After reporting feeling unwell following her initial appearance before a prosecutor—who charged her with negligent homicide—she was transferred for medical tests by the police escorting her. The young driver is scheduled to appear before an investigating judge on Tuesday to give her statement
The driver’s two passengers, injured in the crash, were transported to Gennimatas Hospital. The 22-year-old was arrested, and tests revealed her blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit
The Traffic Police Department is conducting a preliminary investigation into the circumstances of this latest tragedy

MIES (Switzerland) - Five seasons in the Basketball Champions League
UCAM Murcia continued their successful run in this competition
winning Group H and moving straight to the sweet 16 group phase
Manisa Basket and Peristeri Domino's have to go through the Play-Ins in January
while FMP SoccerBet ended their maiden BCL adventure with one win in six games
trusting that even the players who aren't getting a lot of minutes this season could take care of business against Peristeri Domino's in a rematch from last season's Third Place Game
It proved to be the right call by the hosts, as they led from start to finish to pick up an 83-76 win
Peristeri were hanging around for most of the game
but winning on the road seems to be mission impossible when facing UCAM Murcia
which is something to keep in mind if Murcia reach the Quarter-Finals with homecourt advantage
"For us it's very important to get the first position
We started the season playing what I felt was a great game against Manisa and we lost in OT
For the second season in a row we have been able to finish first after losing the first game
last year against Derthona and this year against Manisa
I think it's important for us to have this kind of reaction
beating all the other teams away and playing good basketball," coach Alonso commented after the game
Dylan Ennis missed practice due to medical reasons last week
19-year-old Fabian Flores Moreno scored his first points in the BCL
after averaging 12 points and 10 rebounds per game for Murcia in the Youth BCL in 2023
Chris Coffey was Peristeri's best player with 21 points and 6 rebounds
Manisa Basket had a slim chance to win the group, but at least they got a consolation prize of getting back to winning ways after two straight defeats in the BCL. They defeated FMP SoccerBet 103-84 to finish the Regular Season at 4-2 and secure homecourt advantage for the Play-Ins
The first half was all about Saben Lee and Hugo Besson exchanging highlights
both of them scoring 17 points before the break
while the entire FMP team had 37 points in that same span
With arguably the best one-two punch in this competition being that hot
Manisa were quick to get a double digit lead and never looked back
storming to a comfortable win which meant FMP's BCL campaign ends in December
while Martynas Echodas had 13 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season
Matic Rebec was once again FMP's best player with 18 points in 25 minutes
UCAM Murcia
Manisa Basket
Peristeri Domino's
FMP SoccerBet
UCAM Murcia will now be in the Round of 16 Group L
alongside ERA Nymburk and two Play-In winners
coming from the A2 vs B3 and F2 vs E3 matchups
Manisa Basket will face NINERS Chemnitz in the Play-Ins
with homecourt advantage in the best-of-three series
while Peristeri Domino's have to win at least one road game against Bertram Derthona Basket in that same phase
while the Round of 16 begins on January 28

His ability to grab senior minutes with Karditsas as only a 17-year-old last season
followed by decent play with the Next Generation team in Belgrade
but optimism about his upside was still largely rooted in hypotheticals
A 6-foot-8 nearly 200-pound point guard looked great on paper
but Avdalas hadn’t brought the on-paper optimism to the court yet
Avdalas joined Peristeri in the summer and has emerged as a key player for the club in both domestic play and the FIBA Basketball Champions League
His guard skillset opens up the game for Peristeri
He starts as a wing and can play alongside more natural point guards
but also assumes ballhandling responsibilities in the halfcourt
Transition is an area where Avdalas is thriving
His 1.56 points per possession from transition opportunities put him in the 95th percentile per Synergy Sports
as well as his tight handle plus explosive finishing
make him more than a handful for opposing defenses
Add in his ability to change speeds and accelerate at a blistering pace
and even the most experienced overseas veterans can’t handle him
Avdalas’ game has grown across the board throughout the season
but the growth of his three-point shot has made him a half-court weapon as well
Avdalas is at 52 percent on 25 attempts this season
and the sample size is so small that you can’t put a lot of stock in it
but his shooting from beyond the arc is versatile
