the original has been in business since 2008 and has carved out a niche for itself by serving Mediterranean-inspired dishes with strictly organic and locally sourced products
It’s been so successful that additional locations have opened in Mykonos and Kifisia
The Kifisia outpost sits opposite the local favorite open-air cinema
a landmark that has raised generations of children
old Hollywood movie star pictures on the walls
and dishes with names like “Sophia Loren” and “Pamela Anderson,” Nice ‘n’ Easy could be easily mistaken for a yuppified American-inspired diner
And the chitchat is definitely what one would expect from an upmarket Kifisia restaurant: Boat insurance was a hotly debated topic amongst diners the last time we visited
Nice ‘n’ Easy’s appeal isn’t only skin-deep
It is first and foremost a place with enormous dedication to organic
The menu has a whole page describing the provenance of every single ingredient
chicken and eggs come from the Kerkini organic farm near Serres in northern Greece
while the beef is from an organic farm in the Peloponnese
Nice ‘n’ Easy does a lot of different things very well
including a breakfast and snack menu serving everything from organic muesli with goji berries to eggs Benedict
more than 10 different salads and some very creative starters and main courses
We really liked the “Jim Morrison” – caramelized formaela cheese with citrus paste and an aromatic herb salad
which has been recognized with a Protected Designation of Origin
At Nice ‘n’ Easy it’s lightly fried – the correct treatment – which makes for a pleasingly chewy contrast to the citrus paste
as noted by the restaurant’s nutritional index
12 grams of carbs and 15 milligrams of cholesterol
Nice ‘n’ Easy is a pioneer in another sense
It’s one of the first restaurants in Athens to serve water buffalo
Greek water buffalo were being raised near Lake Kerkini near Serres before the 1950s
but the population had dwindled precipitously by the 1990s
It took a lot of effort and two dedicated farms to not only bring the buffalo population back but also to start farming and selling their meat
Nice ‘n’ Easy serves a buffalo burger in Kolonaki
there’s the lovely but bizarrely named “Marvin Gaye” dish: water buffalo meatballs with graviera cheese from Naxos and a smoked tomato sauce
a surprisingly light spin on the heavier beef meatballs served in most restaurants
We also love the sioufihta pasta with wild mushrooms
a traditional fresh pasta originating from Crete
is made with a combination of wheat and white flours
olive oil and water and shaped into twists
Expect to pay around €25 to €30 per person without wine and more if you want a special like the buffalo fillet dish
What you get for your money are ingredients of exceptional quality skillfully transformed into wonderfully satisfying dishes
Whether you were born and raised in Kifisia or are a recent transplant

with this project, kordas architects seeks to find balance between strict minimalism and homeliness
the design approaches the interior as a sculptural entity
with curved geometries defining the forms and functions of the house
evenly textured finishes applied on the walls
create an optical illusion where surfaces seamlessly fade in each other
the lack of decorative elements promotes simplicity
the same concept runs throughout the entirety of the house
thus creating a unified experience of fluid surfaces
and dining room develop in an open plan spatial unit
whereas the private spaces are separately situated in a distinct section of the residence
the outdoor living spaces reflect the same conceptual guidelines and thanks to the large openings and the balcony
residents can enjoy generous views of the surroundings

