Greek football imprint Athens Kallithea FC is among the most stylish in the game
with distinctive kits that riff on signature ’90s looks and deservedly stake their own claim in streetwear
Building on its ever-expanding lineup of navy-white jerseys
the label has just revealed its all-new 24/25 home shirt
which is slated to debut on the pitch later this month when the club returns to Greece’s top division for the first time in 18 years
Under the creative jurisdiction of brand president Ted Philipakos, the same brain behind Venezia FC
Athens Kallithea’s latest designs build on the club’s classic
adored codes but with a more refined finish
Athens Kallithea FCThe 2024/25 season is going to be a big one for Athens Kallithea FC
Returning to the top flight of Greek football for the first time in 18 years is a huge moment for the team and it needs an appropriately stylish kit to mark the occasion — which is where Ted Philipakos
President and Creative Director of the club
Some might feel pressure at having to deliver a football kit for such a momentous season
but not Philipakos: "Pressure kind of implies that
I would be thinking ahead to how it’s going to be received
I really don’t do that at all," the 42-year-old tells Highsnobiety
we’re just following our own tastes and instincts
Just some extra excitement to be graduating to a bigger stage
Athens Kallithea FCFormerly Chief Brand Officer at Venezia FC, where he turned the largely unknown Italian side into football’s most fashionable club
he joined Kallithea in 2021 after leading its acquisition
Athens Kallithea FC1 / 2“Last season’s home shirt is one of my favorites that we’ve worked on over the years
but we wanted to pivot to a less sporty and more elegant look this season,” says Philipakos
“I think the shirt is a testament to the power of restraint and subtlety when it’s well considered
and how it can allow distinctive color to be the protagonist.”
Designed in collaboration with Munich-based design powerhouse Bureau Borsche for the third consecutive year
the elegant shirt comes with a traditional collar
and debossed lines providing a light texture
Athens Kallithea FCTrue to Philipakos’ tastes, it’s a football shirt of the retro variety. And, true to Philipakos’ past endeavors
its retro looks have been expertly executed
Athens Kallithea FC"In the new season’s collection
especially in the home shirt just released and in the away shirt to be released soon
there was an approach towards restraint and subtlety
to produce a classic and understated result," says Philipakos
"The fact that the home shirt didn’t feel at all out of place in the short film we released
Not ones to reveal their new shirts through the typical studio photoshoot featuring awkwardly posed professional players
Athens Kallithea has produced a 1960s-inspired
with the ‘60s Greek film that inspired this year’s kit

Available exclusively from the Greek teams’ website, this is yet more proof of Athens Kallithea FC’s stylish sensibilities.

Athens Kallithea are reusing their 2024/25 kit collection next season as a way to prevent textile waste and overproduction
Despite kit manufacturers shifting to sustainable textiles
football’s carbon footprint is bigger than ever before
With the sport becoming fast fashion’s longest-lasting microtrend and clubs releasing four or more kits each season
the global production of kits and merchandise is having a negative impact on the environment
Athens Kallithea have solidified themselves as one of the leading clubs when it comes to football-fashion
releasing some of the most stylish kits the sport has seen in recent years
as one of the biggest influencers in the game
they are making an effort to change football’s footprint for good
Kallithea are restocking the previously sold-out 2024/25 collection
with all three kits available in both the short and long-sleeved versions
The jerseys will be rebranded as the 2024/26 collection to reflect the change
it’s rare for clubs to wear the same kits over multiple seasons in this day and age
Brentford has made waves for doing this as part of a greater push for sustainability at the club
but with the amount of product clubs churn out year after year
long-lasting kit collections could have a major impact globally
Here’s to more clubs making efforts to make football more sustainable in the future
The 2024/26 collection is available to purchase now on the Athens Kallithea website
The kits will be available at the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens starting in April

Olympique de Marseille have confirmed the departure of François Mughe (20) on loan to Athens Kallithea
The Greek side will have an option to make the deal permanent for an undisclosed fee
Mughe has had a difficult time at Marseille since arriving at the club in 2022 from EF Brasseries
an academy based in the winger’s home country of Cameroon
Last season promised to be a breakthrough campaign for Mughe under head coach Marcelino
when the Spaniard walked away early into the campaign following some exceptional circumstances
Mughe saw his pathway to the first team dry up
the winger was allowed to leave on loan for Ligue 2 side USL Dunkerque
The experience in the second tier was quite forgettable for the youngster as he suffered an injury which saw his game time limited to just five games in total
Mughe will hope that fresh scenery in the Greek Super Leauge will help him refind his footing

The Piraeus giants have sealed their berth into the Greek Cup’s quarter-finals in spite of a tremendous fight from Kallithea, while PAOK made light work of Egaleo to secure a huge tie against rivals AEK in the next round.
