Rescuers raced to search through the rubble of several collapsed buildings after a major earthquake that killed at least six people in Turkey Friday
The quake was given a preliminary magnitude rating of 7.0 by the U.S
local time and was centered in the Aegean Sea about 8.5 miles northeast of Neon Karlovasion
Six people were dead and more than 250 injured
Turkey's disaster agency said in a news release
Search and rescue efforts were ongoing in 12 buildings in Izmir
The agency said there had been at least 84 aftershocks
A government official said 70 people had been pulled from debris
Residents were warned not to enter damaged buildings
and to stay off roads so that emergency crews and rescue personnel could quickly access affected areas
Video posted on Twitter showed people climbing on the rubble
Another video showed clouds of dust rising into the air across Izmir
Local news said there were reports of large waves on Samos
and residents of Samos were urged to stay away from the coastline