The “Trifylli” came out on top in a narrow game against Kifisia to go into the international break with a four-point lead in first
with Greece’s other top sides also earning important wins
Panathinaikos beat Kifisia 0-1 away on Monday morning in the Greek Super League’s 11th round
continuing their strong form in the league following their disappointing European fixture midweek
The Greens found the match’s lone goal in the 58th minute after a failed clearance afforded Daniel Mancini a chance to shoot with his left
the winger’s strike being parried by goalkeeper Alexandros Anagnostopoulos onto the left post before it went into the net
The victory marks the league leaders’ fifth straight success (including the derby with Olympiacos that they have now officially been awarded as a 0-3 win for them)
sending them into the upcoming break in good spirits
A brace from captain Kostas Fortounis led Olympiacos to a 0-2 away triumph over Asteras Tripolis
lifting their morale following disappointment in Europe and the sanctions suffered from the Panathinaikos derby being upheld
The Piraeus giants took the lead in the 69th minute
who scored from long range just five minutes after coming off the bench
Fortounis wrapped up the contest with a second goal late into the piece (90+6’)
AEK bagged a 3-0 victory against Lamia at “Agia Sophia” Stadium to remain level on points with Olympiacos
Enosi gained the advantage in the 10th minute of the clash through striker Levi Garcia
with captain Sergio Araujo making it two (36’) before the end of the first half
Playmaker Petros Mantalos put the game to bed with a final goal in the deep into injury time
converting his penalty to polish off a great outing for the hosts
PAOK came from behind to earn a 2-1 win over Panetolikos at “Toumba” Stadium
maintaining their position among the other sides at the top of the ladder
The Agrinio side managed to sneak ahead in the 20th minute after a cross from the right was volleyed in by defender Pedro Silva
his strike deflecting off a defender on its way into the net
The Thessaloniki side drew level just six minutes later as striker Mbawana Samatta flicked the ball in behind himself from close range
and they soon went in front themselves when winger Andrija Zivkovic’s cross from the right side went over the keeper and into the goal (36’)
This proved to be the final decisive moment of the match
with PAOK successfully building on last week’s impressive victory against Olympiacos
Aris sealed a 0-2 away triumph over Volos on Sunday morning to record their third win from their last four outings
The “yellow-blacks” took the lead on the hour mark after striker Loren Moron calmly struck his penalty kick into the bottom left
with midfielder Vladimir Darida securing the points soon after with an effort from inside the box (75’)
Atromitos rescued a point at the death in their 1-1 home draw to Panserraikos
continuing their recent upturn in form that has seen them escape from the relegation zone
The Serres club found the back of the net first
thanks to a goal from winger Zisis Chatzistravos into the bottom right (40’)
though the Peristeriotes would cancel it out in the contest’s dying minutes via a header from substitute Karol Angielski (90+4’)
OFI was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Giannina
extending their winless run to four matches
The Cretans went ahead just 35 seconds into the game through a strong shot from right back Nikolaos Marinakis into the bottom left
OFI held onto the lead for over 80 minutes when centre half Rodrigo Erramuspe equalised for the Epirutans
heading the ball from a cross into the right side of the net (86’)
While Giannina will be pleased at getting a point
they will be disappointed at failing to snap their winless streak which is now at 11 matches in all competitions
I’m sitting in the shade of a gardener’s shack with a mad man
smiling face and cordial manner are reassuringly benign
The garden itself is an ebullience of tomatoes
cukes and eggplant and is especially unusual in Kifisia
“You’d have to be mad to do what I did here in Kifisia,” says Petros with a huge grin
his passion for growing vegetables keeps growing
He just started another garden on the slopes of Pendeli
but it was his original vegetable patch in Halandri
Petros loves giving his crops away as much as he loves tending them
And because his garden in Halandri always produces more than his family can use
he used to distribute its bounty to friends and establishments in his neighborhood
I’d take vegetables to the kafeneion.” A couple of years ago
“I happened to go by with some cucumbers – you know how well they go with ouzo – and I offered them to a parea [group of buddies] sitting at a table outside
sat me down and started asking me about my garden
Several ouzos later we were in his car driving up here to see whether we could make this abandoned property of his into a baxés.” Petros uses the common Turkish word meaning “vegetable garden,” rather than the Greek perivóli
and then tells me his surname is Baxevanis
First we had to empty the plot of all the rubbish
we’ll use mains water and think about the bills later.”
As soon as his efforts began to bear fruit
The garden has been written up in the local newpaper
Some of the vegetables go to the municipality’s social services for needy families
while others go to a home for handicapped children
he’s worried he may not be able to continue through the winter
People who will come by every week and leave
rather than organic – I’m not always convinced by that claim
they may be more expensive than the farmers’ market
‘Pay what you think they’re worth.’ Not
‘whatever you want.’ Do you see the difference?”
He was upset because he’d prepared for 20 kids and 40 turned up
But in the end they all got something to take home
along with a note for their parents about the garden
“Maybe a few will become friends and customers; one or two may even take the message further and encourage their older children’s schools to start a garden
the schools could produce food for families
But I’ll be happy if only one or two children develop a love of growing things and continue doing that when they’re older.”
Petros also dreams of convincing the owners of the big
lawn-covered properties in Kifisia to convert a piece of their thirsty greenery into a vegetable patch
He will offer hands-on advice to anyone who wants to make the change
“I put in a lawn myself when I built my house in Halandri
Now the only grass that’s left is the paths that divide them
I looked up baxés in my Greek-English dictionary
Besides “garden,” there is another definition: to say that someone is baxés means “his heart is in the right place.”
Petros’s garden is located at Ionias 23 in Kifisia
between Harilaou Trikoupi and Kifisias Avenue near the Erythrea stop light
He’s there every day except Sunday between 8am and 12:30pm
which is visible from the interior through a glass wall
kordas architects has drawn influence from the location itself
which is popular for its unique architectural heritage
the composition develops on four levels and embraces the natural surroundings
thus integrating harmoniously within the setting
on both the ground floor and the upper balconies
are strategically arranged to create multiple focal points and viewing angles
the design makes sure that privacy is maintained
the inner building core remains rational and structurally intact by the playfulness of the outer envelope
the design provides sufficient functional space for three individual three-bedroom apartments and a smaller studio at the top of the building
small ponds welcome the occupants at the entrance
while an exterior swimming pool area offers a relaxing spot
the pool is partially visible from one of the bedrooms on the lower level
with the water ripples and the blue hue generating a dream-like atmosphere
the shape and skin of the structure aim to reconcile the natural elements with the artificial ones
the wooden details and abundant vegetation along the building’s outline
all seek to create a sense of naturalistic artifact in the scale of a real-life building
and the ambiance of the project as a whole
intend to serve as a unifying concept of harmonious integration of the technical creation into the natural environment

AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function
but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style
a culinary landmark in Athens that looks much the same as it did 60 years ago
is like traveling back in time to one of the city’s grand patisseries of the 1950s
which is still in the hands of the Varsos family who originally opened it
is one of the most famous of Athens’ old-style coffeehouses and is the only one that has kept its traditional charm over the last several decades
Varsos was established in 1892 in central Athens
but it is the wonderfully old-fashioned Kifisia location
Kifisia was a holiday destination for rich Athenians
and their stately summer mansions still dot this beautiful yet ever-expanding northern suburb
Thanks to the pedestrianization of the area
Kifisia is also one of the few parts of Athens where you can comfortably stroll around
Despite the changes in the surrounding area
Varsos seems to be stuck in a comforting time bubble
With its decorative high ceilings and beautiful mosaic floors framed with pink marble
the interior feels nothing less than grand
industrial-size fridges trademarked with brand names that haven’t been produced for over 50 years
old-timers themselves who have been working here for ages
The purchasing system is equally old-fashioned: You tell the person behind the counter what you want
you pay at the cash register and then you are handed your goodies
The sit-down area at the back seems to be dedicated to a different era
The furniture – mustard-leather seats and round
wooden tables against a background of avocado walls – is so retro that hipsters will weep with joy
where customers can sit by a beautiful statue during the summer months
If you do want to sit down for a cup of coffee with your sweets
opt for Greek coffee – despite all of Varsos’s charms
the venue has still not mastered the art of a good cappuccino
Varsos serves all the old-style Greek desserts anyone could wish for
but it is best known for three specialties
The store has a whole fridge dedicated to pure
which is sold in plastic jars bearing Varsos’s blue and red logo
The whipped cream is rich and pleasantly fatty but not sweet and
as any good housewife from Athens’ northern suburbs can testify
Sold in a dizzying variety of shapes and sizes
these foamy beauties simply melt in your mouth
But our personal favorite – and quite possibly the preference of the entire generation of Athenians who grew up on this recipe – is the tsoureki
a type of sweet bread that is popular in Middle Eastern countries
Heavy on eggs and with an almost yellowish hue
the Varsos version is very similar to French brioche
They use the same bread to make their own version of croissants
There is one more thing that almost brings tears to the eyes of those who were raised on Varsos products: the “gemisto croissant” (“filled croissant”)
a sort of rectangular tsoureki with chocolate
Varsos also makes traditional syrupy sweets like galaktoboureko (milk pie) and kataifi
which resemble similar desserts found in the Middle East
The patisserie’s marathon operating hours – it opens at 7 a.m
and closes after midnight – are a testament to its ability to pull in a steady stream of customers
any time is the right time for a little culinary time travel
This article was originally published on November 22
the design has been resolved as an interpretation of an urban marketplace with many different shops
while deriving from the traditional image of a house at the same time — multiple white gabled-roof volumes sit on a wooden base
while the interiors are covered with OSB panels
each department in klab architecture’s supermarket has got its own identity and custom-made furniture developed by the architects
ceiling height was not sufficient for false ceiling so the team has created a simple structure of vertical acrylic lines that were illuminated in between by fluorescent lamps
this allowed for a gradient almost luminescent ceiling with OSB as background
‘we believe that designing a façade
‘our memories from this area are full of plane trees and old big houses with pitched roofs
we have created a second skin from perforated aluminum which mimics the context and matches the food market concept.’ the perforation pattern comes from an image of the trees in kifisia — the elegant leaves of different sizes are cut using a laser
as the supermarket has two different façades at two streets interrupted by the volume of a neoclassical building
the architects have developed a different strategy for the second façade
a big metallic canopy has been introduced in order to create shadow both for the pedestrians entering the store and also for the cars being parked underneath
the canopy features a slope creating a dialogue with the adjacent buildings and also with the façade of the supermarket on the other street