He’s hitting off the dribble threes as walk-ins and stepbacks
he’s spotting up and capitalizing on catch-and-shoot opportunities as well
While Avdalas has acclimated to a secondary ballhandler role
deferring to Peristeri’s more pure point guards
is patient with his dribble and unafraid of keeping his dribble and staying patient in crowds
and has an innate understanding of where his open teammates and mismatches are
The basketball IQ is obvious when he’s creating
but also cutting and moving into open spaces in a way that shifts the defenses or creates opportunities for himself or others
This isn’t always getting spotted by his teammates
and this is a skill that often becomes more valuable at the NBA level when youngsters leap to play with more intelligent passers
he has picked up more responsibility for Peristeri
The conversion rate here hasn’t been where you want it to be
With an increased role and increased playing time
Avdalas usually played as a wing alongside one or two guards at a time
and often taking fewer on-ball threats and more floor spacers who he can help off of
and proving himself to be a brilliant team defender
Avdalas is struggling with physicality and doesn’t seem to be using his size and length well enough
Persiteri rolled the dice with him guarding former Sacramento King and EuroLeague MVP Sasha Vezenkov and quickly moved away from it after Vezenkov scored on consecutive possessions
Avdalas has greatly improved on both sides of the ball
and his point-forward skill set alongside an elite outside shot could be enough to move him into the first round in the 2025 NBA Draft
Avdalas will need to keep this level of play up for the rest of the season for that conclusion
but if he does he’ll be a name a lot of teams are excited about in June

Inside the vasilopita, several coins were hidden, offering lucky recipients a chance to win special gifts. Despite its grand size, the entire cake was distributed in just about an hour, as reported by ERT.
The creation of this enormous vasilopita required substantial quantities of ingredients: 9.5 tons of flour, 1,900 kilograms of oil, 5,700 eggs, 600 kilograms of sugar, and 600 kilograms of powdered sugar.
The event had a festive atmosphere, with the mayor of Peristeri, Andreas Pachaturidis, joining municipal employees to hand out pieces of the cake. The project was a collaborative effort involving local bakers and students from the Public School of Bakery and Pastry in Galatsi.

with Manisa Basket and ERA Nymburk the only two teams to climb to 3-0
Hapoel Netanel Holon and Filou Oostende picked up their first wins
while UCAM Murcia improved to 2-1 with ease
and as of Tuesday they have a 3-0 record in Group H
in what is their maiden Basketball Champions League campaign
Manisa Basket have specialized in clutch finishes
With Peristeri looking like they could steal a big win on the road
Martynas Echodas detonated a massive dunk for the lead
and Hugo Besson followed suit with 30 seconds on the clock
Peristeri had one chance to win the game almost at the buzzer
but George Papas could not get a contested shot to drop and Yunus Sonsirma set the final score from the line
while another former NBA player joined the club last week
6 rebounds and 4 assists in his first BCL game
Chris Coffey had 14 for Peristeri in a losing effort
The Turkish newcomers are now one win above UCAM Murcia and two clear of FMP SoccerBet
Last season's Final Four team Peristeri are off to a 0-3 start
The fact that Murcia had lost their first home game to Manisa
made them that much more serious in their approach to the matchup with FMP SoccerBet
getting the first double-digit lead after just six minutes
and the 36-point final margin makes this their largest win ever in the BCL
Troy Caupain being the most effective with 13 points in just under 13 minutes
Simon Birgander grabbed 10 rebounds in just 13 minutes
the least playing time for any player with 10 or more rebounds in a single BCL game
These two will face off once again in two weeks' time
Coach Dario Gjergja became only the second coach with 100 games in the Basketball Champions League
and his players made sure this milestone was a memorable one
picking up a big road win over King Szczecin in Poland
"The most important thing about the 100 games [milestone] is that they are all at the same club
This means that people in my organisation believe in me
and I give them big credit and I thank them for this chance to promote our team in Europe," the Croatian coach said
He took over the helm back in December 2011
when most of his current players were just kids
Timmy Allen and Servaas Buysschaert all came off the bench and combined for 45 points
while club legend Pierre-Antoine Gillet had 13 with 5 rebounds as a starter
King Szczecin got 20 points from Kassim Nicholson
but they are down at 0-3 with more trouble on the horizon
as they have to face Oostende in Belgium next time around