Olympiacos drew 1-1 with Kallithea at “Georgos Karaiskakis” ground on Thursday morning to advance 2-1 on aggregate, booking their ticket to the next stage of the tournament.
The visitors gave the “red-whites” a huge early scare as they took the lead in the second minute of the contest through defender Giorgos Manthatis, making it level on aggregate in the process.
Olympiacos managed to cancel it out in the 24th minute, thanks to a goal from winger Kristoffer Velde (who also scored the winner in the previous leg), with the Norwegian’s strike proving enough for them to progress.
The Piraeus outfit now awaits the outcome of the Panathinaikos-Atromitos tie, with them set to play the winner of that tie.
Currently, it seems they will face their eternal enemy after the Greens downed the Peristeriotes 1-2 away in the first leg.
Atromitos took an early lead after a tap-in goal by striker Tom Van Weert, though the “Trifylli” was able to overcome the deficit following goals by midfielder Adam Cerin (45+2′) and Azzedine Ounahi (54′).
While Panathinaikos vs Olympiacos is yet to be confirmed, we are guaranteed at least one derby in the quarter-finals after PAOK made light work of Egaleo to book a meeting with AEK (who had progressed past Aris 2-1 on aggregate after their 1-1 draw on Wednesday).
The Thessaloniki giants smashed their opponents 7-1 at “Toumba” ground with goals coming from Shola Shoretire (6′), Tarik Tissoudali (12′, 47′, 51′), Andrija Zivkovic (36′), Taison (79′) and Brandon Thomas (81′).
The second division side earned one consolation through Ierotheos Dritsas (23′), though it did little to stop PAOK’s domination as they finished with a 10-1 victory on aggregate.
OFI managed to advance past Volos despite losing 0-1 away, with the Cretans’ 3-1 win in the previous leg providing enough distance as they earned a 3-2 triumph on aggregate.
OFI will now face second division side Panachaiki in the next round.
The other quarter-final tie will be decided after the second legs between Panserraikos-Panionios and Asteras Tripolis-Zakynthos on Friday morning, with the likelihood being that the two first division clubs will advance and face one another.
In terms of the Greek Super League, the country’s top clubs will be eyeing maximum points this weekend as they prepare for the 14th round of the competition.
Olympiacos will open the round with a home clash against Volos on Sunday morning, which will be followed by Aris hosting Atromitos.
The following day will see all three of PAOK, AEK and Panathinaikos going away in search of three points against Panserraikos, OFI and Asteras Tripolis respectively.
Lamia hosts Panetolikos in the other Monday game as they strive for their first win in the league since the very first matchday.
Kallithea plays Levadiakos in the round’s final match on Tuesday morning, with the clubs each battling for a crucial win against a fellow relegation rival.

If you haven’t heard of Athens Kallithea FC by now
The kits, in deep navy and crisp white, harken back to classic nineties looks: wide through the chest, big sweat-wicking collars, and elbow-length sleeves. The accompanying editorials are Greek summer meets luxury athleisure shot street-photography style; the film grain is evident
A nod of approval the likes of which have never been seen before in football too
as each kit features the ΕΜΣΤ wordmark of the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens on its chest
a first-of-its-kind partnership between a professional club and an arts and culture institution
It all started with the arrival of Ted Philipakos who led the acquisition of Kallithea (Kali-thay-ah)
both as an aesthetic touchstone and a cultural one
Two years later the second division Greek team is fast-becoming known as one of football’s most stylish clubs
“It’s the art direction, mainly. But that doesn't tell the whole story,” says Dan Sandison, Head of Brand of MUNDIAL Magazine
I think when you hear Athens as the first word of a football club's name
Especially if you haven't heard of them before
then you look at the imagery and it all starts to make sense.”