the only growth industry in Greece seems to be food
shops specializing in traditional products
hot dog and crepe stands open every day all over Athens
So it shouldn’t be news when yet another takeaway in the northern suburbs joins them
But it’s not every day that a famous personality
decides to bury himself in a basement kitchen and whip up classic dishes to be consumed at home
We’re used to seeing the puckish face of Elias Mamalakis on our TV screens as he takes us around the country or indeed the world interviewing local cooks and tasting their concoctions with unquenchable delight
We listen to his daily radio show on SKAI and drool over the Greek edition of Olive
Surely he could have found a less demanding way to crown his long career
The location he’s chosen for his shop is opposite a major supermarket
two designer bakeries and a pastry boutique – all of which offer not only savory pies and sandwiches but also quite a range of cooked meals to go
which meant that I had plenty of time to inspect the tiny but welcoming shop
whose entrance and floors still boast beribboned pots of azaleas
cyclamen and gardenias leftover from the gala opening on December 23
customers of all ages were trickling in to select their orders from a glassed counter with about a dozen offerings
soutzoukakia (cumin-flavored meatballs in tomato sauce)
plus side dishes of rice and mashed potatoes
Prices range from €5 for a portion of baked giant beans to €10 for the salmon
Many of the trays emptied while I was there
Mamalakis finally showed up
He’d got caught in traffic coming from the prison at Korydallos
where once a week he gives separate cooking classes to recovering addicts: 24 young men
Once a month he travels to Thiva to teach at the women’s prison there
The shop has no space for a private conversation
red-velvet chairs near the open door and began to talk
Every few sentences we’d be interrupted by friends
acquaintances and customers thrilled to find the man himself on the premises
Mamalakis is one of those people you think you know even if you’ve never met him
The “why” was the first question he answered
“I had to do something that would make us a living
There’s no money for decent TV series now; I can’t afford to retire
My wife took retirement [from the National Bank of Greece] on December 31
So I thought of doing something in the field I know best
classic Greek dishes from traditional recipes
the meals our mothers and grandmothers fed us – soothing comfort food
Greeks had a mania for trendy foreign tastes
but now the old favorites are back in demand.”
“Aren’t you worried about the competition in this food souk of a neighborhood?”
we have much more variety in what we offer and Greek cooking is our specialty
And the fact that the same faces come here day after day means we must be doing something right
We see lots of older people who may live alone or young couples who both work
There’s no way they would attempt a pastitsio or a moussaka – all these dishes are time-consuming and impractical for a small household
works in the basement kitchen – which is twice the size – with two other employees
She is the “queen of the dolmadakia” (cabbage rolls)
I also learn that when news got out that Mamalakis was going to open an eatery
all the culinary mafia offered their support – famous chefs like Varoulko’s Lefteris Lazarou and Dimitris Skarmoutsos
who has opened his own restaurant/food shop
ever since I made my first spaghetti and meat sauce as a kid
though I may put an extra pinch of cinnamon in the pastitsio
We have a standard base menu and several specials
All leftovers are given to the Kifisia municipality social services or to Father Nikolas of the Panagia Eleftherotria Church in Politeia
It’s the same as the title of Mamalakis’s TV show
and it’s a colloquial expression he translates as “so delicious,” but when I ask my husband
he has a better version: “Every bite is bliss.”
Former Manchester United, Everton and Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin (33) has joined Greek top-flight side Kifisia FC
has become somewhat of a journeyman in recent times
he joined Australian side Western Sydney on loan back in January
and he was snapped up by Turkish side Konyaspor
he terminated his contract and left the club after just nine days
citing personal reasons behind his decision
The out-of-contract Frenchman has now joined Kifisia FC
The club are 10th in the Greek Super League with one win
three draws and three losses in their opening seven games of the season
The RC Strasbourg Alsace academy product made 200 Premier League appearances