Another team got off the mark on Tuesday as Hapoel Netanel Holon held off the Bosnia and Herzegovina champions
breaking away with a 25-13 third quarter and never allowing Igokea to fight back
Marcus Bingham Jr continued his fine form with 15 points
Holon were a +17 team with him on the floor
that's how dominant the 24-year-old center was on the day
Elijah Mitrou-Long reached double digits again
13 points on 3-of-5 three-pointers with a series of his usual crossovers to push Holon to 1-2
meaning they cannot afford to lose to Holon at home in Laktasi on November 6
Dragan Milosavljevic had 16 of his team-high 18 points in the first half
who are already up to 11-0 in all competitions this season
The perennial Czech champs enjoyed the ovations from their fans in this one
as they took the lead late in the first quarter and never looked back
storming to a 22-point lead at one point in the second quarter
while Christian Bishop finished with 16 points
This is only the second time in BCL history that Nymburk started the season with a 3-0 record
Tyger Campbell was once again Vechta's best player with 22 points to his name
attended by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew
the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Holy Metropolis of Peristeri and the 90th anniversary of the Municipality were celebrated
presented the Ecumenical Patriarch with the city’s Medal of Merit
The event featured tributes highlighting the history of the city and the contributions of the Metropolitans who have served the Metropolis of Peristeri
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew participated in the inauguration of the Library of the Metropolis of Peristeri and the opening ceremony of the Holy Monastery of St
Students from local schools presented the Ecumenical Patriarch with souvenirs
and the evening concluded with traditional dances from his homeland

MIES (Switzerland) - Experts analyze all BCL games each week. In order to improve the understanding of referees' decisions and to increase transparency, we publish some of those Tough Calls, along with an explanation.
Red 19 receives the ball under the basket and shoots. Lead referee calls a foul to yellow 22 and then Centre referee calls a goaltending and awards the basket.
Article 31.2.1 Goaltending occurs during a shot for a goal when a player touches the ball while it is completely above the level of the ring and:
It is on its downward flight to the basket
Article 31.2.5 When: A referee has blown the whistle while the ball was:
In the hands of a player in the act of shooting, or
In flight on a shot for a goal or on a last free throw.
No player shall touch the ball after it has touched the ring while it still has the possibility to enter the basket.
All restrictions related to goaltending and interference shall apply.
Outcome: Correct decision by the referee. The ball was in its downwards flight to the basket when it was touched by Yellow 3. All restrictions related to goaltending and interference apply, even if the referee had blown his whistle to call the foul.
White 7 receives the ball in the corner and drives to the basket. He jumps to shoot and lands, falling to the floor. The referee call a technical foul to White 7 as the White Team had already received a warning for faking being fouled before.
Article 33.16 Fake is any action by a player to simulate being fouled or to make theatrical exaggerated movements in order to create an opinion of being fouled and therefore gaining an advantage.
Outcome: Incorrect decision by the referee. White 7 landed on a player who had established a legal guarding position on the court before the shooter jumped off the floor. White 7 didn’t exaggerate the contact, just fell on the floor to protect himself. There is no fake being fouled and the game should have continued.
White 0 misses a shot. White 61 gets the rebound and passes the ball back to White 0 who shoots a second time. Nearly at the same time, White 61 sets a screen on Black 19. The referee calls an offensive foul and cancels the basket.
The White Team Head Coach requests a Head Coach Challenge as he understands that the ball had already been released for the shot when the contact occurred. After the IRS review, the referees confirm the initial decision.
Article 33.7 Illegal screening is when the player who is screening an opponent:
Article 16.1.1 A goal is made when a live ball enters the basket from above and remains within or passes through the basket entirely.
A referee blows the whistle while the ball is live.
Article 10.4 The ball does not become dead and the goal counts if made when:
The ball is in flight on a shot for a goal and a referee blows the whistle.
Outcome: Correct decision by the referee. The ball was still in White 0’s hands when White 61 created an illegal screen on Black 19. Therefore, the ball becomes dead, so the basket is not valid.