Philipakos was one of the brains behind Venezia FC
the now-famous club based out of Venice that became known for its stylish kits and aesthetically pleasing editorials
Following his departure from the Italian side earlier this year to take up a full-time position in Athens
the 42-year-old is ready to go one step further with Kallithea
“Everything I’m doing can be traced back to my childhood relationship to football,” says Philipakos
a golden age of football in many respects — the dawn of the Premier League
That era is foundational in my view of the game; the way it should feel
And while aesthetics are gravely important to Philipakos and his long-term goals
he’s aware that on the pitch there have to be improvements too
Since leading a group acquisition of the Athens-based club in August 2021
the team has gone from mid-table obscurity to finishing second in the league — their highest since they were a top-flight team seventeen years ago
Philipakos is strategic in his ambitions for the team
Rather than promotion to the Super League Greece
he’s aiming for UEFA Competitions within the next five years
Your Highsnobiety privacy settings have blocked this Instagram post.Enable All MediaManage consentPrivacy policyWhy Athens Kallithea FC
The club has a small but distinctive stadium right in the heart of Athens
in the shadow of the Acropolis and just off Syngrou Avenue
the main road that connects the city center to the Athens Riviera
and Kallithea is a traditional Athenian neighborhood with the right kind of social values
which you can start to understand from the anti-fascist
it had a modest but respectable history for us to build upon
and I was attracted to the club’s blue and white being the national colors
because there's a symbolism for what we want to do here
What are your goals with the club on the pitch
but we want to reach the top five in the first division and qualify for UEFA competitions within five years
It's not realistic or our intention to challenge the traditional top four clubs [Olympiacos
we’re just not going to have the same resources
but we want to find creative ways to compete and establish ourselves as a respected team at the higher end of the league that could emerge in Europe
Your Highsnobiety privacy settings have blocked this Instagram post.Enable All MediaManage consentPrivacy policyAnd off it
our highest goal is to contribute to a repositioning of football in Greece
It’s a country that has won a European championship
with several historic clubs who have been competitive in Europe
and some of the most passionate supporters in the world
It just needs a fresh perspective and a few adjustments to get back to its best and beyond
Greece is one of the most visited countries in the world
so there is a global relevance if football is going well here
I just felt like Athens was too absent in the landscape of football culture and media
and this project was partly motivated to push for representation
This is something that started at Venezia FC
the club was coming out of bankruptcy and the fourth division
hardly anyone in Venice cared about the team
and hardly anyone outside of Venice knew it existed
But I thought it was really cool and beautiful
there was a sort of defiance to the approach
because the way modern football has been organized
and the way modern media relates to the game
basically you’re Man City and the like or you’re worthless
I wanted to help a small club make a statement
to have its pride and punch above its weight
I’ve been leading this project with my brother Peter
Your Highsnobiety privacy settings have blocked this Instagram post.Enable All MediaManage consentPrivacy policyWhat was your relationship to football growing up? Where does the drive to take on a project like this come from?
I grew up in New York but in a Greek household, and I discovered European football at large on family trips to Greece, which opened a whole new world for me. I would rush to the newsstands in Athens that were importing When Saturday Comes, FourFourTwo, and other magazines from England and just devour them. I couldn’t find those in New York, and obviously this was pre-internet.
From an outsider’s perspective, the beauty of a club like Athens Kallithea FC will be in the kits, the well-shot IG reels, and the campaigns around it. But when you dive a little deeper, the ambition, love, and desire to succeed is just as astounding. The story of Athens Kallithea FC may only just be beginning, but believe me when I say it’s going to be a good one.

Chris Kontos / @kennedymagazineVenezia FC’s reign as football’s most fashionable club is officially over
The Athens-based outfit — which last year garnered itself a myriad of overseas fans when it dropped its 2022/23 home and away jerseys — has revealed its kits for the 2023/24 campaign
It reminds me of something from the nineties
Perhaps it's the elbow-length sleeves or the little button-up collar
Or the fact I can literally envisage an ageing Stuart Pearce drying the ball with the midriff of one of these during his Nottingham Forest days
When it comes to the Athens Kallithea FC away kit
It's something very much more of the now
with its gold and white detailing and a pleasing crew neck collar

I'd expect a similar instantaneous sell-out to what we saw last season
In fact, such is football’s recent willingness to embrace the world of fashion — and the fact that these new kits are even nicer than last year’s — they’ll fly off the e-shelves even faster this time around

Premia Properties’ deal to buy two hotels in Kallithea
The hotels are the 534-room Sunwing Kallithea Beach and the 262-room Sunwing Makrigialos & Ocean Beach Club
Swedish company Nordic Leisure Travel Group
