers for nearly a century and opened locations across Massachusetts and New England which opened its doors in the North End in 1926 features an extensive brick-oven pizza menu with nearly every topping under the sun you can't find a pre-built pizza that you like you can always build your own with one of three sauces and an impressive lineup of traditional and premium toppings There's seemingly no wrong choice on Regina's menu But its cheese pizza alone has gained attention from patrons who professed his love for Regina's during one of his pizza reviews pizzeriaregina.com What's more perfect than pizza and ice cream you can have this heavenly combination — and more Its pies are made with a cold-ferment sourdough which means that each has a delectably soft bite and subtle tangy flavor Picco's pies are also set apart from others by their distinguished char or its mushroom and Brie pizza with caramelized onions and arugula And if you can't decide what to order for your pizza fear not; many of its pies can be made into half-and-half options so you can enjoy two of your favorite pizzas on the same charred base And don't forget to get a scoop or hand-packed quart of ice cream or sorbet on your way out piccoboston.com Ernesto's Pizza is your quintessential Boston slice joint It has a location right on the Boston Freedom Trail in the North End which makes it the perfect stop on your tour of the historic city Ernesto's menu is relatively pared down; They will send you to your grave with a Yiddish curse as easily as they will strangle you with their bare hands they will fight to the death for their homeland like babushkas are doing right now in Putin’s barbaric war on Ukraine At our Forest Hills apartment building full of striving immigrants the bosses were the babushkas who marched through the streets with grocery bags filled with pierogies caviar and other delicacies—and hunted vragi all the way from Woodhaven Boulevard to Grand Central Parkway After my babushka had taken a few classes with Avi My cousins and I peeked into Avi’s apartment a few times a week to see our babushkas shielding they were strutting through Key Food with a Krav Maga swagger Because Krav Maga teaches people to constantly anticipate attacks and to think strategically in an instant it made my already suspicious babushka extra paranoid and combative—especially when it came to my dad What was even worse than his living and breathing was his overblown generosity The common refrain among my dad’s friends was “Vlad pay.” Vlad pay for restaurant my dad allowed leeches in the tri-state area and beyond to suck the blood out of our bank account “He isn’t just taking food out of his family’s mouth. He’s orchestrating mass starvation of the Ukrainian people!” my babushka proclaimed Opinions on the cold war brewing in our apartment were mixed Some friends and relatives believed my babushka should’ve kicked my dad’s ass already while others thought he was a saint for letting my grandparents live with us and this was one situation in which elder abuse would be justified and having secretive conversations on the phone My babushka heard from her spies Esther and Bella that he was “shtupping a shluha”—screwing a slut—who lived in nearby Rego Park they wouldn’t divulge her name to my babushka The hang-up calls soon had a baby crying in the background which meant my dad had fathered a ubludok—a bastard Because he was “carrying out a pogrom on his own family,” my babushka prepared for combat my babushka and I were buying some brisket at Key Food Standing in line next to us was a plain young woman with a stroller When her baby started crying and she picked him up to comfort him “I don’t think he looks that much like him,” I whispered as she sneered at me she turned to the young woman and asked her Because he looks just like a ubludok!” The woman gasped shielding her baby from an imminent attack “You can’t hurt a baby—that’s a war crime!” I exclaimed as I grabbed the brisket and ushered my babushka out of Key Food she waited for my dad to come home from work while my pulse quickened at the thought of my tiny babushka fighting my boxer dad He put her in a bear hug to immobilize her He’d never hit a woman—especially a babushka—and she knew it she went in with a horizontal elbow strike as he tried in vain to block her counted for 10 seconds as my dad lay there while my mom knelt next to him with smelling salts my dedushka raised my babushka’s fist in victory The hang-up calls stopped and my dad started spending more time at home Having a son turned my dad into a family man Though he eventually started partying again my babushka’s watchful eye and iron fist reined him in A couple of days ago I sat at my kitchen table eating the cheese blintzes I made with my babushka’s recipe and thinking of the badass babushkas currently defending Ukraine with iPhones I fear that they’re no match for Russia’s military strength and savagery But in recalling my dad passed out on the floor I realize that we shouldn’t underestimate the power of one’s love for their family and homeland As defense expert John Arquilla recently said “Grandmas with iPhones can trump satellites.” Putin should know better than to mess with babushkas To contact the author, email [email protected] Florina Rodov has written