Yellow 4 pushes his defender to get some extra space to receive the ball. The referee calls an offensive foul to Yellow 4.
OBRI 36-12 Whenever a player fakes being fouled, the following procedure shall apply:
All faking to be fouled situations shall be addressed, regardless of whether fouls or violations are called or not in the same situation.
A player may be charged with both a foul and a ‘fake a foul warning’ on any play, or the player who is fouled may also be charged with a ‘fake a foul warning’.
Outcome: The foul was correctly called by the referee. However, Black 13 exaggerated the contact created by Yellow 4 with an unnatural motion and, in addition to the offensive foul against Yellow 4, the referee should charge Black 13 with a fake warning, if the Black team’s first fake warning, or a technical foul if this was Black team’s second fake warning.
Black 99 dribbles the ball guarded by White 10. Black 1 sets a screen and after calling a personal foul to White 13, the White Team also receives a fake warning against White 10.
Outcome: Incorrect decision by the referee. White 10 did not fake being fouled, his reaction was created by the contact to his head, against the screener.
Olympiacos managed to claim all three points in their match at Peristeri against Atromitos in MD19 of the Stoiximan Super League. With this victory, the red-and-white outfit remains firmly at the top of the league table, ahead of their upcoming European clash against Porto in Portugal and their Stoiximan Super League match against Panathinaikos at “G. Karaiskakis” Stadium.
The Piraeus side delivered an excellent first-half performance and secured a two-goal lead. In the 18th minute, Retsos scored with a header from a Rodinei corner, and El Kaabi made it 0-2, also with a header, converting a Costinha cross. Atromitos reduced the deficit towards the end of the first half, specifically in the 37th minute, with an own goal by Costinha, who was pushed inside the box by Karamanis.
In 90+7’, Atromitos earned a penalty, but Tzolakis denied it securing the win for Olympiacos.
Atromitos (P. Garcia): Choutesiotis, Athanasiou, Mansur, Brorsson (78′ Tsakmakis), Quini, Quedraogo, Warda, Tsingaras (62′ Tzovaras), Karamanis, Baku (78′ Kaloskamis), Carlitos (71′ Van Weert).
OLYMPIACOS (Jose Luis Mendilibar): Tzolakis, Costinha, Retsos, Pirola (77′ Ortega), Biancone (84′ Carmo), Hezze, Garcia (77′ Mouzakitis), Rodinei, Kostoulas, Velde (77′ Chiquinho), El Kaabi (89′ Yaremchuk).

Introduction: Reading comprehension is one of the most important skills learned in school and it has an important contribution to the academic success of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Though previous studies have investigated reading comprehension difficulties in ASD and highlighted factors that contribute to these difficulties
this evidence has mainly stemmed from children with ASD and intact cognitive skills
much emphasis has been placed on the relation between reading comprehension and word recognition skills
This study addresses these gaps by investigating reading comprehension in two groups of school-aged children with ASD
one with intact and one with low cognitive abilities
fluency and morphosyntax in each group’s reading comprehension performance
Methods: The study recruited 16 children with ASD and low cognitive abilities
and 22 age-matched children with ASD and intact cognitive skills
The children were assessed on four reading subdomains
Results: The children with ASD and low cognitive abilities scored significantly lower than their peers with intact cognitive abilities in all reading subdomains
verb production and compound word formation
Regression analyses showed that reading comprehension in the group with ASD and intact cognitive abilities was independently driven by their decoding and fluency skills
the children with ASD and low cognitive abilities mainly drew on their decoding
their morphosyntactic skills to perform in reading comprehension
Discussion: The results suggest that reading comprehension was more strongly affected in the children with ASD and low cognitive abilities as compared to those with intact cognitive skills
About half of the children with ASD and intact cognitive skills also exhibited mild-to-moderate reading comprehension difficulties
further implying that ASD may influence reading comprehension regardless of cognitive functioning
strengths in decoding seemed to predominantly drive cognitively-impaired children’s reading performance
while the group with ASD and intact cognitive skills mainly recruited fluency and metalinguistic lexical skills to cope with reading comprehension demands
further suggesting that metalinguistic awareness may be a viable way to enhance reading comprehension in ASD
resulting in limited understanding of the generalizability of their findings to children with ASD and low cognitive functioning skills
The current study addresses these gaps by investigating the role of word decoding
morphosyntax and intellectual functioning in the reading comprehension skills of children with ASD and intact or low cognitive abilities using standardized assessment tests for all the aforementioned domains
Research has yet to replicate these findings with low-functioning individuals
including the coherent organization of categories and events
which in turn influences the degree to which pragmatically relevant information can be retrieved and used in order to make sense of words and sentences in a text in real time