will continue to operate the hotels but will lease the properties from Premia
for an initial period of 15 years with an option for a further 10
Premia will finance the €112.5 million deal with its own funds plus a corporate bond to be underwritten by National Bank of Greece
which will be finalized by the end of the year
will raise the value of Premia Properties’ portfolio above €500 million
while rent income will increase by about €8.5 million
“We were interested in entering the hospitality market through the acquisition of hotels,” Premia CEO Kostas Markazos told Kathimerini
“These units serve our strategy and are in the category
because they because we consider them very volatile,” he added
Markazos further noted that the two hotels are right on the beach
something that new construction cannot offer due to building code restrictions
Running in Kallithea
Kallithea
has established itself as a key destination for running enthusiasts
the area attracts both local athletes and international visitors who share a passion for running
The Kallithea Run – April 6
One of the most anticipated events on the running calendar is the “Kallithea Run”
The starting and finishing point is at Davaki Square in Kallithea
The 10 km route takes runners along El Venizelos Avenue (Thiseos)
Runners then continue to Isminis Street before returning to Davaki Square
the 2.5 km route offers a compact experience along a similar path
Looking Back: The Kallithea Half Marathon 2024
Another highlight in Kallithea’s running scene was the “Kallithea Half Marathon”
The event featured race distances of 21.1 km
starting from the iconic Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC)
This renowned cultural venue not only provided a picturesque backdrop but also enhanced the event’s vibrant atmosphere
Kallithea’s dedication to promoting running as a healthy and accessible sport is evident through its diverse events and well-maintained facilities
Both locals and visitors benefit from numerous opportunities to stay active and enjoy the city’s welcoming environment

Kathimerini journeys to the central market of Kallithea
are as vivid as the smells and flavors of the food
my grandfather would come home with a cart full of colorful
semi-transparent plastic bags full of fruits and vegetables
It was one of those old metal carts that allowed you to see everything squeezed in or tied to the sides: fruits
bunches of parsley and scallions that were easier to see because they protruded from paper bags
White and gray wrapping paper with folkloric illustrations meanwhile wrapped meat and fish
He would fill his shopping cart at the covered market in Kallithea
a ritual he followed consistently every week
and then distribute the fresh “spoils” to the whole family
I used to call it a “farmers’ market” because that’s what it looked like to me
except it was open every day and it was indoors
I realized along the way that it was more than just a place where my grandfather bought fruit and vegetables; it was an important part of the history of Kallithea
but the market of Kallithea remains almost the same and unchanged
On the counters of its stalls and stores is almost its entire 70-year history: from the first Pontian merchants who built it
who had arrived following the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1922
to their children and grandchildren who keep the businesses going today
to the younger ones who have chosen it and keep the so-called “little Varvakeio” of Kallithea alive – in reference to the big covered market in downtown Athens
Haralampos Polatidis will not give up the market for anything
Entering from the Gryparis Street entrance
in the first small but colorful store you encounter
you’ll find the whole history of the market
you will see Haralampos Polatidis sitting in the back
and his daughter Ioanna has been running the store for years – many of the market’s stalls and stores have seen the second or even third generation take over the family business
Haralampos is also descendant from the Pontus refugees who settled in Kallithea after the Asia Minor Catastrophe
and long before the market took the form we know today they set up their stalls with their wares in the surrounding streets
He remembers the times when they would move from Filaretou Street to Platonos Street with their goods
Many of the market’s stalls and stores have seen the second or even third generation take over the family business
in 1956 the open-air merchants managed to buy the two plots of land where the market is now located (flanked by Gryparis
Platonos and Davaki) and by the following year the market
you can’t help but admit that something is going on with the number 56 in this case
which in turn were distributed using a lottery system
and Haralampos was allotted store number 56
the market’s oldest merchant recounts the story of the landmark
He remembers that when the market opened there was a big frenzy
as there weren’t supermarkets on every corner back then
is also the busiest part of the market – it’s the stretch that starts from Platonos and ends at Gryparis
I ask if he ever thought about leaving the market to do something else
disagrees: “I’m among those who want to leave,” she says
but officially at the helm of the family grocery store since 1995
Ioanna Polatidi points out that it’s a very tiring job
requiring you to be there around 15 hours a day
She makes no secret of the fact that foot traffic in the market is now down and they often make enough just to cover expenses
“But I’m grateful to all those who come,” she says
because “our market is a jewel.” Even if not everyone knows it
“Me and Haralampos have been here the longest,” says Stavros Antonopoulos as he sips his coffee