for The Atlantic She was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in nonfiction The views and opinions expressed in this article are the author’s own and do not necessarily reflect those of the Forward. Bush called "the soft bigotry of low expectations" because they were Black and Latino Far from the deadbeats I expected to encounter at the Washington Heights high school where I taught English The teachers' lounge was an echo chamber of adoration for Michael Moore documentaries diatribes about America's hunger for war—accompanied by the refrain "Bush lied people died" repeated ad nauseum—and promises to move to Canada I suspected that this ideology seeped into the classroom A couple of my colleagues showed their students documentaries like Why We Fight which I believe portrays America as a prison industrial complex with no redeeming qualities Others repeatedly said that their students couldn't pass Advanced Placement exams even when they'd taken AP classes In the Herculean effort to prepare students for college I believe there is no room for the unchallenged belief that our country is irreparably broken and the system is rigged against people of color where the student population was mostly Hispanic and African-American Therefore, I told my students that they were architects of their own destiny, hard work and good choices matter, and America is the only country in the world where you can grow up without electricity or hot water and become Oprah Winfrey While there were many "culturally responsive" books in my independent reading library that students read in their own time So-called "anti-racists" may be surprised to learn that Thornton Wilder's Our Town set in the fictional rural town of Grover's Corners was especially popular with my urban sophomores Two of my students played George and Emily when we read the play aloud then students wrote heartfelt stories set in towns of their choosing that incorporated the play's universal themes of family they embraced the challenge of mastering how to write analytical essays 90 percent of them passed in an English department whose pass rate was 60 percent I'll never forget the pride on their faces when I told them that their scores were comparable to scores in much wealthier and whiter schools we talked about the specific steps they could take to become successful such as attending Columbia University's Double Discovery Program or Minds Matter first-generation students get into college Through casual conversations that we had a few minutes before class, most of my kids also developed their own version of the "success sequence." It looked something like this: Graduate from high school and college and don't have kids until you're married and/or can support them without handouts A couple of my colleagues side-eyed me for my anti-wokeness They thought that when I said things like "don't have kids until you can support them without handouts" I was being judgmental about my students' families' lifestyles Some of my colleagues thought that I lacked empathy but I think I was just encouraging common-sense behavior I didn't talk to my students about politics explicitly until the 2008 presidential election when "hope and change" posters adorned our school's walls and the teachers' lounge resounded with breathless chatter about the charismatic young senator from Illinois who would hopefully become the first Black president In preparation for a pre-election assembly, I had my students research both Barack Obama and John McCain's positions on issues as well as their strengths and weaknesses as candidates making sure to read the Wall Street Journal American Spectator and National Review—not just the New York Times They then wrote persuasive essays on the candidate of their choice I picked Amalia's piece about McCain's decades of public service and numerous military awards to represent our class at assembly I heard that some kids from another class were planning to "jump" her after school if she read her essay aloud but I wasn't going to sacrifice a child for even the inalienable right of free speech I believe culture wars have hijacked the classroom schools are training "anti-racists" by creating "affinity groups" for students and parents of certain ethnicities while also teaching Critical Race Theory (CRT) and concepts such as white privilege some politicians are limiting discussions of race in the classroom trying to rewrite curriculum standards to align with a "patriotic" mindset and banning books The left accuses the right of fascism while the right accuses the left of indoctrination students should learn about CRT and "antiracism," but as ideas and these ideas should be balanced with other perspectives Kendi's How to Be an Antiracist and Robin DiAngelo's White Fragility they should also read John McWhorter's Woke Racism and Shelby Steele's White Guilt they should read historians' criticisms of it as well Students should learn about America's sins as well as its exceptionalism I wish I'd been a little more measured in my approach When I left the school and my students graduated One of them opened up to me about the fact that I'd been so set in my mission and confident in my beliefs that she was hesitant to disagree with me She believed that I should have recommended more kids