our knowledge of reading comprehension skills in children with ASD and low cognitive abilities is still limited
Extracting information from written material is a pillar of academic success (Oakhill and Cain, 2007; García-Madruga et al., 2014)
making sense of what they read is a noted area of challenge
To support these children’s academic progress
we need to gain a deeper understanding of the component skills contributing to their reading comprehension difficulties
The current study seeks to enhance our understanding of the domains that influence these children’s ability to understand what they read
further considering the influence of general cognitive functioning on the children’s reading comprehension abilities
the study explores the relations between reading comprehension
and morphosyntax in two groups of children with ASD
one with intact and one with low cognitive skills
to investigate plausible pathways for the contribution of each of these domains to reading comprehension outcomes in each group
Group A had significantly higher IQ scores than Group B across all three indices (VIQ: F (1
η2 = 0.51; FSIQ: F (1
All study procedures were approved by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Institutional review board (IRB)
Data in the current study have been collected from Panteliadou and Antoniou’s (2007) Reading test Alpha (Test-A)
which is a standardized psychometric diagnostic tool that has been developed to assess reading abilities in Greek-speaking children aged 8–15 years and identify possible reading difficulties
The test evaluates four reading subdomains
In this tool the four subdomains are treated as independent reading skills
Test– retest reliability for all tasks in the test ranges between 0.74 and 0.87
Test-A scores can be converted into percentile scores
A percentile score serves as an index of the percentage of TD children expected to obtain a score equal to or below that obtained by a child
it means that only 5% of TD children are expected to obtain a score equal to or below that score; and
that 95% of TD children are expected to obtain a higher score
According to the test’s instructions
having a score below the 10th percentile is adopted as a cut-off for severe reading difficulties
while scores between the 11th and 30th percentile are adopted as cut off points for moderate reading difficulties
More information on the stimuli and the procedure of the tests assessing each of the four reading domains is provided below
Word decoding skills are assessed through three tests: pseudoword reading; real word reading; and lexical decision on real words and pseudowords (36 items)
the child is asked to read aloud a printed list of 24 pseudowords (mean number of letters: 9.6
SD: 3.1) of graded difficulty defined in terms of length
the child is asked to read aloud a printed list of 53 real words (mean number of letters: 10.5
In both pseudoword and real word reading tests
the child receives 1 point for each item being correctly read
Testing discontinues when the child makes 5 consecutive errors
the child is asked to read silently rows of intermixed 16 pseudowords and 20 real words
and is asked to identify the real words only
The child receives 1 point (a) for the correct identification of a real word
and (b) for each pseudoword not being identified as a real word
the number of items per row increases (rows of three
Testing in lexical decision discontinues when the child fails to identify a single real word in three consecutive rows
real word reading and lexical decision on real words and pseudowords are summed to obtain a total Decoding score (maximum accuracy score: 113)
accurate and rapid orthography-to-phonology mappings
is assessed through a single text that the child is asked to read aloud
The text consists of 279 words and the examiner records the total number of words read correctly in 1 min
The child receives 1 point for each word s/he reads correctly (maximum accuracy score: 279)
Morphosyntactic skills are assessed through four tests: production of verbs marked with appropriate person
tense and aspect marking; production of morphologically complex
or else compound words; sentence formulation with visual cue; and sentence formulation without visual cue
the child is asked to read aloud or silently 7 sentences and complete them with the verb in parenthesis after marking it with the appropriate person
tense and aspect feature (see example 1 below)
The child receives 1 point for each correct answer (maximum accuracy score: 7)
(1) xtes ta peðia __ðio katapliktikes tenies (vlepo)
yesterday the children __two awesome movies (watch)
Target answer: iðan [watched3P.PL.PAST.PERF]) (P = person; PL = plural; PERF = perfective)
the child is asked to read aloud or silently 8 sentences and complete them with a compound word (noun
adjective or verb) derived from two items in a parenthesis
The child needs to also mark the noun and adjective with the appropriate number and case feature
while verbs need to be marked with the appropriate person
tense and aspect feature (see example 2 below)
The child receives 1 point for each correct answer (maximum accuracy score: 8)
(2) ta peðia prosferane luluðia se ena ___γiγada
the children offered flowers to a __giant (hard
Target answer: slirokarðos [hardhearted]
The sentence formulation test with visual cue assesses the child’s syntactic skills
since the participant is asked to read aloud or silently rows of intermingled words and then arrange them in the correct order to form a syntactically correct sentence (e.g.