“The others are gone.” He looks elegant in his flat cap and long coat
Although he claims to be there the second longest
it has been years since he stopped working at the market
the first eight years at one store and the next 25 in another – both of which he rented
so the stores have changed hands since then
He had moved to Kallithea a year earlier and taken a job at the cheese counter in the Gavalakis brothers’ supermarket
right next to the market on Platonos Street (to locals
where the Hytiroglou homeware store is today)
Stavros says it was the only supermarket in Kallithea at the time
the heart of the district’s shopping center attracted people from the surrounding areas
the market was so busy that the limit on how far each store could expand was very specific: “We couldn’t even put a crate beyond the line,” he recalls
there are no such restrictions; it’s generally not as busy but traditionally more people visit the market on Saturdays
The seasoned veteran of the market has quietly come to embrace the job that had been essentially his entire life and
Something still binds him to this corner of his neighborhood so strongly that he chooses to come here every morning to drink his coffee
to chat with friends and acquaintances and to watch people go by
we will continue coming here,” he says with disarming determination
The whole market has had coffee from the hands of Lefteris
The market used to have a coffee shop upstairs (this upper floor is now used for storage)
and the employees would lower a tray of hot coffee to the shopkeepers with a rope
There were other interesting inventions at the market: If you see some old loudspeakers somewhere in the center
but to make announcements for small children who had lost their parents in the hustle and bustle
As one of the newest additions to the market
Lefteris Zontiros has also heard these stories
He is from Piraeus and four years ago was wandering around the area looking for a store to rent
but he happened to see one of its corner stores on Platonos Street for rent
brewing coffee – even on sand for the more discerning clients
He keeps his small coffee pots and coffee machines ready from the moment the first catches hit the fishmongers’ shelves until noon
so almost every merchant has visited Lefteris’ coffee shop
He also has his standard customers whose orders he’s memorized – he knows who wants what coffee at eight
his employee both helps make the coffees and then deliver them on foot
The most gourmet flavors of the market can be found in Kaspar’s store
Kaspar Batanian’s story begins more than a century ago in the depths of Asia Minor
That is where his grandfather – who had the same name as his grandson – lived
in the claimed homeland of pastourma – well-seasoned
Grandfather Batanian knew all the secrets of the most famous Eastern mezes
as well as other specialties such as crab meat and the pig head jelly known as “pichti.” Also having fled during the Asia Minor catastrophe in 1922
The Greek port was probably introduced to pastourma by someone just like him
Kaspar (the grandfather) opened a small workshop where he prepared his fine delicacies
his son took over another small store and began selling the family’s products in the Piraeus market
the Batanian family have become masters of pastourma and sausages
Kaspar (the grandson) and his brother Aram have several stores in Attica
have taken over the family factory in Koropi
Kaspar makes his way to his store at the heart of the Kallithea market
They’ve moved around the market several times over the years
and today their deli houses some of the market’s most distinctive tastes and smells
but there are also other delicacies like the spreads
The owner won’t let you leave until you’ve tried at least some of these delicacies
At a time when some of the market’s stores in Kallithea have closed and most of the merchants admit that business is down “because young people don’t have time and prefer to get everything ready at the supermarket,” one wonders how a store like Ar.Kas (that’s how the two brothers named it
after the initials of their first names) with more specialized products can survive
And yet it survives precisely because of this
while most others go first to do their basic shopping and then stop by the store to pick up special treats
especially if they are having a dinner party
chopping and washing fruits and vegetables
there’s a grocery store with its fruits and vegetables so impeccably arranged that the crates almost look like they’ve been pulled out of a cartoon
Irini Maroulidou sits on a stool among the fresh produce
peeling a pomegranate and placing the seeds in a transparent container
she had also chopped and washed some greens that a regular customer and friend of her daughter had come to buy “ready to cook,” so that she could prepare them before she goes to the office
while her daughter Julia sells their produce
“We don’t let our mom handle any technology
she’s done something crazy,” her daughter says with a laugh
Irini accidentally entered 400,000 euros into the cash register instead of 40 euros
Irini has been at the Kallithea market since 1966
she came to Athens from Messinia in the Peloponnese to get married
“She is known as the market bride,” says her daughter Julia
who was the second generation to take over the grocery store – his parents were among the first Pontians to establish the market
and with the third generation now in charge
Irini continues to come every day to make sure the produce is properly arranged
“Sunday is the only day I don’t come,” she says
we just have lots of cooking to do to feed the children
confirming that it’s as if the older generation of Greek women can never really sit down
and the regulars are now like friends of the store owners – they come