The Thessaloniki giants will be keen to consolidate their place as league leaders when they face Kifisia
with three points enough to guarantee they go into the mini-Christmas/New Year’s break on top of the competition
PAOK visits Kifisia on Friday morning (AEDT) in the Greek Super League’s 15th round and they will be extra keen to record a success
having just leaper above their title rivals into first position
The hosts will look to embrace their underdog status in this contest and attempt to secure a draw or win
both of which would be fantastic results for the club
AEK also travels away as they prepare to face an out-of-form Panserraikos side and Enosi will be desperate to avenge their 1-1 draw to them in the reverse fixture by making an example of them this time around
Olympiacos takes on Atromitos away and they will have to be wary of the Peristeriotes
who are coming off an impressive upset over Panathinaikos in their last game
The “Trifylli” is hoping to overcome that poor result when they battle Volos away on Thursday morning
The Greens have gone through a difficult period of late and will hope they can head into the mini break with a victory as they aim to mentally reset themselves
Aris hosts Lamia at “Kleanthis Vikelidis” Stadium in a bid to make it four wins from their last five outings
The Fthiotida side is hoping to snap their five-game winless streak in the league that has seen them drop out of the top six
travels to Crete to play OFI (8th) on Friday morning and the winner of the contest would ensure their place above the other on the ladder
making this an intriguing and important clash
Giannina challenges Panetolikos in a bottom-of-the-table clash and the Epirutans will be especially hopeful they can score a vital victory to overtake their opponents on the table
The Agrinio side will certainly put up a fight

Deputy Minister for Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias said a fire that began in northern Athens earlier in the day continued to burn on three fronts in the residential suburbs of Varybobi
while adding that the combination of extremely high temperatures
strong winds and low humidity levels is making the task of bringing the blaze under control that much harder
Speaking during a televised public briefing from the fire service’s Crisis Management Center in the suburb of Halandri
Hardalias described the wildfire that broke out in the early afternoon in a densely vegetated part of Varybobi as “dangerous” and an “extreme weather phenomenon.”
He also announced that hotels across the Greek capital are providing rooms for thousands of evacuees from the ongoing wildfire that has already destroyed an unspecified number of houses and knocked out part of the electricity grid
The 1135 hotline is available for directing people to the hotels offering shelter
Civil protection authorities have already cleared thousands of residents out of Varybobi
ordered the evacuation of the area known as the Olympic Village after its role in the 2004 Athens Games
Hardalias said 315 people were taken to safety by firefighters or police during the evacuation after running into difficulties

In a surprising turn of events at Stadium of Kaisariani
AEK found themselves settling for a 1-1 draw against Kifisia during the 10th round of the Super League
The result sees AEK falling behind by four points from the top of the league
where Panathinaikos currently holds 25 points
The match unfolded with AEK initially taking the lead due to an own goal by Morgan Schneiderlin in the 58th minute
with the ball deflecting off Schneiderlin’s leg and ending up in the net
capitalizing on their opponent’s numerous missed opportunities
This marked the third draw for the “yellow and blacks,” who have accumulated 21 points from their ten matches