for opportunity programs that helped them get into college She said she didn't tell me this at the time as she was afraid I would no longer like her But I believe I would find today's conditions untenable because of the extreme positions on the left and right Some say that politics doesn't belong in the classroom and maybe they're right but it might be impossible to keep it out completely because teaching is a values-driven profession Florina Rodov is a former public and charter school teacher whose work has been published at CNN, The Atlantic, Shondaland and others. Florina Jurt talk 2028 Florina and Katharina Jurt finish each other’s races the 18-year-olds from Switzerland also do the sentence thing and they do it a lot That’s what happens when you spend 24 hours a day with the person you’ve pretty much never been separated from — ever The only time that the Jurt twins would appear to be apart is when they’re competing in Relay events When it came time for the decisive Laser Run in the Women’s Relay on the opening day of the UIPM 2023 U19 Pentathlon World Championships Florina had to stand and watch as Katharina ran away from her They reconnected briefly at the changeover and by the time Florina came back to the finishing line there was her technically older sister waiting with open arms By finishing one another’s race so brilliantly on that day Even for a family as remarkably sporting and successful as theirs it was a big But it would appear that winning while twinning is sweetest of all “It is still kind of hard to realise what we have achieved in this year but we’re really happy to achieve what we have “It was the highlight because we could start together and come together on the finish line and celebrate together.” “It’s always better together!” interjects Florina live together and we’re 24 hours a day together … so to win together is so special.” Over 30 minutes of lively conversation between the Jurts and UIPM News They talked about a hunger to defend their world title dreams of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games their potent prowess in the new Obstacle discipline and what their brief down time looks like While the twins often jump in to agree or expand or emphasise something the other is saying That part surely comes when they leave the calm of the bedroom which they share Because though they may be world champions once they step into their home the twins are just two-ninths of a big and raucous Jurt family Sixteen years separate the oldest of their seven siblings and the youngest with the twins landing right in the middle of the nine children Eldest sister Anna is an elite pentathlete ranked inside the world’s top 40 Marlena was also on that track until serious injury intervened The full family list goes a little like this: Christian (24) You ask Florina and Katharina if there are more Jurt pentathletes in the pipeline after them and both nod vigorously and smile At least part of the sports influence comes from mother Barbara With Anna hunting a place at the Olympics in Paris and the twins having put in the best season of their young careers you wonder how much Pentathlon talk there was when the family all gathered in Bern over the festive period when Florina and Katharina also celebrated their 18th birthdays “Actually when we have family time it’s more family talk rather than Pentathlon talk,” smiles Katharina “All of us are of course very sports-focused but with family it’s more about relax and games time.” “Our birthday gift was to relax in a hotel and there was a jumping room where you could do challenges and so we of course had to be the best,” adds Florina “At Christmas we had challenges with groups a team event because we were I think 20 people with boyfriends and grandparents We did a lot of games together and it was very cool but very competitive.” It would be natural for some level of competition between the twins too As well as their Relay excellence they put in brilliant individual performances at the UIPM 2023 Laser Run World Championships in Bath (GBR) where they took home Biathle silver and bronze “We don’t see each other much as competition it’s more of a push for each other,” insists Florina Katharina agrees: “For the World Cup in Fencing she qualified but I did not because I didn’t perform good But I was so grateful and happy for her because of what she achieved so I think I can handle a situation like that Their Laser Run prowess — Katharina also teamed up with Paris-bound Alexandre Dallenbach for a Mixed Relay gold at the Laser Run Worlds last year — is to be expected Anna is also a formidable talent in the combined discipline But where the twins already have a head start on their sister The entire Jurt family enjoy a gathering over Christmas When they soared to Relay gold in Istanbul (TUR) it was a blistering performance in the newest discipline which helped catapult them into contention “We did many sports disciplines when we were younger apart from Pentathlon and one of those was gymnastics So we had a connection to that kind of challenge: we knew that the strength and the grip in our hands was good It’s a lot of upper body but also feeling your body You really have to feel the movements on the Obstacles and I think that’s a big plus point for us.” In the