maybe even sit down for a coffee – Julia admits that “the world of the market has changed a lot
Something has to be done to revive the market
It has remained as it was built.” Nonetheless
she has found a way to attract younger customers who may not know exactly where her store is located: She has put it on the delivery service apps
she’s sneaking a peek at her tablet to see if a new order has arrived
On the way to the second entrance of the market on Platonos Street
the song “Prayer” by Spyros Zagoraios can be heard in the background
A few more steps and you realize that it is coming from the loudspeakers of the Acropolis grocery store
the youngest man in the store is cutting and weighing cheese at the counter
while the other two are making small talk over coffee and a cigarette
One of the two market veterans is Pericles Antonopoulos (no relation to the aforementioned Stavros Antonopoulos)
who has been behind the counter for 52 years – now more relaxed since his son
everything is reminiscent of ancient Greece
Pericles has been working in grocery stores since he was 10 years old
he was already tired of the idea and said to himself
“I’ll be anything in life except a grocer.” But things have a funny way of working out
Pericles found himself for the first time as an employee of the Acropolis store – the date is permanently etched in his memory
which then operated as an outlet for the factory of the same name producing sausages
“I came for a while and ended up staying for 50 years,” he says
the original owner of Acropolis sold him the business to do something else
The Acropolis sausage factory was located in Tzitzifies
next to the grocery store where Pericles worked at the time
which was among the nightclubs of Tzitzifies that were then in their heyday: “To become a singer
you had to pass through the Faliriko nightclub,” Pericles recalls
referring to one of the most legendary nightclubs in the area
on the marquee of which were written the names of greats like Vassilis Tsitsanis
The young Pericles was suddenly caught between two worlds: the morning world of the grocery store and the evening world of the nightclub
which was waiting for him a few doors away
He carried supplies from the grocery store to the nightclubs – fruit on platters for the customers and ingredients for the workers to cook and eat
and he found himself doing some night work
“I would use the three-wheeler to take food back and forth all night from the warehouses to the nightclubs,” Pericles recalls
and when it was dawn and the party was over
we collected the broken dishes in barrels with shovels,” he recalls
Supplying food to a nightclub seems more tiring than managing a grocery store in a marketplace
But Pericles notes that although it was hard work at the nightclubs
Pericles would carry heavy loads from the warehouse to the store by hand
At least now his son Aristomenis has taken over and Pericles can enjoy his favorite songs coming from the loudspeakers
you will eventually see Chrysoula Kapiri walking by
It is no surprise that she is the market’s president; she is straightforward
she is behind the counter of the market bakery
This is where she found herself 30 years ago when her children were 5 and 12
“It was the market that helped me raise my children,” she says
She often speaks of her children with pride
One of her sons is a photographer in Finland
Many members of her family have similar interests
as Chrysoula gained an interest in baking from her cousins
noting that there have been many changes in recent years
And there is no shortage of difficulties: the market is privately owned
so it doesn’t get any government or city funding
and it’s hard for the owners to renovate the building (which has remained virtually unchanged) without some help
she’s not losing hope: “I think the market will hold up and we’ll continue here,” she says
she doesn’t mind because she’s in a place she loves: “We older people have learned to work a lot
The market does not exist without its peripheral stores
the tastes and smells continue to come from small carefully set-up stores
Opposite the entrance to the market on Platonos Street
a small “jungle” will catch the eye of even the most distracted passer-by
which also extends to the back of the almost deserted Platon shopping center
while many of the colorful flowerpots are displayed in two vans out front
They come to the store every day from 7 a.m
which they put on display and then gather up each day
She’s been working at the florist’s for 16 years and takes it upon herself to tell us the history of the store
as Maria is a bit shy – she just fills in some of the blanks
Back when there were still stalls in the streets and before the market took the form we know today
Maria’s mother ran a store a few meters away from the current flower shop
Her grandparents were also refugees from Pontus
they were given some land and that’s how they ended up with the store
Long before concept stores combined the most unlikely goods under one roof as a clear sign of the gentrification of a city
the family’s store consisted of flowers for sale on one side and an art gallery on the other
he suddenly fell ill and died when Maria was only 6 years old
and since then her mother has kept only the flower shop
which her daughter continues to lovingly run to this day
before the market was built and long before florists became the kind of stores you find in every neighborhood
“I’ve been here since I was born,” says Maria
Although the two workers are busy helping customers while we’re there
Spyridoula tells us that business is down by their standards
“It depends on the season,” the employee tells me
anemones and freesias are the most popular.”