Lamia responded with a significant opportunity of their own
Karlitos “broke” the ball to Tsiloulis
who placed it on the right post of Brignoli’s goal
the Italian goalkeeper of “trifilios” had a crucial save on Karlitos’ shot
Panathinaikos launched a quick counter-attack
who was brought down inside the box by Kosellef
but sent the ball over the crossbar in the 90’+8′
with Manouhos blowing the final whistle right after the game’s end
as Panathinaikos secured a crucial victory
Results and scorers from the 10th round of the Super League:
(64′ Karlitos – 31′ Mladenovic
280/27.10.2023 by the Single-Member Disciplinary Body of the Super League
the match between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos
as part of the 8th round of the Stoiximan Super League
was awarded in favor of Panathinaikos with a score of 0-3
Olympiacos received a one-point deduction from the current season’s standings
and while the lockdown has given us plenty of time to experiment with old and new recipes
there does come a moment when the cook needs a meal off
Whether it’s because you have neglected to shop
have run out of inspiration or simply hanker for a dish prepared by someone else
being able to order from a place that has something more exciting than pizza
hamburgers and crepes is a very welcome treat
but the owners of a landmark Kifisia taverna have taken that option one step further and opened a special shop catering to takeout and deliveries
along with a few other sides like creamy fava with caramelized onions and a plump hortopita made with a medley of greens rather than just spinach
that for once contains more filling than phyllo
some are standard for each day of the week
while there are always one or two plats du jour
as well as a mouth-watering selection of grilled meats
Many are taverna classics but somehow tastier than usual
through the interesting use of herbs and spices
extra virgin olive oil and a hefty splash of devotion
we see the name Salmatani and realize the owner must be connected to the taverna by that name across the street as well as to Antonis Salmatanis
who has the big green grocer’s shop on the opposite corner
Panos Salmatanis takes us across the street where we sit at a table in the eerily darkened
“My two brothers and I are the fourth generation working in the restaurant business
Our great-grandfather opened this place in 1920
when Kifisia was a summer resort for the upper classes
It covered this whole area plus what’s now [my uncle] Antonis’s shop
Panos started here as a waiter when he was 15
He later worked in other restaurants in Athens and on Crete
and spent a couple of years getting a master’s in hospitality and tourism at Huddersfield
my brother Marios was studying at the Ritz Escoffier cooking school in Paris and then he worked at Arzak
He has his own restaurant now on Paros and most of the recipes we use are his
with bones and lots of vegetables for extra flavor.”
We learned that a few years ago they turned this taverna into a restaurant
when it became obvious that there was going to be a second lockdown
Panos decided to open the corner shop across the street
I trained them from a young age and we are a family
Panos also tells us the Cookos philosophy: “No Knorr cubes
with bones and lots of vegetables for extra flavor
they’d arrive soggy at people’s homes and they’d blame us rather than the length of time it took to deliver them
even wild mushrooms that we gather and vacuum pack
We’ll be changing the menu three times a year.”
it used to host exhibitions and lectures by distinguished Greeks
until serious damage caused by the earthquake of 1999 forced them to leave the building
Panos remembers Michalis being a “tough teacher
He’d get me in the kitchen and make me cook the same thing all week long till I got it right
The next week would be dedicated to another dish.”
Cookos also does its best to help the community
“We were brought up to always give leftovers to people in need
They also try to be as ecologically responsible as possible
using coffee cups made of bamboo and paper bags
we have to use plastic for the foods,” he explains
“Even when we reopen the restaurant [where all the preparations take place at present]
We intend to expand the menu to include some sweets – nothing ready-made – to add to our complimentary orange cake
The hours are much easier than the restaurant
The basic thing is for you to love what you’re doing.”
Greek Super League soccer club Volos FC is facing a racism scandal after its president Achilles Beos allegedly displayed racist behaviour during a match against Kifisia FC
allegedly racially insulted Greek-Ghanaian player Andrews Tetteh
After the game at Michalis Kritikopoulos Stadium
Kifisia published a video where Beos can be heard using the term
https://www.instagram.com/reel/C3QdcRUISYk/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
According to Inside World Football
Disciplinary Commission of the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) investigated the incident and two days after the match
Tetteh was summoned to the Attica Police Headquarters for his testimony
The Head of Disciplinary Prosecutions for Football Offenses prosecutor Konstantinos Spyropoulos has brought Disciplinary Prosecution against both Beos and the club
“Achilles Beos as an official of the team PAE Volos NPS he committed a contemptuous and racist act against another because of his colour,” reads an EPO statement
the 22-year-old Tetteh expressed his gratitude for the many messages of support he has received
“I have received many messages and it has helped me a lot psychologically,” he said
“Thank you very much for the messages I haven’t answered
And now the world must learn not to be afraid to speak today
With everyone’s help we can change many things that are taken for granted and should not be happening in our society.”
Volos denied that Tetteh was the target of the insult
saying that Beos shouted – “what a monkey foul you gave” – to the referee
The club also shared their “disappointment” in the case being referred to authorities
“We express our surprise and disappointment regarding the strong interest of Minister Yiannis Vroutsis to intervene and refer the “monkey” case of the Kifissia football player to the DAEB and even
to provoke the intervention of the Sports Prosecutor,” another statement read
for the sake of which democratic sensibility and function does a minister intervene to indicate and impose on institutions and judicial officers how to perform their duties
For what reasons does he consider that he must intervene and influence the decisions of these bodies
impartiality and integrity that should characterize the exercise of his powers
unfortunately you have disappointed… we hope at least that the prosecution against us will not be the only work you will have to show when you leave this position
Such actions and behaviours to influence institutions and functionaries belong to a black
past and not to a democratic state.”

the period’s second-most prominent comedy writer following Aristophanes
Following the establishment of modern Greece and the gradual growth of Athens
Kifissia became the place where the upper class built summer holiday residencies
Kifissia developed into a commercial and cosmopolitan hub of the Greek capital’s northern suburbs
Kifissia has become associated with the city’s aristocracy but is more than this
it features both bustling and quieter areas
neoclassical architecture and people of all ages
It is probably the best place of the wider Athens area to go to for a faraway feeling while still being in the city
The Kifissia train station is one of Greece’s most impressive and historic
a slow-moving freight train that connected Athens with Kifissia and Lavrio
an event both cheered and jeered as it was severely outdated by the time of its withdrawal
Kifissia’s first train did make a lasting impact
either as a result of visits to the park or the Kifissia Flower Show
it features water fountains and benches that can make visitors feel like they have left central Athens far behind
The train played an instrumental role in the creation of the park
assumed the task of upgrading Kifissia and certain other spots along the train line’s passage
It was the railway company’s exchange for its exclusive use of the railway line
This led to the creation of the Kifissia park
Taking a walk from the centre of Kifissia to Kefalari square offers a fuller picture of this area
We began from the Everest coffee and snack outlet on Levidou St
a classic meeting point for locals as well as visitors from other parts of Athens
but if you are interested in trying other varieties
the spot also offers Intense Brazil and Exotic Hondura blends
We also grabbed some deliciously filled fresh rolls and cereal bars