The sentences were of graded complexity defined in terms of length
Each trial comes with a picture that visualizes the meaning of the target sentence
The sentence formulation test without visual cue is identical to the former test
the sentences were not accompanied by pictures and the trials were 4
Testing in each of the four morphosyntactic tests discontinues when the child makes 3 consecutive errors
and the two sentence formulation tests are summed to obtain a total Morphosyntax score (maximum accuracy score: 27)
The experimental procedure included two tests
the child is asked to read silently or aloud four sets of five sentences
and identify the two sentences that share the same meaning in each set (see example 3)
The sets were of graded difficulty in terms of sentence length and syntactic complexity
Testing discontinues when the child makes 3 consecutive errors
(3) (i) The city council met to decide about the building of the parks
(ii) The city council has decided about the building of a new park
(iii) A new park is not going to be built in our neighborhood
(iv) The building of a new park requires high funding
(v) A decision about the building of a new park has been made by the city council
The text comprehension test includes three short story texts (range of words: 97–127) belonging to the informational genre (“The hidden treasure,” “Alexander the Great,” “Maya civilization”)
The child is asked to read each text silently or aloud
Each text is accompanied by seven multiple-choice questions
tapping into various basic-level and global comprehension skills
including recall of information that has been explicitly mentioned in the text
guessing the meaning of a low-frequent word
detecting information that does not match the global meaning of the text
and attributing mental states to the story characters
The maximum accuracy score per text was 7 points
Scores in the semantic equivalence and text comprehension tests are summed to obtain a total Reading Comprehension score (maximum accuracy score: 25)
We first provide descriptive statistics for the performances of each group in the tests assessing each reading domain
We next ran one-way ANOVA analyses to assess between-group differences across tests
fluency and morphosyntax on each group’s performance in the reading comprehension test
The predictors in the models were groups’ scores in the tests assessing decoding
and the dependent measure was reading comprehension scores
Individual participants’ intercept was included in each model as correlated random effect
All statistical analyses were completed using R statistical software v.1.14
Table 2 below presents the groups’ mean performance scores in the tests comprising each reading subdomain
We also present the percentile-equivalent scores based on the available norms of Test-A
and the number (and percentage) of children performing below the 10th percentile
The two groups did not differ significantly in the total Decoding accuracy scores
The two groups did not differ in either pseudoword
children with ASD and intact cognitive skills in Group A scored significantly higher than their peers with low cognitive skills in the lexical decision test
Children with ASD and intact cognitive abilities scored significantly higher than their peers with low cognitive skills in the Fluency test
Children with ASD and intact cognitive abilities scored significantly higher than their peers with low cognitive skills in the total Morphosyntactic accuracy scores
The two groups did not differ in verb production
Group A scored higher than Group B in sentence formulation with visual cues
as well as in sentence formulation without visual cues
There was no Group effect in compound word production
Children with ASD and intact cognitive abilities scored significantly higher than their peers with low cognitive skills in the total Reading comprehension accuracy scores
Group A scored significantly higher than Group B in both semantic equivalence
Tables 3, 4 below present the results of the linear mixed effects modes for the children with ASD and intact cognitive abilities (Group A) and their peers with low cognitive skills (Group B)