and it’s “nice and fragrant,” Spyridoula tells us as she wraps up two cyclamen plants for us to take home as living souvenirs
an excited customer had left with a bright red carnation in his hand
we took a quick look at the back courtyard of the flower shop
an open-air nursery where the open spaces of the old apartment buildings and the two-story building of the flower shop meet

Venezia FC's Greek “cousin” has launched two of this season’s best kits
The team behind Venezia’s rebrand – which helped it become the “coolest club in the world” – have unveiled the club’s “cousin.” Greek team Athens Kallithea FC currently play in the Super League 2
and has worked with Venezia creative director Ted Philipakos and collaborators Bureau Borsche and Kappa to unveil their new 2022-23 home and away shirts alongside a complete rebrand
The designs proudly sport the influence of the Venezia model
with a focus on fashion-forward kits and editorials to launch them
Bureau Borsche have added a white collar and gold detailing that includes a trim around the sleeves and collar
The away shirt uses the same colour palette
single blue stripe and more gold detailing
Both minimal designs are inspired by classic Greek aesthetics
and were shot by Athenian photographer Chris Kontos in the city
This new era for the club goes further than just new kits
The team has been renamed – Athens Kallithea FC replacing just Kallithea FC – while Bureau Borsche also designed a new crest
The new version is a stylized “AK” logo which appears in gold on both shirts
logo and name represent a new identity for Athens Kallithea FC
its new leadership – Philipakos and his brother Peter
are directors – aim to build on the club’s existing reputation
It takes its name from its base in the district of Kallithea (Greek for “beautiful view”)
and the team play at a stadium nicknamed “El Paso.”
The ground’s moniker references the Clint Eastwood film For a Few Dollars More
nodding to the stadium’s rock-surrounded setting in an old quarry
Kallithea FC last played in the Greek top flight 16 years ago
but last season were runners-up in the second tier
“The game has a beautiful heritage in Greece
but that’s been tortured over the last 15 years
which was set in motion by UEFA systematically marginalizing football outside of the top five leagues
and made worse by the country’s most important stakeholders not working together and generally falling out of touch,” Philipakos explained
“At the core of the mission of Athens Kallithea FC is to contribute in our own small way to a repositioning of football in Greece.”

During his time at Pittodrie, McGarry appeared 26 times and scored once. Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin said they will monitor the left-sided defender’s progress closely.
He said: “With Jack returning from injury and Alexander joining us, opportunities for James will be limited and he is at an important stage of his career where he needs regular minutes on the pitch.
“He’s going to a competitive league where there is a lot to play for so we’ll monitor his progress and believe this will be a really valuable loan for the player.”

Consultation on the new zoning plan for tourism is expected to begin soon and to serve as the main instrument for imposing restrictions on the number of short-term rental assets
the exact content of restrictions is unclear
but the inclusion of a number of areas of Attica in the relevant provisions seems to be a harbinger of future developments
one of the main elements of the new zoning plan provides for restrictions on the number of accommodations
it will be foreseen to set “limitations on the number of sharing tourism spaces and simple rented rooms
as a percentage of the beds of the main tourist accommodation” in the “control areas” and in the “developed areas.” The latter concern Attica and Thessaloniki
given the shortage of houses to buy or rent and the housing crisis this has created
Standing out in Attica among the “developed areas” are downtown Athens
However the bulk belongs to the center of Athens with 16,900 accommodations
while the other 4,882 assets are located in all other regions
in some of them it is not clear where the interventions will be focused
How the selection has been made has raised questions
both due to the low penetration of short-term rentals and the fact they are not areas with a deficit housing and high demand from long-term tenants
the “control areas” include districts that are in very strong demand
the phenomenon of shortage in housing for students or public officials is observed every year
so the search for solutions is now imperative
These are the municipal units Paralia in Pieria
2023Venezia FC held the crown for football’s most fashionable kit for long enough
The Athens-based outfit had a similarly impressive kit last season but have now revealed their uniforms for the 2023/24 campaign
and they’ve taken things to the next level once more
The navy kit has an air of classic elegance about it
reminding us of something from the nineties
With its elbow-length sleeve and button-up collar
it’s hard not to imagine stars from football’s golden era donning the kit
We’d certainly pay good money to go back in time and see Eric Cantona slap one into the top corner in a kit as stunning as this
It’s something very much more of the now
So impressive are the uniforms it won’t be a surprise to see them have an instantaneous sell-out similar to what we saw last season
such is football’s recent willingness to embrace the world of fashion — and the fact that these new kits are even nicer than last year’s — they’ll fly off the e-shelves even faster this time around

The neighborhood of Kallithea in southern Athens may be quiet
but this densely populated area has seen its share of activity over the years
beginning in the early 20th century when it was largely built up by refugees from Asia Minor (modern day Turkey) and the Pontus (the coastal regions of the Black Sea)
The first waves arrived after the Greco-Turkish war (1919-1922) and later the Lausanne Treaty (1923)
which called for a population exchange between Greece and Turkey
More refugees from the Soviet Union appeared in the 1930s and then a third wave came much later
Given this history
the grandchild of Pontic Greeks expelled by Stalin to Kazakhstan in 1942
opened a restaurant celebrating Soviet cuisine in Kallithea – not only is there a built-in customer base but it’s also where she lives with her husband and two children
(Stalin oversaw the deportation of Pontic Greeks and other minorities from the northern Caucasus and the Crimea to various regions within the Soviet Union
mainly modern-day Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan
Despoina was raised in the city of Osakorovka in Kazakhstan
When she came to Greece with her parents in 1991
Despoina didn’t have any plans to cook professionally
For me cooking is a way to relax and express myself,” she tells us
Although she had studied piano and opera singing
Despoina had to focus on making ends meet after she moved to Athens
but in Greece we were seen as Russian,” she says
“We felt like second-class citizens for a long time.”