euphoria of that winning moment last July both twins spoke of dreams of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics But it was only later in October that the IOC thanks in part to UIPM’s successful integration of Obstacle confirmed that Modern Pentathlon would indeed be on the programme in Tinseltown but now with Obstacle in we really know that we can target it,” says Katharina it’s a new discipline and we’re good at it.” But first there is a Jurt chasing Olympic dreams in 2024 every single one of us in the family will go — for sure,” smiles Florina And there is also a World Championship for the twins to defend “We’re looking forward to that probably the most,” says Florina “We’re so proud to be there as world champions but it also puts a little bit of pressure on you there are then maybe people who think that we’ll do it again That puts a kind of pressure but it’s a good pressure.” The Jurts can finish each other’s sentences Subscribe Waiting for the morning train to Thessaloniki This is the seventh part in a series about a journey across what used to be called Macedonia To get from Bitola (North Macedonia) to Thessaloniki (Greece) after yet another fruitless due diligence visit to the railway and bus stations I decided to hire a taxi to travel the twenty miles across the border to Florina I arranged for the taxi to collect me at the Hotel Theatre at 7:45 a.m. which allowed me a last breakfast in the lobby restaurant not knowing if the North Macedonia – Greece border would involve some extra steps around the bureaucratic dance floor On the train line in the Vardar valley from Skopje to Thessaloniki the border crossing can take several hours given that the frontier town of Gevgelija is an entry point into the European Union My taxi driver had some English and used the ride south (about 35 minutes) to bemoan the political situation in North Macedonia—the crummy schools He went on: wages are 300 euros a month; the Greeks resent the name and presence of North Macedonia (and have taken over its territory); all the money is in the hands of local mobsters; casinos are springing up; Albania has the Slavic warm water and beaches; tourists only go to Ohrid if they come at all to North Macedonia; and the train line to Florina has yet to start running When I asked him more about the €19 million EU cross-border train link he gave the standard local reply: “Who would use it anyhow?” the road passage through customs between North Macedonia and Greece was a breeze A few minutes later the still talkative taxi driver dropped me at the Florina train station (decorated with graffiti) where a cold rain was slanting against the foggy windows I thought of going to a nearby café for coffee Nor can I say that Florina in the rain had much appeal for a walk I ended up spending about hour in the gloomy waiting room until the inbound train arrived from Thessaloniki (Florina is the last stop) and outbound passengers were allowed to board I was still unsure of my plans for the day I wanted to spend the day in Thessaloniki and then catch a sleeper in the direction of Turkey Those plans only existed in my “ideal train world” (Nirvana with waiting rooms…) running in any direction in which I am headed I knew from my timetables that the night train from Athens and Thessaloniki no longer ran to Edirne and Istanbul At some point it had become a casualty of deteriorating foreign relations between Greece and Turkey Lacking detailed information on trains heading east from Thessaloniki I decided to wait on my pending travel decision until I could check the departure board in the Thessaloniki main station For the train ride in the rain, I had a thermos of hot tea, maps of Greece and Turkey, and Alan Furst’s novel, Spies of the Balkans which is set in Thessaloniki at the start of World War II I had read it before but carried it along on my Kindle to be reminded of the political intrigue between Germany his beat is the human emotion and political courage that followed the outbreak of the European war in 1939 while sometimes professional spies or politicians confronted with the fascist threat men and women thrown into a desperate situation that requires them to deliver refugees to Istanbul or stolen documents to MI5 the hero is a laconic Greek police official who in 1940 watches as Thessaloniki begins to fill up with German and Turkish operatives—all of whom are scheming for the collapse of the wobbly Greek state While most of Furst’s plots feature Nazi rapacity (not to mention night trains the pleasure of his novels are his historical asides such as this description in Spies of the city the Greeks would prefer to call Constantinople And the Turkish armies had retaken Smyrna in 1922: burned the town slaughtered the Greek population and changed the name to Izmir In the following year a treaty was signed: three hundred and fifty thousand Turks left Greece and a million and a half Greeks came to Greece from Turkey where they hadn’t lived for a thousand years there was still a taverna called Smyrna Betrayed located on what had once been known as Basil-the-Slayer-of-Bulgars Street Easy enough to find new names in a city where the wars outnumbered the streets If you’re ever looking for memorable and affordable European travels buy a few Furst novels and ride