reading comprehension scores were significantly predicted by their scores in lexical decision
and compound word production that was part of the Morphosyntax subdomain
For Group B comprising children with ASD and low cognitive skills
the model showed that their reading comprehension performance was independently driven by their pseudoword reading
lexical decision and verb production skills
The current study has examined the reading comprehension skills of two groups of age-matched school-aged children with ASD
and further investigated the way their reading comprehension performance is affected by their decoding
We found that the group with ASD and low cognitive skills exhibited significantly lower reading comprehension scores than their peers with intact cognitive abilities
and that the former group had moderate reading comprehension difficulties on the basis of the norms and cut-off values of the standardized reading assessment tool of the study
the reading comprehension performance of the group with ASD and intact cognitive abilities was found to be independently driven by their fluency skills
their ability to decide about the real word status of lexical items
the children with ASD and low cognitive skills were found to rely on their pseudoword reading and verb production skills
that low intellectual skills may have a negative effect on children’s reading comprehension performance
the presence of language impairment in children with ASD seems to also influence the mechanisms available to them to cope with reading comprehension difficulties
the study highlights that some children on the spectrum with intact cognitive abilities (about 32% according to the study’s findings) still face moderate-to-severe reading comprehension difficulties
further implying that ASD may influence reading comprehension ability regardless of normal intellectual functioning
about 31% of the children with ASD and intact cognitive skills also scored below cut off for reading comprehension which suggests that reading comprehension is often vulnerable for children on the spectrum regardless of their intellectual functioning levels
The finding that the children with ASD and low cognitive skills in the current study scored lower than their peers with intact cognitive skills in the semantic equivalence test suggests that metalinguistic difficulties may be specific to those children with impaired cognitive functioning and may burden children tasked with retrieving meaning from sentential context
Future research directions can investigate this further by exploring the role of metalinguistic skills of children with ASD in their reading comprehension performance
The strength of the children with ASD and low cognitive skills in decoding appeared to have the most significant impact on their reading comprehension performance
decoding effects on reading were mainly driven from the children’s pseudoword reading efficiency which did not differ from their peers with intact cognitive skills
further implying that the phonological reading strategies of the children with ASD and low cognitive skills were preserved and
boosted their reading comprehension performance
verb production significantly predicted Group B’s reading comprehension performance
while lexical decision (a proxy for metalinguistic skills) also influenced their reading performance
though to a lesser extent as compared to their peers with intact cognitive functioning skills
which have not been considered in the present study and should be investigated to gain full knowledge of the factors underlying reading difficulties in children on the spectrum
the overall findings of the study suggest that reading comprehension is challenging for children on the spectrum
especially the ones with low cognitive abilities
While children with ASD and intact cognitive skills managed to cope with reading comprehension by drawing on their lexical decision
their peers with low cognitive abilities mainly relied on their decoding competence to compensate for their reading comprehension difficulties
most of the resources employed by the children with ASD
especially the ones with intact cognitive skills (e.g.