Greece’s first natural history museum
was opened in 1964 by Aggelos and Niki Goulandris

The museum is now comprised of two buildings whose architectural harmony bridges the centuries
The museum hosts two important exhibitions

The shop’s front window display is filled with freshly baked butter and chocolate croissants
as well as sweets such as homemade apple pie
plus health-food selections like smoothies and salads
Flocafe espresso room is a great place to settle for a good relaxing time

for victims of a major earthquake that devastated the Ionian Islands

In a move that strengthens the Serbian presence in Greek football, midfielder Dušan Jovančić has officially joined Kifisia FC, a club based in Athens. The announcement was made on the club's social media platforms, marking a significant addition to their squad as they aim to improve their standing in the Greek championship, where they have currently secured only 12 points.
Jovančić, a native of Belgrade, will reunite with his former Red Star Belgrade teammate Marko Gobeljić and Ognjen Ožegović, formerly of Partizan, thereby establishing a strong Serbian contingent in Kifisia FC. This move signifies a reunion of former colleagues and compatriots, potentially enhancing the team chemistry and performance on the field.
Following his departure from Red Star Belgrade in 2020, Jovančić embarked on a diverse journey in his football career. He initially moved to Rize in Turkey and then transitioned to Kazakhstan, where he played for Tobol.
During his time there, he notably contributed to the elimination of Split's Hajduk. On January 1, 2023, Jovančić made another move, this time to Astana, before finally settling with Kifisia FC.
With this latest transition, Jovančić brings his experience and skill to Kifisia FC, aiming to make a substantial impact and contribute to the club's aspirations in the Greek football landscape.

The epitome of Greek comfort cuisine through honest dishes, made with love
When we talk about casserole dishes, images of Sunday meals with the whole family around a white-clothed table waiting for the giouvetsi (beef and orzo casserole), the pastitsio (baked pasta with ground beef and bechamel) or the roast lamb and potatoes come to mind.
Food cooked with love and all the ingredients, the herbs and spices simmering, and sweetly mixing. Served on the good platter and accompanied by fresh salads, appetizers and fresh bread. Steamy, fragrant, made by tireless hands. This food that awakens senses and memories – and is known with the term comfort food – isn’t something you’ll come across easily in Athens. Not because it’s no popular, but because it’s not easy to cook with love and care.
However, there are decent options, by people who love what they do, and love good food. We’re not saying that you can have your grandmother’s meatballs in tomato sauce, but we can certainly say that in the following restaurants you’ll find the next best thing.
Let’s see 10 honest, tasty and low budget cookshops in the city.
A typical tavern that bears the test of time and gets better each year. With a nice interior and a majestic fireplace for the winter and large verdant garden for the summer. The menu includes the extraordinary Hünkar beğendi, lachanontolmades (cabbage rolls), chickpeas, kokoretsi (intestines wrapped around offal), and stews that sell out fast. A household name and a welcoming atmosphere. You must try the liver that you need to order in advance.7 Kyrou street, Kifisia
For more than 40 years the restaurant “Thessalia” has been feeding generations of Athenians that visit from noon. The interior is warm and clean and prepares you for the clean flavours. The garden with the plane trees is ideal for warm sunny days. The menu is large. The “papoutsakia” (stuffed aubergines), the lachanontolmades (cabbage rolls), the fish soup and their pizza baked in a wood burning oven, as well as their bread are considered a must.
At this laid-back tavern you can have the best casserole dishes in the city centre. Small and warm with a nice atmosphere, they have been serving with equal care the diverse crowds that pass through there. The menu that changes every day includes honeyed goat, tomato beef stew, chickpeas, cabbage rice, delicious ground beef patties and amazing stews. A standard meeting point for lunch or night cravings.
A typical cookshop that smells like a home kitchen. With tables both inside and outside, this hidden away tavern has fed generations of journalists, actors or ordinary hungry residents of Ilisia. You must definitely try the legendary spinach pie, the stews, the ground beef patties with the miniature courgettes, the exceptional soups and, in general, whatever you order it’s certain you’ll like it.
Another household name, an honest shop with casserole dishes and stews that make a difference. In a lively street of Petralona, groups of younger and older people, couples and lovers of casserole dishes crowd here exactly for these dishes. Since 1930 dishes that have fed the Athenians of the centre are being prepared here with love and care. Choose from the stew and casserole dishes. It’s a guarantee.
41 Troon street & Kidantidon, Ano Petralona
A tavern in a basement with barrels and the atmosphere of an old traditional tavern. Even though the name doesn’t bring to mind a Greek grandmother, the flavours you’ll taste at “Ramona are 100% Greek, with the tomato beef stew, the lachanontolmades, the gigantes beans, all the delectable legume soups and the amazing escargot in tomato sauce being the protagonists.
A traditional cookshop that has maintained its character throughout the years. “To Eidikon” (it means special) is a special case. It serves amazing fried meatballs, liver, omelettes and fries, as well as 2-3 salads. If you’re looking for something different, “To Eidikon” is for you.
38 Psarron & Salaminos street, Piraeus
tasty “mom’s” food without flourishes
A clean shop that respects customers and has maintained a stable quality for years
and workers come here for the tomato beef stew that melts in your mouth and the stuffed courgettes
salads and a different souvlaki (pork skewer)