she decided to go into the restaurant business as a way to showcase the complexities of Soviet cooking
“People didn’t know anything about Russian cuisine and I really wanted to show them the best of the world that I grew up in,” she says
Premiera – “It was my premiere as a cook
hence the name,” she explains with a smile on her face – opened its doors in 2010
right at the start of the Greek financial crisis
she kept prices low and her parents helped out quite a bit in the beginning
also took on as many responsibilities as she could manage to keep hired help to a minimum
and she’s careful not to impose her own dreams onto them
Set in a beautiful old house squeezed between large
Premiera feels appealingly aristocratic without being fancy
The cozy dining room is reminiscent of older times
tables are set in the lush garden at the back
“I want my customers to relax and feel taken care of here,” says Despoina
The extensive menu features an eclectic mix of Pontic Greek and Caucasian dishes
as well as traditional Russian and Soviet dishes
the former characterized by lots of river fish
while the later incorporates a broader range of ingredients and culinary traditions
the famous soup popular in Russia and most of Eastern Europe
Despoina’s version surprisingly contains no beetroots
It comes topped with a dollop of lard and smetana
and served with a slice of very dark Russian bread
“People come from all over Athens to try my borscht,” she says proudly
and we can see why: despite the heartiness of the dish
We also loved the salads: a spicy shredded carrot and onion salad
a Russian salad (a different interpretation than most Russian salads in Athens
with chopped egg and smoked bacon added to the vegetables) and one called “herring under fur coat,” a quintessential Caucasian New Year’s dish
It is a layered salad where marinated herring is covered with chopped vegetables and then finished with a thick cover of mayonnaise and grated egg
The stuffed eggplants with a spicy walnut and garlic spread called adjika (different from the fiery red pepper spread of the same name that is common in the Caucasus)
which belongs to the Greek cuisine from Pontos
which look like tortellini and are filled with meat; vareniki
which are half-moon shaped and have different fillings such as meat or cheese; and manti
which look like pouches and are also filled with meat
All three are steamed (as opposed to boiled) and served with a spicy tomato sauce
There are also a variety of meat dishes in the menu
but with such huge portions it was impossible to try them all
But we have a feeling we’ll be back to this relaxing Greco-Russian outpost

While disruptions to major tournaments have meant that games have been played back-to-back throughout the season so far
that does mean that fans have always got a game on the go – what more could they want
kits this year have been firing on all cylinders across all tournaments
Outside of that and Nike's own World Cup line-up, Kappa has made some serious noise across Europe
with plenty of bangers within its vintage archive
but its efforts in 2022 are nothing short of incredible
First, it delivered three back-to-back bangers on behalf of Venezia FC. Although the competition this year is immense, it's hard not to call the away kit the best football kit of the year
as the Greek club has also enlisted the help of Kappa
German design studio Bureau Borsche and Venezia FC’s Chief Brand Officer Ted Philipakos
Your Highsnobiety privacy settings have blocked this Instagram post.Enable All MediaManage consentPrivacy policySimilar to Venezia's statement offerings, gold accents adorn both the home and away kits, both of which are a marriage of navy and white.
If Kappa keeps it up, we're going to have a serious contender on our hands for the best kits of the 2023/24 season. Watch out, adidas.