identifying semantically equivalent sentences) engaged children in metalinguistic reasoning
which seemed to be important in moderating their reading comprehension difficulties
Further research is needed to investigate the relationship between metalinguistic ability and the reading performance of children with ASD
The findings of the study are novel in that they highlight reading comprehension difficulties and the reasons behind them in children with ASD and low cognitive abilities that are underrepresented in autism research
Further behavioral studies in reading in these children are warranted to further investigate the origins of their academic underachievement and to inform intervention designs and targets for these individuals
neuroimaging studies investigating the neural correlates of reading comprehension in ASD could shed more light in the causes of reading comprehension difficulties of children on the spectrum with intact or low cognitive skills

Vassilis Spanoulis' position should have remained firm at the helm of Peristeri
Two growing seasons at the helm of the Greek club with the peak arriving a few months ago by reaching the Final Four of the Basketball Champions League at the Stark Arena in Belgrade and a title of Coach of the Year of the event
✍ Turned plays into triumphs: Vasilis Spanoulis is the #BasketballCL Let's go! pic.twitter.com/mhyj28pPUW
- Basketball Champions League (@BasketballCL) April 27, 2024
in the morning the official farewell of "Kill Bill" arrived with several Euroleague clubs ready to grab a young coach but with great experience as a player
In our Chat Premium market expert Orazio Cauchi stated that among these teams there could be Baskonia fresh from the divorce from Dusko Ivanovic and another team
Spanoulis at the moment seems to be focused on the Pre-Olympic to be played on the bench of the Greek national team

With the final four of the Basketball Champions League coming up this weekend
Vassilis Spanoulis is in familiar territory
The Greek legend is synonymous with Final Four appearances
This may not be Euroleague but bringing Peristeri to Basketball Champions League glory would be quite a triumph early in his coaching career
It’s Kill Bill in a Final Four with the odds against him
but that’s enough of a recipe to get anyone excited
Vassilis Spanoulis will seek his first major honour as a head coach this week when he leads Peristeri into the Basketball Champions League Final Four in Belgrade
Peristeri have been fighting from underneath throughout this season in the Basketball Champions League
That meant they had to go through play-ins just to make the round of 16
there were three straight game days where Peristeri didn’t control their fate
Instead they somehow won three straight and the other results broke their way to send them to the playoffs
Peristeri responded at home before taking Game 3
Anyone who watches European basketball knows that Spanoulis is an all-timer on the continent
The legend however was truly forged in his trips to the Euroleague Final Four
His MVP performance as Panathinaikos took the crown in Berlin in 2009 was just the starter course
There were his Istanbul heroics in 2012 followed by more of the same in 2013 as Olympiacos went back to back. Jump ahead two years to 2015 and who’s the man guiding the Reds past CSKA Moscow in the semi-finals? Kill Bill. Then he did it again, in Istanbul again, to CSKA again
There were two common threads to Vassilis Spanoulis and Final Fours
He broke the hearts of CSKA Moscow and his wife was pregnant at the same time
The latter is quirky but he has six children and it was only the sixth that broke the Final Four run
when Olympiacos missed the playoffs in 2018/19
being the man that delivered the biggest drama on the biggest weekend of the season shaped his legend more than anything
he looks to do the same in the Basketball Champions League
BallinEurope is ramping up its YouTube game this season. Subscribe to our channel now for player exclusives
it’s far from surprising that Peristeri are underdogs
Unicaja Malaga are perfect all season long and stand as clear favourites to life the Basketball Champions League crown
the opponents for Peristeri in Friday’s semi-final
The talent disparity is plain for the eyes to see
only UCAM Murcia might be considered underdogs in a straight head to head match-up with the Greek side
Nobody expects anything from Peristeri in Belgrade but having a living legend
on the sideline can do wonders for confidence
Every warm body on the roster knows that they go into battle under the tutelage of a man who has laughed at such odds repeatedly and triumphed
BallinEurope has a book, a real life actual book called I Like it Loud, and you can buy it on Amazon now. It’s here as a book and here in Kindle form
Normally this is the part where I say you can ask any former teammate or any Greek basketball journalist about Spanoulis and they’ll tell you the same thing
They will but I don’t need to because Vassilis Spanoulis openly admits that his life is basketball
He wasn’t put on this earth to play basketball nor was he sent to coach it
The results in his still emerging career as a head coach show as much
Spanoulis brought Peristeri to third place in the Greek League last year
and a first ever Greek Cup final appearance in his debut season
A club with no top tier honours to its name now stands just two wins away from claiming the Basketball Champions League in just the second ever season of its head coach
Peristeri know they are underdogs in Belgrade but they’ve got a living legend making them believe in the implausible
The status of Spanoulis might make him seem like a coach that won’t be around for the long-term with Peristeri
He’s already the Greek national team head coach and will surely be in demand from some top clubs on the continent
Yet his status is such that it almost makes him ideal for such a smash and grab opportunity like this
Whether he’s out playing pick-up with his buddies or coaching in the Basketball Champions League
winning the game ahead of him matters more than life itself
That he has a roster with a mix of guys who know this may be the one best chance to win a big one doesn’t hurt
Logic dictates that Tenerife win on Friday and meet Unicaja Malaga in the final
The head rarely conquers the heart however when there’s the potential for madness
Kill Bill is going into Belgrade with absolutely nothing to lose