a succession of trains and plotting on my maps the next stage of my journey At this point my only fixed booking was a return ticket home from Istanbul in a week’s time I would have decided to linger in Thessaloniki for a few days but it was now December and the trade off was this: if I stayed a night or two I would have to skip the battlefields of Gallipoli at the Turkish end of my trip Maybe after a brief stop in Thessaloniki (where I had been several times before) I could get to the Greek city of Alexandroupolis in eastern Macedonia I was drawn to the distant port city as it made cameo appearances in many histories I had read about the Balkans—sometimes as the Turkish city of Dedeagach but other times under Bulgarian control The current name dated to the Greek “liberation” in 1920 when the Allies used the 1919 Peace of Paris and the Treaty of Neuilly-sur-Seine to take Dedeagach from Bulgaria and give it to Greece which it serves as a port in eastern Macedonia Florina is on the southern side of the mountains that now define the border between North Macedonia and Greece the train snaked through defiles and valleys that no doubt had seen heavy fighting in the campaigns of World War I Now they form a landscape of small farms and rolling hills that bake in summer and freeze in winter After about an hour the train emerged onto a broad plain and passed not far from Pella but there was no easy connection from the rail line So I satisfied myself with a later reading of Mary Renault’s fine biography in which she writes: “To the end of his days he [Alexander] kept the Iliad under his pillow along with the dagger for self-defence which was the commonplace bedroom furniture of a Macedonian king.” In the meantime all I could so was look out the window and read Furst (“…the train was classified as an express just chugged slowly south across the… plain past snow-covered fields where crows waited on the bare branches of the trees like a countryside in a poem or a dream….”) He captures the Byzantine politics of the Second World War in the Balkans with this long passage Britain severed diplomatic ties with Roumania because the government had allowed Germany to concentrate numerous divisions of the Wehrmacht it was reported that Hitler met with certain Yugoslav heads of ministries at his alpine retreat in Berchtesgaden Note the position of the minister’s head – is he bowing The ministers had been informed that their country would have to comply with certain provisions of the Axis pact To wit: increased economic cooperation with Germany – sell us what we want we’ll name the price – permission for the transit of German men and arms through Yugoslavia and passivity in the event of a German occupation of Bulgaria What wasn’t in the newspapers: BULGARIA CALLS FOR GENERAL MOBILIZATION was: BULGARIA SIGNS NON-AGGRESSION PACT WITH TURKEY Zannis read a quote from the agreement about the two countries’ intention ‘to continue their policy of confidence towards each other which policy assures the security of peace and quiet in the Balkans in a most difficult moment through mutual consideration of their security.’ Which meant: When Bulgaria invades Greece And the phrase ‘peace and quiet in the Balkans’ did not originate with either Bulgarian or Turkish diplomats No wonder Zannis sleeps with his service revolver at this bedside graffiti-ed train pulled into Thessaloniki’s hulking (almost Germanic) main station where I checked my bag and found a ticket window to explore my options for heading east The agent on duty said that the last train of the day (needless to say not a sleeper with a dining car) departed at 3:25 p.m and that I would arrive on a replacement bus in Alexandroupolis around midnight On this day the train was only running as far as the town of Drama (near the ancient city of Philippi which was fought over in the Roman civil wars that followed Caesar’s assassination) I didn’t love the replacement bus connection or the arrival time but I bought a ticket on the afternoon train (was it The Mark Antony?) figuring that it’s what a character in a Furst novel would do if heading for the Turkish border in December rain Next: Around Thessaloniki and the struggle for Macedonian independence. On Sunday evening the “In the Shadow” singer finally posted on the app again — some 24 hours after a difficult result in Paris. A fan favourite from the moment her song snippet was released, Florina faced the indignity of coming dead last with the professional jury on Saturday, receiving the dreaded nil points. It left much of the fandom shook. But their shock pales in comparison to the ordeal their queen has faced. “Hello to everyone, I am sorry to not have talked to you earlier,” she says on Insta. “I felt really bad but want to thank you for your support and your votes… it was unbelievable. I wanted to make you proud and represent the colours of my country.” “To be the only contestant to receive zero points from the international juries is something I can’t understand. Right now, I’d just like to know why the response was this negative. “For the next few days I will take some time off social media and stay with my family. I’ll get back on track and recover even if it’s not always easy and become stronger. I want to thank Vidaa, Christophe Willem and André Manoukian for putting me in your top four and giving something back to me, it means a lot to me. I love you.” Pourquoi je me retire… A post shared by •F??????