Art historian and set designer Liberty Polyzou and her daughter Tomasina passed away on New Year’s Day morning
having both battled the same hereditary disease
was an ambassador of Greek art with a strong artistic activity and close ties to prominent visual artists such as Moralis
All this could be a scene from an ancient tragedy or a dramatic film
it is life itself that sometimes writes the most imaginative tragic scenarios
who have been inseparable throughout their lives
their close relatives and the large circle of close and dear friends -among them many distinguished artists and intellectual people- who surrounded them with their love for years
had been present at the opening of the exhibition of the cartoonist Kostas Vlachos at the Tsichritzis Foundation for Visual Arts in Kifissia
exchanged greetings with her friends in view of the holidays and discussed
nothing that evening foreshadowed the heavy blow of fate that was to follow
who faced life with optimism and did not give up no matter how great the obstacles that appeared in her path
even though the difficulties had begun for her from her childhood
She was just 10 years old when she was diagnosed with a form of renal disease and had to undergo adrenalectomy surgery to save her life
she would be faced with every mother’s worst nightmare: Her only daughter
will not be as positive as her mother’s
The adrenal surgery to which she undergoes will not have the expected results
kidney failure will knock on her door and the grueling
process of dialysis will force its way into the daily routine of the last ten years of her life
Tomasina’s health had been deteriorating
Doctors had even recommended that she undergo a transplant
prayed that the condition could be treated more conservatively
Two or three days before New Year’s Day
Her mother contacted her doctors and informed them that they would have to postpone her scheduled dialysis for a while
The answer she received was that there was no problem
Thomasina’s beleaguered body could not hold out
On New Year’s morning she breathed her last while sleeping in her bedroom
Shortly afterwards her mother would be confronted with the unspeakable
confided it earlier to her own people that if something happened to her daughter
this gruesome prediction was confirmed in the worst way
Nothing could have foretold that the life of the girl born in London
to doctor parents and raised in an environment both financially comfortable and highly cultured
visual artists… Enchanted by the intoxicating aroma of art
she would study art history and scenography at the University of La Verne
And then she will embark on her own personal dive into the visual arts
But few are the ones who direct the script of your life… One of them for me was Angelo
love and mutual respect counts for decades,” she had confessed
But his own heartfelt last public farewell was also overflowing with deep love and sorrow: “In the countless … storms of life
sends whatever … wrecks he has to the bottom of the soul
thus gaining strength to continue his passage … to his earthly natural end … Until the venerable old age…
But in the case of our beloved Lettie and her adored daughter Tomasina
Divine Power seems to have been in a hurry to call them to the Sublime Heavenly Bodies
who have tasted their long precious friendship
they left us… Gone is a wonderful woman
not only in form but in soul… Unparalleled in the sensitivity of the sensitive LETH
Always silent in her devotion to her fellow man
the most recent being “Eleni Papadaki – Crime of Error” by Paulina Gionaki
Her deep artistic and historical knowledge combined with her refined taste and unbridled imagination created impressive sets that had a lot to say
For decades she was a dynamic presence at all major artistic events
supported and passionately promoted the work of Greek artists
passed on her knowledge and passion to the younger generation
who studied at the School of Fine Arts and was active as a painter
Her role in the Vorres Museum as a member of its Board of Directors and President of its Friends Association was also decisive for many years
Leti Polyzou was an important presence in the field of arts
which she served with deep love and dedication through many different roles
dreaming and creating even in the darkest moments of her life
loving mother who stood like a guardian angel at her daughter’s side
she spread her wings and flew with her into the infinity painted in the most beautiful colors of the palette