• (@florinaperez) on Jan 13, 2019 at 11:36am PST Florina’s message has been received with great sympathy, with fans and even fellow contestants encouraging her to keep singing. Semi-Final 1 winner Bilal Hassani wrote: “You were splendid, wonderful Florina.” “It was unfair and I give you all the courage to move forward — keep shining bright!” “You did your part perfectly, you didn’t let yourself down….in life I never lose — either I win or I learn. Never forget this phrase!” Why do you think the juries snubbed Florina? What advice do you have for her moving forward? Do you think taking a break from social media is a good idea? You can follow him on Instagram @williamleeadams and Twitter @willyleeadams The song was nice but sounded derivative of Diamonds and Chandelier it would be hard to imagine her representing France she sang terribly wrong during the contest She couldn’t handle the tone of it’s own song During her presentation cutscene she confesced to have never followed any music lesson to know how to sing properly On that point one of her team member say that she have an “intuitive voice” you cannot be part of such a contest if you don’t know how to sing there were a lot of similarity between her song and Chandelier of Sya and maybe the… Read more » It wasn’t a mature enough song (“shadow of the world” would never be a lyric in a chart-topper obviously her voice could’ve used some work Good production and a good outline but those lyrics didn’t deserve to qualify Lol did you just compare “1944” to this generic “Diamonds” rip-off sung by an amateur singer?? I’m not going to say she deserved the final The professional jury made a big mistake there rest and return in the near future with more energy but those 0 points from the jury had to be staged The voting makes almost impossible to not get a single point The song is a bit bland and her vocals were pretty bad I honearly think it is not her but the song but probably she is suffering from levina syndrome nobody hated the performance and nobody cared enough for the song to vote it happens even to much more experienced performers If it was tough to get zero points from the juries it was also great to get so many from the televote But she probably had received rude comments on her social networks and I believe taking a break from them and getting surrounded by her loved ones is indeed the best way to recharge her batteries Tip: The best way to find out why the jury feedback was so negative is to ask them As for what went down on social media… from what I saw there were some harsh critiques of the song and of the vocals on the night but there was also plenty of praise from those who liked the song as well It’s almost always about balance with an audience for music A reaction can be 50/50 between like/dislike but it doesn’t always happen.… Read more » Hopefully she’ll be able to learn from the experience and take the good from the bad The juries could have smelled a strong contestant and think they shouldn’t give her a chance at all I listened to the video and its moreso the fact that she received 0 points from the jury what upset her I mean I can kind of understand why she’d feel that way She went from being a top favourite to receiving NO POINTS from the jury They are just so inconsistent and ruin the “contest” element It was a shame because it was a good song but come on she butchered them high notes If it’s clear you can’t hit the notes either don’t try them or cover them up as best u can like Greece and Azerbaijan did in previous contests lol Silvan spoke 3/4 of the time and the 1/4 of the time he sang you could hear the recorded vocals more clearly than his own I like his song and the staging as well but his vocals are nothing to rave about tbh Destination Eurovision (most especially their juries) is starting to get a reputation where in they are robbing female artists with a good song and a good amount of vocals See Lucie’s “My World” from last year for example (zero in jury votes and televotes) Florina is somewhat lucky that some televoters appreciate her song and voice yet the juries on the other hand are bringing her down this year Who knows who they’ll victimize in the second semi final because it is gradually getting obvious due to a pattern they are making Taking a break from social media is always a good idea because sometimes there are very rude comments and you are shocked of the stupitidy Critic is very good if it is adressed in the *right language* – a problem you also see on YouTube and on some ESC fanpages I left a German one exactly because of that couldn’t read the rude language there anymore but if this is her reaction to a poor semifinal performance at Destination Eurovision I suspect girl never would have made it through the Eurovision gauntlet I highly doubt if this song went to ESC it would finish below the top 10 especially considering how unusually weak this year is starting off Not saying it will continue but by now we normally have a few good songs We litterally have 1 song and a few national finals and you say this is a bad year Negativity you bring ruins the whole spirit of Eurovision That’s an easy one: Terrible live vocals No one hates Florina and even though the entire thing was a bit embarrassing there’s always the chance to learn from one’s mistakes and improve the sound throughout all performances wasn’t good But she and Battista suffered the most… One of my favourites after Gabriella and Badi The key notes were off but last time I saw vocals were only 1 part of the performance alongside staging and the song lyrics In my opinion the juries from other countries have their own interest to make sure that their countries have less competition at ESC so I would not be surprise if they place some stronger songs on the lower end The international juries gave her about as much as she would’ve gotten at Eurovision Who gives Italy their 12 points at ESC2019 I just have eyes and ears that I occasionally use to make an educated prediction Just like I can already guess that English ain’t your strong suit So Florina might have been around 15th-19th with ”In The Shadows” And always remember: the professional jury is not really a group of professionals But her performance was absolutely catastrophic I can’t recall how many times I cringed What I don’t understand is how she did that well with the televoting I wasn’t surprised that she didn’t qualify and scored poorly because she kinda reminds me of June the Girl from last year — an early fan favourite who couldn’t translate live and flopped The only weird part is how she was a qualifier with the French jury but got 0 points from the international jury taste isn’t that drastically different depending on what country you’re from Perhaps the sound in the studio wasn’t that bad Because my ears were bleeding during that performance Call me old fashioned but I like singers to actually be in key If you can’t be understanding about this situation then don’t comment at all You don’t need to post unnecessary negative bs You’re probably one of those petty listeners who would instantly generalize a person’s entire ability to sing if they don’t get to reach a key in a particular part of a song alone And it’s not old-fashioned as you are being ridiculous about it Funnily enough Florina was more tolerable compared to Bilal’s tired vocals throughout her performance I must say she looked so broken after the results I hope she takes the time she needs because she truly didn’t deserve that result I Championship EU funding has enabled the upgrading of the water supply infrastructure serving 41 settlements in the communities of Meliti part of the West Macedonia region of northern Greece The upgrades are aimed at reducing the waste of drinking water ensuring adequate provision of water for local residents and protecting public health through quality control and disinfection of the water supplied via the network Achievements of the project include efficient operation of and real-time troubleshooting in water supply networks 24-hour monitoring of water quality and all critical parameters reduced operational cost of drilling and an increase in users of the network will be converted into local control stations and 5 155 new local metering and remote monitoring stations will be established A central control station will monitor the local control stations The project will supply the control station’s equipment software and information and communication technology the project entails the acquisition of portable leakage detection and programming equipment This comprises a programmable logic controller (an industrial digital computer adapted for the control of network processes) six programming and data-gathering units for the local metering and remote monitoring stations and a pipe inspection system for leak detection A 6-month test period will be used to confirm that the entire system functions smoothly and to train staff the operation of the water supply infrastructure will be automated and made more efficient 24-hour monitoring of all critical parameters related to water quality and the functioning of the network will support active leak detection and rapid troubleshooting This will reduce the incidence of problems thereby helping to cut the running costs of technical teams as well as costs related to maintenance of the system.Energy consumption and the environmental impact of water supply will be reduced partly due to the installation of solar panels to provide electricity for remote pumping stations Indirect benefits of the work come through more rational management of resources which will save water and address water shortages and ensure adequate supply and through improved inspection of leaks and a greater balance between flows of water into and out of the network The higher standard of service provision generated by the upgrades will benefit in excess of 10 000 inhabitants Total investment for the project “Upgrading of water infrastructure in the Municipal Units of Meliti Perasma and Kato Kleines of the Municipality of Florina” is EUR 2 023 050 with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 1 618 440 through the “Western Macedonia” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period The investment falls under the priority “Energy Union and Climate” Περιφέρεια Δυτικής Μακεδονίας / Ειδική Υπηρεσία Διαχείρισης Επ Προγράμματος "Δυτικής Μακεδονίας 2014-2020"
